RESUMO

Feeding behavior analysis provides information about the relationships between animals and pastures. Therefore, this review aims to describe some aspects of the feeding behavior profiles of both sheep and goats in grazing systems. The structure of the pasture is a key factor in the feeding behavior of grazing animals. The amount of feed consumed in a given period of time is affected by the number of meals, duration and velocity of swallowing, changes in grazing time, bite rate, bite weight, and quality of ingested forage. The different phenological stages of forage also influence the animals’ strategies to optimize their intake, which consequently changes their behavioral activities. Sheep and goats tend to be more selective than cattle, and young animals are more selective than older animals; this selectivity characteristicis one of the most important aspects to be observed in pasture management. According to the degree of selectivity, the animals will intake forages of higher or lower nutritive quality. In addition, the intensity and distribution of their daily activities (grazing, ruminating, and resting)are influenced by several factors, such as the availability and nutritive value of the pasture, its management, the animal activity in the group, and the predominant climatic conditions of the region.

An understanding of the processes involved in grazing behaviour is a prerequisite for the design of efficient grassland management systems. The purpose of managing the grazing process is to identify sward structures that can maximize animal forage daily intake and optimize grazing time. Our aim was to evaluate the effect of different grazing management strategies on foraging behaviour and herbage intake by sheep grazing Italian ryegrass under rotational stocking. The experiment was carried out in 2015 in southern Brazil. The experimental design was a randomized complete block with two grazing management strategies and four replicates. The grazing management treatments were a traditional rotational stocking (RT), with pre- and post-grazing sward heights of 25 and 5 cm, respectively, and a 'Rotatinuous' stocking (RN) with pre- and post-grazing sward heights of 18 and 11 cm, respectively. Male sheep with an average live weight of 32 ± 2.3 kg were used. As intended, the pre- and post-grazing sward heights were according to the treatments. The pre-grazing leaf/stem ratio of the Italian ryegrass pasture did not differ between treatments (P > 0.05) (~2.87), but the post-grazing leaf/stem ratio was greater (P < 0.001) in the RN than in the RT treatment (1.59 and 0.76, respectively). The percentage of the non-grazed area was greater (P < 0.01) in post-grazing for RN compared with RT treatment, with an average of 29.7% and 3.49%, respectively. Herbage nutritive value was greater for the RN than for the RT treatment, with greater CP and lower ADF and NDF contents. The total time spent grazing, ruminating and resting did not differ between treatments (P > 0.05), with averages of 439, 167 and 85 min, respectively. The bite rate, feeding stations per min and steps per min by sheep were greater (P < 0.05) in the RN than in the RT treatment. The grazing time per hour and the bite rate were greater (P < 0.05) in the afternoon than in the morning in both treatments. The daily herbage intake by sheep grazing Italian ryegrass was greater (P < 0.05) in the RN than in the RT treatment (843.7 and 707.8 g organic matter/sheep, respectively). Our study supports the idea that even though the grazing time was not affected by the grazing management strategies when the animal behaviour responses drive management targets, such as in 'Rotatinuous' stocking, the sheep herbage intake is maximized, and the grazing time is optimized.

The functional response (i.e. the relationship between consumers' intake rate and resource density) is central in plant-herbivore interactions. Its shape and the biological processes leading to it have significant implications for both foraging theory and ecology of grazing systems. A type IV functional response (i.e. dome-shaped relationship) of short-term intake rate of dry matter (intake while grazing) has rarely been reported for large herbivores and the conditions that can lead to it are poorly understood. We report a type IV functional response observed in heifers grazing monocultures of Cynodon sp. and Avena strigosa. The mechanisms and consequences of this type of functional response for grazed system dynamics are discussed. Intake rate was higher at intermediate than at short or tall sward heights in both grass species. The type IV functional response resulted from changes in bite mass instead of a longer time needed to encounter and process bites. Thus, the decrease of intake rate of dry matter in tall swards is not explained by a shift from process 3 (potential bites are concentrated and apparent) to process 2 (potential bites are apparent but dispersed, Spalinger & Hobbs 1992). Bite mass was smaller in tall than in intermediate swards due to a reduction of bite volume possibly caused by the greater proportion of stem and sheath acting as a physical barrier to bite formation. It is generally accepted that potential bites are abundant and apparent in most grassland and meadow systems, as they were in the present experiments. Therefore, a type IV response of intake rate not directly related to digestive constraints may determine the dynamics of intake and defoliation under a much larger set of conditions than previously thought. These results have implications for foraging theory and stability of grazing systems. For example, if animals prefer patches of intermediate stature that yield the highest intake rate, grazing should lead to the widely observed bimodal distribution of plant mass per unit area, even when tall patches are not of significantly lower digestive quality than the pasture average.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the forage-intake process of goats feeding on Massai grass pastures with different heights (40, 50, 60, and 70 cm). The experimental design was completely randomized, with treatments corresponding to four sward heights with two replicates over time and space. Collected data were related to the forage-intake process and the chemical and morphological composition of the pasture. Grazing trials (45 min) were performed with four Anglo-Nubian crossbred goats. Total forage mass intake, bite mass, and intake rate were expressed in relation to animal weight. Pasture density, forage mass, and leaf blade increased as forage height increased. The chemical composition of forage at the evaluated heights was similar, except for reduced crude protein content at 70-cm height. Bite rate, intake rate, and time per bite had a quadratic relationship with increasing sward height. The greatest intake rate was observed at 54.7 cm of height, with 0.136 g DM min-1 kg-1 LW. Bite rate exhibited a linear and positive correlation with increase in intake. At the 50-cm height, goats harvested a mass of 3.65 g DM bite-1 kg-1 LW, when they performed 34.5 bites per minute. Adult goats had a greater forage intake on 50-cm high Massai grass pastures because they could obtain a greater bite mass in a shorter time per bite.


Objetivou-se avaliar os processos de ingestão de forragem por caprinos em pastagem com capim-Massai manejado sob diferentes alturas (40, 50, 60 e 70 cm). O delineamento adotado foi o inteiramente casualizado. Os tratamentos corresponderam a quatro alturas do dossel com duas repetições no tempo e no espaço. Os dados coletados foram relacionados aos processos de ingestão de forragem e composição química e morfológica do pasto. Foram realizados testes de pastejo de 45 minutos com quatro cabras mestiças da raça Anglonubiana. A massa de forragem total consumida, massa de bocados e a taxa de ingestão foram expressos em relação ao peso dos animais. Com o incremento da altura da forragem houve aumento na densidade do pasto, massa de forragem e lâmina foliar. A composição química da forragem nas alturas avaliadas foi semelhante, com exceção da redução do teor de proteína bruta aos 70 cm. A taxa de bocado, taxa de ingestão e tempo por bocado apresentou relação quadrática com o aumento da altura. A maior taxa de ingestão foi observada aos 54,7 cm de altura, com 0,136 g MS min-1 kg-1 de PC. A massa de bocado apresentou relação linear e positiva com o aumento da altura. Aos 50 cm as cabras colheram uma massa de 3,65 g MS bocado-1 kg-1 PC, quando realizavam 34,5 bocados por minuto. No pasto de capim-massai aos 50 cm ocorre maior consumo de forragem por cabras adultas, pois os animais conseguem obter uma massa maior do bocado em menor tempo por bocado.

Liquid sugar baits are well accepted by the Argentine ant Linepithema humile and are suitable for the chemical control of this invasive species. We evaluated how sugar concentrations affect the foraging behavior of L. humile individuals. We quantified feeding variables for individual foragers (ingested load, feeding time and solution intake rate) when feeding on sucrose solutions of different concentrations, as well as post-feeding interactions with nestmates. Solutions of intermediate sucrose concentrations (10-30%) were the most consumed and had the highest intake rates, whereas solutions of high sucrose concentrations (60 and 70%) resulted in extended feeding times, low intake rates and ants having smaller crop loads. In terms of post-feeding interactions, individuals fed solutions of intermediate sucrose concentrations (20%) had the highest probability of conducting trophallaxis and the smallest latency to drop exposure (i.e. lowest time delay). Trophallaxis duration increased with increasing sucrose concentrations. Behavioral motor displays, including contacts with head jerking and walking with a gaster waggle, were lowest for individuals that ingested the more dilute sucrose solution (5%). These behaviors have been previously suggested to act as a communication channel for the activation and/or recruitment of nestmates. We show here that sucrose concentration affects feeding dynamics and modulates decision making related to individual behavior and social interactions of foragers. Our results indicate that intermediate sucrose concentrations (ca. 20%), appear to be most appropriate for toxic baits because they promote rapid foraging cycles, a high crop load per individual, and a high degree of stimulation for recruitment.

Extremely long proboscides are rare among butterflies outside of the Hesperiidae, yet representatives of several genera of skipper butterflies possess proboscides longer than 50 mm. Although extremely elongated mouthparts can be regarded as advantageous adaptations to gain access to nectar in deep-tubed flowers, the scarcity of long-proboscid butterflies is a phenomenon that has not been adequately accounted for. So far, the scarceness was explained by functional costs arising from increased flower handling times caused by decelerated nectar intake rates. However, insects can compensate for the negative influence of a long proboscis through changes in the morphological configuration of the feeding apparatus. Here, we measured nectar intake rates in 34 species representing 21 Hesperiidae genera from a Costa Rican lowland rainforest area to explore the impact of proboscis length, cross-sectional area of the food canal and body size on intake rate. Long-proboscid skippers did not suffer from reduced intake rates due to their large body size and enlarged food canals. In addition, video analyses of the flower-visiting behaviour revealed that suction times increased with proboscis length, suggesting that long-proboscid skippers drink a larger amount of nectar from deep-tubed flowers. Despite these advantages, we showed that functional costs of exaggerated mouthparts exist in terms of longer manipulation times per flower. Finally, we discuss the significance of scaling relationships on the foraging efficiency of butterflies and why some skipper taxa, in particular, have evolved extremely long proboscides.

Avaliaram-se os efeitos da estratégia de pastoreio rotacionado sobre a dinâmica do rebaixamento do milheto (Pennisetum glaucum (L.) R. Br.) pastejado por vacas leiteiras. Os tratamentos consistiram de um fatorial entre duas alturas pré-pastejo, 60 e 40cm, e duas pós-pastejo, 20 e 10cm, alocados em um delineamento em blocos ao acaso com quatro repetições. A estrutura do pasto foi avaliada durante o processo de pastejo a cada 10 minutos, por meio de medições de altura. A taxa de rebaixamento da altura do pasto no tratamento 40-20 apresentou-se relativamente constante ao longo de todo o rebaixamento. O tratamento 60-10 apresentou o maior declínio na taxa de rebaixamento. A taxa de rebaixamento no tratamento 40-10 diminuiu em ritmo mais lento em relação à dos tratamentos com 60cm de altura pré-pastejo. As maiores taxas de ingestão foram observadas nos tratamentos de altura pré-pastejo de 60cm, e considerou-se como a melhor estratégia de manejo a combinação 60-20cm de altura do pasto.(AU)

Foram estudadas as características do processo de ingestão de forragem por cordeiras em azevém (Lolium multiflorum Lam.) nos estádios fenológicos vegetativo, pré-florescimento e florescimento, por meio de testes de pastejo e da técnica da dupla pesagem. O delineamento experimental foi o inteiramente ao acaso, com três tratamentos e cinco repetições no estádio vegetativo e seis nos demais estádios. Os diferentes estádios fenológicos não influenciam a taxa de ingestão, a massa do bocado e a profundidade de bocado quando a oferta de forragem não é limitante ao consumo. O aumento na taxa de bocados é o mecanismo utilizado por cordeiras para manter a taxa de ingestão constante. Os modelos de regressão múltipla indicam que, dentre os atributos do pasto, sua altura é o de maior importância para determinar mudanças no comportamento ingestivo de cordeiras.


Utilizing grazing tests and the double weighing technique, the characteristics of the forage intake process of lambs grazing Italian Ryegrass pasture at vegetative, pre-flowering and flowering phenological stages were studied. A completely randomized design with three treatments and five replicates in the vegetative stage and six replicates in the other phenological stages was used. The intake rate, bite mass and bite depth were not influenced by the phenological stages when the intake was not limited by the forage allowance. By increasing bite rate lambs maintained a constant rate of intake. The multiple regression models indicate that among the herbage attributes, the sward height is the most important to determine changes in the grazing behavior of lambs on Italian Ryegrass pasture.
