OBJECTIVES: This systematic review of qualitative studies explored interventions to improve student nurses' knowledge, attitudes or willingness to work with older people. Student nurses are likely to encounter older people in all health and aged care settings, however, research demonstrates that few have career aspirations in gerontological nursing. METHODS: Qualitative systematic review method based on the Cochrane Handbook for Systematic Reviews of Interventions. RESULTS: Search of Medline, Embase, PsycINFO, EBSCOhost and Scopus yielded 1841 articles which were screened to include primary research about educational interventions to improve student nurses' knowledge, attitudes and/or willingness to work with older people. Data extraction was performed on the 14 included studies, and data were analysed using directed content analysis. The Mixed Methods Appraisal Tool (MMAT) was used the assess the quality of the studies. CONCLUSIONS: Educational interventions included theory or practice courses, or a combination of theory and practice. While most interventions changed nursing students' negative attitudes towards older people, few increased their willingness to work with them. Practice courses had the most significant impact on willingness to work with older people. Quality assessment revealed methodical limitations. More research is needed to better understand the elements of practice interventions that enhance student nurses' knowledge, attitudes, and willingness to work with older people, so that they can be replicated.

Resumo Introdução: As ações desenvolvidas na Atenção Primária à Saúde são um dos pontos fortes de combate à tuberculose. Nesse nível de atenção, o contato contínuo do enfermeiro por meio da consulta de enfermagem permite manter relação com a população adoecida. Diante da relação enfermeiro-pessoa cuidada para o estabelecimento do vínculo e adesão ao tratamento contra tuberculose, compreende-se a importância do referencial teórico de Imogene King para estruturar a interação enfermeiro-pessoa cuidada e oferecer uma dinâmica para esse processo. Objetivo: Analisar a relação enfermeiro-pessoa afetada pela tuberculose fundamentada na Teoria do Alcance de Metas de Imogene King. Método: Estudo descritivo com abordagem qualitativa, com 14 enfermeiros da APS, selecionadas por conveniência. A coleta de dados ocorreu de agosto a novembro de 2018, por meio de entrevista semiestruturada, elaborada com base no Registro Meta-Orientado de Enfermagem de Imogene King. Os dados foram analisados de forme qualitativa pelo Software IRAMUTEQ. A pesquisa foi aprovada pelo Comitê de Ética. Resultados: Após a análise, emergiram quatro classes: 1) relação estabelecida com base no acolhimento; 2) relação enfermeiro-pessoa com tuberculose e o apoio de outros profissionais e familiares; 3) relação estabelecida com vistas ao cumprimento do tratamento; e 4) relação estabelecida para enfrentamento do preconceito diante da tuberculose. Conclusão: O acolhimento, a família e o vínculo entre profissional, paciente e equipe da Atenção Primária à Saúde fortalecem o enfrentamento da doença e reforçam a adesão ao tratamento medicamentoso.


Resumen Introducción: Uno de los puntos fuertes de la lucha contra la tuberculosis son las acciones desarrolladas en la atención primaria de salud. En este nivel asistencial, el contacto continuo de las enfermerías a través de la consulta de enfermería permite mantener una relación con la población enferma. Frente a la relación enfermería-persona para el establecimiento del vínculo y la adherencia al tratamiento contra la tuberculosis, se entiende la importancia del referente teórico de Imogene King para estructurar la interacción enfermería-persona y ofrecer una dinámica para este proceso. Objetivo: Análisis de la relación entre el personal de enfermería y las personas afectadas por la tuberculosis, a partir de la teoría del logro de objetivos de Imogene King. Método: Estudio descriptivo con abordaje cualitativo, con 14 enfermeras de atención primaria de salud, seleccionadas por conveniencia. La recolección de datos ocurrió de agosto a noviembre de 2018, a través de una entrevista semiestructurada, elaborada con base en el registro meta-orientado de enfermería de Imogene King. Los datos fueron analizados cualitativamente utilizando el software IRAMUTEQ. La investigación fue aprobada por el Comité de Ética. Resultados: Después del análisis, surgieron cuatro clases: 1) relación establecida con base en la recepción, 2) relación enfermería-persona con tuberculosis y apoyo de otras personas profesionales y familiares, 3) relación establecida con miras al cumplimiento del tratamiento y 4) relación establecida para combatir los prejuicios contra la tuberculosis. Conclusión: La acogida, la familia y el vínculo entre profesional, paciente y equipo de atención primaria de salud fortalecen el afrontamiento de la enfermedad y refuerzan la adherencia al tratamiento farmacológico.


Abstract Introduction: One of the main aspects in the fight against tuberculosis are the actions developed in Primary Health Care (PHC). At this level of care, the nurse's continuous contact through the nursing consultation allows them to maintain a relationship with the sick population. Regarding the nurse-patient relationship for establishing a bond and the compliance with tuberculosis treatment, we understand the importance of Imogene King's theoretical framework for structuring the nurse-patient interaction and offering a dynamic for this process. Objective: To analyze the nurse-tuberculosis patient relationship based on Imogene King's Theory of Goal Achievement. Method: A descriptive study with a qualitative approach, with 14 PHC nurses, selected by convenience. Data were collected from August to November 2018 through semi-structured interviews based on Imogene King's Meta-Oriented Nursing Record. The data were analyzed qualitatively using the IRAMUTEQ software. The research was approved by the Ethics Committee. Results: After the analysis, four classes emerged: 1) relationship established on the basis of welcoming; 2) nurse-tuberculosis patient relationship and the support of other professionals and family members; 3) relationship established towards treatment compliance; and 4) relationship established to confront prejudice associated with tuberculosis. Conclusion: The welcoming, the family, and the bond between the professional, the patient and Primary Health Care team strengthen the coping with the disease and reinforce the compliance with the pharmacological treatment.

Objective: To ensure the best possible care, the perspective of PHC nurse work experience during the COVID-19 pandemic should be considered when developing nursing care protocols for older patients who receive PHC services. Method: This exploratory qualitative study was conducted with 18 nurses working continuously in PHC between the first and fifth waves of the pandemic. Semi-structured thematic interviews were undertaken. Qualitative thematic content analysis was conducted to identify and group the themes that emerged from the discourse. Interviews were transcribed and analyzed using thematic analysis. Results: The first topic describes the nurses' experiences of physical and mental suffering in caring for older patients in response to the pandemic. The second topic covers the experience of reorganizing PHC work. The third topic focuses on the difficulties of caring for older patients. The final topic includes issues of support needs for nurses in PHC work. Conclusion: The experience and understanding of PHC nurses in caring for older people during the COVID pandemic should lead to significant changes in the system of nursing care for geriatric patients and in the cooperative role within geriatric care specialist teams. Drawing on the experience of COVID-19, it is necessary to work on the weak points of PHC exposed by the pandemic in order to improve the quality of care and life for geriatric patients.

It is important to study the awareness of retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) among neonatal care nurses in hospitals. Unfortunately, there is a lack of studies conducted among nurses on this subject in Palestine. Thus, this study purposed to assess the knowledge, attitudes, and practices toward ROP among neonatal intensive care nurses in Palestine. A cross-sectional was used to conduct this study. A convenience sampling method was utilized to recruit 289 neonate intensive care nurses working in private and governmental hospitals. The findings showed that around 48.0% of the nurses had low knowledge about preventing ROP. Most of the nurses (78%) reported a neutral attitude toward preventing ROP. Moreover, overall nurses' practices regarding ROP were fair (57.1%). There was a difference in practices regarding ROP according to the health sector (P < .05), in which the private sector had better practices compared to the governmental sector. Additionally, there was a significant difference in knowledge regarding ROP according to educational level (P < .05). Also, a significant difference was found in knowledge and practices regarding ROP according to nurses' experience. Attitudes and practices were the main significant predictors of knowledge (B = 0.153, P < .05; B = 0.172, P < .05, respectively). Knowledge and practices were the main predictors of attitudes (B = 0.126, P < .05; B = 469, P < .001), respectively. Knowledge, attitudes, and experience in neonate intensive care nurses were the main significant predictors of practices (B = 0.135, P < .05; B = 0.449, P < .001; B = 0.224, P < .05, respectively). It is necessary to develop an educational program and competency-based training programs for neonate intensive care nurses about ROP and implement preventive strategies.

AIM: Investigate the influence of organizational intelligence on the development of soft skills and the overall thriving of nurses at Alexandria Main University Hospital in Egypt. DESIGN: A cross-sectional descriptive design following STROBE guidelines examined the relationship between organizational intelligence, soft skills, and nurses' thriving. METHODS AND TOOLS: Data were collected from 740 nurses working across critical care units using structured questionnaires. The questionnaires assessed organizational intelligence, soft skills, and thriving at work. Sociodemographic characteristics, including age, gender, education, and nursing experience, were also collected. Statistical analyses were used to analyze the data, including ANOVA, t-tests, Pearson correlation, and stepwise regression. RESULTS: The findings revealed nurses' positive perceptions of organizational culture and documentation skills. However, areas such as measures and rewards and staff relations and communication indicated opportunities for improvement. Nurses reported high vitality levels but needed more learning opportunities at work. Significant correlations were found between demographic variables, organizational intelligence, soft skills, and thriving. Organizational intelligence demonstrated a robust positive relationship with both soft skills and thriving. Age, gender, education, and experience significantly influenced nurses' soft skills and thriving. CONCLUSION: The study highlights the importance of organizational intelligence in enhancing nurses' professional capabilities and well-being. Addressing demographic factors and fostering a supportive work environment is crucial for optimizing nursing practice and organizational effectiveness. NURSING IMPLICATIONS: Insights from this study can inform targeted interventions and policy decisions to enhance nursing practice, organizational development, and healthcare outcomes in Egypt. Fostering organizational intelligence and soft skills among nurses can improve patient care, increase job satisfaction, and overall organizational success.

BACKGROUND: Ethical decision-making in end-of-life care is one of the most challenging aspects of healthcare: providing ethical care to the society is one of the most important responsibilities of healthcare professionals. In order to assess nurses' ethical decision-making in end-of-life care, researchers need a specialized and comprehensive instrument which is sufficiently valid and reliable. The present study was conducted to translate and test the psychometric properties of the Persian version of Nurses' Ethical Decision-Making in End-of-Life Care Scale (NEDM-EOLCS). METHODS: This is a cross-sectional, multi-centric study with a methodological design The participants were selected via convenience sampling from five hospitals located in Iran. In total, 1320 nurses (660 for exploratory factor analysis and 660 for confirmatory factor analysis) participated in the study. The original NEDM-EOLCS was translated into Persian and subsequently the psychometric properties of the scale were assessed according to COSMIN criteria. RESULTS: Exploratory factor analysis (EFA) showed the factor loading of the 55 items to be between 0.62 and 0.88, all of which were significant. Also, exploratory factor analysis showed that 3 factors (perceived professional accountability, moral reasoning/moral agency and moral practice) explained 74.51% of the variance. Confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) results verified the good fit of the data (a chi-square of 21.74, df = 7, P = 0.001) RMSEA = 0.01, CFI = 0.96, NFI = 0.95, and TLI = 0.97). The reliability of the scale was measured in terms of its internal consistency and the Cronbach's alpha of the whole instrument was found to be 0.98. CONCLUSION: The Persian version of NEDM-EOLCS for nurses is sufficiently valid and reliable. Thus, this instrument can be used to measure nurses' ethical decision-making in end-of-life care and identify the most effective strategies, e.g. educational interventions, to improve ethical decision-making skills in end-of-life care in these healthcare professionals as necessary.

Background: There is increasing evidence of the need for treatment engagement between Persons with Severe Mental Illnesses (PwSMIs) and Mental Health Professionals (MHPs). This therapeutic process involves collaborative work between patients and MHPs, which improves the condition. Community nurses are uniquely positioned to facilitate this process as they act as the focal point of interaction between patients and the health system. Methods: This qualitative study explored the community nurses' experiences in treatment engagement with PwSMI through eight group interviews of 35 community nurses from District Mental Health Programs (DMHPs) across Karnataka (South India) from February 2020 to March 2020. The audio recordings of the interviews were transcribed and coded to arrive at themes and subthemes. Results: The major themes identified were factors influencing treatment engagement, strategies to tackle treatment nonengagement, and challenges in dealing with nonengagement. The reasons for nonengagement were lack of insight and lack of knowledge of sociocultural, logistic, and treatment-related factors. The DMHP teams contacted patients through phone calls, home visits, and liaisons with health workers and intervened with them through education and depot injections. The major challenges were difficulty conducting home visits, distances, the unavailability of medications, and the need for adequate infrastructure and human resources. Conclusion: Community nurses address a few factors of nonengagement, such as insight, sociocultural factors, and treatment-related factors. Addressing the systemic challenges and adequate training of nurses in intervening in the dropped-out PwSMIs would help to reduce the treatment gap.

Introduction: Healthcare professionals' awareness of adverse drug reaction reporting and pharmacovigilance practices differ by country. The study assesses healthcare professionals' knowledge, practice, and potential barriers to pharmacovigilance-related practices and reporting adverse drug reaction. Methods: A cross-sectional investigation was conducted in government and private healthcare settings. The study included licensed physicians, pharmacists, and nurses. To examine knowledge, practice, and potential barriers to pharmacovigilance-related practices and adverse drug reaction reporting, a 22-item validated questionnaire was used. Results: The final analysis included 311 healthcare professionals. Most healthcare professionals, 59% (N = 182), mentioned encountering patients with adverse drug reactions during the last year. On the other hand, most healthcare professionals, 54% (n = 167), mentioned that they had not reported adverse drug reactions. A good proportion of respondents mentioned that it is essential to report adverse drug reactions (N = 288, 92.6%), availability of adverse drug reactions reporting forms in practice sites (N = 216, 69.5%), had awareness regarding how to report adverse drug reactions (N = 221, 71.1%), the necessity of reporting minor/less important adverse drug reactions (N = 265, 85.2%), and were trained on how to report adverse drug reactions (N = 201, 64.6%). Adverse drug reaction reporting program in the United Arab Emirates (N = 148, 47.6) was known to many healthcare professionals. Lack of time was the major impediment to reporting adverse drug reactions at 42.7% (N = 133). The predictor variable work experience does add to the model (p < 0.05) concerning association with filling of adverse drug reaction forms (Estimate = 0.380; SE = 0.452; p = 0.400), professional role (Estimate = 0.454; SE = 0.673; p = 0.500). In addition, the predictor variable practice setting adds to the model (p < 0.05) concerning the knowledge regarding the availability of adverse drug reaction reporting forms (Estimate = -1.229; SE = 0.298; p = 0.000), training on how to report adverse drug reactions (Estimate = -0.660; SE = 0.294; p = 0.025), and awareness regarding the adverse drug reaction reporting program in the United Arab Emirates (Estimate = -1.032; SE = 0.280; p = 0.000). Conclusion: Pharmacists had the most knowledge regarding adverse drug reaction reporting and pharmacovigilance. The underreporting of adverse drug reactions was documented among physicians and nurses. Lack of time was the most significant barrier to reporting adverse drug reactions, followed by uncertainty and complicated adverse drug reaction documentation forms.

BACKGROUND: Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is a global pandemic caused by the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus, SARS-CoV-2. Infection with SARS-CoV-2 primarily occurs through binding to angiotensin-converting enzyme-2 (ACE2), which is abundantly expressed in various anatomical sites, including the nasopharynx, lungs, cardiovascular system, and gastrointestinal and genitourinary tracts. This study aimed to nurses' knowledge and protective health behaviors about prevention of covid-19 pandemic complications. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A descriptive design study was conducted from October 1, 2022, to March 15, 2023. A non-probability purposive sample of 50 nurses from different educational levels, genders, and departments at Baghdad teaching hospitals was selected. Data collected were analyzed using SPSS version 25.0. RESULTS: The study comprised an equal distribution of male and female participants, with the majority (44%) aged between 22 and 30 years. A significant proportion (52%) of nurses held institute degrees. Forty-six percent were single, and the majority (74%) had 1-5 years of experience. The mean scores were 0.70 for nurses' knowledge and 3.22 for nurses' protective health behaviors. CONCLUSIONS: The findings indicate that nurses possess satisfactory knowledge and exhibit high levels of protective health behaviors regarding complications associated with the COVID-19 pandemic. It is recommended to conduct future research focusing on nurses' knowledge and practices related to patient care in the context of a pandemic.

RESUMO

A service redesign in 2019 led to the formation of an integrated team of nurses and physiotherapists working together to form a bladder, bowel and pelvic health team across two hospitals and the community in Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust. The last few years have had their challenges, but the team is now very successful and has won awards for the integration and achievements, particularly in the redesign of the containment product service. Integrating two professional groups has led to excellent team-work and smoother patient journeys.

BACKGROUND: In low-and middle-income countries inadequate neonatal pain management persists as a significant public health issue despite the availability of guidelines. Newborns often experience pain from routine medical and surgical procedures, with limited nurses' knowledge and suboptimal practices posing common obstacles to effective neonatal pain management in hospital settings. Hence, this study aimed to evaluate nurses' knowledge and practices related to neonatal pain management and the factors influencing them in public hospitals in West Oromia, Ethiopia, in 2022. METHODS: A multicenter cross-sectional study was conducted among 203 nurses working in public hospitals in West Oromia from 8th May-6th June 2022. Data was gathered using structured, self-administered questionnaire and sampled through simple random sampling. The collected data were coded and entered into a computer using Epi-Data version 4.6 Statistical Software. They were analyzed using the Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS; IBM Corporation) version 26. Binary logistic regression was used to identify significant independent variables at p < 0.05. FINDINGS: In this study, 127 (62.6%) exhibited adequate knowledge, while 33 (16.3%) nurses demonstrated good practice in neonatal pain management. Attending lectures or receiving training about neonatal pain management was found to be significantly associated with nurses' knowledge of neonatal pain management [AOR, 2.31, 95%CI; 1.29-4.27]. On the other, having adequate knowledge of neonatal pain management [AOR, 3.3, 95%CI; 1.14-9.32]; the presence of a pain management policy in place [AOR, 5.44, 95% CI; 1.92-15.37] and attending lectures on neonatal pain management [AOR, 2.55, 95% CI; 1.09-5.97] were found to be significantly associated to nurses' practices. CONCLUSION: Given the substandard level of nurses' practice in neonatal pain management. It is suggested to enhance the nurses' knowledge and practice about neonatal pain management by providing refreshment courses, training sessions, or facilitating nurses' opportunity access to reading resources about neonatal pain management.

BACKGROUND: Considering the severe and sudden changes in the job conditions of nurses during the covid-19 pandemic, the increase in job tensions during this critical period and its consequences on the quantity and quality of nursing care, this study aims to investigate the job stress of nurses during the covid-19 pandemic and its predictors in Iran. METHODS: This cross-sectional study was conducted on 400 nurses in 'Kashan', Iran, who were randomly selected using stratified sampling. Data were collected using two questionnaires on occupational stress and potential related factors. The data were analyzed in SPSS version 16. RESULTS: The results showed that the occupational stress of nurses in Iran was at a medium to high level with a mean and standard deviation of 103.773 ± 15.742 (scale of 34-136). Factors such as satisfaction with physical health, quality of work life, satisfaction with the availability of facilities, sense of coherence, education level, work experience, job burnout, male gender, being native, and workplace were predictors of occupational stress and explained 23.3% of the variance in occupational stress score. The highest contribution was related to satisfaction with physical health. CONCLUSION: Considering the consequences of occupational stress for nurses, it is crucial for health and nursing authorities to take these factors into consideration in policy-making and planning.

This study aims to provide a meta-synthesis of qualitative studies examining the perceptions and experiences of nurses who cared for patients in dedicated COVID-19 hospitals in South Korea. We searched key health databases (RISS, KISS, KMbase, NDSL, KoreaMed, DBpia, PubMed, CINAHL, and Cochrane) from September to November 2023. We reviewed and analyzed articles using a thematic synthesis approach. The quality of the studies was ascertained using the Critical Appraisal Skills Program checklist for qualitative research. Ultimately, 13 studies involving 219 nurses were included in the final review. Six major themes and thirteen subthemes emerged. During the unexpected COVID-19 pandemic, nurses were able to overcome difficult situations through their interactions with patients, sense of a professional mission, and commitment to nursing. Most importantly, they persevered through their collaboration and closeness with fellow nurses, despite confusion about their professional identity, the ethical dilemmas they faced in patient care, and the conflicting attitudes of their social support system. To prepare for future infectious disease outbreaks, a multifaceted support system should be established to enable nurses to have positive interactions with their families, colleagues, and patients, which have become central to their resilience.

Evidence-based practice (EBP) is an essential component of healthcare practice that ensures the delivery of high-quality care by integrating the best available evidence. This study aimed to explore factors influencing EBP among nursing professionals in Taiwan. A cross-sectional survey study was conducted with 752 registered nurses and nurse practitioners recruited from a regional teaching hospital in southern Taiwan. EBP competency was evaluated using the Taipei Evidence-Based Practice Questionnaire (TEBPQ). The results showed that participation in evidence-based courses or training within the past year had the strongest association with EBP competencies (Std. B = 0.157, p < 0.001). Holding a graduate degree (Std. B = 0.151, p < 0.001), working in gynecology or pediatrics (Std. B = 0.126, p < 0.001), searching the literature in electronic databases (Std. B = 0.072, p = 0.039), and able to read academic articles in English (Std. B = 0.088, p = 0.005) were significantly associated with higher TEBPQ scores. Younger age (Std. B = -0.105, p = 0.005) and male gender (Std. B = 0.089, p = 0.010) were also identified as factors contributing to higher EBP competencies. The study highlights the importance of ongoing professional development, including EBP training and language proficiency, in enhancing EBP competencies among nursing professionals in Taiwan.

AIM: To evaluate registered nurses' perceptions of whether the mandated use of the early warning system vital signs tool impacts the development of nurses' higher-order thinking skills. DESIGN: A concurrent mixed methods study design. METHOD: Using an online survey, registered nurses' perceptions were elucidated on whether early warning system algorithmic tools affected the development of their higher-order thinking. Likert-type matrix questions with additional qualitative fields were used to obtain information on nurse's perceptions of the tool's usefulness, clinical confidence in using the tool, compliance with escalation protocols, work environment and perceived compliance barriers. RESULTS: Most of the 305 (91%) participants included in the analysis had more than 5 years of nursing experience. Most nurses supported the early warning tool and were happy to comply with escalation protocols if the early warning score concurred with their assessment of the patient (63.6%). When the score and the nurse's higher-order thinking did not align, some had the confidence to override the escalation protocol (40.0%), while others omitted (69.4%) or inaccurately documented vital signs (63.3%) to achieve the desired score. Very few nurses (3.6%) believe using early warning tools did not impede the development of higher-order thinking. CONCLUSION: Although experienced nurses appreciate the support of early warning tools, most value patient safety above the tools and rely on their higher-order thinking. The sustained development and use of nurses' higher-order thinking should be encouraged, possibly by adding a critical thinking criterion to existing algorithmic tools. IMPACT: The study has implications for all nurses who utilize algorithmic tools, such as early warning systems, in their practice. Relying heavily on algorithmic tools risks impeding the development of higher-order thinking. Most experienced nurses prioritize their higher-order thinking in decision-making but believe early warning tools can impede higher-order thinking. Internet addiction and cyberchondria have a bidirectional relationship. However, no known studies have evaluated the moderating role of anxiety sensitivity in that relationship. The study aimed to determine whether anxiety sensitivity moderates the relationship between internet addiction and cyberchondria among Jordanian nurses. Data were collected from 303 nurses using a web-based survey and convenience snowballing sampling methods using a cross-sectional research design. The Internet Addiction Test and the short version of the Cyberchondria Severity Scale were used to assess internet addiction and cyberchondria. Nurses reported mild internet addiction, low anxiety sensitivity, and moderate cyberchondria. Also, these findings suggested that sensitivity to anxious feelings moderates the relationship between internet addiction and cyberchondria. These findings would help nurses use psychosocial interventions for people with internet addiction and cyberchondria by understanding how their anxiety sensitivity promotes their internet addiction and cyberchondria.

AIM: To explore and describe the daily experiences of non-psychiatric nurses working in selected acute psychiatric wards in South Africa. DESIGN: A qualitative explorative and descriptive study design was used. METHODS: Individual face-to-face semi-structured interviews were used to gather data from fifteen non-psychiatric nurses with a minimum of one month of experience working in acute psychiatric wards in Limpopo Province, South Africa. Data were analysed using eight Tech techniques. The study is reported following consolidation criteria for reporting qualitative research. RESULTS: Findings on non-psychiatric nurses' daily experience revealed three themes: (1) Unsafe working environment, (2) Managing difficulties due to lack of skills and (3) Strategies to support non-psychiatric nurses in acute psychiatric wards. Findings suggested institutional and managerial interventions in the form of orientation, in-service training and workshops and resource provision. Future studies should be done to develop a model for supporting non-psychiatric nurses in Limpopo Province, South Africa's acute psychiatric wards.

Background and Aims: Enterocutaneous fistula is a severe complication of an open abdomen, which poses devastating challenges for critical care nurses. The study aimed to explore and describe the challenges faced by critical care nurses caring for patients with enterocutaneous fistulas in a tertiary public hospital in Gauteng, South Africa. Methods: A qualitative, exploratory, descriptive, and contextual design was conducted to understand the challenges experienced by the critical care nurses caring for patients with enterocutaneous fistulas. The standards for reporting qualitative research checklists are utilized. The study conducted four semistructured focus group interviews with six members in each group. Results: Critical care nurses revealed two overarching themes: the challenges regarding difficult nursing care and the lack of resources to provide quality patient care. Care of patients with ECF highlighted that nurses were not coping with the care of such patients. Conclusion: Collaboration of a multidisciplinary team involving dieticians, surgeons, and enterostomal therapy nurses could improve the management of ECF without surgical intervention, increase the knowledge and skills of nurses, alleviate their challenges, and yield safe patient outcomes. Standardized and updated protocols will ensure the best practices toward quality patient care that facilitate healing, closure, and reducing mortality and morbidity rates. The key principles for caring for patients with open abdomen, presenting with enterocutaneous fistulas, are based on correcting fluids and electrolytes, nutritional optimization and support, control of abdominal sepsis, wound care management, pain control, and emotional support to critical care nurses and ward nurses.

BACKGROUND: Medical Assistance in Dying (MAiD) was legalized in Canada in 2016. Canada's legislation is the first to permit Nurse Practitioners (NP) to serve as independent MAiD assessors and providers. Registered Nurses' (RN) also have important roles in MAiD that include MAiD care coordination; client and family teaching and support, MAiD procedural quality; healthcare provider and public education; and bereavement care for family. Nurses have a right under the law to conscientious objection to participating in MAiD. Therefore, it is essential to prepare nurses in their entry-level education for the practice implications and moral complexities inherent in this practice. Knowing what nursing students think about MAiD is a critical first step. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to develop a survey to measure nursing students' knowledge, attitudes and beliefs, influences, and willingness to be involved in MAiD in the Canadian context. METHODS: The design was a mixed-method, modified e-Delphi method that entailed item generation from the literature, item refinement through a 2 round survey of an expert faculty panel, and item validation through a cognitive focus group interview with nursing students. The settings were a University located in an urban area and a College located in a rural area in Western Canada. RESULTS: During phase 1, a 56-item survey was developed from existing literature that included demographic items and items designed to measure experience with death and dying (including MAiD), education and preparation, attitudes and beliefs, influences on those beliefs, and anticipated future involvement. During phase 2, an expert faculty panel reviewed, modified, and prioritized the items yielding 51 items. During phase 3, a sample of nursing students further evaluated and modified the language in the survey to aid readability and comprehension. The final survey consists of 45 items including 4 case studies. DISCUSSION: Systematic evaluation of knowledge-to-date coupled with stakeholder perspectives supports robust survey design. This study yielded a survey to assess nursing students' attitudes toward MAiD in a Canadian context. CONCLUSION: The survey is appropriate for use in education and research to measure knowledge and attitudes about MAiD among nurse trainees and can be a helpful step in preparing nursing students for entry-level practice.

BACKGROUND: Mothers are recommended to breastfeed their children but can find it challenging and experience breastfeeding problems. Qualified breastfeeding counselling from healthcare professionals can help mothers master breastfeeding, but there is a need to explore mothers' lived experiences with receiving breastfeeding counselling. We aimed to reveal breastfeeding mothers' experiences with receiving breastfeeding counselling from midwives and public health nurses (PHNs) to provide a deeper insight into the phenomenon of breastfeeding counselling, which may improve breastfeeding counselling in practice. METHODS: A qualitative design with a hermeneutic phenomenological approach was used. Individual interviews of 11 breastfeeding mothers from Norway were conducted from September 2021 to 2022. Van Manen's guided existential inquiry guided the reflective process to provide deeper insights into the phenomenon of breastfeeding counselling. RESULTS: The study captured the meaning of breastfeeding mothers' lived experiences with breastfeeding counselling. Three themes and eight sub-themes were found. Breastfeeding was at stake for the mothers because breastfeeding could be reduced or stopped, and qualified breastfeeding counselling from midwives and PHNs was essential for them to establish and continue breastfeeding. They needed to be perceived as both breastfeeding mothers and as women with their own needs to master everyday life during the breastfeeding period. CONCLUSIONS: This study offers insights to midwives, PHNs and others offering breastfeeding counselling by facilitating an understanding of being a breastfeeding mother receiving breastfeeding counselling. Qualified breastfeeding counselling and a trusting relationship with midwives and PHNs are essential for mothers to establish and continue breastfeeding, while deficient counselling may cause breastfeeding difficulties. Mothers need to be treated as whole and competent persons to avoid objectification and fathers/partners need to be included in breastfeeding counselling. The 'Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative' should be continued, and guidelines should align with the mothers' need to incorporate breastfeeding into their daily lives during the breastfeeding period.
