RESUMO

The increased fish consumption by the growing human population in the world translates into an increase in fish waste. The reintroduction of these fish by-products into food and feed chains presents economic benefits and contributes to counteracting their negative environmental impact. Under this context, the present study aimed to evaluate the effects of the dietary inclusion of fish hydrolysate and oil obtained from fish waste (experimental diet) in substitution of shrimp hydrolysate and salmon oil (control diet) mainly imported from third countries on palatability, apparent total tract digestibility, fecal characteristics and metabolites, blood fatty acid profile, flatulence, and coat quality of adult dogs. A two-bowl test was performed to evaluate palatability by the pairwise comparison between the two diets. A feeding trial was conducted according to a crossover design with two diets (control and experimental diets), six adult Beagle dogs per diet, and two periods of 6 weeks each. The replacement of shrimp hydrolysate and salmon oil with fish hydrolysate and oil did not affect the first diet approach and taste, as well as the intake ratio. Generally, the digestibility of dry matter, nutrients, and energy was not affected by diet, but the intake of digestible crude protein (CP) and ether extract was higher, respectively, with the control and the experimental diet. The higher intake of eicosapentaenoic acid and docosahexaenoic acid with the experimental diet was reflected in a higher content of these long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids and the omega-3 index of red blood cells, but it did not affect coat quality. The significantly higher intake of digestible CP with the control diet might have contributed to the higher fecal ammonia-N and valerate concentrations. Daily fecal output and characteristics were similar between diets. Overall, results suggest that fish hydrolysate and oil from the agrifood industry might constitute sustainable functional ingredients for dog feeding while adding value for wild fisheries, aquaculture, and fish farming under a circular economy approach and reducing dependence on imports from third countries with a high carbon footprint.

Rice protein (RP) and polyphenols are often used in functional foods. This study investigated the non-covalent interactions between RP and three polyphenols (curcumin, CUR; quercetin, QUE; resveratrol, RES) and used the complexes as emulsifiers to create emulsions. Three polyphenols interacted with RP to varying extents, with QUE showing the greatest binding affinity and inducing the greatest alterations in its secondary structure. Molecular docking analysis elucidated the driving forces between them including hydrophobic interactions, hydrogen bonding, and van der Waals forces. Combination with QUE or RES induced structural changes of RP, increasing particle size of complexes. The synergistic effect of polyphenols and protein also enhanced radical scavenging capacity of complexes. Compared to pure protein, all complexes successfully created emulsions with smaller particle size (378-395 nm vs. 470 nm), higher absolute potential (37.43-38.26 mV vs. 35.62 mV), and greater lipid oxidation stability by altering protein conformation.

PURPOSE: To analyze the clinical one-year evolution of healed and rerupture lesions in patients who received a rotator cuff repair plus Superior Capsular Reconstruction (SCR) with the long head of the biceps (LHB). Moreover, to compare this evolution between men and women. METHODS: A pilot study was conducted on patients who underwent a rotator cuff repair plus SCR with LHB between February 2021 and June 2022. All patients completed pre-operative and one-year post-operative evaluations for tendon type of tear and tendon integrity using Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)after one year of the surgery. Besides, functionality was evaluated with the American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons (ASES) score; the visual analog scale for pain (VAS); and the Constant score. RESULTS: A total of 38 patients completed the one-year final evaluation, they presented an increased functionality score to 83 and 86 in Constant and ASES scales (p < .001), respectively. Besides, 84% of the patients presented a healed cuff, while rerupture occurred in 16% of the patients. There were differences between the healed and rerupture patients in the total Constant score, with a remarkable increase in the strength subscale, almost double for patients with healed cuff (p < .001); in the same way, daily life activity score, and balance subscale increased, while pain score decreased in the healed cuff group (p < .05). There was no difference in functionality between men and women (p > .05). Besides, almost all patients achieved the MCID in both ASES and Constant total scores, irrespectively of the healing group. CONCLUSION: The cuff repair using SCR with the LHB achieved a low percentage of rerupture and a functional improvement after one year of follow-up. Patients who healed the lesion presented more strength and better performance in daily life activities than those with cuff repurture. Thus, SCR + LHB procedure can be considered an efficient technique for rotator cuff repair surgery for both men and women. Although a comparison with a control group is needed to confirm these findings.

OBJECTIVE: Investigate the effects of botulinum toxin type A (BoNT-A) combined with physical therapy on functional capacity in children with spastic cerebral palsy (CP). METHODS: Twenty-four children with spastic CP were treated with either BoNT-A and physical therapy or physical therapy alone. RESULTS: Significant differences (p < 0.05) were found after 30 days of treatment for the Berg Scale, Timed Up and Go (TUG) test, Ashworth Scale and Pediatric Evaluation of Disability Inventory (PEDI) and after three months for the Berg Scale, TUG test and PEDI. No significant differences (p > 0.05) were found in the control group. DISCUSSION: BoNT-A combined with physical therapy leads to significant improvements in spasticity and functionality in children with CP within a period of three months from the onset of treatment.

L-carnitine, available as feed additive, is essential for the beta-oxidation of free fatty acids in the mitochondrial matrix. It provides energy to immune cells and may positively impact the functionality of leukocytes during the acute phase response, a situation of high energy demand. To test this hypothesis, German Holstein cows were assigned to a control group (CON, n = 26) and an L-carnitine supplemented group (CAR, n = 27, rumen-protected L-carnitine product: 125 g/cow/d, corresponded to total L-carnitine intake: 25 g/cow/d, supplied with concentrate) and received an intravenous bolus injection of lipopolysaccharides (LPS, 0.5 µg/kg body weight, E. coli) on day 111 postpartum as a model of standardized systemic inflammation. Blood samples were collected from day 1 ante injectionem until day 14 post injectionem (pi), with frequent sampling through an indwelling venous catheter from 0.5 h pi to 12 h pi. All parameters of the white blood cell count responded significantly to LPS, while only a few parameters were affected by L-carnitine supplementation. The mean eosinophil count, as well as the percentage of basophils were significantly higher in CAR than in CON over time, which may be due to an increased membrane stability. However, phagocytosis and production of reactive oxygen species by leukocytes remained unchanged following L-carnitine supplementation. In conclusion, although supplementation with 25 g L-carnitine per cow and day resulted in increased proportions of specific leukocyte populations, it had only minor effects on the functional parameters studied in mid-lactating dairy cows during LPS-induced inflammation, and there was no evidence of direct improvement of immune functionality.

The purpose of this study was to compare the structural and functional of protein from yak milk residue, which collected from different elevations (MRP1 and MRP2) in Tibet, as well as their potential for enhancing the quality of non-fat yogurt. The results showed that MRP1 exhibited higher levels of ß-sheet, turbidity, particle size, and gel properties. MRP2 had better flexibility, emulsification, foaming, water/oil absorption capacity. The addition of MRP1 (3%) could improve texture and sensory properties of yogurt. Although MRP2 yogurt had higher hardness, gumminess, chewiness and water holding capacity, poor mouthfeel. Rheological test showed that MRPs yogurt exhibited typical gel-like and shear-thinning behavior. Moreover, the fortification of non-fat yogurts with MRP1 brought the formation of larger protein clusters with a more tightly knit network of smaller pores. These results indicate that MRP1 can be used as a fat substitute to improve the quality of non-fat yogurt.

Objective: The purpose of this research was to design and psychometrically validate a new instrument (the Biobehavioural Pain and Movement Questionnaire/BioPMovQ), which assesses the relationship between pain and various factors related to motor behaviour from a biobehavioural perspective. Methods: A mixed-method design combining a qualitative study with an observational and cross-sectional study was employed to develop (content validity) and psychometrically validate (construct validity, reliability and concurrent/discriminant validity) a new instrument. A total of 200 patients with chronic musculoskeletal pain were recruited. Results: According to the exploratory factor analysis, the final version of the BioPMovQ consists of 16 items distributed across 4 subscales (1, disability, 2, self-efficacy for physical activity; 3, movement avoidance behaviours; and 4, self-perceived functional ability), all with an eigen value greater than 1, explaining 55.79% of the variance. The BioPMovQ showed high internal consistency (Cronbach's α = 0.82; McDonald's ω = 0.83). The intraclass correlation coefficient was 0.86 (95% confidence interval 0.76 to 0.91), which was considered to demonstrate excellent test-retest reliability. The standard error of measurement and minimal detectable change were 3.43 and 8.04 points, respectively. No floor or ceiling effects were identified. There was a positive, significant and moderate magnitude correlation with the Graded Chronic Pain Scale (r = 0.54), kinesiophobia (r = 0.60), pain catastrophising (r = 0.44) and chronic pain self-efficacy (r = -0.31). Conclusion: The BioPMovQ showed good psychometric properties. Based on the findings of this study, the BioPMovQ can be used in research and clinical practice to assess patients with chronic musculoskeletal pain.

Accumulation of pathogenic factors in the blood may cause irreversible damage and may even be life-threatening. Hemoperfusion is an effective technique for eliminating pathogenic factors, which is widely used in the treatment of various diseases including liver failure, renal failure, sepsis, and others. Hemoperfusion adsorbents are crucial in this process as they specifically bind and remove the target pathogenic factors. This review describes the development of hemoperfusion adsorbents, detailing the different properties exhibited by inorganic materials, organic polymers, and new materials. Advances in natural and synthetic polymers and novel materials manufacturing techniques have driven the expansion of hemoperfusion adsorbents in clinical applications. Stimuli-responsive (smart responsive) adsorbents with controllable molecular binding properties have many promising and environmentally friendly biomedical applications. Knowledge gaps, future research directions, and prospects for hemoperfusion adsorbents are discussed.

The development of cationic polymers as alternative materials to antibiotics necessitates addressing the challenge of balancing their antimicrobial activity and toxicity. Here we propose a precise switching strategy inspired by biomimetic voltage-gated ion channels, enabling controlled activation and inhibition of cationic antimicrobial functions through protein conformational transitions in diverse physiological environments. Following thermodynamic studies on the specific recognition between mannose end groups on polycations and concanavalin A (ConA), we synthesized a type of ConA-polycation nanoparticle. The nanoparticle was inhibited under neutral conditions, with cationic moieties shielded by ConA's ß-sheet. This shielding suppresses their antimicrobial activity, thereby ensuring satisfactory biocompatibility. In mildly acidic environments, however, the transition of a portion of ConA to an α-helix conformation exposed cations at the particle periphery, activating antibacterial functionality. Compared to inhibited nanoparticles, those in the activated state exhibited a 32-256 times reduction in the minimum bactericidal concentration against bacteria and fungi (2-16 µg/mL). In a murine acute pulmonary infection model, intravenous administration of inhibited nanoparticles effectively reduced bacterial counts by 4-log within 12 h. The biomimetic design, regulating cationic antimicrobial functionality through the alteration in protein secondary structure, significantly retards bacterial resistance development, holding great promise for intelligent antimicrobial materials. STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE: Cationic antimicrobial polymers exhibit advantages distinct from antibiotics due to their lower propensity for resistance development. However, the presence of cationic moieties also poses a threat to healthy cells and tissues, significantly constraining their potential for clinical applications. To address this challenge, we propose a biomimetic strategy that mimics voltage-gated ion channels to activate the antimicrobial functionality of cations selectively in bacterial environments through the conformational transitions of proteins between ß-sheets and α-helices. In healthy tissues, the antimicrobial functionality is inhibited, ensuring satisfactory biocompatibility. Antimicrobial cationic materials capable of intelligent switching between an activated state and an inhibited state in response to environmental changes offer an effective strategy to prevent the development of resistance and mitigate potential side effects.

BACKGROUND: Reproductive health literacy and menstrual health awareness play a crucial role in ensuring the health and well-being of women and people who menstruate. Further, awareness of one's own menstrual cycle patterns and associated symptoms can help individuals identify and manage conditions of the menstrual cycle such as premenstrual syndrome (PMS) and premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD). Digital health products, and specifically menstrual health apps, have the potential to effect positive change due to their scalability and ease of access. OBJECTIVE: The primary aim of this study was to measure the efficacy of a menstrual and reproductive health app, Flo, in improving health literacy and health and well-being outcomes in menstruating individuals with and without PMS and PMDD. Further, we explored the possibility that the use of the Flo app could positively influence feelings around reproductive health management and communication about health, menstrual cycle stigma, unplanned pregnancies, quality of life, work productivity, absenteeism, and body image. METHODS: We conducted 2 pilot, 3-month, unblinded, 2-armed, remote randomized controlled trials on the effects of using the Flo app in a sample of US-based (1) individuals who track their cycles (n=321) or (2) individuals who track their cycles and are affected by PMS or PMDD (n=117). RESULTS: The findings revealed significant improvements at the end of the study period compared to baseline for our primary outcomes of health literacy (cycle tracking: D̄=1.11; t311=5.73, P<.001; PMS or PMDD: D̄=1.20; t115=3.76, P<.001) and menstrual health awareness (D̄=3.97; t311=7.71, P<.001), health and well-being (D̄=3.44; t311=5.94, P<.001), and PMS or PMDD symptoms burden (D̄=-7.08; t115=-5.44, P<.001). Improvements were also observed for our secondary outcomes of feelings of control and management over health (D̄=1.01; t311=5.08, P<.001), communication about health (D̄=0.93; t311=2.41, P=.002), menstrual cycle stigma (D̄=-0.61; t311=-2.73, P=.007), and fear of unplanned pregnancies (D̄=-0.22; t311=-2.11, P=.04) for those who track their cycles, as well as absenteeism from work and education due to PMS or PMDD (D̄=-1.67; t144=-2.49, P=.01). CONCLUSIONS: These pilot randomized controlled trials demonstrate that the use of the Flo app improves menstrual health literacy and awareness, general health and well-being, and PMS or PMDD symptom burden. Considering the widespread use and affordability of the Flo app, these findings show promise for filling important gaps in current health care provisioning such as improving menstrual knowledge and health. Plant-based proteins, like those derived from hemp and rapeseed can contribute significantly to a balanced diet and meet human daily nutritional requirements by providing essential nutrients such as protein, fiber, vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. According to numerous recent research papers, the consumption of plant-based proteins has been associated with numerous health benefits, including a reduced risk of chronic diseases such as heart disease, diabetes, and certain cancers. Plant-based diets are often lower in saturated fat and cholesterol and higher in fiber and phytonutrients, which can support overall health and well-being. Present research investigates the nutritional attributes, functional properties, and potential food applications of hemp and rapeseed protein for a potential use in new food-product development, with a certain focus on identifying anti-nutritional factors and bioactive compounds. Through comprehensive analysis, anti-nutritional factors and bioactive compounds were elucidated, shedding light on their impact on protein quality and digestibility. The study also delves into the functional properties of hemp and rapeseed protein, unveiling their versatility in various food applications. Insights from this research contribute to a deeper understanding of the nutritional value and functional potential of hemp and rapeseed protein, paving the way for their further utilization in innovative food products with enhanced nutritional value and notable health benefits.

Background: Adults with conditions that affect their appearance, known as visible differences, can experience appearance concerns, social anxiety, and depression. Interventions have been developed for this population to facilitate adjustment and coping skills; however, they have limited evidence of efficacy. The Expand Your Horizon [Alleva, J. Expand Your Horizon: A programme that improves body image and reduces self-objectification by training women to focus on body functionality. Body Image, 15, 81-89. https://doi.org/10.1016/j.bodyim.2015.07.001] online functionality-based writing programme was adapted for adults with visible differences. Method: A pilot randomised controlled trial with a wait-list control group was carried out to assess preliminary intervention efficacy and gain information about the acceptability and feasibility of the programme. Forty-four adults aged 21-63 years (M = 40.21; SD = 12.05) with visible differences took part. Various facets of body image (i.e. functionality appreciation and body appreciation) as well as depression and anxiety were assessed immediately pre- and post-intervention and at three-months. Results: Participants reported enjoying the programme, felt that the format was acceptable, and it significantly increased functionality appreciation, which was maintained at three-months. However, there were no improvements in body appreciation, depression, and anxiety. Conclusions: In future, a full trial should be carried out with an active control group.

UNASSIGNED: Excess body weight has become a global epidemic and a significant risk factor for developing chronic diseases, which are the leading causes of worldwide morbidities. Adipose tissue (AT), primarily composed of adipocytes, stores substantial amounts of energy and plays a crucial role in maintaining whole-body glucose and lipid metabolism. This helps prevent excessive body fat accumulation and lipotoxicity in peripheral tissues. In addition, AT contains endothelial cells and a substantial population of immune cells (constituting 60-70% of non-adipocyte cells), including macrophages, T and B lymphocytes, and natural killer cells. These resident immune cells engage in crosstalk with adipocytes, contributing to the maintenance of metabolic and immune homeostasis in AT. An exacerbated inflammatory response or inadequate immune resolution can lead to chronic systemic low-grade inflammation, triggering the development of metabolic alterations and the onset of chronic diseases. This review aims to elucidate the regulatory mechanisms through which immune cells influence AT function and energy homeostasis. We also focus on the interactions and functional dynamics of immune cell populations, highlighting their role in maintaining the delicate balance between metabolic health and obesity-related inflammation. Finally, understanding immunometabolism is crucial for unraveling the pathogenesis of metabolic diseases and developing targeted immunotherapeutic strategies. Metal-organic frameworks (MOF) hold great promise for CO2 adsorption due to their high surface areas, tunable pore sizes, and the ability to modify their chemical properties to enhance CO2 affinity. MOFs tagged with functional groups either at linker or metal sites have shown improved CO2 uptake capacity and selectivity. This study focuses on investigating the potential of selective CO2 adsorption using amino functionalization of linker forming Ce-UiO-66. The physicochemical properties and characteristics of MOFs to determine the degree of amino functionalization and structural stability were examined using powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), Fourier transformer infra-red (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and N2 porosimetry and specific surface area (BET). This work unveils a novel array of results on CO2, N2 and water vapour adsorption on Ce-UiO-66-NH2. The amino-functionalized Ce-UiO-66-NH2 shows 63 % higher CO2 uptake and 84 % higher CO2/N2 selectivity at 273 K and 1 bar over Ce-UiO-66. Ce-UiO-66-NH2 also shows excellent structural stability after gas and vapour sorption making Ce-UiO-66-NH2 potential adsorbent for CO2 capture.

The increasing world population requires the production of nutrient-rich foods. Protein is an essential macronutrient for healthy individuals. Interest in using plant proteins in foods has increased in recent years due to their sustainability and nutritional benefits. Dry and wet protein fractionation methods have been developed to increase protein yield, purity, and functional and nutritional qualities. This review explores the recent developments in pretreatments and fractionation processes used for producing pulse protein concentrates and isolates. Functionality differences between pulse proteins obtained from different fractionation methods and the use of fractionated pulse proteins in different food applications are also critically reviewed. Pretreatment methods improve the de-hulling efficiency of seeds prior to fractionation. Research on wet fractionation methods focuses on improving sustainability and functionality of proteins while studies on dry methods focus on increasing protein yield and purity. Hybrid methods produced fractionated proteins with higher yield and purity while also improving protein functionality and process sustainability. Dry and hybrid fractionated proteins have comparable or superior functionalities relative to wet fractionated proteins. Pulse protein ingredients are successfully incorporated into various food formulations with notable changes in their sensory properties. Future studies could focus on optimizing the fractionation process, improving protein concentrate palatability, and optimizing formulations using pulse proteins.

Most traditional synthetic dyes and functional reagents used in silk fabrics are not biodegradable and lack green environmental protection. Natural dyes have attracted more and more attention because of their coloring, functionalization effects, and environmental benefits. In this study, natural dyes were extracted from lac and used for coloring and functionalization in silk fabrics without any other harmful dyes. The extraction conditions were studied and analyzed by the univariate method. The optimal extraction process was that the volume ratio of ethanol to water was 60:40 with a solid-liquid ratio of 1:10, and reacting under the neutrality condition for 1 h at 70 °C. Silk fabric can be dyed dark owing to the certain lifting property of lac. After being dyed by Al3+ post-medium, the levels of the washing fastness, light fastness, and friction fastness of silk fabric are all above four with excellent fastness. The results show that the dyed silk fabrics have good UV protection, antioxidation, and antibacterial properties. The UV protection coefficient UPF is 42.68, the antioxidant property is 98.57%, and the antibacterial property can reach more than 80%. Therefore, the dyeing and functionalization of silk fabrics by utilizing naturally lac dyes show broad prospects in terms of the application of green sustainable dyeing and functionalization.

BACKGROUND: The diversity of patients' symptomatology among people seeking treatment on community-based mental health services poses significant challenges to traditional models of care. Recent approaches favor identifying transdiagnostic factors that allow a better understanding of patient heterogeneity and designing more effective and quality interventions. This study examines the heterogeneity of patients with internalizing symptoms based on profiles identified with cognitive and motivational control variables. Differences between these profiles on dimensional measures of psychopathology and quality of life are examined. METHODS: 263 patients were selected by non-probabilistic sampling procedures on mental health services in the province of Huelva (Spain). A latent class analysis on the standardized scale scores of The Behavioral Inhibition/Behavioral Activation System Scales and the Effortful Control Scale of the Adult Temperament Questionnaire Short-Form was conducted. Profiles were compared on the scores of the Inventory of Depression and Anxiety Symptoms-II, the WHO Disability Assessment Schedule II, and the Health Assessment Questionnaire SF-36. RESULTS: The four latent profile solution is the one that showed the best fit indicators and substantive interpretability, with a kappa of 0.94 in the cross-validation procedure with 75% of the sample. No sex differences were found between the profiles (χ32 5.17, p = .160). Profiles #1 and #3, both characterized by an imbalance between low activation and high inhibition, had lower well-being, lower functionality, and quality of life. When comparing profile #2 (featuring the highest inhibitory control) lower scores on most internalizing scales are observed, specially claustrophobia, social anxiety, panic mania. Profile #4 (low control, high activation, and high inhibition) showed greater scores on both mania and euphoria and lower scores on emotional role. CONCLUSIONS: We identified four distinctive profiles that had overly increased behavioral inhibition (as expected in internalizing disorders) and differed in the degree of imbalance between inhibition and activation systems, and between motivational systems and top-down cognitive control. The profile characterized by high activation and reduced cognitive (inhibitory) control was the one showing greater mood-related symptoms and lower levels of quality of life. These profiles could be generated by treatment providers to guide clinical management in an evidence-based manner.

Residual lipids (RL) in whey protein isolate (WPI) are detrimental to optimal functional applications (like foaming and low turbidity) and contribute to off-flavor development during powder storage. The objective of this research was to prepare an experimental WPI by removing RL without using the traditional microfiltration (MF) process and compare its properties with commercially available WPIs made using MF and some other whey powders. We hypothesize that by adjusting the pH of whey to < 5.0, we would be close to the isoelectric point of any remaining denatured proteins (DP) and phospholipoproteins (PLP), and therefore reduce electrostatic repulsion between these molecules. Further, demineralization of the acidified whey protein solution by ultrafiltration (UF) combined with diafiltration (DF) should reduce ionic hindrance to aggregation and thereby help with the aggregation of these denatured proteins as well as most RL; centrifugation or clarification could be used to remove these materials. Calcium should also be more extensively removed by this approach, which should improve the heat stability of the experimental WPI. Demineralization was achieved on a pilot scale by acidifying liquid (cheese) whey protein concentrate (WPC-34) to pH 4.5 using HCl, and UF the whey protein solution along with extensive DF using acidified (pH∼3.5) reverse osmosis filtered (RO) water. Demineralized whey protein solution was adjusted to various combinations of pH (4.1 to 4.9), conductivities (500 to 2000 µS.cm-1), and protein concentrations (1 to 7%) and then centrifuged at 10,000 × g for 10 min. The effective sedimentation (precipitation) of RL in these treatments was estimated by measuring the turbidity of the supernatants. Maximum precipitation was observed at pH 4.5-4.7. Reducing conductivity via UF/DF increased the precipitation of RL due to reduced ionic hindrance to aggregation Maximum sedimentation of RL was observed at protein concentrations ≤3% because of a higher density difference between the precipitate and serum phase. SDS-PAGE analysis confirmed the sedimentation of PLPs, caseins, and DPs upon isoelectric precipitation at pH ∼4.5, while native whey proteins or undenatured whey proteins remained soluble in the supernatant, unaffected by the pretreatment. To scale up the process, 750 L of fluid WPC34 was acidified and demineralized by UF (volume concentration factor = 1.35) and DF until the permeate solids reached 0.1% (when desired demineralization was achieved), clarified using a pilot-scale desludging clarifier to remove RL, neutralized, ultrafiltered to concentrate the protein, and then spray-dried to produce an experimental WPI (91% protein and 1.8% fat db). In another trial, demineralized UF concentrate was clarified by gravity sedimentation and the supernatant was neutralized, ultrafiltered, and spray-dried to produce a second experimental WPI (91% protein and < 1% fat db). These experimental WPI powders were compared with several commercially available WPI powders to assess functional properties like solubility, heat stability, foamability and foam strength, gelation, and sensory attributes over accelerated storage. Experimental WPI had excellent functional properties, had low turbidity, were highly heat stable and only developed very slight to slight off-flavors upon accelerated storage, their properties were comparable to the WPI manufactured commercially using MF even after accelerated storage.

Neurodegenerative pathologies affecting the posterior segment of the eye, are characterized by being devastating and responsible for the majority of visual dysfunctions worldwide. These diseases are primarily degenerative, progressing chronically, and can inflict gradual harm to the optic nerve, retinal ganglion cells (RGC), photoreceptors, and other retinal cells. This retinal damage leads to a progressive loss of vision, marking these conditions as a significant health concern worldwide. The intravitreal administration of the phytochemical Carvacrol (CAR) is expected to demonstrate a neuroprotective and antiapoptotic effect on retinal cells, with a specific focus on RGC. This effect will be observed in a retinal degeneration model (RDM) in rabbits induced by cytotoxic and oxidative agents, namely glutamate (GLUT) and L-buthionine-S, R-sulfoximine (BSO). An in vivo study was conducted using New Zealand rabbits in which retinal damage was created to evaluate the effectiveness of CAR. The effectiveness of CAR on the functionality of retinal neuronal cells in RDM was evaluated using pupillary light reflection (PLR). Furthermore, the phytotherapeutic's influence on cell viability was determined through flow cytometry analysis. Finally, the neuroprotective and antiapoptotic capabilities of CAR were specifically scrutinized in RGC through histological studies, quantifying cell survival, and employing immunohistochemical assays to detect the apoptotic index (%) using the TUNEL technique. Our results demonstrated that CAR promoted the recovery of the pupillary contraction profile over time, maintaining the functionality of retinal cells as healthy controls. Additionally, it showed increased cell viability under oxidative and cytotoxic conditions given by GLUT-BSO agents. Finally, we found that CAR protects the survival of RGC and decreases the percentage of apoptotic cells when compared to RDM. CAR demonstrated to have positive effects on the functionality of photoreceptive nerve cells by restoring pupillary contraction. Likewise, it was shown to have neuroprotective and antiapoptotic effects when evaluated in a general and specific way on retinal nerve cells.
