RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Metadata describe and provide context for other data, playing a pivotal role in enabling findability, accessibility, interoperability, and reusability (FAIR) data principles. By providing comprehensive and machine-readable descriptions of digital resources, metadata empower both machines and human users to seamlessly discover, access, integrate, and reuse data or content across diverse platforms and applications. However, the limited accessibility and machine-interpretability of existing metadata for population health data hinder effective data discovery and reuse. OBJECTIVE: To address these challenges, we propose a comprehensive framework using standardized formats, vocabularies, and protocols to render population health data machine-readable, significantly enhancing their FAIRness and enabling seamless discovery, access, and integration across diverse platforms and research applications. METHODS: The framework implements a 3-stage approach. The first stage is Data Documentation Initiative (DDI) integration, which involves leveraging the DDI Codebook metadata and documentation of detailed information for data and associated assets, while ensuring transparency and comprehensiveness. The second stage is Observational Medical Outcomes Partnership (OMOP) Common Data Model (CDM) standardization. In this stage, the data are harmonized and standardized into the OMOP CDM, facilitating unified analysis across heterogeneous data sets. The third stage involves the integration of Schema.org and JavaScript Object Notation for Linked Data (JSON-LD), in which machine-readable metadata are generated using Schema.org entities and embedded within the data using JSON-LD, boosting discoverability and comprehension for both machines and human users. We demonstrated the implementation of these 3 stages using the Integrated Disease Surveillance and Response (IDSR) data from Malawi and Kenya. RESULTS: The implementation of our framework significantly enhanced the FAIRness of population health data, resulting in improved discoverability through seamless integration with platforms such as Google Dataset Search. The adoption of standardized formats and protocols streamlined data accessibility and integration across various research environments, fostering collaboration and knowledge sharing. Additionally, the use of machine-interpretable metadata empowered researchers to efficiently reuse data for targeted analyses and insights, thereby maximizing the overall value of population health resources. The JSON-LD codes are accessible via a GitHub repository and the HTML code integrated with JSON-LD is available on the Implementation Network for Sharing Population Information from Research Entities website. CONCLUSIONS: The adoption of machine-readable metadata standards is essential for ensuring the FAIRness of population health data. By embracing these standards, organizations can enhance diverse resource visibility, accessibility, and utility, leading to a broader impact, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. Machine-readable metadata can accelerate research, improve health care decision-making, and ultimately promote better health outcomes for populations worldwide.

The presence of horizontal pleiotropy in Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis has long been a concern due to its potential to induce substantial bias. In recent years, many robust MR methods have been proposed to address this by relaxing the 'no horizontal pleiotropy' assumption. Here, we propose a novel two-stage framework called CMR, which integrates a conditional analysis of multiple genetic variants to remove pleiotropy induced by linkage disequilibrium, followed by the application of robust MR methods to model the conditional genetic effect estimates. We demonstrate how the conditional analysis can reduce horizontal pleiotropy and improve the performance of existing MR methods. Extensive simulation studies covering a wide range of scenarios of horizontal pleiotropy showcased the superior performance of the proposed CMR framework over the standard MR framework in which marginal genetic effects are modeled. Moreover, the application of CMR in a negative control outcome analysis and investigation into the causal role of body mass index across various diseases highlighted its potential to deliver more reliable results in real-world applications.

Pulmonary hypertension (PH) is not considered a known risk factor for non-tuberculous mycobacterial lung disease (NTM-LD), despite that many studies state that incidence is almost equal to other chronic lung diseases. Current standard of care for NTM-LD consists in multidrug antibiotic regimen for several months. However, it results in negative culture conversion in a minority of cases. Therefore, when feasible an adjuvant surgical approach is indicated. In this case report we highlight the importance of multidisciplinary team discussion in providing the best therapeutic strategy in presence of significant comorbidities like chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension.

Background: Approximately 86% of patients with spinal dural arteriovenous fistulas (SDVAFs) exhibit clinical improvement after surgery. However, 12%-55.8% of these patients experience late deterioration (LD) after an initial period of improvement. The risk factors for LD remain unclear. The aim of this study was to explore the risk factors for LD in SDVAF patients. Methods: The clinical data of patients who were admitted to two tertiary hospitals between June 2014 and May 2022 were reviewed. Patients were divided into two groups: the LD group and the no LD group. The severity of neurological dysfunction (NDF) was evaluated using the Modified Aminoff and Logue Scale. Univariable and multivariable Cox regression analyses were performed. Results: A total of 105 eligible patients were enrolled, with a mean age of 57.55 ± 9.42 years. The LD group comprised 37 individuals, while the no LD group consisted of 68 individuals. According to the univariable analysis, preoperative NDF severity and treatment strategy were associated with the risk of LD. According to the multivariable analysis, patients who underwent microsurgery (MS) had a lower risk of LD than did those who underwent endovascular treatment (EVT; HR 0.197, 95% CI 0.085-0.457), and patients with severe NDF had a higher risk of LD than did those with mild NDF (HR 3.604, 95% CI 1.226-10.588), whereas the risk of LD in patients with moderate NDF was similar to that of patients with mild NDF (HR 1.352, 95% CI 0.519-3.524). Conclusion: EVT and severe preoperative NDF are independent risk factors for LD.

Heterosigma akashiwo is a harmful algal bloom species that causes significant detrimental effects on marine ecosystems worldwide. The algicidal bacterium Pseudalteromonas sp. LD-B1 has demonstrated potential effectiveness in mitigating these blooms. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying LD-B1's inhibitory effects on H. akashiwo remain poorly understood. In this study, we employed the comprehensive methodology, including morphological observation, assessment of photosynthetic efficiency (Fv/Fm), and transcriptomic analysis, to investigate the response of H. akashiwo to LD-B1. Exposure to LD-B1 resulted in a rapid decline of H. akashiwo's Fv/Fm ratio, with cells transitioning to a rounded shape within 2 hours, subsequently undergoing structural collapse and cytoplasmic leakage. Transcriptomic data revealed sustained downregulation of photosynthetic genes, indicating impaired functionality of the photosynthetic system. Additionally, genes related to the respiratory electron transfer chain and antioxidant defenses were consistently downregulated, suggesting prolonged oxidative stress beyond the cellular antioxidative capacity. Notably, upregulation of autophagy-related genes was observed, indicating autophagic responses in the algal cells. This study elucidates the molecular basis of LD-B1's algicidal effects on H. akashiwo, advancing our understanding of algicidal mechanisms and contributing to the development of effective strategies for controlling harmful algal blooms.

BACKGROUND: Effective population size (Ne) is a pivotal parameter in population genetics as it can provide information on the rate of inbreeding and the contemporary status of genetic diversity in breeding populations. The population with smaller Ne can lead to faster inbreeding, with little potential for genetic gain making selections ineffective. The importance of Ne has become increasingly recognized in plant breeding, which can help breeders monitor and enhance the genetic variability or redesign their selection protocols. Here, we present the first Ne estimates based on linkage disequilibrium (LD) in the pea genome. RESULTS: We calculated and compared Ne using SNP markers from North Dakota State University (NDSU) modern breeding lines and United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) diversity panel. The extent of LD was highly variable not only between populations but also among different regions and chromosomes of the genome. Overall, NDSU had a higher and longer-range LD than the USDA that could extend up to 500 Kb, with a genome-wide average r2 of 0.57 (vs 0.34), likely due to its lower recombination rates and the selection background. The estimated Ne for the USDA was nearly three-fold higher (Ne = 174) than NDSU (Ne = 64), which can be confounded by a high degree of population structure due to the selfing nature of pea. CONCLUSIONS: Our results provided insights into the genetic diversity of the germplasm studied, which can guide plant breeders to actively monitor Ne in successive cycles of breeding to sustain viability of the breeding efforts in the long term.

Background: Pulmonary involvement in systemic juvenile idiopathic arthritis (SJIA) is a rare but dangerous complication. The main risk factors are already known, such as macrophage activation syndrome, a refractory course of systemic juvenile arthritis, infusion reaction to interleukin 1 and/or interleukin 6 blockers, trisomy 21, and eosinophilia. However, information about respiratory system involvement (RSI) at the onset of SJIA is scarce. Our study aimed to evaluate the specific features of children with SJIA with RSI and their outcomes. Methods: In a single-center retrospective cohort study, we compared the information from the medical records of 200 children with SJIA according to ILAR criteria or SJIA-like disease (probable/possible SJIA) with and without signs of RSI (dyspnea, shortness of breath, pleurisy, acute respiratory distress syndrome, and interstitial lung disease (ILD)) at the disease onset and evaluated their outcomes (remission, development of chronic ILD, clubbing, and pulmonary arterial hypertension). Results: A quarter (25%) of the SJIA patients had signs of the RSI at onset and they more often had rash; hepato- and splenomegaly; heart (pericarditis, myocarditis), central nervous system, and kidney involvement; hemorrhagic syndrome; macrophage activation syndrome (MAS, 44.4% vs. 9.0%, p = 0.0000001); and, rarely, arthritis with fewer active joints, compared to patients without RSI. Five patients (10% from the group having RSI at the onset of SJIA and 2.5% from the whole SJIA cohort) developed fibrosing ILD. All of them had a severe relapsed/chronic course of MAS; 80% of them had a tocilizumab infusion reaction and further switched to canakinumab. Unfortunately, one patient with Down's syndrome had gone. Conclusion: Patients with any signs of RSI at the onset of the SJIA are required to be closely monitored due to the high risk of the following fibrosing ILD development. They required prompt control of MAS, monitoring eosinophilia, and routine checks of night oxygen saturation for the prevention/early detection of chronic ILD.

Fentanyl overdose is a survivable condition that commonly resolves without chronic overt changes in phenotype. While the acute physiological effects of fentanyl overdose, such as opioid-induced respiratory depression (OIRD) and Wooden Chest Syndrome, represent immediate risks of lethality, little is known about longer-term systemic or organ-level impacts for survivors. In this study, we investigated the effects of a single, bolus fentanyl overdose on components of the cardiopulmonary system up to one week post. SKH1 mice were administered subcutaneous fentanyl at the highest non-lethal dose (62 mg/kg), LD10 (110 mg/kg), or LD50 (135 mg/kg), before euthanasia at 40 min, 6 h, 24 h, or 7 d post-exposure. The cerebral cortex, heart, lungs, and plasma were assayed using an immune monitoring 48-plex panel. The results showed significantly dysregulated cytokine, chemokine, and growth factor concentrations compared to time-matched controls, principally in hearts, then lungs and plasma to a lesser extent, for the length of the study, with the cortex largely unaffected. Major significant analytes contributing to variance included eotaxin-1, IL-33, and betacellulin, which were generally downregulated across time. The results of this study suggest that cardiopulmonary toxicity may persist from a single fentanyl overdose and have wide implications for the endurance of the expanding population of survivors.

Purpose: To investigate age-dependent wall to lumen ratio (WLR) reference values for healthy individuals in adaptive optics imaging (AO). WLR serves as an objective, dimensionless parameter for the evaluation of structural changes in vessels caused by conditions like arterial hypertension, diabetes or vascular stenosis. Methods: 50 right eyes of healthy individuals were examined by adaptive optics imaging. The central big arterioles and smaller arterial branches at least one disc diameter away from the optic disc, approximately above or below the macula were measured by the manufacturer's software. The wall-lumen-ratio (WLR), the wall cross-sectional area (WCSA) and lumen diameter (LD) were assessed. Subsequent data analysis was performed with a focus on variables including age, gender and blood pressure. Results: Normative values for WLR, WCSA and LD in 5 different age groups could be established. However, no significant differences between the age groups were found. Intra-subject comparisons revealed significantly higher WLRs on peripheral branches when compared to central arterioles. WLR showed in this normotensive cohort no relevant correlation with the systolic, diastolic and mean blood pressure. Gender and intraocular pressure had no influence on the vascular parameters. Conclusion: AO is capable of examining vascular alterations in arterioles at an almost microscopic level. Age did not seem to alter WLR, normotensive blood pressure parameters showed also no significant impact. AO-based vessel analysis may provide clinically useful biomarkers for cardiovascular health and should be tested in future studies.

Seipin, a crucial protein for cellular lipid droplet (LD) assembly, oligomerizes at the interface between the endoplasmic reticulum and LDs to facilitate neutral lipid packaging. Using proximity labeling, we identified four proteins-Ldo45, Ldo16, Tgl4, and Pln1-that are recruited to the vicinity of yeast seipin, the Sei1-Ldb16 complex, exclusively when seipin function is intact, hence termed seipin accessory factors. Localization studies identified Tgl4 at the endoplasmic reticulum-LD contact site, in contrast to Ldo45, Ldo16, and Pln1 at the LD surface. Cells with compromised seipin function resulted in uneven distribution of these proteins with aberrant LDs, supporting a central role of seipin in orchestrating their association with the LD. Overexpression of any seipin accessory factor causes LD aggregation and affects a subset of LD protein distribution, highlighting the importance of their stoichiometry. Although single factor mutations show minor LD morphology changes, the combined mutations have additive effects. Lastly, we present evidence that seipin accessory factors assemble and interact with seipin in the absence of neutral lipids and undergo dynamical rearrangements during LD formation induction, with Ldo45 acting as a central hub recruiting other factors to interact with the seipin complex.

Light/dark (L/D) cycle plays a crucial role in controlling the production and quality of vegetables. However, the mechanism of L/D cycle on vegetable growth and quality is scarce studied. To investigate the impact of L/D cycle on lettuce growth and quality, we designed three diel scenarios, including 16 hours of light and 8 hours of darkness (L16/D8), 12 hours of light and 6 hours of darkness (L12/D6), and 8 hours of light and 4 hours of darkness (L8/D4). By phenotypic analysis, we found that lettuce grew taller under the L8/D4 scenario than under L16/D8 light cycle scenarios. The physiological indexes showed that the lettuce leaves grown in the L8/D4 scenario exhibited greater enhancements in the levels of soluble protein, soluble sugar, and carotenoid content compared to the other scenarios. By comparing the expression levels under different diel scenarios (L16/D8 vs L12/D6, L16/D8 vs L8/D4, and L12/D6 vs L8/D4), we identified 7,209 differentially expressed genes (DEGs). Additionally, 3 gene modules that were closely related to L/D cycle of lettuce were selected by WGCNA analysis. The eigengenes of three gene modules were enriched in plant hormone signal transduction, sphingolipid metabolism, and nucleocytoplasmic transport pathways. Through network analysis, we identified six hub genes (CIP1, SCL34, ROPGEF1, ACD6, CcmB, and Rps4) in the three gene modules, which were dominant in plant circadian rhythms and greatly affected lettuce growth. qRT-PCR analysis confirmed the diurnal response patterns of the 6 hub genes in different treatments were significant. This study intensively enhanced our comprehension of the L/D cycle in the growth morphology, nutritional quality, and metabolic pathways of lettuce.

BACKGROUND: Latissimus Dorsi (LD) flap is at present among the best techniques for autologous breast reconstruction. A reliable pre-operatory estimation of flap volume would enhance surgical planning, thus improving the aesthetic outcomes of the reconstruction and reducing the need of secondary revision procedures. The study was aimed at providing a simple and reproducible formula to predict LD flap volume pre-operatively. METHODS: 61 patients (66 flaps) who underwent breast reconstruction with LD flap at Policlinico Tor Vergata were prospectively enroled in the study. Anthropometric data and flap measurements were collected pre-operatively. LD flap volume was determined intraoperatively utilising a water displacement technique. A multivariate regression analysis was performed to analyse the collected data and to obtain the mathematical model that most accurately predicts flap volume. RESULTS: The mean actual LD flap volume calculated through water displacement was 213.14 cc (SD 64.56). Performing a multivariate regression analysis BMI and skin paddle width emerged as the most accurate predictors of Latissimus Dorsi flap volume. The mean predicted LD flap volume (LD-V) using the LD-V formula was 213.19 cc (SD 54.59), with a strong Pearson correlation (r = 0.845; R2 =0.715) with the volume calculated through the water displacement technique. CONCLUSIONS: The LD-V formula is an easy and reliable tool for LD flap volume assessment, available as 3.0 WebApp at www.braflap.com, that can be used as a valuable adjunct to surgeon's subjective evaluation to optimise breast reconstruction with the LD flap. Pathogen infection induces massive reprogramming of host primary metabolism. Lipid and fatty acid (FA) metabolism is generally disrupted by pathogens and co-opted for their proliferation. Lipid droplets (LDs) that play important roles in regulating cellular lipid metabolism are utilized by a variety of pathogens in mammalian cells. However, the function of LDs during pathogenic infection in plants remains unknown. We show here that infection by rice black streaked dwarf virus (RBSDV) affects the lipid metabolism of maize, which causes elevated accumulation of C18 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) leading to viral proliferation and symptom development. The overexpression of one of the two novel LD-associated proteins (LDAPs) of maize (ZmLDAP1 and ZmLDAP2) induces LD clustering. The core capsid protein P8 of RBSDV interacts with ZmLDAP2 and prevents its degradation through the ubiquitin-proteasome system mediated by a UBX domain-containing protein, PUX10. In addition, silencing of ZmLDAP2 downregulates the expression of FA desaturase genes in maize, leading to a decrease in C18 PUFAs levels and suppression of RBSDV accumulation. Our findings reveal that plant virus may recruit LDAP to regulate cellular FA metabolism to promote viral multiplication and infection. These results expand the knowledge of LD functions and viral infection mechanisms in plants.

In this study, we investigated the outcomes and factors influencing treatment efficacy in 93 patients with limited disease small cell lung cancer (LD-SCLC), with a median age of 64 years. We focused on the impact of chemotherapy regimens, prophylactic cranial irradiation (PCI), and patient-related variables. The median follow-up for OS was 17.3 months. We observed a statistically significant difference in PFS between LD-SCLC patients treated with cisplatin and etoposide (EP) and those treated with carboplatin and etoposide (CP) (PFS: EP 13.63 months vs. CP 6.54 months, p < 0.01). Patients treated with EP had better overall survival (OS) than CP-treated patients (OS: EP 26.9 months vs. CP 16.16 months, p < 0.01). Concomitant chemotherapy was associated with improved PFS (p = 0.003) and OS (p = 0.002). Patients receiving PCI showed superior OS (p = 0.05) and a trend towards improved PFS (p = 0.057). Female gender was associated with better OS (p = 0.025). Most patients had an ECOG performance status of 0 (71%). This real-world study underscores the importance of multidisciplinary LD-SCLC management, emphasizing the roles of chemotherapy, radiotherapy, and PCI. These findings inform personalized treatment strategies and emphasize the need for prospective trials to validate these results and optimize LD-SCLC treatment.

This study marks the first occasion that Streptococcus iniae has been isolated, identified, and characterized as the causative pathogen in spotted sea bass (Lateolabrax maculates). Infected fish exhibited a range of external symptoms, including scale loss, bleeding from the jaw, anus, and tail, among other signs, as well as internal manifestations such as congested liver, splenomegaly, branchial anemia, yellow fat syndrome, and intestinal edema. Notably, exophthalmia and meningoencephalitis-typical symptoms associated with previous S. iniae infections-were not observed. A predominant bacterial isolate (designated 10S01) was recovered from the pure culture of spleen of a diseased spotted sea bass in Zhuhai, China. The strain was then subjected to Gram staining, biochemical profiling, and molecular confirmation through 16S rRNA and gyrB gene, corroborating its identity as S. iniae. Pathogenicity was assessed by intraperitoneal injection challenge in spotted sea bass weighing approximately 13 g/fish, revealing a LD50 of 74 cfu/g-fish. The 10S01 strain demonstrated the ability to colonize various organs, including the spleen, liver, kidney, and brain, with a relatively higher affinity for the spleen. Furthermore, antimicrobial susceptibility testing indicated that the 10S01 strain was sensitive to 14 tested antibiotics, particularly chloramphenicol, ciprofloxacin, clarithromycin, florfenicol, ofloxacin, rifampicin, and trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole, highlighting these as preferred treatments for S. iniae infections in spotted sea bass. These findings contribute significantly to our understanding of S. iniae pathogenesis and inform the prompt and appropriate antibiotic treatment of S. iniae infections.

The aim of this study was to compare two types of light irradiation devices for antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (aPDT). A 660-nm light-emitting diode (LED) and a 665-nm laser diode (LD) were used for light irradiation, and 0.1 mg/L TONS 504, a cationic chlorin derivative, was used as the photosensitizer. We evaluated the light attenuation along the vertical and horizontal directions, temperature rise following light irradiation, and aPDT efficacy against Staphylococcus aureus under different conditions: TONS 504 only, light irradiation only, and TONS 504 with either LED (30 J/cm2) or LD light irradiation (continuous: 30 J/cm2; pulsed: 20 J/cm2 at 2/3 duty cycle, 10 J/cm2 at 1/3 duty cycle). Both LED and LD light intensities were inversely proportional to the square of the vertical distance from the irradiated area. Along the horizontal distance from the nadir of the light source, the LED light intensity attenuated according to the cosine quadrature law, while the LD light intensity did not attenuate within the measurable range. Following light irradiation, the temperature rise increased as the TONS 504 concentration increased in the order of pulsed LD < continuous LD < LED irradiation. aPDT with light irradiation only or TONS 504 only had no antimicrobial effect, while aPDT with TONS 504 under continuous or pulsed LD light irradiation provided approximately 3 log reduction at 30 J/cm2 and 20 J/cm2 and approximately 2 log reduction at 10 J/cm2. TONS 504-aPDT under pulsed LD light irradiation provided anti-microbial effect without significant temperature rise.

The physical characteristics of brown adipose tissue (BAT) are defined by the presence of multilocular lipid droplets (LD) within the brown adipocytes and a high abundance of iron-containing mitochondria, which give it its characteristic color. Normal mitochondrial function is, in part, regulated by organelle-to-organelle contacts. Particularly, the contact sites that mediate mitochondria-LD interactions are thought to have various physiological roles, such as the synthesis and metabolism of lipids. Aging is associated with mitochondrial dysfunction, and previous studies show that there are changes in mitochondrial structure and proteins that modulate organelle contact sites. However, how mitochondria-LD interactions change with aging has yet to be fully clarified. Therefore, we sought to define age-related changes in LD morphology and mitochondria-lipid interactions in BAT. We examined the three-dimensional morphology of mitochondria and LDs in young (3-month) and aged (2-year) murine BAT using serial block face-scanning electron microscopy and the Amira program for segmentation, analysis, and quantification. Analysis showed reductions in LD volume, area, and perimeter in aged samples compared to young samples. Additionally, we observed changes in LD appearance and type in aged samples compared to young samples. Notably, we found differences in mitochondrial interactions with LDs, which could implicate that these contacts may be important for energetics in aging. Upon further investigation, we also found changes in mitochondrial and cristae structure for mitochondria interacting with LD lipids. Overall, these data define the nature of LD morphology and organelle-organelle contacts during aging and provide insight into LD contact site changes that interconnect biogerontology and mitochondrial functionality, metabolism, and bioactivity in aged BAT.

Mutations in the DDHD2 (DDHD domain containing 2) gene cause autosomal recessive spastic paraplegia type 54 (SPG54), a rare neurodegenerative disorder characterized by the early childhood onset of progressive spastic paraplegia. DDHD2 is reported as the principal brain triacylglycerol (TAG) lipase whose dysfunction causes massive lipid droplet (LD) accumulation in the brains of SPG54 patients. However, the precise functions of DDHD2 in regulating LD catabolism are not yet fully understood. In a recent study, we demonstrate that DDHD2 interacts with multiple members of the Atg8-family proteins (MAP1LC3/LC3s, GABARAPs), which play crucial roles in lipophagy. DDHD2 possesses two LC3-interacting region (LIR) motifs that contribute to its LD-eliminating activity. Moreover, DDHD2 enhances the colocalization between LC3B and LDs to promote lipophagy. LD·ATTEC, a compound that tethers LC3 to LDs to enhance their macroautophagic/autophagic clearance, effectively counteracts DDHD2 deficiency-induced LD accumulation. These findings provide insights into the dual functions of DDHD2 as a TAG lipase and cargo receptor for lipophagy in neuronal LD catabolism, and also suggest a potential therapeutic approach for treating SPG54 patients.

Faba bean is an important legume crop. The genetic diversity among faba bean genotypes is very important for the genetic improvement of target traits. A set of 128 fab bean genotypes that are originally from Egypt were used in this study to investigate the genetic diversity and population structure. The 128 genotypes were genotyped using the Single Primer Enrichment Technology (SPET) by which a set of 6759 SNP markers were generated after filtration. The SNP markers were distributed on all chromosomes with a range extending from 822 (Chr. 6) to 1872 (Chr.1). The SNP markers had wide ranges of polymorphic information content (PIC), gene diversity (GD), and minor allele frequency. The analysis of population structure divided the Egyptian faba bean population into five subpopulations. Considerable genetic distance was found among all genotypes, ranging from 0.1 to 0.4. The highly divergent genotype was highlighted in this study and the genetic distance among genotypes ranged from 0.1 and 0.6. Moreover, the structure of linkage disequilibrium was studied, and the analysis revealed a low level of LD in the Egyptian faba bean population. A slow LD decay at the genomic and chromosomal levels was observed. Interestingly, the distribution of haplotype blocks was presented in each chromosome and the number of haplotype block ranged from 65 (Chr. 4) to 156 (Chr. 1). Migration and genetic drift are the main reasons for the low LD in the Egyptian faba bean population. The results of this study shed light on the possibility of the genetic improvement of faba bean crop in Egypt and conducting genetic association analyses to identify candidate genes associated with target traits (e.g. protein content, grain yield, etc.) in this panel.
