RESUMO

Grape pomace (GP) and pecan shell (PS) are two by-products rich in phenolic compounds (PC), and dietary fiber (DF) that may be considered for the development of functional baked foods. In this study, four formulations with different GP:PS ratios (F1(8%:5%), F2(5%:5%), F3(5%:2%), F4(0%:5%), and control bread (CB)) were elaborated and characterized (physiochemical and phytochemical content). Also, their inner structure (SEM), changes in their FTIR functional group's vibrations, and the bioaccessibility of PC and sugars, including an in vitro glycemic index, were analyzed. Results showed that all GP:PS formulations had higher mineral, protein, DF (total, soluble, and insoluble), and PC content than CB. Additionally, PC and non-starch polysaccharides affected gluten and starch absorbance and pores distribution. In vitro digestion model showed a reduction in the glycemic index for all formulations, compared to CB. These findings highlight the possible health benefits of by-products and their interactions in baked goods.

RESUMO

This study investigated the potential applications of Enterococcus hirae MLG3-25-1 exopolysaccharides (EPS), with a focus on their isolation, identification, production, and functional characteristics. After the bacterial strain was cultured in De Man-Rogosa-Sharpe (MRS) medium containing 1% glucose at 37 °C, the EPS was refined, and the highest yield of 0.85 mg/mL was achieved at the 24-h incubation period. Enterococcus hirae MLG3-25-1 was found to be able to produce EPS. The study explored the microstructure of the EPS, which resembles polysaccharide sheets with smooth surfaces, through scanning electron microscope (SEM) analysis. Through Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) analysis, the chemical composition, aligning with glycosidic bond characteristics, has been deciphered. Furthermore, the antimicrobial and antibiofilm activities against pathogenic bacteria, particularly Bacillus sp., demonstrated potential applications in combating antibiotic resistance. The EPS exhibited notable antioxidant activity (89.36% DPPH scavenging), along with high water-holding capacity (575%), emulsifying activity, and flocculation activity, suggesting its potential as a stabilizing agent in the food industry. Overall, this study provides a comprehensive characterization of Enterococcus hirae MLG3-25-1 EPS, emphasizing its diverse applications in antimicrobial, antioxidant, and food-related industries. These findings lay the groundwork for further exploration and utilization of this EPS in various sectors.

RESUMO

While large-scale vegetation greening in China has substantially influenced global vegetation dynamics, the specific impact of this restoration on water use efficiency (WUE) remained inadequately understood. This study employed both the Geodetector and structural equation modeling (SEM) methods, utilizing the Lund-Potsdam-Jena (LPJ) Global Dynamic Vegetation Model, to explore the contributions of various driving factors to China's potential vegetation WUE from 1982 to 2019. The results indicated: (1) there existed considerable further potential for vegetation recovery nationwide. Among them, the Loess Plateau, Inner Mongolia Plateau, and northern Xinjiang had relatively high potential for vegetation recovery. This potential was further amplified by the significant prospects for enhancing WUE in these areas; (2) The application of the Geodetector method revealed that the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) explained over 40 % of the variation in potential vegetation WUE in China, exerting a greater influence than climatic factors. In arid/semi-arid regions, precipitation (PRE), NDVI, and vapor pressure deficit (VPD) significantly influenced WUE. Temperature (TEM) was the dominant factor affecting WUE in humid and humid/semi-humid regions; (3) Utilizing the SEM analysis method, it was evident that NDVI exerted the most substantial direct positive influence on potential vegetation WUE in China, whereas VPD and PRE had notable negative impacts. In arid/semi-arid regions, PRE emerged as the primary determinant of WUE. Conversely, in regions where water resources were not limiting, TEM and VPD exerted a more pronounced influence on potential vegetation WUE. This indicated that while vegetation restoration generally enhanced potential vegetation WUE, other factors such as PRE, TEM, and VPD played critical roles in different climatic zones, shaping the regional variations in WUE.

RESUMO

Three-dimensional (3D) reconstruction serves as a crucial instrument for the analysis of biological structures. In particular, a comprehensive and accurate 3D ultrastructural examination of rat sperm is vital for understanding and diagnosing male fertility issues and the underlying causes of infertility. In this study, we utilize the automated tape-collecting ultramicrotome scanning electron microscopy (ATUM-SEM) imaging technique, which is a highly effective method for 3D cellular ultrastructural analysis. Our findings reveal that during spermiogenesis, the volume of the nucleus significantly decreases, shrinking to just 10% of its original size. The acrosomal vesicles derived from the Golgi apparatus converge and elongate along the spermatid nucleus. These vesicles then attach to the nucleus via a cap-like structure, thereby defining the head side of the spermatozoa. In the initial stages of spermiogenesis, the mitochondria in spermatids are distributed beneath the cell membrane. As the process progresses, these mitochondria gradually migrate to the sperm tail, where they form the mitochondrial sheath. This sheath plays a crucial role in providing the energy required for the movement of the sperm. In addition, we reconstruct the mRNA-stroring structure-chromatoid body in sperm cells, which are cloud-like or net-like structures in the cytoplasm. The precise and comprehensive nature of 3D ultrastructural examination allows for a deeper understanding of the morphological process of spermiogenesis, thereby contributing to our knowledge of male fertility and the causes of infertility. Our research has significantly advanced the understanding of the 3D ultrastructure of sperm more comprehensively than ever before.

RESUMO

Aim: To assess the effects of SDF and SDF+KI treatment on enamel and dentin carious lesions in primary teeth using x-ray Microtomography (XMT) and back scattered scanning electron microscopy (BSE-SEM). Methods: Artificial enamel caries of 3 caries free primary teeth were created by immersion of the samples in 50 ml demineralization solution for 72 h. Three other teeth with natural dentin caries were selected. Both groups were divided into 3 subgroups: EC-Enamel Control; ES-Enamel with SDF application; ESK-Enamel with SDF followed by KI application; DC-Dentin Control; DS-Dentin with SDF application; DSK-Dentin with SDF followed by KI application. Each tooth was imaged using XMT at 3 time points: (1) Pretreatment; (2) after immersion in remineralization solution for 120 h, with or without SDF or SDF+KI; (3) after subsequent immersion in demineralization solution for 72 h. The change of radiopacities of the lesions in these time points were assessed from the XMT images. After the XMT scans, all teeth were investigated microscopically using BSE-SEM. Results: In EC, no change in linear attenuation coefficient (LAC) was observed after remineralization, but LAC reduction was observed after subsequent demineralization. For ES, thin layer of high LAC material was deposited on the enamel surface after remineralization, and further reduction of LAC was observed after demineralization. In ESK, the surface layer was lost after SDF+KI, and small reduction of LAC was observed after demineralization. In DC, no LAC change was observed after remineralization, but reduction of LAC was detected after demineralization. In DS, high LAC material was formed on the carious dentin surface and randomly inside the lesion. No further LAC change was found after demineralization. In DSK, thick layer of high LAC material was deposited on the carious surface and inside the dentinal tubules. No further LAC reduction was found after subsequent demineralization. Conclusion: SDF and SDF+KI did not protect artificial enamel under acid attack even though Ag products were deposited in the porous enamel. However, SDF and SDF+KI shows protective properties against acid challenges and Ag products are deposited in carious dentin lesion without tubular structure randomly; and within dentinal tubules when these structures are retained.

RESUMO

Introduction Zirconia is a widely used restorative material in dentistry due to its superior aesthetic and mechanical properties. The oral cavity is a complex ecosystem with various components, which affect the teeth, as well as artificial restorative materials. Various personal and professional interventions carried out can severely affect the properties of restorative materials, thus altering the longevity of the prosthesis; 1.23% acidulated phosphate fluoride (APF) gel is one such professionally applied topical fluoride agent used to prevent caries. The interaction of this APF gel with highly aesthetic restorative material such as zirconia crowns is unknown. Objective The objective of this study is the evaluation of the surface deterioration of prefabricated zirconia crowns on exposure to deionised water and 1.23% acidulated phosphate fluoride (APF) gel with field emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM) and mass loss analysis. Material and method Sixty prefabricated paediatric zirconia crowns were taken, 10 samples were immersed in deionised water, 40 samples were immersed in 1.23% APF gel and 10 samples were used as control. Surface morphology and mass loss analysis were carried out at time intervals of four minutes, 24 hours, 48 hours and 72 hours using FE-SEM and digital weighing machine. Results No visual change was observed in the samples immersed in deionised water at the time interval of 72 hours. There was a marked visual change in samples immersed in 1.23% APF gel at the time interval of four minutes to 72 hours; this change involved a loss of gloss to the appearance of chalkiness. FE-SEM analysis for the control group and samples immersed in deionised water showed a smooth, continuous, undisrupted top layer, while samples immersed in 1.23% APF gel showed changes ranging from surface etching, to pinhole porosities, to crack formation and disruption of the surface depending upon the exposure time. Conclusions On the immersion of zirconia crowns in an aqueous acidic medium of 1.23% APF gel, the crowns showed flaws, imperfections and uneven superficial layers. It has been observed that surface grains are disrupted and micropores have been formed. This degraded superficial surface when undergoes cyclic mechanical loading can accelerate the ageing phenomenon of zirconia. Mechanical forces along with a dynamic electrochemical environment can degrade the material properties of zirconia.

RESUMO

Due to metal toxicity, widespread industrialization has negatively impacted crop yield and soil quality. The current study was aimed to prepare and characterize biochar made from wood shavings of Pinus roxburghii and to determine the plant growth promoting and heavy metal detoxification of cadmium (Cd) and chromium (Cr) contaminated soil. FTIR SEM coupled with EDX characterization of biochar was performed; Cd and Cr were used at a rate of 20 mg/kg. Biochar was used at the rate of 50 mg/kg for various treatments. The completely randomized design (CRD) was used for the experiment and three replicates of each treatment were made. Various agronomic and enzymatic parameters were determined. The results indicated that all growth and enzymatic parameters were enhanced by the prepared biochar treatments. The most prominent results were observed in treatment T5 (in which shoot length, root length, peroxidase dismutase (POD), superoxide dismutase (SOD) catalyzes (CAT), and chlorophyll a and b increased by 28%, 23%, 40%, 41%, 42%, and 27%, respectively, compared to the control). This study demonstrated that biochar is a sustainable and cost-effective approach for the remediation of heavy metals, and plays a role in plant growth promotion. Farmers may benefit from the current findings, as prepared biochar is easier to deliver and more affordable than chemical fertilizers. Future research could clarify how to use biochar optimally, applying the minimum amount necessary while maximizing its benefits and increasing yield.

RESUMO

Introduction: Our work aims at establishing a proof-of-concept for a method that allows the early prediction of the bactericidal and bacteriostatic effects of antibiotics on bacteria using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) as compared to traditional culture-based methods. Methods: We tested these effects using Imipenem (bactericidal) and Doxycycline (bacteriostatic) with several strains of sensitive and resistant Escherichia coli. We developed a SEM-based predictive score based on three main criteria: Bacterial Density, Morphology/Ultrastructure, and Viability. We determined the results for each of these criteria using SEM micrographs taken with the TM4000Plus II-Tabletop-SEM (Hitachi, Japan) following an optimized, rapid, and automated acquisition and analysis protocol. We compared our method with the traditional culture colony counting gold standard method and classic definitions of the two effects. Results: Our method revealed total agreement with the CFU method and classic definition by visualizing the effect of the antibiotic at 60 minutes and 120 minutes using SEM. Discussion: This early prediction allows a rapid and early identification of the bactericidal and bacteriostatic effects as compared to culture that would take a minimum of 18 hours. This has several future applications in the development of SEM-automated assays coupled to machine learning models that identify the antibiotic effect and facilitate determination of bacterial susceptibility.

RESUMO

Several studies have demonstrated that low-dimensional structures (e.g., two-dimensional (2D)) associated with three-dimensional (3D) perovskite films enhance the efficiency and stability of perovskite solar cells. Here, we aim to track the formation sites of the 2D phase on top of the 3D perovskite and to establish correlations between molecular stiffness and steric hindrance of the organic cations and their influence on the formation and crystallization of 2D/3D. Using cathodoluminescence combined with a scanning electron microscopy technique, we verified that the formation of the 2D phase occurs preferentially on the grain boundaries of the 3D perovskite. This helps explain some passivation mechanisms conferred by the 2D phase on 3D perovskite films. Furthermore, by employing in situ grazing-incidence wide-angle X-ray scattering, we monitored the formation and crystallization of the 2D/3D perovskite using three cations with varying molecular stiffness. In this series of molecules, the formation and crystallization of the 2D phase are found to be dependent on both steric hindrance around the ammonium group and molecular stiffness. Finally, we employed a 2D/3D perovskite heterointerface in a solar cell. The presence of the 2D phase, particularly those formed from flexible cations, resulted in a maximum power conversion efficiency of 21.5%. This study provides insight into critical aspects related to how bulky organic cations' stiffness and steric hindrance influence the formation, crystallization, and distribution of 2D perovskite phases.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Equitable access to healthcare for rural, tribal, and underprivileged people has been an emerging area of interest for researchers, academicians, and policymakers worldwide. Improving equitable access to healthcare requires innovative interventions. This calls for clarifying which operational model of a service innovation needs to be strengthened to achieve transformative change and bring sustainability to public health interventions. The current study aimed to identify the components of an operational model of mobile medical units (MMUs) as an innovative intervention to provide equitable access to healthcare. METHODS: The study empirically examined the impact of scalability, affordability, replicability (SAR), and immunization performance on the sustainability of MMUs to develop a framework for primary healthcare in the future. Data were collected via a survey answered by 207 healthcare professionals from six states in India. Partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) was conducted to empirically determine the interrelationships among various constructs. RESULTS: The standardized path coefficients revealed that three factors (SAR) significantly influenced immunization performance as independent variables. Comparing the three hypothesized relationships demonstrates that replicability has the most substantial impact, followed by scalability and affordability. Immunization performance was found to have a significant direct effect on sustainability. For evaluating sustainability, MMUs constitute an essential component and an enabler of a sustainable healthcare system and universal health coverage. CONCLUSION: This study equips policymakers and public health professionals with the critical components of the MMU operational model leading toward sustainability. The research framework provides reliable grounds for examining the impact of scalability, affordability, and replicability on immunization coverage as the primary public healthcare outcome.

RESUMO

Fiber-reinforced polymer composites are preferred over conventional materials because of their superior strength and modulus. Previously limited due to high manufacturing costs, synthetic fibers have been replaced by some natural fibers, such as waste wheat straw fibers. Here, epoxy-based polymer composites' mechanical and physical properties have been investigated, focusing on fiber weight ratios for both treated and untreated fiber. The research found that treated fibers display more effective mechanical qualities than untreated fibers, with a higher tensile strength of 54.4 MPa. The untreated Wheat Straw-Glass fiber reinforced composite has a less tensile strength of 26.3 MPa (10 wt% fiber). Pure resin-based composite has the most minor tensile strength at 1.52 MPa. The highest flexural strength obtained for hybrid composite is 88.76 MPa for treated fiber with epoxy resin and 49.6 MPa for untreated 30 wt % fiber. At the same time, the sole epoxy resin composite has the lowest value of 10.60 MPa. Untreated fiber (30 wt%) has the highest impact energy of 8J. Untreated wheat straw fiber absorbs more water due to its hydrophilic nature. In contrast, treated fiber exhibits better bonding and minimal water content, and the sole epoxy resin composite exhibits hydrophobic properties, resulting in less water absorption. The treated fiber displays better bonding than the untreated fiber throughout the SEM analysis. Wheat Straw fiber is mainly used for biodegradable plastic formation, housing construction, building materials, etc.

RESUMO

The data presented in this article is based on a questionnaire survey regarding e-commerce and business digitalization of SMEs in Mexico answered by the CEOs of the companies. A valid sample of 4121 Mexican SMEs was collected covering many industries, such as primary sector, extractive industries, manufacturing industries, energy, water, recycling, construction, trade, services, and others. The data includes information about the implementation of e-commerce, business digitalization, operational efficiency, corporate performance, and other demographic indicators of the sampling firms. The link between e-commerce and corporate performance is still underexplored in SMEs, even more so between companies from Latin America, being Mexico a perfect example to explore how different SMEs adapt and thrive due to the rapid growth of their e-commerce and the diversity of their business sectors (Santos-Jaén et al., 2023 [2]). Data analysis was conducted using SPSS and Smart PLS. The data are useful as the data can be reproduced, reused and reanalyzed paying special attention to group-specific effects. This data article also opens up better research opportunities going forward through collaboration with other researchers.

RESUMO

The structural characteristics, chemical composition, and element spatial distribution in MgxZn1-xO ceramics were investigated using X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, Auger electron spectroscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, and cathodoluminescence techniques. The study revealed that the morphology of the ceramic samples, as well as the mechanism of solid solution formation, depend on the relative contribution of both oxides in the charge. It was discovered that hexagonal and cubic phases of the solid solution were found to form simultaneously. An increase in the MgO content in the charge results in the magnesium content rise in the hexagonal grains continuously, reaching approximately 13 at.%. It was discovered an enrichment of grain boundaries with zinc and magnesium playing a significant role in doping ZnO and MgO grains. Obtained results allowed to propose two mechanisms involved in the formation of solid solution ceramics: i) diffusion of Mg and Zn along grain boundaries, followed by their incorporation into ZnO or MgO grains, respectively, and ii) interdiffusion of Mg into ZnO and Zn into MgO due to direct contact of ZnO and MgO grains. The second mechanism appears to dominate when both ZnO and MgO contribute comparably, increasing the probability of their direct contact. This study significantly advances the understanding of the process of the formation of MgxZn1-xO ceramics under thermodynamic conditions. These insights are crucial for optimizing the doping process and improving the material properties, thereby promoting innovations in the ceramics industry.

RESUMO

Microplastics (MPs) severely threaten inland waterbodies due to the direct impact of human activities. In the present study, spatial and temporal patterns of MPs in a shallow tropical lake were assessed, describing their size, morphology, and polymer types. Water and sediment samples were collected from Lake Chapala during three seasons, and MPs were quantified with a stereomicroscope. The structure, elemental composition, and polymeric composition were determined via environmental scanning electron microscopy and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The highest average concentration of microplastics in Lake Chapala was detected during the low-water period in April 2022 (2.35 items/L), exceeding the July 2022 rainy season concentration (1.8 items/L) by 0.25 items/L, and sediment concentrations were also higher in April 2022 (219 items/kg) compared to July 2022 (210 items/kg). This study highlights the significant pollution of Lake Chapala with microplastics, emphasizing the need for urgent measures to manage plastic waste and mitigate its environmental impact on aquatic ecosystems. PRACTITIONER POINTS: Microplastic contamination was evaluated in Lake Chapala. The distribution profiles of microplastics were different in each area. Heavy metals osmium, tellurium, and rhodium were found associated with the PMs. Polymers were found in this study.

RESUMO

A recent scientific investigation has shown promising results of selenium nanoparticles (SeNPs) for the anticancer and antimicrobial activities. This study aims to evaluate the effects of PVP SeNPs on bacterial strains, including Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus), Bacillus cereus (B. cereus), Klebsiella pneumoniae (K. pneumoniae), Escherichia coli (E. coli), and Pseudomonas aeruginosa (P. aeruginosa). Also, its antitumor activity against the MRC-5 carcinoma cell line. SeNPs were prepared via gamma irradiation using PVP as a capping agent, and their size and morphological structure were determined using HRTEM. The size of the SeNPs ranged from 36 to 66.59 nm. UV-vis spectra confirmed the formation of SeNPs, while FTIR measurement confirmed a change in the PVP structure after adding selenium nanoparticles. The highest effect was reported on HepG2 by an IC50 with a value of 8.87 µg/ml, followed by HeLa, PC3, MCF-7, and Caco2 cell lines, respectively. Furthermore, ZOI reached 36.33 ± 3.05 mm. The best value of the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) was 0.313 µg/ml. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) imaging against bacteria showed deformations and distortions in their structures. Transmission electron (TEM) revealed ultrastructure changes in treated bacteria because of the free radicals that made cytotoxicity which confirmed by Electron spin resonance (ESR).

RESUMO

Of the six juniper species found in the Bulgarian flora, three of the species have controversial taxonomic positions. Juniperus pygmaea K. Koch and J. sibirica Burgsd. exhibit similar morphological characteristics to J. communis L. in terms of leaves and female cones (galbuli). This is one of the reasons why, in the recent taxonomic developments, J. pygmaea and J. sibirica were united in a common variety of J. communis, namely, J. communis var. saxatilis. However, such a grouping of species in the Flora of Bulgaria has not been adopted. This study aimed to evaluate the degrees of similarity or difference in the structure of the leaves, galbuli, seeds, and pollen of J. communis, J. sibirica, and J. pygmaea using the methods of comparative anatomy by light microscope (LM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) observations and complex morphological measurements. The working hypothesis of this study was that the three species would show a different degree of similarity with each other, which would clarify their taxonomic rank. The morphological parameters revealed differences between the length/width ratio of galbuli and seed length of the three species, while leaf characteristics (length and width) showed a stronger resemblance between J. sibirica and J. pygmaea. Furthermore, a greater distinction between the leaves and galbili of J. communis and J. sibirica was found. The SEM analyses showed variations in the seed shape and spermoderm among the three species. The shape of J. communis seeds was oval and elongated, while J. pygmaea seeds were pear-shaped, and J. sibirica seeds were triangular-rhombic. The length and height of striations were diverse on seed spermoderm in the three species. The epicuticular waxes of leaves, located on the tips of the anticlinal walls of the elongated epidermal cells in J. pygmaea and J. communis, were oval, while they formed raised comb-like crystals in J. sibirica. The morphological, anatomical, and SEM analysis affirmed the accepted taxonomic status of J. communis and J. sibirica as independent species within the Bulgarian flora. Based on most of the analyzed parameters, J. pygmaea exhibits significant similarity with J. sibirica. Additionally, the similar habitats of these two species support the determination of J. pygmaea as a variety or form of J. sibirica rather than J. communis (J. sibirica forma pygmaea).

RESUMO

Robust materials in medical applications are sought after and researched, especially for 3D printing in bone tissue engineering. Poly[ε-caprolactone] (PCL) is a commonly used polymer for scaffolding and other medical uses. Its strength is a drawback compared to other polymers. Herein, PCL was mixed with hydroxyapatite (HAp). Composites were developed at various concentrations (0.0-8.0 wt. %, 2.0 step), aiming to enhance the strength of PCL with a biocompatible additive in bioplotting. Initially, pellets were derived from the shredding of filaments extruded after mixing PCL and HAp at predetermined quantities for each composite. Specimens were then manufactured by bioplotting 3D printing. The samples were tested for their thermal and rheological properties and were also mechanically, morphologically, and chemically examined. The mechanical properties included tensile and flexural investigations, while morphological and chemical examinations were carried out employing scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive spectroscopy, respectively. The structure of the manufactured specimens was analyzed using micro-computed tomography with regard to both their dimensional deviations and voids. PCL/HAp 6.0 wt. % was the composite that showed the most enhanced mechanical (14.6% strength improvement) and structural properties, proving the efficiency of HAp as a reinforcement filler in medical applications.

RESUMO

This article investigates the activation of surface groups of poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) fibers in woven fabric by hydrolysis and their functionalization with chitosan. Two types of hydrolysis were performed-alkaline and enzymatic. The alkaline hydrolysis was performed in a more sustainable process at reduced temperature and time (80 °C, 10 min) with the addition of the cationic surfactant hexadecyltrimethylammonium chloride as an accelerator. The enzymatic hydrolysis was performed using Amano Lipase A from Aspergillus niger (2 g/L enzyme, 60 °C, 60 min, pH 9). The surface of the PET fabric was functionalized with the homogenized gel of biopolymer chitosan using a pad-dry-cure process. The durability of functionalization was tested after the first and tenth washing cycle of a modified industrial washing process according to ISO 15797:2017, in which the temperature was lowered from 75 °C to 50 °C, and ε-(phthalimido) peroxyhexanoic acid (PAP) was used as an environmentally friendly agent for chemical bleaching and disinfection. The influence of the above treatments was analyzed by weight loss, tensile properties, horizontal wicking, the FTIR-ATR technique, zeta potential measurement and SEM micrographs. The results indicate better hydrophilicity and effectiveness of both types of hydrolysis, but enzymatic hydrolysis is more environmentally friendly and favorable. In addition, alkaline hydrolysis led to a 20% reduction in tensile properties, while the action of the enzyme resulted in a change of only 2%. The presence of chitosan on polyester fibers after repeated washing was confirmed on both fabrics by zeta potential and SEM micrographs. However, functionalization with chitosan on the enzymatically bioactivated surface showed better durability after 10 washing cycles than the alkaline-hydrolyzed one. The antibacterial activity of such a bio-innovative modified PET fabric is kept after the first and tenth washing cycles. In addition, applied processes can be easily introduced to any textile factory.

RESUMO

Topology optimization enables the design of advanced architected materials with tailored mechanical properties and optimal material distribution. This method can result in the production of parts with uniform mechanical properties, reducing anisotropy effects and addressing a critical challenge in metal additive manufacturing (AM). The current study aims to examine the micro-tensile response of Inconel 718 architected materials utilizing the Selective Laser Melting Technique. In this context, three novel architected materials, i.e., Octet, Schwarz Diamond (SD), and hybrid Schwarz Diamond and Face Centered Cubic (FCC), were tested in three different relative densities. The specimens were then subjected to uniaxial quasi-static tensile tests to determine their key mechanical properties, including elastic modulus, yield strength, and ultimate tensile strength (UTS), as well as the scaling laws describing the tensile response of each architected material. In situ Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) has been performed to observe the structure and grain morphology of the 3D printed specimens along with the phase transitions (elastic, plastic), the crack propagation, and the overall failure mechanisms. The results highlight the effect of the lattice type and the relative density on the mechanical properties of architected materials. Topologically optimized structures presented a 70-80% reduction in overall strength, while the SD and SD&FCC structures presented higher stretching dominated behavior, which was also verified by the n-value range (1-2) extracted from the identification of the scaling laws.

RESUMO

The industrial and medical sectors have a great interest in chitosan due to its unique properties, such as abundance, renewability, non-toxicity, antibacterial activity, biodegradability, and polyfunctionality. In this work, two modified chitosan Schiff bases (ChSB-1 and ChSB-2) were made using condensation methods, and their potential as corrosion inhibitor for carbon steel in 1 M HCl was investigated using chemical and electrochemical techniques. The ChSB-1 and ChSB-2 inhibitors exhibited remarkable inhibitory performance, as evidenced by the mass loss data, which showed 89.3 % and 91.5 % efficacy at 1 mM concentration, respectively. Because of the electron-donor substituent of methoxy (-OCH3), ChSB-2's active sites have more delocalized electrons than ChSB-1's. The PDP results showed that both ChSB-1 and ChSB-2 inhibitors have anti-corrosion characteristics because heteroatoms caused a protective layer to develop that functioned as mixed-typed inhibitors. The calculated adsorption-free energy ∆Gadso for ChSB-1 and ChSB-2, respectively, was found -36.1 and - 37.1 kJ mol-1. The ChSB-1 and ChSB-2 inhibitors adsorb on carbon steel in acidic conditions through physisorption and chemisorption interactions, and their adsorption is in line with the Langmuir adsorption model. Inhibited and uninhibited metallic surfaces were subjected to surface morphological assessments using contact angle (CA), the scanning electron microscopy and the energy dispersive X-ray (SEM/EDX) analysis. The DMol3 part of Materials Studio 7.0 software was used to perform the quantum chemical calculations based on DFT to visualize the structural features. Studies from quantum chemistry suggest the possibility of surface interaction between the unoccupied orbitals of the metal surface and the inhibitors ChSB-1, ChSB-2, ChSB-1H+, and ChSB-2H+. The results clearly show that the two inhibitors work well as environmentally friendly carbon steel corrosion inhibitors in acidic medium. This could be advantageous for industrial procedures such as pickling, cleaning, acidizing oil drilling in oil wells, and using citrus to de-sediment boilers.
