INTRODUCTION: Hyperbaric oxygen has been used as a medical treatment tool in hyperbaric chambers and is an integral part of professional and combat divers' activity. In extreme cases, exposure to hyperbaric oxygen can develop central nervous system oxygen toxicity (CNS-OT), which leads to seizures and eventually death. CNS-OT is caused by neuronal hyperactivity due to high oxygen levels, potentially damaging brain cells including the blood-brain barrier (BBB). However, the effect of hyperbaric oxygen levels on the healthy BBB has not been characterized directly yet. METHODS: Six or three different groups of ~ eight rats or mice, respectively, were exposed to increasing levels of partial pressure of oxygen (0.21 to 5 ATA) in a hyperbaric chamber, followed by MRI scanning with gadolinium. Statistical significance (adjusted p-value ≤ 0.05) was assessed using linear regression and ordinary one-way (rats) or two-way (mice) ANOVA with correction of multiple comparison tests. In rats, the effect of 100% oxygen at 5 ATA was independently validated using FITC-Dextran (5 kDa). Statistical significance (p-value ≤ 0.05) was assessed using Welch's t-test and effect size was calculated by Cohen's D. RESULTS: In rats, analyzed MRI scans showed a significant trend of increase in the % gadolinium in brain tissues as a result of hyperbaric oxygen pressures (p-value = 0.0079). The most significant increase was measured at 4 ATA compared to air (adjusted p-value = 0.0461). Significant increased FITC-Dextran levels were measured in the rats' brains under 100% oxygen at 5 ATA versus air (p-value = 0.0327; Effect size = 2.0). In mice, a significant increase in gadolinium penetration into the hippocampus and frontal cortex was measured over time (adjusted p-value < 0.05) under 100% oxygen at 3 and 5 ATA versus air, and between the treatments (adjusted p-value < 0.0001). CONCLUSIONS: The BBB is increasingly disrupted due to higher levels of hyperbaric oxygen in rodents, indicating a direct relation between hyperbaric oxygen and BBB dysregulation for the first time. We suggest considering this risk in different diving activities, and protocols using a hyperbaric chamber. On the other hand, this study highlights the potential therapeutic usage of hyperbaric oxygen for controlled drug delivery through the BBB into brain tissues in different brain-related diseases.

Aim This study aimed to assess the impact of forced repeated swimming stress on serum adiponectin and endothelin-1 levels in Wistar rats, comparing the effects between those fed a standard diet and those on a high-fat diet. Methods Twenty adult male Wistar rats were divided into two dietary groups: a standard food diet group (NFD, n=10) and a high-fat diet group (HFD, n=10). Both groups underwent daily forced swimming stress for six days, with durations increasing from 5 to 30 minutes. The protocol finished in an acute bout of swimming exercise on the seventh day with a duration of 40 minutes. Adherence to ethical guidelines was strictly maintained, and serum adiponectin and endothelin-1 levels were measured pre- and post-exercise using the ELISA method. Results Before swimming, the mean adiponectin levels were 4.30±1.50 ng/mL in the NFD group and 3.53±0.70 ng/mL in the HFD group. Post-exercise, these levels significantly decreased to 2.4±0.84 ng/mL (p=0.003) and 1.58±0.23 ng/mL (p=0.001), respectively. Endothelin-1 levels also showed significant decreases from 0.86 pg/mL (0.74-0.87) to 0.49 pg/mL (0.43-0.62) (p=0.003) in the NFD group, and from 0.89 pg/mL (0.86-0.93) to 0.69 pg/mL (0.60-0.75) (p=0.027) in the HFD group after swimming. Conclusion The study highlighted the significant effects of forced swimming stress on lowering serum adiponectin and endothelin-1 levels in Wistar rats, with more pronounced decreases observed in rats on a high-fat diet. The results of the study suggest the potential of exercise as a crucial component of strategies aimed at managing obesity and improving cardiovascular health, emphasizing the interaction between physical stress and dietary factors on metabolic and cardiovascular biomarkers.

Hypobaric Hypoxia (HH) negatively affects the cardiovascular and respiratory systems as well as gonadal development and the therefore next generation. This study investigated the effects of HH on zebrafish and SD rats, by exposing them to a low-pressure environment at 6,000m elevation for 30 days to simulate high-altitude conditions. It was indicated that parental zebrafish reared amh under HH had increased embryo mortality, reduced hatchability, and abnormal cartilage development in the offspring. Furthermore, the HH-exposed SD rats had fewer reproductive cells and smaller litters. Moreover, the transcriptome analysis revealed the down-regulation of steroid hormone biosynthesis pathways. The expression of the gonad-associated genes (amh, pde8a, man2a2 and lhcgr), as well as the gonad and cartilage-related gene bmpr1a, were also down-regulated. In addition, Western blot analysis validated reduced bmpr1a protein expression in the ovaries of HH-treated rats. In summary, these data indicate the negative impact of HH on reproductive organs and offspring development, emphasizing the need for further research and precautions to protect future generations' health.

AIM: To investigate the underlying mechanism of dry environment (autumn dryness) affecting the lacrimal glands in rats. METHODS: Twenty Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly divided into two groups. The rats were fed in specific pathogen free environment as the control group (n=10), and the rats fed in dry environment as the dryness group (n=10). After 24d, lacrimal glands were collected from the rats. The tissues morphology was observed by hematoxylin-eosin (HE) staining. Tandem mass tags (TMT) quantitative proteomics analysis technology was used to screen the differential expressed proteins of lacrimal glands between the two groups, then bioinformatics analysis was performed. Further, the immunohistochemical (IHC) method was used to verify the target proteins. RESULTS: In dryness group, the lacrimal glands lobule atrophied, the glandular cavities enlarged, the sparse nuclear distribution and scattered inflammatory infiltration between the acinus were observed. The proteomics exhibited that a total of 195 up-regulated and 236 down-regulated differential expressed proteins screened from the lacrimal glands of rats. It was indicated that the biological processes (BP) of differential expressed proteins mainly included cell processes and single BP. The cellular compositions of differential expressed proteins mainly located in cells, organelles. The molecular functions of differential expressed proteins mainly included binding, catalytic activity. Moreover, the Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) pathway analysis showed that the differential expressed proteins mainly involved lysosome, complement and coagulation cascade, and ribosome pathway. The IHC result verified that the up-regulated expression proteins of Protein S100A9 (S100A9), Annexin A1 (Anxa1), and Clusterin (Clu) in lacrimal glands of rats in dryness group were higher than control group. CONCLUSION: The up-regulated expression proteins of S100A9, Anxa1, and Clu may be the potential mechanisms of dry eye symptoms caused by dry environment. This study provides clues of dry environments causing eye-related diseases for further studies.

Acute carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning may cause liver damage and liver dysfunction. Therefore, in this study, we aimed to compare the efficiency of normobaric (NBO) and high flow nasal cannula oxygen (HFNCO) treatments on liver injury. For that purpose, twenty-eight male Wistar albino rats were divided into four groups (Control, CO, CO + NBO, CO + HFNCO). The control group was allowed to breath room air for 30 min. Acute CO poisoning in CO, CO + NBO, CO + HFNCO was induced by CO exposure for 30 min. Thereafter, NBO group received 100% normobaric oxygen with reservoir mask for 30 min. HFNCO group received high-flow oxygen through nasal cannula for 30 min. At the end of the experiment, all animals were sacrificed by cardiac puncture under anesthasia. Serum liver function tests were measured. Liver tissue TAS, TOS and OSI levels, tissue histomorphology and immunoexpression levels of Bax, Caspase 3, TNF-α, IL-1ß, and NF-κB were also examined. Our observations indicated that acute CO poisoning caused significant increases in blood COHb, serum AST, ALT, ALP, total protein, albumin, globulin levels but a decrease in albumin to globulin ratio (all, p < 0.05). Furthermore, acute CO poisoning significantly increased the OSI value, and the immunoexpresssion of Bax, Caspase 3, TNF-α, IL-1ß, and NF-κB in liver tissue (all, p < 0.05). These pathological changes in serum and liver tissue were alleviated through both of the treatment methods. In conclussion, both the NBO and HFNCO treatments were beneficial to alleviate the acute CO poisoning associated with liver injury and dysfunction.

The aim of this study was to investigate how dietary modifications with pomegranate seed oil (PSO) and bitter melon aqueous extract (BME) affect mineral content in the spleen of rats both under normal physiological conditions and with coexisting mammary tumorigenesis. The diet of Sprague-Dawley female rats was supplemented either with PSO or with BME, or with a combination for 21 weeks. A chemical carcinogen (7,12-dimethylbenz[a]anthracene) was applied intragastrically to induce mammary tumors. In the spleen of rats, the selected elements were determined with a quadrupole mass spectrometer with inductively coupled plasma ionization (ICP-MS). ANOVA was used to evaluate differences in elemental composition among experimental groups. Multivariate statistical methods were used to discover whether some subtle dependencies exist between experimental factors and thus influence the element content. Experimental factors affected the splenic levels of macroelements, except for potassium. Both diet modification and the cancerogenic process resulted in significant changes in the content of Fe, Se, Co, Cr, Ni, Al, Sr, Pb, Cd, B, and Tl in rat spleen. Chemometric analysis revealed the greatest impact of the ongoing carcinogenic process on the mineral composition of the spleen. The obtained results may contribute to a better understanding of peripheral immune organ functioning, especially during the neoplastic process, and thus may help develop anticancer prevention and treatment strategies.

Background The nephrotoxic side effects of gentamicin, a potent aminoglycoside antibiotic, significantly restrict its clinical use. Identifying compounds that can mitigate this nephrotoxicity is of paramount importance. The research examines how the ethanolic extract of Carica papaya seeds (EECPS) and isoliquiritigenin (ISL), a flavonoid separated from them, protect the kidneys and fight free radicals in gentamicin-treated Wistar albino rats. Methodology A total of 48 mature Wistar albino rats were divided into eight groups, with each group consisting of six rats. The experimental setup included a normal control group receiving oral saline as a negative control, and a standard control group administered gentamicin intraperitoneally (IP) at 100 mg/kg body weight for 13 days to induce nephrotoxicity, followed by oral silymarin at 100 mg/kg body weight as a positive control from days 14 to 21. A toxicant control group was exposed to gentamicin IP without subsequent treatment. Two test groups were given 400 mg/kg and 800 mg/kg of EECPS orally after being given gentamicin. Three other test groups were given 20 mg/kg, 40 mg/kg, and 80 mg/kg of ISL orally after being given gentamicin. Serum levels of creatinine, urea, and blood urea nitrogen (BUN) were used to test renal function. Malondialdehyde (MDA), nitric oxide (NO), and reduced glutathione (GSH), which are signs of oxidative stress, were also measured in renal tissues. Results Gentamicin administration markedly increased serum creatinine, urea, and BUN levels, confirming its nephrotoxic effect. Nephroprotection depended on the dose of EECPS and ISL used. It was found that 80 mg/kg of ISL had the most powerful effect, which was not what was thought at first. These treatments effectively reduced MDA and NO levels while enhancing GSH levels, exhibiting their strong antioxidant properties. Notably, the nephroprotective efficacy of these treatments exceeded that of silymarin, a known nephroprotective agent. Histopathological analysis confirmed reduced renal damage and enhanced tissue repair in the treated groups. Conclusions These findings demonstrate how effective EECPS and ISL are at shielding the kidneys from gentamicin-caused damage. They do this by acting as antioxidants and nephroprotectants. Their ability to protect kidney function and fight oxidative stress makes them interesting as possible treatments for gentamicin-related kidney damage. These results advocate for further investigation into the utility of these natural compounds in the management of nephrotoxicity.

Background: Limited data are available regarding perioperative outcomes in patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) who undergo robotic-assisted thoracic surgery (RATS) after neoadjuvant chemoimmunotherapy. This study aimed to compare the perioperative outcomes of RATS and video-assisted thoracic surgery (VATS) in NSCLC patients after neoadjuvant chemoimmunotherapy. Methods: The study involved consecutive NSCLC patients treated with minimally invasive surgery (MIS) after neoadjuvant chemoimmunotherapy at a high-volume single center from September 2020 to October 2022. Short-term effects, including demographic, perioperative and pathological parameters, were compared between the RATS group and the VATS group. Results: A total of 119 patients were included in this study. Of these, 33 (27.7%) patients received RATS and 86 (72.3%) patients received VATS. Major pathological response (MPR) and pathological complete response (pCR) rates were comparable between the two groups. The RATS group had a higher number of dissected lymph nodes (21 vs. 18, P=0.03) and lymph node stations (7 vs. 6, P=0.004) compared with the VATS group but no differences were found in perioperative outcomes. Conclusions: These findings suggest that both RATS and VATS are safe and feasible options for NSCLC patients who have received neoadjuvant chemoimmunotherapy. Furthermore, RATS may offer advantages over VATS in patients who require a more extensive lymph node dissection.

With the growth of the food industry, fructose, the intake of which increases with food, causes obesity and metabolic syndrome. Kidney damage may develop from metabolic syndrome. Selenium (Se) participates in the structure of antioxidant enzymes and has a medicinal effect. In this work, the protective impact of Se on kidney damage produced by high-fructose corn syrup (HFCS) via endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress was examined. The study comprised four groups, each consisting of ten experimental animals: control, HFCS (20%-HFCS), HFCS (20%-HFCS), + Se (0.3 mg/kg/day/po), and Se (0.3 mg/kg/day/po) alone. The duration of the experiment was 6 weeks. Kidney tissues were stained with hematoxylin and eosin for histological examination. Immunohistochemical analysis was conducted to assess TNF-α and caspase-3 levels. The spectrophotometric evaluation was performed to measure TOS (total oxidant status), TAS (total antioxidant status), and OSI (oxidative stress index) levels. The PERK, ATF4, CHOP, BCL-2, and caspase-9 gene expression levels were assessed by the RT-qPCR method. After Se treatment, histopathological abnormalities and TNF-α and caspase-3 levels in the HFCS+Se group decreased (p < 0.001). While TOS and OSI levels increased dramatically in the HFCS group, TAS values decreased significantly but improved after Se application (p < 0.001). The expression levels of the genes PERK, ATF4, CHOP, and caspase-9 were significantly lower in the HFCS group when compared to the HFCS+Se group (p < 0.05). Our findings suggest that Se may protect against ER stress, oxidative stress, apoptosis, and kidney damage caused by high-dose fructose consumption.

Polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) can alter adipose tissue function; however, the relative effects of plant and marine n3-PUFAs are less clear. Our objective was to directly compare the n3-PUFAs, plant-based α-linolenic acid (ALA) in flaxseed oil, and marine-based eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) or docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) in high-purity oils versus n6-PUFA containing linoleic acid (LA) for their effects on the adipose tissue and oral glucose tolerance of obese rats. Male fa/fa Zucker rats were assigned to faALA, faEPA, faDHA, and faLA groups and compared to baseline fa/fa rats (faBASE) and lean Zucker rats (lnLA). After 8 weeks, faEPA and faDHA had 11-14% lower body weight than faLA. The oral glucose tolerance and total body fat were unchanged, but faEPA had less mesenteric fat. faEPA and faDHA had fewer large adipocytes compared to faLA and faALA. EPA reduced macrophages in the adipose tissue of fa/fa rats compared to ALA and DHA, while faLA had the greatest macrophage infiltration. DHA decreased (~10-fold) T-cell infiltration compared to faBASE and faEPA, whereas faALA and faLA had an ~40% increase. The n3-PUFA diets attenuated tumour necrosis factor-α in adipose tissue compared to faBASE, while it was increased by LA in both genotypes. In conclusion, EPA and DHA target different aspects of inflammation in adipose tissue.

Recently, gold nanoparticles (Au Nps) have gained tremendous attention for its unique properties as a safe nanocarrier for delivering drugs that are used in different disease diagnoses. Although silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) have been generally applied due to their strong antibacterial, antiviral, antifungal, and antimicrobial properties, their toxicity is a subject of sustained debate, thus requiring further studies. The present study aims to evaluate the potential protective effect of gold nanoparticles and phthalocyanine-gold nanoconjugates (Pc-Au NCs) against the hepatorenal toxicity of silver nanoparticles in male rats. Herein, 60 adult male Rattus norvegicus rats were divided into six equal groups (n = 10/group); the first group was kept as control, the second received gold nanoparticles (Au NPs) intraperitoneally (10 µg/kg) daily for 3 weeks, the third group is gold-phthalocyanine (Pc-Au) group where rats were injected intraperitoneally with gold-phthalocyanine for 3 weeks (10 µg/kg), the fourth group received silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) (4 mg/kg) daily intraperitoneally for 3 weeks, the fifth group is silver + gold nanoparticles group (Ag + Au), and the sixth is silver + gold-phthalocyanine nanoconjugates (Ag + Pc-Au) group in which rats were intraperitoneally injected firstly with Ag NPs (4 mg/kg) for 3 weeks then with gold or gold-phthalocyanine for another 3 weeks (10 µg/kg). Our results revealed that Ag NPs could increase the serum AST, ALT, ALP, urea, creatinine, and lipid profile and significantly decreased the total protein and albumin. Moreover, histopathological alterations detected in the kidney and the liver of the Ag NPs group included vascular congestion, inflammatory cell infiltration, and tissue distortion. Alongside, exposure to Ag NPs induces hepatic and renal oxidative stress by suppressing the antioxidant-related genes including glutathione peroxidase 1 (gpx1), superoxide dismutase (sod), and catalase (cat). Ag NPs also upregulated the hepatic and renal genes involved in inflammation such as the interleukin-6 (il-6) and tumor necrosis factor-α (tnf-α), nuclear factor kappa B (nf-κß), apoptosis such as the BCL2 associated X (bax), casp3, and other related to metabolism including asparagine synthetase (asns), suppressor of cytokine signaling 3 (socs3), MYC proto-oncogene (myc), and C-C motif chemokine ligand 2 (ccl2). On the other hand, treatment with Au NPs and Pc-Au NCs could effectively ameliorate the hepatorenal damages induced by Ag NPs and improve liver and kidney architecture and function, especially in the Pc-Au NCs group. Briefly, our study revealed the underlined mechanism of Ag NPs hepatotoxic and nephrotoxic effects and that Pc-Au NCs could alleviate these adverse impacts via their anti-oxidative, anti-apoptotic, and anti-inflammatory activities.

A pre-clinical toxicological evaluation of herbal medicines is necessary to identify any underlying health-associated side effects, if any. BPGrit is an Ayurveda-based medicine prescribed for treating hypertensive conditions. High-performance liquid chromatography-based analysis revealed the presence of gallic acid, ellagic acid, coumarin, cinnamic acid, guggulsterone E, and guggulsterone Z in BPGrit. For sub-acute toxicity analysis of BPGrit, male and female Sprague-Dawley rats were given repeated oral gavage at 100, 300, and 1000 mg/kg body weight/day dosages for 28 days, followed by a 14-day recovery phase. No incidences of mortality, morbidity, or abnormal clinical signs were observed in BPGrit-treated rats throughout the study period. Also, the body weight and food consumption habits of the experimental animals did not change during the study duration. Hematological, biochemical, and histopathological analysis did not indicate any abnormal changes occurring in the BPGrit-treated rats up to the highest tested dose of 1000 mg/kg body weight/day. Finally, the study established the "no-observed-adverse-effect level" for BPGrit at >1000 mg/kg body weight/day in Sprague-Dawley rats.

The process of domestication, despite its short duration as it compared with the time scale of the natural evolutionary process, has caused rapid and substantial changes in the phenotype of domestic animal species. Nonetheless, the genetic mechanisms underlying these changes remain poorly understood. The present study deals with an analysis of the transcriptomes from four brain regions of gray rats (Rattus norvegicus), serving as an experimental model object of domestication. We compared gene expression profiles in the hypothalamus, hippocampus, periaqueductal gray matter, and the midbrain tegmental region between tame domesticated and aggressive gray rats and revealed subdivisions of differentially expressed genes by principal components analysis that explain the main part of differentially gene expression variance. Functional analysis (in the DAVID (Database for Annotation, Visualization and Integrated Discovery) Bioinformatics Resources database) of the differentially expressed genes allowed us to identify and describe the key biological processes that can participate in the formation of the different behavioral patterns seen in the two groups of gray rats. Using the STRING- DB (search tool for recurring instances of neighboring genes) web service, we built a gene association network. The genes engaged in broad network interactions have been identified. Our study offers data on the genes whose expression levels change in response to artificial selection for behavior during animal domestication.

Comparative proteomic analysis of kidney tissue from normotensive (WKY) and spontaneously hypertensive (SHR) rats revealed quantitative and qualitative changes in renal proteins. The number of renal proteins specific for WKY rats (blood pressure 110-120 mm Hg) was 13-16. There were 20-24 renal proteins specific for SHR (blood pressure 180 mm Hg and more). The total number of identified renal proteins common for both rat strains included 972-975 proteins. A pairwise comparison of all possible (SHR-WKY) variants identified 8 proteins specific only for normotensive (WKY) animals, and 7 proteins specific only for hypertensive ones (SHR). Taking into consideration their biological roles, the lack of some enzyme proteins in hypertensive rats (for example, biliverdin reductase A) reduces the production of molecules exhibiting antihypertensive properties, while the appearance of others (e.g. betaine-homocysteine S-methyltransferase 2, septin 2, etc.) can be interpreted as a compensatory reaction. Renal proteins with altered relative content (with more than 2.5-fold change) accounted for no more than 5% of all identified proteins. Among the proteins with an increased relative content in hypertensive animals, the largest group consisted of proteins involved in the processes of energy generation and carbohydrate metabolism, as well as antioxidant and protective proteins. In the context of the development of hypertension, the identified relative changes can apparently be considered compensatory. Among the proteins with the most pronounced decrease in the relative content in hypertensive rats, the dramatic reduction in acyl-CoA medium-chain synthetase-3 (ACSM3) appears to make an important contribution to the development of renal pathology in these animals.

Current study aims to assess the safety and efficacy of robot-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (RATS) for sizable mediastinal masses with a minimum diameter ≥6 cm, compared with video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) and open surgery. This study enrolled 130 patients with mediastinal tumors with no less than 6 cm diameter in Zhongnan Hospital, Wuhan University, including 33 patients who underwent RATS, 52 patients who underwent VATS and 45 patients who underwent open surgery. After classifying based on mass size and whether it has invaded or not, we compared their clinical characteristics and perioperative outcomes. There was no significant difference in age, gender, mass size, myasthenia gravis, mass location, pathological types (p > 0.05) in three groups. Patients undergoing open surgery typically presenting at a more advanced stage (p < 0.05). No obvious difference was discovered in the average postoperative length of stay, operation duration, chest tube duration and average postoperative day 1 drainage output between RATS group and VATS group (p > 0.05), while intraoperative blood loss in RATS group was significantly lower than VATS group (p = 0.046). Moreover, the postoperative length of stay, operation duration, chest tube duration and intraoperative blood loss in RATS group were significantly lower than open surgery group (p < 0.001). RATS is a secure and efficient approach for removing large mediastinal masses at early postoperative period. In comparison with VATS, RATS is associated with lower intraoperative blood loss. Compared with open surgery, RATS is also associated with shorter postoperative length of stay, operation duration, chest tube duration and intraoperative blood loss.

Micro/nanoplastics (MNPs) are emerging as environmental pollutants with potential threats to human health. The accumulation of MNPs in the body can cause oxidative stress and increase the risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD). With the aim to systematically evaluate the extent of MNPs-induced oxidative damage and serum biochemical parameters in rats and mice, a total of 36 eligible articles were included in this meta-analysis study. The results reported that MNPs can significantly increase the levels of oxidants such as reactive oxygen species (ROS) and malondialdehyde (MDA) (P < 0.05), and resulted in notable increase in serum biochemical parameters including aspartate aminotransferase (AST) and alanine aminotransferase (ALT) (P < 0.05). Conversely, MNPs significantly reduced levels of antioxidants such as superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione (GSH), glutathione peroxidase (GPx) and catalase (CAT) (P < 0.05). Subgroup analysis revealed that smaller MNPs with oral administration and prolonged treatment, were associated with more pronounced oxidative stress and enhanced serum biochemical parameters alteration. In addition, after affected by MNPs, the levels of ALT and AST in liver group (SMD = 2.26, 95% CI = [1.59, 2.94] and SMD = 3.10, 95% CI = [1.25, 4.94]) were higher than those in other organs. These comprehensive results provide a scientific foundation for devising strategies to prevent MNPs-induced damage, contributing to solution of this environmental and health challenge.

Segmentectomies involving the posterior basal segment (S10) of the lower lobe present a challenging surgical procedure due to anatomical complexities, especially when lesions extend towards the lateral basal segment (S9). We introduce a combined subsegmentectomy technique via a posterior approach for a lesion situated between S9b and S10b, which preserves subsegmental branches that do not affect the resection margin of the tumour and facilitates intersegmental division without extending dissection into the interlobar region. This technique, the goal of which is to reduce the extent of dissection and complex stapling, is expected to minimize pulmonary complications and intrathoracic adhesions without compromising oncological outcomes. By potentially mitigating challenges in an ipsilateral reoperation, this approach offers a valuable alternative for managing second lung cancers.

Background: The ancient science of life known as Ayurveda uses a variety of formulations or herbal compounds to treat a wide range of illnesses. Male infertility accounts for half of all infertility worldwide, and numerous etiological variables play a role. A pharmacologically active tobacco component called nicotine has a negative impact on male fertility and the reproductive system. Musalyadi Churna (MSC) is one of the polyherbal compound formulations mentioned in Ayurveda Classics for aphrodisiac therapy and recommended for the treatment of male infertility. Objective: The current study aims to evaluate the spermatogenic potential of MSC along with its protective effect against testicular degeneration induced by nicotine in rat models. Materials and Methods: Sixty adult Sprague-Dawley male rats were used in the experiment, which were divided into ten groups of six rats each. Nicotine was administered orally as disease control. The standard and vehicle control were also included along with study drug groups in which MSC was administered orally to the rats. The study was conducted for 70 days for each group with assessment of body weight and food consumption. After treatment, rats were weighed and sacrificed for evaluation of parameters like organ weight, epididymal sperm count, and sperm morphology along with histological assessment. The data were statistically evaluated using analysis of variance test and Bonferroni multiple-comparison range test to compare different treatment groups. Results and Conclusion: In the present study, MSC possesses substantial spermatogenic efficacy, and the result indicates that the study drug possesses a protective effect against nicotine-induced impaired testicular functions in rats, but further research to elucidate its exact mechanism of action is essential.

Rotenone is a naturally occurring plant product used as an insecticide, pesticide and piscicide. It is lipophilic in nature and can cross the blood-brain barrier and induce the degeneration of neurons. It inhibits the mitochondrial respiratory chain complex I and stops the transfer of electrons. It induces ROS generation, which impairs mitochondrial activity. Rotenone is a toxic agent which causes the death of neurons. The present review describes the effect of rotenone on neurodegeneration with an emphasis on behavioral, pathological and neuropathological components carried out on various experimental models such as cell lines, Drosophila melanogaster, mice and rats.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Osteoporosis is associated with bone microarchitecture alterations, and the depletion of estrogen during menopause is a major contributing factor to its development. The literature highlights the noteworthy role of gut microbiota in bone metabolism, particularly in the progression of osteoporosis. Periodontal disease leads to alveolar bone loss, which may be influenced by estrogen deficiency, and this mechanism is intricately associated with an imbalance in systemic microbiota. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of Bifidobacterium animalis subsp. lactis HN019 (B. lactis HN019) and Lacticaseibacillus casei 01 (L. casei 01) administrations on an osteoporosis animal model. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirty-three female rats were randomly divided into three groups: control (C-OVX), C-OVX-HN019 and C-OVX-LC01. All animals were ovariectomized. In groups C-OVX-HN019 and C-OVX-LC01, the probiotics were administered for 4 months. All animals were euthanized after 16 weeks from ovariectomy. Microtomographic, histopathological and immunohistochemical examinations were conducted on periodontal tissues, whereas histomorphometry, histopathological and immunohistochemical analyses were carried out on the intestine. The levels of estradiol were assessed in blood using an immunoenzymatic assay. The data were subjected to statistical analyses (p < .05). RESULTS: The C-OVX-LC01 group exhibited a significant reduction in alveolar bone porosity and an increase in connective tissue density compared to C-OVX (p < .05). The C-OVX-HN019 and C-OVX-LC01 groups presented reduced expression of TRAP and RANKL compared to the C-OVX (p < .05). The C-OVX group presented villi defects, mild neutrophil infiltration, decrease in both villous height and intestinal crypts and reduced expression of intestinal junctional epithelium markers e-cadherin and claudin 01 compared to C-OVX-HN019 and C-OVX-LC01 (p < .05). The C-OVX group had lower estradiol levels than C-OVX-HN019 and C-OVX-LC01 (p < .05). CONCLUSION: The probiotic therapy promoted a reduction in alveolar bone destruction and intestinal permeability as well as an increase in estradiol levels in ovariectomized rats. Specifically, the probiotic strain Lacticaseibacillus casei 01 exhibited greater effectiveness compared to Bifidobacterium animalis subsp. lactis HN019, indicating strain-dependent outcomes.
