BACKGROUND: As the important factors in cognitive function, dietary habits and metal exposures are interactive with each other. However, fewer studies have investigated the interaction effect of them on cognitive dysfunction in older adults. METHODS: 2,445 registered citizens aged 60-85 years from 51 community health centers in Luohu District, Shenzhen, were recruited in this study based on the Chinese older adult cohort. All subjects underwent physical examination and Mini-cognitive assessment scale. A semi quantitative food frequency questionnaire was used to obtain their food intake frequency, and 21 metal concentrations in their urine were measured. RESULTS: Elastic-net regression model, a machine learning technique, identified six variables that were significantly associated with cognitive dysfunction in older adults. These variables included education level, gender, urinary concentration of arsenic (As) and cadmium (Cd), and the frequency of monthly intake of egg and bean products. After adjusting for multiple factors, As and Cd concentrations were positively associated with increased risk of mild cognitive impairment (MCI) in the older people, with OR values of 1.19 (95% CI: 1.05-1.42) and 1.32 (95% CI: 1.01-1.74), respectively. In addition, older adults with high frequency of egg intake (≥30 times/month) and bean products intake (≥8 times/month) had a reduced risk of MCI than those with low protein egg intake (<30 times/month) and low bean products intake (<8 times/month), respectively. Furthermore, additive interaction were observed between the As exposure and egg products intake, as well as bean products. Cd exposure also showed additive interactions with egg and bean products intake. CONCLUSIONS: The consumption of eggs and bean products, as well as the levels of exposure to the heavy metals Cd and As, have been shown to have a substantial influence on cognitive impairment in the elderly population.

Background: Many studies have examined the relationship between nutrition and dental caries. However further studies are needed regarding nutritional factors that can have a strong impact on the incidence of early childhood caries (ECC). Nutrition is one factor that determines caries occurrence. Exposure to carbohydrates in the oral cavity causes carbohydrate fermentation, which produces acids. This acidic substance erodes the enamel surface of teeth, leading to ECC. This systematic review and meta-analysis of cohort studies assessed the aspects of nutrition and diet that contribute to the incidence of ECC in children. Materials and methods: We conducted a systematic review by extracting data according to Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. A search was conducted of published articles in Scopus, MEDLINE via PubMed, and Science Direct using the keywords "nutrition," "sugar," "carbohydrate," "dietary habit," "dental caries," and "oral health." The protocol was registered at PROSPERO 2023 (Registration ID: CRD42023394583). Results: The article screening yielded 6 articles that met the inclusion criteria. From the total of 443 studies found. Those that could not determine a correlation between the ECC variables and nutrition and with data analyses that only used a bivariate analysis were excluded. The results of the meta-analysis showed that nutritional factors had the strongest impact on caries including feeding practice (OR 3.64; 95% CI 2.03, 6.55), sugar intake (OR 3.24; 95% CI 2.59, 4.03), and low fruit and vegetable intake (OR 2.71; 95% CI 1.47, 5.01). Conclusion: Two nutritional factors had the strongest relationship with the risk of ECC: feeding practice and sugar intake. The lowest risk factor for causing ECC was low fruit and vegetable intake.

Background: For almost all people, eggs can be a wholesome addition to the diet. However, there is insufficient applicable data to evaluate the poultry egg intake of people in the city of Kunming located in southwest China. Objectives: To understand the situation of egg consumption among local residents in Kunming via a dietary survey. Methods: Residents living in three places of Kunming were chosen using a multi-stage random sampling method. The recall methods of 3-day food intake and 1-month food intake frequency were used to assess the quantity and frequency of poultry egg dietary intake of local people. Results: Of the 1,118 respondents, 565 (50.54%) were female and 553 (49.46%) were male with age range 0.5-91 years old. Egg consumption was widespread among the survey respondents with 88.01% reporting hen egg ingestion, but the dietary intake of other poultry eggs such as duck, quail, and goose eggs were much less frequent. The medium daily intake of hen eggs was 20.00 g/d with greater amount of hen egg consumption in older age groups. However, when calculated on a body-weight basis, the median amount of hen eggs consumed daily per kilogram of body weight for all survey respondents was 0.47 g/kg/d whereas this indicator for children was 1.33 g/kg/d, becoming the greatest among all age groups. Conclusions: Our study obtained a better understanding of poultry egg intake among residents in Kunming city and calculated the egg intake kilogram of body weight that can be a useful reference to inform the development of more accurate dietary recommendation. These results also provide basic data for nutrition monitoring and dietary exposure risk assessment of poultry egg intake.

Vitiligo is an autoimmune skin disease with acquired depigmentation. Dietary habits may modulate the pathogenesis of vitiligo. We evaluated dietary habits in adult Japanese patients with nonsegmental vitiligo, and compared their results with those of age- and sex-matched controls. We also examined the relationship between dietary habits and Vitiligo Area Scoring Index (VASI), or vitiligo on different anatomical sites. The intakes of energy, nutrients, and foods in the participants were analyzed using a brief-type self-administered diet history questionnaire. Patients with vitiligo showed higher body mass index (BMI) and lower intakes of manganese, vitamin D, pulses, and confection, compared with controls. Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that vitiligo was associated with high BMI. VASI was higher in males than in females, and negatively correlated with age or intakes of potatoes and vegetables other than green/yellow vegetables. Linear multivariate regression analysis showed that high VASI was associated with younger age. Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that moderate to severe vitiligo (VASI ≥ 4.25) was associated with male sex and longer disease duration. Multivariate logistic regression analyses showed the following association with vitiligo on respective anatomical sites: high intake of eggs and dairy products and high VASI on the head or neck, high intake of oils and fats and high VASI on the trunk, high intake of cereals and high VASI on the upper limbs, male sex and high VASI on the lower limbs, and high BMI and high VASI on the hands or feet. In conclusion, the control of obesity might have prophylactic or therapeutic effects on vitiligo.

BACKGROUND: Colorectal cancer (CRC) is a serious threat worldwide. Although early screening is suggested to be the most effective method to prevent and control CRC, the current situation of early screening for CRC is still not optimistic. In China, the incidence of CRC in the Yangtze River Delta region is increasing dramatically, but few studies have been conducted. Therefore, it is necessary to develop a simple and efficient early screening model for CRC. AIM: To develop and validate an early-screening nomogram model to identify individuals at high risk of CRC. METHODS: Data of 64448 participants obtained from Ningbo Hospital, China between 2014 and 2017 were retrospectively analyzed. The cohort comprised 64448 individuals, of which, 530 were excluded due to missing or incorrect data. Of 63918, 7607 (11.9%) individuals were considered to be high risk for CRC, and 56311 (88.1%) were not. The participants were randomly allocated to a training set (44743) or validation set (19175). The discriminatory ability, predictive accuracy, and clinical utility of the model were evaluated by constructing and analyzing receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves and calibration curves and by decision curve analysis. Finally, the model was validated internally using a bootstrap resampling technique. RESULTS: Seven variables, including demographic, lifestyle, and family history information, were examined. Multifactorial logistic regression analysis revealed that age [odds ratio (OR): 1.03, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.02-1.03, P < 0.001], body mass index (BMI) (OR: 1.07, 95%CI: 1.06-1.08, P < 0.001), waist circumference (WC) (OR: 1.03, 95%CI: 1.02-1.03 P < 0.001), lifestyle (OR: 0.45, 95%CI: 0.42-0.48, P < 0.001), and family history (OR: 4.28, 95%CI: 4.04-4.54, P < 0.001) were the most significant predictors of high-risk CRC. Healthy lifestyle was a protective factor, whereas family history was the most significant risk factor. The area under the curve was 0.734 (95%CI: 0.723-0.745) for the final validation set ROC curve and 0.735 (95%CI: 0.728-0.742) for the training set ROC curve. The calibration curve demonstrated a high correlation between the CRC high-risk population predicted by the nomogram model and the actual CRC high-risk population. CONCLUSION: The early-screening nomogram model for CRC prediction in high-risk populations developed in this study based on age, BMI, WC, lifestyle, and family history exhibited high accuracy.

BACKGROUND: Healthy eating habits are essential for improving nutritional status and strengthening immunity against infectious diseases. This study examined the relationship between diet quality and stunting in school-aged children in an infectious disease-endemic area of western Kenya. METHODS: This cross-sectional study included 260 school-aged children (age 9-17 years) enrolled in primary schools in Mbita Sub-county, western Kenya. The nutritional status was assessed using anthropometric measurements. Dietary intake was measured using food frequency questionnaires and evaluated using the Food Pyramid (FP) score, which indicates adherence to the Kenyan food-based dietary guideline. Information on the children's age, sex, maternal education, and household wealth index was collected using a household-based questionnaire. Infections with the predominant parasites, such as Schistosoma (S.) mansoni, were detected via microscopy. The trend associations of the FP score with food group intake were examined to characterize the dietary intake of this population. Logistic regression analysis was performed to investigate the relationship between stunting and FP score tertiles, adjusted for sociodemographic and economic indicators and parasitic infection status. RESULTS: Among the studied schoolchildren, 15.0% exhibited stunting, while 76.2% were infected with S. mansoni. The mean FP score was 25.6 out of 50 points. A higher FP score was characterized by a high intake of roots and tubers, dairy products, pulses, and fruits and a low intake of cereals and animal-source foods. The analysis revealed a trend: a lower risk of stunting was evident in groups with elevated FP scores (p for trend = 0.065). However, these trend associations were observable among subjects with either negative or light S. mansoni infection (p for trend = 0.016). CONCLUSIONS: A higher quality diet, as evaluated by FP scores, was associated with a low risk of stunting among school-aged children. Notably, this association seemed to weaken in the presence of a high burden of S. mansoni infection. It highlights the importance of enhancing dietary quality through the promotion of diverse nutrient-dense foods alongside effective S. mansoni infection control for improved growth. This study contributes fundamental knowledge for understanding the diet-malnutrition relationship in areas endemic for S. mansoni infection.

This study aimed to investigate the causal effect of dietary habits on COVID-19 susceptibility, hospitalisation and severity. We used data from a large-scale diet dataset and the COVID-19 Host Genetics Initiative to estimate causal relationships using Mendelian randomisation. The inverse variance weighted (IVW) method was used as the main analysis. For COVID-19 susceptibility, IVW estimates indicated that milk (OR: 0·82; 95 % CI (0·68, 0·98); P = 0·032), unsalted peanut (OR: 0·53; 95 % CI (0·35, 0·82); P = 0·004), beef (OR: 0·59; 95 % CI (0·41, 0·84); P = 0·004), pork (OR: 0·63; 95 % CI (0·42, 0·93); P = 0·022) and processed meat (OR: 0·76; 95 % CI (0·63, 0·92); P = 0·005) were causally associated with reduced COVID-19 susceptibility, while coffee (OR: 1·23; 95 % CI (1·04, 1·45); P = 0·017) and tea (OR: 1·17; 95 % CI (1·05, 1·31); P = 0·006) were causally associated with increased risk. For COVID-19 hospitalisation, beef (OR: 0·51; 95 % CI (0·26, 0·98); P = 0·042) showed negative correlations, while tea (OR: 1·54; 95 % CI (1·16, 2·04); P = 0·003), dried fruit (OR: 2·08; 95 % CI (1·37, 3·15); P = 0·001) and red wine (OR: 2·35; 95 % CI (1·29, 4·27); P = 0·005) showed positive correlations. For COVID-19 severity, coffee (OR: 2·16; 95 % CI (1·25, 3·76); P = 0·006), dried fruit (OR: 1·98; 95 % CI (1·16, 3·37); P = 0·012) and red wine (OR: 2·84; 95 % CI (1·21, 6·68); P = 0·017) showed an increased risk. These findings were confirmed to be robust through sensitivity analyses. Our findings established a causal relationship between dietary habits and COVID-19 susceptibility, hospitalisation and severity.

BACKGROUND: The aim of the study was to assess the relationship between prevalence of kidney stones (KS) and the oxidative balance score (OBS). METHODS AND MATERIALS: Participants who participated in the KS questionnaire was extracted from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) from 2007 to 2018. A series of covariates were also obtained. Weighted adjusted logistic regression was performed to investigate the association of KS with OBS. Dose-response relationship between KS and OBS was assessed by restricted cubic spline. RESULTS: In the fully adjusted model, we discovered that the risk of KS decreased by 3% with each OBS unit raised (OR = 0.97, 95% CI: 0.95-0.99, P = 0.01). In the OBS subgroups, in contrast to the lowest quartile OBS, the higher quartile OBS was correlated to the decreased risk of KS prevalence (Q3 vs Q1: OR = 0.7, 95% CI: 0.49-0.99, P = 0.04; Q4 vs Q1: OR = 0.66, 95% CI: 0.44-0.99, P = 0.04), and the results maintained relative stability across three models. We also found that the risk of population with KS was negatively linked with each unit increase in dietary OBS (OR = 0.97, 95% CI: 0.95-0.99, P = 0.005). Finally, we detected that there was a linear association between OBS and the risk of KS prevalence (P non-linear > 0.05). CONCLUSION: The study discovered that OBS that comprehensively reflects an individual's overall burden of oxidative stress was negatively related to the risk of KS, and can be utilized as an important indicator for assessing the risk of KS.

OBJECTIVE: Recently, the high prevalence of young Japanese individuals who are underweight has received attention because of the potential risk for sarcopenia. The aim of this study was to examine the prevalence and characteristics of sarcopenia in Japanese youth. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, we measured skeletal muscle mass using a multifrequency bioelectrical impedance analysis device and handgrip strength (HGS) and administered questionnaires on dietary habits and physical activity in 1264 first-year university students ages 18 to 20 y (838 men and 426 women). Sarcopenia was confirmed based on the presence of both low skeletal muscle mass and weak muscle strength. RESULTS: In all, 145 men (17%) and 69 women (16%) were diagnosed as underweight. Sarcopenia was diagnosed in 8 men (1%) and 5 women (1%). There was a significantly higher prevalence of low skeletal muscle mass index (SMI) and/or weak HGS in underweight individuals than in those in other body mass index (BMI) ranges. The multivariate analyses indicated that SMI and HGS were significantly associated with BMI in both sexes. Furthermore, after adjusting for BMI, both SMI and HGS were significantly associated with physical activity in men, and SMI was significantly associated with energy intake in women. CONCLUSIONS: First-year university students showed a high incidence of being underweight with low SMI and/or weak HGS, but the prevalence of sarcopenia was low in both sexes. There may be sex differences in factors related to muscle mass and strength, but further research is needed to clarify this.

PURPOSE: Diet-related diseases are advancing as the leading cause of death globally. As self-reporting of diet by patients can be associated with errors, stable isotopes of human tissues can be used to diagnose diseases, understand physiology, and detect change in diet. This study investigates the effect of type and amount of food on the nitrogen and carbon concentration (Nconc and Cconc) and isotopic composition (δ15N and δ13C) in human scalp hair and fingernails. METHODS: A total of 100 residents participated in the study whereas only 74 individuals provided complete diet history. Sixty-six food items majorly available to them were also collected. The Nconc, Cconc, δ15N and δ13C values of human hair, nails and food items were determined. RESULTS: The Nconc, Cconc, δ15N and δ13C values between plant-sourced and animal-sourced food items, as well as human hair and nail tissue were significantly different (p < 0.05). The δ15N value of human tissues was distinct between lacto-vegetarians and omnivores by 0.9‰. The δ15N and δ13C values of human tissues increased by 0.4-0.5‰ with every 5% increase in the consumption of animal protein. CONCLUSIONS: The study helps to demarcate lacto-vegetarians from omnivores, and estimate the percentage of animal protein in diet based on the dual isotope values of human tissues. It also acts as a reference to determine isotopic composition of hair tissue provided the isotope value of nail tissue is known and vice versa.

The lifestyle causes of metabolic disorders in patients with hypothyroidism should be investigated. We aimed to assess the lifestyle and quality of life of women diagnosed with hypothyroidism and search for the presence of differences between the lifestyle and quality of life of women with and without diagnosed lipid metabolism disorders. This study included 311 women. To assess the differences between the groups with and without metabolic disorders, a non-parametric Mann-Whitney U test was performed. Of the products that were potentially beneficial for health, statistically significant differences in the average frequency of consumption were observed for legume seeds (p = 0.014), and of the products potentially unbeneficial for health, the frequencies of consumption of fried dishes (p = 0.016) and fast-food products (p = 0.001) were significant. Only 11.9% rated their free-time physical activity as high. The quality of life was significantly different between the groups. The lifestyle was moderately appropriate. Compared with women with lipid metabolism disorders, women without them exhibited a higher frequency of correct dietary behaviors regarding the consumption of products with a potentially beneficial effect and sleeping duration. Women without lipid metabolism disorders had a better quality of life. Women with hypothyroidism should be educated about the beneficial aspects of the regular consumption of vegetables, fruits, legumes, and fish and sleeping for the optimal amount of time.

IMPORTANCE: Understanding the development of oral microbiota early in life and the factors that influence it is important for preventing the establishment of dysbiotic oral microbiota later in life. This study demonstrates that the tongue microbiota undergoes early development from 4 to 18 months of age and converges into two types of microbiota showing indications of adult characteristics, with either S. salivarius or Neisseria-dominance. Interestingly, their divergence was strongly determined by their weaning status and the dietary frequencies of sweetened beverages, snacks, and fruits, suggesting that dietary habits during this period might influence the establishment of the oral microbiota. These findings may contribute to the development of novel preventive strategies against oral microbiota-related diseases.

PURPOSE: Understanding the impact of coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) pandemic social restrictions on the lives of children and adolescents is of utmost importance to enable timely diagnosis and treatment. Therefore, the aim of this study was to explore the prevalence of anxiety, sleep bruxism, temporomandibular disorders (TMD) and change in dietary and brushing habits and their association with COVID-19 social restrictions. METHODS: Parents of fit and healthy Qatari children and adolescents were recruited and interviewed by the research team, whereby validated questioners were used to assess the prevalence of children's/adolescents' anxiety, sleep bruxism and TMD. Furthermore, changes in dietary and brushing habits were also evaluated. RESULTS: A total of 199 parents of children and adolescents (mean age = 9.3 ± 3.2 years old) were included. Overall anxiety symptoms, sleep bruxism and TMD were evident in 29.6%, 5.7% and 23.1%, respectively. An increased consumption of food, sweets and worsening of brushing habits were evident in 51.8%, 62.8% and 31.2%, respectively. CONCLUSION: Within the limitations of this study, pandemic-related social restrictions could result in elevated levels of anxiety, specifically, social phobia, amongst children and adolescents, which could inevitably lead to unwanted dental consequences.

Cancer is a major cause of death in Korea. Improving dietary habits and encouraging physical activity (PA) are important in managing the quality of life and health of patients. Cancer survivors (CS) often exhibit a higher incidence of metabolic syndrome (MetS) than non-cancer (NC) individuals. The purpose of this study was to analyze the prevalence of MetS according to dietary habits and PA in women who survived various cancers: stomach, colorectal, breast, cervical, lung, thyroid, and others. The participants (n = 12,676; NC: 11,673, CS: 1003) were analyzed cross-sectionally over a 6-year period. Caloric intake, eating-out frequency, breakfast frequency, dietary supplements, dietary therapy, nutritional education, participation in aerobic activity, strength training frequency, and sedentary lifestyle were evaluated. The prevalence of MetS was 1.22 (95% confidence interval (CI), 1.07-1.39) times higher in CS than in NC, exhibiting a 1.77-fold (95%CI, 1.14-2.74) increase in colorectal cancer, 1.72-fold (95%CI, 1.29-2.30) in cervical cancer, and 3.07-fold (95%CI, 1.14-5.31) in lung cancer. A higher-than-recommended caloric intake and frequent eating out increased MetS 1.43-fold (95%CI, 1.09-1.79) and 1.11-fold (95%CI, 1.01-1.64), respectively, in NC, and 1.31-fold (95%CI, 1.03-1.75) and 2.65-fold (95%CI, 2.29-3.07), respectively, in CS. Aerobic activity below the recommended level resulted in a 1.37-fold (95%CI, 1.13-1.71) and 1.36-fold (95%CI, 1.10-1.87) increase in NC and CS, respectively, whereas muscle strength increased 1.36-fold (95%CI, 1.08-1.70) and 1.49-fold (95%CI, 1.07-2.57), respectively, at below recommended levels. MetS was more prevalent in CS than in NC; high caloric intake, frequent eating out, low PA, and more sedentary time increased the risk of MetS.

Introduction: The gut microbiome is directly involved in colorectal carcinogenesis, but much of the epidemiological evidence for the effect of the gut microbiome on colorectal cancer (CRC) risk comes from observational studies, and it is unclear whether identified microbial alterations are the cause or consequence of CRC development. Methods: Univariate Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis and multivariate MR analysis based on Bayesian model averaging were performed to comprehensively explore the microbial risk factors associated with CRC. The Network Module Structure Shift method was used to identify microbial biomarkers associated with CRC. Mediation analysis was used to explore the dietary habits-microbiota-CRC pathway. Results: The results of the four methods showed that 9 bacteria had a robust causal relationship with the development of CRC. Among them, Streptococcus thermophilus reduced the risk of CRC; Eubacterium ventriosum and Streptococcus were beneficial bacteria of malignant tumors of colon (CC); Erysipelotrichaceae was a protective factor for malignant tumors of rectal (CR); Bacteroides ovatus was a risk factor for benign tumors. Finally, the mediation analysis revealed 10 pathways by which dietary regulation bacteria affected the risk of CRC, including alcohol consumption increased the risk of CC by reducing the abundance of Eubacterium ventriosum (mediated proportion: 43.044%), and the mediated proportion of other pathways was 7.026%-34.22%. Discussion: These findings will contribute to the understanding of the different carcinogenic mechanisms of intestinal flora in the colon and rectum and the risk of tumor transformation, thereby aiding CRC prevention, early screening, and the development of future strategies to reduce CRC risk.

Background: Malnutrition is a major threat to the world's public health. While under-nutrition and micronutrient deficiencies persist, obesity is increasing worldwide. Although malnutrition has been extensively researched among children, it has become of increasing concern among adults because of the relative increase in the prevalence of diet-related non-communicable diseases (NCDs). Objectives: This study was conducted to determine the nutritional knowledge, dietary habits and nutritional status of adults in an urban community in Lagos State. Methods: This was a descriptive cross-sectional study involving 320 adults selected using a multi-stage sampling technique. Data was obtained using interviewer-administered questionnaires and standard anthropometric measurements. Chi-square analysis was used to compare prevalence between categories. Results: Only 15.9% of respondents had good nutritional knowledge. The dietary habits and estimated nutrient intake showed a deficiency of fiber, energy and most micro-nutrients with the exception of zinc, iron and vitamin A. Dietary carbohydrate, protein as well as sodium levels were elevated. BMI findings estimated the prevalence of overweight at 24.8% and obesity at 17.3%. However, there was no statistically significant association observed between nutritional knowledge and status of respondents. Conclusion: Nutritional knowledge was poor and obesity was relatively high among participants. Improved nutrition education intervention is necessary to increase knowledge and reduce obesity among adults living in urban communities in Lagos, Nigeria.

Bats have a very long evolutionary history and are highly differentiated in their physiological functions. Results of recent studies suggest effects of some host factors (e.g., phylogeny and dietary habit) on their gut microbiota. In this study, we examined the gut microbial compositions of 18 different species of bats. Results showed that Firmicutes, Gammaproteobacteria, and Actinobacteria were dominant in all fecal samples of bats. However, the difference in the diversity of gut microbiota among bats of different phylogenies was notable (p = 0.06). Various species of Firmicutes, Actinobacteria, and Gammaproteobacteria were found to contribute to the majority of variations in gut microbiota of all bats examined, and Aeromonas species were much more abundant in bats that feed on both insects and fish than in those of insectivores. The abundance of various species of Clostridium, Euryarchaeota, and ancient bacterial phyla was found to vary among bats of different phylogenies, and various species of Vibrio varied significantly among bats with different dietary habits. No significant difference in the number of genes involved in various metabolic pathways was detected among bats of different phylogenies, but the abundance of genes involved in 5 metabolic pathways, including transcription; replication, recombination, and repair; amino acid transport and metabolism; and signal transduction mechanisms, was different among bats with different dietary habits. The abundance of genes in 3 metabolic pathways, including those involved in stilbenoid, diarylheptanoid, and gingerol biosynthesis, was found to be different between insectivorous bats and bats that feed on both insects and fish. Results of this study suggest a weak association between dietary habit and gut microbiota in most bats but a notable difference in gut microbiota among bats of different phylogenies.

The purpose of this research was to investigate the sleeping and dietary factors associated with the prevalence of chronic fatigue syndrome among Taiwanese preschoolers. Five-year-old preschoolers were randomly selected using a stratified multistage random cluster sampling method. The parents of the preschoolers completed a questionnaire containing items related to symptoms of fatigue and sleeping and dietary habits among the preschoolers. A total of 1536 valid questionnaires were returned. After obtaining the data, the researchers analyzed them using descriptive statistics and a chi-square test. The following results were obtained: (1) chronic fatigue syndrome was typically indicated by yawning during the day, feeling tired, and appearing sleepy; (2) the preschoolers with high sleep quality, adequate sleeping time, and a regular sleep schedule exhibited a lower degree of fatigue; (3) half of the preschoolers who ate three nutritionally balanced meals a day at a regular time exhibited a lower degree of fatigue. Among the three dimensions studied, fatigue was most strongly associated with the "sleepy and inactive/blunted responses/lacking in energy" dimension, followed by the "difficulty concentrating" dimension, and, finally, the "localized pain" dimension. In this study, the association between sleeping habits and symptoms of fatigue in preschool children was verified. The associations of dietary factors with symptoms of fatigue were not confirmed. It is suggested that parents establish a good sleep schedule for preschool children based on the study findings.

The current nutritional guidelines for stomach cancer survivors (SCSs) mainly focus on the influence of the surgical resection of the stomach, with limited guidance regarding a wider range of food options. We aimed to investigate the factors associated with healthier dietary changes in Korean adult SCSs. This cross-sectional study assessed dietary pattern changes after cancer treatment for 11 food categories, using a self-administered questionnaire. A 'healthier dietary change' was operationally defined as a reduced consumption of red and processed meat, grains, salt, and burnt food, and an increased consumption of poultry, fish, vegetables, fruits, legumes, and dairy products. Among a total of 624 SCSs, approximately 60% of participants reported dietary changes in a healthier direction in three or more food categories, while 9.1% reported no changes. There was no significant difference in dietary habit changes between surgery types. Multivariable adjusted analysis showed that elderly and long-term survivors were inversely associated with a healthier dietary change. SCSs with a higher level of educational achievement and income were more likely to make healthier changes in their intake of processed meat, vegetables, fruits, burnt food, or salt. SCSs with higher levels of fear of cancer recurrence, anxiety, or depression were more likely to follow healthier dietary changes regarding fish, meat, fruits, grains, or burnt food. Change in dietary pattern varied across different food items, and was associated with various characteristics of SCSs. It is crucial to repeatedly provide SCSs with information about healthier dietary patterns, considering their sociodemographic, clinical, and psychological characteristics.

Background: Iron deficiency and underweight are common nutritional problems among young Japanese women, many of whom show unhealthy dietary patterns owing to a desire for thinness. We conducted a cross-sectional analysis of the relationship between iron status, nutritional status, and dietary intake among young Japanese women with underweight to identify dietary risk factors for iron deficiency. Methods: Of the 159 young women (18-29 years of age) enrolled, 77 underweight and 37 normal-weight women were included in the study. They were further categorized into four groups based on quartiles of hemoglobin levels among all participants. Dietary nutrient intake was ascertained using a brief self-administered diet history questionnaire. Blood level of hemoglobin and nutritional biomarkers such as total protein, albumin, insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1), and essential amino acids were measured. Results: In underweight, the multiple comparison test showed that dietary intakes of fat, saturated fatty acid, and monosaturated fatty acid were significantly higher and carbohydrate intake was significantly lower in the group with the lowest hemoglobin level, whereas intakes of iron were the same across groups. Multivariate regression coefficients suggested that replacing fat with protein or carbohydrates increased hemoglobin levels under isocaloric conditions. Additionally, significant positive correlations were observed between hemoglobin levels and nutritional biomarkers. Conclusion: Dietary iron intake did not change across different hemoglobin groups among Japanese underweight women. However, our results suggested that an imbalanced dietary macronutrient induces anabolic status and hemoglobin synthesis deterioration among them. Especially, a higher fat intake may be a risk factor for lower hemoglobin.
