Photographic intervention effect on positive and negative affects during COVID-19: Mediating role of future self-continuity.

Meaning in Life (MIL) is a protective factor that buffers the impact of COVID-19 epidemic on emotions. Our study aimed to explore whether photographic intervention based on MIL could increase Positive Affect (PA) and mitigate Negative Affect (NA), and whether Future Self-Continuity (FSC) functioned as a mediator between them. In this study, 90 college students were randomly divided into an intervention group or a control group. Participants in the intervention group were asked to take a photo and describe it every 2 days lasting 2 weeks. All the participants in the two groups were measured by the Meaning in Life Questionnaire, Positive and Negative Affect Scale, and Future Self-Continuity Scale before and after the intervention. The results showed that: (1) Before the intervention, there were no significant differences in baseline levels of MIL, PA and NA, and FSC between intervention and control groups. (2) In the intervention group, compared to pre-test, the scores of MIL, PA, and FSC of post-test increased significantly, and the score of NA of post-test decreased significantly. (3) After the intervention, the scores of MIL, PA, and FSC in the intervention group were significantly higher than those in the control group; NA score in the intervention group was significantly lower than that in the control group. (4) In terms of the difference score (post-test minus pre-test), FSC was a mediator between MIL and PA. Our study demonstrated that photographic intervention could effectively improve college students' MIL, PA, and FSC while mitigating NA. Moreover, MIL could significantly enhance PA by the mediating role of FSC.

A partir da leitura dos estudos de Michel Foucault sobre a ascese como exercício ético e a paraskeué como equipamento deste exercício, traçamos possíveis relações destes elementos teóricos com as estratégias metodológicas propostas pela pesquisa intervenção e pela intervenção fotográfica. A reflexão teórica deste estudo sugere que tais estratégias são condições de possibilidade para que o processo da pesquisa se constitua como um exercício ético. As referências teóricas estão baseadas no livro "A Hermenêutica do Sujeito" de Michel Foucault e em artigos sobre a pesquisa intervenção e a intervenção fotográfica, indicando esta metodologia como um "equipamento" da ascese na pesquisa.(AU)

Based on the Michel Foucault's studies about the ascesis as an ethical exercise and the paraskeué as an instrument of this exercise, the possible relations of these theoretical elements with the methodological strategies proposed by the research's intervention and the photographic intervention were traced. The theoretical thinking of this study suggests that these strategies are possibility conditions for the research's process be constituted as an ethical exercise. The theoretical references are based on the book "The Hermeneutics of the Subject" by Michel Foucault and articles about the intervention research and photographic intervention, designating this methodology as an "instrument" of the research's ascesis.(AU)

Imagens como estratégia metodológica em pesquisa: a fotocomposição e outros caminhos possíveis / Images as a methodological research strategy: photocomposition and other possible approaches

Este texto trata da fotografia como ferramenta de pesquisa em psicologia social, discutindo suas potencialidades na análise dos processos de produção de subjetividade. Para isto, parte-se de uma breve análise dos modos de utilização da fotografia na pesquisa social, tomando como referência a perspectiva metodológica da "intervenção fotográfica" e da "fotocomposição". Esta análise está baseada em dois estudos sobre subjetividade e trabalho, realizados com trabalhadores ligados a programas de geração de renda e de trabalho e com trabalhadores que exercem sua atividade na rua e nas praças da cidade de Porto Alegre, onde a produção de fotografias foi o eixo central das estratégias metodológicas.

This article deals with photography as a research tool in social psychology, discussing its potential in the analysis of the processes underlying the production of subjectivity. For this means, we briefly review some forms of using photography in social research, taking the methodological perspectives of "photographic intervention" and "photocomposition" as references. This analysis is based on two studies on subjectivity and labor, undertaken with individuals working in income and employment generation programs and in the streets and squares of the city of Porto Alegre, respectively, in which the production of photographies was the central methodological strategy.
