RESUMO

Prior research has shown that sighting eye dominance is a dynamic behavior and dependent on horizontal viewing angle. Virtual reality (VR) offers high flexibility and control for studying eye movement and human behavior, yet eye dominance has not been given significant attention within this domain. In this work, we replicate Khan and Crawford's (2001) original study in VR to confirm their findings within this specific context. Additionally, this study extends its scope to study alignment with objects presented at greater depth in the visual field. Our results align with previous results, remaining consistent when targets are presented at greater distances in the virtual scene. Using greater target distances presents opportunities to investigate alignment with objects at varying depths, providing greater flexibility for the design of methods that infer eye dominance from interaction in VR.

In this work, a potential-controlled electrochromic visual biosensor was developed for detecting zearalenone (ZEN) using a distance readout strategy. The sensor chip includes a square detection area and a folded signal output area created with laser etching technology. The detection area is modified with graphene oxide and ZEN aptamer, while Prussian blue (PB) is electrodeposited onto the signal output channel. When an appropriate voltage is applied, PB in the signal output area is reduced to colorless Prussian white (PW). The target ZEN molecules have the capability to release aptamers from graphene oxide (GO) surface in the detection area, resulting in a subsequent change in the potential of the visual signal output channel. This change determines the length of the channel that changes from blue to colorless, with the color change distance being proportional to the ZEN concentration. Using this distance readout strategy, ZEN detection within the range of 1 ng/mL to 300 ng/mL was achieved, with a detection limit of 0.29 ng/mL.

BACKGROUND: Measurement of rat anogenital distance (AGD) dates to at least 1912. Increased interest in endocrine disrupting chemicals and the use of AGD as a biomarker for fetal androgen effects have increased the number of studies with this endpoint in recent decades. A literature review revealed different landmarks, methods of measurement, and methods to adjust for body weight differences. AGD is often reported to hundredths of millimeters and as such, deserves precision in all these aspects. This paper presents recommendations for the measurement and analysis of rodent AGD. METHODS: Literature and regulatory guidance documents that mentioned or measured rodent AGD were reviewed. Four adjustment methods were evaluated using available online data from three rat studies each with two generations of offspring. RESULTS: Tabulation of studies reveals that species/stocks and time of data collection, but more importantly anatomical landmarks and methods of measurement have produced a variety of results which are difficult to compare. Not all studies have adjusted for test article effects on body weight (and thus size). The four adjustment methods were fairly comparable. CONCLUSION: Recommendations are as follows. A microscopic method should be used to measure AGD of late rodent fetuses and early postnatal pups. The caudal edge of the genital tubercle and the cranial edge of the anus are clear and identifiable landmarks. The simplest adjustment is to divide individual AGDs by the cube root of animals' body weight. These recommendations will help ensure data consistency and accuracy, and facilitate meaningful comparisons across laboratories and chemical classes.

Distance-decay (DD) equations can discern the biogeographical pattern of organisms and genes in a better way with advanced statistical methods. Here, we developed a data Compilation, Arrangement, and Statistics framework to advance quantile regression (QR) into the generation of DD equations for antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) across various spatial scales using freshwater reservoirs as an illustration. We found that QR is superior at explaining dissemination potential of ARGs to the traditionally used least squares regression (LSR). This is because our model is based on the 'law of limiting factors', which reduces influence of unmeasured factors that reduce the efficacy of the LSR method. DD equations generated from the 99th QR model for ARGs were 'Sall = 90.03e-0.01Dall' in water and 'Sall = 92.31e-0.011Dall' in sediment. The 99th QR model was less impacted by uneven sample sizes, resulting in a better quantification of ARGs dissemination. Within an individual reservoir, the 99th QR model demonstrated that there is no dispersal limitation of ARGs at this smaller spatial scale. The QR method not only allows for construction of robust DD equations that better display dissemination of organisms and genes across ecosystems, but also provides new insights into the biogeography exhibited by key parameters, as well as the interactions between organisms and environment.

The visual processing differences seen in autism often impede individuals' visual perception of the social world. In particular, many autistic people exhibit poor face recognition. Here, we sought to determine whether autistic adults also show impaired perception of dyadic social interactions-a class of stimulus thought to engage face-like visual processing. Our focus was the perception of interpersonal distance. Participants completed distance change detection tasks, in which they had to make perceptual decisions about the distance between two actors. On half of the trials, participants judged whether the actors moved closer together; on the other half, whether they moved further apart. In a nonsocial control task, participants made similar judgments about two grandfather clocks. We also assessed participants' face recognition ability using standardized measures. The autistic and nonautistic observers showed similar levels of perceptual sensitivity to changes in interpersonal distance when viewing social interactions. As expected, however, the autistic observers showed clear signs of impaired face recognition. Despite putative similarities between the visual processing of faces and dyadic social interactions, our results suggest that these two facets of social vision may dissociate.

Broad-scale assessments of plant-frugivore interactions indicate the existence of a latitudinal gradient in interaction specialization. The specificity (i.e. the similarity of the interacting partners) of plant-frugivore interactions could also change latitudinally given that differences in resource availability could favour species to become more or less specific in their interactions across latitudes. Species occurring in the tropics could be more taxonomically, phylogenetically and functionally specific in their interactions because of a wide range of resources that are constantly available in these regions that would allow these species to become more specialized in their resource usage. We used a data set on plant-avian frugivore interactions spanning a wide latitudinal range to examine these predictions, and we evaluated the relationship between latitude and taxonomic, phylogenetic and functional specificity of plant and frugivore interactions. These relationships were assessed using data on population interactions (population level), species means (species level) and community means (community level). We found that the specificity of plant-frugivore interactions is generally not different from null models. Although statistically significant relationships were often observed between latitude and the specificity of plant-frugivore interactions, the direction of these relationships was variable and they also were generally weak and had low explanatory power. These results were consistent across the three specificity measures and levels of organization, suggesting that there might be an interplay between different mechanisms driving the interactions between plants and frugivores across latitudes.

BACKGROUND: The use of Emergency Departments (EDs) for non-urgent medical conditions is a global public health concern. OBJECTIVES: A systematic review, guided by a registered protocol (PROSPERO: CRD42023398674), was conducted to interpret the association between distance as a measure of healthcare access and the utilization of EDs for non-urgent care in high- and middle-income countries. METHODS: The search was conducted on 22 August 2023 across five databases using controlled vocabulary and natural language keywords. Eligibility criteria included studies that examined non-urgent care, and featured concepts of emergency departments, non-urgent health services and distance, reported in English. Articles and abstracts where patients were transported by ambulance/paramedic services, referred/transferred from another hospital to an ED, or those that measured distance to an ED from another health facility were excluded. The Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development, and Evaluations (GRADE) framework informed the quality of evidence. RESULTS: Fifteen articles met the inclusion criteria. All studies demonstrated satisfactory quality with regard to study design, conduct, analysis and presentation of results. Eight (53.3%) of the studies (1 paediatric, 4 all ages/adult, 3 ecological) found a moderate level of evidence of an inverse association between distance and ED visit volume or utilization for non-urgent medical conditions, while the remaining studies reported very low or low evidence. CONCLUSIONS: Half of the studies reported non-urgent ED use to be associated with shortest distance traveled or transportation time. This finding bears implications for healthcare policies aiming to reduce ED use for non-urgent care.


Main findings: Using the systematic review methodology, a qualitative synthesis of the prior literature showed moderate evidence of the negative role of distance on emergency departments use across middle- and high-income countries.Added knowledge: This systematic review adds to the literature by providing evidence that clarifies prior inconsistent findings on the association between distance, a measure of healthcare access, and non-urgent emergency department utilization.Global health impact for policy and action: Based on the main finding of negative role of distance, a three-tiered policy recommendation to reduce non-urgent use of emergency departments is provided that include: 1) public health systems reforms, 2) patient education, and 3) improved access to primary care providers.

BACKGROUND: Surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) has gained increasing importance in molecular detection due to its high specificity and sensitivity. Complex biofluids (e.g., cell lysates and serums) typically contain large numbers of different bio-molecules with various concentrations, making it extremely challenging to be reliably and comprehensively characterized via conventional single SERS spectra due to uncontrollable electromagnetic hot spots and irregular molecular motions. The traditional approach of directly reading out the single SERS spectra or calculating the average of multiple spectra is less likely to take advantage of the full information of complex biofluid systems. RESULTS: Herein, we propose to construct a spectral set with unordered multiple SERS spectra as a novel representation strategy to characterize full molecular information of complex biofluids. This new SERS representation not only contains details from each single spectra but captures the temporal/spatial distribution characteristics. To address the ordering-independent property of traditional chemometric methods (e.g., the Euclidean distance and the Pearson correlation coefficient), we introduce Wasserstein distance (WD) to quantitatively and comprehensively assess the quality of spectral sets on biofluids. WD performs its superiority for the quantitative assessment of the spectral sets. Additionally, WD benefits from its independence of the ordering of spectra in a spectral set, which is undesirable for traditional chemometric methods. With experiments on cell lysates and human serums, we successfully achieve the verification for the reproducibility between parallel samples, the uniformity at different positions in the same sample, the repeatability from multiple tests at one location of the same sample, and the cardinality effect of the spectral set. SERS spectral sets also manage to distinguish different classes of human serums and achieve higher accuracy than the traditional prostate-specific antigen in prostate cancer classification. SIGNIFICANCE: The proposed SERS spectral set is a robust representation approach in accessing full information of biological samples compared to relying on a single or averaged spectra in terms of reproducibility, uniformity, repeatability, and cardinality effect. The application of WD further demonstrates the effectiveness and robustness of spectral sets in characterizing complex biofluid samples, which extends and consolidates the role of SERS.

BACKGROUND: Although RNA-seq data are traditionally used for quantifying gene expression levels, the same data could be useful in an integrated approach to compute genetic distances as well. Challenges to using mRNA sequences for computing genetic distances include the relatively high conservation of coding sequences and the presence of paralogous and, in some species, homeologous genes. RESULTS: We developed a new computational method, RNA-clique, for calculating genetic distances using assembled RNA-seq data and assessed the efficacy of the method using biological and simulated data. The method employs reciprocal BLASTn followed by graph-based filtering to ensure that only orthologous genes are compared. Each vertex in the graph constructed for filtering represents a gene in a specific sample under comparison, and an edge connects a pair of vertices if the genes they represent are best matches for each other in their respective samples. The distance computation is a function of the BLAST alignment statistics and the constructed graph and incorporates only those genes that are present in some complete connected component of this graph. As a biological testbed we used RNA-seq data of tall fescue (Lolium arundinaceum), an allohexaploid plant ( 2 n = 14 Gb ), and bluehead wrasse (Thalassoma bifasciatum), a teleost fish. RNA-clique reliably distinguished individual tall fescue plants by genotype and distinguished bluehead wrasse RNA-seq samples by individual. In tests with simulated RNA-seq data, the ground truth phylogeny was accurately recovered from the computed distances. Moreover, tests of the algorithm parameters indicated that, even with stringent filtering for orthologs, sufficient sequence data were retained for the distance computations. Although comparisons with an alternative method revealed that RNA-clique has relatively high time and memory requirements, the comparisons also showed that RNA-clique's results were at least as reliable as the alternative's for tall fescue data and were much more reliable for the bluehead wrasse data. CONCLUSION: Results of this work indicate that RNA-clique works well as a way of deriving genetic distances from RNA-seq data, thus providing a methodological integration of functional and genetic diversity studies.

Background and objectives: The intercornual distance in the sacral hiatus has yet to be studied precisely in children. This age-stratified, observational study aimed to clarify the changes in sacral hiatus dimensions and to quantify the correlations between the intercornual distance of the sacral hiatus and age, height, weight, and head circumference by using real-time ultrasonography. Methods: The patients were stratified into three groups: neonates and infants, toddlers, and schoolchildren. In the operating room, the ultrasonic probe was placed at the sacral cornua to obtain a transverse view of the sacral hiatus, and the intercornual distance was measured three times in millimetres. Results: The study included a total of 156 patients. The mean ± SD (95%CI) of intercornual distance in neonates and infants (<12 months) was 11.58 ± 1.79 (11.11-12.04) mm, 13.29 ± 1.97 (12.71-13.86) mm in toddlers (13-36 months), and 13.36 ± 2.49 (12.64-14.08) mm in schoolchildren (>36 months).The mean values of neonates and infants were different from those of toddlers and schoolchildren (p < 0.001), but it was similar between toddlers and schoolchildren (p > 0.05, 95 % CI mean difference -1.10 to 0.95).Intercornual distance was correlated with age, height, weight, and head circumference before one year of age (Spearman's R values > 0.7), but there was no correlation thereafter (Spearman's p value > 0.05). Conclusion: In the first year after birth, the intercornual distance increases rapidly with body growth; after one year of age, the sacral hiatus dimension changes significantly. Ultrasound is superior for assessing the gradually ossified cartilage components in older children.

Distance education supports lifelong learning and empowers individuals in rapidly changing societal conditions, yet it encounters high dropout rates due to a range of individual and societal obstacles. This study addresses the challenge of creating a practical prediction model by analyzing extensive real-world time-point data from a well-established online university in Seoul. Covering 144,540 instances from 2018 to 2022, the study integrates diverse datasets to compare the accuracy of models based on longitudinal, semester-wise, and gender-specific datasets. The demographic, academic, and online metrics identified significant dropout indicators, including age (particularly when binned), residential area, specific occupations, GPA, and LMS log metrics, using a stepwise backward elimination process. The study revealed that, despite societal changes, recent data from the last four semesters can be effectively used for stable prediction training. Gender-based analysis showed different factors influencing dropout risk for males and females. The Light Gradient Boosting Machine (LGBM) algorithm excelled in prediction accuracy, with the ROC-AUC metric affirming its superiority. However, logistic regression also showed its competitive performance and offered in-depth interpretation. In South Korea's distinct educational setting, merging advanced algorithms like LGBM with the interpretive strength of logistic regression is key for effective student support strategies.

Background: Public health emergencies not only threaten the physical and mental health of the public but also trigger a series of risky behaviors of the public, which in turn lead to the emergence or intensification of risk events, disrupting existing economic and social order. Purpose: Based on construal level theory, cognitive appraisal theory of emotions and mood maintenance hypothesis, the study aims to investigate the collectively effect of risk perception and psychological insecurity in the connection between psychological distance and public risky behavior. Participants and Methods: Cross-sectional data was derived from 257 China urban residents. All participants finished the psychological distance scale, risk perception scale, psychological insecurity scale, and risky behavior scale. The research hypothesis was tested using the PROCESS macro. Results: The direct impact of psychological distance on risky behavior was not significant (ß=-0.018, p>0.05). The indirect impact of psychological distance on risky behavior was significant. In other words, the impact of psychological distance on risky behavior was serially mediated via risk perception and psychological insecurity (ß=0.011, 95% CI= [0.0013, 0.025]). Conclusion: Risk perception and psychological insecurity play serial mediating roles in the relationship between psychological distance and public risky behavior. We conclude that during public health emergencies, public health managers should pay extra attention to the risk perception and psychological insecurity level of the public with closer psychological distance, take measures to reduce their risk perception, enhance their psychological security, and reduce their risky behavior, thereby ensuring the physical and mental health of the public and maintaining the stability of economic and social order.

Nanoparticle (NP) size and proximity are two physical descriptors applicable to practically all NP-supported catalysts. However, with conventional catalyst design, independent variation of these descriptors to investigate their individual effects on thermocatalysis remains challenging. Using a raspberry-colloid-templating approach, we synthesized a well-defined catalyst series comprising Pd12Au88 alloy NPs of three distinct sizes and at two different interparticle distances. We show that NP size and interparticle distance independently control activity and selectivity, respectively, in the hydrogenation of benzaldehyde to benzyl alcohol and toluene. Surface-sensitive spectroscopic analysis indicates that the surfaces of smaller NPs expose a greater fraction of reactive Pd dimers, compared to inactive Pd single atoms, thereby increasing intrinsic catalytic activity. Computational simulations reveal how a larger interparticle distance improves catalytic selectivity by diminishing the local benzyl alcohol concentration profile between NPs, thus suppressing its readsorption and consequently, undesired formation of toluene. Accordingly, benzyl alcohol yield is maximized using catalysts with smaller NPs separated by larger interparticle distances, overcoming activity-selectivity trade-offs. This work exemplifies the high suitability of the modular raspberry-colloid-templating method as a model catalyst platform to isolate individual descriptors and establish clear structure-property relationships, thereby bridging the materials gap between surface science and technical catalysts.

OBJECTIVE: People with previous incarceration and a mental disorder, a substance use disorder, or both are less likely to obtain employment than are those without these characteristics. Distance learning and education (DLE) systems are increasingly being integrated into clinical care and provide a pathway to disseminate vocational services. DLE systems can help reach people with barriers to accessing services, including people without transportation, experiencing homelessness, living in rural areas, or who are homebound. This study evaluated the effectiveness of one DLE system, the COMPASS program, in assisting formerly incarcerated veterans with a mental or substance use disorder to obtain employment. METHODS: The authors used a randomized controlled trial to compare employment outcomes of 39 U.S. veterans receiving the COMPASS intervention with those of 43 veterans receiving a paper self-study vocational manual. All participants had previous legal convictions and had a mental disorder, a substance use disorder, or both. The COMPASS system provided vocational services through asynchronous (online practice assignments, reading, and videos) and synchronous (video and telephone practice interviews and live chats) methods. No in-person vocational services were provided in the COMPASS intervention. RESULTS: At 6 months, participants assigned to receive the COMPASS intervention were more likely to have found employment, defined as 1 day of competitive employment, compared with those assigned to receive the self-study manual (64% vs. 35%, respectively)-and to have found employment faster. CONCLUSIONS: This study's findings provide evidence for the effectiveness of the COMPASS system in providing employment services and suggest that these services may benefit other vulnerable populations.

Protein-ligand binding affinity plays a pivotal role in drug development, particularly in identifying potential ligands for target disease-related proteins. Accurate affinity predictions can significantly reduce both the time and cost involved in drug development. However, highly precise affinity prediction remains a research challenge. A key to improve affinity prediction is to capture interactions between proteins and ligands effectively. Existing deep-learning-based computational approaches use 3D grids, 4D tensors, molecular graphs, or proximity-based adjacency matrices, which are either resource-intensive or do not directly represent potential interactions. In this paper, we propose atomic-level distance features and attention mechanisms to capture better specific protein-ligand interactions based on donor-acceptor relations, hydrophobicity, and π -stacking atoms. We argue that distances encompass both short-range direct and long-range indirect interaction effects while attention mechanisms capture levels of interaction effects. On the very well-known CASF-2016 dataset, our proposed method, named Distance plus Attention for Affinity Prediction (DAAP), significantly outperforms existing methods by achieving Correlation Coefficient (R) 0.909, Root Mean Squared Error (RMSE) 0.987, Mean Absolute Error (MAE) 0.745, Standard Deviation (SD) 0.988, and Concordance Index (CI) 0.876. The proposed method also shows substantial improvement, around 2% to 37%, on five other benchmark datasets. Scientific Contribution StatementThis study innovatively introduces distance-based features to predict protein-ligand binding affinity, capitalizing on unique molecular interactions. Furthermore, the incorporation of protein sequence features of specific residues enhances the model's proficiency in capturing intricate binding patterns. The predictive capabilities are further strengthened through the use of a deep learning architecture with attention mechanisms, and an ensemble approach, averaging the outputs of five models, is implemented to ensure robust and reliable predictions.

Mitochondrial genomes are playing an increasingly important role in molluscan taxonomy, germplasm, and evolution studies. The first complete mitochondrial genome of the commercial big brown mactra clam, Mactra grandis, was characterized using Illumina next-generation sequencing in this study. The 17,289 bp circular genome has a typical gene organization of 13 protein-coding genes (PCGs), 2 rRNAs, and 22 tRNAs, with an obvious (A + T)-bias of 64.54%. All PCGs exhibited a homogeneous bias in nucleotide composition with a (A + T)-bias, a positive GC skew, and a negative AT skew. Results of phylogenetic analysis showed that Mactra grandis was most closely related to Mactra cygnus. The functional gene arrangement of the two species was identical but different from other Mactra species. The congeneric relationships among Mactra species were demonstrated by genetic distance analysis. Additionally, the selective pressure analysis suggested that cox1 was highly efficient for discriminating closely related species in genus Mactra, while nad2 was the most appropriate marker for population genetic analysis.

Chromatin architecture is critical for the temporal and tissue-specific activation of genes that determine eukaryotic development. The functional interaction between enhancers and promoters is controlled by insulators and tethering elements that support specific long-distance interactions. However, the mechanisms of the formation and maintenance of long-range interactions between genome regulatory elements remain poorly understood, primarily due to the lack of convenient model systems. Drosophila became the first model organism in which architectural proteins that determine the activity of insulators were described. In Drosophila, one of the best-studied DNA-binding architectural proteins, Su(Hw), forms a complex with Mod(mdg4)-67.2 and CP190 proteins. Using a combination of CRISPR/Cas9 genome editing and attP-dependent integration technologies, we created a model system in which the promoters and enhancers of two reporter genes are separated by 28 kb. In this case, enhancers effectively stimulate reporter gene promoters in cis and trans only in the presence of artificial Su(Hw) binding sites (SBS), in both constructs. The expression of the mutant Su(Hw) protein, which cannot interact with CP190, and the mutation inactivating Mod(mdg4)-67.2, lead to the complete loss or significant weakening of enhancer-promoter interactions, respectively. The results indicate that the new model system effectively identifies the role of individual subunits of architectural protein complexes in forming and maintaining specific long-distance interactions in the D. melanogaster model.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to examine maternal and neonatal factors in cesarean deliveries due to dystocia, including cephalopelvic disproportion, latent-phase prolongation, and fetal malposition or malpresentation. Additionally, we sought to compare the differences between the dystocia subgroups. METHOD AND MATERIALS: This retrospective case-control study included women who delivered between January 2010 and June 2021 after 37 weeks of pregnancy and underwent abdominal-pelvic CT scans within 5 years before and after delivery. Neonatal factors were extracted from medical charts immediately after delivery. RESULTS: Among the 292 women studied, those with cesarean deliveries for dystocia were older (mean ± SD, 34.2 ± 4.27 vs. 32.2 ± 3.8, p-value = 0.002), had higher pre-pregnancy BMI (22.7 ± 3.67 vs. 21.4 ± 3.48, p-value = 0.012) and term-BMI (27.4 ± 3.72 vs. 25.9 ± 3.66, p-value = 0.010), shorter interspinous distance (ISD, the distance between ischial spine) (10.8 ± 0.76 vs. 11.2 ± 0.85 cm, p-value = 0.003), and longer head circumference (HC) (35 ± 1.47 vs. 34.4 ± 1.36 cm, p-value = 0.003) compared to those who had vaginal deliveries. Univariate logistic regression for dystocia revealed associations between HC/maternal height and HC/ISD ratios (OR, 2.02 [95% confidence interval, CI, 1.4 ~ 2.92], 12.13 [3.2 ~ 46.04], respectively). Multivariate logistic analysis indicated that maternal age, ISD, and HC were significant factors for dystocia (OR, 1.11 [95% CI, 1.01 ~ 1.21], 0.49 [0.26 ~ 0.91], 1.53 [1.07 ~ 2.19], respectively). The subgroup with latent-phase prolongation exhibited the lowest birthweight/term-BMI ratio (124 ± 18.8 vs. 113 ± 10.3 vs. 134 ± 19.1, p-value = 0.013). CONCLUSION: The HC/ISD ratio emerged as a crucial predictor of dystocia, suggesting that reducing term-BMI could potentially mitigate latent-phase prolongation. Further research assessing the maternal mid-pelvis during pregnancy and labor is warranted, along with efforts to reduce BMI during pregnancy.

RESUMO

Splicing is a highly regulated process critical for proper pre-mRNA maturation and the maintenance of a healthy cellular environment. Splicing events are impacted by ongoing transcription, neighboring splicing events, and cis and trans regulatory factors on the respective pre-mRNA transcript. Within this complex regulatory environment, splicing kinetics have the potential to influence splicing outcomes but have historically been challenging to study in vivo. In this review, we highlight recent technological advancements that have enabled measurements of global splicing kinetics and of the variability of splicing kinetics at single introns. We demonstrate how identifying features that are correlated with splicing kinetics has increased our ability to form potential models for how splicing kinetics may be regulated in vivo.
