RESUMO

Description According to theatrical superstition, saying "Macbeth" in the theater when you aren't actively performing or rehearsing foreshadows impending doom. In a similar way, in the hospital, its own production of sorts where medical staff is under pressure to perform, it's the "Q" word. We all dread the "Q" word and are vexed with anyone who dares say it. Yet sometimes wandering the hospital during night float, I often feel a profound sense of "Quiet." The word is typically associated with a lack of it, but I find there is a certain peace with being alone with one's thoughts. Residency can be an isolating endeavor, and this particular type of quiet reflection doesn't come around often in a busy hospital. When it does, I think about the other people in this shared space that we work in who may also be feeling the same way, which is bizarrely comforting. However, I probably wouldn't say so out loud, especially under a full moon.

RESUMO

Description The Cârța Monastery, a former Cistercian monastery, is pictured here from one of its sides, conjuring the romanticism that is beloved in medieval ruins. The photo was taken on a sunny fall afternoon in the Țara Fagarașului region of Romania in southern Transylvania. Cârța Monastery was started around 1202 by a group of Cistercian monks from Egres Abbey in the then-kingdom of Hungary. Cistercian architecture is considered some of the most beautiful of the Middle Ages, and walking the grounds of the Monastery indeed evoked a profound sense of gratitude, awe, and peace in the shadow of its beauty that I can call up to this day. Such experiences contribute to our resilience as individuals, and as communities, and reminds us as global members of society that seeking to consistently better ourselves and our planet is a constant evolution.

RESUMO

Description COVID brought its toll of deaths. Something the human race has not experienced in recent times. Something almost unimaginable in the modern world! But having joined a new hospital and moved to a sleepy old town, COVID gave me a sense of solitude I have not experienced for eons. There are times you wonder at the endless ocean in front of you and communicate with your inner soul.

RESUMO

Description As healthcare workers, invested in the wellbeing of our patients while also hoping to grow as individuals, we sometimes tend to view our jobs as a rigid duality-we are either "in love" with our practice and persevere flawlessly through all hardship, or we are "burnt out," coldhearted, and defeated by the heavy workload and expectations of medicine. In reality, we all sit somewhere in the middle of a blurry spectrum, balancing out physical, mental, and emotional pain with the immense honor of saving and cherishing human life, while simultaneously struggling to reconcile our altruistic goals with realistic but necessary human incentives. I want this open-ended work to acknowledge these challenging but critical "and yet" moments, and I hope anyone who is reading it can connect to the words personally and find new insight, regardless of where they are in life.

RESUMO

Representations of disease in Renaissance paintings have been discussed in medical literature, in the context of historical epidemiology, as potential sources of information about the incidence and appearance of particular conditions in earlier times. The present study seeks to show how Renaissance art can also contribute to historical nosology by casting light on the question of whether particular conditions recognized as abnormal today were understood as pathological in the past. The hands of two Renaissance Madonna figures are examined in sculptures produced by Francesco di Simone Ferrucci (1437-1493). Because the Virgin Mary was considered physically perfect by believers, and because Francesco was a successful producer of devotional sculptures for a wide audience, it is highly probable that any abnormal conditions found in the hands of Madonnas sculpted by him would not have been regarded as pathological at the time. The sculptures examined appear to depict camptodactyly and boutonniere deformity in the hands of Madonna figures. These uncommon conditions are also found in Renaissance artworks that show other individuals of high social status, but their presence in the hands of the Madonna gives the strongest indication that they were not considered pathological, due to religious belief in the Virgin's physical perfection. Examination of Madonna figures in late fifteenth century Renaissance art can contribute to historical nosology by identifying abnormal conditions that were not regarded as pathological at the time. The examples of such conditions identified in the present study are camptodactyly and boutonniere deformity.

RESUMO

Description Our colleagues are those on whom we not only rely to help us with patient care and advocacy but also to establish a meaningful and collaborative relationship. The connection between comrades of different departments and specialties facilitates a deep understanding of the intricacies involved in treating a variety of maladies, and we quickly find ourselves ardently discussing our own life struggles, achievements, woes, and joys with those whom we once considered strangers, which only demonstrates the steadfastness of our professional and collegial relationships. However, for a holistic approach to the discipline of healing, the interconnectedness of other subdisciplines needs to be recognized. Therefore, in an attempt to bridge the perceptual disciplinary gaps, the commonalities of approach, and affinities of cultural traditions need to be integrated. In this painting, one can appreciate a central stained-glass pattern that mimics those seen in ancient Persian forts and buildings of old. The medium used is acrylic paint, embellished with glitter and sparkling rhinestones to add an element of elegance and regality. Surrounding the central pattern are intricate and brightly colored South Asian henna designs, which often decorate the palms of individuals celebrating auspicious occasions. This combination of elements reflects how different cultures and backgrounds can intermingle and enhance both the technique as well as the visual beauty of mutual interactions and the awareness of interconnectedness.

RESUMO

Description In this work, Locked Within, I examine my relationship with Western and alternative medicines, exploring how both areas can provide holistic treatment when used together. Seen here through the medium of photography, my illness relates to common experiences in Western medical care. Through images that consider themes of time, choice, faith, the effects of illness, the medical gaze, and health as a commodity, this series provides commentary on medical experiences and the influence of the American healthcare system. With a nod toward scientific documentation, this photographic study documents my journey toward health. The element of typology in my work forms a narrative account of a journey through different medicines to find the ideal state of healthiness. By considering each medicine, I gain a new understanding of myself.

RESUMO

Description The transition from medical neophyte to seasoned physician is a gradual process spanning the course of many years. However, there are various milestones throughout the experience that capture increases in decision-making capacity and responsibility, such as the switch from pre-clinical to clinical medical education. Medical students in their clinical years are endowed with an abundance of knowledge from their pre-clinical years and are just beginning to synthesize and apply that information to patient care. "Ambivalence at 10 000 Feet" captures a reflection of a third-year medical student on the theoretical decision to provide emergency medical care in the absence of other trained medical personnel.

RESUMO

Description On one of the busiest parkways, in the midst of a spring drought, despite the lack of soil a sunflower blooms. This tiny beacon of hope represents the enduring spirit of humanity managing to struggle through this recent global pandemic. For me as a program director, it conjures to mind my graduating family medicine residents. Due to COVID-19, they had to pull extra shifts in the hospital, flip patients in the ICU, and witnessed death on an unprecedented scale. Despite this adversity, they continue to grow professionally, thrive individually, and show the world their sunny smiling faces.

RESUMO

This chapter describes an innovative approach to the cross-disciplinary study of anatomy and art to facilitate visualization of the human body. We draw upon the literature, together with our own experience of designing, delivering and researching a cross-disciplinary art and anatomy course, to indicate the critical elements of the approach that foster students' visualization of the anatomy of the human body.Visual arts have been linked with anatomy for centuries, but typically biomedical science has existed in a utilitarian relationship with art only used as an aid. In this chapter, we discuss the rationale underpinning a cross-disciplinary anatomy and art course and describe our experience of devising activities and assessment that create a stimulating and mutually beneficial environment for visualizing the experience and physicality of the human body. We describe the structure of the course which integrates art and anatomy to train students in the language of anatomy and visual representation, by engaging them in a process of attempting their own visual communication. The cross-disciplinary nature of our approach creates a unique social environment that offers a supportive environment for exploration and experimentation without fear of failure. Students' personal growth in resilience, tolerance for uncertainty and creativity prepares them for the inclusion of these values in their career.

RESUMO

As a medical student, engagement with the medical humanities allowed me to express myself, reflect on experiences, and share my inner thoughts and feelings. Drawing has played a critical role in my life both casually and professionally. It has helped me study anatomy and how the human body works, connect with others, and find a collaborative community. From scrutinising over detailed Netter anatomical drawings to creating my own graphic medicine pieces, the arts and humanities bolster my medical education to become a more well-rounded and competent physician for my future patients.

RESUMO

Description Before embarking on a busy workday, take a moment to appreciate the sunrise. Living near the beach is a privilege that reminds me that you can find the calm necessary to face the demands of your role as a division research director through a few minutes of meditation during your commute. The footprints in the sand symbolize the work accomplished with residents, faculty, and staff the previous day. The pier represents the strength of remaining stable even amidst turbulent waves, which symbolize the ever-changing requests and priorities. The rising sun embodies self-energy and excitement for another day, knowing that "above all else, we are committed to the care and improvement of human life," which makes it all worthwhile. Take a deep breath in and exhale.

RESUMO

Background: During epidemic disease outbreaks, people’s daily lives are restricted by quarantine and social distancing measures that can affect not only their physical and mental health but also other aspects of their lives, including education. The quality of medical education has suffered amid the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, with on-site classes and conferences canceled or postponed. To address the resultant gaps in learning and supplement the rigors of formal medical teaching, recent research has suggested the use of nonfictional films. However, research on the educational and therapeutic value of fictional films is currently lacking. Methods: This study explored fiction films featuring medical practices, diseases, and treatments. The researcher conducted multiple searches using the largest internet movie databases (Internet Movie Database (IMDb), the American Film Institute Catalog, and the British Film Institute’s Collections Search) and literature research focusing on studies related to the value of films as visual learning and educational tools and their therapeutic effects on viewers in times of pandemics. Results: The researcher chose a representative selection of 20 films from over 100 years of cinematic history to educate and intellectually challenge practitioners under lockdown and use as a therapeutic tool. This study identified many ways films could be a potent instrument for medical education and a wide range of educational and therapeutic possibilities for use during public health crises. Medical fiction offers a highly entertaining and effective way to expand and improve medical knowledge and practices while respecting pandemic restrictions. The findings expand our knowledge on the value of medical fiction as an educational and therapeutic tool. (AU)

(AU)

RESUMO

Description On June 28, 2021, the incoming residents reported for their first day of orientation at HCA Florida Westside Hospital (HFWH). This GME program is a joint venture and requires the same level of commitment from HCA Florida Northwest Hospital (HFNWH). As a new employee, I was immediately impressed with the residents, leadership, and staff. Everyone was relaxed, excited, attentive, and cooperative. I met people from all over the world, from different religions, and of different sexual orientations. The following day the same group of residents attended orientation at HFNWH and the leadership and staff were equally impressive. I went home feeling energized by this extraordinary residency program where diversity, equity and inclusion were not just words but were embodied in both the residency program, and both hospitals. I created "Building HCA Bridges" as an abstract expression with feelings, movement, textures, and symbolic colors. When I stepped back, I realized that the painting was missing something. The next day, I spoke with the GME and hospital leadership and with their support, the painting was subsequently passed throughout both hospitals, and everyone was invited to sign. This small gesture created a sense of community, pride, and validation for all who participated in creating this incredible residency program and ultimately, unique piece of artwork. I am submitting the traveling painting, "Building HCA Bridges" on behalf of the inaugural GME programs at HFWH and HFNWH and for those who support the programs every day. We are blessed.

RESUMO

Description This poem explores the experience of being an Asian American care provider and civilian, growing up and trying to mesh together culture with "fitting in" and suffering racism from other individuals and patients. It was inspired by the March 16, 2021, shootings in Atlanta and discusses the origin of hatred and racism/xenophobia. What I hope this conveys is a glimpse into the shared perspectives of many Asian American and Pacific Islanders and describes the optimism moving forward as we begin to tackle these issues.
