RESUMO

Stegosaurs are a minor but iconic clade of ornithischian dinosaurs, yet due to a poor fossil record, their early evolution is poorly understood. Here, we describe a new stegosaur, Baiyinosaurus baojiensis, gen. et sp. nov. from the Middle Jurassic Wangjiashan Formation of the Pingchuan District, Baiyin City, Gansu Province, China. The frontal of Baiyinosaurus possesses a unique characteristic among Stegosauria: it is wider than long and contributes to both the medial and anterior margins of the supratemporal fenestra. The character combinations of dorsal vertebrae of Baiyinosaurus are also different to other stegosaurs: its neural arches are not greatly elongated, its parapophyses are well developed, and its neural spines are axially expanded in lateral. The features of the frontal and vertebrae of Baiyinosaurus are reminiscent of basally branching thyreophorans, indicating that Baiyinosaurus is transitional in morphology between early thyreophorans and early-diverging stegosaurs. Systematic analysis shows that Baiyinosaurus is an early-diverging stegosaur.

RESUMO

A phylogeny of Cyrtophyllitinae Zeuner, 1935 sensu Gorochov, Jarzembowski & Coram, 2006, based on wing morphology, is presented including all genera. Cyrtophillitinae is found to be paraphyletic. Except for Cyrtophyllites rogeri Oppenheim, 1888, all other species were moved from the subfamily Cyrtophyllitinae (Hagloidea, Haglidae). Consequently, a new subfamily Archaboilinae subfam. nov. was erected and accommodates most of the previous cyrtophillitine taxa, except Cyrtophyllites rogeri. The type genus Archaboilus Martynov, 1937 of the new subfamily was designated; a new genus, Pararchaboilus gen. nov., was erected with the designation of type species Pararchaboilus cretaceus comb. nov. From the Middle Jurassic deposits of China, two new species, Archaboilus ornatus sp. nov. and Vitimoilus gigantus sp. nov., are described.

The Jurassic period was a time of major diversification for Mesozoic marine reptiles, including Ichthyosauria, Plesiosauria and thalattosuchian Crocodylomorpha. The latter originated in the Early Jurassic and thrived during the Late Jurassic. Unfortunately, the Middle Jurassic, a crucial time in their evolution, has a poor fossil record. Here, we document the first evidence of macrophagous/durophagous Machimosaurini-tribe teleosauroid thalattosuchians from the late Bajocian (ca 169 Ma) in the form of three robust tooth crowns with conical blunt shapes and anastomosed pattern of thick enamel ridges towards the apex, associated with the skeleton of a large ichthyosaur lacking preserved tooth crowns. The tooth crowns were found on the posterior section of the lower jaw (left angular), a lacrimal and the axis neural arch of the ichthyosaur. In addition, some of the distal sections of the posterior dorsal ribs of the ichthyosaur skeleton exhibit rounded bite marks and some elongated furrows that fit in size and shape with the Machimosaurini teeth. These marks, together with the absence of healing in the rib bone are interpreted here as the indicators of peri- to post-mortem scavenging by a Machimosaurini teleosauroid after the large ichthyosaur carcass settled on the floor of a shallow ocean.

The Middle Jurassic is an important time period for the evolutionary history of marine reptiles as it represented a transitional phase for many clades. Notably, in ichthyosaurs, many early parvipelvian taxa went extinct. The Middle Jurassic saw the emergence of the derived Ophthalmosauria, ultimately becoming the dominant ichthyosaurian clade by the end of the epoch. Even though this is an important period in the evolutionary history of Ophthalmosauria, our understanding remains limited in terms of morphology and taxonomy due to the scarcity of vertebrate-bearing strata. Here we present a large new ichthyosaur from the Bajocian of Switzerland, represented by an almost complete skull with 3D-preserved bones, the (inter)clavicles and a large portion of the postcranial skeleton. After CT- and surface scanning, we reconstructed the 3D in vivo morphology. Our morphological observations and phylogenetic analyses show that the new taxon named Argovisaurus martafernandezi is nested at the base of the Ophthalmosauria. The holotype and only known specimen of Argovisaurus likely represents an adult individual. Bajocian members of the Ophthalmosauria (Mollesaurus and Argovisaurus) were large-bodied animals, a trait typically associated with the more derived Platypterygiinae. Stratigraphic lithology strongly influences the spatial heterogeneity of soil available selenium (ASe), however, it is often neglected in regional simulation. Therefore, taking the Jiangjin District, where the soil is richer in selenium (Se), as the research area, the changes of soil ASe at different spatial scales have been simulated by combining Geodetector and three popular models (Multiple linear regression (MLR), Random forest (RF) and BP neural network (BPN)). The results showed that modelling with 'Formation' as the spatial scale could reduce the influence of stratum lithology difference on the spatial heterogeneity of soil ASe and improve the model's prediction accuracy. Compared with the MLR (R2 = 0.52, root mean squares error (RMSE) = 13.217 µg kg-1) and BPN (R2 = 0.55, RMSE = 13.79 µg kg-1), the RF (R2 = 0.67, RMSE = 10.85 µg kg-1) exhibited higher R2 and smaller RMSE, and the simulation effect of soil ASe is the best in the Middle Jurassic Shaximiao Formation (J2s). The outcomes of variable importance analysis revealed that soil total selenium (TSe) and soil organic matter (SOM) were the imperative factors for predicting ASe. The scenario simulation prediction showed that in the next 40 years, due to the combined influence of SOM and pH, the content of ASe in soil developed in the J2s would decrease from 40.8 µg kg-1 to 37.8 µg kg-1, a 7.8 percent drop. The main areas of soil ASe loss were in the western farming areas. The ASe content in dry land and paddy fields decreased by 12.0% and 4.9%, respectively. Therefore, long-term agricultural production activities would lead to soil ASe loss. The present results could provide a new scheme for the simulation and prediction of regional soil ASe, which is helpful for scientific planning, utilization of selenium-rich soil resources, and development of regional agricultural economy.

Tigrivia baii gen. et sp. nov. (Coleoptera: Adephaga: Coptoclavidae) is described and named based on a fossil specimen from the Middle Jurassic Daohugou Biota, Nincheng County, Inner Mongolia of China. The fossil is very similar in morphology with the adult Coptoclava longipoda Ping 1928 (Laiyang Formation of Nanligezhuang Village, Laiyang City, Shandong Province, China, Lower Cretaceous, 121 ~ 120 Ma), but differs from C. longipoda by the adjacencies of two procoxae and two mesocoxae. T. baii gen. et sp. nov. differs from Daohugounectes primitinus Wang et al. 2010 by the absence of striae on the elytra and the absence of ventral eyes under the head. The new beetle species shows developed aquatic adaptions, such as specialized raptorial forelegs, and swimming middle and hind legs. Furthermore, it is speculated to lead a similar lifestyle as extant Dytiscoidae, according to the two eyes on the side of head and the absence of spiracles on ventrites. This new fossil expanded our knowledge of the diversity of the Middle Jurassic Coptoclavid beetles in Daohugou Biota and improved our understanding of their paleoecological significance.

Angiosperms are a group of plants with the highest rate of evolution, the largest number of species, the widest distribution and the strongest adaptability. Needless to say, angiosperms are the most important group for the humans. The studies on the origin, evolution and systematics of angiosperms have been the major challenges in plant sciences. However, the origin and early history of angiosperms remains poorly understood and controversial among paleobotanists. Some paleobotanists insist that there were no angiosperms in the pre-Cretaceous age. However, this conclusion is facing increasing challenges from fossil evidence, especially Early Jurassic Nanjinganthus, which is based on over two hundred specimens of fossil flowers. Studying more fossil plants is the only reliable way to elucidate the origin and early evolution of angiosperms. Here, we document a new species of angiosperms, Qingganninginfructus formosa gen. et sp. nov, and provide the first detailed three-dimensional morphology of Qingganninginfructus gen. nov from the Middle Jurassic of Northwest China. A Micro-CT examination shows that the best-preserved fossil infructescence has eleven samaroid fruits, each with a single basal ovule. Since these fossils are distinct in morphology and organization from all organs of known gymnosperms and angiosperms (the latter are defined by their enclosed ovules), we interpret Qingganninginfructus as a new genus of angiosperms including a new species, Q. formosa gen. et sp. nov., and an unspecified species from the Middle Jurassic of Northwest China. The discovery of this new genus of angiosperms from the Middle Jurassic, in addition to the existing records, undermines the "no angiosperms until the Cretaceous" stereotype and updates the perspective on the origin and early history of angiosperms.

Jurassic strata are widely distributed in the eastern part of Tibet Autonomous Region, and have yielded many dinosaur bones. However, none of these specimens has been studied extensively, and some remain unprepared. Here we provide a detailed description of some new sauropod material, including several cervical vertebrae and a nearly complete scapula, recovered from the Middle Jurassic of Chaya County, East Tibet. The cervical vertebrae have short centra that bear ventral midline keels, as in many non-neosauropod sauropods such as Shunosaurus. Moreover, the cervical centra display deep lateral excavations, partitioned by a septum. The scapula has proximal and distal ends that are both expanded as in mamenchisaurids and neosauropods. However, relatively small body size and lack of fusion of neurocentral sutures in the cervical vertebrae suggest that the available material is from a juvenile, and the length of the cervical centra may have increased relative to the size of the rest of the skeleton in later ontogenetic stages. Phylogenetic analysis provides limited evidence that the new Tibetan sauropod specimen belongs to Eusauropoda, being more derived than Shunosaurus, but is basal to Mamenchisauridae. The new material provides important information on the morphological transition between Shunosaurus and mamenchisaurids, and extends the known biogeographic range of early-diverging sauropods in the Middle Jurassic of East Asia.

Macronaria is a clade of gigantic body-sized sauropod dinosaurs widely distributed from the Late Jurassic to the Late Cretaceous globally. However, its origin, early diversification, and dispersal are still controversial. Here, we report a new macronarian Yuzhoulong qurenensis gen. et sp. nov. excavated from the Middle Jurassic (Bathonian) Lower Shaximiao Formation. Yuzhoulong qurenensis bears a unique combination of features, such as two accessory fossae that exist on the posterior surface of dorsal diapophyses of anterior dorsal vertebrae. Results of phylogenetic analyses demonstrate it is one of the earliest-diverging macronarians. This new material represents a Middle Jurassic fossil record of macronarian sauropod worldwide and improves the understanding of the early diversity and dispersal of the Neosauropoda. This discovery further supports that sauropods achieved a more rapid and varied morphological diversity and palaeogeographical dispersal in the Middle Jurassic.

Ischyrodon meriani is an obscure pliosaurid taxon established upon an exceptionally large tooth crown of a probable Callovian (Middle Jurassic) age that originates from Wölflinswil, Canton of Aargau, Switzerland. Despite being known for almost two centuries, the specimen remains poorly researched. Historically, I. meriani has been associated, or even considered conspecific, with Pliosaurus macromerus and Liopleurodon ferox. However, neither of the two hypotheses have been tested through detailed comparisons or using modern quantitative methods. Here, we redescribe the type of Ischyrodon meriani, illustrate it, and compare to teeth of thalassophonean pliosaurids, with special focus on Jurassic representatives of the clade. Multivariate analyses show close similarities to L. ferox but comparable structures to those of I. meriani, including a distinctive pattern of the apicobasal ridges, are also observable in some mid-Cretaceous brachauchenines from the 'Polyptychodon' assemblage of East and South East England. While it is likely that I. meriani represents a Liopleurodon-like taxon, or is indeed conspecific with L. ferox, which would make I. meriani the proper name for the species, any such taxonomic considerations are hindered by the fragmentary nature of the type specimens of both these taxa as well as limited knowledge of the dental variability within and between individual jaws of L. ferox. Currently, I. meriani is best treated as a nomen dubium. Finally, we discuss the potential implications of I. meriani being conspecific with L. ferox, and additionally provide a commentary on the taxonomic status of Liopleurodon.

The results of a comparative analysis of taphofloras of the Early Jurassic and first half of the Middle Jurassic of the Siberian paleofloristic region are considered. For this time interval, a significant similarity in the systematic composition of the taphofloras of Western Siberia and Northern China is revealed. Based on the author's data and the published data, the position of the boundary in the south and southwest of the Siberian paleofloristic region and the boundary between its West Siberian and North China provinces are corrected. The refined systematic composition of paleofloras, the constant presence of numerous remains of leaves of deciduous gymnosperms in the sediments, and the sedimentological features of flora-bearing strata taken together convincingly confirm the fact that the climate throughout the entire Siberian region in the Early Jurassic and first half of the Middle Jurassic was humid with seasonal fluctuations in temperature and humidity. The paleogeographic features of the northeast of the Siberian paleofloristic region are briefly considered.

A new species of Cyrtophyllitinae, Archaboilus polyneurus sp. nov. Gu, Yue & Ren, is described from the Middle Jurassic Jiulongshan Formation, Daohugou Village, Inner Mongolia, China. The species is characterized by its ScA reaching the anterior wing margin at the level of the divergence of M+ CuA, distally branched RP, lengths of free CuA and free M equal, and numerous branches of CuA + CuPaα. A new fossil of Liassophyllum caii Gu & Ren, 2012 is described which increases knowledge of its wing venation and indicates that Liassophyllum should be assigned to the Tuphellidae.

RESUMO

A new fossil genus and species is described from the Middle Jurassic of China. The type of Sinoelcana minuta gen. et sp. nov. has body and legs preserved. It is distinguished from all other elcanids by the unique combination of wing venation and stout ovipositor. The sickle-shaped ovipositor suggests that the new species had a preference for oviposition on plant material. A world key to the genera of Elcanidae is provided based on the wing venation.

The correlation between radon exposure and the increased probability of lung cancer is widely recognized. In Portugal, several efforts have been made to estimate the radon potential in granitic rocks, however, existing knowledge on sedimentary rocks is limited. For this reason, extensive representative sampling was conducted in the well-known Lower and Middle Jurassic of the Lusitanian Basin (Central Portugal) to evaluate the radon potential of latter type of rocks. This paper compares the variability of 226Ra and 222Rn activity, emanation coefficient, and radon production rate in several lithologies deposited on paleoenvironments ranging from distal continental to deep marine. To reach this goal, 190 samples were collected in 16 well-studied outcrop sections. 226Ra and 222Rn activity varies between 2.8-119.6 and 0.1-19.6 Bq/kg, respectively. Higher values are linked to sandstones, fine-grained siliciclastics, marls and black shales. The emanation coefficient is lower in lithologies presenting a low siliciclastic/carbonate ratio, namely in dolostones, dolomitic limestones, limestones and marly limestones, with median values ranging between 6.5 and 9.7%. The distribution of radon production rate in the different lithological groups varies between 1.7 and 241.1 Bq.m-3.h-1, increasing in samples of continental source (sandstones and fine-grained siliciclastics) and proximal marine with major continental influence (dolostones), as well as from marls and black shales associated to deeper marine environments. The variability of the radon potential in sedimentary rocks varies according to lithology but, since the typical organization of these rocks in layers, the dip of these ones in each structural block also contribute to increase the variability.

A new species of Elcanidae (Orthoptera, Elcanoidea), Parelcana pulchmacula sp. nov., is described based on four new specimens from the Middle Jurassic Jiulongshan Formation of northeastern China. The new species differs from all other known Archelcaninae species by its combination of wing-venation characters. This new finding improves our knowledge of variation on wing venation in elcanid insects and constitutes the first record of Elcanidae from the Daohugou fossil bed (Yanliao Biota) of northeastern China.

Neptunidraco ammoniticus is a thalattosuchian crocodylomorph from the Rosso Ammonitico Veronese Formation (RAVF, Middle Jurassic) of northern Italy. Erected from one partial specimen, Neptunidraco is pivotal in reconstructing thalattosuchian evolution, being it the oldest known member of Metriorhynchidae. Two additional RAVF thalattosuchians have been referred to Neptunidraco. A revised diagnosis of N. ammoniticus is provided here. Using a well-sampled phylogenetic data set of Crocodylomorpha, the affinities of all three RAVF thalattosuchian specimens are investigated simultaneously for the first time using parsimony tree-search strategies and Bayesian inference using the Fossilized Birth-Death with Sampled Ancestor (FBDSA) model. The results of the alternative analyses are not consistent in the placement of the RAVF specimens. The holotype of N. ammoniticus is consequently referred to Metriorhynchidae incertae sedis. The first referred specimen is recovered in various alternative placements among Metriorhynchoidea. The third and most fragmentary specimen is recovered as a crocodylomorph of uncertain affinities in the parsimony analysis and in the undated Bayesian analysis, and a metriorhynchoid sister taxon of the second RAVF specimen in the tip-dated Bayesian analysis. Only a subset of the results in the parsimony-based analyses supports the referral of the latter two specimens to Neptunidraco. The unusually high rate of morphological divergence for the Neptunidraco branch, inferred in previous iterations of the Bayesian inference analyses but not recovered in the novel analysis, was likely an artifact of the a priori constraint of all RAVF thalattosuchians into a single taxonomic unit, and of the arbitrarily fixed tip-age priors for the terminal taxa. These results confirm the utility of specimen-level morphological analysis and of combined tree-search strategies for inferring the affinities and the inclusiveness of fragmentary but significant fossil taxa, and reinforce the importance of incorporating stratigraphic uncertainty as prior in tip-dated Bayesian inference analyses.

Four isolated sauropod axial elements from the Oxford Clay Formation (Callovian, Middle Jurassic) of Peterborough, UK, are described. Two associated posterior dorsal vertebrae show a dorsoventrally elongated centrum and short neural arch, and nutrient or pneumatic foramina, most likely belonging to a non-neosauropod eusauropod, but showing ambiguous non-neosauropod eusauropod and neosauropod affinities. An isolated anterior caudal vertebra displays a ventral keel, a 'shoulder' indicating a wing-like transverse process, along with a possible prespinal lamina. This, together with an overall high complexity of the anterior caudal transverse process (ACTP) complex, indicates that this caudal could have belonged to a neosauropod. A second isolated middle-posterior caudal vertebra also shows some diagnostic features, despite the neural spine and neural arch not being preserved and the neurocentral sutures being unfused. The positioning of the neurocentral sutures on the anterior one third of the centrum indicates a middle caudal position, and the presence of faint ventrolateral crests, as well as a rhomboid anterior articulation surface, suggest neosauropod affinities. The presence of possible nutrient foramina are only tentative evidence of a neosauropod origin, as they are also found in Late Jurassic non-neosauropod eusauropods. As the caudals from the two other known sauropods from the Peterborough Oxford Clay, Cetiosauriscus stewarti and an indeterminate non-neosauropod eusauropod, do not show the features seen on either of the new elements described, both isolated caudals indicate a higher sauropod species diversity in the faunal assemblage than previously recognised. An exploratory phylogenetic analysis using characters from all four isolated elements supports a basal neosauropod placement for the anterior caudal, and a diplodocid origin for the middle caudal. The dorsal vertebrae are an unstable OTU, and therefore remain part of an indeterminate eusauropod of uncertain affinities. Together with Cetiosauriscus, and other material assigned to different sauropod groups, this study indicates the presence of a higher sauropod biodiversity in the Oxford Clay Formation than previously recognised. This study shows that it is still beneficial to examine isolated elements, as these may be indicators for higher species richness in deposits that are otherwise poor in terrestrial fauna.

Dapedium is one of the most abundant and diverse genera of ganoid fishes from the Early Jurassic fossil lagerstätte of Europe. In spite of its abundance, however, its timing of extinction is poorly constrained, with the youngest described material being Early Jurassic in age. We describe new diagnostic and relatively complete material of a large species of Dapedium (standard length estimated at 50 cm) from the Middle Jurassic (earliest Aalenian) Opalinuston Formation of Baden-Württemberg, Germany. The Aalenian material represents a distinct species, D. ballei sp. nov., differing from Early Jurassic species in a unique combination of characters pertaining to the shape of the dermal skull elements, pectoral fin position, and scale shape and ornamentation. However, although D. ballei sp. nov. exhibits a unique combination of characters, there are no autapomorphies with which to distinguish it from the Toarcian species of Dapedium. Dapedium ballei represents the geologically youngest species of Dapedium, extending the range of this genus into the Middle Jurassic. The Opalinuston Formation fills an important gap in the marine vertebrate fossil record, and finds from this horizon have the potential to greatly improve our understanding of evolutionary dynamics over this period of faunal transition.

Razanandrongobe sakalavae Maganuco, Dal Sasso & Pasini, 2006 is a large predatory archosaur from the Middle Jurassic (Bathonian) of the Mahajanga Basin, NW Madagascar. It was diagnosed on the basis of teeth and a fragmentary maxilla, but its affinities were uncertain. Here we describe new cranial remains (above all, an almost complete right premaxilla and a caudally incomplete left dentary) that greatly improve our knowledge on this enigmatic species and reveal its anatomy to be crocodylomorph. The right premaxilla indicates that the rostrum was deep, wide, and not pointed; it bears five teeth that are sub-vertical and just slightly curved lingually; the mesial teeth are U-shaped in cross-section and have serrated carinae on the lingual side; the aperturae nasi osseae (external bony nares) are confluent and face rostrally; and there is no lateral groove at the premaxillomaxillary suture for reception of a hypertrophied lower caniniform tooth. The preserved portion of the left dentary has an edentulous tip and bears eight large mandibular teeth of which the mesial (1-3) are the largest, but none is a hypertrophied caniniform tooth; the mandibular (dentary) symphysis extends caudally to the level of the third tooth; the splenial is not preserved, but its sutural marks on the dentary indicate that it contributed to the mandibular symphysis for at least 20% of the symphyseal length in dorsal aspect. On the basis of this new data, some previously uncertain features of the holotype maxilla-such as the margin of the suborbital fenestra, the contact surfaces for the palatine, the ectopterygoid, and the jugal-are now apparent. Testing of the phylogenetic position of the species within Crocodylomorpha indicates that R. sakalavae is a mesoeucrocodylian. It also represents one of the earliest events of exacerbated increase in body size along the evolutionary history of the group. In addition, it is by far the oldest notosuchian. A cranial reconstruction of this gigantic predator is also attempted here. The very robust jaw bones of R. sakalavae, coupled with its peculiar dentition, strongly suggest a diet that included hard tissue such as bone and tendon.

The south Gangdese region is the site of subduction of the Neo-Tethys and subsequent continental collision. Compared with widespread Cretaceous and Cenozoic magmatism, Early-Middle Jurassic magmatic rocks and related deposits are rarely reported. Our work identified a >200km long felsic rock belt associated with Cu mineralization in the south Gangdese region. We report here zircon U-Pb ages, zircon Ce4+/Ce3+ values, and mineral assemblages of two Cu mineralized intrusions within the belt. A hornblende granite and a diorite porphyry were emplaced at 177.3Ma and 166.3Ma, respectively. Geological occurrence and magmatic hematite-magnetite-chalcopyrite intergrowths suggest that Cu mineralization formed coeval with Jurassic intrusions. Mineralized intrusions have high zircon Ce4+/Ce3+ and EuN/EuN∗ ratios, and hematite-magnetite intergrowths, suggesting their parent magmas were highly oxidized. Hornblende is common and primary fluid inclusions are found in titanite and apatite, indicating their parent magmas were water-saturated and exsolved volatile phases at early stage of magmatic evolution. Those magma characters contribute to the formation of porphyry Cu deposits. Given that majority subduction-related porphyry Cu systems have been eroded following uplift and denudation, the well-preserved Early-Middle Jurassic Cu mineralized igneous rocks in south Gangdese are favorable prospecting targets for subduction-related porphyry Cu deposits.
