RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: Prevention programs that address the intersecting health problems of risky alcohol use, unsafe sexual behaviors, and sexual violence are needed. This pilot project assessed the feasibility, acceptability, and preliminary efficacy of a two-session group-based intervention, Sex Positive Lifestyles: Addressing Alcohol & Sexual Health (SPLASH), targeting these highly interconnected risks for college students across genders. METHOD: A total of 217 participants (51.6% male, ages 18-24) took part in the SPLASH intervention or a nutrition/exercise control condition. SPLASH included three approaches aimed at reducing the incidence of alcohol problems, unsafe sex, and sexual victimization: normative feedback to modify misperceptions around peers' drinking, sexual behaviors, and support of bystander intervention; drinking and sexual-related protective behavioral strategy training to enhance safer drinking and sex-risk behaviors; and bystander intervention skills training to promote bystander efficacy and engagement. Participants completed baseline and follow-up (1-month and 6-month) online assessments. RESULTS: SPLASH demonstrated high acceptability and feasibility, as well as preliminary efficacy. SPLASH participants reported strong acceptability of the intervention, particularly its integrated content and interactive, in-person group format. Successful enrollment (70% randomized) and retainment point to the feasibility of recruiting students to this two-session in-person intervention. Results showed sustained trends toward more accurate perceived sex-related norms and indications of increasing bystander norms among intervention but not control participants. CONCLUSIONS: Results demonstrate the potential for SPLASH to effectively address the interrelated health risks of risky alcohol use, unsafe sex, and sexual violence on college campuses and point to the need for larger-scale studies.

Despite research has massively focused on how emotions conveyed by faces are perceived, the perception of emotions' authenticity is a topic that has been surprisingly overlooked. Here, we present the Emotion Authenticity Recognition (EAR) test, a test specifically developed using dynamic stimuli depicting authentic and posed emotions to evaluate the ability of individuals to correctly identify an emotion (emotion recognition index, ER Index) and classify its authenticity (authenticity recognition index (EA Index). The EAR test has been validated on 522 healthy participants and normative values are provided. Correlations with demographic characteristics, empathy and general cognitive status have been obtained revealing that both indices are negatively correlated with age, and positively with education, cognitive status and different facets of empathy. The EAR test offers a new ecological test to assess the ability to detect emotion authenticity that allow to explore the eventual social cognitive deficit even in patients otherwise cognitively intact.

OBJECTIVES: Interest in teleneuropsychology services increased considerably after the COVID-19 pandemic. However, the utility of unsupervised administration of computerized tests remains largely unexplored. In the present study, we developed a brief computerized battery that assesses self-reported cognitive abilities and performances on executive functioning and verbal memory. We investigated the equivalence of the self-administration online (SAO) procedure and the face-to-face (FTF) administration. Preliminary normative data were developed and the acceptance of the SAO procedure was explored. METHODS: A community sample of 169 Greek adults [94 women; mean age: 41.95 (SD = 13.40) years, mean years of education: 15.10 (SD = 2.65)] completed the SAO assessment. A subgroup of 40 participants was tested in a counterbalanced way both with SAO and FTF. Participants' performances were compared with paired sample t-tests and the agreement between the two methods was estimated with intraclass correlation coefficients (ICCs). Multiple linear regression analyses were applied to investigate the effect of demographic characteristics on SAO measures. RESULTS: No difference between SAO and FTF scores was observed. ICCs indicated moderate to good agreement (.418-.848) for most measures. Age was positively associated with self-reported cognitive state and negatively with neuropsychological performances and the level of acceptance of the SAO procedure. Approximately 80% of participants reported satisfaction from the SAO assessment, 69% good compliance with the instructions, but less than 30% belief that the FTF assessment could be adequately replaced. CONCLUSION: SAO testing is feasible and well accepted among Greek adults yielding equivalent results with FTF testing. Despite the wide satisfaction, though, notable reluctance was noted for the substitution of FTF with SAO procedures.

Purpose of the Study: The primary objective was to establish the reference values for liquid gastric emptying and small bowel. The secondary objectives encompassed comparing the anterior view and geometric mean methods, assessing gender differences, and exploring potential correlations with age. Materials and Methods: Thirty-five consecutive healthy participants (28 females and 7 males) with a mean age of 42 ± 11 years (median, 42; range, 23-65) underwent liquid gastric emptying scintigraphy at five intervals (0, 0.5, 1, 2, and 4 h), with optional additional imaging at 24 h. Liquid gastric emptying was evaluated using percent retention and half-time (T1/2). Small-bowel transit was assessed using the index of small-bowel transit (ISBT), calculated as the ratio of terminal ileal reservoir counts to total abdominal counts at 4 h. Reference values were established based on percentiles or mean and standard deviation (SD). Rapid small-bowel transit was determined through visual inspection. Statistical analysis involved paired Samples t-test or Wilcoxon signed-rank test for comparing imaging methods, independent Samples t-test or Mann-Whitney U-test for gender comparison, and Spearman's rank correlation for assessing age-related associations. A 2-tailed P < 0.05 indicated significance. Results: Rapid liquid gastric emptying based on the geometric mean method was defined as percent retention <8% at 30 min, while delayed emptying as percent retention >33%, >20%, and >4% at 1, 2, and 4 h, respectively. The reference range of T1/2 of gastric emptying was 10-60 min. The reference value for small-bowel transit using the geometric mean method was established as ISBT >30% at 4 h, while rapid small-bowel transit was defined as the first visualization of activity in the cecum-ascending colon within 1 h. Parameters for liquid gastric emptying and small-bowel transit were notably higher in the anterior view method compared to the geometric mean method (P ≤ 0.019), except for percent retention at 2 h (P = 0.510). Nevertheless, the obtained reference values, whether based on percentiles or mean and SD, showed no notable variance between the two methods to warrant clinical significance. Gender did not display an impact on liquid gastric emptying or small-bowel transit in either method (P ≥ 0.173), and age demonstrated no significant moderate or strong correlations (Spearman's ρ ≤ 0.397). Conclusion: The study determined reference values for liquid gastric emptying and small-bowel transit through a standard gastric emptying scintigraphy protocol, avoiding additional complex procedures or extended imaging sessions. The established normative data can apply to individuals of both genders aged ≥18 years. While advocating the geometric mean method as the primary choice, the study acknowledges that in busy centers handling multiple studies with limited resources and a single-head gamma camera catering to multiple studies, the anterior view method remains a feasible alternative.

The evaluation of natural ventilation potential for effective sustainable options and innovative green building design strategies is of great interest to architects, researchers and governments. From a retrospective review, we found that the potential evaluation of natural ventilation (NV) cooling effectiveness in the same category based on similar meteorological uncertainty, research objectives and objects showed significant differences. Uncertainties added and uncertainty propagation (both model form uncertainties and parameter uncertainties) could result in large discrepancies between simulation outcomes and real scenarios, especially in the design performance modeling (DPM) phase. In this conceptual design stage, a few parameters are available and therefore decisive. It is necessary to review and identify the key performance indicators and explore the extent to which deviations are caused by inconsistencies or biases in model information. As a basis for more concrete research, we propose statistical tests based on quantitative evaluations to explore the rule of natural ventilation potential volatility and identify whether there is a significant potential improvement resulting from the critical parameter enhancement with the optimal relationship. The showcase is applied in China, where there has been a significant amount of criticism regarding the current building climate zoning due to the perceived coarseness of the system and where there has been an active exploration into the possibility of redefining building climate zoning with a view toward improving its accuracy and effectiveness.

BACKGROUND: The frontal cortex, relevant to global cognition and motor function, is recruited to compensate for mobility dysfunction in older adults. However, the in vivo neurophysiological (e.g., neurometabolites) underpinnings of the frontal cortex compensation for mobility dysfunction remain poorly understood. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationships among frontal cortex neurophysiology, mobility, and cognition in healthy older adults. METHODS: Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy (MRS) quantified N-acetylasparate (tNAA) and total choline (tCho) concentrations and ratios in the frontal cortex in 21 older adults. Four inertial sensors recorded the Timed Up & Go (TUG) test. Cognition was assessed using the Flanker Inhibitory Control and Attention Test which requires conflict resolution because of response interference from flanking distractors during incongruent trials. Congruent trials require no conflict resolution. RESULTS: tNAA concentration significantly related to the standing (p = 0.04) and sitting (p = 0.03) lean angles. tCho concentration (p = 0.04) and tCho ratio (p = 0.02) significantly related to TUG duration. tCho concentration significantly related to incongruent response time (p = 0.01). tCho ratio significantly related to both congruent (p = 0.009) and incongruent (p < 0.001) response times. Congruent (p = 0.02) and incongruent (p = 0.02) Flanker response times significantly related to TUG duration. CONCLUSIONS: Altered levels of frontal cortex neurometabolites are associated with both mobility and cognitive abilities in healthy older adults. Identifying neurometabolites associated with frontal cortex compensation of mobility dysfunction could improve targeted therapies aimed at improving mobility in older adults.

Despite the negative implications on women's health, pregnancy, and fetal outcomes, population-based studies on hematological indices among reproductive age women in India have received inadequate attention. This study aimed to generate normative ranges for various hematological parameters among these women. After ethics approval, apparently healthy (n = 5884) women (aged 18-40 years) were recruited from six eco-geographic zones of India. After various exclusions (n = 5412), including women having anemia, data of clinically, and biochemically healthy women (n = 472) was analysed to generate centiles (2.5 and 97.5th) and correlations. The mean age and mean BMI of women was 29.3 ± 6.5 years and 23.25 ± 3.26 kg/m2 with BP of 112.26 ± 8.9/74.04 ± 6.7 mmHg. The reference intervals for hemoglobin (12-15.1 gm/dl), RBC (3.68-5.55 millions/µl), WBC (4.1-11.26*109/L), platelet count (1.32-4.42*105/µl), and erythrocyte sedimentation rate (4.35-41.65 mm/hr) were different from currently used reference values (p < 0.05). However, these haematological indices did not vary among various age categories, geographical zones, ethnicities and rural or urban origins. Pearson's correlation revealed a statistically significant association between ESR, WBC, monocytes, and platelets with homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR). Women with HOMA-IR > 2 displayed a statistically significant differences in parameters like MCV, ESR, eosinophil and platelet counts as compared to the women with HOMA-IR < 2. This study provides a pioneering reference data of hematological indices among women of reproductive age in India. Despite the small sample size results can be extrapolated to the national population given the representative sampling of various geographical zones. BACKGROUND: Clinical forecasting models have potential to optimize treatment and improve outcomes in psychosis, but predicting long-term outcomes is challenging and long-term follow-up data are scarce. In this 10-year longitudinal study, we aimed to characterize the temporal evolution of cortical correlates of psychosis and their associations with symptoms. DESIGN: Structural magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) from people with first-episode psychosis and controls (n = 79 and 218) were obtained at enrollment, after 12 months (n = 67 and 197), and 10 years (n = 23 and 77), within the Thematically Organized Psychosis (TOP) study. Normative models for cortical thickness estimated on public MRI datasets (n = 42 983) were applied to TOP data to obtain deviation scores for each region and timepoint. Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS) scores were acquired at each timepoint along with registry data. Linear mixed effects models assessed effects of diagnosis, time, and their interactions on cortical deviations plus associations with symptoms. RESULTS: LMEs revealed conditional main effects of diagnosis and time × diagnosis interactions in a distributed cortical network, where negative deviations in patients attenuate over time. In patients, symptoms also attenuate over time. LMEs revealed effects of anterior cingulate on PANSS total, and insular and orbitofrontal regions on PANSS negative scores. CONCLUSIONS: This long-term longitudinal study revealed a distributed pattern of cortical differences which attenuated over time together with a reduction in symptoms. These findings are not in line with a simple neurodegenerative account of schizophrenia, and deviations from normative models offer a promising avenue to develop biomarkers to track clinical trajectories over time.

Objective: To generate normative data (ND) for executive functions tests in the Waranka minority population of Ecuador. Method: Four-hundred participants aged 6-17 completed the Symbol-Digit Modalities Test (SDMT), Trail-Making Test (TMT), Modified-Wisconsin Card Sorting Test (M-WCST), and Test of Colors-Words (STROOP). Scores were normed using multiple linear regressions, including age, age2, natural logarithm of mean parent education (MPE), sex, bilingualism, and two-way interactions as predictors. Results: Age by MPE and Age2 by MPE interactions arose for SDMT, so that children with illiterate parents scored lower than those with literate parents. Girls scored higher in SDMT. All TMT and M-WCST scores were influenced by age2. Age by MPE interaction was found for TMT-A, so that children with higher MPE went faster; and age by bilingualism interaction for TMT-B, so that more bilingual children needed less time. Stroop-Word and Color were influenced by age2 by MPE interaction, so that children, while older, scored higher, especially those with higher MPE. Also, age2 by sex interaction arose, so that girls increased scores curvilinearly while boys linearly. Word-Color was influenced by age, while Stroop-interference by age2. Age by MPE interaction was found for MCST-Categories and Perseveration, so that perseverations decreased to then increased, especially in those with illiterate parents. M-WCST-Category scores increased to then decrease later on age in children with illiterate parents. Z-scores calculated through indigenous ND were significantly lower than generated through non-indigenous norms. Conclusions: ND for minority populations are critical since Waranka sample performed worse when using non-indigenous norms for z-score calculation.

OBJECTIVE: The production of words in verbal fluency tests relies heavily on executive functions and linguistic abilities. New tests such as the famous people fluency test can also be useful in clinical practice and research. This test, in which participants are asked to name so many famous people, has the potential to distinguish healthy individuals from participants with neurological disorders such as mild cognitive impairment or Alzheimer's disease. METHOD: The aim of this study was to determine the psychometric validity of the test (Study 1) and to provide normative data in the adult population of French Quebec for the famous people fluency test (Study 2). RESULTS: The results of the normative study, derived from a sample of 378 healthy individuals between the ages of 50 and 92, showed that age and educational level significantly influence performance on the test. Therefore, percentile ranks were calculated for performance on the famous people fluency test, stratified for these two variables. The results of Study 2 showed that the test differentiated the performance of healthy participants from the performance of participants with mild cognitive impairment or Alzheimer's disease. The results also showed that the famous people fluency test has adequate convergent validity, established with a semantic fluency test, and that the results showed good stability over time (test-retest validity). CONCLUSION: Norms and psychometric data for the famous people fluency test will improve the ability of clinicians and researchers to better recognize executive and language impairments associated with pathological conditions.

BACKGROUND: To establish a normative database for macular vessel density (VD) measured by optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) and explore the parameters related to the VD. METHODS: An observational study in epidemiology. 5840 healthy elderly participants in Beichen district, Tianjin, China underwent detailed ophthalmic and systemic examinations. OCTA was performed in all subjects using a 6 × 6-mm line scan mode centered on the macula and the built-in software was used to quantify VD and stratify the retina. RESULTS: One thousand four hundred sixty-one healthy elderly citizens (30.4% men) were included, with a median age of 60.0 years (8.0 years) and an age range of 50 to 87 years.VDs in the different plexuses: superficial capillary plexus (SCP) 43.9% (3.2%), deep capillary plexus (DCP) 44.3% (2.8%), outer capillary plexus (OCP) 21.9% (5.9%), choriocapillaris (CC) 52.1% (1.4%). 90% medical reference range of the VDs at different plexuses was reported. Age was correlated with the VDs of each capillary plexus. Sex was correlated with the VDs of DCP and OCP, and the VDs of DCP (p < 0.001) and OCP (p = 0.015) in women were higher than that in men. After age and sex adjustment, choroid average thickness was positively correlated with VDs of SCP (R = 0.067, p = 0.010) and DCP (R = 0.108, p < 0.001), ganglion cell layer (GCL) average thickness (R = 0.072, p = 0.006) was positively correlated with the VD of OCP, best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) (R = 0.082, p = 0.002) was positively correlated with the VD of CC. CONCLUSIONS: In this study, the normative VD database of the Chinese urban healthy elderly population measured by the OCTA was established, and parameters related to the VD of each capillary plexus were analyzed, providing new ideas for the future study of the relationship between macular VD and disease. TRIAL REGISTRATION: The Beichen Eye Study had been registered on the Chinese Clinical Trial Registry website (registry number: ChiCTR2000032280) on April 25, 2020.

BACKGROUND: Active wrist joint position sense (JPS) is a feasible method for determining wrist proprioception. However, the normative values and factors affecting wrist JPS are not known. OBJECTIVES: To identify normative values of active wrist JPS in young healthy adults and explore the influence of sex, hand dominance and direction of wrist movement. DESIGN: Cross-sectional study. METHOD: JPS of 100 individuals aged 18-40 years, (male: female = 51:49) were measured at two wrist positions (20° flexion/extension) using the active wrist JPS test. Absolute error (in degrees) was calculated and summarized using descriptive measures. Kruskal-Wallis analysis of variance was performed to determine the differences in JPS error based on sex, dominance and direction of wrist movement. RESULTS: Mean absolute JPS flexion error on the dominant side was 3.47°(SD = 3.91°), and non-dominant side was 3.26°(SD = 3.23°). Mean absolute JPS extension error on the dominant side was 3.35°(SD = 3.43°), and non-dominant side was 4.59°(SD = 4.82°). Compared to males, females had more absolute error for flexion and extension on the dominant side. No significant difference was found in the absolute error between the dominant and non-dominant sides or between flexion and extension. CONCLUSION: These normative values of active JPS in young healthy adults can help clinicians while assessing proprioceptive impairments of the wrist. Differences in JPS errors due to sex were found, but not due to dominance or direction of movement. These findings can guide future research on mechanisms involved in wrist JPS.

BACKGROUND: Alzheimer's Disease (AD), identified as the most common type of dementia, presents considerable heterogeneity in clinical manifestations. Early intervention at the stage of mild cognitive impairment (MCI) holds potential in AD prevention. However, characterizing the heterogeneity of neurobiological abnormalities and identifying MCI subtypes pose significant challenges. METHODS: We constructed sex-specific normative age models of dynamic brain functional networks and mapped the deviations of the brain characteristics for individuals from multiple datasets, including 295 AD patients, 441 MCI patients, and 1160 normal controls (NC). Then, based on these individual deviation patterns, subtypes for both AD and MCI were identified using the clustering method and comprehensively assessed their similarity and differences. RESULTS: Individuals with AD and MCI were clustered into 2 subtypes, and these subtypes exhibited significant differences in both their intrinsic brain functional phenotypes and spatial atrophy patterns, as well as in disease progression and cognitive decline trajectories. The subtypes with positive deviations in AD and MCI shared similar deviation patterns, as well as those with negative deviations. There was a potential transformation of MCI with negative deviation patterns into AD, and these MCI have a more severe cognitive decline rate. CONCLUSIONS: This study quantifies neurophysiological heterogeneity by analyzing deviation patterns from the dynamic functional connectome normative model and identifies disease subtypes in AD and MCI using a comprehensive resting-state fMRI multicenter dataset. It provides new insights for developing early prevention and personalized treatment strategies for AD.

BACKGROUND: Increasing interest surrounds the utility of blood-based biomarkers for diagnosing sarcopenia. C-terminal agrin fragment (CAF), a marker of neuromuscular junction stability, is amongst the most promising candidates; however, a dearth of reference data impedes the incorporation of its use in public health settings. This study aimed to establish reference values for plasma CAF concentrations across adulthood in a large, well-characterized cohort of healthy adults; and comprehensively examine the association between plasma CAF levels and skeletal muscle health. METHODS: One thousand people aged between 18 and 87 years took part in this study (mean age = 50.4 years; 51% females). Body composition and muscle strength were examined using DXA and hand dynamometry. Plasma CAF concentrations were measured, in duplicate, using commercially available ELISA kits. Sarcopenia and individual sarcopenia signatures [low skeletal muscle index (SMI) only/low grip strength only] were classified using the EWGSOP2 algorithm. RESULTS: Detailed reference CAF values, according to sex and age, are presented. A significant but modest age-related increase in plasma CAF concentration was observed (P = 0.018). Across adulthood, CAF concentrations were negatively associated with grip strength and SMI (both P < 0.001). In people ≥50 years old, CAF concentrations were 22.6% higher in those with sarcopenia (P < 0.001), 11.3% higher in those with low SMI (P = 0.006) and 9.6% higher in those with low grip strength (P = 0.0034), compared with controls. People in the highest CAF concentration quartile, had 3.25 greater odds for sarcopenia (95% CI = 1.41-7.49, P = 0.005), 2.76 greater odds for low SMI (95% CI = 1.24-5.22, P = 0.012), and 2.56 greater odds for low grip strength (95% CI = 1.07-5.57, P = 0.037), compared with those in the lowest quartile. People with a CAF Z-score ≥2 had 9.52 greater odds for sarcopenia (95% CI = 3.01-30.05, P < 0.001) compared with a Z-score <1. Plasma CAF concentration had an acceptable level of diagnostic accuracy for sarcopenia (AUC = 0.772, 95% CI = 0.733-0.807, P < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: The reference values presented herein may guide the clinical interpretation of circulating CAF and help identify people at risk of poor skeletal muscle outcomes for inclusion in therapeutic interventions. Our findings add clarity to existing data, demonstrating a robust relationship between circulating CAF and skeletal muscle integrity in the largest adult cohort to date, and support the use of CAF as an accessible, cost-effective screening tool for sarcopenia. However, further research into the prognostic utility of plasma CAF, and the establishment of normative data from other populations, are urgently needed if routine CAF screening is to be embedded into public healthcare settings.

OBJECTIVE: The mini Social cognition & Emotional Assessment (mini-SEA) is a social cognition battery which assesses theory of mind and emotion recognition. Currently, no psychometrically validated measure of social cognition with adapted normative data exists for the middle-aged and elderly French-Quebec population. This project aims to determine the known-group discriminant validity of a cultural and linguistic adaptation of the mini-SEA between cognitively healthy people, those with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) or living with Alzheimer's Disease (AD). This study also aims to examine the stability of mini-SEA's performance over a 3-4-month time period, as well as to produce normative data for French-Quebec people aged 50 years. Normative data are derived for the full and an abbreviated version of the Faux Pas subtest. METHOD: The sample included 211 French-speaking participants from Quebec (Canada) aged 50 to 89 years. Mini-SEA's performance between a sub-sample of cognitively healthy people (n = 20), those with MCI (n = 20) or with AD (n = 20) was compared. A sub-sample of cognitively healthy people (n = 30) performed the task twice to estimate test-retest reliability. Socio-demographic variables' effects on scores were examined to produce normative data in the form of regression equations or percentile ranks. RESULTS: Significant differences emerged between cognitively healthy people and those with MCI or AD. Moreover, scores were relatively stable over a period of 3 to 4 months. Finally, for the normative data, age, gender, and education were associated with performance on the mini-SEA or its subtests. CONCLUSIONS: This study improves and standardizes social cognition's assessment among French-Quebec individuals, which will help characterize their cognitive profile.

Background: Personalized Normative Feedback (PNF) aims to modify misperceptions about peer consumption that influence one's drinking. PNF is usually a component in Brief Interventions delivered to university students. Despite this, whether PNF contributes to improving the effect of brief interventions is unclear. Objectives: This randomized controlled trial aimed to determine the role of PNF as an active ingredient in a face-to-face motivational brief intervention. Results: Participants were students from an Argentinian university (n=806; M=20.14; SD=3.17; 63.2% women) who presented at least one binge drinking episode in the last 12 months. Students were randomly assigned to 1) a Brief Intervention, 2) a Brief Intervention with PNF, or 3) an evaluation-only control group. The follow-up was three months later. After controlling sex and age, General Linear Models showed that both the brief intervention and the brief intervention with PNF reduced the quantity and frequency of alcohol consumption, binge drinking, and alcohol problems compared to the control condition. No differences were found between the brief intervention and the brief intervention with PNF. Also, treating eight students with brief intervention and 10 with brief intervention with PNF was necessary to benefit one student. Conclusions: In conclusion, this study demonstrates that brief intervention reduces alcohol consumption among Latin American university students and that PNF might not be an active ingredient of its effectiveness in this population. However, PNF could benefit students with specific characteristics, like those who overestimate their peers' drinking, highlighting the need to study moderators of effectiveness further.

Cerebrospinal fluid total-tau (t-tau) and neurofilament light chain (NfL) are biomarkers of neurodegeneration and are increased in Alzheimer's disease (AD). In order to adjust for age-related increases in t-tau and NfL, cross-sectional age-adjusted norms were developed based on amyloid negative cognitively normal (CN) adults aged 41-78 years (CN, n = 137). The age-adjusted norms for t-tau and NfL did not improve receiver operating curve based diagnostic accuracies in individuals with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) due to AD (AD-MCI, n = 144). Furthermore, while NfL was correlated with higher age in AD-MCI, no significant correlation was found for t-tau. The cox proportional hazard models, applied in 429 participants with baseline t-tau and NfL, showed higher hazard ratio of progression to MCI or dementia without age-adjustments (HR = 3.39 for t-tau and HR = 3.17 for NfL), as compared to using our norms (HR = 2.29 for t-tau and HR = 1.89 for NfL). Our results indicate that utilizing normative reference data could obscure significant age-related increases in these markers associated with neurodegeneration and AD leading to a potential loss of overall diagnostic accuracy.

Children and adolescents with conduct problems participate in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), either in individual or group format, in view of learning social problem-solving skills that enable them to behave in more independent and situation-appropriate ways. Parents must support their child's learning processes in everyday life and therefore these processes need attention in CBT sessions in which parents and their child participate. The social problem-solving model of CBT previously described (Matthys & Schutter, Clin Child Fam Psychol Rev 25:552-572, 2022; Matthys & Schutter, Clin Child Fam Psychol Rev 26:401-415, 2023) consists of nine psychological skills. In this narrative review we propose that instead of addressing each skill separately in sessions with both parents and their child, therapists work on three schemas (latent mental structures): (1) goals, (2) outcome expectations, and (3) normative beliefs about aggression. Based on social-cognitive and cognitive neuroscience studies we argue that these three schemas affect five core social problem-solving skills: (1) interpretation, (2) clarification of goals, (3) generations of solutions, (4) evaluation of solutions, and (5) decision-making. In view of tailoring CBT to the individual child's characteristic schemas and associated social problem-solving skills, we suggest that children and adolescents participate in individual sessions with their parents. The therapist uses Socratic questioning in order to find out characteristic schemas of the child, encourage reflection on these schemas, and explore alternative schemas that had previously been outside the child's attention. The therapist functions as a model for parents to ask their child questions about the relevant schemas with a view of achieving changes in the schemas.

Heart rate variability (HRV) is related to cardiac vagal control and emotional regulation and an index for cardiac vagal control and cardiac autonomic activity. This study aimed to develop the Taiwan HRV normative database covering individuals aged 20 to 70 years and to assess its diagnosing validity in patients with major depressive disorder (MDD). A total of 311 healthy participants were in the HRV normative database and divided into five groups in 10-year age groups, and then the means and standard deviations of the HRV indices were calculated. We recruited 272 patients with MDD for cross-validation, compared their HRV indices with the normative database, and then converted them to Z-scores to explore the deviation of HRV in MDD patients from healthy groups. The results found a gradual decline in HRV indices with advancing age in the HC group, and females in the HC group exhibit higher cardiac vagal control and parasympathetic activity than males. Conversely, patients in the MDD group demonstrate lower HRV indices than those in the HC group, with their symptoms of depression and anxiety showing a negative correlation with HRV indices. The Taiwan HRV normative database has good psychometric characteristics of cross-validation.

RESUMO

Many important questions in health professions education require datasets that are built from several sources, in some cases using data collected for a different purpose. In building and maintaining these datasets, project leaders will need to make decisions about the data. While such decisions are often construed as technical, there are several normative concerns, such as who should have access, how the data will be used, how products resulting from the data will be shared, and how to ensure privacy of the individuals the data is about is respected, etc. Establishing a framework for data governance can help project leaders in avoiding problems, related to such matters, that could limit what can be learned from the data or that might put the project (or future projects) at risk. In this paper, we highlight several normative challenges to be addressed when determining a data governance framework. Drawing from lessons in global health, we illustrate three kinds of normative challenges for projects that rely on data from multiple sources or involved partnerships across institutions or jurisdictions: (1) legal and regulatory requirements, (2) consent, and (3) equitable sharing and fair distribution.
