RESUMO

Background: Frozen shoulder (FS) is a common disorder causing shoulder pain and limited motion. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is expected to help diagnose FS and realize the disease stage if stage-specific features are present. We aimed to survey stage-related MRI findings of FS in the literature. Methods: MEDLINE, SCOPUS, and Google Scholar databases were searched with search terms "frozen shoulder" or "adhesive capsulitis" combined with "magnetic resonance imaging." Studies that discussed MRI findings in relation to FS stages were retrieved. The course of FS was divided into stages 1 to 4 according to Hannafin and Chiaia. Results: Two of the noncontrast-enhanced MRI findings were stage-related. T2 signal hyperintensity of the joint capsule was more frequent in stages 1 and 2. The axillary capsule thickness was greater in stages 1 and 2. However, these findings were also seen in the later stages to a lesser degree. Effusion around the long head of biceps, subcoracoid fat obliteration, and coracohumeral ligament thickening were common in FS but their relation to the stages was not evident. Signal enhancement on contrast-enhanced MRI was not consistently linked to stages. Conclusion: T2 signal hyperintensity and axillary capsule thickening are characteristic of the early stages of FS, although MRI alone cannot completely define the disease stage.

RESUMO

Purpose: To report the retinal findings in a patient with autosomal recessive spastic ataxia of Charlevoix-Saguenay. Methods: A case was evaluated. Results: A 16-year-old male patient with a known diagnosis of autosomal recessive spastic ataxia of Charlevoix-Saguenay was referred for evaluation of retinal hypermyelination given its frequent association with the condition. The patient was asymptomatic with a best-corrected visual acuity of 20/20. Optical coherence tomography of the peripapillary retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) showed bilateral thickening in each eye (average thicknesses: 180 µm, right eye; 177 µm, left eye). An examination showed no myelinization of the RNFL. Conclusions: Most studies to date describe RNFL thickening secondary to hypermyelination as a characteristic finding in autosomal recessive spastic ataxia of Charlevoix-Saguenay. This case provides evidence that this thickening may be a result of hypertrophy rather than hypermyelination. Further investigation is needed to define the pathophysiologic cause of RNFL thickening in autosomal recessive spastic ataxia of Charlevoix-Saguenay.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Management of assisted ventilation and determining the optimal timing for discontinuation presents a significant clinical obstacle in patients affected by neuromuscular (NM) diseases. This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of ultrasound in appraising diaphragmatic function for predicting the necessity of intubation and determining the opportune moment to discontinue mechanical ventilation (MV) in patients with NM disorders. METHODS: The study was conducted in adult patients with NM diseases requiring inpatient care in the high-dependency neurology ward and the intensive care unit. Ultrasonographic assessment of diaphragmatic excursion (DE) and diaphragmatic thickness fraction (DTF) was conducted at the patient's bedside every 48 h for ventilated patients and every 72 h for nonventilated patients until they were weaned from the ventilator or discharged home. Qualitative data are expressed as percentages or numbers, and quantitative data are represented as mean ± standard deviation. Unpaired t-tests were employed to compare continuous variables, and χ2 tests were used for categorical variables. Contingency table analysis was used to compute relative risks in comparing the baseline DE and DTF with the sequential changes in these values. RESULTS: In cases in which the baseline left DE measured less than 1 cm, the relative risk for the requirement of ventilation was 2.5 times higher, with a confidence interval of 0.62-0.99 (P = 0.19). Notably, a bilateral reduction in DE within the initial 48 h of admission was identified as predictive of need for intubation. When comparing ventilated and nonventilated patients, it was observed that the mean DE values for the left and right sides in ventilated patients (0.74 and 0.79) were significantly lower than those in nonventilated patients (1.3 and 1.66), with corresponding P values of 0.05 and 0.01, respectively. Furthermore, a decline in right DE by more than 50% within 72 h of admission presented a relative risk of 3.3 for the necessity of ventilation, with a confidence interval of 1.29-8.59 (P = 0.01). Duration of ventilation ranged from 2 to 45 days, with an average of 13.14 days, whereas the mean ventilator-free days recorded was 13.57. Notably, a sequential increase in bilateral DE correlated with an extended duration of ventilator-free days. CONCLUSIONS: The presence of a baseline left DE of less than 1 cm, a consecutive decrease in DE measurements within 48 h, and a comparative reduction in right DE of more than 50% within the initial 3 days are indicators associated with the requirement for MV in patients with NM disease. Furthermore, the upward trajectory of DE in mechanically ventilated patients is linked to an increased number of days free from ventilator support, suggesting its potential to forecast earlier weaning.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: We aimed to evaluate the ability of the parasternal intercostal (PIC) thickening fraction during spontaneous breathing trial (SBT) to predict the need for reintubation within 48 h after extubation in surgical patients with sepsis. METHODS: This prospective observational study included adult patients with sepsis who were mechanically ventilated and indicated for SBT. Ultrasound measurements of the PIC thickening fraction and diaphragmatic excursion (DE) were recorded 15 min after the start of the SBT. After extubation, the patients were followed up for 48 h for the need for reintubation. The study outcomes were the ability of the PIC thickening fraction (primary outcome) and DE to predict reintubation within 48 h of extubation using area under receiver characteristic curve (AUC) analysis. The accuracy of the model including the findings of right PIC thickening fraction and right DE was also assessed using the current study cut-off values. Multivariate analysis was performed to identify independent risk factors for reintubation. RESULTS: We analyzed data from 49 patients who underwent successful SBT, and 10/49 (20%) required reintubation. The AUCs (95% confidence interval [CI]) for the ability of right and left side PIC thickening fraction to predict reintubation were 0.97 (0.88-1.00) and 0.96 (0.86-1.00), respectively; at a cutoff value of 6.5-8.3%, the PIC thickening fraction had a negative predictive value of 100%. The AUCs for the PIC thickening fraction and DE were comparable; and both measures were independent risk factors for reintubation. The AUC (95% CI) of the model including the right PIC thickening fraction > 6.5% and right DE ≤ 18 mm to predict reintubation was 0.99 (0.92-1.00), with a positive predictive value of 100% when both sonographic findings are positive and negative predictive value of 100% when both sonographic findings are negative. CONCLUSIONS: Among surgical patients with sepsis, PIC thickening fraction evaluated during the SBT is an independent risk factor for reintubation. The PIC thickening fraction has an excellent predictive value for reintubation. A PIC thickening fraction of ≤ 6.5-8.3% can exclude reintubation, with a negative predictive value of 100%. Furthermore, a combination of high PIC and low DE can also indicate a high risk of reintubation. However, larger studies that include different populations are required to replicate our findings and validate the cutoff values.

RESUMO

Atypical femoral fracture (AFF) is generally a rare complication of long-term use of bisphosphonate (BP); glucocorticoid (GC) use and Asian race are also risk factors. Femoral localized periosteal thickening (LPT, also termed "beaking") of the lateral cortex often precedes AFF. This cohort study investigated the incidence of LPT and AFF and their clinical courses over 10 yr in patients with autoimmune inflammatory rheumatic diseases (AIRDs) treated with BP and GC. The study population consisted of 121 patients with AIRDs taking BP and GC. LPT was screened by X-ray, and the LPT shape was evaluated. Prednisolone (PSL) dose was 10 (8-12) mg/d at enrollment and 9 (6-10) mg/d at the last observation. LPT was evident in 10 patients at enrollment and increased linearly to 31 patients (26%) at the last observation. AFF occurred in 9 femurs of 5 patients with LPT. All patients with AFF had bilateral LPT, and the prevalence of pointed type and LPT height were higher in the AFF-positive group than in the AFF-negative group. AFF occurred before BP discontinuation in 2 patients, 1 yr after BP discontinuation in 1, after BP discontinuation followed by 7 yr of alfacalcidol use in 1, and after switching from alfacalcidol to denosumab in 1. The prevalence rates of AFF and LPT associated with long-term BP use with concomitant use of GC (mostly PSL ≥ 6 mg/d) in Japanese patients with AIRD increased over time. The selection of long-term osteoporosis treatment for LPT-positive patients is difficult in some cases.

RESUMO

Transcatheter aortic valve (TAV) thrombosis may manifest as subclinical leaflet thrombosis (SLT) and clinical valve thrombosis. SLT is relatively common (10%-20%) after transcatheter aortic valve replacement, but clinical implications are uncertain. Clinical valve thrombosis is rare (1.2%) and associated with bioprosthetic valve failure, neurologic or thromboembolic events, heart failure, and death. Treatment for TAV thrombosis has been understudied. In principle, anticoagulation may prevent TAV thrombosis. Non-vitamin K oral anticoagulants, as compared to antiplatelet therapy, are associated with reduced incidence of SLT, although at the cost of higher bleeding and all-cause mortality risk. We present an overview of existing literature for management of TAV thrombosis and propose a rational treatment algorithm. Vitamin K antagonists or non-vitamin K oral anticoagulants are the cornerstone of antithrombotic treatment. In therapy-resistant or clinically unstable patients, ultraslow, low-dose infusion of thrombolytics seems effective and safe and may be preferred over redo-transcatheter aortic valve replacement or explant surgery.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: The primary objective of this study was to evaluate the impact of high-flow nasal cannula oxygen therapy [HFNC] on the diaphragm thickening fraction. DESIGN: Prospective, descriptive, cohort study SETTING: The study was conducted in the Physiology and Respiratory Care Laboratory, Intensive Care Unit, Hospital Británico de Buenos Aires. PARTICIPANTS: Thirteen healthy subjects >18 years old INTERVENTIONS: High-flow nasal cannula oxygen therapy MAIN VARIABLES OF INTEREST: Demographic data (age and gender), anthropometric data (weight, height, and body mass index), and clinical and respiratory variables (Diaphragm thickening fraction [DTf], esophageal pressure swing, respiratory rate [RR], esophageal pressure-time product per minute [PTPes/min]). RESULTS: Median DTf decreased significantly as flow increased (p < 0.05). The baseline DTf measurement was 21.4 %, 18.3 % with 20 L/m, and 16.4 % with 40 L/m. We also observed a significant decrease in RR as flow increased in HFNC (p < 0.05). In the 8 subjects with recordings, the PTPes/min was 81.3 (±30.8) cmH2O/sec/min and 64.4 (±25.3) cmH2O/sec/min at baseline and 40 L/m respectively (p = 0.044). CONCLUSIONS: The use of high-flow oxygen therapy through nasal cannula of HFNC in healthy subjects decreases the DTf and RR in association with increased flow. In addition, the use of 40 L/m flow may reduce the muscular work associated with respiration.

RESUMO

This is the case of a 66-year-old male with a medical history of HIV infection on combination antiretroviral therapy (cART) who presented to the hospital with gradually worsening chronic right-sided chest and abdominal pain over the past three months. Computed tomography (CT) with contrast showed new mass-like pleural thickening in the right lower lobe posteriorly with an associated small loculated right pleural effusion. A core needle pleural biopsy was performed, and the results were consistent with primary pleural malignant lymphoma. Histopathological and immunohistochemical examinations revealed CD10-positive, low-grade B-cell lymphoma. This case is considered a rare occurrence of primary malignant lymphoma developing in the pleura.

RESUMO

The aim of this study is to examine the frequency of maxillary sinus pathologies and their relationship with each other using cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) and to make a new grade according to the number of affected walls. 1000 maxillary sinuses of 500 patients with CBCT images were included in the study. Anatomical variations and pathological formations of the maxillary sinuses were examined. Images were evaluated for the presence of flat, polypoidal, partial and generalized mucosal thickening, partial and total opacification, polyps and mucous retention cysts. Maxillary sinus pathologies were graded according to the number of walls affected. In the examined CBCT images, no pathology was found in 54.2% of the maxillary sinuses, while pathology was observed in 45.8%. The most common sinus pathologies were mucous retention cyst (12.3%) and polypoidal thickening (12.2%). While pneumatization, ostium obstruction, and the presence of sinus-related roots were associated with sinus pathology, no relationship was found with nasal septum deviation and the presence of septa. Before dental implant and sinus surgery applications, the presence of sinus pathologies and their relationship with anatomical variations can be evaluated with CBCT, a three-dimensional technique, and complications such as sinus membrane perforation, infection, failure to break the bone window due to the presence of antral septa, graft loss and oroantral fistula formation can be reduced.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Dual-layer spectral-detector computed tomography (DLCT) may have the potential to evaluate gastric wall thickening. PURPOSE: To evaluate the efficacy of DLCT quantitative parameters in differentiating between benign and malignant thickening of the gastric wall. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A total of 58 patients with "gastric wall thickening" who underwent multi-phase abdominal enhanced DLCT scans were included in this study. Of these patients, 33 were malignant and 25 were benign. Parameters such as iodine concentration (IC), effective atomic number (Zeff), and attenuation of the lesions were measured during the arterial phase (AP) and venous phase (VP). Binary logistic regression was employed to calculate the combined prediction probabilities. The accuracy of the DLCT parameters was assessed using receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves. RESULTS: The values of IC, nIC, Zeff, normalized Zeff, and attenuation in the AP and VP were significantly higher (all P < 0.05) in the malignant group compared to the benign group. The ROC curves revealed that the IC, Zeff, and attenuation in the VP exhibited high diagnostic performance, with area under the ROC curve (AUC) values of 0.864, 0.862, and 0.840, respectively. The new combination of these three factors and gastric wall thickness had an AUC of 0.884, and the sensitivity and specificity were determined to be 81.8% and 92.0%, respectively. CONCLUSION: Spectral CT parameters, particularly the combination of gastric wall thickness, attenuation, IC, and Zeff in VP, have value in distinguishing between benign and malignant gastric wall thickening.

RESUMO

Issues of size and power consumption in IoT devices can be addressed through triboelectricity-driven energy harvesting technology, which generates electrical signals without external power sources or batteries. This technology significantly reduces the complexity of devices, enhances installation flexibility, and minimizes power consumption. By utilizing shear thickening fluid (STF), which exhibits variable viscosity upon external impact, the sensitivity of triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG)-based sensors can be adjusted. For this study, the highest electrical outputs of STF and sponge-hybrid TENG (SSH-TENG) devices under various input forces and frequencies were generated with an open-circuit voltage (VOC) of 98 V and a short-circuit current (ISC) of 4.5 µA. The maximum power density was confirmed to be 0.853 mW/m2 at a load resistance of 30 MΩ. Additionally, a lying state detection system for use in medical settings was implemented using SSH-TENG as a hybrid triboelectric motion sensor (HTMS). Each unit of a 3 × 2 HTMS array, connected to a half-wave rectifier and 1 MΩ parallel resistor, was interfaced with an MCU. Real-time detection of the patient's condition through the HTMS array could enable the early identification of hazardous situations and alerts. The proposed HTMS continuously monitors the patient's movements, promptly identifying areas prone to pressure ulcers, thus effectively contributing to pressure ulcer prevention.

RESUMO

Woody plants are encroaching across terrestrial ecosystems globally, and this has dramatic effects on how these systems function and the livelihoods of producers who rely on the land to support livestock production. Consequently, the removal of woody plants is promoted widely in the belief that it will reinstate former grasslands or open savanna. Despite this popular management approach to encroachment, we still have a relatively poor understanding of the effects of removal on society, and of alternative management practices that could balance the competing needs of pastoral production, biodiversity conservation and cultural values. This information is essential for maintaining both ecological and societal benefits in encroached systems under predicted future climate changes. In this review, we provide a comprehensive synthesis of the social-ecological perspectives of woody encroachment based on recent studies and global meta-analyses by assessing the ecological impacts of encroachment and its effects on sustainable development goals (SDGs) when woody plants are retained and when they are removed. We propose a working definition of woody encroachment based on species- and community-level characteristics; such a definition is needed to evaluate accurately the effects of encroachment. We show that encroachment is a natural process of succession rather than a sign of degradation, with encroachment resulting in an overall 8% increase in ecosystem multifunctionality. Removing woody plants can increase herbaceous plant richness, biomass and cover, but at the expense of biocrust cover. The effectiveness of woody plant removal depends on plant identity, and where, when and how they are removed. Under current management practices, either removal or retention of woody plants can induce trade-offs among ecosystem services, with no management practice maximising all SDGs [e.g. SDG2 (end hunger), SDG13 (climate change), SDG 15 (combat desertification)]. Given that encroachment of woody plants is likely to increase under future predicted hotter and drier climates, alternative management options such as carbon farming and ecotourism could be effective land uses for areas affected by encroachment.

RESUMO

Ipsilateral axillary adenopathy post-COVID mRNA vaccine has been widely reported and guidelines for management have been established. Isolated changes of axillary tail trabecular thickening without associated adenopathy in the breast present a diagnostic dilemma and no official guidelines have thus far been reported. This finding has been reported after COVID mRNA vaccine and has never been reported with any other vaccine. We report on a patient with such changes on screening mammography 1.5 months after the fifth dose of a COVID-mRNA vaccine and 1 week after RSV vaccine. This raises the possibility that such changes can be seen with vaccines other than the COVID mRNA series of vaccines. The main differential diagnosis includes mastitis and inflammatory breast cancer. The transient nature of this finding with spontaneous resolution at diagnostic mammography and the vaccination history helps to establish the diagnosis and exclude breast cancer.

RESUMO

The ideal texture of pureed diets to prevent aspiration pneumonia remains unclear. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of a pureed diet with either a gelling agent or a xanthan gum-based thickener to prevent pharyngeal residues in patients with dysphagia. We retrospectively analyzed a randomized, crossover trial of pureed rice with either a gelling agent or a xanthan gum-based thickener in patients with dysphagia. The enrolled patients were classified into mild and moderate-to-severe dysphagia groups. The primary outcome measure was degree of need for cyclic ingestion using test jelly for pharyngeal residuals (cyclic ingestion score). The secondary outcome was the patient's sense of material remaining in the throat following swallowing. Sixty-two patients (58% men; mean age 83 ± 9 years) with dysphagia were included. They were classified into mild dysphagia (n = 26) and moderate-to-severe dysphagia (n = 36) groups. In the moderate-to-severe dysphagia group, pharyngeal residuals were significantly less likely with pureed diets using a gelling agent than with those using a xanthan gum-based thickener, with respective median cyclic ingestion scores (range) of 1 (0-4) vs. 2.5 (0-4) (p = 0.001). There was no significant difference in pharyngeal residuals between the pureed diets in the mild dysphagia group. The multivariate analysis identified gelling agent as an important factor significantly associated with less pharyngeal residual after swallowing of pureed diet in patients with moderate-to-severe dysphagia. Pureed diets thickened by a gelling agent decrease pharyngeal residues in patients with moderate-to-severe dysphagia and may reduce risk of aspiration pneumonia.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Liquid modification is a widely established strategy of treatment for patients with dysphagia. The modification of liquid particularly by thickening or carbonation is a common approach to promote safe swallowing. OBJECTIVE: This study sought to investigate how carbonated and/or thickened water modulates swallowing behaviours during swallowing in healthy young individuals. METHODS: Thirty-one healthy volunteers (9 men, 22 women; mean age ± standard deviation [SD], 25.7 ± 6.2 years) were instructed to swallow 20 mL of water, carbonated water and carbonated juice with and without added thickening agent. Electromyograms (EMGs) of the suprahyoid (S-hyo) muscles were recorded to evaluate swallowing behaviours. Obtained S-hyo EMG bursts was analysed using the following outcome parameters: onset latency, the time between swallowing que to onset of EMG burst; rising time and falling time, defined as the time between onset and peak, and between peak and offset, respectively; duration, defined as the time between onset and offset of EMG burst; and area integral value under the waveform. RESULTS: Effects of thickening demonstrated the extended onset latency, EMG burst duration including falling time and the larger area of EMG in thickened liquid compared to thin liquid, but there was not much difference between thin and thickened carbonated liquids. Carbonation significantly decreased the duration including falling time for thickened but not for thin liquids. CONCLUSION: Patients with dysphagia can benefit from use of carbonated or thickened water while the effects on swallowing physiology may differ between carbonation and thickening.

RESUMO

Nearly one-third of patients who undergo surgical aortic valve replacement (SAVR) or transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) develop hypoattenuated leaflet thickening (HALT) within a year. HALT typically represents subclinical leaflet thrombosis in asymptomatic patients, and as a result it often is detected incidentally. However, HALT also may worsen in severity, resulting in leaflet immobility and/or valve deterioration. The clinical significance of HALT is a topic of ongoing debate, and currently there is no consensus on the screening and management of HALT in patients following TAVR or SAVR. This review provides a comprehensive evaluation of the available evidence on risk factors, preventative measures, treatment, and prognosis for this growing patient cohort.

RESUMO

Ribbing disease is a rare benign bone dysplasia characterized by progressive cortical thickening of the diaphyses of long bones in adult patients. The literature provides limited insight into its natural radiological progression and anatomical distribution. Single-bone involvement is particularly uncommon, with prior cases exclusively affecting the tibia. This case report outlines the unique presentation of Ribbing disease in a 20-year-old male, localized to the left femur. The patient's history revealed intermittent left thigh pain persisting for more than 2 years, with no identifiable triggers or relief factors. Early radiographic imaging revealed no significant abnormalities, but subsequent imaging, conducted 1 year after the initial presentation, revealed focal fusiform widening and cortical thickening of the mid-diaphysis of the left femur. MRI further revealed circumferential cortical thickening with bone marrow edema, corroborated by CT, which revealed cortical thickening with near-complete obliteration of the intramedullary cavity. The patient was managed with nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and activity modifications. Misinterpretation of the radiographic findings of the osteoid osteoma led the patient to undergo radiofrequency ablation. This case highlights the challenges in diagnosing Ribbing disease and emphasizes the importance of considering it in the differential diagnosis of chronic limb pain. Continued reporting of cases contributes to enhancing our understanding and management of this rare skeletal dysplasia.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Diagnosing infective endocarditis (IE) poses a significant challenge. This study aimed to compare the diagnostic accuracy of the 2015 and 2023 Duke clinical criteria introduced by the European Society of Cardiology (ESC) in a cohort of patients suspected of having IE. METHODS: Conducted retrospectively at two Swiss University Hospitals between 2014-2023, the study involved patients with suspected IE. Each hospitals' Endocarditis Team categorized case as either IE or not IE. The performance of each iteration of the Duke-ESC clinical criteria was assessed based on the agreement between definite IE and the diagnoses made by the Endocarditis Team. RESULTS: Among the 3127 episodes with suspected IE, 1177 (38%) were confirmed to have IE. Using the 2015 Duke-ESC clinical criteria, 707 (23%) episodes were deemed definite IE, with 696 (98%) receiving a final IE diagnosis. With the 2023 Duke-ESC clinical criteria, 855 (27%) episodes were classified as definite IE, of which 813 (95%) were confirmed as IE. The 2015 and 2023 Duke-ESC clinical criteria categorized 1039 (33%) and 1034 (33%) episodes, respectively, as possible IE. Sensitivity for the 2015 Duke-ESC and the 2023 Duke-ESC clinical criteria was calculated at 59% (95% CI: 56-62%), and 69% (66-72%), respectively, with specificity at 99% (99-100%), and 98% (97-98%), respectively. CONCLUSIONS: The 2023 ESC criteria demonstrated significant improvements in sensitivity compared to the 2015 version, although one-third of episodes were classified as possible IE by both versions.

RESUMO

To determine the genes associated with the fiber strength trait in cotton, three different cotton cultivars were selected: Sea Island cotton (Xinhai 32, with hyper-long fibers labeled as HL), and upland cotton (17-24, with long fibers labeled as L, and 62-33, with short fibers labeled as S). These cultivars were chosen to assess fiber samples with varying qualities. RNA-seq technology was used to analyze the expression profiles of cotton fibers at the secondary cell wall (SCW) thickening stage (20, 25, and 30 days post-anthesis (DPA)). The results showed that a large number of differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were obtained from the three assessed cotton cultivars at different stages of SCW development. For instance, at 20 DPA, Sea Island cotton (HL) had 6,215 and 5,364 DEGs compared to upland cotton 17-24 (L) and 62-33 (S), respectively. Meanwhile, there were 1,236 DEGs between two upland cotton cultivars, 17-24 (L) and 62-33 (S). Gene Ontology (GO) term enrichment identified 42 functions, including 20 biological processes, 11 cellular components, and 11 molecular functions. Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) enrichment analysis identified several pathways involved in SCW synthesis and thickening, such as glycolysis/gluconeogenesis, galactose metabolism, propanoate metabolism, biosynthesis of unsaturated fatty acids pathway, valine, leucine and isoleucine degradation, fatty acid elongation pathways, and plant hormone signal transduction. Through the identification of shared DEGs, 46 DEGs were found to exhibit considerable expressional differences at different fiber stages from the three cotton cultivars. These shared DEGs have functions including REDOX enzymes, binding proteins, hydrolases (such as GDSL thioesterase), transferases, metalloproteins (cytochromatin-like genes), kinases, carbohydrates, and transcription factors (MYB and WRKY). Therefore, RT-qPCR was performed to verify the expression levels of nine of the 46 identified DEGs, an approach which demonstrated the reliability of RNA-seq data. Our results provided valuable molecular resources for clarifying the cell biology of SCW biosynthesis during fiber development in cotton.
