RESUMO

Managerial coaching may be an effective strategy to reduce role ambiguity among nurses. Although the benefits of coaching relationships have been demonstrated outside of nursing, there is a lack of evidence about this career development relationship in nursing. A cross-sectional design was used to determine the relationship between managerial coaching and role ambiguity among military and civilian nurses who work in the Military Health System (MHS). Nurses who worked at a large academic medical center in San Antonio, Texas were asked to participate by completing a survey to examine the variables of interest. Among the 382 nurses that responded, perceived role ambiguity was low and managerial coaching was seldom perceived from first-line supervisors. However, there was a significant negative relationship between managerial coaching and role ambiguity. This study provides foundational knowledge about the relationship between managerial coaching and role ambiguity for nurses working in the MHS.

RESUMO

The paper examines the introduction of trained female nurses for the British army men in colonial India between 1888 and 1920. It discusses the genesis of the Indian Nursing Service (INS), including the background and negotiations leading up to its formation, terms of employment, duties and working conditions of the nursing sisters. The memoir of Catharine Grace Loch, who served as the first Chief Lady Superintendent of the service is used extensively to trace the early experiences and challenges of the nursing sisters. The paper primarily argues that the INS being a new service, the colonial government maintained tight control over its functioning, and extreme conservatism in spending, thus retarding the growth of professional army nursing in India. Secondly, in examining the relations between the sisters and the (male) nursing orderlies, sub-medical and medical officers, the paper argues that the inadequate delineation of the nursing sisters' position in the military medical hierarchy was an important reason for the undermining of their expertise and status. Thirdly, the paper contends that as an all-women service, nursing constituted an important avenue of female agency within the patriarchal colonial establishment, which subjected the sisters to scrutiny both professionally and socially. The paper analyses the resultant conditions and regulations imposed on the sisters - most of them determined by gender and class notions. Finally, the paper discusses the gradual establishment and recognition of the service as an important cornerstone for the health of the army, while highlighting the shortcomings that yet persisted up until 1920.

This study aimed to understand the occupational stressors perceived by military nurses and their ways of coping. A qualitative research was carried out at a Brazilian Army hospital. Data collection took place from August to October 2019 through an interview by using an electronic recorder. The data were analyzed in a descriptive way, and the hermeneutic-dialectical method was used as a reference based on Betty Neuman's systems theory. Based on the units of signification of the participants' discourses, three categories of analysis were identified: (1)Perceived occupational stressors; (2) Perception of nurses about the repercussions of their work environment in everyday life; and (3) Coping with occupational stressors. The military nurses' perception of occupational stress showed that this scenario consists of stressors typical of the profession, of what it is like to be a nurse and to be in the military. There may be several responses to coping with perceived stress.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: "Crisis military deployment" was defined as a situation in which military personnel are suddenly ordered to duty to support an operation away from their home station and in a potentially dangerous environment. As a result of complex changes in the global political and economic landscape, military nurses are assuming an increasing number of crisis military deployment tasks. Moral distress has been widely studied among civilian nurses. However, little is known about the moral distress military nurses experience during military deployments in crisis. AIM: This review discussed the current state of research on the phenomenon, unique factors, specific sources, and measurement tools. METHODS: The scope of the study was defined using a framework developed by Arksey and O'Malley. Following English databases were searched: PubMed, CINAHL, Cochrane Library, Web of Science, and Embase, using MeSH terms and free word combinations; furthermore, Chinese databases: CNKI and CBMDisc, were explored using thematic terms from inception until January 20, 2023. Data were selected and defined by the inclusion and exclusion criteria and independently screened by two researchers. ETHICAL CONSIDERATIONS: The scoping review adhered to sound scientific practice and respected authorship and reference sources. RESULTS: Finally, 21 articles were included in the review. The moral distress of military nurses in crisis military deployments had unique and specific sources and reported positive aspects. The deployment environment and nature of the mission, responsibilities and obligations of military nurses, and the limited rights of patients were unique factors. Specific sources included third-party intervention, military triage, resource allocation, futile care, care of the enemy, and return to the battlefield. Military nurses in deployment reported positive aspects. They grow in their inner strength, build deep friendships and gain a greater sense of professional value. CONCLUSION: It is important to understand the unique factors and specific sources of moral distress faced by military nurses in crisis military deployments and to identify the positive aspects. This research will help prepare military nurses for future deployments in advance by providing useful information to mitigate and eliminate moral distress.

RESUMO

To date, little is known about the experience of military nurses and post traumatic growth (PTG). An analysis focusing on PTG was performed using data from the surveys and qualitative interviews of military enroute care nurses. In a mixed methods study designed to understand behavioral health symptoms experienced by military enroute care nurses, the qualitative data confirmed the experiences of nurses found in the quantitative data regarding the presence of PTG. Although the mean PTG total score was low in the quantitative findings, the qualitative data supported the presence of important factors comprising PTG. More research is needed to determine the experience of PTG among nurses.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: Aeromedical evacuation missions to transport highly infectious critical COVID-19 patients involve multiple factors, therefore planning is essential in their preparation. The management of specialist nurses is cross-cutting, as they participate in the planning, organisation and implementation of aero-evacuation protocols, delivery of care and operational safety procedures throughout the operation, with an integrated aeromedical crew working as a team alongside the air crew. OBJECTIVE: To study the management of nurses specialised in the aero-evacuation of highly infectious critical patients during the COVID-19 pandemic. DESIGN: Through a systematic search of the biomedical literature, this study was conducted according to the standards of the Cochrane Handbook for Systematic Reviews of Interventions and PRISMA. The literature search included articles published from 2019 to August 2020 and meta-search engines, yielding a total of 142 articles, and a triangulation of information was performed. A total of 11 articles were eventually included in the review, and the validity of each article was determined according to the guidelines of the Joanna Briggs Institute level of evidence. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION: The systematic review identified 11 studies that use different methodological considerations for conducting an aeromedical evacuation and covering key aspects for a successful operation. CONCLUSION: The management of specialist nurses has a direct impact on the aeromedical evacuation of the critical patient. It covers planning, organisation, and operational safety, applied in the instruction, training, execution and strict monitoring of the work of the aeromedical crew as a solid team. This contributes to the success of the aero-evacuation mission and the infectious patient's high likelihood of survival during the COVID-19 pandemic.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The history of critical care nursing is intertwined with that of battlefield nursing, where for almost 200 years, nurses worked to save injured soldiers' lives, risking their own physical and emotional injuries. Today, with nurses increasingly deployed to provide critical care during natural, man-made and public health crises that can resemble battlefield situations, there is much to learn from battlefield nurses. AIM: This qualitative study aims to explore the lessons of the experiences of civilian nurses deployed to Israeli battlefields in three wars between 1967 and 1982. METHODS: Qualitative, semi-structured, in-depth interviews were conducted with twenty-two former military nurses who were deployed in three wars between 1967 and 1982. We analysed interview transcripts using a content analysis approach. COREQ, a 32-item checklist, guided method selection, data analysis and the findings' presentation. FINDINGS: Data analysis revealed three main themes, with ten related subthemes: Field Service Challenges, Coping with Challenges, and Nurses' Need for Recognition. CONCLUSION: The findings identify mental, emotional, and organizational issues resulting from nurses' wartime experiences, revealing numerous opportunities for better preparing and supporting critical care nurses before, during, and after crises. RELEVANCE TO CLINICAL PRACTICE: Critical care nursing during crises, such as wartime, is unique but increasingly common. The memories and ongoing impact of those experiences offer invaluable information for nursing and health policy stakeholders planning for future deployments during wartime or other disasters such as the COVID-19 pandemic and the Russo-Ukrainian war.

RESUMO

ABSTRACT Objectives: to describe the circumstances related to the creation of the Aeronautics Central Hospital and to discuss the alliances formalized between the Brazilian Air Force and the Anna Nery Nursing School, in favor of the Aeronautics Health Service. Method: a historical-social study, whose historical sources are documents located at the Aeronautics Historical-Cultural Institute, the Aerospace Museum, the Central Aeronautics Hospital collection and the Anna Nery Nursing School Documentation Center. The analysis considered unity of the context, that is, it considered the "universe" that influenced the production of the discourse contained in the source, and Pierre Boudieu's concepts of power and symbolic capital were applied in the analysis and discussion. Results: when taken over by the Brazilian government in 1942, the School Hospital had its name changed to Hospital Central da Aeronáutica (Aeronautics Central Hospital). That same year, the hospital director, with the Minister of Aeronautics acquiescence, invited the Anna Nery Nursing School to organize the hospital's Nursing Service. Conclusion: the nurses who graduated from the Anna Nery Nursing School accumulated symbolic capital, as they had their work recognized in the Military field due to their performance in the aforementioned hospital, which served as a reference in their appointment to assume the other health services of the new Armed Force, in addition to highlighting the quality of the training of these nurses, so that they were selected to fight in the war with the rank of 2nd Lieutenants (Officers), exclusively assisting, the military of the elite Fighter Aviation Group.

(AU)

Background: Assistance to the wounded in the combat field creates the need to integrate medicine, military tactics and nursing in a reasoned manner, the latter consisting of the administration of prehospital care, surgical procedures and stabilization of the wounded. Objective: to determine the main functions of the nursing profession in the Spanish Army and Aeronautics between 1855 and 1931. Methods: A bibliographic review of the main scientific databases and search engines, as well as specialized libraries in the history of nursing, has been carried out. The inclusion criteria were: documents that analyzed the functions of military practitioners, nurses; as well as their rank and rank. Results: Starting in 1855 with the organization of the Facultative Scale, the figure of military practitioner ceased to be a figure destined to be a future doctor to incorporate their own functions and responsibilities. The Moroccan War implied that military logistics specialized, creating aircraft for military tactics with the opening of the Cuatro Vientos aerodrome (Madrid) in 1911 and carrying out the first Spanish air evacuation mission in the same Rif War in 1922. It would not be until 1988 when the woman was able to join the Army as a professional soldier. Conclusion: The contributions of the Spanish army and aeronautics to the nursing profession lie mainly in three large fields: the extra-hospital field, the field of general and vascular surgery, and the field of traumatology. RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Research Interest Groups have been used to enhance collaboration within specialty health care areas. PURPOSE: This article was to demonstrate the impact of an organic model created by the TriService Nursing Research Program which became a conduit for collaboration across the three branches of Military Nursing Services to answer relevant research questions and support evidence-based practice. METHODS: Groups were organized around different specialty topics with a focus on education, mentorship, and collaboration. Modest funding, together with the development of an annual plan and report of scholarly activities allowed the groups to capture their impact and to strategically align efforts to support the National Defense Strategy and excellence in Military Nursing. FINDINGS: From 2018 to 2021, overall publications and funded grants for these groups increased each year despite multiple competing priorities. DISCUSSION: TriService Nursing Research Program Research Interest Groups demonstrate a successful, and easily replicable model to generate and disseminate research to inform clinical practice and health policy, both in the public and private sectors.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Several studies have been undertaken regarding civilian and military nurses' training, deployment, and experiences during missions in war and conflict areas. However, no review study regarding the experiences of nurses in serving in war and conflict areas has been published. AIM: This review aims to identify the views, experiences, and support needs of Registered Nurses when caring for patients in war and conflict areas. METHOD: Four electronic databases-MEDLINE, CINAHL, PsycINFO, and general BC PubMed-were searched in this systematic review. Study screening and selection, data extraction, quality appraisal, and narrative synthesis were conducted following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) 2020 checklist. RESULTS: Twenty-five studies were included in the final review. The findings were categorised based on four main themes: Challenges in nursing practice, Meaning of experience, Scope of practice, and Nursing support pre- and post-conflict. CONCLUSIONS: Registered Nurses play a critical role in prehospital care and have a significant impact on the survival of wounded military personnel and civilians and on their mortality. Registered Nurses play important roles in military deployment, with barriers to their successful implementation experienced due to a lack of information at the decision-making level, and the need for psychological supports and role-appropriate medical readiness training. IMPLICATIONS: Registered Nurses who are military-ready need to be effective in war and conflict areas. Using the experiences of military or civilian Registered Nurses to assess the pre-deployment preparation needs of these nurses will be beneficial to the effectiveness of the nursing workforce. There are elements that demand more attention during the pre-deployment preparation phase of nurses required to serve in war and conflict areas.

RESUMO

This study aimed to develop and verify the effect of a new personal protective equipment donning and doffing program for nurses in military hospitals. A total of 40 nurses (20 experimental group, 20 control group) participated in this nonequivalent control group experimental study. The new program consisted of the description of the design modification of the inner and outer boundary marks of coveralls and a video with verbal instructions and footswitch that the participants could watch at their own pace. Data collection was carried out before, immediately after, and 2 weeks after the intervention. The effects of the program on accuracy, self-efficacy, and time were analyzed using a generalized estimating equation. PPE donning and doffing accuracy, self-efficacy, and time were significantly increased in the experimental group compared to those in the control group, both immediately after and 2 weeks after intervention. As this program has been confirmed to be effective in improving PPE donning and doffing accuracy and self-efficacy, we recommend using this program for training nurses on donning and doffing of PPE.
