Oxidative stress (OS) and disrupted antioxidant defense mechanisms play a pivotal role in the etiology of male infertility. The alterations in reactive oxygen species (ROS) production and calcium (Ca2+) homeostasis are the main activators for the mitochondrial permeability transition pore (mPTP) opening. The mPTP opening is one of the main mechanisms involved in mitochondrial dysfunction in spermatozoa. This alteration in mitochondrial function adversely affects energy supply, sperm motility, and fertilizing capacity and contributes to the development of male infertility. In human spermatozoa, the mPTP opening has been associated with ionomycin-induced endogenous oxidative stress and peroxynitrite-induced nitrosative stress; however, the effect of exogenous oxidative stress on mPTP opening in sperm has not been evaluated. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of exogenous oxidative stress induced by hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) on mPTP opening, mitochondrial function, motility, and cell death markers in human spermatozoa. Human spermatozoa were incubated with 3 mmol/L of H2O2 for 60 min, and intracellular Ca2+ concentration, mPTP opening, mitochondrial membrane potential (ΔΨm), ATP levels, mitochondrial reactive oxygen species (mROS) production, phosphatidylserine (PS) externalization, DNA fragmentation, viability, and sperm motility were evaluated. H2O2-induced exogenous oxidative stress caused increased intracellular Ca2+, leading to subsequent mPTP opening and alteration of mitochondrial function, characterized by ΔΨm dissipation, decreased ATP levels, increased mROS production, and the subsequent alteration of sperm motility. Furthermore, H2O2-induced opening of mPTP was associated with the expression of apoptotic cell death markers including PS externalization and DNA fragmentation. These results highlight the role of exogenous oxidative stress in causing mitochondrial dysfunction, deterioration of sperm motility, and an increase in apoptotic cell death markers, including PS externalization and DNA fragmentation, through the mPTP opening. This study yielded new knowledge regarding the effects of this type of stress on mitochondrial function and specifically on mPTP opening, factors that can contribute to the development of male infertility, considering that the role of mPTP in mitochondrial dysfunction in human sperm is not completely elucidated. Therefore, these findings are relevant to understanding male infertility and may provide an in vitro model for further research aimed at improving human sperm quality.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of increasing levels of the M-E complex (xylanase, glucanase, cellulase, and invertase) Optimax E® on the performance of growing lambs, their digestibility, and their rumen microbiota, and to estimate NEm, NEg, and ruminal methane levels. Forty lambs (Katahdin x Dorset; 22.91 ± 4.16 kg) were randomly assigned to dietary concentrations of ME (0, 0.2, 0.4, and 0.8% DM) and fed individually for 77 days. Increasing M-E improved feed conversion (p < 0.05) as well as NEm and NEg (p < 0.05), which were associated with increased in vivo DM and NDF digestion (linear and quadratic p < 0.01). Few microbial families showed abundancy changes (Erysipelotrichaceae, Christensenellaceae, Lentisphaerae, and Clostridial Family XIII); however, the dominant phylum Bacteroidetes was linearly reduced, while Firmicutes increased (p < 0.01), resulting in a greater Firmicutes-to-Bacteroidetes ratio. Total Entodinium showed a quadratic response (p < 0.10), increasing its abundancy as the enzyme dose was augmented. The daily emission intensity of methane (per kg of DMI or AGD) was reduced linearly (p < 0.01). In conclusion, adding the M-E complex Optimax E® to growing lambs' diets improves their productive performance by acting synergistically with the rumen microbiota, modifying the Firmicutes-to-Bacteroidetes ratio toward more efficient fermentation, and shows the potential to reduce the intensity of greenhouse gas emissions from lambs.

Most grains and vegetable feedstuffs used in commercial poultry feed contain phytates and polysaccharides-non-starchy chemical structures that are not degraded by digestive tract enzymes. Exogenous enzymes optimize the use of dietary ingredients. This study aimed to determine whether combining ß-mannanases (400 g/ton) and phytases in broiler sorghum-soybean diets could improve performance and immunity in broilers. Four diets were randomized in a 2 × 2 factorial design, with two phytase levels (500 or 1500 FTU/kg) and ß-mannanase supplementation (0-400 g/ton; 158 million units/kg minimum enzyme activity). Six replicate battery cages of 10 chicks were fed each diet ad libitum. To assess cellular and humoral immune responses, 10 birds per treatment were euthanized on day 21. Supplementation with ß-mannanase enzymes led to increased body weight and a higher feed conversion index (FCI) (p < 0.05). The phytase factor improved the FCI at 1500 FTU/kg (p < 0.05). Supplementation with ß-mannanases improved the immune response by increasing the IgA concentration in the duodenum (95%) and total serum immunoglobulins (p < 0.05). The morphometric index increased in all organs (p < 0.05), and the heterophile/lymphocyte ratio (HLR) decreased by 50% (p < 0.05). Supplementing broilers with ß-mannanases in sorghum-soybean meal diets with phytases improved their performance and immunity.

Low crude protein (CP) diets can reduce nitrogen (N) excretion and costs by increasing N utilization efficiency. Exogenous proteases may further improve protein digestibility in low CP diets. This study first evaluated in vitro the efficacy of a multiprotease on amino acid (AA) release from feedstuffs and broiler feed. Later, a broiler study evaluated the effect of feeding corn-soybean meal diets containing 3 CP levels (17, 19, and 21% CP) with supplementation on top of 0 or 2,400 U/kg multiprotease on chicken growth performance, total tract CP, and ileal AA digestibilities, and energy utilization. Ross 708 male chickens were placed in 42 cages and assigned to 6 treatments resulting from a 3 × 2 factorial arrangement. Three isocaloric basal diets were formulated to reduce CP, but all diets maintained digestible Lys:CP in 5.47% and the same ideal protein profile. Data were analyzed in a completely randomized design. On average, the multiprotease increased (P < 0.05) in vitro free AA release by 27.81% in most feedstuffs evaluated compared to the control. For broiler feed, 1,200 U/g multiprotease addition improved (P < 0.001) in vitro free AA release by 18.90%. This multiprotease showed interaction effects (P < 0.05) on chicken FCR, energy, and CP digestibility. As expected, BW at 24 d, BW gain, and FCR (8-24 d) worsened (P < 0.001) as dietary CP reduced from 21 to 17%, and multiprotease addition did not improve (P > 0.05) these parameters. BW gain decreased by 12.9% when N intake was reduced from 49.32 to 38.49 g/bird. Multiprotease supplementation improved (P < 0.01) AMEn by 71 kcal/kg, CP digestibility from 59.45 to 63.51%, ileal AA digestibility, and DM digestibility from 67.08 to 73.49%, but only in the 21% CP diet. No differences in ileal AA digestibility due to CP level (P > 0.05) were detected, except for Cys digestibility (P < 0.01). In conclusion, low CP diets reduced growth performance and improved N utilization but negatively affected energy utilization efficiency. Exogenous multiprotease supplementation improved AME, AMEn, protein, ileal AA, and DM digestibility in the 21% CP diet without significantly affecting growth performance.

Xylanases are of significant interest for biomass conversion technologies. Here, we investigated the allosteric regulation of xylan hydrolysis by the Bacillus subtilis GH11 endoxylanase. Molecular dynamics simulations (MDS) in the presence of xylobiose identified binding to the active site and two potential secondary binding sites (SBS) around surface residues Asn54 and Asn151. Arabinoxylan titration experiments with single cysteine mutants N54C and N151C labeled with the thiol-reactive fluorophore acrylodan or the ESR spin-label MTSSL validated the MDS results. Ligand binding at the SBS around Asn54 confirms previous reports, and analysis of the second SBS around N151C discovered in the present study includes residues Val98/Ala192/Ser155/His156. Understanding the regulation of xylanases contributes to efforts for industrial decarbonization and to establishing a sustainable energy matrix.

The need to improve access to health services for the transgender community has become evident, especially concerning cardiovascular risk, which is higher compared to the general population. Surgical procedures and hormone therapies are common in this population to affirm gender identity, but they pose challenges as they are associated with disruptions in lipid metabolism, body fat concentration, and insulin resistance. Additionally, there is an increased risk of adverse cardiovascular events such as venous thromboembolism, stroke, and myocardial infarction. The influence of sex hormones on the electrophysiological properties of the heart has been studied, highlighting gender differences that may predispose the transgender population to cardiac arrhythmias. Exogenous hormone therapy, for both transgender women and men, can affect the QT interval and increase the risk of arrhythmias, including atrial fibrillation. Although the incidence of arrhythmias in the transgender population is not entirely clear, evidence suggests the need for careful cardiovascular monitoring and consideration of risk factors before initiating hormone therapies.
La necesidad de mejorar el acceso a servicios de salud para la comunidad transgénero se ha vuelto evidente, especialmente en relación con el riesgo cardiovascular, que es más alto en comparación con la población general. Los procedimientos quirúrgicos y las terapias hormonales son comunes en esta población para reafirmar la identidad de género, pero plantean desafíos, ya que se asocian con alteraciones en el metabolismo de lípidos, la concentración de grasa corporal y la resistencia a la insulina. Además, existe un aumento en el riesgo de eventos cardiovasculares adversos, como tromboembolia venosa, accidente cerebrovascular e infarto de miocardio. La influencia de las hormonas sexuales en las propiedades electrofisiológicas del corazón ha sido estudiada, destacando diferencias entre géneros que pueden predisponer a la población transgénero a arritmias cardiacas. La terapia hormonal exógena, tanto para mujeres como para hombres trans, puede afectar el intervalo QT y aumentar el riesgo de arritmias, incluida la fibrilación auricular. Aunque la incidencia de arritmias en la población transgénero aún no está completamente clara, la evidencia sugiere la necesidad de un monitoreo cardiovascular cuidadoso y la consideración de factores de riesgo antes de iniciar terapias hormonales.

Under conditions of abiotic stress several physiological and biochemical processes in plants can be modified. The production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) is toxic at high concentrations and promotes RNA, DNA and plant cell membrane degradation. Plants have enzymatic and non-enzymatic adaptation mechanisms to act against ROS detoxification. Ascorbic acid (AsA) is the non-enzymatic compound essential for several biological functions, which acts in the elimination and balance of ROS production and with the potential to promote several physiological functions in plants, such as the photosynthetic process. For plant development, AsA plays an important role in cell division, osmotic adjustment, hormone biosynthesis, and as an enzymatic cofactor. In this review, the redox reactions, biosynthetic pathways, and the physiological and biochemical functions of AsA against abiotic stress in plants are discussed. The concentration of AsA in plants can vary between species and depend on the biosynthetic pathways d-mannose/l-galactose, d-galacturonate, euglenids, and d-glucuronate. Although the endogenous levels of AsA in plants are used in large amounts in cell metabolism, the exogenous application of AsA further increases these endogenous levels to promote the antioxidant system and ameliorate the effects produced by abiotic stress. Foliar application of AsA promotes antioxidant metabolism in plants subjected to climate change conditions, also allowing the production of foods with higher nutritional quality and food safety, given the fact that AsA is biologically essential in the human diet.

Epilepsy is a neurological disorder characterized by epileptic seizures resulting from neuronal hyperexcitability, which may be related to failures in Na,K-ATPase activity and oxidative stress participation. We conducted this study to investigate the impact of antioxidant therapy on oxidative stress, Na,K-ATPase activity, seizure factors, and mortality in rodent seizure/epilepsy models induced by pentylenetetrazol (PTZ), pilocarpine (PILO), and kainic acid (KA). After screening 561 records in the MEDLINE, EMBASE, Web of Science, Science Direct, and Scopus databases, 22 were included in the systematic review following the PRISMA guidelines. The meta-analysis included 14 studies and showed that in epileptic animals there was an increase in the oxidizing agents nitric oxide (NO) and malondialdehyde (MDA), with a reduction in endogenous antioxidants reduced glutathione (GSH) and superoxide dismutase (SO). The Na,K-ATPase activity was reduced in all areas evaluated. Antioxidant therapy reversed all of these parameters altered by seizure or epilepsy induction. In addition, there was a percentage decrease in the number of seizures and mortality, and a meta-analysis showed a longer seizure latency in animals using antioxidant therapy. Thus, this study suggests that the use of antioxidants promotes neuroprotective effects and mitigates the effects of epilepsy. Abstract Background: Although phytase has been widely used in poultry nutrition, the effects of the enzyme on broilers fed low levels of phosphorus are poorly understood. Objective: To evaluate the effects of two commercial phytases on live performance and bone quality of broilers fed diets with normal and reduced levels of phosphorus. Methods: Two experiments were conducted with four treatments and six repetitions with 30 birds each, for a total of 24 groups. The first experiment (Exp. I) used a reference level of available phosphorus (AP) with four treatments, as follows: Positive control= 0.45% AP starter diet/0.40% AP grower diet without phytase; Phytase X= 0.35% AP starter diet/0.30% AP grower diet + Phytase X; Phytase Y= 0.35% AP starter diet/0.30% AP grower diet + Phytase Y; and Negative control= 0.35% AP starter diet/0.30% AP grower diet, without phytase. In experiment II (Exp. II) the same treatments were used, but AP levels were reduced by 0.10%. The variables analyzed were: performance from one to 35 days, and bone quality at 35 days of age. Both experiments were analyzed using a completely randomized design. Results: In Exp. I, the positive control resulted in greater body weight gain (2,558 g; p<0,05) compared to Phytase Y (2,470 g) and negative control (2,472 g), and better feed conversion ratio (1.48; p<0,05) than the negative control (1.51). However, when phosphorus was reduced in Exp. II, the positive control and treatments with Phytase X showed better results (p<0.01) for feed intake (3,608 g and 3,593 g, respectively) and weight gain (2,430 g and 2,400 g, respectively) compared to the negative control (2,889 g of feed intake and 1,915 g of weight gain; p<0.01), which also presented low bone ash (36.8%) and phosphorus in the tibia (5.48%; p<0.01). Conclusion: Reducing AP concentration in diets not added with phytase negatively affects weight gain and feed intake of broilers.
Resumen Antecedentes: Aunque la fitasa ha sido ampliamente utilizada en nutrición aviar, sus efectos en pollos de engorde alimentados con bajos niveles de fósforo son poco comprendidos. Objetivo: Evaluar el efecto de dos fitasas comerciales sobre el desempeño y la calidad ósea de pollos de engorde alimentados con dietas con niveles normales y reducidos de fósforo. Métodos: Se realizaron dos experimentos con cuatro tratamientos y seis repeticiones de 30 aves cada una, totalizando 24 grupos. En el primero (Exp. I) se utilizó el nivel de referencia de fósforo disponible (Pd) con cuatro tratamientos, así: Control positivo= 0,45% Pd dieta inicial/0,40% Pd dieta de engorde, sin fitasa; Fitasa X= 0,35% Pd dieta inicial/0,30% Pd dieta engorde + Fitasa X; Fitasa Y= 0,35% Pd dieta inicial/0,30% Pd dieta engorde + Fitasa Y; finalmente, Control negativo= 0,35% Pd dieta inicial/0,30% Pd dieta engorde, sin fitasa. En el segundo experimento (Exp. II) se utilizaron los mismos tratamientos, pero reduciendo en 0,10% el nivel de Pd. Las variables analizadas fueron: desempeño de uno a siete días y de uno a 35 días y calidad ósea a los 35 días de edad. Ambos experimentos se analizaron mediante un diseño completamente aleatorizado. Resultados: En el Exp. I, control positivo presentó una mayor ganancia de peso corporal (2.558 g; p<0,05) en comparación con la Fitasa Y (2.470 g) y el control negativo (2.472 g), y mejor índice de conversión alimenticia (1,48; p<0,05) que el control negativo (1,51). Sin embargo, cuando se redujo el nivel de fósforo en el Exp. II, el control positivo y los tratamientos con Fitasa X mostraron mejores resultados (p<0,01) para el consumo de alimento (3.608 g y 3.593 g, respectivamente) y la ganancia de peso (2.430 g y 2.400 g, respectivamente) en comparación con el control negativo (2.889 g de consumo de alimento y 1.915 g de ganancia de peso; p<0,01), el cual también presentó baja concentración de cenizas óseas (36,8%) y fósforo en tibia (5,48%; p<0,01). Conclusión: La reducción de la concentración de Pd en dietas no aditivadas con fitasa afecta negativamente la ganancia de peso y el consumo de alimento del pollo de engorde.
Resumo Antecedentes: A fitase é uma enzima amplamente utilizada na nutrição de frangos de corte. No entanto existem várias opções comerciais e seus efeitos com níveis reduzidos de fósforo, são pouco avaliados. Objetivo: Avaliar o efeito da suplementação de fitases comerciais no desempenho e na qualidade óssea de frangos de corte, alimentados com níveis normais e reduzidos de fósforo. Métodos: Dois experimentos foram conduzidos com quatro tratamentos e seis repetições, com 30 aves em cada, totalizando 24 grupos. No primeiro (I) utilizou o nível de referência de fósforo disponível (Pd), totalizando quatro tratamentos: controle positivo= 0,45% Pd dieta inicial/0,40% Pd dieta crescimento, sem fitase; tratamento fitase X= 0,35% Pd dieta inicial/0,30% Pd dieta crescimento + Fitase X; tratamento fitase Y= 0,35% Pd dieta inicial/0,30% Pd dieta de crescimento + Fitase Y; e controle negativo 0,35% Pd dieta inicial/0,30% Pd dieta crescimento, sem fitase. O segundo experimento utilizou os mesmos tratamentos, reduzindo 0,10% o nível de Pd. As variáveis analisadas foram: desempenho de um a sete dias e de sete a 35 dias e qualidade óssea aos 35 dias. Ambos os experimentos foram analisados usando um delineamento inteiramente casualizado. Resultados: No Experimento I, o tratamento controle positivo apresentou maior ganho de peso corporal (2.557,86 g; p<0,05) em relação a fitase Y (2.470,27 g) e o controle negativo (2.471,73 g) e melhor índice de conversão alimentar (1,48; p<0,05) do que o tratamento controle negativo (1,51). Porém, quando o nível de fósforo foi reduzido no Experimento II, o controle positivo e os tratamentos com fitase X apresentaram os melhores resultados (p<0,01) para consumo de ração (3.608,0 g e 3.593,1 g, respectivamente) e ganho de peso corporal (2.429,8 g e 2.399,9 g, respectivamente) em comparação ao tratamento controle negativo (2.889,0 g de ingestão de ração e 1.915,3 g de ganho de peso corporal; p<0,01) que também apresentou baixa concentração de cinzas ósseas (36,8%) e fósforo na tíbia (5,48%; p<0,01). Conclusões. A redução da concentração de AP sem o uso de fitase reduz o ganho de peso corporal e o consumo de ração de frangos de corte.

This study aimed to assess the effects of ß-mannanase supplementation in metabolizable energy (ME)-reduced diets containing xylanase-phytase on performance, fecal score, blood biochemical and immunological profile, apparent total tract digestibility (ATTD), digesta passage rate, fecal microbiome, carcass traits and meat quality in finisher pigs (n = 40 entire male hybrid, 26.0 ± 0.9 kg) randomly assigned to 1 of 4 dietary treatments: a control diet containing isolated phytase and xylanase valued at 40 kcal of ME/kg (CD0), CD0 + ß-mannanase (0.3 g/kg valued at 30 kcal of ME/kg) (CD70), CD0 + ß-mannanase (0.3 g/kg valued at 45 kcal of ME/kg) (CD85), and CD0 + ß-mannanase (0.3 g/kg valued at 60 kcal of ME/kg) (CD100), with 10 pen replicates. Pigs fed CD0 diet showed (P = 0.002) greater ADFI. However, pigs fed CD0 diet showed (P = 0.009) lower G:F than those provided CD70 or CD85 diets. A greater (P < 0.001) superoxide dismutase concentration was observed in pigs fed CD70 diet. Pigs fed CD85 diet showed (P = 0.002) greater digestible protein than pigs fed CD0 or CD100 diets. Pigs fed CD70 diet showed an increase of 11.3% in digestible protein than those fed CD0 diet. In addition, greater (P < 0.001) digestible energy was observed in pigs fed CD85 diet. Pigs fed CD0 or CD100 diets showed greater (P < 0.05) Firmicutes:Bacteroidota ratio than those fed CD85 diet. The Muribaculaceae was more abundant (P = 0.030) in pigs fed CD70 diet than in those fed CD0 diet. The Prevotella was more abundant (P = 0.045) in pigs fed CD85 diet than in those fed CD100 diet. In conclusion, ß-mannanase supplementation in diets containing xylanase-phytase allows reducing 85 kcal of ME/kg because it improves gain to feed ratio, energy and protein usage, and backfat thickness without metabolic and intestinal ecosystem disorders in finisher pigs.

Resumen La Alta Capacidad intelectual (ACI) es una manifestación diferencial de la inteligencia humana, de base neurobiológica, pero que debe expresar su alto potencial a lo largo del desarrollo de la per sona que la posee, mediante la covariación de factores moduladores endógenos (como la competencia social) y exógenos. El objetivo del trabajo es doble: 1) conocer, comparativamente la competencia social de menores con y sin ACI, 2) diferenciar aquellas competencias sociales que podrían ser factores protectores o de riesgo frente al mal uso de las tecnologías digitales. Se administra la Social Skills Improvement System-Rating Scales a una muestra de n = 70 aprendices (n = 35 con ACI, n = 35 con inteligencia promedio) de 11 a 16 años, analizando si existen diferencias estadísticamente significativas en habilidades sociales y en dificultades de conducta. Los resultados muestran diferencias estadísticamente significativas, a favor de los participantes con ACI en habilidades sociales (especialmente en: Responsabilidad, Cooperación y Autocontrol) y mejor ajuste personal, con baja inci dencia de dificultades internalizantes y externalizantes. Se concluye y discute el rol protector de las habilidades sociales para afrontar contextos interactivos complejos como el derivado de la era digital y agresiones como el cyberbullying.
Abstract High Intellectual Ability (HIA) is a differential manifestation of human intelligence with a neurobiologi cal basis but which must express its high potential along the developmental trajectory through the covariation of endogenous (such as social competence) and exogenous modulating factors. The aim of the study is twofold: 1) to know, comparatively, the social competence of children with and without HIA, 2) to differentiate those social competences that could be protective or risk factors against the misuse of digital technologies. The Social Skills Improvement System-Rating Scales were administered to a sample of n = 70 learners (n = 35 with ICA, n = 35 with average intelligence) aged 11 to 16, analysing whether there are statistically significant differences in social skills and behavioural difficulties. Results show statistically significant differences in favour of participants with ICA in social skills (especially in: Responsibility, Co-operation and Self-Control) and better personal adjustment, with low incidence of internalising and externalising difficulties. We conclude and discuss the protective role of social skills in coping with complex interactive contexts such as the digital age and aggressions such as cyberbullying.

Salt stress impairs plant physiology and growth, but recent evidence suggests that silicon (Si) is able to mitigate this stressful condition. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to evaluate how different strategies of Si application impact on salt stress tolerance of an intermediate Si accumulator species (soybean). Therefore, we applied four treatments: Si-untreated plants (Si 0); foliar spraying at 20 mmol L-1 (Si F); nutritive solution addition at 2.0 mol L-1 (Si R), and combined foliar spraying at 20 mmol L-1 plus nutritive solution at 2.0 mmol L-1 (Si F + R). We investigated how Si application modified growth, leaf gas exchange, photosynthetic pigments, chlorophyll fluorescence, relative water content (RWC), nutrient accumulation, and ion homeostasis of soybean plants submitted to different levels of salt stress (50 and 100 mmol L-1 NaCl). RESULTS: Salinity induced an expressive reduction in ion accumulation, plant water status, and growth of soybean, while Si application promoted contrary effects and increased potassium (K+ ) accumulation, water status, photosynthetic pigment content, chlorophyll fluorescence parameters, and gas exchange attributes. Additionally, Si application enhanced Si accumulation associated with decreased Na+ uptake and improved morpho-physiological growth. CONCLUSION: The use of exogenous Si can be an efficient strategy to attenuate the harmful effects of salt stress in soybean plants. The best application strategy was observed with combined foliar spraying with Si included in the nutritive solution (Si F + R). © 2023 Society of Chemical Industry.

High Intellectual Ability (HIA) is a differential manifestation of human intelligence with a neurobiological basis but which must express its high potential along the developmental trajectory through the covariation of endogenous (such as social competence) and exogenous modulating factors. The aim of the study is twofold: 1) to know, comparatively, the social competence of children with and without HIA, 2) to differentiate those social competences that could be protective or risk factors against the misuse of digital technologies. The Social Skills Improvement System-Rating Scales were administered to a sample of n = 70 learners (n = 35 with ICA, n = 35 with average intelligence) aged 11 to 16, analysing whether there are statistically significant differences in social skills and behavioural difficulties. Results show statistically significant differences in favour of participants with ICA in social skills (especially in: Responsibility, Co-operation and Self-Control) and better personal adjustment, with low incidence of internalising and externalising difficulties. We conclude and discuss the protective role of social skills in coping with complex interactive contexts such as the digital age and aggressions such as cyberbullying.
La Alta Capacidad intelectual (ACI) es una manifestación diferencial de la inteligencia humana, de base neurobiológica, pero que debe expresar su alto potencial a lo largo del desarrollo de la persona que la posee, mediante la covariación de factores moduladores endógenos (como la competencia social) y exógenos. El objetivo del trabajo es doble: 1) conocer, comparativamente la competencia social de menores con y sin ACI, 2) diferenciar aquellas competencias sociales que podrían ser factores protectores o de riesgo frente al mal uso de las tecnologías digitales. Se administra la Social Skills Improvement System-Rating Scales a una muestra de n = 70 aprendices (n = 35 con ACI, n = 35 con inteligencia promedio) de 11 a 16 años, analizando si existen diferencias estadísticamente significativas en habilidades sociales y en dificultades de conducta. Los resultados muestran diferencias estadísticamente significativas, a favor de los participantes con ACI en habilidades sociales (especialmente en: Responsabilidad, Cooperación y Autocontrol) y mejor ajuste personal, con baja incidencia de dificultades internalizantes y externalizantes. Se concluye y discute el rol protector de las habilidades sociales para afrontar contextos interactivos complejos como el derivado de la era digital y agresiones como el cyberbullying.

Our objective was to evaluate the effect of supplementing ß-mannanase enzyme, with and without sugarcane yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae), on broiler chickens aged 1-21 days. The study used 720 one-day-old male Cobb chicks in a randomized design, with six treatments and six replications of 20 birds each. The treatments were: basal diet (BD), BD + ß-mannanase (100 g/t), 7% sugarcane yeast (SY), SY + ß-mannanase (80 g/t), SY + ß-mannanase (100 g/t), and SY + ß-mannanase (120 g/t). Zootechnical results (animal performance) were evaluated during the pre-starter (1 to 7 day-old) and starter (1 to 21 day-old) phases, as well as small intestine morphometry (duodenum, jejunum, and ileum) and diets' economic viability. Data were subjected to variance analysis using the SAS software, and the means were compared by the Student Newman Keuls (SNK) test. In the pre-starter phase, treatments with YD + ß-mannanase (80, 100, and 120 g/t) showed the best feed conversion averages. In the starter phase, chickens consuming the basal diet (BD) and BD + ß-mannanase showed better average weights, weight gains, and feed conversion rates. For intestinal morphometry, shallower ileal crypts were observed in the treatment with YD + ß-mannanase (120 g/t) compared to the basal diet, and wider ileal villi were observed in the treatment with YD + ß-mannanase (100 g/t) compared to the diet with YD + ß-mannanase (80 g/t). The thickness of the muscular wall in the duodenum was lower in chickens consuming BD compared to BD + ß-mannanase (100 g/t), higher in YD and supplementation with 100 g/t compared to 80 and 120 g/t in the jejunum, and higher in diets with ß-mannanase supplementation compared to BD and YD in the ileum. For economic viability, adding 7% sugar cane yeast, with or without enzyme, increased the average feed cost and cost index, and reduced the economic efficiency index. Based on the zootechnical results, YD + ß-mannanase (120 g/t) is recommended for the pre-starter and starter phases. However, using sugar cane yeast with or without ß-mannanase enzyme supplementation is not economically viable in the 1- to 21-day period.
Objetivou-se avaliar o efeito da suplementação da enzima ß-mananase com e sem levedura de cana de açúcar (Saccharomyces cerevisiae) para frangos de corte 1 a 21 dias de idade. Utilizou-se 720 pintos de corte de um dia de idade, machos, da linhagem Cobb, distribuídos em delineamento inteiramente casualizado com seis tratamentos e, seis repetições de 20 aves cada. Os tratamentos foram: Dieta basal (DB); DB + ß-mananase (100 g/t); DB + 7% de levedura de cana-de-açúcar (DL); DL + ß-mananase (80 g/t); DL + ß-mananase (100 g/t); DL + ß-mananase (120 g/t). Avaliou-se o desempenho zootécnico na fase pré-inicial (1 a 7) e na fase inicial (1 a 21 dias de idade), a morfometria do intestino delgado (duodeno, jejuno e íleo) e, a viabilidade econômica da ração. Os dados foram submetidos à análise da variância do programa SAS e as médias foram comparadas pelo teste de Student Newmann Keuls (SNK). Na fase pré-inicial, os tratamentos com DL + ß-mananase (80, 100 e 120 g/t) apresentaram as melhores médias de conversão alimentar. Na fase inicial, aos frangos que consumiram à dieta basal (DB) e DB + ß-mananase apresentaram peso médio, ganho de peso e conversão alimentar melhores. Para a morfometria intestinal, criptas ileais mais rasas foram observadas no tratamento com DL+ ß-mananase (120 g/t) em relação a dieta basal e vilos ileais mais largos foram observados no tratamento com DL+ ß-mananase (100 g/t) em relação a dieta com DL+ ß-mananase (80 g/t). A espessura da parede muscular, no duodeno, foi menor nos frangos que consumiram a DB em relação a DB + ß-mananase (100 g/t), no jejuno, foi maior na DL e na suplementação com 100 g/t em relação a 80 e 120 g/t e no íleo, foi maior nas dietas com suplementação de ß-mananase em relação a DB e DL. Para a viabilidade econômica, a adição de 7% de levedura de cana-de-açúcar, com ou sem enzima proporcionaram aumento do custo médio de ração e índice de custo, e redução do índice de eficiência econômica. Com base nos resultados zootécnicos recomenda-se DL + ß-mananase (120g/t) para a fase pré-inicial e inicial. Contudo, o uso de levedura de cana-de-açúcar com e sem suplementação da enzima ß-mananase não é economicamente viável no período de 1 a 21 dias.

The aim of this study was to investigate the influence of exogenous carbon supplementation and nitrogen source reduction on Chlorella fusca LEB 111 growth, biomass composition, and polyhydroxybutyrate accumulation. First, assays were performed with 50 % and 25 % reduced nitrogen source concentrations (NaNO3). In the second stage, the influence of culture supplementation with 10, 20, and 30 mg L-1 D-xylose, associated with 50 and 25 % reductions in NaNO3, was evaluated. The experiments conducted with a 25 % reduction in NaNO3 and supplementation with 10 mg L-1 D-xylose resulted in a positive effect on the biomass productivity of C. fusca LEB 111, with production as high as 354.4 mg L-1 d-1. The maximum concentration of PHB extracted from C. fusca LEB 111 was 3.7 % (w w-1) and was obtained when the microalgae were cultivated with a 25 % of reduction in NaNO3 and supplementation of D-xylose at 20 mg L-1. Therefore, this study brings new perspectives regarding reducing the use of nutritional sources and using exogenous carbon sources in using microalgae to produce molecules of high biotechnological potential.

Powdery mildew severely affects several important crops and cash plants. Disruption of mildew resistance locus O (MLO) genes elevates resistance against powdery mildew in several plants. However, whether rubber tree (Heveae brasiliensis) MLO proteins are linked to susceptibility remains unknown, owing to technical limitations in the genetic manipulation of this woody plant. A previous study showed that the H. brasiliensis MLO-like protein HbMLO12 demonstrates high amino acid sequence similarity with the known Arabidopsis MLO protein AtMLO12. In this study, we investigated whether HbMLO12 regulates susceptibility to powdery mildew. H. brasiliensis leaves take up exogenously synthesized double-stranded RNAs (dsRNAs), and foliar application of dsRNA homologous to HbMLO12 gene specifically induces HbMLO12 silencing in H. brasiliensis leaf tissues. Notably, HbMLO12 silencing inhibited fungal infection and elevated the immune response during interaction with the rubber tree powdery mildew fungus. Furthermore, the heterologous expression of HbMLO12 suppressed bacterial flg22- and fungal chitin-induced immune responses and enhanced bacterial infection in Arabidopsis. Feline leukaemia virus (FeLV) is a retrovirus that infects domestic and wild cats around the world. FeLV infection is associated with the development of neoplasms, bone marrow disorders and immunosuppression. Viral subgroups arise from mutations in the FeLV genome or from recombination of FeLV with ancestral endogenous retroviruses in the cat genome. The retroviral endogenisation process has allowed generation of a diversity of endogenous viruses, both functional and defective. These elements may be part of the normal functioning of the feline genome and may also interact with FeLV to form recombinant FeLV subgroups, enhance pathogenicity of viral subgroups, or inhibit and/or regulate other retroviral infections. Recombination of the env gene occurs most frequently and appears to be the most significant in terms of both the quantity and diversification of pathogenic effects in the viral population, as well as affecting cell tropism and types of disease that occur in infected cats. This review focuses on available information regarding genetic diversity, pathogenesis and diagnosis of FeLV as a result of the interaction between endogenous and exogenous viruses.

Resumen La necesidad de mejorar el acceso a servicios de salud para la comunidad transgénero se ha vuelto evidente, especialmente en relación con el riesgo cardiovascular, que es más alto en comparación con la población general. Los procedimientos quirúrgicos y las terapias hormonales son comunes en esta población para reafirmar la identidad de género, pero plantean desafíos, ya que se asocian con alteraciones en el metabolismo de lípidos, la concentración de grasa corporal y la resistencia a la insulina. Además, existe un aumento en el riesgo de eventos cardiovasculares adversos, como tromboembolia venosa, accidente cerebrovascular e infarto de miocardio. La influencia de las hormonas sexuales en las propiedades electrofisiológicas del corazón ha sido estudiada, destacando diferencias entre géneros que pueden predisponer a la población transgénero a arritmias cardiacas. La terapia hormonal exógena, tanto para mujeres como para hombres trans, puede afectar el intervalo QT y aumentar el riesgo de arritmias, incluida la fibrilación auricular. Aunque la incidencia de arritmias en la población transgénero aún no está completamente clara, la evidencia sugiere la necesidad de un monitoreo cardiovascular cuidadoso y la consideración de factores de riesgo antes de iniciar terapias hormonales.
Abstract The need to improve access to health services for the transgender community has become evident, especially concerning cardiovascular risk, which is higher compared to the general population. Surgical procedures and hormone therapies are common in this population to affirm gender identity, but they pose challenges as they are associated with disruptions in lipid metabolism, body fat concentration, and insulin resistance. Additionally, there is an increased risk of adverse cardiovascular events such as venous thromboembolism, stroke, and myocardial infarction. The influence of sex hormones on the electrophysiological properties of the heart has been studied, highlighting gender differences that may predispose the transgender population to cardiac arrhythmias. Exogenous hormone therapy, for both transgender women and men, can affect the QT interval and increase the risk of arrhythmias, including atrial fibrillation. Although the incidence of arrhythmias in the transgender population is not entirely clear, evidence suggests the need for careful cardiovascular monitoring and consideration of risk factors before initiating hormone therapies.

Two experiments were carried out to evaluate the effectsof protease addition to the diet of broilers at a higher level (1× or 2×) thanthe nutritional value proposed for the enzyme. The first experiment, 1280 day-old chicks (Cobb500®) were randomly allocated (randomized block design, 2×2+1 factorial arrangement),five treatments, eight replicates containing32 birds/replicate. Treatmentsconsisted: control diet without protease (CD); CD + 1× nutritional value of the enzyme (CDM1); CD + 2× nutritional value of the enzyme (CDM2); CDM1 + protease; and CDM2 + protease. The experimental period was 42 days. The mean weight (AFW), feed intake (FI), weight gain (WG), feed conversion, and carcass yield were evaluated. Significant differences were observed for AFW, WG, FI, abdominal fat yield, and feet percentage in the carcass. In the second experiment, 120 Cobb500®chicks at 14 days of age were allotted in a completely randomized design, 2×2+1 factorial arrangement, five treatments, six replicates withfour birds/replicate. The treatments were consistent with the first experiment. Significant improvements in the nitrogen balance wereobserved for the broilersthat received protease.The use of the enzyme tested is recommended with the recommended nutritional matrix, improving the zootechnical indices of broilers.(AU)

The objective of this study was to evaluate whether the addition of the enzymes phytase and xylanase, isolated or associated, in the liquid form after feed pelletization could improve energy utilization and digestibility of calcium and phosphorus by broiler chickens. Three experiments were performed using 120 birds each, divided into five treatments with eight replicates per group (n = 3), identified as: experiment 1 (xylanase: control, 1000 IU, 1500 IU, 2000 IU, 2500 IU), experiment 2 (phytase: control, 500 FTU, 1000 FTU, 1500 FTU, 2000 FTU), experiment 3 (xylanase + phytase: control, 3000 IU + 500 FTU, 3000 IU + 1000 FTU, 3000 IU + 1500 FTU, 3000 IU + 2000 FTU). Samples for digestibility tests were collected at 14 to 21 days of age. Therefore, the inclusion of liquid phytase and liquid phytase + xylanase after pelletization in broiler diets has become a relevant way to reduce the inclusion of inorganic P, which can reduce the cost of feed and P excretion in the environment. Furthermore, it is an interesting strategy to avoid enzyme denaturation in the pelleting process.(AU)
