The bacterial composition of and the circulation of antimicrobial resistance genes (ARGs) in waste from Brazilian swine farms are still poorly understood. Considering that antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is one of the main threats to human, animal, and environmental health, the need to accurately assess the load of ARGs released into the environment is urgent. Therefore, this study aimed to characterize the microbiota in a swine farm in southern Brazil and the resistome in swine farm wastewater treated in a series of waste stabilization ponds (WSPs). Samples were collected from farm facilities and the surrounding environment, representing all levels of swine manure within the treatment system. Total metagenomic sequencing was performed on samples from WSPs, and 16S-rDNA sequencing was performed on all the collected samples. The results showed increased bacterial diversity in WSPs, characterized by the presence of Caldatribacteriota, Cloacimonadota, Desulfobacterota, Spirochaetota, Synergistota, and Verrucomicrobiota. Furthermore, resistance genes to tetracyclines, lincosamides, macrolides, rifamycin, phenicol, and genes conferring multidrug resistance were detected in WSPs samples. Interestingly, the most abundant ARG was linG, which confers resistance to the lincosamides. Notably, genes conferring macrolide (mphG and mefC) and rifamycin (rpoB_RIF) resistance appeared in greater numbers in the late WSPs. These drugs are among the high-priority antibiotic classes for human health. Moreover, certain mobile genetic elements (MGEs) were identified in the samples, notably tnpA, which was found in high abundance. These elements are of particular concern due to their potential to facilitate the dissemination of ARGs among bacteria. In summary, the results indicate that, in the studied farm, the swine manure treatment system could not eliminate ARGs and MGEs. Our results validate concerns about Brazil's swine production system. The misuse and overuse of antimicrobials during animal production must be avoided to mitigate AMR.

Biological treatment of swine liquid manure may be a favorable environment for the enrichment of bacteria carrying antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), raising the alert about this public health problem. The present work sought to investigate the performance of a swine wastewater treatment plant (SWWTP), composed of a covered lagoon biodigester (CLB) followed by three facultative ponds, in the removal of usual pollutants, antibiotics, ARGs (blaTEM, ermB, qnrB, sul1, and tetA), and intI1. The SWWTP promoted a 70% of organic matter removal, mainly by the digester unit. The facultative ponds stood out in the solids' retention carried from the anaerobic stage and contributed to ammonia volatilization. The detected antibiotic in the raw wastewater was norfloxacin (< 0.79 to 60.55 µg L-1), and the SWWTP seems to equalize peaks of norfloxacin variation probably due to sludge adsorption. CLB reduced the absolute abundance of ARGs by up to 2.5 log, while the facultative stage does not seem to improve the quality of the final effluent in terms of resistance elements. Considering the relative abundances, the reduction rates of total and ARG-carrying bacteria appear to be similar. Finally, correlation tests also revealed that organic matter and solids control in liquid manure treatment systems could help reduce the spread of ARGs after the waste final disposal.

El objetivo del estudio fue realizar la caracterización bioinformática, así como optimizar la producción de L-asparaginasa extracelular de Bacillus sp. M62 aislada de las salinas de Maras (Cusco). Para ello, se verificó la producción de L-asparaginasa mediante el viraje del medio M9 modificado con azul de bromofenol 0.0075%, pH 7.4 a 37 °C por 72 h. A la vez, se extrajo el ADN genómico para amplificar los genes ribosómicos 16S y el gen ansA3. La secuencia aminoacídica codificada por el gen ansA3 se predijo mediante análisis bioinformático. La producción de L-asparaginasa intracelular y extracelular se evaluó a diferentes niveles de glucosa, L-asparagina, NaCl y pH en el medio M9 modificado. Adicionalmente, las actividades enzimáticas de L-asparaginasa y L-glutaminasa se determinaron mediante cuantificación del amonio liberado por el método de Nessler. Así, Bacillus sp. M62 produjo el viraje del medio M9 modificado, obtuvo alta similitud y cercanía evolutiva con Bacillus licheniformis, se encontró que el gen ansA3 amplificado codificaba para 319 aa, dentro de la cual se predijo una secuencia patrón del sitio activo (GFVITHGTDTM ) y 15 sitios inmunogénicos. La producción de L-asparaginasa extracelular fue superior a la intracelular, la que se optimizó de 0.37 U/mL (0.24 U/mg) a 2.15 ± 0.39 U/mL (0.63 U/mg). Finalmente, se encontró que Bacillus sp. M62 presenta L-asparaginasa extracelular con mínima actividad de L-glutaminasa.


The aim of this study was to perform bioinformatics characterization and optimize the production of extracellular L-asparaginase from Bacillus sp. M62, isolated from the Maras salt ponds (Cusco). To achieve this, the production of L-asparaginase was verified by the change in color of modified M9 medium, containing 0.0075% bromophenol blue, at pH 7.4 and 37°C for 72 hours. Genomic DNA was extracted to amplify the 16S ribosomal genes and the ansA3 gene. The amino acid sequence encoded by the ansA3 gene was predicted using bioinformatic analysis. The production of intracellular and extracellular L-asparaginase was evaluated at different levels of glucose, L-asparagine, NaCl, and pH in modified M9 medium. Additionally, the enzymatic activities of L-asparaginase and L-glutaminase were determined by quantifying the released ammonium using the Nessler method. Bacillus sp. M62 showed the change in color of the modified M9 medium, high similarity, and evolutionary closeness to Bacillus licheniformis. The amplified ansA3 gene was found to encode for 319 amino acids, with a predicted active site pattern (GFVITHGTDTM) and 15 immunogenic sites. The production of extracellular L-asparaginase was found to be higher than intracellular L-asparaginase and was optimized from 0.37 U/mL (0.24 U/mg) to 2.15 ± 0.39 U/mL (0.63 U/mg). Finally, it was found that Bacillus sp. M62 presents extracellular L-asparaginase with minimal L-glutaminase activity.

This work studied the formation of aggregates used for wastewater treatment in high-rate algal ponds (HRAP). For this, the establishment of microalgae-bacteria aggregates in these systems was evaluated, considering strategies for the inoculation and start-up. Two HRAP were operated in parallel, at first in batch mode and then in continuous flow. The wastewater treatment was efficient, with removal rates around 80% for COD and N-ammoniacal. Volatile suspended solids and chlorophyll for the culture grew continuously reached a concentration of 548 ± 11 mg L-1 and 7.8 mg L-1, respectively. Larger photogranules were observed when the system was placed in a continuous regime. The protein fraction of extracellular polymeric substances was identified as a determinant in photogranules formation. During the continuous regime, more than 50% of the biomass was higher than 0.2 mm, flocculation efficiency of 78 ± 6%, and the volumetric sludge index of 32 ± 5 mL g-1. The genetic sequencing showed the growth of cyanobacteria in the aggregate and the presence of microalgae from the chlorophytes and diatoms groups in the final biomass.

Global demand for crops will continue increasing over the next few decades to cover both food and biofuel needs. This demand will put further pressure to expand arable land and replace natural habitats. However, we are only beginning to understand the combined effects of agrochemicals and land-use change on tropical freshwater biodiversity. In this study, we analyzed how pond-dwelling anuran larvae responded to pond characteristics, landscape composition, and agrochemical contamination in a sugarcane-dominated agroecosystem in Brazil. Then we used an information theoretical approach with generalized linear models to relate species richness and abundance to predictor variables. The variation in tadpole abundance was associated with both agrochemical concentration (e.g., ametryn, diuron, and malathion) and landscape variables (e.g., percentage of forest, percentage of agriculture, and distance to closest forest). The relationship between species abundance and agrochemicals was species-specific. For example, the abundances of Scinax fuscovarius and Physalaemus nattereri were negatively associated with ametryn, and Dendropsophus nanus was negatively associated with tebuthiuron, whereas that of Leptodactylus fuscus was positively associated with malathion. Conversely, species richness was associated with distance to forest fragments and aquatic vegetation heterogeneity, but not agrochemicals. Although we were unable to assign a specific mechanism to the variation in tadpole abundance based on field observations, the lower abundance of three species in ponds with high concentrations of agrochemicals suggest they negatively impact some frog species inhabiting agroecosystems. We recommend conserving ponds near forest fragments, with abundant stratified vegetation, and far from agrochemical runoffs to safeguard more sensitive pond-breeding species.

Annual fish live exclusively in temporary wetlands and are among the shortest-lived vertebrates in the world. These fish persist in these habitats due to drought-resistant eggs, that which, through diapauses are able to detect stimuli from the environment to start the development processes. They are also able to direct their embryonic development in different trajectories with different development times. Our objective in this paper was to describe the different stages of embryonic development of Austrolebias wolterstorffi, a critically endangered annual fish. A total of 27 stages of embryonic development were identified for the two observed developmental pathways (direct and diapause 2). Of these 27 developmental stages observed, 24 were identical between the two types of trajectories and three different. A total of 90% of the embryos that completed their development proceeded normally, without pauses. One embryo had a different development from the others, entering diapause 2, with a pause in development for 48 h. Although the embryonic development of A. wolterstorffi is similar to that of other Neotropical annual fish species, the diapause 2 occurs when the embryo has a large body size and a well-developed brain, indicating that the lack of embryonic information of the genus Austrolebias may hide characteristics still undescribed or even different survival strategies than what has been observed for other annual fish.


Os peixes anuais vivem exclusivamente em áreas úmidas temporárias e estão entre os vertebrados de vida mais curta do mundo. Esses peixes persistem nesses habitats devido a ovos resistentes à seca, que, por meio de diapausas, são capazes de detectar estímulos do ambiente para iniciar os processos de desenvolvimento embrionário. Eles também são capazes de direcionar seu desenvolvimento embrionário em diferentes trajetórias com diferentes tempos de desenvolvimento. O objetivo deste trabalho foi descrever os diferentes estágios do desenvolvimento embrionário de Austrolebias wolterstorffi, um peixe anual criticamente ameaçado. Um total de 27 estágios de desenvolvimento embrionário foram identificados para as duas trajetórias de desenvolvimento observadas (direto e diapausa 2). Desses 27 estágios de desenvolvimento observados, 24 eram idênticos entre os dois tipos de trajetórias e três diferentes. Um total de 90% dos embriões que completaram seu desenvolvimento seguiu normalmente, sem pausas. Um embrião teve um desenvolvimento diferente dos demais, entrando na diapausa 2, com pausa no desenvolvimento de 48h. Embora o desenvolvimento embrionário de A. wolterstorffi seja semelhante ao de outras espécies de peixes anuais neotropicais, a diapausa 2 ocorre quando o embrião tem um corpo grande e um cérebro bem desenvolvido, indicando que a falta de informação embrionária do gênero Austrolebias pode escondem características ainda não descritas ou mesmo estratégias de sobrevivência diferentes das observadas para outros peixes anuais.

A nivel mundial, el 44% de las aguas residuales domésticas no se tratan de forma segura, la recolección y tratamiento de aguas residuales, se ha convertido en un desafío, particularmente en áreas urbanas de bajos ingresos dentro de los países en desarrollo, donde las aguas residuales pueden fluir sin tratar a transportes de aguas pluviales o canales de drenaje informales. No es raro encontrar efluentes, desechos sólidos, excretas humanas y descargas líquidas de industrias y hospitales en las aguas superficiales de muchas zonas urbanas de los países en desarrollo. El proceso de tratamiento de aguas residuales puede ser llevado en lagunas mediante reacciones tanto oxidativas como reductoras. En la capa superior de la laguna, donde las aguas residuales son aeróbicas, ocurre el mecanismo convencional de la demanda bioquímica de oxígeno aeróbico (DBO) y se produce la oxidación del amoníaco. La capa inferior de la laguna es anaerobia, y en esta zona tiene lugar la digestión de los sólidos del lodo, un intermedio, la zona facultativa permite la respiración con aceptores de electrones terminales distintos del oxígeno, esto permite reacciones como la desnitrificación. Los gases producidos en las zonas inferiores se estabilizan en la zona aeróbica por disolución oxígeno, y esto reduce los problemas de olores. Este estudio tiene como objetivo, estudiar el descenso de coliformes fecales en lagunas aireadas de plantas de tratamiento de aguas residuales en la ciudad de Lima, Perú. Los resultados señalan que la separación diferencial de las aguas tratadas, experimentó un descenso del 13 al 26% de coleiformes fecales en todas las lagunas de tratamiento(AU)


Globally, 44% of domestic wastewater is not treated safely, and wastewater collection and treatment has become a challenge, particularly in low-income urban areas within developing countries, where wastewater may flow untreated into stormwater conveyances or informal drainage channels. It is not uncommon to find effluents, solid wastes, human excreta, and liquid discharges from industries and hospitals in the surface waters of many urban areas in developing countries. The wastewater treatment process can be carried out in lagoons through both oxidative and reductive reactions. In the upper layer of the lagoon, where the wastewater is aerobic, the conventional mechanism of aerobic biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) occurs and ammonia oxidation occurs. The lower layer of the lagoon is anaerobic, and in this zone the digestion of the sludge solids takes place, an intermediate, the facultative zone allows respiration with terminal electron acceptors other than oxygen, and this allows reactions such as denitrification. The gases produced in the lower zones are stabilized in the aerobic zone by dissolving oxygen, and this reduces odor problems. The objective of this study is to study the decrease of fecal coliforms in aerated lagoons of wastewater treatment plants in the city of Lima, Peru. The results indicate that the differential separation of the treated waters experienced a decrease from 13 to 26% of fecal coleiforms in all treatment lagoons(AU)

Poultry litter is widely used worldwide as an organic fertilizer in agriculture. However, poultry litter may contain high concentrations of antibiotics and/or antimicrobial-resistant bacteria (ARB), which can be mobilized through soil erosion to water bodies, contributing to the spread of antimicrobial resistance genes (ARGs) in the environment. To better comprehend this kind of mobilization, the bacterial communities of four ponds used for irrigation in agricultural and poultry production areas were determined in two periods of the year: at the beginning (low volume of rainfall) and at the end of the rainy season (high volume of rainfall). 16S rRNA gene sequencing revealed not only significantly different bacterial community structures and compositions among the four ponds but also between the samplings. When the DNA obtained from the water samples was PCR amplified using primers for ARGs, those encoding integrases (intI1) and resistance to sulfonamides (sul1 and sul2) and ß-lactams (blaGES, blaTEM and blaSHV) were detected in three ponds. Moreover, bacterial strains were isolated from CHROMagar plates supplemented with sulfamethoxazole, ceftriaxone or ciprofloxacin and identified as belonging to clinically important Enterobacteriaceae. The results presented here indicate a potential risk of spreading ARB through water resources in agricultural areas with extensive fertilization with poultry litter.

Headwaters represent an essential component of hydrological, ecological, and socioeconomical systems, by providing constant water streams to the complete basin. However, despite the high importance of headwaters, there is a lack of vulnerability assessments worldwide. Identifying headwaters and their vulnerability in a spatially explicit manner can enable restauration and conservation programs. In this study, we assess the vulnerability of headwaters in South-Central Chile (38.4 to 43.2°S) considering multiple degradation factors related to climate change and land cover change. We analyzed 2292 headwaters, characterizing multiple factors at five spatial scales by using remote sensing data related to Land Use and Cover Change (LUCC), human disturbances, vegetation cover, climate change, potential water demand, and physiography. We then generated an index of vulnerability by integrating all the analyzed variables, which allowed us to map the spatial distribution of headwater vulnerability. Finally, to estimate the main drivers of degradation, we performed a Principal Components Analysis with an Agglomerative Hierarchical Clustering, that allowed us to group headwaters according to the analyzed factors. The largest proportion of most vulnerable headwaters are located in the north of our study area with 48.1 %, 62.1 %, and 28.1 % of headwaters classified as highly vulnerable at 0, 10, and 30 m scale, respectively. The largest proportion of headwaters are affected by Climate Change (63.66 %) and LUCC (23.02 %) on average across all scales. However, we identified three clusters, in which the northern cluster is mainly affected by LUCC, while the Andean and Coastal clusters are mainly affected by climate change. Our results and methods present an informative picture of the current state of headwater vulnerability, identifying spatial patterns and drivers at multiple scales. We believe that the approach developed in this study could be useful for new studies in other zones of the world and can also promote Chilean headwater conservation.

Nile tilapia is the most commercially important fish in Chiapas as well as in other parts of the world. An understanding of parasite infection dynamics in tilapia may assist in applying proper prophylactic measures for reducing the loss of fish caused by parasitic diseases. Different environments and culture systems may imply different infection dynamics; therefore, the present study identified and compared the infection parameters (prevalence, mean abundance, and intensity) of parasites of Oreochromis niloticus cultured in floating cages and ponds. A total of 18 metazoan parasite taxa were recovered from gills, skin, fins and intestines of 310 specimens from floating cages and ponds. Fourteen species of parasites were found in floating cages: 8 monogenean species, 1 nematode, 1 digenea, 1 crustacea, 3 protozoans. In ponds, 16 parasite taxa were reported: 11 were monogeneans species, 4 protozoans and 1 crustacean. In both systems, monogeneans (Cichlidogyrus sclerosus, C. tilapiae, Gyrodactylus cichlidarum) and protozoans (Trichodina compacta) were most prevalent. Tilapia in ponds sustained higher parasitic infections than those in floating cages (p < 0.05). The Canonical Correspondence Analysis showed two groups: the first grouped the ponds, associated with high values of nitrite, nitrate, ammonia, conductivity, temperature, and the abundance of the ectoparasites C. halli, C. dossoui, Scutogyrus longicornis, C. sclerosus and T. compacta. The second group grouped the cages, associated with Clinostomum marginatum, Apiosoma piscicola, Lernea sp., and Contracaecum sp. and a high dissolved oxygen concentration. Our findings suggest that monitoring programs are required to improve the sanitary conditions of tilapia cultures in Chiapas.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the environmental performance of an integrated water supply and wastewater system that employs a system of ponds at the wastewater treatment system. Additionally, this study aimed to understand the contribution of each stage of the system to the analyzed impact categories, and to evaluate alternative scenarios that consider the reduction of water losses in distribution, as well as the operation of an upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactor in the wastewater treatment plant (WWTP). The evaluation was performed through life cycle assessment (LCA) that considered the stages of water withdrawal, treatment, and distribution along with wastewater collection and treatment. The system was modeled in the OpenLCA software using the Ecoinvent 3.7.1 database. Environmental impacts were assessed using the ReCiPe method and cumulative energy demand. The results show that the water withdrawal stage is the potential source of the greatest environmental impacts. There are exceptions in the categories of climate change and photochemical oxidant formation, which are most impacted by the WWTP. Analysis of alternative scenarios revealed that the decrease in water loss rates during distribution contribute to a linear reduction in potential environmental impacts of the analyzed categories. The operation of a UASB reactor in the WWTP leads to a reduction in impacts on the categories of climate change (41.4%) and formation of photochemical oxidants (11.6%), and to increases in impacts on the other categories analyzed. The data presented provide important information for the improvement of public policies aimed at sanitation in developing countries.

Resumen Cuarenta y un taxones de Cladóceros fueron identificados en las charcas temporales en el curso de este estudio, de los cuales 15 son nuevos registros para el departamento de la Guajira y uno para Colombia. Con la adición de estos nuevos reportes se incrementa el total de cladóceras para Colombia y el departamento de La Guajira en 111 y 46 especies respectivamente. El departamento de La Guajira contiene el 41.44% de los taxones de cladóceros del territorio colombiano. Las charcas con mayor y menor riqueza fue la Ponderosa y la de Manaure con 37 y 2 especies respectivamente. También se proporcionan notas descriptivas, comentarios comparativos sobre morfología e ilustraciones para algunos taxones notables.


Abstract Forty-one Cladocera taxa were identified in temporary ponds during this study, of which 15 are new records for the department of La Guajira and one for Colombia. With the addition of these new reports, the total number of cladocerans for Colombia and La Guajira department is increased by 111 and 46 species respectively. La Guajira department comprises the 41.44 % of cladocera taxa of the Colombian territory. The pond with the greatest and lowest richness was Ponderosa and Manaure with 37 and 2 species respectively. Descriptive notes, comparative comments on morphology, and illustrations are also provided for some notable taxa.

Wastewater stabilization ponds are a natural form of wastewater treatment. Their low operation and maintenance costs have made them popular, especially in developing countries. In these systems, effluents are retained for long periods of time, allowing the microbial communities present in the ponds to degrade the organic matter present, using both aerobic and anaerobic processes. Even though these systems are widespread in low income countries, there are no studies about the microorganisms present in them and how they operate. In this study, we analised the microbial communities of two serial full-scale stabilization ponds systems using whole genome shotgun sequencing. First, a taxonomic profiling of the reads was performed, to estimate the microbial diversity. Then, the reads of each system were assembled and binned, allowing the reconstruction of 110 microbial genomes. A functional analysis of the genomes allowed us to find how the main metabolic pathways are carried out, and we propose several organisms that would be key to this kind of environment, since they play an important role in these metabolic pathways. This study represents the first genome-centred approach to understand the metabolic processes in facultative ponds. A better understanding of these microbial communities and how they stabilize the effluents of dairy industries is necessary to improve them and to minimize the environmental impact of dairy industries wastewater.

Investigating waterborne viruses is of great importance to minimizing risks to public health. Viruses tend to adsorb to sludge particles from wastewater processes by electrostatic and hydrophobic interactions between virus, aquatic matrix, and particle surface. Sludge is often re-used in agriculture; therefore, its evaluation is also of great interest to public health. In the present study, a pilot scale system treating real domestic wastewater from a large city in Brazil was used to evaluate the removal, the overall reduction, and liquid-solid partitioning of human adenovirus (HAdV), the novel coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) and fecal indicators (F-specific coliphages and E. coli). The system consists of a high-rate algal pond (HRAP) post-treating the effluent of an upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactor. Samples were collected from the influent and effluent of each unit, as well as from the sludge of the UASB and from the microalgae biomass in the HRAP. Pathogens and indicators were quantified by quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) (for HAdV), qPCR with reverse transcription (RTqPCR) (for SARS-CoV-2), the double agar plaque assay (for coliphages), and the most probable number (MPN) method (for E. coli). The removal and overall reduction of HAdV and SARS-CoV-2 was greater than 1-log10. Almost 60% of remaining SARS-CoV-2 RNA and more than 70% of remaining HAdV DNA left the system in the sludge, demonstrating that both viruses may have affinity for solids. Coliphages showed a much lower affinity to solids, with only 3.7% leaving the system in the sludge. The system performed well in terms of the removal of organic matter and ammoniacal nitrogen, however tertiary treatment would be necessary to provide further pathogen reduction, if the effluent is to be reused in agriculture. To our knowledge, this is the first study that evaluated the reduction and partitioning of SARS-CoV-2 and HAdV through the complete cycle of a wastewater treatment system consisting of a UASB reactor followed by HRAPs.

Low red-LED irradiances are an attractive alternative for enhancing microalgae photobioreactors treating digestate due to their potential contribution in decreasing area footprints with low energy consumptions. However, more information is required regarding the influence of digestate load on treatment performance and biomass valorisation when low-intensity red-LEDs are applied. Thus, this study assessed microalgae-based photobioreactors treating food waste digestate under different concentrations (5%, 25%, 50%, and 75%, v/v) at low red-LED irradiance (15 µmol·m-2·s-1). The removal efficiencies of soluble chemical oxygen demand (sCOD) at the end of the experiment ranged from 45% to 75% when treating influent loads between 5.3 and 79.1 g sCOD·m-3·d-1 (5% and 75%-digestate), respectively. Total ammonia nitrogen (TAN) was applied in loading rates between 3.2 and 48.5 g TAN·m-3·d-1 (5% and 75%, respectively) and removed with maximum efficiencies of 90%-100% in all trials. Nitrification-denitrification was proportionally more relevant when treating 5%-digestate, whereas volatilisation was the primary process in 25%, 50% and 75% concentrations. Microalgae presented adequate yields in all treatments, except in 75%-digestate, likely due to the blocking of light by the high solids concentrations. The assessment of the microalgae community and chlorophyll-a and carotenoids suggested that chlorophytes, mainly Dictyosphaerium pulchellum and Scenedesmus sp. grew autotrophically, whereas cyanobacteria Pseudanabaena sp. grew mixotrophically. Moreover, the sustainability of red LED lighting applications can be increased by anaerobic digestion or agricultural valorisation of the biomass, enabled by its high N and P contents. Low-intensity red-LEDs may have promissory applications in the treatment of high-strength wastewaters.

The hydrographic basin of Arroio Marreco (Paraná State) concentrates a productive chain of fish farming and great intensification of tilapia farming. In this study, we aimed to monitor the quality of effluent water and organic and inorganic elements released by fish farming in ponds, using geomorphological and land-use and occupation data. The Terrain Analysis Using Digital Elevation Models, Digital Elevation Model software was used to delimit watersheds in the software Quantum geographic information system version 3.6.3. A total of 1,457 production units (water slides) were identified across the study area. This represented an occupied area of 160.2 ha. Analyzing the sub-basins, it was found that High Marreco is the sub-basin with the most developed logistical chain. Low Marreco does not yet have an integration of its fish farming with the region's logistics chain. Medium Marreco does not have fish farming as its main activity, only using it to reuse inputs from other agricultural activities. There is a large input of nutrients from aquaculture in all the sub-basins. To reduce them, it is recommended to implement decantation and/or reuse of wastewater systems. The results of this study show how important it is to know the dynamics of nutrients in the fish farms and the physical characteristics of the drainage basin to determine the support capacity of the environment, so as not to allow licenses that promote impacts above the self-cleaning capacity of the courses water.


Na bacia hidrográfica do arroio Marreco, no estado do Paraná, concentra-se uma cadeia produtiva de piscicultura com intensa criação de tilápias. Neste estudo, foi monitorada a qualidade da água do efluente e dos subprodutos (fósforo e nitrogênio) da piscicultura em viveiros escavados, utilizando-se dados geomorfológicos e de uso e ocupação do solo. O software Análise de Terreno com Modelos Digitais de Elevação, Modelo Digital de Elevação, foi utilizado para delimitar bacias hidrográficas no software Quantum sistema de informação geográfica v. 3.6.3., o qual identificou 1.457 unidades de produção em toda a área de estudo (160,2 ha de lâmina d'água). Analisando as sub-bacias, constatou--se que o Alto Marreco é a sub-bacia com a cadeia logística mais bem desenvolvida. No Baixo Marreco, ainda não existe integração de sua piscicultura com a cadeia logística da região. Já no Médio Marreco, a piscicultura não é a atividade principal, serve apenas para reutilizar insumos de outras atividades agrícolas. Ocorre em todas as sub-bacias grande aporte de nutrientes da aquicultura, e para reduzi-los, recomenda-se implantar sistemas de decantação e/ou reaproveitamento de águas residuárias. Os resultados deste estudo mostraram a importância de conhecer a dinâmica dos nutrientes na piscicultura e as características físicas da bacia hidrográfica para determinar a capacidade de suporte do meio ambiente de forma a não permitir licenças que resultem em impactos superiores aos da autodepuração.

Annual fish species have evolved complex adaptations to survive in temporary wetlands. The main adaptation of these fish is the ability to produce embryos that survive dry periods. Embryo development of this fish can show variation at multiple levels influenced by many environmental factors, such as photoperiod and temperature. Predator cues are another factor that can influence the embryonic stage. One way in which annual fish could adapt to predators is by using risk-spreading strategies (through bet-hedging). Nonetheless, this strategy depends on the coevolutionary history between predators and preys and on the degree of environmental unpredictability, resulting in different responses across different species. This study investigated the influence of predator cues on the embryonic development and hatching of two Austrolebias species that inhabit ponds that present differences in hydroperiod and the risk of predator presence. The results confirmed a differentiated response between the two annual fish species tested, corroborating the modulation of hatching against the risk of predation by native predatory fish. The authors further showed that development times varied between the two annual fish species, regardless of the presence of predators. They highlight that the variation in embryonic development is strongly affected by different levels of hydroperiod unpredictability faced by the two species. To unravel finer-scale local adaptations in the annual fish embryo development, future studies should focus on a region with greater spatial gradient.

Abstract Large branchiopods has been distributed in temporary waters around the world, but the knowledge about these organisms in Colombia is poorly known, especially leptesteriids, we report a new record of the Clam Shrimp Leptestheria venezuelica Daday, 1923 from the north of Colombia.

The efficiency of biodiversity assessments and biomonitoring studies is commonly challenged by limitations in taxonomic identification and quantification approaches. In this study, we assessed the effects of different taxonomic and numerical resolutions on a range of community structure metrics in invertebrate compositional data sets from six regions distributed across North and South America. We specifically assessed the degree of similarity in the metrics (richness, equitability, beta diversity, heterogeneity in community composition and congruence) for data sets identified to a coarse resolution (usually family level) and the finest taxonomic resolution practical (usually genus level, sometimes species or morphospecies) and by presence-absence and relative abundance numerical resolutions. Spearman correlations showed highly significant and positive associations between univariate metrics (richness and equitability) calculated for coarse- and finest-resolution datasets. Procrustes analysis detected significant congruence between composition datasets. Higher correlation coefficients were found for datasets with the same numerical resolutions regardless of the taxonomic level (about 90%), while the correlations for comparisons across numerical resolutions were consistently lower. Our findings indicate that family-level resolution can be used as a surrogate of finer taxonomic resolutions to calculate a range of biodiversity metrics commonly used to describe invertebrate community structure patterns in New World freshwater wetlands without significant loss of information. However, conclusions on biodiversity patterns derived from datasets with different numerical resolutions should be critically considered in studies on wetland invertebrates.

Abstract From the analysis of plankton samples from a temporary pond of northern Colombia some female specimen of the daphinid cladoceran Scapholeberis freyi Dumont and Pensaert, 1983 was collected. It represents the first report in Colombia and expands its known occurrence in South America. The specimens observed are described and compared with available morphological data of their closest congeners. A brief descriptions of this taxon based on Colombian material is given.


Resumen A partir del análisis de las muestras de plancton de una charca temporal al noreste de Colombia algunos especímenes hembra del cladócero daphnido Scapholeberis freyi Dumont and Pensaert, 1983 fueron colectados. Este representa el primer reporte en Colombia y expande su rango distribucional conocido en Sur América. Los especímenes observados se describen y se comparan con los datos morfológicos disponibles de sus congéneres más cercanos. Una descripción breve de este taxón basado en el material colombiano es dada.
