RESUMO

The newly-proposed tandem approach, Wire ThRoUgh Snare Twice (Wire TRUST) is effective for grasping a lead with inaccessible ends. This case report shows that Wire TRUST can also enable successful extraction of a left ventricular lead by iteratively grasping and repositioning to the distal portion of the lead.

A 47-year-old male, a known case of alcoholic chronic liver disease with portal hypertension, presented with complaints of abdominal distension and shortness of breath. A provisional diagnosis of ethanol-related compensated chronic liver disease (CLD) with portal hypertension and splenomegaly, gross ascites with bilateral hepatic hydrothorax was made. The left-sided pleural effusion subsided after three pleural taps, but the right-sided effusion kept refilling even after four to five days of repeated therapeutic taps, so a pigtail catheter was left in situ. The pleural fluid was sent for culture which did not grow any pathogenic organisms. Cartridge-based nucleic acid amplification tests where Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex (MTBC) was not detected, Ziehl-Neelsen staining was done in which acid-fast bacilli were not seen, and cytology was done where no malignant cells were seen. The patient was discharged with the pigtail in situ on the right side and, after 20 days, the patient again presented with shortness of breath, and imaging revealed moderate right-side pleural effusion. Draining of pleural fluid was done and sent for investigation which again revealed no infective etiology. The patient was admitted to the hospital for one month as the right-sided effusion did not resolve. Suddenly, the patient developed shortness of breath, and a chest X-ray was done, which showed pigtail blockage; pigtail flushing was done, and the bag was drained. The patient was empirically started on IV meropenem 500 mg TID, IV teicoplanin 400 mg BD, and inj polymyxin B 500,000 IU IV BD. The pleural fluid was sent continuously for investigation for the first two months which again did not reveal any infective etiology. After two months of pigtail in situ, the pleural fluid was sent for CBNAAT where MTBC was not detected, and ZN stain showed smooth acid-fast bacilli. The sample was cultured, and it grew acid-fast bacilli in 72 hours on blood agar, MacConkey agar, and Lowenstein-Jensen media. A line probe assay done from the isolate revealed it to be Mycobacterium abscessus subsp. abscessus which was resistant to macrolides and sensitive to aminoglycosides. Mycobacterium abscessus subsp. abscessus was isolated from repeated cultures of pleural fluid, and the patient was advised on a combination treatment of amikacin, tigecycline, and imipenem. The patient was discharged with the indwelling pigtail with the advised treatment; unfortunately, we lost patient follow-up as the patient never returned to us.

BACKGROUND: The pigtail was used to create an opening at the lower punctal site in grade 0 stenosis with insertion of self-retaining tube and Mitomycin C (MMC). METHODS: The patients with acquired lower punctal stenosis (grade 0) were divided randomly into equal groups, Group A: were treated with pigtail and MMC 0.02% and Group B: were treated with pigtail alone. The pigtail was inserted through the upper punctum until its tip reached the occluded punctum, this site was incised with a scalpel (No. 11). A self-retaining bicanalicular tube was then placed. RESULTS: Results of 36 eyes from 26 patients were included. No differences were observed between both groups regarding epiphora score, FDD test and punctal size preoperatively. The postoperative epiphora score, there were significant differences at 1 month (P = 0.035), 3 months (P = 0.005), and 6 months after removal (P < 0.001). The FDD test, there were significant differences at 6 months (P = 0.045), 1 month (P = 0.021), 3 months (P = 0.012), and 6 months post tube removal (P = 0.005). The punctal size, both groups differed at 1 month (P = 0.045), 3 months (P = 0.03), and 6 months post tube removal (P = 0.005). Only one case (5.5%) at each group showed extrusion of the tube. CONCLUSION: The pigtail probe, bicanalicular stent and MMC can be an effective method in treatment of severe punctal stenosis.

BACKGROUND: Alopecia areata is a chronic and relapsing condition that affects individuals of all age groups. Dermoscopy is a popular and non-invasive method for diagnosing alopecia areata. This study aimed to analyze dermoscopic findings and their relationship with age, gender, appearance, and clinical signs in children and adults. METHODS: This retrospective cross-sectional study was conducted on 124 children and adults diagnosed with alopecia areata who were referred to a Hospital in Iran between 2021 and 2022. After reaching the calculated sample size, trichoscopic findings were examined and the results were recorded. Data analysis was performed by a statistician and presented in relevant tables. RESULTS: The participants in the study comprised 53.2% female children, 46.8% male children, 27.42% adult males, and 72.58% adult females. The median age in the pediatric group was 10 years, while it was 27 years in the adult group. Yellow dots were significantly less observed in children than in adults (29% vs. 48.4%), while exclamation mark hairs were significantly more common in children than adults (38.7% vs. 21%). No significant differences were found in the frequency of other trichoscopic features between children and adults. Specifically, black dots, broken hairs, short vellus hairs, pigtail hairs, and empty follicular openings were observed in 38.7%, 40.3%, 32.3%, 11.3%, and 75.8% of children, respectively, and in 35.5%, 32.3%, 21%, 46.8%, and 12.9% of adults, respectively. CONCLUSION: The most common trichoscopic findings in alopecia areata in children are empty follicular openings and broken hairs, while exclamation mark hairs are more common in children than adults. In contrast, yellow dots are less frequently observed in children compared to adults. This distinct difference between children's and adults' dermoscopic findings highlights the critical need for age-specific considerations in AA evaluations.

The presence of a pneumothorax within a pressurized chamber represents unique diagnostic and management challenges. This is particularly the case in the medical and geographic remoteness of many chamber locations. Upon commencing chamber decompression, unvented intrapleural air expands. If its initial volume and/or degree of chamber pressure reduction is significant enough, a tension pneumothorax will result. Numerous reports chronicle failure to diagnose and manage in-chamber pneumothorax with resultant morbidity and one fatal outcome. Such cases have occurred in both medically remote and clinically based settings. This paper reviews pneumothorax and tension pneumothorax risk factors and clinical characteristics. It suggests primary medical management using the principle of oxygen-induced inherent unsaturation in concert with titrated chamber decompression designed to prevent intrapleural air expanding faster than it contracts. Should this conservative approach prove unsuccessful, and surgical venting becomes necessary or otherwise immediately indicated, interventional options are reviewed.

Objective: Double-J (DJ) ureteric stents are commonly placed perioperatively for semirigid or flexible ureteroscopic renal surgery. It is believed that lesser stent material within the bladder mitigates stent-related symptoms. This study aimed to evaluate the J-Fil ureteral stent, a single pigtail suture stent compared with conventional DJ stent in relation to stent symptoms in an Asian population undergoing ureterorenal intervention. Methods: Based on internal audit committee recommendation approval, the records of 50 patients retrieved, available data of 41 patients who were prospectively enrolled into two groups (Group 1 [J-Fil stent group], n=21 and Group 2 [DJ stent group], n=20) between August 2020 to January 2021, were analysed. Parameters compared were nature of procedure, stone location and size, ease of deployment or removal, and complications. A modified universal stent symptom questionnaire was used to assess morbidity of stent symptoms within 48 h of insertion and at removal. Results: Both groups had similar median age, distribution in male to female ratio, and stone size. The overall median universal stent symptom questionnaire score at insertion was similar for bladder pain, flank or loin pain, and quality of life between Group 1 and 2; however, at removal Group 1 fared significantly better than Group 2, especially for flank or loin pain and pain at voiding. Both groups had similar ease in insertion with no hospital readmissions. Conclusion: Our audit favoured the single pigtail suture stent in Asian ureters in mitigating stent-related issues. It showed a good safety profile with easy deployment and removal. It promises a new standard in stenting.

Background: Pyogenic liver abscess (PLA) is a potentially life-threatening intra-abdominal infection. We compared the clinical features, treatments, and prognoses of patients who had Klebsiella pneumonia pyogenic liver abscess (KPPLA) and non-Klebsiella pneumonia pyogenic liver abscess (non-KPPLA). Methods: A retrospective analysis was used to compare the medical records of KPPLA and non-KPPLA patients with positive pus cultures at a single hospital in China from January 2017 to December 2019. Results: We examined 279 patients with definitively established PLA, 207 (74.2 %) with KPPLA, and 72 with non-KPPLA. The non-KPPLA group had a higher Charlson comorbidity index, longer hospital stay, longer duration of fever, and greater hospital costs. Multivariate analysis showed that alcohol intake (OR: 2.44, P = 0.048), cancer (OR: 4.80, P = 0.001), ICU admission (OR: 10.61, P = 0.026), resolution of fever OR: 1.04, P = 0.020), and a positive blood culture (OR: 2.87, P = 0.029) were independent predictors of primary treatment failure. Percutaneous needle aspiration (PNA) and pigtail catheter drainage (PCD) provided satisfactory outcomes, but PNA led to shorter hospital stays and reduced costs, especially in KPPLA patients whose abscesses were smaller than 10 cm. Conclusion: KPPLA and non-KPPLA patients had some differences in comorbidities and treatment strategies, and non-KPPLA patients had a significantly worse prognosis.

Background: Endoscopic ultrasound (EUS)-guided lumen-apposing metal stents (LAMS) are preferred for draining symptomatic large pancreatic fluid collections (PFCs). A concurrent coaxial double-pigtail plastic stent (DPPS) is proposed to reduce adverse events associated with LAMS. We aimed to perform a comparative outcome analysis of LAMS with or without DPPS for PFCs. Methods: Electronic databases from January 2005 through July 2023 were searched for studies comparing the use of LAMS with or without DPPS for PFCs. Pooled proportions were calculated using fixed (inverse variance) and random-effects (DerSimonian-Laird) models. Results: After reviewing 1780 studies, we extracted data from 6 studies comprising 348 patients. The weighted odds of overall technical success, using LAMS plus DPPS compared to LAMS alone, were 0.53 (95% confidence interval [CI] 0.15-1.83), and the odds of clinical success were 1.10 (95%CI 0.59-2.05). The weighted odds of total adverse events with LAMS compared to LAMS plus DPPS were 2.21 (95%CI 1.37-3.59). Analysis of individual adverse events showed that the odds of stent occlusion when LAMS alone was used compared to LAMS plus DPPS was 2.36 (95%CI 1.12-4.98). The odds of bleeding were 1.84 (95%CI 0.77-4.38), and the odds of stent migration 0.95 (95%CI 0.40-2.23). Conclusions: EUS-guided LAMS placement is the current standard of care for managing symptomatic large PFCs. Concurrent use of coaxial DPPS can mitigate the overall adverse events observed with LAMS, while maintaining similar technical and clinical success.

Liver abscess secondary to a migrated foreign body (fish bone) is a rare entity where early diagnosis helps in management and thereby improves the prognosis. We present a unique case of a 47-year-old hypertensive man who presented with high-grade fever, chills, rigors, and abdominal pain. On evaluation, he was found to have a liver abscess secondary to a foreign body (fish bone), although no history of foreign body ingestion was recalled by the patient. Drainage of liver abscess and removal of the foreign body comprise the treatment of choice. We report the successful management of a patient with liver abscess from a migrated fish bone. This case underscores the importance of considering foreign body ingestion as a potential cause of liver abscess, even when patients cannot recall such an event. Timely diagnosis and intervention, along with advances in imaging techniques, contribute to successful outcomes in these rare but challenging cases.

PURPOSE: To compare stent-related symptoms (SRS) in patients with double J (DJ) undergoing substitution with a pigtail suture stent (PSS) after ureteroscopy (URS), through the Ureteral Stent Symptom Questionnaire (USSQ). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Patients with DJ undergoing URS for stone treatment were enrolled in this prospective multicenter longitudinal study. The USSQ was submitted thrice: 2 weeks after DJ, 2 weeks after PSS and 4 weeks after PSS removal (baseline). PRIMARY ENDPOINT: to compare Urinary Symptom Index Score and the rate of patients with pain 2 weeks after DJ and PSS. Secondary endpoints: to compare other USSQ scores and single answers 2 weeks after DJ and PSS, and DJ and PSS USSQ scores with baseline. RESULTS: 93 patients were enrolled. 2 weeks Urinary Symptom Index Score (p < 0.001) and the percentage of patients complaining of pain (60.2% vs 88.2%, p < 0.001) were significantly in favour of PSS compared to DJ. 2 weeks scores were significantly improved with PSS compared to DJ: Pain Index (p < 0.001), VAS (p < 0.001), General Health Index (p < 0.001) and Work Performance Index (p < 0.001). All urinary symptoms were significantly decreased with PSS, including renal pain during micturition and pain interfering with life. Pain Index Score (p = 0.622) and VAS (p = 0.169) were comparable to baseline with PSS, while differed with DJ. CONCLUSIONS: Patients undergoing DJ substitution with PSS after URS report a significant decrease of SRS. Urologists may consider positioning PSS after URS in pre-stented patients to reduce the impact of SRS.

Pancreatic fluid collections (PFCs) are well-known complications of acute pancreatitis. The overinfection of these collections leads to a worsening of the prognosis with an increase in the morbidity and mortality rate. The primary strategy for managing infected pancreatic necrosis (IPN) or symptomatic PFCs is a minimally invasive step-up approach, with endosonography-guided (EUS-guided) transmural drainage and debridement as the preferred and less invasive method. Different stents are available to drain PFCs: self-expandable metal stents (SEMSs), double pigtail stents (DPPSs), or lumen-apposing metal stents (LAMSs). In particular, LAMSs are useful when direct endoscopic necrosectomy is needed, as they allow easy access to the necrotic cavity; however, the rate of adverse events is not negligible, and to date, the superiority over DPPSs is still debated. Moreover, the timing for necrosectomy, the drainage technique, and the concurrent medical management are still debated. In this review, we focus attention on indications, timing, techniques, complications, and particularly on aspects that remain under debate concerning the EUS-guided drainage of PFCs.

Subcutaneous emphysema is a type of air leak in which air accumulates within the subcutaneous layer of the skin underneath the dermal layers. The accumulation of air can be seen on imaging in relevant body areas such as the abdomen, chest, face, or neck. During physical examination, crepitus, the sensation or sound of crackling upon palpation, is the most common associated finding. Various causes for subcutaneous emphysema exist, with one such cause being thoracostomy or chest tube placement. The trocar technique, in particular, has been associated with greater complications when compared to other techniques. Here, we present a case of subcutaneous emphysema in a neonate occurring after placement of a chest tube using the trocar technique. At this time, much of the knowledge regarding subcutaneous emphysema related to chest tube placement is in the adult population. Clinicians should be aware of this complication in neonates as the body of knowledge regarding this topic continues to grow.

RESUMO

A percutaneous cholecystostomy tube (PCT) is the conventionally favored nonoperative intervention for treating acute cholecystitis. However, PCT is beset by high adverse event rates, need for scheduled reintervention, and inadvertent dislodgement, as well as patient dissatisfaction with a percutaneous drain. Recent advances in endoscopic therapy involve the implementation of endoscopic transpapillary drainage (ETP-GBD) and endoscopic ultrasound-guided gallbladder drainage (EUS-GBD), which are increasingly preferred over PCT due to their favorable technical and clinical success combined with lower complication rates. In this article, we provide a comprehensive review of the literature on EUS-GBD and ETP-GBD, delineating instances when clinicians should opt for endoscopic management and highlighting potential risks associated with each approach.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the results of using a pigtail probe to open the inferior punctum followed by bicanalicular silicone tube intubation in patients with severe acquired punctal stenosis. METHODS: Forty-one eyes of 25 patients with severe inferior punctal stenosis admitted to our tertiary care center were included in the study. The degree of epiphora was determined using the Munk score and the fluorescein disappearance test. The inferior punctum was located and opened by entering the superior punctum with a pigtail probe. Then, bicanalicular silicone tube intubation was performed. The silicone tube was removed after six months. A Munk score of 0 or 1 and a fluorescein disappearance test score of 1 and 2 were considered a complete success. RESULTS: Ten (40%) patients were male, and 15 (60%) were female. The mean age was 60.4±15.5years. One year after the surgery, epiphora was absent in 18 eyes (43.9%) (Munk score grade 0) and rarely seen in 9 eyes (22%) (Munk score grade 1). At the one-year follow-up, the fluorescein disappearance test score was stage 1 (<3min) in 21 eyes (51.2%) and stage 2 (3-5min) in 13 eyes (31.7%). There was a statistically significant difference between the preoperative and one-year postoperative test results (P<0.001). CONCLUSION: In cases with severe punctal stenosis, a pigtail probe is an effective method for locating and opening the punctum, and punctal opening and prevention of restenosis were achieved by a bicanalicular stent.

Background: Disconnected pancreatic duct syndrome (DPDS) is a common cause of recurrent pancreatic fluid collections (PFCs), often requiring repeat drainage. Following initial drainage with lumen apposing metal stents (LAMS), replacement with transmural double pigtail stents (DPS) has been shown to be a viable drainage modality mitigating the risk of recurrence. The sparsity of literature on the consequences of this strategy requires further investigation. We analyze our outcomes of long-term transmural drainage with DPS in patients with DPDS and assess the safety and efficacy of this technique. Methods: This retrospective review of a prospectively maintained database from November 2015-May 2022 included all patients with DPDS who underwent removal of LAMS and replacement with long-term transmural DPS. Patient demographics, collection characteristics, drainage technique and outcomes, as well as follow-up data was collected and analyzed using descriptive statistics. Results: There were 139 patients who underwent endoscopic drainage of PFCs with LAMS during the study period. Seventy-eight patients [walled-off necrosis (n=65) and pseudocysts (n=13)] were found to have DPDS. Of these, 44 patients underwent successful LAMS removal followed by replacement with DPS and were included in the analysis. The median age was 57 years and 14 (32%) were female. The median stent dwell time was 394 days [interquartile range (IQR) 245, 853 days]. Spontaneous stent migration was seen in seven patients (16%), one of whom developed a PFC recurrence which was managed conservatively. The second recurrence was seen in a patient with indwelling DPS which did not require further intervention. There were no locoregional adverse events secondary to long-term indwelling DPS. Among the 28 patients who were followed for a year, three patients developed new-onset diabetes, and chronic pancreatitis (CP) changes in the disconnected segment were seen in eight patients, five of whom required pancreatic enzyme supplementation. Conclusions: Placement of long-term transmural DPS is an effective modality for preventing collection re-accumulation with a favorable safety profile. Randomized prospective studies are essential to investigate the optimal removal timing of indwelling stents to prevent loco-regional complications. Given the realized risk of CP in the disconnected pancreas, follow-up cross sectional imaging may help guide further therapy.

OBJECTIVES: Chest tube (CT) drainage is a main cause of postoperative pain in lung surgery. Here, we introduced a novel drainage strategy with bi-pigtail catheters (PCs) and conducted a randomized controlled trial to compare with conventional CT drainage after uniportal video-assisted thoracic surgery lung surgery. METHODS: A single-centre, prospective, open-labelled, randomized controlled trial (ChiCTR2000035337) was conducted with a preplanned sample size of 396. The primary outcome was the numerical pain rating scale (NPRS) on the first postoperative day. Secondary outcomes included other indicators of postoperative pain, drainage volume, duration of drainage, postoperative hospital stay, incidence of postoperative complications, CT reinsertion and medical costs. RESULTS: A total number of 396 patients were randomized between August 2020 and January 2021, 387 of whom were included in the final analysis. The baseline and clinical characteristics of the patients were well balanced between 2 groups. The NPRS on the first postoperative day was significantly lower in the PC group than in the CT group (2.40 ± 1.27 vs 3.02 ± 1.39, p < 0.001), as well as the second/third-day NPRS, the incidence of sudden severe pain (9/192, 4.7% vs 34/195, 17.4%, P < 0.001) and pain requiring intervention (19/192, 9.9% vs 46/195, 23.6%, P < 0.001). In addition, the medical cost in the PC group was lower (US$7809 ± 1646 vs US$8205 ± 1815, P = 0.025). Univariable and multivariable analyses revealed that the drainage strategy was the only factor influencing the incidence of pain requiring intervention. CONCLUSIONS: The drainage strategy with bi-PCs in patients undergoing uniportal video-assisted thoracic surgery lung surgery alleviates postoperative pain with adequate safety and efficacy.

PURPOSE: Tension pneumomediastinum is a rare and dangerous complication in children that can be fatal, and timely detection and treatment are critical. The aim of this study was to evaluate the safety and feasibility of computed tomography (CT) imaging-guided parasternal approach drainage for tension pneumomediastinum in children. METHODS: From June 2018 to February 2023, we consecutively enrolled 19 children with tension pneumomediastinum in our institution. A pigtail catheter was inserted into the anterior mediastinum by a CT imaging-guided parasternal approach. The catheter was connected to a negative-pressure water seal bottle to drain the pneumomediastinum. Clinical data and outcomes were summarized. RESULTS: The mean age was 3.1 ± 3.4 years, the mean weight was 15 ± 9.1 kg, the mean procedure time was 11.8 ± 2.4 min, and the drainage time was 6.7 ± 3.4 days. No major complications were identified, such as haemothorax, catheter displacement, or mediastinal infection. Effective drainage was obtained in all patients as assessed by comparing images and ventilatory parameters, and no additional surgical treatment was needed. There was no recurrence during the follow-up, which was more than 2 months. In our data, two children with COVID-19 were discharged from the hospital after effective drainage and other clinical treatment. CONCLUSION: CT-guided parasternal approach drainage is safe, minimally invasive, and effective for children with tension pneumomediastinum.

Amoebic liver abscess is one frequently encountered intra-abdominal infection, caused by Entamoeba histolytica and has various abdominal and thoracic life-threatening complications. Herein, describe a case of a 30-year-old female, who suffered from multiple amoebic liver abscesses and presented with massive right-sided pleural effusion. She was managed with recommended antibiotics and pigtail catheter for liver abscess and an intercostal drainage tube for massive pleural effusion. However, postintercostal drainage, her chest X-ray demonstrated a right mediastinal shadow, which was confirmed as an intrathoracic extension of the hepatic liver abscess on computed tomography. An ultrasound-guided pigtail catheter was manipulated and placed at the site of thoracic communication. This led to clinical and radiological improvement, but unfortunately, she developed ventilator-acquired pneumonia and died due to her illness. The case represents an uncommon complication of amoebic liver abscess, which is rarely described and adds more knowledge on the thoracic complexities of this infectious disease.

INTRODUCTION: The use of antibiotic prophylaxis in invasive procedures is generally accepted and highly recommended. The question is the need to apply antibiotic prophylaxis even in the case of mini-invasive procedures in the post-transplantation period. The aim of the study was to dermine the occurrence of infectious complications during mini-invasive procedures (pig-tail extraction, protocol biopsy) withou the use of antibiotic (ATB) prophylaxis. The secondary aim was to identify risk factors for a positive urine culture finding at the time of mini-invasive procedures. MATERIAL: This is a prospective monocentric study in which pacients after kidney transplantation at Transplantation centrum in Martin were included (n = 68). We investigated the incidence of positive urine findings at the time of pig-tail extraction (6 weeks after transplantation) and at the time of protocol biopsy (3 months after transplantation) with comparison within the group with and without ATB prophylaxis. RESULTS: Patients in group without ATB prophylaxis had a significantly higher tacrolimus value at the time of pig-tail extraction (p = 0.0274) and a significantly higher dose of mycophenolic acid at the time of protocol biopsy (p = 0.0429). We did not confirm significant difference in occcurence of positive urine findings at the time of pig-tail extraction or at the time of protocol biopsy. We completed a univariate logistic regression in order to identify a potential risk predictor for positive urine findings at the time of pig-tail extraction and protocol biopsy. None of the monitored parameters, including ATB prophylaxis, was confirmed as risk or protective factor. CONCLUSION: The use of antibiotic prophylaxis during mini-invasive procedures (pig-tail extraction, protocol biopsy) in the posttransplantation period had no effect on positive culture findings at our department. Based on our analysis, we therefore do not use antibiotic prophylaxis in the case of these procedures at our centre (Tab. 3, Fig. 6, Ref. 23).

Demand for nonhuman primates in research has increased over the past several years, while nonhuman primate supply remains a challenge in the United States. Global nonhuman primate supply issues make it increasingly important to maximize domestic colony production. To explore how housing conditions across primate breeding colonies impact infant survival and animal production more broadly, we collected medical records from 7959 rhesus macaques (Macaca mulatta) and 492 pigtail macaques (Macaca nemestrina) across seven breeding facilities and used generalized mixed-effect modeling to determine prenatal and infant survival odds by housing type and group size. Infant survival odds for each housing type and group size varied for prenatal, neonatal, early infant, and late infant age groups. Odds of prenatal survival were lowest in paired indoor housing and small and medium outdoor groups. No housing type performed better than large outdoor groups for neonatal survival. Odds of early infant survival was greatest in indoor and mixed indoor/outdoor housing compared to large outdoor enclosures. Large outdoor housing was associated with higher survival odds for late infant survival compared to small and medium outdoor housing. These results may influence housing choices at macaque breeding facilities hoping to maximize infant success, although there are relative care costs, the promotion of species-typical behaviors, and infrastructure factors to also consider. Our study used an interinstitutional collaboration that allowed for the analysis of more infant macaque medical records than ever before and used the broad variations across the seven national primate research centers to make the results applicable to many other facilities housing macaques.
