BACKGROUND: With the development of information technology, information has been an important resource in clinical medicine, particularly within the emergency department. Given its role in patient rescue, the emergency department demands a high level of information literacy from nurses to effectively collect, analyze, and apply information due to the urgency and complexity of emergency nursing work. Although prior studies have investigated the information literacy of nursing staff, little has been undertaken in examining the patterns of information literacy and their predictors among emergency department nurses. AIM: To clarify the subtypes of information literacy among nurses in the emergency department and explore the factors affecting profile membership. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted among a convenience sample of 2490 nurses in the emergency department from April to June 2023. The clinical nurses completed the online self-report questionnaires including the general demographic questionnaire, information literacy scale, self-efficacy scale and social support scale. Data analyses involved the latent profile analysis, variance analysis, Chi-square tests and multivariate logistic regression. RESULTS: Four latent profiles were identified: 'Low information literacy (Class 1)', 'Moderate information knowledge (Class 2)', 'High information knowledge and support (Class 3)' and 'High information literacy (Class 4)', accounting for 20.14%, 42.11%, 23.36% and 14.39%, respectively. Each profile displayed unique characteristics representative of different information literacy patterns. Age, years of work, place of residence, hospital grade, title, professional knowledge, using databases, reading medical literature, participating in information literacy training, self-efficacy, and social support significantly predicted information literacy profile membership. CONCLUSIONS: Information literacy exhibits different classification features among emergency department nurses, and over half of the nurses surveyed were at the lower or middle level. Identifying sociodemographic and internal-external predictors of profile membership can aid in developing targeted interventions tailored to the needs of emergency department nurses. Nursing managers should actively pay attention to nurses with low information literacy and provide support to improve their information literacy level. RELEVANCE TO CLINICAL PRACTICE: Insights from the current study of the latent profile analysis are beneficial to hospital managers in understanding the different types of emergency department nurses' information literacy. These insights serve as a reference for managers to enhance nurses' information literacy levels.

PURPOSE: Nurses are susceptible to unfavorable effects of workplace accidents and injuries, therefore, perceived management commitment to safety and psychological empowerment can help nurses to participate in safety measures and adhere to safety performance. Thus, this study aimed to examine the relationship between perceived management commitment to safety, psychological empowerment, and safety performance among emergency nurses in Jordan. METHODS: A cross-sectional, descriptive correlational design was used and 306 registered nurses working in the emergency department in Jordanian governmental hospitals were recruited. A self-structured questionnaire consisting of the perceived management commitment to safety scale, psychological empowerment scale, and safety performance scale was used to collect data during the period from July 2022 to August 2022. RESULTS: The findings demonstrated that the levels of study variables revealed as follows: the perceived management commitment to safety mean was 3.1 (SD = 0.66) out of 5, which indicated an acceptable level, the mean score of psychological empowerment was 5.37 (SD = 0.94) out of 7, which reflected that the nurses perceived the work environment to be psychologically empowered, and the mean score for safety performance was 4.02 (SD = 0.56) out of 5, which indicated an acceptable level of safety performance among the participants, and the mean for subscales (safety compliance and participation) was 4.07 (SD = 0.57) and 3.93 (SD = 0.69) out of 5, respectively. Also, there was a positive correlation between safety performance and perceived management commitment to safety (r = 0.334, p < 0.001), and psychological empowerment (r = 0.592, p < 0.001). CONCLUSION: It is necessary to implement continuous interventions centered on empowering emergency nurses psychologically, which has a positive effect on safety performance. Given management's commitment to safety as a priority topic of discussion at group meetings creating a work environment that encourages nurses' safety performance should be encouraged.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have shown that a disease outbreak may cause high stress among healthcare workers. However, the vast majority of those studies applied a variable-centered approach, in which relationships between the variables are believed to be identical across the studied population. The main purpose of this study was to identify latent profiles of healthcare workers with similar combinations of levels of various work-related stressors during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic and to examine their predictors. METHODS: A cross-sectional paper-and-pencil study was conducted among a convenience sample of 297 emergency department (ED) nurses and 219 emergency medical services (EMS) staff members working in 10 hospital EDs and 52 EMS centers in Ardabil province, Iran. Data were collected using the Health and Safety Executive Management Standards Indicator Tool (HSE-MS IT). RESULTS: Using the latent profile analysis (LPA), five work-related stress profiles were identified: "high stress with a good understanding of one's job role" (11.1%), "moderate stress" (41.9%), "relatively high stress with average demands and a very low understanding of one's job role" (23.8%), "low stress" (18.0%), and "generally low stress but with very high job demands and relational conflicts" (5.2%). Age, marital status, service location, workplace, and the number of overtime hours significantly predicted profile membership. CONCLUSION: The results of the study suggest the importance of incorporating various sources of stress and using the person-centered approach when investigating the work-related stress of healthcare workers during disease outbreaks. Identifying sociodemographic and work-related predictors of profile membership may be useful for preparing interventions that will be better suited to healthcare workers' needs.

【Objective:】 To explore the correlation between hospital ethics atmosphere and work engagement of nurses in emergency department, and provide a basis for reasonably solving ethical issues and improving nurses’ work engagement. 【Methods:】 From May 2019 to May 2021, the convenient sampling method was used to select 350 nurses from emergency departments of four tertiary or above hospitals in Xi’an as the research subjects. The Ethical Climate Cognitive Scale and the Work Engagement Scale were used to evaluate the hospital ethical atmosphere and work engagement of nurse, and analyze their correlation. The univariate factor analysis and multiple factor analysis were used to explore the influencing factors. 【Results:】 The work engagement score of emergency department nurses was (51.69±11.09) points, and the ethical atmosphere score was (72.78±11.45) points. The results of univariate analysis showed that there were statistically significant differences in the work engagement scores among emergency department nurses with different educational backgrounds, hospital grades, hospital employment methods, and whether they had received ethics training (P<0.05). The results of multiple factor analysis indicated that the cognition of hospital ethical atmosphere, hospital employment methods, and whether they had received ethics education and training were all factors that affected work engagement (P<0.05). 【Conclusion:】 The hospital ethical atmosphere is positively correlated with the work engagement of emergency department nurse. The ethical atmosphere and work engagement of nurses are both at a moderate level, with significant room for improvement. Therefore, it is necessary to continue to strengthen the management support of emergency nursing work and improve the perceived level of recognition and respect among emergency department nurses in the organization.

BACKGROUND: Most of the recent research on nightmare distress and depressive symptoms has focused on adolescents and students, with less research on the nurse population. Emergency department nurses are at high risk for nightmare distress and depressive symptoms, but no studies have been conducted to explore the relationship between the two; thus, further investigation is needed. AIM: To understand the relationship between nightmare distress and depressive symptoms among emergency department nurses in China. METHODS: A convenience sampling method was used to select 280 emergency department nurses from nine provinces, including Jiangxi, Sichuan, Jiangsu, and Shanxi Provinces. The Chinese version of the Nightmare Distress Questionnaire and the Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale (CES-D) were administered. RESULTS: Emergency department nurses' nightmare distress scores were positively associated with depressive symptom scores (r = 0.732), depressed affect (r = 0.727), somatic symptoms (r = 0.737), and interpersonal difficulty (r = 0.647). Further multiple linear regression analyses showed that education level, work pressure, self-reported health, and CES-D scores were factors that influenced nightmare distress among Chinese emergency department nurses (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: Nightmare distress is closely associated with depressive symptoms in Chinese emergency department nurses, and early intervention is recommended for professionals with this type of sleep disorder to reduce the occurrence of depressive symptoms.

INTRODUCTION: Emergency department (ED) nurses and emergency medical technicians (EMTs) find themselves performing triage under time pressure and with limited information. Identifying an effective triage decision-making process can play a significant role in promoting patient safety. Experts are able to make faster and more effective decisions in emergencies than novices. OBJECTIVE: The current study aimed to identify the level of triage decision-making (TDM) and its' predictors in ED nurses and EMTs based on self-reported levels of nursing proficiency in Benner's theory from novice to expert. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Out of 821 ED nurses and EMTs who met the inclusion criteria, 320 ED nurses and 152 EMTs were included in this descriptive-analytical research. Data were collected by a demographic information form and triage decision-making inventory (TDMI) and analyzed by SPSSv.22 software using descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation test, t-test, ANOVA, and multiple linear regression. RESULTS: The total score of TDMI in the ED nurses and EMTs was higher in the expert nurses than in the proficient, competent, advanced beginner and novices. Multiple linear regression analysis showed that self-reported levels of nursing proficiency, age, work experience, marital status and triage training course were predictors of TDM in ED nurses (P < .05), and self-reported levels of nursing proficiency, service location, work experience, and triage training course were predictors of TDM in EMTs (P < .05). CONCLUSION: Understanding the predictors influencing TDM health professionals may facilitate the understanding of their training needs. The training needs of a novice and inexperienced person may be different from those of an expert person, it is recommended that the training methods be based on the experiences and professional levels of nurses so that the training provided is effective and quality. Moreover, to increase the TDM power and reduce TDM errors due to lack of experience, a system is suggested to be established to allow novice nurses in the first year to work with experienced nurses. Also it is suggested that the determining educational and training focus with regards to triage before entering the bedside be done based on predictors.

Objectives: We aim to find out the prevalence, characteristics, and predictors of workplace violence (WPV) against current Chinese emergency department (ED) nurses. Methods: A cross-sectional survey of 20,136 ED nurses was conducted in 31 provinces in China between July and September 2019. Descriptive analyses were used to examine the prevalence and characteristics of WPV. Chi-square analysis and Binary logistic regression analysis were used to identify the predictors of WPV. Results: During the past 12 months, there are 79.39% of ED nurses exposed to any type of WPV, including 78.38% and 39.65% exposed to nonphysical and physical violence, respectively. Binary logistic regression analysis shows that ED nurses who were male, had bachelor's degrees, had average monthly salary between 5,001 and 12,000, worked in central China, had higher professional titles, were more experienced, arranging shift work, and had higher work stress were more likely to experience WPV. Conclusion: A relatively high prevalence of WPV against Chinese ED nurses has been revealed in this study. The characteristics and predictors of WPV remind us to take positive measures to reduce WPV.

BACKGROUND: The rapid spread of the disease has severely impacted healthcare systems around the world. There is a lack of evidence related to the care experience of emergency department nurses. OBJECTIVE: To understand the care experience and thoughts of emergency department nurses during the COVID-19 epidemic. METHODS: Purposive sampling was used to recruit 16 emergency department nurses from a medical center, and a semi-structured interview was used for data collection. The enrollment period was from 28 July 2021 to 30 October 2021. Thematic content analysis was used for data analysis. RESULTS: The care experiences of emergency department nurses during the COVID-19 epidemic can be classified into three themes and six sub-themes. Theme 1: I am the gatekeeper; theme 2: Care and environment challenges: difficulties with equipment and environment, managing patient's and family members' emotions, insufficient manpower of care; theme 3: Conflicting emotions: worrying about being infected or transmitting the disease, needs of effective support and empathy, and lack of understanding and discrimination towards the occupation. CONCLUSION: Emergency department nurses adhered to professional awareness and responsibility during the epidemic and play a critical role in epidemic prevention.

This cross-sectional, correlational study's purpose was to evaluate the effects of resilience and moral distress on workplace engagement in emergency department nurses providing direct patient care. Data were collected from 175 emergency department nurses using a Web-based survey. The higher the nurses' resilience and the lower their moral distress, the greater their workplace engagement. Resilience and moral distress were not correlated; furthermore, moral distress did not mediate a relationship between resilience and workplace engagement. Resilience was higher with greater job satisfaction, increased age, and longer tenure as a nurse. Workplace engagement increased with higher job satisfaction and less time seeking other employment. Moral distress scores were higher in nurses reporting lower job satisfaction. Multiple regression analysis revealed that resilience, job satisfaction, and moral distress were independent predictors of workplace engagement. Interventions that improve resilience and job satisfaction and/or lower moral distress may improve workplace engagement of emergency department nurses.

OBJECTIVES: This study was carried out as a methodological study to adapt the stressor scale for emergency nurses to Turkish and to test its validity and reliability. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Data were collected between April 2019 and December 2019 from 250 emergency nurses working in the emergency department of two different universities and two state hospitals. The scale was reapplied to 40 emergency nurses from the sample group 3 weeks after the first application. For the validity studies of the scale, language validity, content validity, and construct validity studies were used, and for the reliability studies, internal consistency and test-retest reliability methods were used. RESULTS: It was found that the content validity index of the final form was determined as 0.92 (0.78-1.00) according to expert opinions, the scale explained 69.19% of the total variance in four subdimensions, the Cronbach's alpha value was 0.90, and the test-retest intraclass correlation coefficient value was 0.97. CONCLUSION: It was concluded that the reliability and validity of the scale was high for Turkish society.

BACKGROUND: Nurses' perceptions of empowerment have been linked to a number of variables in the hospital workplace, including job satisfaction, autonomy, and work effectiveness. Yet there have been no previous studies of perceptions of empowerment specifically among emergency department (ED) nurses. METHODS: Registered nurses (RNs) employed in the EDs of 6 hospitals in a major health care system in the eastern United States were surveyed regarding their perceptions of empowerment. Of the 240 RNs eligible to participate, there were 167 usable surveys. RESULTS: There was a moderate level of empowerment among the RNs who participated, consistent with the level of empowerment reported in several other studies of staff nurses and nurses in other positions. DISCUSSION: The moderate level of empowerment in this sample may be attributed to the many opportunities for RN involvement in the hospitals within this health care system. Nurse leaders can initiate programs focused on enhancing RN perceptions of empowerment. In addition, there is a need for further research among RNs with different specialty preparation.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to identify relationships between violence response, coping, and burnout among emergency department nurses. METHOD: This descriptive study using self report questionnaires was conducted from October 1 to October 20, 2008. Participants were 147 general nurses working in emergency departments in hospitals having over 500 beds and located in Busan. ANOVA and Pearson's correlation coefficients with SPSS PC+ WIN 14.0. were used to analyze the data. RESULTS: Scores for violence response, coping, and burnout were 3.08 (1-5 scale), 2.57 (1-4 scale), and 3.22 (1-5 scale) respectively. There were significant differences in violence response and burnout by education, clinical careers, clinical careers in ED, and plans to work in the future, and no significant differences in coping by general characteristics. There was a significant and highly positive relationship between violence response and burnout. CONCLUSION: The degree of violence response and burnout was comparatively high, while that of coping was average. Therefore, it is necessary to develop effective programs related to prevention and coping with violence for nurses in emergency departments. Institutional measures by hospital authorities are also needed to improve the nursing quality by providing a safe workplace.
