RESUMO

Background: The prevalence of scoliosis in Korean elementary school students is increasing, leading to various physical and psychological problems. This study aimed to investigate the association between low body weight and scoliosis among Korean elementary school students. Methods: This was a cross-sectional analysis. Participants were 1062 elementary school students in the metropolitan areas of Korea. Participants were evaluated for scoliosis based on body composition, including weight and height, and with spine structure analysis equipment. Scoliosis diagnosis was defined as having a Cobb's angle greater than 10°. Results: Participants were divided into Normal Weight (NW), Underweight (UW), and Severely Underweight (SUW) groups. Results show that the UW and SUW groups had significantly higher risks of developing scoliosis (odds ratio (OR): 1.43, 95% CI (confidence interval): 1.07⁻1.90; OR: 1.45, 95% CI: 1.02⁻2.05) compared to the NW group; after controlling for age and gender, the OR were 1.44 (95% CI: 1.08⁻1.92) and 1.46 (95% CI: 1.01⁻2.09), respectively. Conclusions: Low weight and the risk of developing scoliosis are very closely associated. Maintenance of appropriate and normal weight in Korean elementary school students appears to be a very effective method for preventing and reducing the risk of scoliosis.

OBJECTIVE: This study evaluated the occurrence and associated factors with self-reported suicidal ideation within the last 12 months among Korean elementary school students. METHODS: In a school-based cross-sectional survey, a total of 657 students were recruited from elementary schools (age range: 11??2 years) in Jeju area. They filled out self-completing questionnaires on suicidality (suicidal ideation and suicidal attempt), depression (Kovacs' Children's Depression Inventory), and sociodemographic characteristics, including school and family factors. RESULTS: A total of 192 (29.2%) students reported suicidal ideation, and the rate of suicidal attempt was 6.1% (n=40). Logistic regression analysis identified factors associated with recent suicidal ideation. Female had higher rates of suicidal ideation than male [odds ratio (OR)=1.81, p=0.005], and students with depression (OR=3.23, p<0.001) and experience of abuse in the home (OR=6.77, p<0.001) were at high risk for suicidal ideation. CONCLUSION: These results suggest that suicidal ideation and actions are relatively common in Korean elementary school students, and have implications for prevention and intervention.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence of spinal deformities such as scoliosis, thoracic kyphosis and lumbar lordosis in Korean elementary school students. METHOD: Five hundred forty Korean elementary school students were preliminary screened for spinal deformities by physical examinations and the three dimensional skeletal analysis system. The study time and pain regions were investigated in sitting on chairs that commonly used in Korean elementary school. RESULTS: The prevalence of scoliosis, thoracic kyphosis and lumbar lordosis were 9.8%, 18.7% and 23.1%. There was a significant difference in study time between spinal deformity group and control group (p<0.01). In spinal deformity group, pain regions were low back (45%), posterior neck (23%), buttock (21%) and shoulder and elbow joints (11%). CONCLUSION: The spinal deformities showed high prevalence in elementary school students assessed by the three dimensional skeletal system analyser. The long term follow-up evaluation and confirmative radiographic study will be necessary to assess curve progression in spinal deformity group.
