RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: Dignity Therapy (DT) is a brief form of psychotherapy that helps people with life-threatening illnesses and their loved ones cope with emotional pain and demoralization. Unfortunately, not everyone has the opportunity to receive DT during their lifetime. Posthumous Dignity Therapy (PDT) was then devised to be administered to bereaved family members. However, PDT has not yet been validated or studied in the specific cultural and linguistic context of Portuguese-Brazilians. This study aims to fill this gap by validating PDT for the Portuguese (Brazilian) context. METHODS: Using Beaton's methodology, including the processes of translation, synthesis, back-translation, evaluation by an expert committee, and pre-testing, the PDT Schedule of Questions underwent validation and cultural adaptation. The research was conducted in a Palliative Care Unit at a tertiary cancer hospital in Brazil. RESULTS: The questionnaire was translated, back-translated, and evaluated by the panel of experts, obtaining a Content Validity Index of 0.97. During the pretest phase, it was observed that the participant's interview method needed to be changed from remote (telephone or videoconference) to in-person. Additionally, it was necessary to modify some terms related to death and dying, as they caused discomfort to the participants. As a result of this process, the PDT was modified, and adapted to the Brazilian cultural and linguistic reality. SIGNIFICANCE OF RESULTS: This validation study will be significant for future DT research from the caregivers' perspective and for projects aiming to implement this therapeutic modality in palliative care units, in addition to helping participants remember their loved ones better by providing a tangible legacy document that assists them emotionally and materially in coping with the grieving process.

RESUMO

This study aimed to translate, culturally adapt, and validate "The Nutrition for Sport Knowledge Questionnaire (NSKQ)" for Brazilian athletes. The NSKQ is an Australian instrument composed of 87 questions divided into six subsections (weight control, macronutrients, micronutrients, sports nutrition, supplementation, and alcohol) designed to assess the nutritional knowledge (NK) of athletes. The translation process followed the recommendations of the World Health Organization for translating and adapting instruments. Semantic validation involved a panel of specialists (n = 21), followed by an assessment performed by a group of adult Brazilian athletes from various sports (n = 17). The reproducibility and internal consistency of the questionnaire were evaluated via a test-retest approach in a sample of adult Brazilian athletes (n = 29) from diverse sports, who completed the Brazilian version of the NSKQ (NSKQ-BR). Overall, the NSKQ-BR presented good internal consistency (α = 0.95) and reproducibility (intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) = 0.85). The factors "sports nutrition" and "alcohol" showed moderate reproducibility (ICC = 0.74 (0.46-0.88) and ICC = 0.68 (0.33-0.85), respectively). Most athletes (n = 17; 58.6%) presented a medium NK score (50-65%). The NSKQ-BR is available to evaluate the NK levels of Brazilian athletes. The NSKQ-BR presented high internal consistency and reproducibility, validating its applicability among adult athletes across diverse sports.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Admixture occurs between different ethnic human populations. The global colonization in recent centuries by Europeans led to the most significant admixture in human history. While admixture may enhance genetic diversity for better fitness, it may also impact on human health by transmitting genetic variants for disease susceptibility in the admixture population. The admixture by Portuguese global exploration initiated in the 15th century has reached over 20 million of Portuguese-heritage population worldwide. It provides a valuable model to study the impact of admixture on human health. BRCA1 and BRCA2 (BRCA) are two of the important tumor suppressor genes. The pathogenic variation (PV) in BRCA is well determined to cause high risk of hereditary breast and ovarian cancer. Tracing the distribution of Portuguese BRCA PV in Portuguese-heritage population will help to understand the impact of admixture on cancer susceptibility in modern humans. In this study, we analyzed the distribution of the Portuguese-originated BRCA variation in Brazilian population, which has high degree Portuguese-heritage. METHODS: By comprehensive data mining, standardization and annotation, we generated a Portuguese-derived BRCA variation dataset and a Brazilian-derived BRCA variation dataset. We compared the two BRCA variation datasets to identify the BRCA variants shared between the two populations. RESULTS: The Portuguese-derived BRCA variation dataset consists of 220 BRCA variants including 78 PVs from 11,482 Portuguese cancer patients, 93 (42.2%) in BRCA1 and 127 (57.7%) in BRCA2. Of the 556 Portuguese BRCA PV carriers carrying the 78 PVs, 331 (59.5%) carried the three Portuguese-BRCA founder PVs of BRCA1 c.2037delinsCC, BRCA1 c.3331_3334del and BRCA2 c.156_157insAlu. The Brazilian-derived BRCA variation dataset consists of 255 BRCA PVs from 7,711 cancer patients, 136 (53.3%) in BRCA1 and 119 (46.6%) in BRCA2. We developed an open database named dbBRCA-Portuguese ( https://genemutation.fhs.um.edu.mo/dbbrca-portuguese/ ) and an open database named dbBRCA-Brazilian ( https://genemutation.fhs.um.edu.mo/dbbrca-brazilian ) to host the BRCA variation data from Portuguese and Brazilian populations. We compared the BRCA PV datasets between Portuguese and Brazilian populations, and identified 29 Portuguese-specific BRCA PVs shared between Portuguese and Brazilian populations, 14 in BRCA1 including the Portuguese founder BRCA1 c.3331_3334del and BRCA1 c.2037delinsCC, and 15 in BRCA2 including the Portuguese founder BRCA2 c.156_157insAlu. Searching the 78 Portuguese BRCA PVs in over 5,000 ancient human genomes identified evolution origin for only 8 PVs in Europeans dated between 37,470 and 3,818 years before present, confirming the Portuguese-specificity of Portuguese BRCA PVs; comparing the 78 Portuguese BRCA PVs Portuguese, 255 Brazilian BRCA PVs, and 134 African BRCA PVs showed little overlapping, ruling out the possibility that the BRCA PVs shared between Portuguese and Brazilian may also be contributed by African. CONCLUSION: Our study provides evidence that the admixture in recent human history contributed to cancer susceptibility in modern humans.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: To perform a cross-cultural adaptation and validation of the Brazilian-Portuguese versions of the Brace Questionnaire in adolescent idiopathic scoliosis. METHODS: A forward-backward translation process was employed to produce a Brazilian Portuguese version of the Brace Questionnaire, followed by comprehensive cross-cultural adaptation stages. The measurements of internal consistency and test-retest reliability were assessed by Cronbach's a and intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC), respectively. The Pearson's correlation coefficient was used to analyze the concurrent validity by comparison with the Scoliosis Research Society-22r questionnaire. RESULTS: A total of 84 scoliosis patients (age 13.4 ± 2.0 years, thoracic Cobb angle 33.3° ± 13.8°, and lumbar Cobb angle 29.8° ± 14.3°) were included. The Brace Questionnaire showed excellent internal consistency (Cronbach α = 0.93) and moderate reliability (ICC = 0.86). The correlations between the Brace Questionnaire and Scoliosis Research Society-22 were r = 0.66; p = 0.011. In addition, it was found that the Brazilian version of the Brace Questionnaire does not have ceiling and floor effects. CONCLUSIONS: The Brazilian-Portuguese adaptation of the brace questionnaire shows excellent reliability and can be a valid tool for psychometric assessment in adolescent idiopathic scoliosis.

RESUMO

AIM: This scoping review aimed to identify and appraise the effectiveness and impact of breastfeeding promotion interventions conducted across Portuguese-speaking sovereign countries. METHODS: Using the PRISMA-ScR guidelines, we searched 14 electronic databases for publications published through 31 July 2023. The search terms were designed to find studies promoting breastfeeding or exclusive breastfeeding in pre-defined Portuguese-speaking countries. RESULTS: Of the 5263 papers initially retrieved, 30 interventional studies on breastfeeding met the inclusion criteria across three countries: Brazil (N = 26), Portugal (N = 2) and Guinea Bissau (N = 2). Participants ranged from pregnant women, mothers, mother-infant pairs, healthcare professionals, and school children. Overall, the interventions increased exclusive breastfeeding and better breastfeeding practices, such as a higher duration of breastfeeding. The interventions positively affected maternal breastfeeding self-efficacy, knowledge and perception. Only four studies used a theoretical framework. CONCLUSION: While the results were often statistically significant, no study had an outcome close to the recommended UNICEF and WHO goal of 70% breastfeeding at six months. The need to determine what works for the recommended six months postpartum period is critical for maximising children's health in Portuguese-speaking countries.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION AND HYPOTHESIS: The high prevalence of pelvic floor disorders in women requires assessments using validated instruments. We aimed to translate, cross-culturally adapt to Brazilian Portuguese, and analyze the measurement properties of the International Consultation on Incontinence Questionnaire Vaginal Symptoms Module (ICIQ-VS-Br). METHODS: Participants were Brazilian women older than 18 years presenting vulvovaginal symptoms according to the Vulvovaginal Symptoms Questionnaire (VSQ-Br). The development of the ICIQ-VS-Br included the steps of translation, synthesis, back-translation, expert meeting, and pre-test. We analyzed construct validity by correlating the ICIQ-VS-Br and VSQ-Br. The participants answered the ICIQ-VS-Br the second time 7 to 10 days after the first response. We measured test-retest reliability using intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC), internal consistency using Cronbach's alpha, and construct validity using Pearson's correlation coefficient. RESULTS: The study included 313 women. Reproducibility was analyzed for the three subscales of the ICIQ-VS-Br, resulting in an ICC of 0.92 (95% CI 0.89 to 0.94) for "vaginal symptoms," 0.85 (95% CI 0.78 to 0.89) for "sexual matters," and 0.87 (95% CI 0.81 to 0.91) for "quality of life." Construct validity showed a moderate correlation between ICIQ-VS-Br and VSQ-Br, confirming our hypotheses. CONCLUSIONS: The ICIQ-VS-Br demonstrated validity and reproducibility, indicating that the instrument can be used in scientific research and clinical practice.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: To translate and cross-culturally adapt the English version of the International Consultation on Incontinence Modular Questionnaire for Male Lower Urinary Tract Symptoms (ICIQ-MLUTS) into Brazilian Portuguese and evaluate its psychometric properties. INTRODUCTION: Male lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) are frequent and commonly assessed with questionnaires. The ICIQ-MLUTS is a robust instrument that investigates the main aspects of LUTS in men and their impact on quality of life. Although highly recommended, Grade A is not as popular as the International Prostate Symptom Score (IPSS) and remained untranslated and unvalidated for Brazilian Portuguese. METHODS: After authorization by the Advisory Board of the International Consultation on Incontinence (ICIQ) the translation process was conducted according to the standard guidelines and the ICIQ validation protocol. Internal consistency was assessed using Cronbach's ⍺ coefficient and values > 0.7 were considered satisfactory. To assess test-retest reliability and reproducibility, Spearman's correlation coefficient and intraclass correlation coefficient were used. For group data, a Spearman correlation coefficient or an intraclass correlation coefficient of at least 0.70 demonstrates good test-retest reliability. A p < 0.05 was considered significant. RESULTS: One hundred and eighty-six, aged 61.41 ± 11.01 years, suffering from LUTS participated in the study between January 2021 and October 2022. Cronbach's ⍺, 0.875, demonstrated the internal consistency of the Portuguese version of ICIQ-MLUTS. The intraclass correlation coefficient of 0.912 (0.882; 0.935 - 95% CI) for the test-retest evidenced the stability and validity of the instrument. Likewise, Spearman's correlation coefficient highlighted the agreement between IPSS and ICIQ-MLUTS, 0.906, <0.001. DISCUSSION: The Portuguese version of the ICIQ-MLUTS demonstrated internal consistency, stability, and validity, in addition to agreement with the IPSS. CONCLUSION: The ICIQ-MLUTS, translated and validated into Brazilian Portuguese, is a robust and reliable instrument to assess LUTS in Brazilian men and can be used in the evaluation of treatment and research.

Introduction: Violence Risk Screening-10 (V-Risk-10) is a violence risk management (VRM) tool in mental health for patients with severe mental disorders (SMD). Its aim is to briefly identify most susceptible patients to psychomotor agitation and, based on this perception, develop a proposed care plan. It was developed in Norway, and to use it in Brazil, cross-cultural adaptation (CCA) and validation of the instrument are necessary. This involves adapting the content to the language and context of the social group that will benefit, followed by statistical analyses to prove the instrument's accuracy. Objective: To describe the process of CCA and validation of V-Risk-10 for Brazilian culture, with the final development of "Rastreio do Risco de Violência-10" instrument. Method: CCA study consisting of conceptual and semantic analysis stages; evaluation by a panel of judges; and final proposition of the instrument. To conduct the validation study, it is necessary to assess reliability and accuracy using Cohen's Kappa statistical measure, which assesses agreement between two independent raters. Results: The study generated "Rastreio do Risco de Violência-10" instrument, a version of V-Risk-10 adapted to Portuguese/Brazilian for use in patients with severe mental disorder. Conclusion: The adapted tool presents content consistent with the Brazilian scenario, providing support for violence risk management in patients with SMD, with easy and quick operationalization. The overall median of the instrument showed a Kappa coefficient of 0.83, indicating high reliability of the instrument overall. Keywords: Cross-Cultural Adaptation. Validation. V-Risk-10. Portuguese. RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: Cataplexy is a sudden and involuntary episode of loss of muscle tone during wakefulness. Cataplexy cannot be easily recognized when clinical features are atypical or when the physician is unfamiliar with its characteristics. The unstructured clinical interview is the only standard diagnostic method, but the use of a targeted questionnaire can help in the diagnosis of cataplexy. METHODS: The Stanford cataplexy questionnaire is a self-administered 51-question questionnaire. This validation consisted of an initial translation and back-translation of the questionnaire from English into Brazilian Portuguese, followed by a pilot study with 10 participants for the cultural adaptation of the scale. RESULTS: 155 consecutive patients aged 18-85 completed the questionnaire. The Brazilian version of the Stanford cataplexy questionnaire showed similar results to the original version with good metric properties (area under the curve), high internal consistency (Cronbach's alpha equal to 0.87), good reliability and reproducibility. CONCLUSIONS: The Brazilian Portuguese version of the Stanford Cataplexy questionnaire presented good accuracy satisfactory psychometric properties in identifying cataplexy.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: This study aimed to translate the Skin Cancer Index (SCI) into Portuguese, adapt it for Brazilian culture, and clinically validate it. METHODS: A five-stage cross-cultural adaptation model was followed, with subsequent clinical validation. Inter-rater agreement was assessed using the content validity index (CVI). The hypothesis of the non-inferiority of the CVI at 80% probability level was evaluated using an exact binomial test. We used Spearman's rank-order and Pearson's product-moment correlation analysis, internal consistency using McDonald's ω and Cronbach's α metric, and construct validity using confirmatory factor analysis. The factorial model was validated using the chi-squared test, root mean square error of approximation (RMSEA), comparative fit index (CFI), and standardized root mean square residual (SRMR). RESULTS: The first stage yielded two independent translations. After synthesis, back-translation, and review, the prefinal version was tested on 40 patients. Inter-rater agreement indices on content validity were significantly higher than 80% (p < 0.05). The SCI remained stable, and the Spearman's rank-order (rs), Pearson product-moment (r), and intraclass correlation coefficients were > 0.9, indicating excellent reliability. The reliability of McDonald's ω was considered ideal (> 0.8) in all subdimensions and scale. Cronbach's α was considered ideal in the "Emotional" and "Social" subdimensions and scale. Construct validity was observed in all subdimensions and scale through the criteria (χ2) p value > 0.05, RMSEA < 0.08, CFI ≥ 0.9, and SRMR ≤ 0.08. CONCLUSION: The cross-cultural adaptation of the SCI to Portuguese for Brazilian culture showed content validity and reliability, contributing to quality of life assessment in patients with NMSC.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Assessing the quality of life (QOL) of children with early onset scoliosis (EOS) has been discussed recently. Therefore, the study aimed to apply and correlate the 24-item Early Onset Scoliosis Questionnaire (EOSQ-24) with the 50-item Childhood Health Questionnaire (CHQ-PF50) to find predictive factors impacting QOL. METHODS: Cross-sectional study involving a population of caregivers of patients with EOS. The sample consisted of 72 patients. Two research assistants applied the Portuguese version of the EOSQ-24 and CHQ-PF50 in 3 treatment centers. The EOSQ-24 assesses the subjective response of children with EOS from the parent's point of view. The CHQ is a self-administered questionnaire or parental proxy assessment of the psychological and social status of children aged 5 to 18 years. RESULTS: Of 72 patients, 41 (56.9%) were females, mean age of 11.9 ± 4.2 years. The most common scoliosis was of neuromuscular origin (32%). The CHQ-PF50 showed that family-related items had significant scores. The most affected subcategory was physical function (45.5), and the least affected was mental health (90.8). Thus, the CHQ-PF50 PhS summary index was 27, and the CHQ-PF50 PsS was 71.7. Moreover, the critical categories for the EOSQ-24 questionnaire were daily life and physical function (45.1 and 47.8, respectively), and the least affected categories were transfer and pulmonary function (70.8 and 68.9, respectively). Four subcategories showed a strong correlation between both questionnaires: general health (r = 0.749, P < 0.001), physical function (r = 0.645, P < 0.001), bodily pain (r = 0.714, P < 0.001), and mental health (r = 0.424, P < 0.001). Using CHQ-PF50 as a dependent variable in multiple regression analysis (P = 0.028), the only variable affecting the scores was syndromic scoliosis (P = 0.019; 95% CI -27.4 to -2.5). CONCLUSION: A strong correlation between both questionnaires was seen for general health, physical function, bodily pain, and mental health. Syndromic scoliosis was a predictor of worse QOL according to the CHQ-PF50.

RESUMO

In the well-known causative alternation, a verb appears either in a causative-transitive or in an inchoative-intransitive form. The inchoative form is marked with a reflexive clitic in some languages, such as Norwegian, but is unmarked in others, such as English. There are two main proposals to explain the alternation: a lexical-derivational account (a lexical rule is responsible for the demotion of the cause argument), and a syntactic-derivational one (in a type of reflexivization, the theme/patient is construed as responsible for causing the event). A third type of approach posits that the alternation emerges when a verb can be found in different constructions and no derivation is involved. Lundquist et al. (Glossa J Gen Linguist 1:1-30, 2016) put the first two approaches to experimental testing and found that while the decausativization approach is adequate for English, the reflexivization approach explains the Norwegian facts. The present experimental study investigates which proposal is adequate to explain the alternation in Brazilian Portuguese. Differently from both English and Norwegian, Brazilian Portuguese allows reflexive-marked and unmarked inchoatives with the same verb. In a replication of Lundquist et al.'s (Glossa J Gen Linguist 1:1-30, 2016) experiment, our results show that Brazilian Portuguese assigns distinct meanings to the two forms of the inchoative. We conclude that the reflexive pronoun se indicates that the change of state described in the inchoative sentence was caused by some entity, but not an agent. We then argue that a non-derivational approach explains the alternation, as a single verb occurs in distinct syntactic configurations, with distinct meaning implications.

Abstract The present study analyzed trends in premature mortality from Noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) between 1990 and 2019, the projections up to 2030, and the risk factors (RFs) attributable to these diseases in the Community of Portuguese Language Countries (CPLP). Estimates from the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) study and the analysis of the burden of premature mortality due to NCDs were used for nine CPLP countries, applying age-standardized rates, using RStudio. Portugal, Brazil, Equatorial Guinea, Angola, and Guinea Bissau showed declining premature mortality rates caused by NCDs, while East Timor, Cape Verde, São Tomé and Príncipe, and Mozambique showed an increase in rates. Projections indicate that none of the countries is expected to achieve the goals of reducing premature mortality due to NCDs by one third by 2030. The attributable burden of disease showed that the most important RFs in 2019 were: high systolic blood pressure (SBP), tobacco, dietary risks, high body mass index (BMI), and air pollution. It can therefore be concluded that there are profound differences in the burden of NCDs among the countries, with better results in Portugal and Brazil, and that no CPLP country is likely to reach the NCD reduction target by 2030.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: Dignity therapy (DT) was developed to help patients at their end of life to reframe and give meaning to their illness process. The DT question protocol focuses on personhood and important aspects of the individual's life. This study aimed to translate and culturally adapt the Dignity Therapy Question Protocol (DTQP) to Brazilian Portuguese. METHODS: This was a descriptive and methodological study, and cross-cultural adaptation process comprised 4 stages: (1) translation and synthesis of English original version protocol into Brazilian Portuguese, (2) back translation, (3) experts committee, and (4) pretest. RESULTS: The Portuguese version of the DTQP - Protocolo de Perguntas sobre Terapia da Dignidade - demonstrated a content validity index of 1 for all equivalences. The initial sample consisted of 41 participants (9 [21.9%] refused to participate and 1 [2.43%] dropped out). The pretest was applied to 30 (73.1%) participants, 15 of them were female and the mean age was 53.4 years. The final version consisted of 10 questions that were approved by the original authors who affirmed that the DTQP Brazilian Portuguese version maintained the original English characteristics. SIGNIFICANCE OF RESULTS: The Brazilian cultural adaptation of the DTQP was well understood by patients. It will be very useful in palliative care clinical practice for patients nearing end of life. The adapted version to Brazilian Portuguese will facilitate future studies using the DTQP.

The objective of the present work was to discuss the difference between the terms oral and oral in Dentistry, based on the Portuguese language. The bibliographic methodology sought to anchor in language and dentistry theorists to investigate the difference between such words. After reading texts that dealt with these aspects, we observed that the main difference resided in the origin of the word bucca and os, originating from classical and vulgar Latin, respectively, with different meanings. However, when migrating to Portuguese, the speakers chose the term bucca over os, which is still used alongside oral, with similar meanings. We also noted that for health professionals it would be important to standardize the terminology, as it would facilitate the understanding of these terms for patients and professionals from other areas, such as translators; on the other hand, it was clear that at times, terminological unification would be more difficult, as the contexts of use would have to be changed. Finally, we emphasize that studying these words in the context of Dentistry is important so that both patients and health professionals, or from similar areas, know the peculiar difference(AU)

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: As the third largest immigrant population in Houston, Texas, Brazilians represent a large bloc of the community in need of culturally and linguistically informed healthcare. In particular, the number of older adults within this population is rapidly growing, emphasizing the increased need to develop socially responsible neuropsychological assessment practices that can meet the needs of this demographic. Additionally, early symptoms of cognitive decline in Brazilian older adults can be culturally perceived as normal aging and may be masked by cultural and lifestyle practices (i.e., scaffolding by family members) that result in lack of appreciation for cognitive and functional decrements. With increased knowledge and awareness of Brazilian culture and customs, we can better understand and assess brain-behavior relationships, provide tailored assessment services, and determine the clinical implications for this population. METHODS: Test instruments in Portuguese were identified through systematic literature searches, and in consultation with clinicians serving the Portuguese community in the United States, and cultural brokers involved in Brazilian-based neuropsychology. RESULTS: A multidomain neuropsychological battery with accompanying normative data for use with adults from this community is presented. A case illustration is utilized to highlight limitations and strengths of the proposed battery, which includes core and supplemental measures. CONCLUSION: Neuropsychologists are encouraged to familiarize themselves with the proposed protocol, understand the psychometric limitations of the available tools, and make an earnest attempt toward providing socially responsible neuropsychological care via the appropriate use of culturally and linguistically tailored instruments and clinical practices.

Abstract The article analyses Maria Palmira Macedo Tito de Morais' international nursing education as a Rockefeller Foundation fellow, during the Portuguese Estado Novo. It studies the local contexts influence on the international philanthropic agency's actions, culminating in disputes with World Health Organization over the Portuguese nurse as staff. The sources are two dossiers on Maria Tito de Morais and her two fellowship cards collected at the Rockefeller Archive Center, a report of the Directorate-General of Health of Portugal and the journal A Tribuna, consulted at the Brazilian Digital Library. In conclusion, the Rockefeller Foundation's strategies, when funding Maria Tito de Morais' education aiming to hire her did not guarantee control over her professional trajectory.
