BACKGROUND: In an era marked by rapid technological advancements, changing demographics, and evolving healthcare needs, the landscape of health services has been undergoing a profound transformation. Innovation has emerged as a central force driving change in the healthcare sector, as stakeholders across the globe strive to enhance the quality, accessibility, and efficiency of healthcare services. OBJECTIVE: Within this dynamic context, this systematic literature review explored the barriers and driving forces behind successful health service innovation. METHODS: A comprehensive systematic literature review was conducted using the Griffith University Library search engine and databases that included PubMed, ProQuest, Web of Science, Scopus, and CINHAL. To achieve the study goal, the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines and the associated PRISMA checklist guided the review and reporting method. RESULTS: Findings from this review identified a need for a universal definition of health innovation that encompasses the unique complexities and challenges within this context. In our comprehensive analysis of healthcare innovation, we have uncovered pivotal findings that underscore the indispensable nature of a well-structured framework. CONCLUSIONS: To succeed in fostering innovation within the health and social care sectors, it is imperative to establish an overarching organisational culture that meticulously addresses the following key components: team challenges; communication and collaboration; governance goals and authentic leadership, environmental engagement; and innovation endurance. Through systematic analysis of existing literature, this review offers a definition of health innovation, covering its conceptual foundations, determinants, and barriers, and provides a framework for creating an innovative culture.

RESUMO

Phytopathogenic fungi are responsible for diseases in commercially important crops and cause major supply problems in the global food chain. Plants were able to protect themselves from disease before humans played an active role in protecting plants. They are known to synthesize a variety of secondary metabolites (SMs), such as terpenes, alkaloids, and phenolic compounds, which can be extracted using conventional and unconventional techniques to formulate biofungicides; plant extracts have antifungal activity and various mechanisms of action against these organisms. In addition, they are considered non-phytotoxic and potentially effective in disease control. They are a sustainable and economically viable alternative for use in agriculture, which is why biofungicides are increasingly recognized as an attractive option to solve the problems caused by synthetic fungicides. Currently, organic farming continues to grow, highlighting the importance of developing environmentally friendly alternatives for crop production. This review provides a compilation of the literature on biosynthesis, mechanisms of action of secondary metabolites against phytopathogens, extraction techniques and formulation of biofungicides, biological activity of plant extracts on phytopathogenic fungi, regulation, advantages, disadvantages and an overview of the current use of biofungicides in agriculture.

The production of coconut tree seedlings is an important step in the production process, as it substantially affects the productive performance of the adult plant, and the way of obtaining seedlings directly reflects the added costs. To minimize costs, the introduction of biostimulants can be considered a viable and sustainable technology. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of applying Bacillus cereus in promoting growth and reducing the costs of producing Brazilgreen dwarf coconut seedlings. The study has two stages, the first was an experiment carried out in a commercial nursery in the state of Pará-Brazil. The design was completely randomized, with two treatments: control with water (100% mineral fertilization) and B. cereus inoculation (50% mineral fertilization), with 10 replicates each. Biometric parameters and the quality of seedlings were evaluated. In the second stage, the production of stimulated seedlings was compared to that of commercial seedlings, and the effective operating cost (COE) and the total operating cost (TOC) were determined. Biostimulation with B. cereus promotes the growth of coconut tree seedlings, increases seedling quality, and reduces nursery time. In addition, the cost of production is reduced by 10%. Thus, microbial technology is a positive strategy for the production of Brazilian green dwarf coconut seedlings. Using B. cereus can guarantee obtaining seedlings with high performance and at a lower cost. These results may favor obtaining adult plants with high productivity. Waste-to-energy systems can provide a functional demonstration of the economic and environmental benefits of circularity, innovation, and reimagining existing systems. This study offers a robust quantification of the greenhouse gas (GHG) emission reduction potential of the adoption of anaerobic digestion (AD) technology on applicable large-scale dairy farms in the contiguous United States. GHG reduction estimates were developed through a robust life cycle modeling framework paired with sensitivity and uncertainty analyses. Twenty dairy configurations were modeled to capture important differences in housing and manure management practices, applicable AD technologies, regional climates, storage cleanout schedules, and methods of land application. Monte Carlo results for the 90% confidence interval illustrate the potential for AD adoption to reduce GHG emissions from the large-scale dairy industry by 2.45-3.52 MMT of CO2-eq per year considering biogas use only in renewable natural gas programs and as much as 4.53-6.46 MMT of CO2-eq per year with combined heat and power as an additional biogas use case. At the farm level, AD technology may reduce GHG emissions from manure management systems by 58.1-79.8% depending on the region. Discussion focuses on regional differences in GHG emissions from manure management strategies and the challenges and opportunities surrounding AD adoption.

INTRODUCTION: Previous research has delved into the attitudes and behaviors of diverse professions regarding environmental sustainability. However, there needs to be more research specifically targeting radiographers. This study aims to survey radiographers' perceptions, practices, and barriers to change concerning environmental sustainability in radiology. METHODS: Institutional ethical approval was obtained (IRB-COHS-FAC-110-2024) and data collection was conducted using Google Forms (Google Inc., Mountain View, CA). The survey targeted 104 practicing radiographers across several countries. Questions were structured around five domains to gather insights into demographics, training in global warming and climate change, perceptions of sustainability and climate change, sustainability barriers, and current radiology practices on sustainability. Data analysis utilized descriptive and d inferential statistics. RESULTS: One hundred and four radiographers completed the study. Females had a significantly higher attendance rate in environmental protection campaigns (P = 0.01). The majority of respondents (68%) believe in climate change's knowledge and impact on the natural world. Our survey findings demonstrate that 74% of respondents believe there's a need to improve sustainability practices. The most commonly used strategies to decrease energy consumption and emissions were low-energy lighting (60%), real-time power monitoring tools (41%), and energy-efficient heating systems (32%). A significant concern regarding sustainability emerges among respondents: time (50%) and lack of leadership (48%) are prevalent concerns among the identified barriers. CONCLUSION: Participants are recognising the importance of environmental sustainability in radiology, but lack of leadership, support, authority, and facility limitations hinder their adoption. IMPACT ON PRACTICE: Radiology must prioritize environmental sustainability by providing resources and training for radiographers and collaborating with healthcare professionals, policymakers, and environmental experts to develop comprehensive strategies for a sustainable healthcare system.

One method to improve the properties of covalent adaptable networks (CANs) is to reinforce them with a fraction of permanent cross-links without sacrificing their (re)processability. Here, a simple method to synthesize poly(n-hexyl methacrylate) (PHMA) and poly(n-lauryl methacrylate) (PLMA) networks containing static dialkyl disulfide cross-links (utilizing bis(2-methacryloyl)oxyethyl disulfide, or DSDMA, as a permanent cross-linker) and dynamic dialkylamino sulfur-sulfur cross-links (utilizing BiTEMPS methacrylate as a dissociative dynamic covalent cross-linker) is presented. The robustness and (re)processability of the CANs are demonstrated, including the full recovery of cross-link density after recycling. The authors also investigate the effect of static cross-link content on the stress relaxation responses of the CANs with and without percolated, static cross-links. As PHMA and PLMA have very different activation energies of their respective cooperative segmental mobilities, it is shown that the dissociative CANs without percolated, static cross-links have activation energies of stress relaxation that are dominated by the dissociation of BiTEMPS methacrylate cross-links rather than by the cooperative relaxations of backbone segments, i.e., the alpha relaxation. In CANs with percolated, static cross-links, the segmental relaxation of side chains, i.e., the beta relaxation, is critical in allowing for large-scale stress relaxation and governs their activation energies of stress relaxation.

PURPOSE: This study, by applying the feedback process of the organizational learning model, examined the relationships among group learning, individuals' and groups' internalization of institutionalized evidence-based practice (I-EBP), and nurses' sustainment of I-EBP. DESIGN/METHODOLOGY/APPROACH: Twelve hospitals were included in this cross-sectional study, with 1,741 nurses from 59 wards. Anonymous questionnaires were administered from October to December 2021. Participants self-reported their wards' group learning, internalization of I-EBP, sustainment of I-EBP, EBP beliefs, intra-hospital transfers, and nursing research experiences. The number of nurses and I-EBP introduction length and type of I-EBP were assessed. Internalization of I-EBP of nurses and groups was considered the mediating variable, while group learning and nurses' sustainment of I-EBP were the independent and dependent variables, respectively. Significant variables in bivariate analyses were used as control variables. Multi-level Mediation Analysis and a significance test of indirect effect using the bootstrap method were conducted. FINDINGS: Responses from 360 nurses in 48 wards from 12 hospitals were analyzed. Groups' internalization of I-EBP significantly mediated the relationship between group learning and nurses' sustainment of I-EBP. In contrast, no significant mediating effect of nurses' internalization of I-EBP was observed. ORIGINALITY/VALUE: In the feedback process of organizational learning, group learning and its subsequent effects on individuals and groups have not been previously examined. Regardless of the nurses' degree of internalization of I-EBP, those who belong to the ward with a high degree of internalization of I-EBP are more likely to sustain it. Conducting group learning may prevent superficial practice, resulting in its sustainability.

PURPOSE: This paper explores the use of Dynamic Business Modeling for Sustainability (DBMfS) in healthcare management settings as a holistic approach to integrating economic, social, and environmental dimensions into the business formula of these complex organizations. DESIGN/METHODOLOGY/APPROACH: After framing sustainable value in healthcare in terms of organizational complexity, wicked problems, and emerging managerial challenges, the paper proposes and illustrates the DBMfS approach that adopts a systemic view of sustainable value in healthcare. According to a qualitative perspective, a single-case study of a maternity-related healthcare treatment is also described to explore the implications and limitations of using this approach to sustainable business modeling in healthcare organizations. FINDINGS: Findings show that, by embracing sustainability through DBMfS, healthcare organizations can improve operational efficiency, reduce waste (like energy, water, and medical supplies), and enhance cost-effectiveness, thus contributing significantly to societal well-being. ORIGINALITY/VALUE: In recent years, the healthcare sector has faced numerous challenges and wicked problems, including escalating costs, resource constraints, and growing environmental concerns. As a result, the concept of sustainability has gained significant attention, thus calling scholars and practitioners to develop methods and tools able to integrate it into strategic management systems of healthcare organizations. By proposing the adoption of DBMfS in the healthcare sector, this paper contributes to feeding up the current debate.

Inexpensive chemiresistive sensors are often insufficiently selective as they are sensitive to multiple components of the gas mixture at the same time. One solution would be to insert a device in front of the sensor that separates the measured gas mixture and possibly isolates the unwanted components. This study focused on the fabrication and characterization of a compact unit, which was fabricated by 3D printing, for the separation and detection of simple gas mixtures. The capillary, the basic part of the compact unit, was 4.689 m long and had a diameter of 0.7 mm. The compact unit also contained a mixing chamber on the inlet side and a measuring chamber with a MiCS-6814 sensor on the outlet side. Mixtures of ethanol and water at different concentrations were chosen for characterization. The measured calibration curve was found to have a reliability of R2 = 0.9941. The study further addressed the elements of environmental friendliness of the materials used and their sustainability.

This study assesses the impact of implementing a floating solar photovoltaic system (FSPV) on the Turgutlu irrigation pond in Sakarya, Turkey, aiming to reduce energy expenses in agricultural irrigation and promote sustainability in farming. Two scenarios are developed to evaluate the FSPV, focusing on CO2 emissions mitigation, energy generation potential, evaporation reduction, conservation of terrestrial land, effects on agricultural production, decreased reliance on fossil fuels, and associated costs and return on investment (ROI). In the first scenario, the FSPV is expected to generate 7168 MWh of energy, preventing the emission of 4520 tons of carbon, and reducing annual evaporation by 6686 m3. In the second scenario, the FSPV's energy output is estimated at 99 MWh, preventing 64.2 tons of carbon emissions, and reducing annual evaporation by 94.4 m3. These findings provide valuable insights at the regional level, presenting a compelling case study for potential replication in other irrigated agricultural regions.

Sustainability has become indispensable - and so has the role chemistry plays in reaching the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The Swiss Academy of Sciences (SCNAT) and its Platform Chemistry (PFC) can be a partner of the Swiss chemistry community in reaching (some of) these goals through their umbrella network. Next to all existing initiatives, SCNAT PFC recommends the chemistry community to support increasing scientific literacy such that for example students who want to contribute to a better environment in their future career become aware of the impact that chemistry has on sustainability and every day lives. The SDGs are a formalism that can be used to help communicating the impact of chemistry. It is important to keep on advertising also fundamental research, as this is the essential basis for any sustainable development.

BACKGROUND: The healthcare system plays a pivotal role in environmental sustainability, and the operating room (OR) significantly contributes to its overall carbon footprint. In response to this critical challenge, leading medical societies, government bodies, regulatory agencies, and industry stakeholders are taking measures to address healthcare sustainability and its impact on climate change. Healthcare now represents almost 20% of the US national economy and 8.5% of US carbon emissions. Internationally, healthcare represents 5% of global carbon emissions. US Healthcare is an outlier in both per capita cost, and per capita greenhouse gas emission, with almost twice per capita emissions compared to every other country in the world. METHODS: The Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons (SAGES) and the European Association for Endoscopic Surgery (EAES) established the Sustainability in Surgical Practice joint task force in 2023. This collaborative effort aims to actively promote education, mitigation, and innovation, steering surgical practices toward a more sustainable future. RESULTS: Several key initiatives have included a survey of members' knowledge and awareness, a scoping review of terminology, metrics, and initiatives, and deep engagement of key stakeholders. DISCUSSION: This position paper serves as a Call to Action, proposing a series of actions to catalyze and accelerate the surgical sustainability leadership needed to respond effectively to climate change, and to lead the societal transformation towards health that our times demand.

This study aims to conduct a bibliometric analysis to determine trends and emerging research directions of sustainable aviation between 2001 and 2023. 726 studies indexed in the Web of Science were examined through VOSviewer software. Science mapping and performance analyses were implemented to demonstrate a systematic quantitative review and the characteristics of the research area. Moreover, by using co-occurrence of keywords, citation, bibliographic coupling, co-authorship, and co-citation analyses, the trends of the research area were revealed in detail. Findings indicated that the publications on sustainable aviation literature were mainly conducted between 2020 and 2023. Research areas of the publications were mainly on "engineering" and "energy fuels". In terms of number of the publications, "International Journal of Sustainable Aviation Fuel" was the most productive source and Heyne was the most productive author. Co-occurrence analysis demonstrated that "sustainable aviation fuel" was the most frequently used keyword. Furthermore, sustainable aviation research has shifted in focus toward more challenging and technology-oriented research over time. Citation analysis indicated that the most cited author was Heyne, the most cited study was Ma et al.'s study on "Aviation biofuel from renewable resources: routes, opportunities and challenges" and the most cited sources was "Energy". Among countries, the U.S.A was the most cited country and Chinese Academy of Sciences was the most cited organization. Bibliographic analysis showed that Heyne was the author with the highest connection strength. Co-authorship analysis demonstrated that Washington State University was the most collaborative organization. Finally, co-citation analysis of cited references indicated that fundamental subjects and related references were mainly sustainable aviation fuel, production of sustainable aviation fuel and its use in aviation studies. It is anticipated that results of this study would contribute to sustainable aviation research and ensure guidance and new perspectives for future research topics and directions on sustainable aviation.

Limnospira maxima has been adapted to grow in high salinity and in an economically alternative medium using industrial-grade fertilizers under harsh environmental conditions in Saudi Arabia. A sequence of scaling-up processes, from the laboratory to large-scale open raceways, was conducted along with gradual adaptation to environmental stress (salinity, light, temperature, pH). High biomass concentration at harvest point and areal productivity were achieved during the harsh summer season (1.122 g L-1 and 60.35 g m-2 day-1, respectively). The average protein content was found to be above 40 % of dry weight. Changes in the color and morphological appearance of the L. maxima culture were observed after direct exposure to sunlight in the outdoor raceways. These results demonstrate a successful and robust adaptation method for algal cultivation at outdoor large-scale in harsh environment (desert conditions) and also prove the feasibility of using hypersaline seawater (42 g kg-1) as an algal growth medium.

Recent breakthroughs emphasized the considerable potential of microalgae as a sustainable protein source. Microalgae are regarded as a substitute for protein-rich foods because of their high protein and amino acid content. However, despite their nutritional value, microalgae cannot be easily digested by humans due to the presence of cell walls. In the subsequent sections, protein extraction technology, the overview of the inherent challenges of the process, and the summary of the factors affecting protein extraction and utilization have been deliberated. Moreover, the review inspected the formation of proteolytic products, highlighting their diverse bioactivities, including antioxidant, antihypertensive, and immunomodulatory activities. Finally, the discussion extended to the emerging microalgal protein sourced foods, such as baked goods and nutritional supplements, as well as the sensory and marketing challenges encountered in the production of microalgal protein foods. The lack of consumer awareness about the health benefits of microalgae complicates its acceptance in the market. Long-standing challenges, such as high production costs, persist. Currently, multi-product utilization strategies are being developed to improve the economic viability of microalgae. By integrating economic, environmental, and social factors, microalgae protein can be sustainably developed to provide a reliable source of raw materials for the future food industry.

Food waste is an enormous challenge, with implications for the environment, society, and economy. Every year around the world, 1.3 billion tons of food are wasted or lost, and food waste-associated costs are around $2.6 trillion. Waste upcycling has been shown to mitigate these negative impacts. This study's optimized pomelo-peel biomass-derived porous material-based triboelectric nanogenerator (PP-TENG) had an open circuit voltage of 58 V and a peak power density of 254.8 mW/m2. As porous structures enable such triboelectric devices to respond sensitively to external mechanical stimuli, we tested our optimized PP-TENG's ability to serve as a self-powered sensor of biomechanical motions. As well as successfully harvesting sufficient mechanical energy to power light-emitting diodes and portable electronics, our PP-TENGs successfully monitored joint motions, neck movements, and gait patterns, suggesting their strong potential for use in healthcare monitoring and physical rehabilitation, among other applications. As such, the present work opens up various new possibilities for transforming a prolific type of food waste into value-added products and thus could enhance long-term sustainability while reducing such waste.

The ride-sharing trend is booming because of modern technologies and plays a significant role in transitioning to sustainable transportation methods. This study utilizes a comprehensive dataset collected from an online survey administered to over 1300 individuals in Bangladesh in 2023. Its specific focus is to examine the usage patterns of ride-sharing applications, such as Pathao and Uber. It builds upon previous research to analyze the factors influencing the use of these services and current trends in shared transportation. Additionally, it investigates the challenges associated with utilizing shared transportation amenities and proposes potential improvements to make ride-sharing or pooling more attractive. The study diligently worked to establish an inclusive framework and terminology to enhance policies and gain a more detailed understanding of the transportation choices and requirements of communities. To bridge the gap between theory and practice, we adopted an implementation-oriented research approach and conducted a comprehensive quantitative and inferential analysis of the survey data. The inclination of an individual to opt for or perceive collective or merged services depends on several demographic, geographical, and built-environment factors. The findings highlight the necessity of enhanced security measures, increased public awareness of ride-sharing benefits, and the formulation of legislative measures to promote sustainable mobility. Two examples of potential measures we have found to improve and encourage the use of ride-sharing services include reducing uncertainty about shared rides and minimizing passenger discomfort. These measures can be implemented through operational adjustments, government regulations, and employer programs. An essential conclusion was reached regarding the importance of prioritizing improvements in ride-sharing operations, rather than relying solely on cash incentives to promote behavioral change. Furthermore, it was determined that regardless of the changes, policies, or programs implemented, it is imperative to enhance public awareness and education.
