RESUMO

In this study, we investigate the application of generative models to assist artificial agents, such as delivery drones or service robots, in visualising unfamiliar destinations solely based on textual descriptions. We explore the use of generative models, such as Stable Diffusion, and embedding representations, such as CLIP and VisualBERT, to compare generated images obtained from textual descriptions of target scenes with images of those scenes. Our research encompasses three key strategies: image generation, text generation, and text enhancement, the latter involving tools such as ChatGPT to create concise textual descriptions for evaluation. The findings of this study contribute to an understanding of the impact of combining generative tools with multi-modal embedding representations to enhance the artificial agent's ability to recognise unknown scenes. Consequently, we assert that this research holds broad applications, particularly in drone parcel delivery, where an aerial robot can employ text descriptions to identify a destination. Furthermore, this concept can also be applied to other service robots tasked with delivering to unfamiliar locations, relying exclusively on user-provided textual descriptions.

In the Atacama Desert, the spectral distribution of solar radiation differs from the global standard, showing very high levels of irradiation with a particularly high ultraviolet content. Additionally, the response of photovoltaic (PV) technologies is spectrally dependent, so it is necessary to consider local conditions and type of technology to optimize PV devices since solar cells are usually designed for maximum performance under standard testing conditions (STC). In this work, we determined geometrical and doping parameters to optimize the power of an n-type bifacial passivated emitter and rear totally diffused solar cell (n-PERT). Six parameters (the thicknesses of cell, emitter, and back surface field, as well as doping concentration of emitter, base, and back surface field) were used to optimize the cell under the Atacama Desert spectrum (AM 1.08) and under standard conditions (AM 1.5) through a genetic algorithm. To validate the model, the calculated performance of the n-PERT cell was compared with experimental measurements. Computed and experimental efficiencies showed a relative difference below 1% under STC conditions. Through the optimization process, we found that different geometry and doping concentrations are necessary for cells to be used in the Atacama Desert. Reducing the thickness of all layers and increasing doping can lead to a relative increment of 5.4% in the cell efficiency under AM 1.08. Finally, we show the potential effect of metallization and the viability of reducing the thicknesses of the emitter and the back surface field.

The reaction-diffusion model constitutes one of the most influential mathematical models to study distribution of morphogens in tissues. Despite its widespread use, the effect of finite tissue size on model-predicted spatio-temporal morphogen distributions has not been completely elucidated. In this study, we analytically investigated the spatio-temporal distributions of morphogens predicted by a reaction-diffusion model in a finite one-dimensional domain, as a proxy for a biological tissue, and compared it with the solution of the infinite-domain model. We explored the reduced parameter, the tissue length in units of a characteristic reaction-diffusion length, and identified two reaction-diffusion regimes separated by a crossover tissue size estimated in approximately three characteristic reaction-diffusion lengths. While above this crossover the infinite-domain model constitutes a good approximation, it breaks below this crossover, whereas the finite-domain model faithfully describes the entire parameter space. We evaluated whether the infinite-domain model renders accurate estimations of diffusion coefficients when fitted to finite spatial profiles, a procedure typically followed in fluorescence recovery after photobleaching (FRAP) experiments. We found that the infinite-domain model overestimates diffusion coefficients when the domain is smaller than the crossover tissue size. Thus, the crossover tissue size may be instrumental in selecting the suitable reaction-diffusion model to study tissue morphogenesis.

Nanofiltration has been shown to be effective in removing pharmaceutical compounds from water and wastewater, so different mechanisms can influence treatment performance. In the present work, we carried out a case study evaluating the performance of two nanofiltration membranes in the removal of Atenolol (ATN)-a pharmaceutical compound widely used for the treatment of arterial hypertension-under different conditions such as operating pressure, ATN concentration, and solution pH. By determining the B parameter, which quantifies the solute/membrane affinity, we verified that the solution pH influenced the performance of the membranes, promoting attraction or repulsion between the ATN and the membranes. At pH 2.5, both membranes and ATN were positively charged, causing electrostatic repulsion, showing lower values of the B parameter and, consequently, higher ATN rejections. At such a pH, the mean ATN rejection for the loose membrane (NF270) was 82%, while for the tight membrane (NF90) it was 88%. On the other hand, at 12 bar pressure, the NF70 membrane (5.1 × 10 -5 m s-1) presented mean permeate fluxes about 2.8 times greater than the NF90 membrane (1.8 × 10-5 m s-1), indicating that NF270 is the most suitable membrane for this application.

BACKGROUND: There is growing evidence that individuals within populations can vary in both habitat use and movement behavior, but it is still not clear how these two relate to each other. The aim of this study was to test if and how individual bats in a Stunira lilium population differ in their movement activity and preferences for landscape features in a correlated manner. METHODS: We collected data on movements of 27 individuals using radio telemetry. We fitted a heterogeneous-space diffusion model to the movement data in order to evaluate signals of movement variation among individuals. RESULTS: S. lilium individuals generally preferred open habitat with Solanum fruits, regularly switched between forest and open areas, and showed high site fidelity. Movement variation among individuals could be summarized in four movement syndromes: (1) average individuals, (2) forest specialists, (3) explorers which prefer Piper, and (4) open area specialists which prefer Solanum and Cecropia. CONCLUSIONS: Individual preferences for landscape features plus food resource and movement activity were correlated, resulting in different movement syndromes. Individual variation in preferences for landscape elements and food resources highlight the importance of incorporating explicitly the interaction between landscape structure and individual heterogeneity in descriptions of animal movement.

In this paper, we propose a periodic reaction-diffusion model of Zika virus with seasonal and spatial heterogeneous structure in host and vector population. We introduce the basic reproduction ratio [Formula: see text] for this model and show that the disease-free periodic solution is globally asymptotically stable if [Formula: see text], while the system admits a globally asymptotically stable positive periodic solution if [Formula: see text]. Numerically, we study the Zika transmission in Rio de Janeiro Municipality, Brazil, and investigate the effects of some model parameters on [Formula: see text]. We find that the neglect of seasonality underestimates the value of [Formula: see text] and the maximum carrying capacity affects the spread of Zika virus.

Studies on the drying kinetics of medicinal, aromatic and spice plants are a necessary step towards establishing the combination of drying parameters that would not qualitatively and quantitatively alter the quality of the fresh product. The purpose of this study was to investigate the drying kinetics of Brazilian peppertree (Schinus terebinthifolius) leaves and to verify whether the theoretical diffusion and the semi-empirical Lewis drying models were capable of accurately predicting the drying curves of the product at 35, 40, and 45°C, with a dry air mass flow rate of 0.731 kg s-1 m-2. Leaves were collected at 0800 h, 1200 h and 1700 h. The goodness of fit between experimental and predicted values was based on the correlation coefficient, root mean square error, mean absolute percentage error, mean bias error, and fit index. Residual plot analysis was also considered in the selection of the most effective drying model. Temperature had a pronounced effect on mass transfer and drying rate decreased continuously during the course of drying. Leaf collection time had little influence on the drying kinetics. Effective moisture diffusivity was found to increase with temperature. The results indicated that the Lewis model was considered a better predictor of the thin-layer drying behaviour of Brazilian peppertree leaves than the theoretical model based on Fick's second law of diffusion.


Estudos sobre a cinética da secagem de plantas medicinais, aromáticas e condimentares são necessários para o estabelecimento de parâmetros operacionais de secagem de forma a não alterar significativamente a qualidade e o perfil fitoquímico dessas plantas. O objetivo do presente trabalho foi investigar a cinética da secagem das folhas da aroeira-vermelha (Schinus terebinthifolius), além de verificar se o modelo teórico de difusão e o modelo semi-empírico de Lewis são capazes de predizer com acurácia as curvas de secagem do produto a 35, 40 e 45°C, com fluxo de ar seco de 0,731 kg s-1 m-2. As folhas foram coletadas às 8:00, 12:00 e 17:00 h. O grau de adequação dos valores obtidos pelas curvas de secagem àqueles obtidos experimentalmente foi avaliado empregando-se o coeficiente de determinação, a raiz do erro quadrático médio, o erro percentual absoluto médio, o viés médio e o índice de ajuste. A análise da dispersão dos resíduos também foi utilizada na escolha do modelo de predição mais efetivo. Observou-se que a temperatura tem efeito significativo na transferência de massa e a taxa de secagem diminuiu continuamente ao longo da secagem. O horário de coleta das folhas não teve influência significativa sobre a cinética da secagem. A difusividade efetiva da água aumentou com o aumento da temperatura. Os resultados evidenciaram que o modelo de Lewis descreve com maior grau de acurácia a secagem de folhas de aroeira-vermelha que o modelo teórico baseado na Segunda Lei de Difusão de Fick.

Several authors have studied the release profile of drugs incorporated in different devices. However, to the best of our knowledge, although many studies have been done on the release of tetracycline, in these release devices, no study has investigated if the released compound is actually the tetracycline, or, instead, a degraded product. This approach is exploited here. In this work, we analyse the influence of two drying methods on the tetracycline delivery behaviour of synthesised glasses using the sol-gel process. We compare the drying methods results using both theoretical models and practical essays, and analyse the chemical characteristic of the released product in order to verify if it remains tetracycline. Samples were freeze-dried or dried in an oven at 37°C and characterised by several methods such as Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), thermogravimetric analysis (TG), differential thermogravimetric analysis (DTG), differential thermal analyses (DTA) and gas adsorption analysis (BET). The released concentration of tetracycline hydrochloride was studied as a function of time, and it was measured by ultraviolet spectrophotometry in the tetracycline wavelength. The drug delivery profiles were reasonably consistent with a diffusion model analysis. In addition, we observed higher release rates for the freeze-dried compared to those dried in an oven at 37°C. This higher release can be attributed to larger pore size for the freeze-dried sample systems with tetracycline, which promoted more water penetration, improving the drug diffusion. The analysis of the solution obtained in the release tests using high-performance liquid chromatography- mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS) confirmed that tetracycline was being released.

The aim of this work was to remove the dyes Reactive Blue 221 (RB 221) and Reactive Blue 198 (RB 198) of synthetic effluent using the immobilized enzyme horseradish peroxidase (HRP) in Ca-alginate beads. Experimental parameters affecting the dye removal process such as the effect of pH, temperature, hydrogen peroxide concentration, mass capsules, and reuse were evaluated, and a numerical model of mass transfer was developed. A maximum removal of 93 and 75%, respectively, for the dyes RB 221 and RB 198, at pH 5.5 and temperature of 30 °C, concentration of hydrogen peroxide of 43.75 µM for dye RB 221 and 37.5 µM for the dye of RB 198 was obtained. A removal reaction of 180 min for RB 221 and 240 min for RB 198 was observed. Three reuse cycles of use of immobilized enzyme were achieved for both dyes. The numerical model proposed led to a good fit compared to experimental data. The HRP enzyme immobilized in Ca-alginate capsules showed a great potential for biotechnological applications, especially for the removal of reactive dyes.

BACKGROUND: Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is frequently associated with poorer reading ability; however, the specific neuropsychological domains linking this co-occurrence remain unclear. This study evaluates information-processing characteristics as possible neuropsychological links between ADHD symptoms and RA in a community-based sample of children and early adolescents with normal IQ (⩾70). METHOD: The participants (n = 1857, aged 6-15 years, 47% female) were evaluated for reading ability (reading single words aloud) and information processing [stimulus discriminability in the two-choice reaction-time task estimated using diffusion models]. ADHD symptoms were ascertained through informant (parent) report using the Development and Well-Being Assessment (DAWBA). Verbal working memory (VWM; digit span backwards), visuospatial working memory (VSWM, Corsi Blocks backwards), sex, socioeconomic status, and IQ were included as covariates. RESULTS: In a moderated mediation model, stimulus discriminability mediated the effect of ADHD on reading ability. This indirect effect was moderated by age such that a larger effect was seen among younger children. CONCLUSION: The findings support the hypothesis that ADHD and reading ability are linked among young children via a neuropsychological deficit related to stimulus discriminability. Early interventions targeting stimulus discriminability might improve symptoms of inattention/hyperactivity and reading ability.

Cow bone char was investigated as sorbent for the defluoridation of aqueous solutions. The cow bone char was characterized in terms of its morphology, chemical composition, and functional groups present on the bone char surface using different analytical techniques: SEM, EDS, N2-BET method, and FTIR. Batch equilibrium studies were performed for the bone chars prepared using different procedures. The highest sorption capacities for fluoride were obtained for the acid washed (q = 6.2 ± 0.5 mg/g) and Al-doped (q = 6.4 ± 0.3 mg/g) bone chars. Langmuir and Freundlich models fitted well the equilibrium sorption data. Fluoride removal rate in batch system is fast in the first 5 h, decreasing after this time until achieving equilibrium due to pore diffusion. The presence of carbonate and bicarbonate ions in the aqueous solution contributes to a decrease of the fluoride sorption capacity of the bone char by 79 and 31 %, respectively. Regeneration of the F-loaded bone char using 0.5 M NaOH solution leads to a sorption capacity for fluoride of 3.1 mg/g in the second loading cycle. Fluoride breakthrough curve obtained in a fixed-bed column presents an asymmetrical S-shaped form, with a slow approach of C/C 0 â†’ 1.0 due to pore diffusion phenomena. Considering the guideline value for drinking water of 1.5 mg F-/L, as recommended by World Health Organization, the service cycle for fluoride removal was of 71.0 h ([F-]feed âˆ¼ 9 mg/L; flow rate = 1 mL/min; m sorbent = 12.6 g). A mass transfer model considering the pore diffusion was able to satisfactorily describe the experimental data obtained in batch and continuous systems.

In this work, the mechanism of the Cr(III) sorption by Salvinia auriculata biosorbent was studied in two stages. To understand the influence of the sorption parameters on the Cr(III) uptake, preliminary tests were performed. First, S. auriculata biomass was separately treated with base and acid solutions. Second, acid and base treatment of samples was performed based on the knowledge data base of our group. It was achieved a higher Cr(III) sorption capacity above 15 mg g-1 as associated to an increase of the micro-pores specific area and biosorbent volume. The obtained kinetic data of raw and treated biosorbents were well described by the intra-particle diffusion model. In this model, Cr(III) adsorption onto treated biomass is progressively improved with appearing of different mass transfer zones from out layer up to micro-porous layers. The equilibrium data of raw biomass were best described by the Langmuir isotherm, whereas the equilibrium data of the treated biomass were best fit by a combination of both Langmuir and Dubinin-Radushkevich isotherms. At low concentrations the adsorption most likely occurred on the outer monolayer, as proposed by the Langmuir model, followed by the adsorption on the micro-porous layers, as validated by the Dubinin-Radushkevich isotherm.

Se presentan los modelos de hopping de rango variable (variable range hopping; VRH), vecinos cercanos (nearest neighbor hopping; NNH) y barreras de potencial presentes en las fronteras de grano; como mecanismos de transporte eléctrico predominantes en los materiales semiconductores para aplicaciones fotovoltaicas. Las medidas de conductividad a oscuras en función de temperatura fueron realizadas para región de bajas temperaturas entre 120 y 400 K con Si y compuestos Cu3BiS2 y Cu2ZnSnSe4. Siguiendo la teoría de percolación, se obtuvieron parámetros hopping y la densidad de estados cerca del nivel de Fermi, N(E F), para todas las muestras. A partir de los planteamientos dados por Mott para VRH, se presentó el modelo difusional, que permitió establecer la relación entre la conductividad y la densidad de estados de defecto o estados localizados en el gap del material. El análisis comparativo entre modelos, evidenció, que es posible obtener mejora hasta de un orden de magnitud en valores para cada uno de los parámetros hopping que caracterizan el material.


Here, we present variable range hopping (VRH) models, nearest neighbor hopping (NNH) and potential barriers present at the grain boundaries, as well as mechanisms of electrical transport predominant in semiconductor materials for photovoltaic applications. We performed dark conductivity measures according to temperature for low temperature regions between 120 and 400 K in Si and Cu3BiS2 and Cu2ZnSnSe4 compounds. Using the percolation theory, we obtained hopping parameters and the density of states near the Fermi, N(E F) level for all samples. Using the approach by Mott for VRH, we obtained the diffusion model, which established the relationship between conductivity and density of defect states or localized gap states of the material. The comparative analysis between models evidenced that it is possible to obtain improvement of an order of magnitude in the values of each of the hopping parameters that characterize the material.


Apresentam-se os modelos de hopping de categoria variável (variable range hopping; VRH), vizinhos próximos (nearest neighbor hopping, NNH) e barreiras de potenciais presentes nas fronteiras de grãos; como mecanismo de transporte elétrico predominantes nos materiais semicondutores para aplicações fotovoltaicas. As medidas de condutividade no escuro em função da temperatura foram realizadas para região de baixas temperaturas entre 120 e 400 K com Si e compostos Cu3BiS2 e Cu2ZnSnSe4. Seguindo a teoria da percolação obtiveram-se parâmetros hopping e a densidade de estados próximos do nível Fermi[BO1] N(E F) para toda a amostra. A partir das abordagens seguidas por Mott para VRH, apresentou-se o modelo de difusão, que permitiu estabelecer a relação entre a condutividade e a densidade de estados de defeito ou estados localizados no gap do material. A análise comparativa dos modelos mostrou que é possível obter melhoria até de uma amplitude de magnitude em valores para cada um dos parâmetros hopping que caracterizam o material.
