BACKGROUND: An ongoing nursing shortage poses significant challenges to the healthcare industry, prompting nursing education programs to find ways to increase nurse graduates. Unfortunately, the problem of attrition in nursing education is significant. Despite many years of attrition research, educators still seek to find answers to determine what factors cause some students to succeed and others to fail in nursing programs. Noncognitive variables, like grit, have been largely overlooked as potential solutions to the problem of attrition. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to explore the extent to which grit predicts academic potential in baccalaureate nursing students. METHODS: This cross-sectional study included a total of 63 baccalaureate nursing students in their first semester of a four-semester nursing program at a mid-sized public university in East Texas. Participants took an electronic survey reporting demographic information, completing the Short Grit Scale (Grit-S), and consenting to release of their pre-admission science grade point average (sGPA), ATI Test of Essential Academic Skills (TEAS) exam scores, and first-semester nursing GPA (nGPA). RESULTS: When added to sGPA and TEAS scores, grit scores were not a statistically significant predictor of nGPA. Students with high grit scores were just as likely to experience attrition as those with low scores, and grit did not statistically significantly predict first-semester attrition. CONCLUSIONS: Nurse educators are encouraged to pursue strategies to address attrition in nursing education. Traditional selection criteria of sGPA and TEAS exam scores were shown to be predictors of nGPA. Additional research is warranted to explore the relationship between noncognitive variables, especially grit, and nursing student academic potential.

Chlorphenamine maleate is a prohibited additive found in herbal teas and health foods. Excessive intake of this substance can result in adverse health effects. In this study, two novel haptens, PEM and bepotastine (PB1), mimicking chlorphenamine maleate structure were designed and synthesized based on molecular simulation for developing two corresponding polyclonal antibodies (PEM-Ab and PB1-Ab), respectively. Afterward, an indirect competitive enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ic-ELISA) was developed to quickly and accurately detect chlorphenamine maleate in herbal teas using PB1-Ab, which has a high sensitivity and specificity. For chlorphenamine maleate, the half-maximal inhibitory concentration (IC50) and limit of detection (LOD) of PB1-Ab under ideal circumstances were found to be 1.18 µg/L and 0.07 µg/L, respectively. Besides, an environmentally friendly sample pre-treatment strategy was employed that allowed easy and effective elimination of complex matrices. The ic-ELISA method observed the average recovery rate from 87.7% to 94.0% with the variance coefficient (CV) ranging from 2.2% to 9.4%. Additionally, the identification of 25 commercially available herbal teas using liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) further confirmed the validity of our detection. The results of the two methods are consistent. Overall, the proposed ic-ELISA could be an ultrasensitive and reliable method for chlorphenamine maleate adulterated in foods or exposure to the environment.

Herbal teas have attracted attention as functional beverages containing luteolin and apigenin, which exhibit antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects. The objective of this study was to develop a sensitive online automated method to determine these flavones' contents in herbal teas using in-tube solid-phase microextraction (IT-SPME) coupled with liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). These compounds were extracted and concentrated by IT-SPME using a Supel Q PLOT capillary column and then separated and detected within 6 min using a CAPCELL PAK C18 MG III analytical column and a negative electrospray ionization-mode multiple-reaction monitoring system by LC-MS/MS. The detection limits (S/N = 3) for luteolin and apigenin were 0.4 and 0.8 pg mL-1, respectively, and the calibration curves were linear in the range of 2-2000 pg mL-1 with correlation coefficients above 0.9995, and intra-day and inter-day precisions with relative standard deviations below 2.9 and 3.6% (n = 6), respectively. The luteolin and apigenin in herbal tea were quantified using IT-SPME/LC-MS/MS following the acid hydrolysis of their glycosides. Among the 10 herbal teas tested, luteolin was detected in peppermint and sage at concentrations of 375 and 99 µg mL-1, respectively, while apigenin was detected in German chamomile at 110 µg mL-1, which were higher than in the other herbal teas. The method is expected to be a useful method for evaluating the efficacy of luteolin and apigenin in herbal teas as functional beverages.

The leaves of industrial hemp, which have long been considered as a waste product, have been proven to contain numerous compounds that possess potential biological activity. One of the most interesting groups of compounds present are polyphenolic compounds, which, due to their specific structure, have a pronounced antioxidant and antihyperglycemic potential. This study aimed to detect biological activity, including antioxidant and antihyperglycemic potential, of water and water-alcoholic extracts of five commercially available hemp teas, followed by phytochemical profiling. Hemp aqueous and ethanolic extracts demonstrate potent antioxidant properties. Ethanol extracts are better scavengers of DPPH• and OH•, while aqueous extracts neutralize NO• better. Both types of extracts exhibit antioxidant potential in the catalase test and moderate XOD inhibition. Furthermore, aqueous extracts are potent α-amylase inhibitors, while ethanolic extracts demonstrate stronger anti-α-glucosidase activity, suggesting therapeutic potential for chronic diseases like insulin resistance or diabetes. Further detailed chemical characterization and in vivo studies are needed to validate these findings.

Background: In this clinical trial, we evaluated the effects of transcutaneous electroacupoint stimulation (TEAS) on postoperative fatigue (POF) in Parkinson disease (PD) patients undergoing deep brain stimulation (DBS) surgery. Methods: A total 60 PD patients undergoing DBS surgery were enrolled. They were randomized to receive either electrical stimulation [alternative frequency 2/10 Hz, dense and disperse, intensity adjusted to the maximum tolerated by the participants (6-15 mAmp)] via surface electrodes (TEAS group) or surface electrodes only without electrical stimulation (Con group) at bilateral Zusanli and Sanyinjiao acupuncture points. All participants received their assigned intervention (TEAS or Con) during the 1st stage of surgery [(except during microelectrode recording (MER)] and the entire 2nd stage of surgery. Intraoperative anesthetic requirements were adjusted based on bispectral index (BIS) monitor. POF was assessed by Christensen fatigue scales (ChrFS), along with Quality of Recovery-15 (QoR-15) and mini-mental state examination (MMSE) postoperatively over a 7-day-period. We recorded the usage of rescue analgesics and anti-emetics. Results: Fifty-nine patients' datasets were included for final analyses. Fewer patients in TEAS experienced severe POF (defined as ChrFS ≥6) at T3 than those in the Con group (TEAS vs. Con: 7 vs. 22, p < 0.001). During the 1st stage of surgery, more patients in Con group required dexmedetomidine infusion (TEAS vs. Con: 2 vs. 6; P < 0.01). Total dosages of propofol and remifanil during the 2nd stage of surgery were TEAS vs. Con: 374.7 ± 61.2 vs 421.5 ± 81.9; p < 0.001 and 572.3 ± 82.0 vs. 662 ± 148.2; P < 0.001, respectively. Postoperative rescue analgesics (TEAS vs. Con: 2 vs. 6; P < 0.001) were used less in the TEAS group. TEAS patients reported better POF, MMSE and QoR15 scores than those in the Con group during most of the assessment period. Conclusions: Intraoperative TEAS decreased the severity of POF, reduced intraoperative anesthetic requirements and facilitated post-DBS recovery in this group of PD patients.

Variations in cultivars and cultivation altitudes have significant impacts on tea flavour compounds however lack of comprehensive understanding. This study provided insights into differential accumulation of crucial flavour compounds in response to cultivars, cultivation altitudes, and processing. Twelve flavonoids (262.4 âˆ¼ 275.4 mg•g-1) and 20 amino acids (AAs) (56.5 âˆ¼ 64.8 mg•g-1) were comparative analyzed in 'Longjing 43' and 'Qunti' fresh leaves harvested at low (80 m, LA) and high (500 m, HA) altitudes. Additionally, an in-depth correlation unravelling of 31 alkaloids, 25 fatty acids, 31 saccharides, 8 organic acids, and 7 vitamins and flavonoids/AAs during green tea (GT) and black tea (BT) processing was performed. Enhenced flavonoid accumulation alongside higher AAs and saccharides in HA GT promoted a sweet/mellow flavour. Abundant flavonoids, AAs, and saccharides derivates in LA BT gave rise to a sweet aftertaste. The study presents an integrated illustration of major flavour compounds' differential accumulation patterns and their interrelations, providing new insights into the influence of cultivation conditions on tea flavour.

Background: Transcutaneous Electrical Acupoint Stimulation (TEAS) therapy opens up the possibility for individuals with Cancer-induced bone pain (CIBP) to receive a home-based, patient-controlled approach to pain management. The aim of this study is designed to evaluate the efficacy of patient-controlled TEAS (PC-TEAS) for relieving CIBP in patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Methods/Design: This is a study protocol for a prospective, triple-blind, randomized controlled trial. We anticipate enrolling 188 participants with NSCLC bone metastases who are also using potent opioid analgesics from 4 Chinese medical centers. These participants will be randomly assigned in a 1:1 ratio to either the true PC-TEAS or the sham PC-TEAS group. All participants will receive standard adjuvant oncology therapy. The true group will undergo patient-controlled TEAS intervention as needed, while the sham group will follow the same treatment schedule but with non-conductive gel patches. Each treatment course will span 7 days, with a total of 4 courses administered. There will be 4 assessment time points: baseline, the conclusion of weeks 4, 8, and 12. The primary outcome of this investigation is the response rate of the average pain on the Brief Pain Inventory (BPI) scale at week 4 after treatment. Secondary outcomes include pain related indicators, quality of life scale, mood scales, and routine blood counts on the assessment days. Any adverse events will be promptly addressed and reported if they occur. We will manage trial data using the EDC platform, with a data monitoring committee providing regular quality oversight. Discussion: PC-TEAS interventions offer an attempt to achieve home-based acupuncture treatment and the feasibility of achieving triple blinding in acupuncture research. This study is designed to provide more rigorous trial evidence for the adjuvant treatment of cancer-related pain by acupuncture and to explore a safe and effective integrative medicine scheme for CIBP. In the present study, we reviewed the literature as a systematic review to investigate the concentration of some metals (essential, none essential, and toxic metals) in herbal teas and their health risks. The search extended the literature from the database, including Google Scholar, PubMed, and Scopus, using the terms "herbal teas" combined with "heavy metals, essential metals, thyme, rosemary, chamomile, and tea" also with "iron, zinc, aluminum, chromium, cobalt, nickel, manganese, arsenic, cadmium, and lead" in titles and abstracts. The search was limited to articles published from 2012 to 2023 years. Initially, 212 articles were found; by detailed consideration, only 49 papers fit the inclusion criteria and were selected for further study. The mean of metal concentration, standard deviation, data distribution, and sample size were applied to generate data from the articles. The results indicated that all commonly consumed herbal teas included metals. None of them meet the requirements of the WHO requirements. However, more than 70% of their health risks are acceptable. The risks of arsenic and lead in tea and cadmium in black tea were considerably higher than in others. According to the review results, it is important to prevent heavy metal contamination of herbal teas by modifying cultivation patterns and also to prevent to consumption of low-quality herbal teas.

BACKGROUND: Silent information regulator 1 (SIRT1) plays a beneficial role in cerebral ischemic injury. Previous reports have demonstrated that transcutaneous electrical acupoint stimulation (TEAS) exerts a beneficial effect on ischemic stroke; however, whether SIRT1 participates in the underlying mechanism for the neuroprotective effects of TEAS against ischemic brain damage has not been confirmed. METHODS: The rat models of middle cerebral artery occlusion/reperfusion (MCAO/R) were utilized in the current experiment. After MCAO/R surgery, rats in TEAS, EC and EX group received TEAS intervention with or without the injection of EX527, the SIRT1 inhibitor. Neurological deficit scores, infarct volume, hematoxylin eosin (HE) staining and apoptotic cell number were measured. The results of RNA sequencing were analyzed to determine the differential expression changes of genes among sham, MCAO and TEAS groups, in order to investigate the possible pathological processes involved in cerebral ischemia and explore the protective mechanisms of TEAS. Moreover, oxidative stress markers including MDA, SOD, GSH and GSH-Px were measured with assay kits. The levels of the proinflammatory cytokines, such as IL-6, IL-1ß and TNF-α, were detected by ELISA assay, and Iba-1 (the microglia marker protein) positive cells was measured by immunofluorescence (IF). Western blot and IF were utilized to examine the levels of key molecules in SIRT1/FOXO3a and SIRT1/BRCC3/NLRP3 signaling pathways. RESULTS: TEAS significantly decreased brain infarcted size and apoptotic neuronal number, and alleviated neurological deficit scores and morphological injury by activating SIRT1. The results of RNA-seq and bioinformatic analysis revealed that oxidative stress and inflammation were the key pathological mechanisms, and TEAS alleviated oxidative injury and inflammatory reactions following ischemic stroke. Then, further investigation indicated that TEAS notably attenuated neuronal apoptosis, neuroinflammation and oxidative stress damage in the hippocampus of rats with MCAO/R surgery. Moreover, TEAS intervention in the MCAO/R model significantly elevated the expressions of SIRT1, FOXO3a, CAT, BRCC3, NLRP3 in the hippocampus. Furthermore, EX527, as the inhibitor of SIRT1, obviously abolished the anti-oxidative stress and anti-neuroinflammatory roles of TEAS, as well as reversed the TEAS-mediated elevation of SIRT1, FOXO3a, CAT and reduction of BRCC3 and NLRP3 mediated by following MCAO/R surgery. CONCLUSIONS: In summary, these findings clearly suggested that TEAS attenuated brain damage by suppressing apoptosis, oxidative stress and neuroinflammation through modulating SIRT1/FOXO3a and SIRT1/BRCC3/NLRP3 signaling pathways following ischemic stroke, which can be a promising treatment for stroke patients.

BACKGROUND: The consumption of various herbal infusions was and is common in the traditional Mediterranean diet, and apparently are used in many other regions of the world outside of the Mediterranean region. The present study aimed to investigate the consumption of herbal infusions/decoctions and tea in a nationally representative sample of Greece, considering also their Planetary use. METHODS: 3951 adult participants of the HYDRIA Survey (2013-2014) were included from the 13 regions of Greece. The diet of participants was assessed by two 24-h dietary recalls (24-HDR) and the Food Propensity Questionnaire (FPQ). All food items were analyzed through the HYDRIA Food Composition Tables. Information on socio-demographics, lifestyle, and health characteristics during the baseline was also provided. RESULTS: 26.9% of herbal infusions and decoctions consumers are ≥ 75 years old, pensioners with a low level of education, and residents of urban areas. However, 22.2% of tea consumers belong to the 18-34-year age group, being employed with an intermediate level of education and living in an urban area. Elderly men and women use more herbal infusions/decoctions (55.4%; 40.6%) compared to tea (41.8%; 25.2%). According to FPQ, 7.1% of men and 9.7% of women use herbal infusions and decoctions four times or more per week, while 7.1 and 10.9% of men and women, respectively, consume tea at the same frequency. Green tea, mountain tea (Sideritis spp.), and black tea are reported most frequently. In addition, mountain tea (61.2%), black tea (60.3%), mixed herbal infusions/decoctions (58.4%), and sage (59.4%) are consumed mostly at breakfast, while chamomile was reported mainly at dinner or during the night (42.4%). CONCLUSIONS: Based on the FPQ results, the moderate and high consumption of herbal infusions/decoctions and tea is low in Greece, especially among adults (18-64 years). Thus, our results indicate the existence of a generation gap to the attachment to the traditional Med Diet and the consumption of herbal infusions. The present study could encourage future research to focus on herbal infusions and decoctions consumption by other populations for cross-cultural comparison, as well as on emphasizing the value of consuming locally available herbs in a Planeterranean perspective.

European countries have recently started experimenting with growing and producing their own teas in small quantities, mainly for the specialty tea sector. To characterize European teas, this study investigated a set of five tea types obtained from different Camellia sinensis varieties/cultivars, representing various oxidation grades (green, white, yellow, oolong, black), all grown and processed in the only tea garden in Europe (in Germany) that focuses on all five types. Hot and cold brews were studied by measuring the total phenolic (TPC) and flavonoid contents (TFC), the antioxidant capacity and UV-Vis spectra, also with the objective of discriminating between the different tea types and the different plant varieties. The dried leaves were analyzed to measure the content of essential and toxic elements and by ATR-FTIR spectroscopy to determine a chemical fingerprint for identifying the tea varieties and types. The average levels of TPC (hot brew = 5.82 ± 2.06; cold brew = 5.4 ± 2.46 mM GAEq), TFC (hot brew = 0.87 ± 0.309; cold brew = 0.87 ± 0.413 mM CAEq), and antioxidant capacity (ORAC assay-hot brew = 20.9 ± 605; cold brew = 21.8 ± 8.0 mM TXEq, ABTS assay-hot brew = 15.2 ± 5.09; cold brew = 15.1 ± 5.8 mM TXEq, FRAP assay-hot brew = 9.2 ± 3.84; cold brew = 10.4 ± 5.23 mM AAEq) observed compared well with those from other parts of the world such as China, Africa, and Taiwan. The hazard quotient <1 and the hazard index of 0.14 indicate that there is no non-carcinogenic risk from consumption of these teas. The obtained information is essential for elucidating the characteristics and the impact of tea processing and tea variety on the health benefits of these tea products coming from a single European tea garden. This multifaceted approach would help tea growers in Europe increase their knowledge on the health attributes of the teas they grow, ultimately leading to optimization of the nutraceutical properties of these teas.

Rapid sensory profiling methods relying on consumers' perceptions are getting prevalent and broadly utilized by labs and companies to supersede conventional sensory profiling methodologies. Till now, various intensity-based sensory methods such as the newly proposed Pivot-Check-All-That-Apply (CATA) are limitedly developed and compared. In this investigation, Pivot Profile (PP), Rate-All-That-Apply (RATA), and Pivot-CATA methods were applied and validated using tea consumers and commercial Chinese tea products as samples. Data from three approaches were collected, analyzed by correspondence analysis (CA), and used to compare the three methods assessing the panel assessment process, sensory maps, confidence ellipses, and practical applications. Pivot-CATA exhibited a high similarity with RATA (RV = 0.873), and a lower similarity with PP (RV = 0.629). Of the three intensity-related methods, confidence ellipses on the RATA sensory map were the smallest and overlapped the least. However, Pivot-CATA consumed less time in collecting data and its questionnaire was more friendly to participants compared with PP and made the difference in intensity of samples more noticeable to the participants than RATA due to the existence of the pivot sample. Its experimental versatility also allows for a wide range of applications, indicating that the Pivot-CATA is an approach with great promise for routine use.

Objective: This trial was to examine the effect of transcutaneous electrical acupoint stimulation (TEAS) on postoperative cognitive function in older patients who underwent thoracoscopic pulmonary resection. Methods: This was a prospective, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study. 128 patients scheduled for surgery were randomly assigned to the TEAS group and sham-TEAS group. A standardized intervention of TEAS or sham-TEAS on the acupoints of Baihui (DU20) and bilateral Neiguan (PC6), Hegu (LI4), and Zusanli (ST36) from 30 min before anesthesia induction until the end of the surgery, combined with a general anesthetic protocol performed in the two groups respectively. The primary outcome was the incidence of postoperative cognitive dysfunction (POCD) assessed via the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) scale at each time point. The secondary outcomes included the results of the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) score, the Numerical Rating Scale (NRS) on pain and sleep, the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer Quality of Life (EORTC-QLQ-C30), and a chronic pain questionnaire at relative time points. Results: Participants who completed the 12-month trial of the two groups were well-matched in baseline demographic and clinical parameters. At postoperative day 1, day 7, and day 30 time points, the incidence of POCD in the sham-TEAS group was always significantly higher than in the TEAS group (65.4% vs 20%, 43.6% vs 7.3%, 40% vs 3.6%, all P < 0.001). Also, the TEAS group showed better scores of MMSE, sleep, and pain compared with the sham-TEAS group (all P < 0.001). At 6 and 12 months points, the global health scores of the TEAS group were still significantly higher than the sham-TEAS group, and the prevalence of chronic pain was significantly lower than the sham-TEAS group (all P < 0.05). Conclusion: TEAS could effectively improve the postoperative cognitive function and long-term life quality of geriatric patients with lung cancer.

Introduction: In recent years, scented black tea has attracted much attention due to its pleasant floral aroma and mellow flavor, but little research has been carried out on its flavor metabolic profile. Methods: In this study, the flavor metabolic profiles of unscented, Chloranthus spicatus scented, and Osmanthus fragrans (Thunb.) Lour. scented Congou black teas were investigated using full-spectrum metabolomics analysis method, the first time that the flavor profiles of scented black tea were characterized in detail. Results and Discussion: The results revealed that a total of 3,128 metabolites were detected in the three teas. Based on the criteria of variable importance in the project >1 and fold change ≥2 or ≤ 0.5, 761 non-volatile metabolites and 509 volatile metabolites were filtered as differential metabolites. Many differential non-volatile metabolites belonged to flavonoids, phenolic acids, and terpenoids. Floral, fruity and herbaceous volatile metabolites were significantly up-regulated in Chloranthus spicatus scented Congou black tea while sweet and fruity volatile metabolites were significantly down-regulated in Osmanthus fragrans (Thunb.) Lour. scented Congou black tea. The results contribute to a better understanding of the scenting techniques on the flavor quality of scented black teas and provide some information on the flavor chemistry theory of scented black teas.

BACKGROUND: Post-operative pain of endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) is always be overlooked and undertreated by endoscopists. However, the incidence of moderate to severe pain after ESD is as high as 44.9% to 62.8%, which can greatly affect the patient's recovery, reduce their satisfaction, and extend their hospital stay. Transcutaneous electrical acupoint stimulation (TEAS) have been shown to reduce postoperative pain and enhance gastrointestinal (GI) function recovery in patients undergoing abdomen surgery. However, there is no evidence regarding on the effect of TEAS on post-operative pain and complications in patients undergoing ESD. Therefore, we aim to investigate whether perioperative TEAS treatment is superior to the sham acupuncture in terms of post-ESD pain and GI function recovery. METHODS: This study is a prospective, randomized controlled trail, which is single-blinded and in single center. A total of 120 patients undergoing elective gastric and esophageal ESD surgery in Beijing Friendship Hospital, Capital Medical University, will be involved in this study. These individuals will be stratified according to the type of ESD surgery (i.e. gastric or esophageal procedure) and be randomly divided into two groups. L14, PC6, ST36 and ST37 will be stimulated at the TEAS treatment group, and the control group will receive simulation at four sham acupoints. The primary outcome is post-EDS VAS score at the time of entering PACU, 10 min, 20 min, 30 min, 1 h, 2 h, 4 h, 6 h, 18 h, 24 h, 48 h after the surgery. The secondary outcomes include the anesthesia-associated parameters, sedation score, nausea and vomiting score, shivering score, recovery of gastrointestinal function, satisfaction of patients to anesthesia, incidence of postoperative complications, QLQ-C30 life quality scale, and the economic indicators. DISCUSSION: The results of this study will confirm that continuous preventive application of TEAS can alleviate the postoperative pain among patients with gastric and esophageal ESD surgery and accelerate the recovery of post-ESD gastrointestinal function. Due to growing consumer interest in fitness and wellbeing, foods and beverages with therapeutic and functional qualities are in higher demand. In addition to being significant staple crops and major providers of nutrition and energy, cereals are rich in bioactive phytochemicals with health benefits. Cereal grains offer a lot of promise for processing into functional beverages since these include a wide variety of bioactive phytochemicals such as phenolic compounds, carotenoids, dietary fibres, phytosterols, tocols, gamma-oryzanol, and phytic acid. Despite the fact that a wide variety of beverages made from cereal grains are produced globally, they have received very little technological and scientific attention. The beverages confer replacements for milk made from cereal grains, roasted cereal grain teas and fermented non-alcoholic cereal grain drinks. This review emphasizes on the three primary kinds of functional beverages made from cereal grains. Further, the potential applications and directions for the future related to these beverages are discussed with elaborated processing methods, health benefits and product attributes. Cereal grain-based beverages may represent a promising new class of healthy functional beverages in our daily lives as the food industry gets more diverse.

Tea is grown around the world under extremely diverse geographic and climatic conditions, namely, in China, India, the Far East and Africa. However, recently, growing tea also appears to be feasible in many regions of Europe, from where high-quality, chemical-free, organic, single-estate teas have been obtained. Hence, the aim of this study was to characterize the health-promoting properties in terms of the antioxidant capacity of traditional hot brews as well as cold brews of black, green and white teas produced across the European territory using a panel of antioxidant assays. Total polyphenol/flavonoid contents and metal chelating activity were also determined. For differentiating the characteristics of the different tea brews, ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis) spectroscopy and ultra-high performance liquid chromatography coupled with high-resolution mass spectrometry were employed. Overall, our findings demonstrate for the first time that teas grown in Europe are good quality teas that are endowed with levels of health-promoting polyphenols and flavonoids and that have an antioxidant capacity similar to those grown in other parts of the world. This research is a vital contribution to the characterization of European teas, providing essential and important information for both European tea growers and consumers, and could be of guidance and support for the selection of teas grown in the old continent, along with having the best brewing conditions for maximizing the health benefits of tea.

Atropine and scopolamine belong to the tropane alkaloid (TA) family of natural toxins. They can contaminate teas and herbal teas and appear in infusions. Therefore, this study focused on analyzing atropine and scopolamine in 33 samples of tea and herbal tea infusions purchased in Spain and Portugal to determine the presence of these compounds in infusions brewed at 97 °C for 5 min. A rapid microextraction technique (µSPEed®) followed by high-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS/MS) was used to analyze the selected TAs. The results showed that 64% of the analyzed samples were contaminated by one or both toxins. White and green teas were generally more contaminated than black and other herbal teas. Of the 21 contaminated samples, 15 had concentrations above the maximum limit for liquid herbal infusions (0.2 ng/mL) set by Commission Regulation (EU) 2021/1408. In addition, the effects of heating conditions (time and temperature) on atropine and scopolamine standards and naturally contaminated samples of white, green, and black teas were evaluated. The results showed that at the concentrations studied (0.2 and 4 ng/mL), there was no degradation in the standard solutions. Brewing with boiling water (decoction) for 5 and 10 min allowed for higher extraction of TAs from dry tea to infusion water.

Traceability and authentication of protected designation of origin (PDO) tea is an important prerequisite to safeguard its production and distribution system. Here, indicator displacement array (IDA) sensors consisting of natural anthocyanidins and edible metal ions were developed to authenticate PDO and non-PDO Longjing from different origins. Five IDA elements were selected for constructing sensors, achieved by an indicator displacement reaction after adding epigallocatechin gallate solution. The obtained sensors were subsequently used for real tea samples. Unsupervised algorithms were used for data exploration among PDO and non-PDO teas. The supervised support vector machine (SVM) model further achieved accurate authentication of PDO and non-PDO Longjing with a correct classification rate of 100% for the 26 validated samples. The developed IDA sensor thus achieves accurate authentication of PDO tea in a hazard-free and cost-efficient way, providing a useful tool for origin authentication of other agricultural products.

Objective: To determine the comparative effects of acupuncture and related techniques-assisted general anesthesia (GA) on the total dosage of main anesthetic drugs administered during surgery. Methods: The following data bases were searched on June 30, 2022: Embase, Cochrane, PubMed, Web of Science, CBM, CNKI, WANFANG and VIP to find randomized controlled trials (RCTs). A random-effects Bayesian network meta-analysis and subgroup analysis were employed. The GRADE system was applied to make evidence quality assessments. The intraoperative total doses of propofol and remifentanil were the primary and secondary outcomes, respectively. The weighted mean difference (WMD) with 95% confidence intervals (CI) were determined to measure the size of any potential effect. Results: Seventy-six RCTs that involved 5,877 patients were included in the analysis. Compared with GA, a significant decrease in the total dose of propofol was found for manual acupuncture (MA) assisted GA (WMD = -101.26 mg, 95% CI [-172.98, -27.06]) with moderate quality, electroacupuncture (EA) assisted GA (WMD = -54.25 mg, 95% CI [-87.25, -22.37]) with moderate quality and transcutaneous electrical acupoint stimulation (TEAS) assisted GA (WMD = -39.99 mg, 95% CI [-57.96, -22.73]) with moderate quality, respectively. A significant reduction in the total dose of remifentanil was found in favor of EA-assisted GA (WMD = -372.33 µg, 95% CI [-558.44, -196.43]) with low quality and TEAS-assisted GA (WMD = -215.77 µg, 95% CI [-305.23, -128.04]) with low quality. According to the surface under cumulative ranking area (SUCRA), MA-assisted GA and EA-assisted GA ranked first in the reduction of the total dosage of propofol and remifentanil administered, with a probability of 0.85 and 0.87, respectively. Conclusions: Both EA- and TEAS-assisted GA significantly reduced the intraoperative total dosage of propofol and remifentanil administered. EA produced the greatest reduction in these two outcomes compared to TEAS. Although all the comparisons are low to moderate based on GRADE evidence, EA seems to be an advisable acupuncture technique to reduce the dosage of anesthetic drugs required in surgical patients under GA.
