RESUMO

The role of Emergency Medical Services (EMS) is changing globally as ambulance crews respond to a shifting burden of disease as well as societal stressors such as violence and inequality. New ways of thinking about how to provide emergency care are required to shift EMS from a role primarily focused on clinical care and transporting patients to hospital. In this paper, we present the experience of the Philippi Project (PP), an innovative community-based model of care developed by front-line ambulance crews in a low-income neighborhood in Cape Town, South Africa. Our insights were developed through observational, interview and document review work, within an overall embedded research approach. Our analysis draws on the Everyday Health Systems Resilience framework, which sees resilience as an emergent process that may be stimulated through response to stress and shock. Responses take the form of absorptive, adaptive or transformative strategies and are underpinned by system capacities (cognitive, behavioral and contextual). We consider the PP as a potentially transformative resilience strategy, defined as a new way of working that offered the promise of long-term health system gains. We found that the PP's initial development was supported by a range of system capacity attributes (such as the intentional development of relationships, a sense of collective purpose, and creating spaces for constructive sensemaking). However, the PP was hard to sustain over time because emergent ways of working were undermined both by other capacity attributes rooted in pre-existing organizational routines, and two contextual shocks (Covid-19 and a violent incident). The paper adds a new empirical contribution to the still-small EHSR literature. In addition, the PP experience offers globally relevant lessons for developing community-based models of EMS care. It demonstrates that frontline staff can develop creative solutions to their stressful daily realities, but only if space is created and protected.

In this paper, we articulate a functional approach to cognitive capacities. It is a restricted functionalism for various reasons, but especially because it does not claim that all cognitive (and/or mental) entities and processes are functional in the sense of a systemic capacities approach. One of the central aims of a cognitive theory consists in providing explanations of behavioral phenomena of (human and non-human) animals, and of the phenomena that are involved in those explanations. We accept that part of what lies at the heart of these explanations are certain functional entities -we call them "cognitive functional systems" -which in our view stand for most of the cognitive capacities of an organism; that is, systems that are individuated primarily by the main cognitive functions they undertake. Additionally, in the paper, we go into further detail concerning these functional systems, their internal organization, the nature of their causal interactions, etc. We also argue that some of these classes of cognitive functional systems (i.e., cognitive capacities) can be construed as "natural kinds" whenever their kinds of functional organizations are understood as kinds of hierarchically ordered classes of information processing events that are related among each other in regular (often complex) ways.

Background: Gross motor coordination (GMC) plays a crucial factor in children's motor development and daily activities. It encompasses various sub-capacities, such as spatial orientation, rhythm, and motor reaction, collectively referred to as basic coordination capacities (BCC). However, children who are overweight and obese (OW/OB) often display poorer GMC. This study aims to examine the impact of gender and weight status (BMI categories) on children's GMC and BCC. It also seeks to investigate the impact of BCC and BMI on GMC. Method: The study involved 266 participants, 135 in the NW group (boys: n = 75; girls: n = 60) and 131 in the OW/OB group (boys: n = 68; girls: n = 63). An NW status is defined by a BMI z-score between ≥-2SD to ≤1SD, while an OW/OB status corresponds to a BMI z-score > 1SD. Physical activity was assessed using the Physical Activity Questionnaire for Children, developed by the University of Saskatchewan, Canada. We used six field tests to evaluate BCC, including single leg standing test (static balance), YBT (dynamic balance), rhythmic sprint test (rhythm), reaction time test (motor reaction), target standing broad test (kinesthetic differentiation), and numbered medicine ball running test (spatial orientation). GMC was evaluated with Kiphard-Schilling's Body Coordination Test (KTK). Result: The motor quotient (MQ) was primarily affected by weight status (F = 516.599, p < 0.001; gender: F = 6.694, p = 0.01), with no significant interaction effect (F = 0.062, p = 0.803). In BCC, gender had a significant main effect on rhythm capacity (F = 29.611, p < 0.001) and static balance (F = 11.257, p = 0.001) but did not significant influence other sub-capacities (p > 0.05). Weight status impacted dynamic balance (F = 11.164, p = 0.001). The interaction of gender and weight status significantly impacted motor reaction (F = 1.471, p = 0.024) and kinesthetic differentiation (F = 5.454, p = 0.02), but did not affect other sub-capacities (p > 0.05). The physical activity was not significant affected by gender (F = 0.099, p = 0.753), weight status (F = 0.171, p = 0.679) and the interactions of two variables (F = 0.06, p = 0.806). In the regression analysis, except motor reaction (p > 0.05), other BCC sub-capacities influenced GMC to varying extents (ß = -0.103-0.189, p < 0.05). Nonetheless, only two types of balance significantly mediated the relationship between BMI and GMC (BMI→MQ: ß = -0.543, p < 0.001; BMI→YBT: ß = -0.315, p < 0.001; BMI→SLS: ß = -0.282, p < 0.001; SLS→MQ: ß = 0.189, p < 0.001; YBT→MQ: ß = 0.182, p < 0.001). Conclusion: Compared to gender, the main effect of weight status on most GMC and BCC's sub-capacities was more pronounced. OW/OB children exhibited poorer GMC, which is related to their reduced static and dynamic balance due to excess weight. Kinesthetic differentiation, spatial orientation, and rhythm capacity are not significantly associated with BMI, but these sub-capacities positively influence gross motor coordination (GMC), except for hand-eye motor reaction.

Beyond the specific cognitive capacities like numerical or verbal intelligence and cognitive speed, the so-called soft skills, namely, psychological capacities, have become highly important in modern life. This is the first representative study on the distribution of work-relevant psychological capacities in the general population. We investigate capacities in different age groups, gender, and their relation with basic sociodemographics. A representative sample of 2531 people aged 14-95 years was investigated concerning work-relevant psychological capacities with the mini self-rating for psychological activities and participation (Mini-ICF-APP-S). The strongest capacities in young people were mobility, flexibility, proactivity, contact to thirds, and group interaction. Other capacities were stronger in midlife (30-59 years), such as adjustment to rules and routines, planning and structuring, decision making and judgement, application of competence and knowledge, assertiveness, dyadic relationships, endurance, and self-care. Women reported better dyadic relationship capacities, and men felt more assertive. The study provides, for the first time, representative data on a broad range of psychological capacities according to an internationally validated capacity concept. Good psychological capacities occur not primarily in youth, but especially in midlife and older age. Regarding demographic change, this implies older people are highly competent in the working world.

BACKGROUND: Applying whole-body electromyostimulation (wbEMS) to voluntary activation of the muscle is known to impact motor unit recruitment. Thus, wbEMS as an additional training stimulus enhances force-related capacities. This study aimed to evaluate the mono- and multiarticular strength adaptations to a running intervention with wbEMS compared to running without wbEMS. METHODS: In a randomized controlled trial (RCT), 59 healthy participants (32 female/ 27 male, 41 ± 7 years) with minor running experience conducted an eight-week running intervention (2x/ week à 20 min) with a wbEMS suit (EG) or without wbEMS (control group, CG). Maximal isokinetic knee extensor and flexor strength and jump height during countermovement jumps were recorded prior and after the intervention to assess maximal strength and power. RESULTS: Following eight weeks of running, maximal isokinetic knee extension torque decreased significantly over time for both interventions (EG Δ -4%, CG Δ -4%; F(1, 44.14) = 5.96, p = 0.02, η = 0.12). No changes were observed for flexion torque (F(1, 43.20) = 3.93, p = 0.05, η = 0.08) or jump height (F(1, 43.04) = 0.32, p = 0.57, η  = 0.01). CONCLUSIONS: The outcomes indicate that there is no additional effect over neuromuscular function adaptations with the inclusion of wbEMS during running training. Knee extensor strength is even slightly reduced which supports the principle of training specificity in regards to strength adaptation. We conclude that strength improvements cannot be achieved by running with wbEMS. TRIAL REGISTRATION: German Clinical Trials Register, ID DRKS00026827, date 10/26/21.

BACKGROUND: Wisdom is an important coping resource for difficult and ambiguous life situations. Wisdom trainings have been developed in clinical and non-clinical settings. What has been missing so far are representative data on wisdom affinity from the general population. These are important regarding needs assessments and identification of risk groups with low wisdom affinity and potential problems in coping with difficult and ambiguous life situations. METHOD: The study examined a population-representative sample of 2509 persons. Socio-demographic data, presence of chronic and mental illnesses was assessed, and wisdom attitudes by the 12-WD Wisdom Scale. The surveys were carried out by means of interviews and self-report questionnaires at the respondents' homes, done by an experienced social research company (USUMA GmbH). RESULTS: Only 6% of the whole sample appeared to be highly wisdom-affirmative (12-WD mean score 10 on scale 0-10), whereas 4% may appear low wisdom-affirm, due to very low agreement (12 WD mean score 0-4). Most of the moderately wisdom-affirm people had a religious denomination (70.9%), whereas only 57-59% of the high or low wisdom-affirm persons reported religious affiliations. Low wisdom-affirm were most often chronically ill (25%), with mental or physical illness in similar frequency, and had significantly more unemployment times than persons with higher wisdom scores. Wisdom affinity was independent from age, gender and age, household situation, and higher school education. CONCLUSION: It must be assumed that people with socio-medical risk factors also have impairments in their wisdom-related problem-solving strategies, and that these can be of interest for transdiagnostic wisdom trainings in prevention or rehabilitation, which has shown positive effects.

Several Allium cepa L. varieties, representing a versatile set of vegetables widely utilized by consumers, are appreciated for their bioactive properties, including antimicrobial, anticarcinogenic, and antioxidant capacities. The aim of this study is to compare the morphometric characteristics and biochemical profiles of four cultivars of A. cepa, two of them represented by the perennial Sicilian landrace "Cipudda agghiarola" (Allium × proliferum (Moench) Schrader), widely known as the Egyptian walking onion (WO), and by the landrace "Cipudduzza" belonging to the variety known as aggregatum (ON), which were compared with two commercial cultivars of A. cepa var. cepa (onion), Stoccarda (OS) and Rossa Carmen (OR). The experimental trial was conducted in Catania (Sicily), following organic growing practices. The randomized complete block experimental design was adopted with one experimental factor, the genotype (GE) effect. The harvested plants were characterized for their main morphometric parameters, according to the International Plant Genetic Resources (IGPR) descriptors. The biochemical activity was assessed by analyzing the total phenolic content (TPC) and the total flavonoid content (TFC). The antioxidant capacity was determined by 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging, ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP), and oxygen radical absorbance capacity (ORAC). The sugar profile (total sugars, sucrose, glucose, fructose, and fructooligosaccharides-FOS) and the volatile compounds by headspace-gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (HS-GC/MS) were also determined. The OR bulb exhibited the highest TPC (16.3 mg GAE/g d.w., p < 0.01) and TFC (8.5 mg QE/g d.w., p < 0.01), with the highest antioxidant capacity measured by the FRAP (27.1 µmol TE/g d.w., p < 0.01) and DPPH assays (46.2 µmol TE/g d.w., p < 0.01). The ON bulb showed the highest ORAC value (209 µmol TE/g d.w., p < 0.01). Generally, the bulbs were richer in sugars (584 mg/g d.w., p < 0.01) than the leaf blade (239 mg/g d.w., p < 0.01), except for OR. Significant interaction between the genotype and plant organ was noted in the volatile compound profiles (p < 0.05) except for total ketones and carboxylic acids, where higher content was observed in the leaf blade compared to the bulb, regardless of the genotype. These findings highlight WO's potential for use in ready-to-eat products, enhancing its market value.

In the last decade, no other branch of clinical pharmacology has been subject to as much criticism of failed innovation and unsatisfactory effectiveness as psychopharmacology. Evolutionary psychiatry can offer original insights on the problems that complicate pharmacological research. Considering that invalid phenotyping is a major obstacle to drug development, an evolutionary perspective suggests targeting clinical phenotypes related to evolved behavior systems because they are more likely to map onto the underlying biology than constructs based on predetermined diagnostic criteria. Because of their emphasis on symptom remission, pharmacological studies of psychiatric populations rarely include functional capacities as the primary outcome measure and neglect the impact of social context on the effects of psychiatric drugs. Evolutionary psychiatry explains why it is appropriate to replace symptoms with functional capacities as the primary target of psychiatric therapies and why social context should be a major focus of studies assessing the effectiveness of drugs currently used and new drugs under development. When the focus of research shifts to those questions that go beyond the "disease-based" concept of drug action, evolutionary psychiatry clearly emerges as a reference framework to assess drug effectiveness and to optimize clinicians' decisions about prescribing, deprescribing, and non-prescribing.

RESUMO

Fred Pine is a major contributor to contemporary Freudian analytic work. He expanded the breadth of clinical psychoanalysis by showing how the analyst could integrate ever expanding perspectives in analysis, and he expanded its depth through greater insight into how development affects psychic structure and, thereby, the context within which unconscious conflict and compromise is experienced and processed. Both of these-his expansion of potential variables implicated in the process of dynamic conflict and his developmental focus on structural deficit-have led to a way of Freudian thinking that is highly assimilative and integrative. Pine's focus on integrating disparate points of view-not different theories, but clinical observations that are featured in different overall theories-illuminates clinical possibility and nuance. Pine's work leads to questions about the relation of psychoanalytic theory to analytic practice and the definition of contemporary Freudian psychoanalysis itself.

This study aimed to evaluate the effects of dietary supplementation with different types of Saccharomyces cerevisiae fermentation products (SCFP) on lactational performance, metabolism, acute phase protein response, and antioxidant capacities in dairy cows from -21 to 56 d in milk (DIM). One hundred and 80 multiparous Holstein dairy cows were blocked by parity, expected calving date, pre-trial body condition score, and previous 305-d ME yield, and then randomly assigned to 1 of 3 dietary treatments: basal diet (CON; n = 60), basal diet supplemented with 40 g/d of SCFP1 (XPC; n = 60; XPC, Diamond V, Cedar Rapids, IA), and basal diet supplemented with 19 g/d of SCFP2 (NTK; n = 60, NutriTek®, Diamond V, Cedar Rapids, IA). Blood (n = 15, 13 and 12 in the CON, XPC and NTK groups, respectively) was sampled at -7 ± 3, + 3, + 7, + 21, and + 28 d, and milk samples (n = 19, 18 and 15 in the CON, XPC and NTK groups, respectively) was sampled during 1-8 wk from a subset of cows from -21 to 56 d relative to calving. Data were analyzed using the MIXED procedure in SAS (SAS Institute Inc.). All data were subjected to repeated measures ANOVA. Dietary treatment (TRT), time, and their interaction (TRT × time) were considered as fixed effects and cow as the random effect. Cows fed XPC and NTK had greater energy-corrected milk (ECM). Supplementing NTK increased milk fat content and yield, and 3.5% fat-corrected milk (FCM) yield compared with CON. Milk urea nitrogen (MUN) was lower in XPC cows than CON. SCFP supplementation decreased plasma ß-hydroxybutyrate (BHB), ceruloplasmin (CER), haptoglobin (HPT), and interleukin-1ß (IL-1ß) concentrations, whereas increased plasma phosphorus (P) concentrations. In addition, cows fed NTK showed lower creatinine (CR) and cortisol (COR) concentrations but increased plasma calcium (Ca) and myeloperoxidase (MPO) concentrations than those in the CON cows. In addition, cows fed NTK and XPC both had reduced plasma concentrations of serum amyloid-A (SAA) at 3 DIM of lactation compared with CON fed cows. Furthermore, SCFP cows had greater concentrations of plasma glucose (GLU) and calcium (Ca) than CON cows at 7 DIM, and greater concentrations of plasma phosphorus (P) at 21 DIM. Between different SCFP type fed groups, plasma concentrations of nonesterified fatty acids (NEFA), MDA, creatinine (CR), SAA, and HPT were lower in cows fed NTK compared with cows fed XPC at 7 DIM. Overall, our results indicate the potential benefits of supplementing SCFP in transition dairy cows by modulating immunity, liver metabolic function and supporting ECM yield. The results also suggest that NutriTek at 19 g/d appears to support the performance and health of dairy cows better compared with XPC at 40 g/d, based on improved metabolic and inflammatory status during the transition period.

Snake gourd is a seasonal vegetable with a high water content and medicinal value, but the short harvest period limits the large-scale application of snake gourd. Therefore, the effects of freeze-thaw pretreatment (FT) combined with hot air (HD) on the drying characteristics, active ingredients and bioactivities of snake gourd were investigated. The results showed that FT pretreatment reduced browning and shortened the drying time by 44%; the Page model was the best fit for describing the drying process. The polysaccharide contents (21.70% in alcoholic extract (TG1) and 44.34% in water extract (TG2)) and total phenol contents (1.81% in TG1 and 0.88% in TG2) of snake gourd pretreated by FT-HD were higher than those of snake gourd pretreated by the corresponding HD treatment. The FT pretreatment decreased the molecular weight of snake gourd polysaccharides and increased the molar ratio of glucose. The extracts pretreated by FT-HD showed greater chemical, cellular antioxidant capacity and α-amylase and α-glucosidase inhibition than those pretreated by HD. FT-HD can be recommended for achieving a short drying time and high quality of snake gourd and can be used for the drying of other fruits and vegetables.

PURPOSE: Individuals with constitutional thinness have been presented with a lower muscular energy metabolism at the cellular level but their effective aerobic capacities and exercise-related energy efficiency remains unexplored. The present study compares maximal and sub-maximal aerobic capacities between subjects with constitutional thinness and age-matched normal-weight ones. METHODS: Anthropometric measures, body composition (Dual-X-ray absorptiometry), physical activity and sedentary time (GT3x actigraphs), and maximal aerobic capacities (cycling V ˙ O 2peak test) were assessed in 18 constitutionally thin (CT-body mass index < 17.5 kg m-2) and 17 normal-weight (NW-body mass index between 20 and 25 kg m-2) women. Energy efficiency was assessed during a submaximal cycling test and a walking exercise. RESULTS: CT had a lower body mass and body mass index compared to NW. Absolute peak oxygen uptake and maximal aerobic power were lower in CT subjects compared to NW (ES: - 1.63 [- 2.40; - 0.86] and - 1.32 [- 2.05; - 0.58], p < 0.001). V ˙ O 2peak related to body mass was not different between groups. Gross and net efficiency (ES: - 0.78 [- 1.48; - 0.06], p = 0.03 and ES: - 0.73 [- 1.43; - 0.01], p = 0.05) were lower in CT compared to NW during the submaximal cycling exercise. The gross energy cost of walking related to body mass was lower in subjects with CT (ES: - 1.80 [- 2.60; - 0.97, p = 0.05), with no difference for the net one. Perceived exertion was similar between groups in responses to both submaximal exercises. CONCLUSION: Constitutionally thin women do not show impaired aerobic capacities at moderate to maximal intensities despite lower energy efficiency while cycling and walking at low-to-moderate intensities.

The growing interest in fermented dairy products is due to their health-promoting properties. The use of milk kefir grains as a starter culture made it possible to obtain a product with a better nutritional and biological profile depending on the type of milk. Cow, buffalo, camel, donkey, goat, and sheep milk kefirs were prepared, and the changes in sugar, protein, and phenol content, fatty acid composition, including conjugated linoleic acids (CLAs), as well as antioxidant activity, determined by ABTS and FRAP assays, were evaluated and compared. The protein content of cow, buffalo, donkey, and sheep milk increased after 24 h of fermentation. The fatty acid profile showed a better concentration of saturated and unsaturated lipids in all fermented milks, except buffalo milk. The highest content of beneficial fatty acids, such as oleic, linoleic, and C18:2 conjugated linoleic acid, was found in the cow and sheep samples. All samples showed a better antioxidant capacity, goat milk having the highest value, with no correlation to the total phenolic content, which was highest in the buffalo sample (260.40 ± 5.50 µg GAE/mL). These findings suggested that microorganisms living symbiotically in kefir grains utilize nutrients from different types of milk with varying efficiency.

Employees with mental illness are often the first to be unable to cope with increasingly complex psychosocial work demands. But people without mental illness can also suffer from, for example, high workload. This study compares a short coaching to stabilize work ability for employees with and without mental illness regarding coaching topics, effects on work-related resources, goal attainment, and unwanted events. Individual coaching of three sessions (problem exploration by behavior analysis, practice of new behavior, reflection) was conducted with employees from different professional fields. A medical history was taken to determine whether participants are affected by a mental disorder. All coaching was conducted by the same behavior therapist in training (L.P.W.) under the supervision of an experienced behavior therapist (B.M.). Two hundred and three coachings with three sessions were completed. In total, 103 participants did not have a mental illness (51%), and 100 participants reported a mental disorder (49%). The coaching participants with mental illness had lower initial levels of work-related capacities (more severe impairments) and coping behavior as compared to the participants without mental illness. In the pre-post comparisons, both groups achieved significant improvements in work-related coping after the coaching. There were no differences in goal attainment between both groups. While participants without mental illness reported more unwanted events in parallel to the coaching (30% reported negative developments in life), participants with mental illness reported coaching-related unwanted events (20% felt to be dependent on the coach). Coaching with an individual focus on one topic can improve work-related resources in participants with and without mental disorders. In this work, the selenylation Codonopsis pilosula polysaccharide (Se-CPPS) were synthesized using an optimized microwave-assisted method. Then, physicochemical properties, including molecular weight, particle size, valence state of selenium, antioxidant capacity, release mechanism of selenium under gastrointestinal conditions, as well as their effects on HT-29 cell viability were comprehensively investigated. The results demonstrated that Se-CPPS with the highest selenium content (21.71 mg/g) was synthesized using 0.8% nitric acid concentration under microwave conditions of 90 min at 70 °C. FTIR and XPS analysis revealed that Se was bound to the polysaccharide chain in the form of O-Se-O and O-H···Se, with a valence state of either 0 or +4. In vitro investigations on antioxidant activity and selenium release capacity indicated that selenization not only enhanced the antioxidant activity of CPPS but also endowed Se-CPPS with robust selenium release capability in simulated gastric digestion. The effects of Se-CPPS on HT-29 cells was further investigated by CCK-8 method. The results showed that the selenide modification effectively reduced the toxicity of Na2SeO3 and enhanced the viability of CPPS. The findings of this study offer valuable methodological guidance for the synthesis of Se-polysaccharides with superior functional properties.

Due to the production of a large amount of biochar, highly photoactive biochar-derived dissolved organic matter (BDOM) from different sources is released into surface water. This study investigated the molecular composition of BDOM (sludge, bamboo and stalk BDOM) using Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FT-ICR MS) and used tetracycline (TC) as model pollutant to investigate the relationship between molecular composition and BDOM photoactivity, specifically focusing on reactive oxygen species (ROS) production. The results indicate that the fluorescence signal intensity of humic acid-like and aromatic proteins in the plant-derived BDOM are significantly higher than that derived from sewage sludge. FT-ICR MS results also showed that plant-derived BDOM contained more CHO molecular formula. Photodegradation experiments of TC mediated by various BDOM analogues demonstrated the photoactivity is highly correlated with the components and functional groups. The electrochemical experiments and density functional theory (DFT) calculations further verified that the aromatic moiety, sulfydryl group and amino group of BDOM affected the electronic supply and energy transfer. Higher electron and energy transfer favor the reaction of BDOM with the ground state oxygen to generate ROS, thus promoting photodegradation of TC. This study provides a new basis for better assessing the ecological risks of BDOM.

We investigated Cissus quadrangularis L. powder (C) use as a natural additive to Tteokgalbi, a traditional Korean meat-based dish. Five distinct Tteokgalbi samples were treated: one without any additives (negative control, NC), one with 1.00% C (C1), 2.00% C (C2), 4.00% C (C3), and 0.10% ascorbic acid (positive control, PC). C addition resulted in changes in composition, quality, and sensory attributes. Moisture content decreased with higher C levels; crude protein varied among the groups, with C1 having the highest crude protein levels and C3 the lowest. Crude fat decreased with increasing C concentration, whereas the carbohydrate content increased. The water-holding capacity notably decreased in the C3 group, resulting in increased cooking loss with higher C concentrations. C treatment altered color and texture, reducing CIE L* and increasing CIE a* before cooking and increasing CIE L* and CIE a* after cooking. CIE b* decreased before cooking but increased thereafter. C-treated Tteokgalbi was less cohesive, chewy, and brittle compared to the NC. The C treatment increased the total phenolic and flavonoid contents and enhanced radical scavenging capacities. It also affects storage characteristics, lowers pH, and increases 2-thiobarbituric acid reactive substances values. The microbial counts were lower in C2 and C3 after 11 days. These findings suggest the potential use of C as a natural meat additive.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the impacts of different drying technologies including microwave drying (MD), vacuum microwave drying (VMD), sun drying (SD), vacuum drying (VD), hot air drying (HAD), and vacuum freeze drying (VFD) on the physical characteristics, nutritional properties and antioxidant capacities of kiwifruit pomace in order to realize by-product utilization and improve energy efficiency. Results showed that both MD and VMD significantly reduced drying time by >94.6%, compared to traditional thermal drying which took 14-48 h. MD exhibited the highest content of soluble dietary fiber (9.5%) and the lowest energy consumption. Furthermore, VMD resulted in the highest content of vitamin C (198.78 mg/100 g) and reducing sugar (73.78%), and the antioxidant capacities ranked only second to VFD. Given the financial advantages and product quality, VMD was suggested to be advantageous technology in actual industrial production.

Understanding the extent to which genetics × environment plays a role in shaping individual strategies to environmental challenges is of considerable interest for future selection of more resilient animals. Accordingly, the objective of this study was to evaluate the metabolic responses to a nutritional challenge of goats divergently selected for functional longevity based on plasma metabolites and the repeatability of these responses across 2 experimental farms and years. We carried out 6 different experimental trials from years 2018 to 2022 (4 trials on site Bourges (2018-21) and 2 trials (2021-22) on site Grignon) in which 267 first kidding goats, daughters of Alpine bucks divergently selected for functional longevity, longevity plus (n = 137), and longevity minus (n = 130), were exposed to a 2-d nutritional challenge in early lactation. The experiments consisted of a 5 or 7-d control period (pre-challenge) on a standard lactation diet followed by a 2-d nutritional challenge with straw-only feeding and then a 7 or 10-d recovery period on a standard lactation diet, for site Bourges and Grignon, respectively. During the challenge plasma metabolite composition was recorded daily. Linear mixed-effects models were used to analyze all traits, considering the individual as a random effect and the 2x2 treatments (i.e., genetic line and year nested in site) and litter size as fixed effects. The linear mixed-effects model using a piecewise arrangement was used to analyze the response/recovery profiles to the nutritional challenge. Random parameters estimated for each individual, using the mixed-effects models without the fixed effects of genetic line, were used in a Sparse Partial Least Square Discriminant Analysis (sPLS-DA) to compare the goat metabolism response to the challenge on a multivariate scale. The plasma metabolites, glucose, ß-hydroxybutyrate (BHB), and nonesterified fatty acids (NEFA), and urea concentrations responded to the 2-d nutritional challenge. Selection for functional longevity did not affect plasma glucose, NEFA, BHB, and urea response/recoveries to a 2-d nutritional challenge. However, site, trial, and litter size affected these responses. Moreover, the plasma metabolites seem not to fully recover to prechallenge levels after the recovery phase. The sPLS-DA analysis did not discriminate between the 2 longevity lines. We observed meaningful between-individuals' variability in plasma BHB, especially on the prechallenge and rate of response and rate of recovery from the 2-d nutritional challenge (CV = 26.2%, 36.1%, and 41.2%, repeatability = 0.749, 0.322, and 0.741, respectively). Plasma NEFA recovery from challenge also demonstrated high between-individuals' variability (CV = 16.4%, repeatability = 0.323). Selection for functional longevity did not affect plasma metabolites responses to a 2-d nutritional challenge in dairy goats. Plasma NEFA and BHB response/recovery presented high between-individuals' variability, indicating individual adaptative characteristics to nutritional challenges not related to the environmental conditions but to inherent individual characteristics.

Breath-hold diving is explained as an activity that requires enduring muscle asphyxia and acidosis, high anaerobic capacity, and the tactic of the dive. Therefore, this study aimed to construct and validate tests that will mimic anaerobic processes in the specific media of freedivers. The sample of participants included 34 Croatian freedivers (average age: 26.85 ± 4.0 years, competitive age: 3.82 ± 1.92 years, their body height: 180.14 ± 8.93 cm, and their body mass: 76.82 ± 12.41 kg). The sample of variables consists of anthropometric indices, competitive efficiency (maximal length of a dive (DYN)), and specific anaerobic capacities (100 m and 2 min tests). Newly developed tests included the swimming anaerobic sprint test (SAST) and diving anaerobic sprint test (DAST). DAST and SAST variables included the total time of the test (DAST/SAST) and the fastest interval (DASTmax/SASTmax). The results showed good reliability of the tests with high Cronbach alpha coefficients (DAST: 0.98, DASTmax: 0.97, SAST: 0.99, SASTmax: 0.91). Furthermore, pragmatic validity shows a high correlation among all variables and DAST (DYN: -0.70, 100 m: 0.66, 2 min: -0.68). High relation is also found between 100 m (0.96), 2 min (-0.94), and a moderate result for DYN (-0.43) and the SAST test. A factor analysis extracted one significant factor. The factor analysis involved DAST, SAST, DYN, 100 m, and 2 min tests regarding factor 1. After the examination of all variables, the total time of the DAST test showed the best predictive values for the performance of divers. However, both tests could be used for diagnostics and the evaluation of specific condition abilities in freediving.
