BACKGROUND: Stigma is a barrier to treatment and harm reduction seeking in people who use drugs. Most stigma reduction interventions offer psychotherapy or psychoeducation in group-based clinical settings, failing to reach people who are not in treatment. SMS text messaging is an effective and acceptable modality for delivering health information to people who use drugs and may be a suitable conduit for providing information and advice to understand and cope with stigma. OBJECTIVE: This paper presents the protocol for a study that aims to determine the feasibility, acceptability, and preliminary effectiveness of a 4-week automated SMS text message intervention to increase stigma resistance and reduce self-stigma in people who use drugs. METHODS: We designed a novel automated SMS text message intervention to address the four personal-level constructs of stigma resistance: (1) not believing stigma and catching and challenging stigmatizing thoughts, (2) empowering oneself through learning about substance use and one's recovery, (3) maintaining one's recovery and proving stigma wrong, and (4) developing a meaningful identity and purpose apart from one's substance use. Theory-based messages were developed and pilot-tested in qualitative elicitation interviews with 22 people who use drugs, resulting in a library of 56 messages. In a single-group, within-subjects, community-based pilot trial, we will enroll 30 participants in the Resisting Stigma and Revaluating Your Thoughts (RESTART) intervention. Participants will receive 2 daily SMS text messages for 4 weeks. Implementation feasibility will be assessed through recruitment, enrollment, retention, and message delivery statistics. User feasibility and acceptability will be assessed at follow-up using 23 survey items informed by the Theoretical Framework of Acceptability. Primary effectiveness outcomes are changes in self-stigma (Substance Abuse Self-Stigma Scale) and stigma resistance (Stigma Resistance Scale) from baseline to follow-up measured via a self-administered survey. Secondary outcomes are changes in hope (Adult Dispositional Hope Scale) and self-esteem (Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale). Feasibility and acceptability will be assessed with descriptive statistics; effectiveness outcomes will be assessed with paired 2-tailed t tests, and group differences will be explored using ANOVA. Overall, 12 participants will also be selected to complete acceptability interviews. RESULTS: This pilot study was funded by the National Institute on Drug Abuse in April 2023 and received regulatory approval in January 2024 by the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill Institutional Review Board. Recruitment and enrollment began in March 2024. Follow-up visits are expected to conclude by May 2024. Results will be disseminated in relevant peer-reviewed journals. CONCLUSIONS: To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study to address substance use stigma via a self-help SMS text messaging program. Results will add to the nascent literature on stigma reduction in people who use drugs. This protocol may interest researchers who are considering text messaging to address psychosocial needs in hard-to-reach populations. BACKGROUND: Population studies show that musculoskeletal conditions are a leading contributor to the total burden of healthy life lost, second only to cancer and with a similar burden to cardiovascular disease. Prioritizing the delivery of effective treatments is necessary, and with the ubiquity of consumer smart devices, the use of digital health interventions is increasing. Messaging is popular and easy to use and has been studied for a range of health-related uses, including health promotion, encouragement of behavior change, and monitoring of disease progression. It may have a useful role to play in the management and self-management of musculoskeletal conditions. OBJECTIVE: Previous reviews on the use of messaging for people with musculoskeletal conditions have focused on synthesizing evidence of effectiveness from randomized controlled trials. In this review, our objective was to map the musculoskeletal messaging literature more broadly to identify information that may inform the design of future messaging interventions and summarize the current evidence of efficacy, effectiveness, and economics. METHODS: Following a prepublished protocol developed using the Joanna Briggs Institute Manual for Evidence Synthesis, we conducted a comprehensive scoping review of the literature (2010-2022; sources: PubMed, CINAHL, Embase, and PsycINFO) related to SMS text messaging and app-based messaging for people with musculoskeletal conditions. We described our findings using tables, plots, and a narrative summary. RESULTS: We identified a total of 8328 papers for screening, of which 50 (0.6%) were included in this review (3/50, 6% previous reviews and 47/50, 94% papers describing 40 primary studies). Rheumatic diseases accounted for the largest proportion of the included primary studies (19/40, 48%), followed by studies on multiple musculoskeletal conditions or pain sites (10/40, 25%), back pain (9/40, 23%), neck pain (1/40, 3%), and "other" (1/40, 3%). Most studies (33/40, 83%) described interventions intended to promote positive behavior change, typically by encouraging increased physical activity and exercise. The studies evaluated a range of outcomes, including pain, function, quality of life, and medication adherence. Overall, the results either favored messaging interventions or had equivocal outcomes. While the theoretical underpinnings of the interventions were generally well described, only 4% (2/47) of the papers provided comprehensive descriptions of the messaging intervention design and development process. We found no relevant economic evaluations. CONCLUSIONS: Messaging has been used for the care and self-management of a range of musculoskeletal conditions with generally favorable outcomes reported. However, with few exceptions, design considerations are poorly described in the literature. Further work is needed to understand and disseminate information about messaging content and message delivery characteristics, such as timing and frequency specifically for people with musculoskeletal conditions. Similarly, further work is needed to understand the economic effects of messaging and practical considerations related to implementation and sustainability. The Microcystis blooms have caused serious damage to aquatic ecosystems. Microspheres containing allelochemicals with sustained-release properties have the potential to function as a cost-effective and environmentally friendly algaecide against M. aeruginosa. In the current investigation, we successfully optimized the synthesis of allelochemicals sustained-release microspheres regulated by carbon material (CM-AC@SM), which demonstrated a high embedding rate (90.17 %) and loading rate (0.65 %), with an accumulative release rate of 53.27 % on day 30. To investigate the sustained-release mechanism of CM-AC@SM, the sustained-release process of allelochemicals was determined using the Folin-Phenol method and the immersion behavior of the CM-AC@SM was characterized through SEM and XPS. Results showed that allelochemicals were released in the delayed-dissolution mode. In addition, to elucidate the synergistic mechanism of CM-AC@SM towards the inhibition of M. aeruginosa, this study comprehensively assessed the effects of allelochemicals, carbon material and CM-AC@SM on the morphology, antioxidant system activity and photosynthetic activity of M. aeruginosa. The findings indicated that allelochemicals and carbon material induced intracellular protein and nucleic acid leakage by increasing cell membrane permeability, disrupted the extracellular and intracellular morphology of algae, triggered peroxidative damage and restrained antioxidant system activity by stimulating the generation of reactive oxygen species. Simultaneously, the activity of photosystem II was inhibited by allelochemicals and carbon material, substantiated by the reduction in Fv/Fo and Fv/Fm ratios. Hence, CM-AC@SM shows promise in inhibiting M. aeruginosa, offering an efficient approach for the future large-scale control of harmful algal blooms (HABs).

Smith-Magenis Syndrome (SMS) is a rare genetic disorder, characterized by intellectual disability (ID), behavioral impairments, and sleep disturbances, as well as multiple organ anomalies in some affected individuals. The syndrome is caused by a deletion in the chromosome band around 17p11.2, including the Retinoic Acid Induced 1 (RAI1) gene, a multifaceted transcriptional regulator that modulates the expression of genes involved in cellular proliferation and neurodevelopment. This gene has a positive role in regulating BDNF and, importantly, affects several cell mechanisms and pathways such as the nigro-striatal pathway, which is crucial for motor function. Parkinson's disease (PD) is one of the most common neurodegenerative diseases in older populations. It is characterized by various physical symptoms including tremors, loss of balance, bradykinesia, and a stooping posture. We present a case study of a patient diagnosed with both SMS and early-onset PD (at the age of 49). The association between both conditions is as yet ambiguous. Genome-wide association studies (GWAS) implicate an association between the RAI1 gene and PD. Similarly, the co-existence of both SMS and PD in the patient suggests a possible association between RAI1 copy number variations (CNVs) and PD, further indicating that RAI1 has strong implications for PD pathogenesis. Our results suggest that RAI1 CNVs and the pathophysiology of PD may be related, underscoring the need for further research in this field. Therefore, caregivers of SMS patients should pay careful attention to the possibility of their patients developing EOPD and should consider starting treatment for PD as soon as the first symptoms appear.

The BOOST (Booster promotion for older outpatients using SMS text reminders) program at Taipei Veterans General Hospital assessed the effectiveness of text message reminders in enhancing COVID-19 booster vaccination rates among the elderly, guided by the Health Belief Model (HBM). Targeting patients aged 65 and above, eligible yet unvaccinated for a COVID-19 booster, this cohort study sent personalized reminders a week prior to their scheduled appointments between April 18, 2022, and May 12, 2022, acting as cues to action to enhance vaccination uptake by overcoming perceived barriers and raising awareness of benefits. Over 5 weeks, the study observed a 38% increase in vaccination rate among 3,500 eligible patients, markedly surpassing the concurrent national rate increase of 4% for the same demographic. The majority of vaccinations occurred within two weeks after the reminder, illustrating the effectiveness of the strategy. Cox regression analysis identified age and time since last vaccination as significant predictors of responsiveness, with those aged 65-74 and 75-84 showing higher uptake, particularly when reminders were sent within 4 months after the last dose. A single reminder proved to be effective. The findings of this study demonstrate the potential of SMS reminders to promote COVID-19 vaccination among the elderly through the strategic use of HBM principles, suggesting a feasible and effective approach to public health communication.

BACKGROUND: The aim of this review was to investigate the impact of short message service (SMS)-based interventions on childhood and adolescent vaccine coverage and timeliness. METHODS: A pre-defined search strategy was used to identify all relevant publications up until July 2022 from electronic databases. Reports of randomised trials written in English and involving children and adolescents less than 18 years old were included. The review was conducted in accordance with PRISMA guidelines. RESULTS: Thirty randomised trials were identified. Most trials were conducted in high-income countries. There was marked heterogeneity between studies. SMS-based interventions were associated with small to moderate improvements in vaccine coverage and timeliness compared to no SMS reminder. Reminders with embedded education or which were combined with monetary incentives performed better than simple reminders in some settings. CONCLUSION: Some SMS-based interventions appear effective for improving child vaccine coverage and timeliness in some settings. Future studies should focus on identifying which features of SMS-based strategies, including the message content and timing, are determinants of effectiveness.

The objective of this study was to test whether adding a text message campaign about the importance of eating eggs and other nutrition-related behaviours to an on-going package of large-scale, diverse social and behaviour change interventions would improve four types of nutrition-related knowledge and behaviour outcomes: child diets (egg consumption as the primary outcome), maternal diets, maternal nutrition knowledge, and maternal participation in additional interventions. The cluster-randomized controlled trial involved a repeat cross-sectional design, recruiting families with children 12-23 months of age at baseline and endline in one plains district of Nepal. Throughout the 1000-day period, 51 text messages were sent to each household at specific time points to reinforce ideal diets and other nutrition-related practices and promote engagement with community health workers and other intervention platforms. The primary outcome was egg consumption and dietary diversity among young children. We found no population-level effect. Some evidence supports that for those who received and opened the SMS intervention, it improved child egg consumption (odds ratio [OR]: 1.41, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.03-1.93), child minimum dietary diversity (OR: 1.36, 95% CI: 1.07-1.73), child dietary diversity scores (ß: 0.15, 95% CI: 0.01-0.24), as well as maternal IYCF knowledge (ß: 0.21, 95% CI: 0.08-0.35), participation in health mothers' group meetings (OR: 3.03, 95% CI: 1.91-4.84) and Bhanchhin Aama listenership (OR: 1.36, 95% CI: 1.07-1.73). This study highlights the importance of more research to understand the effectiveness of emerging digital interventions for behaviour change among specific populations, to facilitate nuanced targeting to those who can best benefit from these investments. Safe drinking water is essential to a healthy lifestyle and has been recognised as a human right by numerous countries. However, the realisation of this right remains largely aspirational, particularly in impoverished nations that lack adequate resources for water quality testing. Kenya, a Sub-Saharan country, bears the brunt of this challenge. Pesticide imports in Kenya increased by 144% from 2015 to 2018, with sales data indicating that 76% of these pesticides are classified as highly hazardous. This trend continues to rise. Over 70% of Kenya's population resides in rural areas, with 75% of the rural population engaged in agriculture and using pesticides. Agriculture is the country's main economic activity, contributing over 30% of its gross domestic product (GDP). The situation is further exacerbated by the lack of monitoring for pesticide residues in surface water and groundwater, coupled with the absence of piped water infrastructure in rural areas. Consequently, contamination levels are high, as agricultural runoff is a major contaminant of surface water and groundwater. The increased use of pesticides to enhance agricultural productivity exacerbates environmental degradation and harms water ecosystems, adversely affecting public health. This study proposes the development of a wireless sensor system that utilizes radio-frequency identification (RFID), Long-range (LoRa) protocol and a global system for mobile communications (GSM) for monitoring pesticide prevalence in groundwater sources. From the system design, individuals with limited literacy skills, advanced age, or non-expert users can utilize it with ease. The reliability of the LoRa protocol in transmitting data packets is thoroughly investigated to ensure effective communication. The system features a user-friendly interface for straightforward data input and facilitates broader access to information by employing various remote wireless sensing methods.

BACKGROUND: Ethiopia has high rates of maternal and neonatal mortality. In 2019 and 2020, the maternal and newborn mortality rates were estimated at 412 per 1,000,000 births and 30 per 10,000 births, respectively. While mobile health interventions to improve maternal and neonatal health management have shown promising results, there are still insufficient scientific studies to assess the effectiveness of mobile phone messaging-based message framing for maternal and newborn health. OBJECTIVE: This research aims to examine the effectiveness of mobile phone messaging-based message framing for improving the use of maternal and newborn health services in the Jimma Zone, Ethiopia. METHODS: A 3-arm cluster-randomized trial design was used to evaluate the effects of mobile phone-based intervention on maternal and newborn health service usage. The trial arms were (1) gain-framed messages (2) loss-framed messages, and (3) usual care. A total of 21 health posts were randomized, and 588 pregnant women who had a gestational age of 16-20 weeks, irrespective of their antenatal care status, were randomly assigned to the trial arms. The intervention consisted of a series of messages dispatched from the date of enrolment until 6-8 months. The control group received existing care without messages. The primary outcomes were maternal health service usage and newborn care practice, while knowledge, attitude, self-efficacy, iron supplementation, and neonatal and maternal morbidity were secondary outcomes. The outcomes will be analyzed using a generalized linear mixed model and the findings will be reported according to the CONSORT-EHEALTH (Consolidated Standards of Reporting Trials of Electronic and Mobile HEalth Applications and onLine TeleHealth) statement for randomized controlled trials. RESULTS: Recruitment of participants was conducted and the baseline survey was administered in March 2023. The intervention was rolled out from May 2023 till December 2023. The end-line assessment was conducted in February 2024. CONCLUSIONS: This trial was carried out to understand how mobile phone-based messaging can improve maternal and newborn health service usage. It provides evidence for policy guidelines around mobile health strategies to improve maternal and newborn health. BACKGROUND: Mobile phone-based SMS text message reminders have the potential to improve colorectal cancer screening participation rates. OBJECTIVE: This study assessed the effectiveness and acceptability of adding targeted SMS text message reminders to the standard procedure for those who picked up but did not return their screening kit at the pharmacy within 14 days in a colorectal cancer screening program in Catalonia, Spain. METHODS: We performed a randomized control trial among individuals who picked up a fecal immunochemical test (FIT) kit for colorectal cancer screening at the pharmacy but did not return it within 14 days. The intervention group (n=4563) received an SMS text message reminder on the 14th day of kit pick up and the control group (n=4806) received no reminder. A 30-day reminder letter was sent to both groups if necessary. The main primary outcome was the FIT completion rate within 30, 60, and 126 days from FIT kit pick up (intention-to-treat analysis). A telephone survey assessed the acceptability and appropriateness of the intervention. The cost-effectiveness of adding an SMS text message reminder to FIT completion was also performed. RESULTS: The intervention group had higher FIT completion rates than the control group at 30 (64.2% vs 53.7%; P<.001), 60 (78.6% vs 72.0%; P<.001), and 126 (82.6% vs 77.7%; P<.001) days. Participation rates were higher in the intervention arm independent of sex, age, socioeconomic level, and previous screening behavior. A total of 339 (89.2%) interviewees considered it important and useful to receive SMS text message reminders for FIT completion and 355 (93.4%) preferred SMS text messages to postal letters. We observed a reduction of US $2.4 per participant gained in the intervention arm for invitation costs compared to the control arm. CONCLUSIONS: Adding an SMS text message reminder to the standard procedure significantly increased FIT kit return rates and was a cost-effective strategy. SMS text messages also proved to be an acceptable and appropriate communication channel for cancer screening programs. BACKGROUND: SMS texting systems have been considered a potential solution to reduce missed appointments in primary care. Existing research in this area focuses on qualitative studies investigating the attitudes of SMS text users and receivers. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to examine appointment data from an independent general practitioner (GP) surgery in Wrexham, United Kingdom, with approximately 15,000 patients, to determine the impact of text messaging systems on reducing missed appointments. The objective of this study was to investigate whether the use of text messages can effectively reduce missed appointments. METHODS: To collect data for the study, SQL reports were run on EMIS Web, the United Kingdom's most widely used clinical system. The data spanned 10 years, from September 1, 2010, to March 31, 2020. Data accuracy was verified by cross-referencing with appointment diary records. Mann-Whitney and Kruskal-Wallis tests, chosen for their suitability in comparing groups in nonparametric settings, were conducted in Microsoft Excel due to its accessibility. RESULTS: Statistical analyses were conducted to compare data before and after implementation of the text messaging system. The results revealed a significant 42.8% reduction in missed appointments (before: 5848; after: 3343; P<.001). Further analysis of demographic characteristics revealed interesting trends, with no significant difference in missed appointments between genders, and variations observed across different age groups. The median number of missed appointments was not significantly different between genders (women: 1.55, IQR 1.11-2.16; men: 1.61, IQR 1.08-2.12; P=.73). Despite the prevalence of mobile phone use among young adults aged 20-25 years, the highest rates of missed appointments (848/7256, 11.7%) were noted in this group, whereas the lowest rates were noted in the 75-80 years age group (377/7256; 5.2%; P<.001). Analysis by age and gender indicated inconsistencies: women aged 20-25 years (571/4216) and men aged 35-40 years (306/3040) had the highest rates of missed appointments, whereas women aged 70-75 years (177/4216) and men aged 75-80 years (129/3040) had the lowest rates (P<.001 for both). CONCLUSIONS: This study demonstrates that SMS text messaging in primary care can significantly reduce missed appointments. Implementing technology such as SMS text messaging systems enables patients to cancel appointments on time, leading to improved efficiency in primary care settings.

Rationale & Objective: The majority of patients with kidney failure receiving dialysis own mobile devices, but the use of mobile health (mHealth) technologies to conduct surveys in this population is limited. We assessed the reach and acceptability of a short message service (SMS) text message-based survey that assessed coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) vaccine hesitancy among patients receiving dialysis. Study Design & Exposure: A cross-sectional SMS-based survey conducted in January 2021. Setting & Participants: Patients receiving in-center hemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis, or home hemodialysis in a nonprofit dialysis organization in New York City. Outcomes: (1) Reach of the SMS survey, (2) Acceptability using the 4-item Acceptability of Intervention Measure, and (3) Patient preferences for modes of survey administration. Analytical Approach: We used Fisher exact tests and multivariable logistic regression to assess sociodemographic and clinical predictors of SMS survey response. Qualitative methods were used to analyze open-ended responses capturing patient preferences. Results: Among 1,008 patients, 310 responded to the SMS survey (response rate 31%). In multivariable adjusted analyses, participants who were age 80 years and above (aOR, 0.49; 95% CI, 0.25-0.96) were less likely to respond to the SMS survey compared with those aged 18 to 44 years. Non-Hispanic Black (aOR, 0.58; 95% CI, 0.39-0.86), Hispanic (aOR, 0.31; 95% CI, 0.19-0.51), and Asian or Pacific Islander (aOR, 0.46; 95% CI, 0.28-0.74) individuals were less likely to respond compared with non-Hispanic White participants. Participants residing in census tracts with higher Social Vulnerability Index, indicating greater neighborhood-level social vulnerability, were less likely to respond to the SMS survey (fifth vs first quintile aOR, 0.61; 95% CI, 0.37-0.99). Over 80% of a sample of survey respondents and nonrespondents completely agreed or agreed with the Acceptability of Intervention Measure. Qualitative analysis identified 4 drivers of patient preferences for survey administration: (1) convenience (subtopics: efficiency, multitasking, comfort, and synchronicity); (2) privacy; (3) interpersonal interaction; and (4) accessibility (subtopics: vision, language, and fatigue). Limitations: Generalizability, length of survey. Conclusions: An SMS text message-based survey had moderate reach among patients receiving dialysis and was highly acceptable, but response rates were lower in older (age ≥ 80), non-White individuals and those with greater neighborhood-level social vulnerability. Future research should examine barriers and facilitators to mHealth among patients receiving dialysis to ensure equitable implementation of mHealth-based technologies.

FeS clusters are prosthetic groups present in all organisms. Proteins with FeS centers are involved in most cellular processes. ISC and SUF are machineries necessary for the formation and insertion of FeS in proteins. Recently, a phylogenetic analysis on more than 10,000 genomes of prokaryotes have uncovered two new systems, MIS and SMS, which were proposed to be ancestral to ISC and SUF. SMS is composed of SmsBC, two homologs of SufBC(D), the scaffolding complex of SUF. In this review, we will specifically focus on the current knowledge of the SUF system and on the new perspectives given by the recent discovery of its ancestor, the SMS system.

BACKGROUND: Inadequate pain relief with moderate to severe pain remains a challenge after cesarean section and may significantly impair postoperative recovery. However, detailed assessment on the timing of severe pain, opioid consumption, influence on activities such as mobilization, breastfeeding, and caring for the infant are difficult to conduct, especially after discharge. Short message services (SMS)-based questionnaires may offer a low-cost way of providing such data but with the risk of insufficient response rates. We assessed the feasibility of collecting detailed, prospective data on postoperative pain and recovery during the initial hours and days following cesarean section using SMS-based questionnaires. METHODS: Prospective Danish single-center cohort study involving elective cesarean sections under spinal anesthesia with fentanyl and bupivacaine. The postoperative pain regimen consisted of paracetamol, NSAID and oral morphine by request. Patients received an SMS-based questionnaire at 6, 12, 18, 24, and 48 h postoperatively, as well as on days 7 and 30. PRIMARY OUTCOME: Response rate and time from receiving the SMS to completion of the questionnaires. SECONDARY OUTCOMES: Opioid consumption and Patient Reported Outcomes Measures on pain and recovery. RESULTS: From December 2022 to June 2023; 100 patients were included. The response rate was 78% at 6 h postoperatively, decreasing to 63% at 24 h. The median response time from receiving to answering the SMS-based questionnaire at 6 h after cesarean section was 23 min (IQR 2-72), decreasing to 20 min (IQR 2-78) after 24 h. Severe pain, corresponding to a Numeric Rating Scale (NRS) score >6, was reported by 57% (95% CI 65-84) at 6 h, decreasing to 28% (95% CI 34-58) at 24 h. Median opioid consumption within the first 24 h was 30 mg (IQR 20-50). CONCLUSION: SMS-based questionnaires on Patient Reported Outcome Measures are a feasible and cost-effective way of prospectively collecting frequent data with acceptable response rates, even shortly after cesarean section. Secondarily 66% of patients reported severe pain during the first 24 h following cesarean section, with the highest pain scores within the initial 12 h. Future studies should focus on optimizing pain-management within this timeframe.

Protein kinase C delta (PKCδ) has emerged as a key protective molecule against systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE or lupus), an autoimmune disease characterized by anti-double stranded (ds) DNA IgGs. Although PKCδ-deficient mice and lupus patients with mutated PRKCD genes clearly demonstrate the requirement for PKCδ in preventing lupus autoimmunity, this critical tolerance mechanism remains poorly understood. We recently reported that PKCδ acts as a key regulator of B cell tolerance by selectively deleting anti-dsDNA B cells in the germinal center (GC). PKCδ's tolerance function is activated by sphingomyelin synthase 2 (SMS2), a lipid enzyme whose expression is generally reduced in B cells from lupus patients. Moreover, pharmacologic strengthening of the SMS2/PKCδ tolerance pathway alleviated lupus pathogenesis in mice. Here, we review relevant publications in order to provide mechanistic insights into PKCδ's tolerance activity and discuss the potential significance of therapeutically targeting PKCδ's tolerance activity in the GC for selectively inhibiting lupus autoimmunity.

Skin cancer is one of the most common types of cancer worldwide, and it can affect people of all ages, races, and genders. Mohs micrographic surgery (MMS), a specialized type of skin cancer surgery, boasts the highest cure rates for various types of skin malignancies. Slow Mohs surgery (SMS) is a methodical and meticulous approach to MMS that involves careful and deliberate examination of tissue samples to ensure the complete removal of skin cancer while preserving as much healthy tissue as possible. Both SMS and MMS have been indicated to be effective treatment options for skin cancer, depending on the type and stage of cancer. This case-control study analysis compares the efficacy of SMS for melanoma with that of MMS for squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) and basal cell carcinoma (BCC). We analyzed data from the past two decades to assess recurrence rates and treatment-related complications. Our findings suggest that SMS for melanoma achieves comparable outcomes to MMS in SCC and BCC. Both approaches demonstrated similar cure rates and complication profiles. However, further prospective studies are necessary to solidify these findings and refine the specific role of SMS in melanoma therapy.

Meals comprising a staple grain, a main, and side dishes (SMS meals) promote good dietary intake, yet limited studies have examined their multifactorial relationship with dietary intake. We investigated how demographic characteristics, lifestyle, and dietary habits affect the relationship between SMS meal frequency and nutrient intake adequacy. This cross-sectional study analyzed survey data from 331 Japanese adults (208 men and 123 women) aged 30-69 years in February 2019. SMS meal frequency was evaluated according to respondents' answers to how many days a week they consumed ≥2 daily SMS meals. Dietary intake was evaluated using the brief self-administered diet history questionnaire. Differences in nutrient intake adequacy among groups according to SMS meal frequency were determined using multiple logistic regression. Less frequent SMS meals correlated with a lower intake of protein, water-soluble vitamins, and certain minerals, with more individuals falling below the estimated average requirement for nutrient intake. However, no relationship was found between SMS meal frequency and nutrient intake concerning tentative dietary goals for preventing lifestyle-related diseases. Our findings indicate that adopting SMS meals could achieve adequate intake of some nutrients and enhance overall diet quality among Japanese adults.

PURPOSE: To develop multiphoton excitation techniques for simultaneous multislice (SMS) imaging and evaluate their performance and specific absorption rate (SAR) benefit. To improve multiphoton SMS reconstruction quality with a novel CAIPIRINHA (controlled aliasing in parallel imaging results in higher acceleration) design. THEORY AND METHODS: When a conventional single-slice RF field is applied together with an oscillating gradient field, the two can combine to generate multiphoton excitation at multiple discrete spatial locations. Because the conventional RF is reused at multiple spatial locations, multiphoton excitation offers reduced SAR for SMS applications. CAIPIRINHA shifts are often used to improve parallel-imaging acceleration. Interestingly, CAIPIRINHA-type shifts can be obtained for multiphoton SMS by updating the oscillating gradient phase at every phase encode. In this work, both a gradient-echo and a spin-echo sequence with multiphoton CAIPIRINHA-SMS excitation pulses are implemented for in vivo human imaging at 3 T. RESULTS: For three slices, multiphoton SMS provides a 51% reduction in SAR compared with conventional superposition SMS, whereas for five slices, SAR is reduced by 66%. Multiphoton SMS outperforms PINS (power independent of number of slices) and MultiPINS in terms of SAR reduction especially when the pulse duration is short, slices are thin, and/or the slice spacing is large. A custom CAIPIRINHA phase-encoding design for multiphoton SMS significantly improves reconstruction quality. CONCLUSION: Multiphoton SMS excitation can be obtained by combining conventional single-slice RF pulses with an oscillating gradient and offers significant SAR benefits compared with conventional superposition SMS. A novel CAIPIRINHA design allows higher multiband factors for multiphoton SMS imaging.
