RESUMO
Organotin compounds (OTCs), such as tributyltin (TBT) and triphenyltin (TPhT), are released in aquatic environments from antifouling coatings and can cause imposex, an abnormal condition where female snails develop male sexual characteristics. This study investigates temporal variations in imposex incidence along the Colombian Caribbean coast following the 2008 global ban on TBT-based antifouling paints. Over a 12-year period, we assessed imposex in 1,384 adults snails from six species (58% female and 42% male) during 2012, 2016, and 2023. In 2012, just four years after the ban, imposex incidence in some sites reached 100% in the neogastropods Purpura patula, Stramonita haemastoma, Stramonita rustica, and Thais deltoideia. In 2016, imposex in some sites reached 81% for the mesogastropod Strombus pugilis and 39% for the neogastropod Melongena melongena. By 2023, imposex decreased for the first four neogastropods, persisted for S. pugilis, and increased for M. melongena only in Cartagena Bay and the Tolú marina. These findings indicate a general decline in imposex over time, aligning with the ban, but also suggest potential new sources of contamination as imposex rates increased in some previously unaffected areas.
RESUMO
Tributyltin (TBT) is an environmental contaminant present on all continents, including Antarctica, with a potent biocidal action. Its use began to be intensified during the 1960s. It was effectively banned in 2003 but remains in the environment to this day due to several factors that increase its half-life and its misuse despite the bans. In addition to the endocrine-disrupting effect of TBT, which may lead to imposex induction in some invertebrate species, there are several studies that demonstrate that TBT also has an immunotoxic effect. The immunotoxic effects that have been observed experimentally in vertebrates using in vitro and in vivo models involve different mechanisms; mainly, there are alterations in the expression and/or secretion of cytokines. In this review, we summarize and update the literature on the impacts of TBT on the immune system, and we discuss issues that still need to be explored to fill the knowledge gaps regarding the impact of this endocrine-disrupting chemical on immune system homeostasis.
RESUMO
The synthesis of four pentacoordinated organotin(IV) complexes prepared in a one-pot reaction from 2-hydroxy-1-naphthaldehyde, 2-amino-3-hydroxypyridine and organotin oxides is reported. The complexes were characterized by UV-Vis, IR, MS, 1H, 13C and 119Sn NMR techniques. The compound based on 2,2-diphenyl-6-aza-1,3-dioxa-2-stannanaphtho[1,2-h]pyrido[3,2-d]cyclononene revealed the formation of a monomeric complex with a distorted five-coordinated molecular geometry intermediate between the trigonal bipyramidal and square pyramidal. In order to find possible applications in photovoltaic devices, hybrid films of organotin(IV) complexes embedded in poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) with graphene were deposited. The topographic and mechanical properties were examined. The film with the complex integrated into the cyclohexyl substituent has high plastic deformation, with a maximum stress of 1.69 × 107 Pa and a Knoop hardness of 0.061. The lowest values of 1.85 eV for the onset gap and 3.53 eV for the energy gap were obtained for the heterostructure having the complex with the phenyl substituent. Bulk heterojunction devices were fabricated; these devices showed ohmic behavior at low voltages and a space-charge-limited current (SCLC) conduction mechanism at higher voltages. A value of 0.02 A was found for the maximum carried current. The SCLC mechanism suggests hole mobility values of between 2.62 × 10-2 and 3.63 cm2/V.s and concentrations of thermally excited holes between 2.96 × 1018 and 4.38 × 1018 m-3.
RESUMO
Organotin-based (OTs: TBT and TPT) antifouling paints have been banned worldwide, but recent inputs have been detected in tropical coastal areas. However, there is a lack of studies evaluating the toxicity of both legacy and their substitute antifouling booster biocides (e.g., Irgarol and diuron) on neotropical species. Therefore, the acute toxicity of four antifouling biocides (TBT, TPT, Irgarol, and diuron) was investigated using the marine planktonic organisms Acartia tonsa and Mysidopsis juniae, the estuarine tanaid Monokalliapseudes schubarti (water exposure), and the burrowing amphipod Tiburonella viscana (spiked sediment exposure). Results confirmed the high toxicity of the OTs, especially to planktonic species, being about two orders of magnitude higher than Irgarol and diuron. Toxic effects of antifouling compounds were observed at levels currently found in tropical coastal zones, representing a threat to planktonic and benthic invertebrates. Furthermore, deterministic PNECmarine sediment values suggest that environmental hazards in tropical regions may be higher due to the higher sensitivity of tropical organisms. Since regulations on antifouling biocides are still restricted to a few countries, more ecotoxicological studies are needed to derivate environmental quality standards based on realistic scenarios. The present study brings essential contributions regarding the ecological risks of these substances in tropical and subtropical zones.

The hybrid film of molybdenum oxide (MoO3) and poly(3,4-ethylenedyoxithiophene) polystyrene sulfonate (PEDOT:PSS) is a promising candidate for use as hole transport layer (HTL) in low-cost devices. A fast, controllable and economic process was used to fabricate high-performance HTLs by adding organotin (IV) semiconductors to the MoO3/PEDOT:PSS films. These hybrid films were fabricated by spin-coating and the MoO3/PEDOT:PSS-organotin (IV) complex films were characterized by infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). Some mechanical and optical properties of the hybrid films were obtained and, to electrically characterize the hybrid films, hetero-junction glass/ITO/MoO3/PEDOT:PSS-organotin (IV) complex/Ag devices were prepared. Regarding the mechanical properties, the films have high plastic deformation, with a maximum stress of around 40 MPa and a Knoop hardness of 0.14. With respect to optical behavior, the films showed high transparency, with optical gap values between 2.8 and 3.5 eV and an onset gap of around 2.4 eV, typical of semiconductors. Additionally, the films in their respective devices show ambipolar and ohmic behavior with small differences depending on the substituent in organotin (IV) semiconductors. The MoO3/PEDOT:PSS matrix defines the mechanical behavior of the films and the tin complexes contribute their optoelectronic properties.
RESUMO
The Northern region of the Antarctic Peninsula constitutes the area with the highest human presence in West Antarctica. The human presence, with all the activities associated such as logistic, scientific and tourism operations, represents a potential risk of chemical pollution with both, organic and inorganic contaminants. Under these conditions knowledge about the presence and levels of the main persistent organic pollutants (POPs) is essential to evaluate the environmental status of this ecologically relevant and sensitive area. In this work, which complements our previous study regarding trace elements, we performed the first regional-scale monitoring of 24 PAHs (16 of them included in EPA list of primary pollutant), and organotin compounds (OTCs:TBT, DBT and MBT) in surface sediment from 68 sites comprising six different areas in Maxwell Bay, southeast coast of 25 de Mayo (King George) Island. POPs were quantified in surface sediment samples (20-30 m depth) obtained during two summer Antarctic expeditions by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The two most anthropized areas (South Fildes and Potter Cove) showed moderated evidence of pollution for PAHs and OTC. In some sampling sites the concentration of total PAHs was higher than 100 ng/g dw, while TBT was detected in only five samples, two of them located in Potter Cove (ranged between 14 and 18 ng/g dw), and three, located in South Fildes area (ranged between 118 and 416 ng/g dw). Although POPs contamination was evidenced in some samples close to scientific stations, a pollution pattern was not clearly identified.
RESUMO
The synthesis of four mononuclear heptacoordinated organotin (IV) complexes of mixed ligands derived from tridentated Schiff bases and pyrazinecarboxylic acid is reported. This organotin (IV) complexes were prepared by using a multicomponent reaction, the reaction proceeds in moderate to good yields (64% to 82%). The complexes were characterized by UV-vis spectroscopy, IR spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, 1H, 13C, and 119Sn nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and elemental analysis. The spectroscopic analysis revealed that the tin atom is seven-coordinate in solution and that the carboxyl group acts as monodentate ligand. To determine the effect of the substituent on the optoelectronic properties of the organotin (IV) complexes, thin films were deposited, and the optical bandgap was obtained. A bandgap between 1.88 and 1.98 eV for the pellets and between 1.23 and 1.40 eV for the thin films was obtained. Later, different types of optoelectronic devices with architecture "contacts up/base down" were manufactured and analyzed to compare their electrical behavior. The design was intended to generate a composite based on the synthetized heptacoordinated organotin (IV) complexes embedded on the poly(3,4-ethylenedyoxithiophene)-poly(styrene sulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS). A Schottky curve at low voltages (<1.5 mV) and a current density variation of as much as ~3 × 10-5 A/cm2 at ~1.1 mV was observed. A generated photocurrent was of approximately 10-7 A and a photoconductivity between 4 × 10-9 and 7 × 10-9 S/cm for all the manufactured structures. The structural modifications on organotin (IV) complexes were focused on the electronic nature of the substituents and their ability to contribute to the electronic delocalization via the π system. The presence of the methyl group, a modest electron donor, or the non-substitution on the aromatic ring, has a reduced effect on the electronic properties of the molecule. However, a strong effect in the electronic properties of the material can be inferred from the presence of electron-withdrawing substituents like chlorine, able to reduce the gap energies.
RESUMO
The Sn-Cl chemical bond of four organotin halides (Me3SnCl, Et3SnCl, Bu3SnCl, and Ph3SnCl) was studied by using relativistic density functional theory in combination with a quantitative energy decomposition analysis to explain the formation of charged species. The σ orbital is the dominant contributor to the stabilization of the Sn-Cl bond, and the π-orbital interactions also have a significant contribution to the stabilization of Ph3Sn+ cation when the aromatic groups are bonded to the tin atom. The aromaticity of the phenyl groups delocalizes the positive charge, donating electrons to tin atom by conjugation. Although Me3SnCl and Ph3SnCl are constituted by groups which the size of the substituents is different, the interaction energies obtained with the energy decomposition analysis present similar values, which also occur with the thermodynamic parameters. Graphical abstract Organotin compounds have widely studied as a potential antitumoral agent. The mechanism in triorganotin compounds includes the formation of cation species, R3Sn+. This article studies the influence of the R groups on the rupture of Sn-Cl bond using the fragment analysis and quantitative energy decomposition analysis.
RESUMO
This work provides a preliminary study of the destination, mobility, and availability of tributyltin (TBT), dibutyltin (DBT), and monobutyltin (MBT) in contaminated sediments and water column within Puerto Rosales Port, located in the middle zone of the Bahía Blanca Estuary (Argentina). Therefore, this study presents the first comprehensive results of the role of several physicochemical parameters (temperature, pH, Eh, salinity, turbidity, organic matter, chlorophyll, and macronutrients) in behavior of organotin compounds (OTCs) in a marine-coastal ecosystem. The samples were collected seasonally in May, August, and November during 2014. Levels of OTCs were determined in sediments and water column samples by means of gas chromatography-mass spectrometry analysis. Degradation index analyses suggested not recent inputs of TBT at the area of study. However, results submitted a continuous input of TBT into the column water; further, its distribution and degradation pattern were shown to be influenced by salinity, turbidity, particulate organic matter, chlorophyll, and nitrates. These last two parameters, chlorophyll and nitrates, also were very important for sediment samples. Chlorophyll together with high temperatures recorded in the surface sediments triggers biodegradation process of TBT and DBT resulting in high MBT levels while nitrates seemed to promote debutylation process. Furthermore, pH appeared to influence drastically the adsorption/desorption activity of TBT and DBT in sediment. Finally, the Eh obtained suggested a degradation of TBT thanks to the presence of Fe (III) in this compartment. In addition, in fact, the results outlined a possible MBT additional input that contributes to the pollution observed in the study area. Graphical abstract Organotin compounds behavior according to several physicochemical parameters.

Tributyltin (TBT) is an organotin environmental pollutant widely used as an agricultural and wood biocide and in antifouling paints. Countries began restricting TBT use in the 2000s, but their use continues in some agroindustrial processes. We studied the acute effect of TBT on cardiac function by analyzing myocardial contractility and Ca2+ handling. Cardiac contractility was evaluated in isolated papillary muscle and whole heart upon TBT exposure. Isolated ventricular myocytes were used to measure calcium (Ca2+) transients, sarcoplasmic reticulum (SR) Ca2+ content and SR Ca2+ leak (as Ca2+ sparks). Reactive oxygen species (ROS), as superoxide anion (O2â¢-) was detected at intracellular and mitochondrial myocardium. TBT depressed cardiac contractility and relaxation in papillary muscle and intact whole heart. TBT increased cytosolic, mitochondrial ROS production and decreased mitochondrial membrane potential. In isolated cardiomyocytes TBT decreased both Ca2+ transients and SR Ca2+ content and increased diastolic SR Ca2+ leak. Decay of twitch and caffeine-induced Ca2+ transients were slowed by the presence of TBT. Dantrolene prevented and Tiron limited the reduction in SR Ca2+ content and transients. The environmental contaminant TBT causes cardiotoxicity within minutes, and may be considered hazardous to the mammalian heart. TBT acutely induced a negative inotropic effect in isolated papillary muscle and whole heart, increased arrhythmogenic SR Ca2+ leak leading to reduced SR Ca2+ content and reduced Ca2+ transients. TBT-induced myocardial ROS production, may destabilize the SR Ca2+ release channel RyR2 and reduce SR Ca2+ pump activity as key factors in the TBT-induced negative inotropic and lusitropic effects.

The organotin compounds (OT) are used as fungicides, stabilizers in plastics, miticides, manufacturing and agricultural biocides, wood preservatives and antifouling agents. Tributyltin (TBT) is an OT that was first used for antifouling because it was the most effective agent to prevent undesirable accumulation of marine organisms on solid surfaces, such as ships' hulls or mechanical components, immersed in saltwater. TBT can be easily absorbed by mammals through ingestion, and its cytotoxic effects have become a major concern since their discovery in the 1970s. Recently, it has been demonstrated that TBT exposure is detrimental to the cardiovascular system. TBT is a membrane active substance and its action seems to depend on the OT lipophilicity. As a result, TBT crosses the cell membrane and damages the endothelium and the smooth muscle cells. TBT exposure induces vascular dysfunction, most likely due to endothelial dysfunction and morphological changes in the vascular wall. In an experimental rodent model, small doses of TBT (100 and 500 ng/kg/bw/day for 15 days) modified the vascular reactivity in aorta, mesenteric and coronary arteries followed by smooth muscle cell atrophy, increased collagen deposition and fibrin accumulation. TBT exposure increases oxidative stress by inducing vascular superoxide anion production derived from NADPH oxidase and decreases nitric oxide (NO) production as well as eNOS protein expression. The goal of this review is to summarize the current state of the art regarding the mechanisms involved in the vascular and endothelial dysfunction induced by TBT.
RESUMO
Organotin (OTs) compounds are organometallic compounds that are widely used in industry, such as in the manufacture of plastics, pesticides, paints, and others. OTs are released into the environment by anthropogenic actions, leading to contact with aquatic and terrestrial organisms that occur in animal feeding. Although OTs are degraded environmentally, reports have shown the effects of this contamination over the years because it can affect organisms of different trophic levels. OTs act as endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs), which can lead to several abnormalities in organisms. In male animals, OTs decrease the weights of the testis and epididymis and reduce the spermatid count, among other dysfunctions. In female animals, OTs alter the weights of the ovaries and uteri and induce damage to the ovaries. In addition, OTs prevent fetal implantation and reduce mammalian pregnancy rates. OTs cross the placental barrier and accumulate in the placental and fetal tissues. Exposure to OTs in utero leads to the accumulation of lipid droplets in the Sertoli cells and gonocytes of male offspring in addition to inducing early puberty in females. In both genders, this damage is associated with the imbalance of sex hormones and the modulation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis. Here, we report that OTs act as reproductive disruptors in vertebrate studies; among the compounds are tetrabutyltin, tributyltin chloride, tributyltin acetate, triphenyltin chloride, triphenyltin hydroxide, dibutyltin chloride, dibutyltin dichloride, diphenyltin dichloride, monobutyltin, and azocyclotin.
RESUMO
A series of organotin(IV) derivatives was investigated in vitro for their antibiotic and adjuvant antibiotic properties (efflux pump inhibitors) against Staphylococcus aureus strains that overexpress efflux pump proteins for norfloxacin (SA-1199B), erythromycin (RN-4220) and tetracycline (IS-58). Most organotin(IV) compounds showed significant antibacterial activity with small Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) values, some of which were close to 1.0µg/mL (3.1µM), but this feature was also associated with substantial cytotoxicity. Nevertheless, the cytotoxicity of these organotin(IV) compounds can be overcome when they are used as antibiotic adjuvants. Their remarkable adjuvant antibiotic properties allow potentiation of the action of tetracycline (against IS-58 strain) by up to 128-fold. This likely indicates that they can act as putative inhibitors of bacterial efflux pumps. These results reinforce organotin(IV) complexes as promising antibacterial agents, and many of these complexes, if associated with antibiotics, can act as potential adjuvant antibiotic candidates.

This study represents the first use of Leucozonia nassa (Mollusca-Gastropoda) in a program of long-term monitoring. Specimens of L. nassa were collected between 2006 and 2014 and analyzed for the occurrence of imposex in two areas in Southeastern Brazil, one control area and another characterized by the presence of many ports and marinas. Imposex was evaluated in nine sites based on the percentage of females exhibiting imposex (I%), relative penis length index and vas deferens sequence index, classical indices to evaluate tributyltin (TBT) impacts. Moreover, this study uses for the first time in a tropical environment the ecological quality ratio (EQR), an approach to verify the imposex levels as an indicator of the impact by organotin compounds according to the EU Water Framework Directive. The results confirm the occurrence of high levels of imposex in L. nassa with all the indices evaluated. Furthermore, the results also indicate that, despite the international ban, antifouling paints based on TBT are still possibly used in Brazil. In addition, this study shows that L. nassa has the characteristics that make it a suitable bioindicator to monitor TBT pollution, and that the use of the EQR may create important data regarding this problem.

Organotins (OTs) are organometallic pollutants. The OTs are organometallic pollutants that are used in many industrial, agricultural, and domestic products, and it works as powerful biocidal compound against large types of microorganisms such as fungi and bacteria. In addition, OTs are well known to be endocrine-disrupting chemicals, leading abnormalities an "imposex" phenomenon in the female mollusks. There are some studies showing that OTs' exposure is responsible for neural, endocrine, and reproductive dysfunctions in vitro and in vivo models. However, OTs' effects over the mammalian immune system are poorly understood, particularly in respiratory diseases. The immune system, as well as their cellular components, performs a pivotal role in the control of the several physiologic functions, and in the maintenance and recovery of homeostasis. Thus, it is becoming important to better understand the association between environmental contaminants, as OTs, and the physiological function of immune system. There are no many scientific works studying the relationship between OTs and respiratory disease, especially about immune system activation. Herein, we reported studies in animal, humans, and in vitro models. We searched studies in PUBMED, LILACS, and Scielo platforms. Studies have reported that OTs exposure was able to suppress T helper 1 (Th1) and exacerbate T helper 2 (Th2) response in the immune system. In addition, OTs' contact could elevate in the airway inflammatory response, throughout a mechanism associated with the apoptosis of T-regulatory cells and increased oxidative stress response. In addition, OTs induce macrophage recruitment to the tissue, leading to the increased necrosis, which stimulates an inflammatory cytokines secretion exacerbating the local inflammation and tissue function loss. Thus, the main intention of this mini-review is to up to date the main findings involving the inflammatory profile (especially Th1 and Th2 response) in the respiratory tract as a result of OTs' exposure.

This study investigated the effects of pre- and peripubertal exposure (PND 15-45) to triphenyltin hydroxide (TPT: 0, 1.875, 3.75, 7.5 and 15 mg/kg bw/d po) on mouse sexual maturation and fertility. Half of the mice were euthanized on PND 46 and the remaining mice were submitted to fertility tests on PND 65-75. TPT caused a transient decrease of weight gain at 3.75 mg/kg bw/d, and deaths and body weight deficits at higher doses. Delays of testes descent (TD), vaginal opening (VO) and first estrus (FE) occurred at doses ≥3.75 (TD) and ≥7.5 mg/kg bw/d (VO, FE), respectively. Body weight on the days of TD, VO and FE did not differ among groups. TPT at doses ≥3.75 mg/kg decreased sperm and spermatid counts at the end of treatment (PND 46) but no alteration was noted later on PND 75. Testicular histopathology (PND 46) showed a dose-dependent reduction of seminiferous tubules diameter, a greater degree of vacuolation in Sertoli cells and germ cell degeneration and necrosis in TPT-treated mice. TPT did not affect the outcome of fertility tests. Study-derived NOAEL was 1.875 mg TPT/kg bw/d for males and 3.75 mg TPT/kg bw/d for females. The detrimental effects of TPT on spermatogenesis were reversed after treatment discontinuation.
