OBJECTIVES: This in vitro study compared the accuracy of conventional versus digital impression techniques for angulated and straight implants using two different impression coping and scan body designs. METHODS: Two implant systems were used: Straumann and Dentegris. Two implants were placed for each system, straight and angulated at 15 degrees mesiodistally. Conventional impressions were made using the splinted open-tray technique using narrow impression coping (NIC) and wide impression coping (WIC). The stone casts produced from the conventional impression were digitized with a lab scanner (3Shape D2000). Digital impressions were made using four intraoral scanners (IOS): 3Shape Trios 3, Medit i700, Cerec Omnicam, and Emerald Planmeca using short scanbodies (SSB) and long scanbodies (LSB). The scanning was repeated ten times to generate the Standard Tessellation Language (STL) files. The distance and angle deviations between impression copings and scanbodies were measured in reference to the master model. RESULTS: The trueness and precision of SSB and WIC were significantly better than LSB and NIC (p<0.001). The range trueness of the platform deviation was better with SSB (37.1 to 51.9) than LSB (89.6 to 127.9 µm) and for WIC than NIC in conventional impressions (58.2 and 75.1 µm, respectively). The trueness of the angle deviation of digital scans with SSB (0.11 to 0.25 degrees) was significantly better than scans with LSB (0.31 to 0.57 degrees) and for WIC than NIC (0.21 and 0.52 degrees, respectively). The precision of the platform deviation of digital scans with SSB (12.4 to 34.5 µm) was higher than other scans and conventional impressions (42.9 to 71.4 µm). The precision of the angle deviation of Medit i700 and Trios 3 with SSB (0.17 and 0.20 degrees, respectively) was higher than other scans with SSB and conventional impressions (0.54 to 1.63 degrees). CONCLUSIONS: Digital scans with SSB were more accurate than conventional splinted open-tray impressions. The type of impression coping and scanbody significantly affected the impression accuracy. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: The use of a short scanbody can increase the accuracy of digital impressions, and wide impression coping can increase the accuracy of conventional impressions, resulting in improved clinical outcomes.

Aim: The integration of advanced technologies, including three-dimensional (3D) imaging modalities and virtual simulations, has significantly influenced contemporary approaches to preoperative planning in implant dentistry. Through a meticulous analysis of relevant studies, this review synthesizes findings related to accuracy outcomes in implant placement facilitated by 3D imaging in virtual patients. Methods: A comprehensive literature search was conducted across relevant databases to identify relevant studies published to date. The inclusion criteria were studies utilizing 3D imaging techniques, virtual patients, and those focusing on the accuracy of dental implant planning and surgical placement. The selected studies were critically appraised for their methodological quality. Results: After a rigorous analysis, 21 relevant articles were included out of 3021 articles. This study demonstrates the versatility and applicability of these technologies in both in vitro and in vivo settings. Integrating Computer-Aided Design/Computer-Aided Manufacturing (CAD/CAM), cone bean computed tomography (CBCT), and advanced 3D reconstruction methodologies showcases a trend toward enhanced precision in implant planning and placement. Notably, the evaluation parameters varied, encompassing distances, discrepancies, and deviations in the implant placement. The ongoing integration of systems such as dynamic navigation systems, augmented reality, and sophisticated software platforms shows a promising trajectory for the continued refinement of virtual reality applications in dental implantology, providing valuable insights for future research and clinical implementation. Moreover, using stereolithographic surgical guides, virtual planning with CBCT data, and 3D-printed templates consistently demonstrates enhanced precision in dental implant placement compared to traditional methods. Conclusion: The synthesis of the available evidence underscores the substantial positive impact of 3D imaging techniques and virtual patients on dental implant planning and surgical placement accuracy. Utilizing these technologies contributes to a more personalized and precise approach that enhances overall treatment outcomes. Future research directions and potential refinements to the application of these technologies in clinical practice should be discussed.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to assess the alteration in keratinized mucosa (KM) dimensions in the early healing period after implant placement, and the influence of variables obtained during implant surgery on KM alteration. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Study participants were consecutively recruited from patients who had received implants following a non-submerged surgical protocol. The implant had to be installed in the extraction socket that had healed for more than 6 months without any soft or hard tissue augmentation. Keratinized mucosa width (KMW), keratinized mucosa thickness (KMT), soft tissue level (STL), and probing pocket depth (PPD) were measured at implant placement and 3 and 6 months after implant surgery. The influence of variables obtained during implant surgery on the 6-month KMW alteration was assessed. RESULTS: A total of 66 implants in 55 patients who completed the follow-up examination after 6 months were included in this study. KMW, KMT, and STL significantly decreased at 3- and 6-months examination by 0.7-1.2 mm. KMW was reduced by 24.6%. Mesial PPD significantly increased between the 3- and 6-months follow-up. In the multivariate generalized estimating estimations analysis, the implant diameter negatively influenced the 6-month KMW alteration, but the KMW at implant surgery positively influenced the 6-month KMW alteration. CONCLUSIONS: The KMW decreased significantly at 3 and 6 months after implant placement. If the initial KMW was wider, the KMW was reduced more at 6 months after implant placement. Therefore, it is important to carefully monitor KMW alterations during the early healing period to ensure optimal esthetics and peri-implant tissue health.

BACKGROUND: Immediate implant placement has gained popularity due to its several advantages. However, immediate placement has its challenges, including concerns about primary stability and bone formation around the implant. The aim of the present study is to evaluate the clinical outcomes of tapered, sand-blasted, and acid-etched internal submerged dental implants in various regions of the jaw bones and to provide a positional rationale for immediate implant placement. METHODS: Between 2009 and 2018, a single surgeon at Seoul National University Dental Hospital in Seoul, Korea, immediately inserted 49 dental implants with tapered bone-level design after extraction, in a total of 34 patients. The clinical outcomes were collected and evaluated, focusing on location of implant placement and marginal bone loss (MBL), with consideration of other parameters such as implant diameter and length. RESULTS: Of 49 immediately installed Luna® (Shinhung Co., Seoul, Korea) dental implants, 23 were placed in the mandible, and 26 were set in the maxilla. The mean age of patients at the time of installation was 65.91 years, ranging from 40 to 86 years. The average follow-up period was 7.43 years, with a range of 5 to 14 years. After a 5-year retrospective evaluation of tapered, sand-blasted, and acid-etched internal submerged dental implants for immediate implant placement, the cumulative survival rate was 93.88%, with 100% survival rate in the mandible and premolar region of both the maxilla and mandible. CONCLUSIONS: After a 5-year evaluation, tapered, sand-blasted, and acid-etched internal submerged dental implants demonstrated good efficacy for immediate placement in various locations within the dental arches, exhibiting effective clinical performance.

BACKGROUND: Computer-guided implant surgery has improved the quality of implant treatment by facilitating the placement of implants in a more accurate manner. This study aimed to assess the accuracy of implant placement in a clinical setting using three techniques: dynamic navigation, static surgical guides, and freehand placement. We also investigated potential factors influencing accuracy to provide a comprehensive evaluation of each technique's advantages and disadvantages. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Ninety-four implants in 65 patients were included in this prospective study. Patients were randomly assigned to one of three groups: dynamic navigation, static surgical guides, or freehand placement. Implants were placed using a prosthetically oriented digital implant planning approach, and postoperative CBCT scans were superimposed on preoperative plans to measure accuracy. Seven deviation values were calculated, including angular, platform, and apical deviations. Demographic and consistency analyses were performed, along with one-way ANOVA and post-hoc tests for deviation values. RESULTS: The mean global platform, global apical, and angular deviations were 0.99 mm (SD 0.52), 1.14 mm (SD 0.56), and 3.66° (SD 1.64°) for the dynamic navigation group; 0.92 mm (SD 0.36), 1.06 mm (SD 0.47), and 2.52° (SD 1.18°) for the surgical guide group; and 1.36 mm (SD 0.62), 1.73 mm (SD 0.66), and 5.82° (SD 2.79°) for the freehand group. Both the dynamic navigation and surgical guide groups exhibited statistically significant differences in all values except depth deviations compared to the freehand group (p < 0.05), whereas only the angular deviation showed a significant difference between the dynamic navigation and surgical guide groups (p = 0.002). CONCLUSION: Our findings highlight the superior accuracy and consistency of dynamic navigation and static surgical guides compared to freehand placement in implant surgery. Dynamic navigation offers precision and flexibility. However, it comes with cost and convenience considerations. Future research should focus on improving its practicality. TRIAL REGISTRATION: This study was retrospectively registered at the Thai Clinical Trials Register-Medical Research Foundation of Thailand (MRF) with the TCTR identification number TCTR20230804001 on 04/08/2023. It was also conducted in accordance with the Declaration of Helsinki and approved by the institutional ethics committee at the Xian Jiaotong University Hospital of Stomatology, Xian, China (xjkqII[2021] No: 043). Written informed consent was obtained from all participants.

The distribution of stress on short platform switched dental implants is of interest. Hence, the mandibular posterior molar area was modelled using a three-dimensional finite element method (FEM) with a continuous 1.5 mm cortical bone thickness and an inner cancellous bone core. The implants used in the study were 5 mm long, 4.5 mm wide and 3.5 mm wide at the abutments. 120 N of force was applied in both the vertical and oblique (20° and 35°) directions to create a realistic simulation. ANSYS Workbench was generated for each model. Von Mises stress was assessed in the cortical and cancellous bones at varying depths. Ten noded tetrahedron elements with three degrees of freedom per node were employed to interpret translations on the x, y, and z axes. The stress-based biomechanical behaviour of platform switched short osseo-integrated implants varied across all 5 positions in FEM simulations, based on the depth of implant placement, the direction of applied force, and the shape of the bone. Data shows that opposite forces to the vertical forces caused more damage. Thus, the implantation of subcrestal implants resulted in reduced stress on the cortical and cancellous bone.

BACKGROUND: Fibula free flap reconstruction has revolutionized maxillofacial reconstruction. While immediate dental rehabilitation with dental implants and teeth has shown benefits, it remains uncommon, especially for patients with malignancy. METHODS: A retrospective cohort study at a single institution explored immediate dental rehabilitation in fibula flaps for patients with malignant disease. Thirteen patients with malignancies that underwent immediate fibula free flap reconstruction with dental implants and dental prosthesis were included with a minimum of 3-month follow-up. RESULTS: Forty eight implants replaced 90 teeth in 13 patients. All implants were integrated at 3 months, with an overall success rate of 87.5%. Two patients experienced delayed (>3 months postoperatively) implant loss due to osteoradionecrosis and infection. Peri-mucositis occurred in three patients which resolved with treatment. Skin paddles were used in 11 patients and radiation therapy was not delayed for any patient. CONCLUSION: With proper patient selection, diagnosis of malignancy and the need for osteocutaneous flap reconstruction does not exclude the ability to place immediate implants and deliver an immediate dental prosthesis in head and neck reconstruction.

Background: This in vivo study evaluated the effect of graphene oxide and graphite coatings, coupled with the micro-arc oxidation (MAO) surface roughening technique, known for their mechanical strength, chemical stability, and antibacterial properties. The main objective was to assess the degree of improvement in osseointegration of titanium implants resulting from these interventions. Materials and methods: In this study, 32 female rats were utilized and randomly allocated into four groups (n = 8 each): machined surface titanium implants (control), those roughened by the MAO method, those coated with graphene oxide-doped MAO, and those with a graphite-doped MAO coating. Titanium implants were surgically placed in the right tibia of the rats. Rats undergoing no additional procedures during the 4-week experimental period were sacrificed at the end. Then, the implants and surrounding bone tissues were separated and embedded in acrylic blocks for reverse torque analysis. Using a digital torque device, the rotational force was applied to all samples using a hex driver and racquet until implant separation from the bone occurred, with the corresponding values recorded on the digital display. Then, statistical analysis was performed to analyze the data. Results: No statistically significant difference between the groups was observed in the biomechanical bone-implant connection levels (N/cm) (P = 0.268). Post-hoc tests were not required because no discernible differences were identified between the groups. Conclusion: Within the scope of this study, implants treated with the MAO method, along with those coated with graphene oxide- and graphite-doped MAO method, did not exhibit significant superiority in terms of osseointegration compared to machined surface titanium implants.

Lasers are employed in all fields of modern dentistry nowadays, including both surgical and non-surgical dental procedures. Prosthodontics, a branch of dentistry, has also embraced lasers as an invaluable addition to conventional methodologies. This helps improve the standard of care for patients and dentists due to its precise excision, quick healing, and enhanced tissue response after surgeries. In prosthodontics, the most commonly used lasers are carbon dioxide, argon, and yttrium-aluminum-garnet (YAG) lasers. Many reviews have been published in the literature regarding the use of lasers in dentistry; however, reviews on the use of lasers in the field of prosthodontics are limited. This review aims to explain the diverse applications and advancements of lasers in prosthodontics. Furthermore, it will highlight the integration of lasers in diagnostic protocols, treatment modalities, and the fabrication of prosthetic restorations.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study is to investigate the association of peri-implantitis (PI) and sinus membrane thickening and to assess the resolution of membrane thickening following intervention (implant removal or peri-implantitis treatment) aimed at arresting PI. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Forty-five patients with 61 implants in the posterior maxillary region were retrospectively included in the study. Twenty-four patients were diagnosed with peri-implantitis (PI) and 21 had peri-implant health (PH). Cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) scans were evaluated to assess maxillary sinus characteristics, including membrane thickening, sinus occupancy and ostium patency. The CBCT scans taken 6 months after intervention aimed at arresting disease (implant removal or treatment of PI) in the PI group were also appraised and compared to baseline scans. RESULTS: At baseline, all parameters evaluating membrane thickness disorders yielded significant differences between groups (p < .001). Patients with posterior maxillary implants diagnosed with PI were 7× more likely to present membrane thickening compatible with pathology when compared to patients with healthy implants (OR = 7.14; p = .005). Furthermore, the likelihood was 6x greater in implants diagnosed with PI to exhibit moderate membrane thickening (OR = 6.75, p = .001). The patients receiving interventions aimed at arresting PI experienced significant enhancement in all radiographic parameters related to the sinus cavity at the 6-month follow-up (p < .001), though these variations were similarly independent of whether treatment consisted of PI treatment or implant removal. CONCLUSIONS: Maxillary sinus membrane thickening and the permeability/obstruction of the ostium are frequently associated with the presence of PI in posterior implants. Interventions targeting disease resolution effectively reduce membrane thickness to levels compatible with maxillary sinus health.

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to analyze the global scholarly production of articles related to temporary anchorage devices (TADs) from 1998-2023 in peer-reviewed dental journals indexed in the Web of Science. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A database of TADs-related articles was created via a Web of Sciences structured search. The bibliometric characteristics of the studies, including the number of citations, publication year, journal title, journal impact factor (IF), authorship, contributing institutions and countries, thematic field, and study design, were extracted. Keyword co-occurrence network analyses and the correlation between the number of citations and the article age, journal IF, and journal quartile of each article were performed. RESULTS: The top 50 cited articles were published from 1999-2016, and the total number of citations ranged from 82-602, with 160.36 citations/paper on average. Most of the articles originated from Japan (n = 12), with the most remarkable contributions from Nihon and Okayama Universities, Japan (n = 5, each). The American Journal of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics had the most cited articles, with 196.57 citations/paper on average. A significant positive correlation occurred between the number of citations and publication age (rho = 0.392, P = 0.005). CONCLUSION: Our scientometric analysis reported the characteristics of TADs-related articles published over 25 years. Most highly-cited articles were published between 2005 and 2008. The positive correlation between articles' publication date and the number of citations might impact the top 50 within the next 5-10 years.

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to investigate the association between peri-implant diseases and systemic inflammation assessed by serum C-reactive protein (CRP) levels in a sample of patients with hypertension. METHODS: A total of 151 participants with hypertension were included in a cross-sectional study. The population was divided into six groups according to their peri-implant and periodontal status (healthy controls, mucositis, peri-implantitis, periodontitis, periodontitis and mucositis, periodontitis, and peri-implantitis). Linear, logistic regression, and correlation analyses were performed. RESULTS: CRP levels were statistically significantly higher in participants with periodontitis alone (median 3.2 mg/L, interquartile range [IQR] 1.8, p = 0.012), combined with mucositis (3.10 mg/L, IQR 2.35, p < 0.001) or peri-implantitis (2.7 mg/L, IQR 2.53, p = 0.002) when compared to the healthy controls (1 mg/L, IQR 1.2). This association was independent of age, sex, smoking status, and adiposity differences. Participants with periodontitis with and without peri-implant diseases had the greatest odds of exhibiting CRP > 3 mg/L (odds ratio = 7.3, 95% confidence interval 1.6-33.9). CONCLUSIONS: Peri-implant diseases are associated with systemic inflammation, but the nature of the association should be further investigated.

BACKGROUND: The aim of this retrospective study was to investigate the risk of tooth loss for teeth adjacent and nonadjacent to dental implants. METHODS: A total of 787 patients with an average follow-up of 57.1 months were examined to define the tooth loss, cumulative survival rate, and odds ratio (OR) for teeth adjacent versus nonadjacent to implants. A multivariate logistic regression was employed to assess the association between dental history and various recorded etiologies of tooth loss among teeth adjacent to implants. RESULTS: The incidence of tooth loss for teeth adjacent to implants was 8.1% at the tooth level and 15.1% at the patient level, while 0.7% and 9.5% at the tooth and patientlevel for teeth nonadjacent to implants. The 10-year cumulative survival rate for teeth adjacent to implants was 89.2%, and the primary etiology of tooth loss was root fracture (45.2%). The risk of tooth loss among teeth adjacent versus nonadjacent to implants was significantly higher (OR 13.15). Among teeth adjacent to implants, root canal-treated teeth had a significantly higher risk of tooth loss due to root fracture (OR 7.72), a history of existing restoration significantly increased the risk of tooth loss due to caries (OR 3.05), and a history of periodontitis significantly increased the risk of tooth loss due to periodontitis (OR 38.24). CONCLUSION: The present study demonstrated that after patients received dental implant treatment, teeth adjacent to implants showed a 13.2-fold higher risk of tooth loss compared to teeth nonadjacent to implants, with the primary etiology being root fracture.

INTRODUCTION: Dental implants are widely employed as dependable replacements for lost teeth. However, it is crucial to establish, solely through prospective cohort studies, whether a history of periodontitis indeed constitutes a significant risk factor for implant failure. METHODS: A systematic literature search was conducted in October 2022 in several electronic databases with subsequent manual updates. Only original prospective cohort studies evaluating the implant (loss) rate ≥1 year after implant loading were included. Logarithmic risk ratio and weighted mean differences were calculated. Study results were summarized using random effects meta-analyses evaluated by trial sequential analyses. The Newcastle-Ottawa scale evaluated study bias and the GRADE approach assessed the certainty/quality of the evidence. RESULTS: A total of 14 publications reporting on 12 prospective cohort studies were included. Low evidence certainty/quality evidence due to the absence of randomized clinical trials revealed significantly greater odds of failure in patients with a history of periodontitis at follow-ups both after ≤5 years (OR = 1.65; 95% CI: 1.12-2.44; p = 0.012) and >5 years (OR = 2.36; 95% CI: 1.13-4.95; p = 0.023). The incidence of peri-implantitis (OR = 5.93; 95% CI: 2.75-12.8; p < 0.001) and the weighted mean (WM) of marginal bone loss (WM difference = 0.75 mm; 95% CI: 0.18-1 0.3; p < 0.05) were statistically significantly greater in the periodontally compromised group, whereas there was no significant difference between the two groups for peri-implant probing depth. CONCLUSION: A history of periodontitis can be considered a significant risk factor for incident implant failure, peri-implantitis, and greater marginal bone loss.

AIM: This retrospective cohort study aimed to volumetrically investigate the bone stability rate of prefabricated allogeneic bone blocks (PBB) and computer-aided design (CAD)/computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) custom-milled allogeneic bone blocks (CCBB) for ridge augmentation. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Nineteen patients were treated with 20 allografts: 11 CCBB, 9 PBB; 10 in the maxilla and 10 in the mandible. Clinical treatment history and cone beam computed tomography scans before surgery (t0), directly after graft surgery (t1) and after 6 months of healing prior to implant insertion (t2) were evaluated using a three-dimensional evaluation software for absolute bone volume, stability as well as vertical and horizontal bone gain. Furthermore, the inserted implants were analysed for survival, marginal bone loss (MBL) and complications for a mean follow-up period of 43.75 (±33.94) months. RESULTS: A mean absolute volume of 2228.1 mm3 (±1205) was grafted at t1. The bone stability rate was 87.6% (±9.9) for CCBB and 83.0% (±14.5) for PBB. The stability was higher in the maxilla (91.6%) than in the mandible (79.53%). Surgery time of PBB was longer than for CCBB (mean Δ = 52 min). The survival rate of the inserted implants was 100% with a mean MBL of 0.41 mm (±0.37). CONCLUSION: The clinical performance of both allograft block designs was equally satisfactory for vertical and horizontal bone grafting prior to implant placement. OBJECTIVE: To segment dental implants on PA radiographs using a Deep Learning (DL) algorithm. To compare the performance of the algorithm relative to ground truth determined by the human annotator. Methodology: Three hundred PA radiographs were retrieved from the radiographic database and consequently annotated to label implants as well as teeth on the LabelMe annotation software. The dataset was augmented to increase the number of images in the training data and a total of 1294 images were used to train, validate and test the DL algorithm. An untrained U-net was downloaded and trained on the annotated dataset to allow detection of implants using polygons on PA radiographs. RESULTS: A total of one hundred and thirty unseen images were run through the trained U-net to determine its ability to segment implants on PA radiographs. The performance metrics are as follows: accuracy of 93.8%, precision of 90%, recall of 83%, F-1 score of 86%, Intersection over Union of 86.4% and loss = 21%. CONCLUSIONS: The trained DL algorithm segmented implants on PA radiographs with high performance similar to that of the humans who labelled the images forming the ground truth.

RESUMO

The aim of this in vitro study is to compare the performance of digital and conventional methods in the manufacture of single copings in terms of the internal and marginal fit. Twenty-four prefabricated titanium Cone Morse Exact abutments of the lateral anatomical type were used to manufacture 24 lithium disilicate copings in the CAD-CAM Ceramill (n = 12) and heat-press (n = 12) systems. The copings were cemented using a self-adhesive resin cement (RelyX U-200; 3M ESPE) and then cut vertically. The cement line was photographed using an optical microscope at ×100 and ×200 magnification and then the internal and marginal regions were measured. The mean values of fits, for the CAD-CAM and heat-press techniques, respectively, were (µm): angular regions, 81.8 and 75.3; linear regions, 63.1 and 60.1; incisal regions, 171.1 and 114.7; marginal discrepancy, 74.1 and 75.2; and absolute marginal discrepancy, 99.5 and 96.2. MANOVA test showed that there is an effect of the techniques on the regions (p < .05). The effects of laboratories and the interaction between laboratories and techniques on the regions were not statistically significant (p > .05). The techniques evaluated presented clinically acceptable results for the marginal fit. However, the conventional method performed better for the internal fit. RESEARCH HIGHLIGHTS: Scientific evidence regarding the methods of making prosthesis can help the dental professional in decision-making. Digital and conventional methods is both good in the manufacture of single copings in terms of the internal and marginal fit.

PURPOSE: The objective of the present systematic review and meta-analysis was to assess randomised controlled trials (RCTs) which assessed the efficacy of mini dental implants (MDIs) and standard-diameter implants (SDIs) in retaining mandibular overdentures (MO). MATERIALS AND METHODS: The focused question was "Is there a difference in the mechanical stability between MDIs and SDIs in retaining MO?" Indexed databases were searched up to and including November 2023 using different keywords. Boolean operators were used during the search. The literature was searched in accordance with the PRISMA guidelines. The PICO characteristics were: patients (P) = individuals with complete mandibular dentures requiring dental implants; Intervention (I) = placement of MDIs under mandibular dentures; Control (C) = placement of SDIs under mandibular dentures; Outcome (O) = comparison of stability between MDIs and SDIs in supporting mandibular dentures. Only RCTs were included. Risk of bias (RoB) was assessed using the Cochrane RoB tool. RESULTS: Five RCTs were included. The numbers of participants ranged between 45 and 120 edentulous individuals wearing complete mandibular dentures. The mean age of patients ranged between 59.5 ± 8.5 and 68.3 ± 8.5 years. The number of MDIs and SDIs ranged between 22 and 152 and 10 and 80 implants, respectively. The follow-up duration ranged between one week and 12 months. Three RCTs reported an improvement in the quality of life (QoL) of all patients after stabilisation of mandibular dentures using MDIs or SDIs. In one RCT, peri-implant soft tissue profiles were comparable between MDIs and SDIs at the 1-year follow-up. The implant survival rate was reported in two RCTs, which were from 89% to 98% and 99% to 100% for MDIs and SDIs, respectively. All RCTs had a low RoB. CONCLUSION: Mini dental implants represent a viable alternative to traditional standard-diameter implants when seeking optimal retention for mandibular overdentures.

Objectives: The surgical guide is a static computer-assisted device used for implant surgery planning and guidance. By taking an impression and referring to the patients' three-dimensional computed tomography scan of the desired implant site, a surgical guide can be created. During surgery, the surgical guide aids in achieving the designed implant placement position and direction. We examined and evaluated the long-term clinical outcomes of implant surgery using surgical guides. Materials and Methods: This study investigated a total of 15 patients with 32 implants that were placed using surgical guides from 2009 to 2011 with a mean follow-up period extended beyond 10 years. Patient demographics and implant survival rates were recorded. We analyzed marginal bone loss (MBL) by assessing the radiographs acquired at installation, three months after installation, and one month, one, two, and five years after prosthesis delivery. Results: The mean patient age was 57.33 years at implant placement. Of the 32 implants, five implants were placed in the anterior region and 27 implants were in the posterior region. Six implants failed and three of them were replaced, resulting in an 81.25% survival rate. The mean follow-up period was 10 years and nine months. Mean MBL compared to post-installation was significantly higher than at three months after installation, and one month, one, two, and five years after prosthesis delivery. Mean MBL at three months after installation, and one month, one year, and two years were significantly higher compared to the previous visit (P<0.05). However, MBL at five years after prosthesis delivery did not differ significantly compared to at two years. Conclusion: In this study, implant rehabilitation assisted by surgical guides exhibited favorable survival rates. With the limitation of the sample amount in this study, further research and more samples are required to evaluate the long-term clinical effectiveness of surgical guides.

INTRODUCTION: Since its establishment in 1999, the journal of Clinical Implant Dentistry and Related Research (CIDRR) has consistently disseminated notable clinical and translational research within the domain of oral implantology. As the journal approaches its milestone 25th anniversary, this study endeavors to systematically delineate the publication trends, level of evidence, and bibliometric indices characterizing the initial quarter-century of CIDRR's scholarly activity. Notably, the investigation adopts a contemporary methodology by incorporating Altmetric analysis, thereby enriching the evaluation with an assessment of the broader societal and online impact of the published research. METHODS: A comprehensive search was performed in SCOPUS and PubMed to access the bibliographic data of all articles published in the journal from 1999 to 2024. Additionally, Altmetric database was used to obtain social media attention scores (AAS). Journal's overall performance via impact factor and quartile range was assessed. Most cited papers were identified and the most prolific authors, institutions and countries and the collaboration networks among those were assessed. The level of evidence of all articles was determined based on Oxford level of evidence scale. All articles were categorized based on their major topic in the field of implant dentistry. RESULTS: Throughout its first 25 years of activity, CIDRR published 1912 articles with an annual growth rate of 2.67% and consistently being ranked at Q1 quartile in "Dentistry (miscellaneous)" and "Oral Surgery" journal categories. When clinical studies are considered, level I and II evidence constituted 22.82% and 11.82% of all articles, respectively. Sweden, the USA, and Italy as well as Göteborgs Universitet, Sahlgrenska Akademin. and Malmö Högskola were the most prolific countries and institutions respectively. "Implant system/design/characteristics," "Bone Augmentation," and "Implant Prosthesis" were the top most investigated topics. CONCLUSIONS: The examination of the journal's initial 25 years highlighted that CIDRR has surpassed similar dental research journals in publishing a greater number of high-level evidence articles. It also showcased diverse country- and author-collaboration networks. However, the journal's social media presence is still evolving. This article, presenting a comprehensive overview of the journal's scientometric and bibliographic activities, serves as a valuable reference for researchers, clinicians, and stakeholders, offering insights into both traditional and contemporary perspectives.
