Objectives: To identify and classify submucosal tumors by building and validating a radiomics model with gastrointestinal endoscopic ultrasonography (EUS) images. Methods: A total of 144 patients diagnosed with submucosal tumors through gastrointestinal EUS were collected between January 2019 and October 2020. There are 1952 radiomic features extracted from each patient's EUS images. The statistical test and the customized least absolute shrinkage and selection operator regression were used for feature selection. Subsequently, an extremely randomized trees algorithm was utilized to construct a robust radiomics classification model specifically tailored for gastrointestinal EUS images. The performance of the model was measured by evaluating the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve. Results: The radiomics model comprised 30 selected features that showed good discrimination performance in the validation cohorts. During validation, the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve was calculated as 0.9203 and the mean value after 10-fold cross-validation was 0.9260, indicating excellent stability and calibration. These results confirm the clinical utility of the model. Conclusions: Utilizing the dataset provided curated from gastrointestinal EUS examinations at our collaborating hospital, we have developed a well-performing radiomics model. It can be used for personalized and non-invasive prediction of the type of submucosal tumors, providing physicians with aid for early treatment and management of tumor progression.

Objective: This study aimed to investigate the usefulness of endoscopic ultrasound-guided tissue acquisition (EUS-TA) for diagnosing focal liver lesions in patients with a history of multiple primary malignant neoplasms. Methods: Among patients who underwent EUS-TA for focal liver lesions between 2016 and 2022, those with a history of multiple malignant neoplasms were included. A histologically confirmed malignant tumor within the past 5 years before EUS-TA was defined as a history of malignant neoplasm. The primary outcomes were diagnostic ability and adverse events of EUS-TA. Results: This study included 16 patients (median age, 73 [33-90] years), the median tumor size was 32 (6-51) mm, 14 had a history of double malignant neoplasms, whereas two had triple malignant neoplasms. Malignant neoplasms were detected histologically or cytologically in all cases. Immunohistochemistry was performed in 75% (12/16), and the final diagnosis of EUS-TA was metastatic liver tumor in 12 patients, and primary malignant liver tumor in four patients. The primary site could be identified in 11 of 12 metastatic tumor cases. The diagnostic yield of EUS-TA was 100% (16/16) for differentiating benign and malignant tumors and 94% (15/16) for confirming the histological type including the primary site of metastatic lesions. No adverse events were associated with the procedure. Conclusion: EUS-TA is a useful diagnostic modality for focal liver lesions in patients with a history of multiple malignant neoplasms, allowing for the differential diagnosis of primary and metastatic tumors and identification of the primary site of metastatic lesions.

La utilización de la terapia de ultrasonidos pulsados de baja intensidad para la cicatrización ósea y el tratamiento de fracturas es considerada cada vez más como una alternativa terapéutica de coste económico moderado y con efectos adversos nulos o mínimos (p. ej. leve reacción al gel conductor).Con todo, existe cierta controversia con relación a su evidencia científica. La presente revisión busca arrojar algo de luz sobre esta controversia y cubrir un espacio de estudio no ocupado por trabajos previos ni actuales sobre la terapia mediante ultrasonidos. Es necesario conocer el impacto real del tratamiento con ultrasonidos pulsados de baja intensidad en pacientes sometidos a osteotomía, así como su aplicabilidad como protocolo poscirugía para mejorar los procesos de recuperación, rehabilitación y, con ello, disminuir los tiempos de incapacidad. The use of low intensity pulsed ultrasound (LIPUS) therapy for bone healing and fracture treatment is increasingly considered as a therapeutic alternative with moderate economic cost and none or minimal adverse effects (e.g., low reaction to the conductive gel).However, there is some controversy regarding its scientific evidence. The present review seeks to shed some light on this controversy and to cover an area of study not occupied by previous or current work on ultrasound therapy. It is necessary to know the real impact of the treatment with low intensity pulsed ultrasound in patients with osteotomy, as well as its applicability as a post-surgery protocol to improve the recovery and rehabilitation processes and, at the end of the day, to reduce the time of disability. BACKGROUND: Point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) has become a mainstay in the evaluation of critically ill patients in the intensive care unit (ICU). ECMO patients are susceptible to complications during prolonged ICU stay, including cannula malposition, which has deleterious consequences. Although the literature surrounding utility of ultrasound on ECMO patients is expansive, direct comparison between radiographic imaging versus ultrasound for identification of cannula malposition is lacking. CASE PRESENTATION: The authors identified four patients with cannula malposition discovered through POCUS that was missed on routine radiographic imaging. Identification and correction of malposition changed their ECMO course. CONCLUSION: This case series is the first in literature demonstrating that ultrasound may be superior to radiographic images for ECMO cannula malposition. Further investigation into this subject is warranted.

BACKGROUND: Ultrasound has widely used in various medical fields related to critical care. While online and offline ultrasound trainings are faced by certain challenges, remote ultrasound based on the 5G cloud platform has been gradually adopted in many clinics. However, no study has used the 5G remote ultrasound cloud platform operating system for standardized critical care ultrasound training. This study aimed to evaluate the feasibility and effectiveness of 5G-based remote interactive ultrasound training for standardized diagnosis and treatment in critical care settings. METHODS: A 5G-based remote interactive ultrasound training system was constructed, and the course was piloted among critical care physicians. From July 2022 to July 2023, 90 critical care physicians from multiple off-site locations were enrolled and randomly divided into experimental and control groups. The 45 physicians in the experimental group were trained using the 5G-based remote interactive ultrasound training system, while the other 45 in the control group were taught using theoretical online videos. The theoretical and practical ultrasonic capabilities of both groups were evaluated before and after the training sessions, and their levels of satisfaction with the training were assessed as well. RESULTS: The total assessment scores for all of the physicians were markedly higher following the training (80.7 ± 11.9) compared to before (42.1 ± 13.4) by a statistically significant margin (P < 0.001). Before participating in the training, the experimental group scored 42.2 ± 12.5 in the critical care ultrasound competency, and the control group scored 41.9 ± 14.3-indicating no significant differences in their assessment scores (P = 0.907). After participating in the training, the experimental group's assessment scores were 88.4 ± 6.7, which were significantly higher than those of the control group (72.9 ± 10.8; P < 0.001). The satisfaction score of the experimental group was 42.6 ± 2.3, which was also significantly higher than that of the control group (34.7 ± 3.1, P < 0.001). CONCLUSION: The 5G-based remote interactive ultrasound training system was well-received and effective for critical care. These findings warrant its further promotion and application.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the variations in clinical effectiveness among patients diagnosed with knee osteoarthritis who underwent intra-articular administration of platelet-rich plasma using single, triple, or quintuple injections. METHODS: One hundred twenty patients with grade I-III knee osteoarthritis were randomly assigned to three groups: PRP1 group, who received a single injection of platelet-rich plasma; PRP3 group, who received three PRP injections one week apart; PRP5 group, who received five PRP injections one week apart. The patients' conditions were evaluated using the Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) and the Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Arthritis Index-VA3.1 version (WOMAC-VA3.1) at baseline and 6, 12, 24, and 52 weeks 52 weeks follow up. RESULTS: Out of the total participants, 106 patients (30 males and 76 females) completed the study. The primary outcome measure, WOMAC pain score, registered significant improvements across all groups when compared to pre-treatment levels. However, the application of 3 and 5 injections of platelet-rich plasma was substantially more effective than that of a single injection in reducing knee pain and stiffness, as well as enhancing physical function in patients with knee osteoarthritis. No statistically discernable difference was observed between PRP3 and PRP5 at all follow-up intervals, and there was no discernable difference between 3 and 5 PRP injections either. Mild side effects occurred in all three groups. CONCLUSIONS: The administration of three or five injections of platelet-rich plasma is safe, substantially more effective than single injections, and leads to remarkable clinical improvement by significantly reducing knee pain, improving joint stiffness, and enhancing physical function in patients with grade I-III knee osteoarthritis. Furthermore, no significant difference was observed in the efficacy of three or five injections. Therefore, we recommend using three injections of PRP in the treatment of patients with knee osteoarthritis of grade I-III.

BACKGROUND: The inability to extend the fingers at the metacarpophalangeal and interphalangeal joints leads to finger drop. While wrist drop and foot drop are well recognized, the causes of finger drop are poorly understood. AIMS: This study describes the clinical, electrodiagnostic (EDX), and ultrasound (US) features in patients with finger drop. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This is a retrospective study of 87 patients presenting with finger drop and referred for EDX studies during the past 10 years. We analyzed the clinical picture, EDX data, and US findings. The patients were categorized into global (all five digits) or partial (limited to 1-4 digits) finger drop. RESULTS: Fifty-six (64%) patients had global finger drop, while 31 (36%) had partial finger drop. The frequent cause of finger drop was Parsonage-Turner syndrome (PTS) (29 [33%]), followed by trauma (23 [26%]), cervical radiculopathy (16 [18%]), extensor tendon rupture (four [4%]), and compression/entrapment (two [2%]). In 13 (15%) patients, no cause was identified. A total of 13/16 (81%) patients with cervical radiculopathy and four of the patients with tendon rupture had partial finger drop, while 52/64 (81%) with posterior interosseous nerve (PIN) neuropathy had global finger drop. Of the 16 patients who experienced cervical radiculopathy as the cause of the finger drop, 15 patients had C7 and C8 radiculopathy and one patient had C7 radiculopathy. EDX studies of patients with PTS revealed partial axon loss in 18 (62%) patients, conduction block in eight (28%), and total axon loss in four (14%). Enlarged fascicles were observed by US in 40% of patients with PTS. EDX studies of patients who sustained iatrogenic nerve injury causing finger drop demonstrated total axon loss in six (46%) patients, partial axon loss in four (31%), demyelination in two (15%), and conduction block in two (15%). CONCLUSIONS: PIN neuropathy is the most common cause of finger drop, however, lesser-known causes such as cervical radiculopathy and extensor tendon rupture should also be considered. Global finger drop is suggestive of PIN neuropathy, while partial finger drop occurs more often in cervical radiculopathy and tendon rupture. EDX and US studies provide valuable information for localizing the lesion site and may reveal the cause of the finger drop.

Vascular tumors of the breast are rare, but benign hemangiomas are the most common type. Capillary hemangiomas are a subset of benign vascular tumors that involve smaller vessel sizes. They are difficult to diagnose with mammography and ultrasound, as they lack pathognomonic features and are frequently not seen. MRI is the most sensitive imaging tool. The lesions appear similar to angiosarcoma or ductal carcinoma in situ on imaging, which further complicates the diagnosis. A biopsy of the lesions is required for a definitive diagnosis. In this report, a 49-year-old female with newly diagnosed breast cancer is incidentally found to have a capillary hemangioma on staging breast MRI that was confirmed with a biopsy and excised along with the primary breast cancer with a partial mastectomy. The imaging findings of breast hemangioma on mammography, ultrasound, and MRI are also reviewed and described in this report.

Very preterm infants are at a high risk of developing feeding intolerance; however, there are no widely accepted definitions of feeding intolerance. This study aimed to develop a scoring system for feeding intolerance in very preterm infants by combining clinical symptoms and ultrasonography (US) findings. This prospective cohort study included very preterm and/or very low birth weight infants. We defined feeding intolerance as the inability to achieve full feeding (150 ml/kg/day) by 14 days of life. The clinical findings included vomiting, abdominal distention, and gastric fluid color. US findings included intestinal peristaltic frequency, gastric residual volume, peak systolic velocity, and the resistive index of the superior mesenteric artery. We conducted multivariate analyses to evaluate the potential predictors and developed a scoring system to predict feeding intolerance. A total of 156 infants fulfilled the eligibility criteria; however, 16 dropped out due to death. The proportion of patients with feeding intolerance was 60 (42.8%). Based on the predictive ability, predictors of feeding intolerance were determined using data from the US at 5-7 days of age. According to multivariate analysis, the final model consisted of 5 predictors: abdominal distention (score 1), hemorrhagic gastric fluid (score 2), intestinal peristaltic movement ≤18x/2 min (score 2), gastric fluid residue >25% (score 2), and resistive index >0.785 (score 2). A score equal to or above 5 indicated an increased risk of feeding intolerance with a positive predictive value of 84.4% (95% confidence interval:73.9-95.0) and a negative predictive value of 76.8% (95% confidence interval:68.4-85.3). The scoring system had good discrimination (area under the receiver operating characteristic curve:0.90) and calibration (p = 0.530) abilities. This study developed an objective, accurate, easy, and safe scoring system for predicting feeding intolerance based on clinical findings, 2D US, and color Doppler US.

Acute kidney injury (AKI) in patients with cirrhosis is a diagnostic challenge due to multiple and sometimes overlapping possible etiologies. Many times, diagnosis cannot be made based on case history, physical examination or laboratory data, especially when the nephrologist is faced with AKI with a hemodynamic basis, such as hepatorenal syndrome. In addition, the guidelines still include generalized recommendations regarding withdrawal of diuretics and plasma volume expansion with albumin for 48 h, which may be ineffective and counterproductive and may have iatrogenic effects, such as fluid overload and acute cardiogenic pulmonary edema. For this reason, the use of new tools, such as hemodynamic point-of-care ultrasound (PoCUS), allows us to phenotype volume status more accurately and ultimately guide medical treatment in a noninvasive, rapid and individualized manner.

The adductor magnus ischiocondylar origin (AM-IO) tendon has often been described as a third proximal hamstring tendon due to its common origin on the ischial tuberosity as well as similar function. Prior studies have described the magnetic resonance imaging characteristics of the AM-IO; however, its appearance on ultrasound has not been well-detailed. The purpose of our study is to describe the sonographic appearance of the AM-IO and provide a structured scanning protocol for complete evaluation of the tendon.

OBJECTIVE: The main purpose of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to investigate the diagnostic value of ultrasound elastography in the evaluation of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). METHODS: A comprehensive and methodical investigation was carried out in the databases of PubMed, EMBASE, Cochrane, Scopus, Web of Science, and China National Knowledge Infrastructure, covering the entire duration of these databases until October 18, 2023. The primary purpose of this research was to evaluate and contrast ovarian tissue elasticity in people with and without PCOS. The elasticity of ovarian tissue was quantified using standardized mean difference (SMD). RESULTS: A total of eight studies were ultimately selected for systematic evaluation and meta-analysis. Five studies used shear wave elastography (SWE) as a diagnostic tool, and it was discovered that women with PCOS had higher levels of ovarian shear wave elasticity than their healthy counterparts. The SMD was determined to be 1.86 kilopascal (95% CI: 1.27 to 2.44). Three studies were conducted using strain elastography (SE) to compare the ovarian strain ratio of patients with PCOS to that of a healthy control group. The SMD for the PCOS group was 2.07 (95% CI: 1.79 to 2.34), which indicated that the ovarian strain ratio was significantly higher in that group. CONCLUSION: This systematic review and meta-analysis found that women with PCOS had stiffer ovarian tissue than women without the disorder. Ultrasound elastography may provide clinicians with value beyond 2D ultrasound in the diagnosis of PCOS.

OBJECTIVE: To compare the effectiveness of positive pressure (PP) and negative pressure (NP) for reducing gas inclusions in biological tissues in preparation for acoustic imaging. METHODS: Eighteen pieces of porcine liver in degassed saline were included in this study. For the PP group (n = 9 samples), a wristwatch waterproof tester was used to pressurize samples to 0.41 MPa (59 psi) for 10 min. For the NP group (n = 9 samples), a desiccator at -0.08 MPa (-12 psi) was used for 30 min. Backscatter coefficients (BSCs) were calculated over the central frequency range of the backscattered spectra and paired-samples t-tests were performed. RESULTS: Utilization of PP resulted in a decrease in BSC for all samples, indicating less gas post-PP (pre-PP -13.0 ± 4.3 dB [mean ± SD], post-PP -18.9 ± 5.0 dB, p = .001). Utilization of NP resulted in an increase in BSC for the majority of samples (pre-NP -14.6 ± 6.0 dB, post-NP -13.1 ± 5.3 dB, p = .177). CONCLUSION: Utilization of a simple PP chamber consistently resulted in a decrease in tissue gas, at lower pressures than previously reported. The vacuum method is ineffective, may result in a paradoxical increase in tissue gas, and may not be recommended for tissue degassing.

In this 14th document in a series of papers entitled "Controversies in Endoscopic Ultrasound" we discuss various aspects of EUS-guided biliary drainage that are debated in the literature and in practice. Endoscopic retrograde cholangiography is still the reference technique for therapeutic biliary access, but EUS-guided techniques for biliary access and drainage have developed into safe and highly effective alternative options. However, EUS-guided biliary drainage techniques are technically demanding procedures for which few training models are currently available. Different access routes require modifications to the basic technique and specific instruments. In experienced hands, percutaneous transhepatic cholangiodrainage is also a good alternative. Therefore, in this paper, we compare arguments for different options of biliary drainage and different technical modifications.

BACKGROUND: The European Association of Endoscopic Surgery (EAES) recommends, with strong evidence, the use of indocyanine green (ICG) fluorescence imaging combined with intraoperative ultrasound (IOUS) to improve identification of superficial liver tumors. This study reports the use of ICG for the detection of colorectal liver metastases (CRLMs) during minimally invasive liver resection. METHODS: A single-center consecutive series of minimally invasive (laparoscopic and robotic) hepatic resections for CRLMs was prospectively evaluated (April 2019 and October 2023). RESULTS: A total of 25 patients were enrolled-11 undergoing laparoscopic and 14 undergoing robotic procedures. The median age was 65 (range 50-85) years. Fifty CRLMs were detected: twenty superficial, eight exophytic, seven shallow (<8 mm from the hepatic surface), and fifteen deep (>10 mm from the hepatic surface) lesions. The detection rates of CRLMs through preoperative imaging, laparoscopic ultrasound (LUS), ICG fluorescence, and combined modalities (ICG and LUS) were 88%, 90%, 68%, and 100%, respectively. ICG fluorescence staining allowed us to detect five small additional superficial lesions (not identified with other preoperative/intraoperative techniques). However, two lesions were false positive fluorescence accumulations. All rim fluorescence pattern lesions were CRLMs. ICG fluorescence was used as a real-time guide to assess surgical margins during parenchymal-sparing liver resections. All patients with integrity of the fluorescent rim around the CRLM displayed a radical resection during histopathological analysis. Four patients (8%) with a protruding rim or residual rim patterns had positive resection margins. CONCLUSIONS: ICG fluorescence imaging can be integrated with other conventional intraoperative imaging techniques to optimize intraoperative staging. Rim fluorescence proved to be a valid indicator of the resection margins: by removing the entire fluorescent area, a tumor-negative resection (R0) is achieved.

INTRODUCTION: Endoscopic ultrasound-guided fine-needle aspiration (EUS-FNA) and endoscopic ultrasound-guided fine-needle biopsy (EUS-FNB) are currently recommended for the pathologic diagnosis of pancreatic solid lesions (PSLs). The application of contrast-enhanced endoscopic ultrasound (ECEUS) could aid the endoscopist during an FNA and/or FNB procedure. CEUS is indeed able to better differentiate the pathologic tissue from the surrounding healthy pancreatic parenchyma and to detect necrotic areas and vessels. OBJECTIVES: Our objective was to evaluate if ECEUS could reduce the number of needle passes and side effects and increase the diagnostic efficacy of FNA and/or FNB. METHODS: A comprehensive literature search of clinical studies was performed to explore if ECEUS-FNA or FNB could increase diagnostic accuracy and reduce the number of needle passes and adverse effects compared to standard EUS-FNA or FNB. In accordance with the study protocol, a qualitative and quantitative analysis of the evidence was planned. RESULTS: The proportion of established diagnoses of ECEUS was 90.9% compared to 88.3% of EUS, with no statistically significant difference (p = 0.14). The diagnosis was made through a single step in 70.9% of ECEUS patients and in 65.3% of EUS patients, without statistical significance (p = 0.24). The incidence of adverse reactions was substantially comparable across both groups (p = 0.89). CONCLUSION: ECEUS-FNA and FNB do not appear superior to standard EUS-FNA and FNB for the diagnosis of pancreatic lesions.

Transcranial magneto-acoustic stimulation (TMAS), which is characterized by high spatiotemporal resolution and high penetrability, is a non-invasive neuromodulation technology based on the magnetic-acoustic coupling effect. To reveal the effects of TMAS treatment on amyloid-beta (Aß) plaque and synaptic plasticity in Alzheimer's disease, we conducted a comparative analysis of TMAS and transcranial ultrasound stimulation (TUS) based on acoustic effects in 5xFAD mice and BV2 microglia cells. We found that the TMAS-TUS treatment effectively reduced amyloid plaque loads and plaque-associated neurotoxicity. Additionally, TMAS-TUS treatment ameliorated impairments in long-term memory formation and long-term potentiation. Moreover, TMAS-TUS treatment stimulated microglial proliferation and migration while enhancing the phagocytosis and clearance of Aß. In 5xFAD mice with induced microglial exhaustion, TMAS-TUS treatment-mediated Aß plaque reduction, synaptic rehabilitation improvement, and the increase in phospho-AKT levels were diminished. Overall, our study highlights that stimulation of hippocampal microglia by TMAS treatment can induce anti-cognitive impairment effects via PI3K-AKT signaling, providing hope for the development of new strategies for an adjuvant therapy for Alzheimer's disease.

RESUMO

Portal venous gas on abdominal ultrasound classically represents an indirect indicator of bowel ischemia, a critical condition which poses a high patient mortality and therefore warrants emergent corrective action. While the classic appearance of portal venous gas on ultrasound is well-described in the literature, the characteristic descriptors are nonspecific and may actually represent other less emergent mimics. Therefore, while radiologists should remain vigilant for the detection of findings corresponding to portal venous gas, they should also be aware of similar-appearing entities in order to provide the most accurate diagnosis. This pictorial essay will open with imaging examples of true portal venous gas attributable to bowel ischemia and describe the classic features which should alert radiologists to this specific diagnosis. Subsequently, this pictorial essay will provide imaging examples of other various other clinical entities which on ultrasound may share similar imaging characteristics. An important objective of this pictorial essay is to highlight distinguishing imaging features along with specific clinical circumstances for each pathological entity which can direct radiologists into identifying the correct diagnosis.

This study evaluates the impact of high-intensity ultrasound (HIU) on the physicochemical properties and in-vitro digestibility of Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua). Various ultrasound durations (0-60 min) were applied to assess changes in color attributes, total antioxidant capacity (TAC), total flavonoid content (TFC), total phenolic content (TPC), total protein content, and in-vitro protein digestibility (IVPD). Results indicated HIU maximumly increased TAC, TFC, TPC, and peptide content before digestion by 7.28 % (US60), 3.00 % (US30), 32.43 % (US10), and 18.93 % (US60), respectively. While HIU reduced total protein content, it enhanced IVPD by up to 12.24 % (US30). Color attributes electron microscopy reflected structural changes in the cod samples, suggesting the effectiveness of HIU in altering protein structures. These findings highlight HIU's potential as a non-thermal technique for improving the sensory and nutritional quality of Atlantic cod, offering valuable insights for the seafood processing industry and consumers.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to quantify the accuracy of partial volume-corrected three-dimensional volume flow (3DVF) measurements as a function of spatial sampling beam density using carefully-designed parametric analyses in order to inform the target applications of 3DVF. METHODS: Experimental investigations employed a mechanically-swept curvilinear ultrasound array to acquire 3D color flow (6.3 MHz) images in flow phantoms consisting of four lumen diameters (6.35, 4.88, 3.18 and 1.65 mm) with volume flow rates of 440, 260, 110 and 30 mL/min, respectively. Partial volume-corrected three-dimensional volume flow (3DVF) measurements, based on the Gaussian surface integration principle, were computed at five regions of interest positioned between depths of 2 and 6 cm in 1 cm increments. At each depth, the color flow beam point spread function (PSF) was also determined, using in-phase/quadrature data, such that 3DVF bias could then be related to spatial sampling beam density. Corresponding simulations were performed for a laminar parabolic flow profile that was sampled using the experimentally-measured PSFs. Volume flow was computed for all combinations of lumen diameters and the PSFs at each depth. RESULTS: Accurate 3DVF measurements, i.e., bias less than ±20%, were achieved for spatial sampling beam densities where at least 6 elevational color flow beams could be positioned across the lumen. In these cases, greater than 8 lateral color flow beams were present. PSF measurements showed an average lateral-to-elevational beam width asymmetry of 1:2. Volume flow measurement bias increased as the color flow beam spatial sampling density within the lumen decreased. CONCLUSION: Applications of 3DVF, particularly those in the clinical domain, should focus on areas where a spatial sampling density of 6 × 6 (lateral x elevational) beams can be realized in order to minimize measurement bias. Matrix-based ultrasound arrays that possess symmetric PSFs may be advantageous to achieve adequate beam densities in smaller vessels.
