RESUMO

Urine cytology is a non-invasive, cost-efficient, and sensitive test to detect high-grade urothelial carcinoma. The Paris System (TPS) for Reporting Urinary Cytology is an evidence-based system that uses the risk of malignancy to guide patient management. Since its inception, TPS has standardized urine cytology reports, facilitating communication among pathologists and between pathologists and clinicians. It is imperative to correlate the urine cytology findings with the concurrent tissue sample to avoid false-negative and false-positive results when possible. Several ancillary tests and artificial intelligence algorithms are being developed to increase the accuracy of urine cytology interpretation.

Terpenoids play a crucial role in plant growth and development, as well as in regulating resistance mechanisms. Terpene synthase (TPS) serves as the final step in the synthesis process of terpenoids. However, a comprehensive bioinformatics analysis of the TPS gene family in Triticum plants had not previously been systematically undertaken. In this study, a total of 531 TPS members were identified in Triticum plants. The evolutionary tree divided the TPS proteins into five subfamilies: Group1, Group2, Group3, Group4, and Group5. The results of the duplication events analysis showed that TD and WGD were major driving forces during the evolution of the TPS family. The cis-element analysis showed that the TPS genes were related to plant growth and development and environmental stress. Moreover, the GO annotation displayed that the biological function of TPS was relatively conserved in wheat plants. The RNA-seq data showed that the rice and wheat TPS genes responded to low-temperature stress and exhibited significantly different expression patterns. This research shed light on the functions of TPSs in responding to abiotic stress and demonstrated their modulatory potential during root development. These findings provide a foundation for further and deeper investigation of the TPSs' functions in Triticum plants.

Cananga odorata is known as a natural perfume tree of the Annonaceae family in Magnoliales. However, its phylogenetic position and the molecular mechanisms involved in the biosynthesis of the floral volatile organic compounds (VOCs) remain unclear. Here, by combining a variety of sequencing platforms, we present a telomere-to-telomere (T2T) genome of C. odorata with 735.83 Mb, which represents the highest integrity and assembly quality of genome in magnoliid plants reported to date. Phylogenetic analysis based on multiple datasets and approaches showed that C. odorata, as a member of magnoliids, is sister to eudicots, after their divergence from monocots. Metabolomic of VOCs in the essential oil and flowers scent showed that sesquiterpenes, especially ß-caryophyllene, were the major compounds. Two CoTPS21 homologues derived from tandem duplication events were highly expressed during flower development and were identified as the key sesquiterpene synthases for the production of ß-caryophyllene. In addition, CoSPL3 and CoSPL9 were considered as potential transcription factors for activating the expression of CoTPS21 homologues. Our results shed light on the molecular mechanisms underlying the biosynthesis of the unique floral fragrance in C. odorata and provide new insights into the phylogenetic position of magnoliids.

Tumor immunological characterization includes evaluation of tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes (TILs) and programmed cell death protein ligand-1 (PD-L1) expression. This study investigated TIL distribution, its prognostic value, and PD-L1 expression in metastatic and matched primary tumors (PTs). Specimens from 550 pan-cancer patients of the SHIVA01 trial (NCT01771458) with available metastatic biopsy and 111 matched PTs were evaluated for TILs and PD-L1. Combined positive score (CPS), tumor proportion score (TPS), and immune cell (IC) score were determined. TILs and PD-L1 were assessed according to PT organ of origin, histological subtype, and metastatic biopsy site. We found that TIL distribution in metastases did not vary according to PT organ of origin, histological subtype, or metastatic biopsy site, with a median of 10% (range: 0-70). TILs were decreased in metastases compared to PT (20% [5-60] versus 10% [0-40], p < 0.0001). CPS varied according to histological subtype (p = 0.02) and biopsy site (p < 0.02). TPS varied according to PT organ of origin (p = 0.003), histological subtype (p = 0.0004), and metastatic biopsy site (p = 0.00004). TPS was higher in metastases than in PT (p < 0.0001). TILs in metastases did not correlate with overall survival. In conclusion, metastases harbored fewer TILs than matched PT, regardless of PT organ of origin, histological subtype, and metastatic biopsy site. PD-L1 expression increased with disease progression. © 2024 The Author(s). This research delves into a detailed exploration of the thermal decomposition behavior of bio-based polymers, specifically thermoplastic starch (TPS) and polylactic acid (PLA), under varying heating rates in a nitrogen atmosphere. This study employs thermogravimetry (TG) to investigate, providing comprehensive insights into the thermal stability of these eco-friendly polymers. In particular, the TPS kinetic model is examined, encompassing the decomposition of three distinct fractions. In contrast, PLA exhibits a simplified kinetic behavior requiring only a fraction described by a zero-order model. The kinetic study involves a systematic investigation into the individual contributions of key components within TPS, including starch, glycerin, and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA). This detailed analysis contributes to a comprehensive understanding of the thermal degradation process of TPS and PLA, enabling the optimization of processing conditions and the prediction of material behavior across varying thermal environments. Furthermore, the incorporation of different starch sources and calcium carbonate additives in TPS enhances our understanding of the polymer's thermal stability, offering insights into potential applications in diverse industries.

Immune checkpoint inhibitors and immune-related biomarkers are increasingly investigated in rectal cancer (RC). We retrospectively analysed PD-L1 expression in diagnostic biopsy and resection samples from RC patients treated at our centre between 2000 and 2020. PD-L1 immunostaining (22C3 clone) was evaluated according to tumour proportion (TPS), immune cell (ICS), and the combined positive score (CPS). Eighty-three patients were included. At diagnosis, PD-L1 expression ≥1%/≥5% was observed in 15.4%/0%, 80.7%/37.4%, and 69.2%/25.6% of patients based on TPS, ICS, and CPS, respectively. At surgery, the respective figures were 4.6%/1.5%, 60.2%/32.5%, and 50.7%/26.2%. Using the 1% cut-off and regardless of the scoring system, PD-L1 was less expressed in surgery than biopsy samples (p ≤ 0.04). In paired specimens, PD-L1-ICS reduction was especially observed following neoadjuvant long-course (chemo)radiotherapy (p = 0.03). PD-L1-ICS of ≥5% in surgical samples (HR: 0.17; p = 0.02), and a biopsy-to-surgery increase in PD-L1-ICS (HR: 0.19; p = 0.04) was predictive for longer disease-free survival, while the PD-L1-ICS of either ≥1% (HR 0.28; p = 0.04) or ≥5% (HR 0.19; p = 0.03) in surgical samples and the biopsy-to-surgery increase in PD-L1-ICS (HR: 0.20; p = 0.04) were associated with better overall survival. Our study suggests that PD-L1 expression in RC is largely reflective of immune cell infiltration, and its presence/increase in surgical samples predicts better outcomes.

INTRODUCTION: Leadless pacemakers are associated with a low risk of infection, so indications for their removal are rare. One can expect that the dwell time of the device correlates with a more difficult removal, but it has not been proved so far. METHODS AND RESULTS: We present a case of a patient in whom MICRA transcatheter pacing system was successfully removed with nondedicated commercially available tools, 70 months after implantation. CONCLUSION: A successful removal of the MICRA leadless pacemaker is possible, and may be safe even many years after the device implantation, despite a lack of dedicated tools. Due to the potential risk of complications, the benefits and risks of the procedure should be weighted before making a final decision.

Pyraclonil is a new type of pyrazole herbicide, whose photochemical fate in aqueous solution has not been reported yet. In this study, effects on the photolysis rate such as light source, pH, NO3-, Fe3+, fulvic acid (FA) and riboflavin (RF) were investigated. Pyraclonil photodegraded in pure water under both UV and simulated sunlight with half-lives of 32.29 min and 42.52 h, respectively. Under UV, the degradation rate of pyraclonil in pH 4 solution (0.0299 ± 0.0033 min-1) was about twice higher than that in pH 9 (0.0160 ± 0.0063 min-1). Under simulated sunlight, low concentration (0.1-1 mg/L) of FA, NO3-, Fe3+ and RF noticeably promoted the photodegradation of pyraclonil. Then, with the combination of experimental UPLC-Q-TOF/MS and computational calculation of density functional theory (DFT), fourteen transformation products (TPs) of pyraclonil were identified with possible mechanism of C-N bond cleavage, photorearrangement, demethylation, hydroxylation and oxidation. Additionally, acute toxicity assessment was conducted through ECOSAR prediction and laboratory bioassays. The prediction results indicated that toxicity of TP157 to daphnid and green algae was 1.3 and 1.4 times higher than that of the parent, respectively. The bioassay results indicated that toxicities of TP157 and TP263 to C. vulgaris were about 1.6 and 5.9 times higher than that of the parent, respectively. The results provided a reference for elucidating the potential hazards of pyraclonil to non-target organisms and promoting its rational use.

Trehalose-6-phosphate synthase (TPS1) was identified as a virulence factor for Cryptococcus neoformans and a promising therapeutic target. This study reveals previously unknown roles of TPS1 in evasion of host defenses during pulmonary and disseminated phases of infection. In the pulmonary infection model, TPS1-deleted (tps1Δ) Cryptococci are rapidly cleared by mouse lungs whereas TPS1-sufficent WT (H99) and revertant (tps1Δ:TPS1) strains expand in the lungs and disseminate, causing 100% mortality. Rapid pulmonary clearance of tps1Δ mutant is T-cell independent and relies on its susceptibility to lung resident factors and innate immune factors, exemplified by tps1Δ but not H99 inhibition in a coculture with dispersed lung cells and its rapid clearance coinciding with innate leukocyte infiltration. In the disseminated model of infection, which bypasses initial lung-fungus interactions, tps1Δ strain remains highly attenuated. Specifically, tps1Δ mutant is unable to colonize the lungs from the bloodstream or expand in spleens but is capable of crossing into the brain, where it remains controlled even in the absence of T cells. In contrast, strains H99 and tps1Δ:TPS1 rapidly expand in all studied organs, leading to rapid death of the infected mice. Since the rapid pulmonary clearance of tps1Δ mutant resembles a response to acapsular strains, the effect of tps1 deletion on capsule formation in vitro and in vivo was examined. Tps1Δ cryptococci form capsules but with a substantially reduced size. In conclusion, TPS1 is an important virulence factor, allowing C. neoformans evasion of resident pulmonary and innate defense mechanisms, most likely via its role in cryptococcal capsule formation.

BACKGROUND: Terpenes are important components of plant aromas, and terpene synthases (TPSs) are the key enzymes driving terpene diversification. In this study, we characterized the volatile terpenes in five different Chrysanthemum nankingense tissues. In addition, genome-wide identification and expression analysis of TPS genes was conducted utilizing an improved chromosome-scale genome assembly and tissue-specific transcriptomes. The biochemical functions of three representative TPSs were also investigated. RESULTS: We identified tissue-specific volatile organic compound (VOC) and volatile terpene profiles. The improved Chrysanthemum nankingense genome assembly was high-quality, including a larger assembled size (3.26 Gb) and a better contig N50 length (3.18 Mb) compared to the old version. A total of 140 CnTPS genes were identified, with the majority representing the TPS-a and TPS-b subfamilies. The chromosomal distribution of these TPS genes was uneven, and 26 genes were included in biosynthetic gene clusters. Closely-related Chrysanthemum taxa were also found to contain diverse TPS genes, and the expression profiles of most CnTPSs were tissue-specific. The three investigated CnTPS enzymes exhibited versatile activities, suggesting multifunctionality. CONCLUSIONS: We systematically characterized the structure and diversity of TPS genes across the Chrysanthemum nankingense genome, as well as the potential biochemical functions of representative genes. Our results provide a basis for future studies of terpene biosynthesis in chrysanthemums, as well as for the breeding of improved chrysanthemum varieties.

Introduction: The strong aromatic characteristics of the tender leaves of Toona sinensis determine their quality and economic value. Methods and results: Here, GC-MS analysis revealed that caryophyllene is a key volatile compound in the tender leaves of two different T. sinensis varieties, however, the transcriptional mechanisms controlling its gene expression are unknown. Comparative transcriptome analysis revealed significant enrichment of terpenoid synthesis pathway genes, suggesting that the regulation of terpenoid synthesis-related gene expression is an important factor leading to differences in aroma between the two varieties. Further analysis of expression levels and genetic evolution revealed that TsTPS18 is a caryophyllene synthase, which was confirmed by transient overexpression in T. sinensis and Nicotiana benthamiana leaves. Furthermore, we screened an AP2/ERF transcriptional factor ERF-IX member, TsERF66, for the potential regulation of caryophyllene synthesis. The TsERF66 had a similar expression trend to that of TsTPS18 and was highly expressed in high-aroma varieties and tender leaves. Exogenous spraying of MeJA also induced the expression of TsERF66 and TsTPS18 and promoted the biosynthesis of caryophyllene. Transient overexpression of TsERF66 in T. sinensis significantly promoted TsTPS18 expression and caryophyllene biosynthesis. Discussion: Our results showed that TsERF66 promoted the expression of TsTPS18 and the biosynthesis of caryophyllene in T. sinensis leaves, providing a strategy for improving the aroma of tender leaves.

OBJECTIVE: This meta-analysis aims to evaluate the efficacy and safety of antiprogressive disease (PD)-(L)1-based neoadjuvant therapy in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) patients and identify potential prognostic biomarkers. DATA SOURCES: Databases were systematically searched for prospective clinical trials evaluating the efficacy and safety of anti-PD-(L)1-based neoadjuvant therapy for HNSCC before January 12, 2024. REVIEW METHODS: We estimated the efficacy and safety of neoadjuvant immune checkpoint inhibitors. Subgroup and sensitivity analyses were further performed. RESULTS: A total of 570 patients from 20 studies were included. The pooled major pathological response (MPR), pathological complete response (pCR), and partial pathological response (PPR) rates were 30.7%, 15.3%, and 68.2%, respectively. Surgical complications, surgical delayed rate, all grade treatment-related adverse effects (TRAEs) and ≥Grade 3 TRAEs were 0.6%, 0.3%, 82.6%, and 9.7%, respectively. Best MPR or pCR rate was detected in patients receiving neoadjuvant anti-PD-(L)1 therapy + radiotherapy (with MPR rate of 75.5% and pCR rate of 51.1%) and neoadjuvant anti-PD-(L)1 therapy + chemotherapy groups (with MPR rate of 57.5% and pCR rate of 26.7%). No differences were detected in subgroups stratified by neoadjuvant treatment cycles, human papillomavirus (HPV) status, and tumor location. Patients with baseline Combined Positive Score (CPS) ≥ 20 have higher MPR and pCR rates compared to patients with CPS < 20. High Tumor Cell Proportion Score was also associated with MPR and pCR. Objective response rate is a strong predictor of MPR (odds ratio [OR] = 7.78, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 3.20%-18.91%) and pCR (OR = 3.24, 95% CI = 1.40%-7.48%). CONCLUSION: Anti-PD-(L)1-based neoadjuvant therapy was effective and safe for HNSCC patients.

Postmortem body curvature introduces error in fish morphometric data. Compared to living fish, the causes of such body curvature in fossils may be due to additive taphonomic processes that have been widely studied. However, a protocol that helps to correct its effect upon morphometric data remains unexplored. Here, we test two different mathematical approaches (multivariate regression and the so-called 'unbending functions') available to tackle fish geometric morphometric data in two exceptionally preserved gonorynchiformes fossil fishes, Rubiesichthys gregalis and Gordichthys conquensis, from the Las Hoyas deposits (Early Cretaceous, Spain). Although both methods successfully correct body curvature (i.e., removing misleading geometric variation), our results show that traditional approaches applied in living fishes might not be appropriate to fossil ones, because of the additional anatomical alterations. Namely, the best result for 2D fossil fishes is achieved by correcting the arching of the specimens (mathematically "unbending" them). Ultimately, the effect of body curvature on morphometric data is largely taxon independent and morphological diversity mitigates its effect, but size is an important factor to take into account (because larger individuals tend to be less curved).

Ablative composites serve as sacrificial materials, protecting underlying materials from high-temperature environments by endothermic reactions. These materials undergo various phenomena, including thermal degradation, pyrolysis, gas generation, char formation, erosion, gas flow, and different modes of heat transfer (such as conduction, convection, and radiation), all stemming from these endothermic reactions. These phenomena synergize to form a protective layer over the underlying materials. Carbon, with its superb mechanical properties and various available forms, is highlighted, alongside phenolics known for good adhesion and fabric ability and elastomers valued for flexibility and resilience. This study focuses on recent advancements in carbon-and-phenolic and carbon-and-elastomeric composites, considering factors such as erosion speed; high-temperature resistance; tensile, bending, and compressive strength; fiber-matrix interaction; and char formation. Various authors' calculations regarding the percentage reduction in linear ablation rate (LAR) and mass ablation rate (MAR) are discussed. These analyses inform potential advancements in the field of carbon/phenolic and carbon/elastomeric ablative composites.

For practical reasons, in many studies PD-L1 expression is measured by combined positive score (CPS) from a single tumor sample. This does not reflect the heterogeneity of PD-L1 expression in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC). We investigated the extent and relevance of PD-L1 expression heterogeneity in HNSCC analyzing primary tumors and recurrences (LRs), as well as metastases. Tumor tissue from 200 HNSCC patients was immunohistochemically stained for PD-L1 and analyzed using image-analysis software QuPath v3.4 with multiple specimens per patient. CPS was ≥20 in 25.6% of primary tumors. Intra-tumoral heterogeneity led to a therapeutically relevant underestimation of PD-L1 expression in 28.7% of patients, when only one specimen per patient was analyzed. Inter-tumoral differences in PD-L1 expression between primary tumors and lymph node metastasis (LNM) or LR occurred in 44.4% and 61.5% (CPS) and in 40.6% and 50% of cases (TPS). Overall survival was increased in patients with CPS ≥ 1 vs. CPS < 1 in primary tumors and LNM (hazard ratio: 0.46 and 0.35; p < 0.005); CPS in LR was not prognostic. Our analysis shows clinically relevant intra- and inter-sample heterogeneity of PD-L1 expression in HNSCC. To account for heterogeneity and improve patient selection for immunotherapy, multiple sample analyses should be performed, particularly in patients with CPS/TPS < 1.

BACKGROUND: Rose myrtle (Rhodomyrtus tomentosa (Ait.) Hassk), is an evergreen shrub species belonging to the family Myrtaceae, which is enriched with bioactive volatiles (α-pinene and ß-caryophyllene) with medicinal and industrial applications. However, the mechanism underlying the volatile accumulation in the rose myrtle is still unclear. RESULTS: Here, we present a chromosome-level genomic assembly of rose myrtle (genome size = 466 Mb, scaffold N50 = 43.7 Mb) with 35,554 protein-coding genes predicted. Through comparative genomic analysis, we found that gene expansion and duplication had a potential contribution to the accumulation of volatile substances. We proposed that the action of positive selection was significantly involved in volatile accumulation. We identified 43 TPS genes in R. tomentosa. Further transcriptomic and TPS gene family analyses demonstrated that the distinct gene subgroups of TPS may contribute greatly to the biosynthesis and accumulation of different volatiles in the Myrtle family of shrubs and trees. The results suggested that the diversity of TPS-a subgroups led to the accumulation of special sesquiterpenes in different plants of the Myrtaceae family. CONCLUSIONS: The high quality chromosome-level rose myrtle genome and the comparative analysis of TPS gene family open new avenues for obtaining a higher commercial value of essential oils in medical plants.

Recently, carbon fiber (CF) has prevailed as the primary material used in radiotherapy couchtops. Modern couchtops incorporate the CF sandwich design, in which 2 thin CF plates sandwich an air-equivalent polymeric foam. Developments in radiotherapy necessitate irradiation from posterior angles through the couchtop. However, the presence of the couchtop needs proper modeling in the treatment planning system (TPS) due to attenuation; otherwise, the tumor dose is reduced. In the current study, an effort was made with the intent of finding the optimum electron density (ED) values for Elekta's iBEAM Evo couchtop components (CF and Foam Core (FC)) for its proper modeling in Monaco TPS. Also, the attenuation of the beam due to the couchtop's presence was investigated. A cylindrical phantom with an ionization chamber positioned at the isocenter was utilized for the measurements. The phantom was placed centrally on the iBEAM Evo couchtop and was irradiated with an Elekta Infinity linear accelerator's 6, 10, and 15 MV photon beams. The gantry angle was set at 0o and from 120o to 180o with an increment of 10o. The same procedure was designed and followed in Monaco TPS. Measured and calculated dose values were compared by calculating percentage deviation (PD). Attenuation has also been calculated using the measurements of the experimental setup and the Monaco calculations. The values of ED that provided the optimum agreement between measured and Monaco-calculated dose values while minimizing PD were 0.55 g/cm3 for CF, and 0.1 g/cm3 for FC. The maximum values of PD for the beams of 6, 10, and 15 MV were -0.62%, +1,78%, and +2.35%, respectively, for a 5 × 5 cm2 field size. Furthermore, Monaco predicted attenuation from 1.83% to 6.26% (calculated values), while from the measurements, an attenuation from 1.44% to 5.75% (measured values) regarding the posterior angles was found. Thus, good agreement was verified between the TPS calculations and experimental measurements. Elekta's iBEAM Evo couchtop modeling was successfully validated in Monaco TPS. The couchtop's presence alters the patient's dose regarding irradiation from the posterior angles. Due to the attenuation of the beam, proper incorporation, modeling, and validation of the couchtop are necessary to improve the radiotherapy outcome and ensure that each patient receives the optimal treatment.

In recent years, there has been a paradigm shift in the building sector towards more sustainable, resource efficient, and renewable materials. Bio-based insulation derived from renewable resources, such as plant or animal fibres, is one promising group of such materials. Compared to mineral wool and polystyrene-based insulation materials, these bio-based insulation materials generally have a slightly higher thermal conductivity, and they are significantly more hygroscopic, two factors that need to be considered when using these bio-based insulation materials. This study assesses the hygrothermal properties of three bio-based insulation materials: eelgrass, grass, and wood fibre. All three have the potential to be locally sourced in Sweden. Mineral wool (stone wool) was used as a reference material. Hygrothermal material properties were measured with dynamic vapour sorption (DVS), transient plane source (TPS), and sorption calorimetry. Moisture buffering of the insulation materials was assessed, and their thermal insulation capacity was tested on a building component level in a hot box that exposed the materials to a steady-state climate, simulating in-use conditions in, e.g., an external wall. The tested bio-based insulation materials have significantly different sorption properties to stone wool and have higher thermal conductivity than what the manufacturers declared. The hot-box experiments showed that the insulating capacity of the bio-based insulators cannot be reliably calculated from the measured thermal conductivity alone. The results of this study could be used as input data for numerical simulations and analyses of the thermal and hygroscopic behaviour of these bio-based insulation materials.

MAIN CONCLUSION: Overexpression of BnaC02.TPS8 increased low N and high sucrose-induced anthocyanin accumulation. Anthocyanin plays a crucial role in safeguarding photosynthetic tissues against high light, UV radiation, and oxidative stress. Their accumulation is triggered by low nitrogen (N) stress and elevated sucrose levels in Arabidopsis. Trehalose-6-phosphate (T6P) serves as a pivotal signaling molecule, sensing sucrose availability, and carbon (C) metabolism. However, the mechanisms governing the regulation of T6P synthase (TPS) genes responsible for anthocyanin accumulation under conditions of low N and high sucrose remain elusive. In a previous study, we demonstrated the positive impact of a cytoplasm-localized class II TPS protein 'BnaC02.TPS8' on photosynthesis and seed yield improvement in Brassica napus. The present research delves into the biological role of BnaC02.TPS8 in response to low N and high sucrose. Ectopic overexpression of BnaC02.TPS8 in Arabidopsis seedlings resulted in elevated shoot T6P levels under N-sufficient conditions, as well as an increased carbon-to-nitrogen (C/N) ratio, sucrose accumulation, and starch storage under low N conditions. Overexpression of BnaC02.TPS8 in Arabidopsis heightened sensitivity to low N stress and high sucrose levels, accompanied by increased anthocyanin accumulation and upregulation of genes involved in flavonoid biosynthesis and regulation. Metabolic profiling revealed increased levels of intermediate products of carbon metabolism, as well as anthocyanin and flavonoid derivatives in BnaC02.TPS8-overexpressing Arabidopsis plants under low N conditions. Furthermore, yeast two-hybrid (Y2H) and bimolecular fluorescence complementation (BiFC) analyses demonstrated that BnaC02.TPS8 interacts with both BnaC08.TPS9 and BnaA01.TPS10. These findings contribute to our understanding of how TPS8-mediated anthocyanin accumulation is modulated under low N and high sucrose conditions.

Biodegradable blends based on plasticized poly(lactic acid) PLA and thermoplastic starch (TPS) have been obtained. The influence of the PLA plasticizer as a compatibility agent has been studied by using two different plasticizers such as neat oligomeric lactic acid (OLA) and functionalized with maleic acid (mOLA). In particular, the morphological, thermal, and mechanical properties have been studied as well as the shape memory ability of the melt-processed materials. Therefore, the influence of the interaction between different plasticizers and the PLA matrix as well as the compatibility between the two polymeric phases on the thermally-activated shape memory properties have been studied. It is very interesting to use the same additive able to act as both plasticizer and compatibilizer, decreasing the glass transition temperature of PLA to a temperature close to the physiological one, obtaining a material suitable for potential biomedical applications. In particular, we obtain that OLA-plasticized blend (oPLA/TPS) show very good thermally-activated capability at 45 °C and 50% deformation, while the blend obtained by using maleic OLA (moPLA/TPS) did not show shape memory behavior at 45 °C and 50% deformation. This fact is due to their morphological changes and the loss of two well-distinguished phases, one acting as fixed phase and the other one acting as switching phase to typically obtain shape memory response. Therefore, the thermally-activated shape memory results show that it is very important to make a balance between plasticizer and compatibilizer, considering the need of two well-established phases to obtain shape memory response.
