BACKGROUND: Rabbits are an important worldwide meat- and fibre-producing animal, and they are popular pets. The rabbit ear mite, Psoroptes cuniculi, causes severe dermatological disease. Epidemiological data on P. cuniculi infestations are important for public health. OBJECTIVE: The objective of the study was to determine the frequency of P. cuniculi infestation in pet rabbits and evaluate epidemiological factors associated with infestation. ANIMALS: Two hundred pet rabbits presented for veterinary care between 2021 and 2022. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Physical examination, otoscopy and microscopy were used for ear mite identification. Association with age, sex, body mass index (BMI), breed, feeding and housing management was analysed. RESULTS: Of the 200 rabbits, 59 (29.5%) were positive for P. cuniculi. Only female sex had a positive association with P. cuniculi. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: Psoroptes cuniculi in pet rabbits has a similar frequency to that reported in meat-producing rabbits, and female sex had a positive association.

BACKGROUND: Ovine psoroptic mange (sheep scab) is an important disease of sheep worldwide caused by the parasitic mite, Psoroptes ovis. It has a negative impact on animal welfare and leads to significant economic losses for the sheep industry. Effective and targeted management is required to limit its transmission. METHODS: A stochastic metapopulation model of sheep scab transmission is used to investigate the contribution of the treatment of sheep prior to movements to sales, gatherings (predominantly markets) and away grazing to the reduction of prevalence of farms with scab in Great Britain. RESULTS: Treatment prior to movement to gatherings resulted in an 86% reduction in the overall prevalence of farms with scab and was more effective at reducing the overall prevalence of farms with scab than treatment before other categories of movements. The relative risk of farms having scab infection was inversely related to the percentage of farms which treated, but this relationship was not linear, with the biggest declines in the prevalence of farms with scab being achieved by small percentages of farms treating; a 50% relative reduction in the farm prevalence was achieved with only 15% of farms treating prior to gathering movements. CONCLUSIONS: The results suggest that pre-movement treatment of sheep could make an important contribution to national scab control and, in practice, the approach could be more highly targeted if used in conjunction with known geographic and management risk factors for scab.

Psoroptic mange causes relevant losses of productivity in cattle. Macrocyclic lactones are one of the main pharmacological tools recommended for controlling it. The aim of the current work was to compare the relationship between the pharmacokinetic behavior and the effectiveness of both ivermectin (IVM) and doramectin (DRM) following their administration as either the traditional (1 %) or long-acting (3.15-3.5 %) injectable formulations to cattle naturally infected with Psoroptes ovis. The overall work involved three trials (1, 2 and 3) carried out on commercial beef cattle farms (grazing systems). In Trial 1, 20 grazing steers with active mange infection were allocated into 2 groups (n = 10) and treated subcutaneously (SC) with either IVM (1 %) or DRM (1%) at 0.2 mg/kg. In Trial 2, 16 grazing steers with active mange divided in 2 groups (n = 8) were treated SC with either IVM 1 % (0.2 mg/kg) or IVM 3.15 % long-acting (0.63 mg/kg). In Trial 3, 2 groups of mange infected steers (n = 8) were treated SC with either IVM 3.15 % (0.63 mg/kg) or DRM 3.5 % (0.7 mg/kg). Blood samples were collected of each experimental group and the drug systemic availability was estimated by measuring of IVM/DRM concentrations by HPLC. Skin scraping samples were collected from each animal and mites were counted at 14, 21 and 28 days post-treatment. In Trial 1, the mite density score on day 14 was significantly lower for DRM (0.60) compared to IVM (1.80) (P = 0.019). Based on the number of animals clinically cured (negative to the presence of mites), the efficacy of DRM was higher (80 %) than that obtained for IVM (10 %) (P < 0.05). DRM systemic exposure measured as AUC was 1.37-fold higher compared to IVM. In Trial 2, even though IVM exposure was significantly greater after the long-acting (3.15 %) compared to the traditional formulation (1 %), none of the treatments significantly reduced the mite density score, with a percentage of animals cured between 0 % and 37.5 % after both IVM treatments. In Trial 3, the 100 % of cured animals were achieved at day 21 (IVM 3.15 %) and at day 28 (DRM 3.5 %) post-treatment. In conclusion, DRM treatment could offer some therapeutic advantages in field situations where IVM fails to control mange. Depending on the level of susceptibility of the mite population, long-acting pharmaceutical formulations can be useful to control Psoroptic mange in cattle. The use of macrocyclic lactones for mange control in cattle should be based on appropriate diagnosis on each individual farm.

The main of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of dinotefuran, pyriproxyfen and permethrin-combination (Vectra 3D-CEVA) in the topical treatment of rabbits naturally infested with P. ovis. Adult New Zealand rabbits (n = 18) with plaques of crust in both ears were divided into three groups (one control and two treated). On day 0, the animals belonging to the treated groups received a single dose of a commercial ectoparasiticide formulation, recommended for use in dogs. The control group (G1) (n = 6) received no treatment, the treated group (G2) (n = 6) received one drop in each ear, and the remaining volume was applied along the back of the animal in the dorsal midline with the commercial formulation. In the other treated group (G3) (n = 6), animals received the same product used in G2, but all the volumes of 0.5 mL were applied only to the back of the animal (dorsal midline). On days 0, +7, +14, +21, +28 and +35, lesion scores and mites per gram (MPG) of each ear scab were evaluated. Statistical analysis was performed using the statistical software Bioestat 5.01. As the Shapiro-Wilk test determined that the data were nonparametrically distributed, the Kruskal-Wallis test was performed, followed by the Student-Newman-Keuls test, to determine the significance levels among the mean values of mite counts per gram of crusts compared to the three experimental groups. The efficacies for remission of lesion scores were 19.87 % on day +7 to 83.44 % on day +35 for G2 and 70.67 % on day +7 to 92.20 % on day +35 for G3. The efficacies obtained by evaluation of MPG were 100 % on day +7 to 99.86 % on day +35 for G2 and from 93.05 % on day +7 to 99.89 on day +35 for G3. The topical administration of the combination of dinotefuran (4.95 %), pyriproxifen (0.44 %) and permethrin (36 %) on the ears and back or only on the back in rabbits was shown to be effective in naturally controlling mite infestations by P. ovis.

ABSTRACT: Sheep psoroptic mange is a form of highly itchy and contagious dermatitis caused by the mite Psoroptes ovis. Here, we reporteda case of sheep psoroptic mange outbreak at a property in São Vicente do Sul, Rio Grande do Sul (RS), Brazil. Poor nutritional status, restless behavior, pruritus, wool fall, yellowish crusted skin lesions with edge exudate, erythema surrounding the lesions and presence of wool trapped between the teeth were observed in the herd. Complete blood count test showed marked eosinophilia, and parasitological examination of a skin scrape revealed P. ovis. Histopathological examination of a skin biopsy sample revealed eosinophilic pustular dermatitis. The treatment consisted of two administrations of 1% ivermectin at 1 mL/33 kg of body weight subcutaneously over an interval of 10 days. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of the occurrence of psoroptic mange at a sheep farm of RS with description of the clinical signs and laboratory and histopathological findings.


RESUMO: A sarna psoróptica ovina é uma dermatite altamente pruriginosa e contagiosa causada pelo ácaro Psoroptes ovis. Este trabalho registra o caso da doença em uma propriedade no município de São Vicente do Sul, Rio Grande do Sul (RS), Brasil. No rebanho foram observados mau estado de nutrição, comportamento inquieto, prurido, queda de lã, lesões crostosas amareladas na pele com exsudato nas bordas, eritema perilesional e presença de lã presa entre os dentes. O hemograma mostrou marcada eosinofilia e um raspado cutâneo demonstrou a presença de P. ovis no exame parasitológico. No exame histopatológico, oriundo de uma biópsia de pele, observou-se dermatite pustular eosinofílica. O tratamento consistiu de duas administrações de ivermectina a 1% na dose de 1ml/33kg de peso corporal por via subcutânea em um intervalo de 10 dias. Este é primeiro estudo relatando a ocorrência, sinais clínicos e achados laboratoriais/histopatológicos da sarna psoróptica em uma propriedade de criação de ovinos no RS.

The present study evaluated the efficacy of a single oral dose of doramectin in the control of Psoroptes ovis and Leporacarus gibbus in naturally infested rabbits. Sixteen adult rabbits were selected and distributed in two experimental groups. The treated group received 200 µg/Kg of oral doramectin and the control group received the same volume of saline solution. The diagnosis of the mites was made with a stereoscopic microscope. Hairs from the dorsal part of the neck, lumbar right, lumbar left, ventral side of the tail and ventral abdomen were evaluated for L. gibbus, and ear wax evaluated for P. ovis. The evaluation of the efficiency and the clinical assessment of the lesions was made in days 0, +3, +7, +14, +21, +28, and +35 after treatment. An efficacy of 75% and 87,5% was observed for L. gibbus in days +3 and +7 after treatment, an efficacy of 100% was observed in days +14, + 21, +28 e +35. An efficacy of 100% for the control of P. ovis was observed following day +7. The clinical lesion score of the control group remained unaltered, except for one animal which conditions worsened during experimentation. In the treated group animals, regression of the lesions was observed following day +3, and on day +21 no signal of infestation by P. ovis was present. None of the animals from the treated group presented secondary collateral effects caused by the doramectin, which proved itself as an optimal alternative for mite control in naturally infested rabbits.(AU)


O objetivo do trabalho foi avaliar a eficácia da doramectina administrada por via oral no controle de Psoroptes ovis e Leporacarus gibbus em coelhos naturalmente infestados. Foram selecionados 16 coelhos adultos, distribuídos em dois grupos experimentais, compondo oito animais por grupo. O grupo tratado foi medicado com 200µg/kg de doramectina por via oral, enquanto que no grupo controle foi administrado o mesmo volume de solução salina. O diagnóstico dos ácaros foi realizado com auxílio de microscópio estereoscópico. Foram coletados pelos das regiões do pescoço dorsal, lombar direita, lombar esquerda, cauda ventral e abdômen ventral para avaliação de L. gibbus e para P. ovis foi coletado cerúmen das orelhas com auxílio de zaragatoas. A avaliação da eficácia e a avaliação clínica das lesões, mensuradas em escores (grau 0 a 4), foi realizada nos dias 0, +3, +7, +14, +21, +28 e +35, após o tratamento. Foi observada eficácia de 75% e 87,5% no controle de L. gibbus nos dias +3 e +7 após o tratamento, sendo observada eficácia de 100% nos dias +14, + 21, +28 e +35. Foi observada eficácia de 100% no controle de P. ovis a partir do dia +7, permanecendo até o final do período observacional. O escore das lesões clínicas no grupo controle permaneceu de forma inalterada, exceto em um animal que piorou ao longo dos dias experimentais, enquanto nos animais do grupo tratado regrediu a partir do dia +3 e já no dia +21 após o tratamento, os animais apresentavam-se sem sinais da infestação por P. ovis. Nenhum animal do grupo tratado apresentou quaisquer efeitos colaterais secundários causados pela doramectina, que se mostrou uma ótima alternativa para o controle dos ácaros em coelhos naturalmente parasitados.(AU)

O objetivo do trabalho foi avaliar a eficácia da ivermectina administrada por via oral no controle de Psoroptes ovis e Leporacarus gibbus em coelhos naturalmente infestados. Foram selecionados 20 coelhos adultos, distribuídos na mesma proporção de ambos os sexos, em dois grupos experimentais, compondo dez animais por grupo. No grupo controle foi administrado o mesmo volume do tratamento de solução salina, enquanto o grupo tratado recebeu dose única de ivermectina oral (400 µg/Kg). O diagnóstico dos ácaros foi realizado com auxílio de microscópio estereoscópico após a devida coleta de material. Para P. ovis foi realizada através de coleta do cerúmen com auxílio de zaragatoas efetuadas nas orelhas e para por L. gibbus foi realizada coleta de pelos nas regiões do pescoço dorsal, lombar direita, lombar esquerda, cauda ventral e abdômen ventral. A avaliação da eficácia e a avaliação clínica das lesões, mensuradas em escores (grau 0 a 4) foi realizada nos dias 0, +3, +7, +14, +21, +28 e + 35, após o tratamento. Foi observada a eficácia de 100% no controle de P. ovis a partir do dia +7 e para L. gibbus a partir do dia +14, mantendo-se negativos até o final do período experimental. O escore da lesão das orelhas do grupo tratado regrediu a partir do dia +14 e no dia +21 todos os animais atingiram grau 0. No grupo controle, dois animais apresentaram aumento no escore da lesão das orelhas, um coelho apresentou aumento do escore de grau 1 para 2 e outro coelho de grau 3 para 4. Não foram observadas quaisquer reações adversas nos animais tratados. A ivermectina administrada por via oral em dose única foi eficaz no controle de P. ovis e L. gibbus em coelhos naturalmente infestados...


The aim of the study was to evaluate the efficacy of oral ivermectin in the control of Psoroptes ovis and Leporacarus gibbus in naturally infested rabbits. Twenty adult rabbits were selected; they were distributed in two groups with equal proportions of both sexes, containing ten animals per group. In the control group the same volume of the treatment was administered of saline solution, meanwhile the treated group received a single dose of oral ivermectin (400µg/kg). The diagnosis of the mites was made with a stereoscopic microscope, after the proper collection of material. For P. ovis it was performed by collecting of ear wax with swabs and for L. gibbus it was performed by collecting hairs in the dorsal part of the neck, lumbar right, lumbar left, ventral side of the tail and ventral abdomen. The evaluation of the efficiency and the clinical evaluation of the lesions, measured in scores (grade 0 to 4) was made in days 0, +3, +7, +4, +21, +28, and +35, after treatment. An efficiency of 100% was observed for P. ovis following day +7, and for L. gibbus following day +14, remaining negative until the final day of the study. The score of lesions in the ears of the treated group regressed following day +14 and on day +21 all animals reached a score of 0. In the control group, two animals presented an increase in ear lesion score, one rabbit presented an increase from score 1 to 2, and the other rabbit, from score 3 to 4. No adverse reactions were observed in the treated animals. The single dose administration of oral ivermectin was successful in the control of P. ovis and L. gibbus in naturally infested rabbits...

Esta pesquisa teve como objetivos avaliar a eficiência da técnica do jato de água, com 50 e 100ml de água, para determinar a prevalência da infecção por Psoroptes cuniculi e estimar o grau de infestação para estudos da dinâmica populacional. O estudo foi realizado no matadouro municipal da cidade de Patos, Paraíba, com 30 caprinos de ambos os sexos e idades variadas. O conduto auditivo esquerdo de cada caprino foi lavado com 100ml de água e o direito, com 50ml. Os ácaros coletados na lavagem e os ácaros obtidos após a abertura dos condutos auditivos foram contados e identificados de acordo com o estádio do ciclo biológico do parasito. Mediante a técnica da lavagem com 100mL, foi identificado o parasita em 22 (91%) dos 24 condutos infectados e, na lavagem com 50mL, foi identificado em 18 (78,3%) de 23 condutos infectados (P>0,05). Após a abertura e contagem do total de ácaros, verificou-se que, na lavagem, haviam sido recuperados de 19% a 35% dos ácaros de todos os estádios de desenvolvimento, exceto para o estádio de ovo, que foi de 11% a 15%, não havendo diferença estatística significativa (P>0,05) entre as taxas de recuperação com 50 e 100mL de água. Conclui-se que a técnica da lavagem do conduto auditivo é eficiente para estudos da prevalência da otocariase, porém, para estudos de dinâmica populacional, recomenda-se a abertura dos condutos auditivos e a contagem de todos os ácaros presentes.


The aim of this study was to evaluate the technique of washing the auditory canal (ear flushing technique) either with 50 or 100mL of water to determine the prevalence of the infection by Psoroptes cuniculi and to estimate the degree of infestation for population dynamics studies. The experiment was conducted in a slaughterhouse in the city of Patos, state of Paraiba, northeastern Brazil, with 30 goats of different ages and both sexes. Left auditory canal of each goat was washed with 100mL of water, and the right with 50mL. Later, the auditory canals were opened to count the remaining parasites. The mites recovered by washing and those recovered after opening the auditory canals were counted and identified in accordance with the stage of development. No significant differences (P=5.81) were found in the prevalence of the infection between the auditory canals washed with 50mL (78.3%), and those washed with 100mL (91%). After opening the auditory canals it was determined that the parasites recovered by washing represented 19% to 35% of the total parasites of the auditory canal for all stages of development, except for the eggs, which varied from 11% to 15% of recovering, with no significant differences (P>0,05) between the auditory canals washed with 50 or 100mL. It is concluded that the technique of washing the auditory canals with 50 or 100mL of water in goats is efficient to study the prevalence of infection by P. cuniculi, however the intensity of the infection and the population dynamics should be studied in slaughtered goats by opening the auditory canals to count the different stages of the parasite.

The aim of the present study was to evaluate the efficacy of the d-phenothrin/pyriproxyfen association against Psoroptes ovis, Cheyletiella parasitivorax, and Leporacarus gibbus infestations in naturally co-infested rabbits. Twenty crossbreed (New Zealand White x California) rabbits concurrently infested by the three mite species were randomly divided in two groups. All rabbits presented with hyperemia, erythema and formation of crusts in the ear canals caused by P. ovis. Infestations by both C. parasitivorax and L. gibbus were considered asymptomatic in all animals.Ten animals were treated with a 4.4% d-phenothrin and 0.148% pyriproxyfen spray formulation until have their body surface uniformly sprayed, including external ear canals. The other ten rabbits remained untreated, serving as control group. Observations were done on days +7, +14, +21, +28, and +35 post-treatment. The d-phenothrin/pyriproxyfen association showed 100% efficacy against the three mite species and was responsible for the remission of psoroptic mange lesions on treated animals. No signs of intoxication were observed. The results indicate that d-phenothrin/pyriproxyfen spray formulation in a single application is an effective and clinically safe option for the control of different mite infestations in rabbits.


O objetivo do presente estudo foi avaliar a eficácia da associação de d-fenotrina e piriproxifen no controle de infestações simultâneas por Psoroptes ovis, Cheyletiella parasitivorax e Leporacarus gibbus em coelhos naturalmente co-infestados. Vinte coelhos mestiços (Nova Zelândia Branco x Califórnia) infestados simultaneamente pelas três espécies de ácaros foram divididos aleatoriamente em dois grupos. Todos os coelhos infestados por apresentavam eritema, hiperemia e formação de crostas nas orelhas, causados por P. ovis. Infestações simultâneas por C. parasitivorax e L. gibbus foram considerados assintomáticas em todos os animais. Dez animais foram tratados com uma formulação spray contendo d-fenotrina a 4,4% e piriproxifen a 0,148%, pulverizando toda a superfície corporal de forma uniforme, incluindo a face interna das orelhas. Os outros 10 coelhos não foram t ratados, sendo mantidos como grupo controle. Os animais foram avaliados nos dias 7, 14, 21, 28 e 35 pós-tratamento. A associação de d-fenotrina e piriproxifen foi 100% eficaz no controle das três espécies de ácaros e foi responsável pela remissão das lesões de sarna psoróptica nos animais tratados. Não foram observados sinais de intoxicação. Os resultados indicam que a formulação spray de d-fenotrina e piriproxifen em uma única aplicação é uma opção clinicamente segura e eficaz no controle de infestações por ácaros em coelhos.

O objetivo do presente estudo foi avaliar a eficácia de uma emulsão contendo 10% de óleo de nim, Azadirachta indica, no controle de Psoroptes ovis em coelhos naturalmente infestados. Foram utilizados 12 coelhos separados aleatoriamente em dois grupos de seis animais cada. O grupo controle permaneceu sem tratamento, enquanto que o grupo tratado recebeu a formulação em teste, contendo 10% de Nim, borrifando ambos os condutos auditivos, uma vez ao dia, por sete dias consecutivos. Os animais foram avaliados diariamente para observação de possíveis efeitos adversos do produto. Nos dias +3, +7, +14,+21, +28 e +35 foi coletado material de todos os animais para avaliação da presença de ácaros vivos. Os coelhos do grupo controle apresentavam ácaros em ambos os condutos auditivos em todos os dias de observação. O grupo tratado apresentou eficácia de 41,7% no dia +3 e 100% a partir do dia +7 até o dia +35. O produto demonstrou ser eficaz no tratamento da sarna psoróptica em coelhos. Entretanto, todos os animais tratados apresentaram reações dermatológicas, tais como alopecia e hiperemia no local de aplicação do produto, variando de baixa a média severidade.


The objective of the present study was to evaluate the efficacy of an emulsion containing 10% of neem (Azadirachta indica) oil on the control of Psoroptes ovis in naturally infested rabbits. Twelve rabbits were randomly divided in two groups of six animals. The control group remained without treatment; while animals in the other group were treated with the 10% neem extract formulation by spraying both ears daily for seven consecutive days. The animals were evaluated daily for the presence of adverse effects. Material from ears all animals was collected on days +3, +7, +14, +21, +28 and +35, and evaluated for the presence of living mites. Animals from control group presented mites in both ears along all days of observation. The treated group presented an efficacy of 41.7% on day +3 and 100% from day +7 to +35. The product containing 10% neem oil has demonstrated to be effective for the treatment of psoroptic mange on rabbits. However, treated animals presented dermatological reaction such as alopecia and hyperemia at the site of application, varying from low to medium severity.
