RESUMO

Noise pollution has become a public health problem in several countries worldwide. Noise maps are tools used in many cities, mainly on the European continent. In other regions, they are used in smaller areas, and few studies focus on hospital areas, considered noise-sensitive zones. In this context, this study aimed to perform sound measurements and noise maps for the day and night periods in the surroundings of three hospitals in Sorocaba, Brazil. Sound measurements occurred around the three hospitals based on NBR 10151 and ISO 1996 standards. The noise maps were drawn up using a calculation model based on ISO 9613-2. Results showed that the sound measurement points around the hospitals had levels above those recommended by the Brazilian standard for sensitive areas (LAeq 50 and 45 dB for day and night, respectively). The acoustic maps showed high sound levels on all faces of the hospital buildings, both during the day and at night. The worst scenario concerned the vicinity of the roads with the highest flow and speed of vehicles. We concluded that three different hospitals in the city have high sound levels in their surroundings above the recommended for sensitive areas.

RESUMO

Faced with the accelerated growth of cities and the consequent increase in the number of motor vehicles, urban noise levels caused by vehicular traffic have increased considerably. To assess noise levels in cities and implement noise control measures or identify the problem's location in different urban areas, it is necessary to obtain the noise levels to which people are exposed. Noise maps are tools that have applications as they are cartographic representations of the noise level distribution in an area and over a period of time. This article aims to identify, select, evaluate, and synthesize information, through a systematic literature review, on using different road noise prediction models, in sound mapping computer programs in countries that do not have a standard noise prediction model. The analysis period was from 2018 to 2022. From a previous analysis of articles, the choice of topic was based on identifying various models for predicting road noise in countries without a standardized sound mapping model. The papers compiled by a systematic literature review showed that studies concentrated in China, Brazil, and Ecuador, the most used traffic noise prediction models, were the RLS-90 and the NMPB, and the most used mapping programs were SoundPLAN and ArcGIS with a grid size of 10 × 10 m. Most measurements were carried out during a 15-min period at a height from the ground level of 1.5 m. In addition, it was observed that research on noise maps in countries that do not have a local model has been increasing over time.

RESUMO

Environmental noise exposure has been considered one of the most common hazards worldwide, especially in the workplace environment, and could produce a variety of health issues. Some epidemiological evidence supports the association between occupational noise exposition and a high risk for hypertension and cardiovascular diseases. Wang et al. has conducted an observational cross-sectional study using occupational data of 4746 workers, 32.4% were exposed to high occupational noise. These exposed individuals had a moderate increase in the risk for hypertension (adjusted odds ratio [OR], 1.30; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.05-1.62). The subgroup analyses showed that the relationship between noise and hypertension prevalence was stronger in young participants (OR, 1.70; 95% CI, 1.21-2.40). Noise exposure activates the sympathetic and endocrine systems producing an increase in blood pressure and the changes in other biological risk factors. Moreover, a recently published study showed that oxidative stress and DNA damage were significantly higher in subjects exposed to noise. Emotional stress reactions and unconscious physiological stress could also be potential mechanisms for hypertension. Finally, physiological stress caused by noise exposure may also increase indulgence in unhealthy behaviors, such as smoking and alcohol consumption, and indirectly result in an increased risk of hypertension and cardiovascular diseases. Previously published studies showed relationships between environmental noise exposure (including road traffic, railway, and aircraft noises) and the development of hypertension and cardiovascular diseases. Thus, the study by Wang et al. emphasizes the importance of environmental control in the prevention of cardiovascular diseases, not only in the workplace but also outside it.

The behavior of environmental noise in developing countries is conditioned by characteristics that are not only linked to transport, infrastructures, and industrial plants in the annuity (common representation in noise maps), but also to other types of sources and periodicities that can influence significantly in noise levels. For this reason, this work proposes different temporal analyzes during the annuity that can be linked to the noisy activities typical of developing tropical countries. To do this, a noise monitoring network composed of seven monitors representing different sources present in the Aburrá Valley (AV) in Colombia is analyzed with measurements of LAeq, every hour, in a period between August 2016 and July 2019. The results show that AV noise is strongly influenced by leisure activities related to high-power sound systems, different celebrations, and continuous noise from car traffic that affect the population mainly on weekends and nights. This work marks a clear path to precisely address noise pollution in the action plans of developing countries.

RESUMO

Environmental noise (EN) refers to unpleasant harmful sounds that deteriorates living conditions. Therefore, this study aims to investigate how EN affects students at learning commons, where EN increases between 70 and 90 dBA, and which levels disturb psycho-physiologically. For this purpose, 16 students of Tecnologico de Monterrey were recruited: nine men and seven women. They were divided into four groups, and were involved in two activities: to solve a puzzle of 300 pieces without and with EN at 75 dBA. In both activities, a summative evaluation based on the level of puzzle completeness, and the electrophysiological monitoring of heart and blink rate, and neural electrical activity were conducted. Results showed that student performance was 4% higher in a quiet room than in learning commons. EN increased heart rate in 3.48%, and blink rate in 22.91%, and neural electrical activity was reduced at least in 3%, regardless of task demands. The findings of the present study suggest that academic work is difficult to undertake in learning commons when EN is above the permissible limit, and what diminishes the performance of students and alters their electrophysiological functioning.

RESUMO

Environmental noise has been growing in recent years, causing numerous health problems. Highly sensitive environments such as hospitals deserve special attention, since noise can aggravate patients' health issues and impair the performance of healthcare professionals. This work consists of a systematic review of scientific articles describing environmental noise measurements taken in hospitals between the years 2015 and 2020. The researchers started with a consultation of three databases, namely, Scopus, Web of Science, and ScienceDirect. The results indicate that for the most part, these studies are published in journals in the fields of medicine, engineering, environmental sciences, acoustics, and nursing and that most of their authors work in the fields of architecture, engineering, medicine, and nursing. These studies, which are concentrated in Europe, the Americas, and Asia, use as reference values sound levels recommended by the World Health Organization. Leq measured in hospital environments showed daytime values ranging from 37 to 88.6 dB (A) and nighttime values of 38.7 to 68.8 dB (A). Leq values for outdoor noise were 74.3 and 56.6 dB (A) for daytime and nighttime, respectively. The measurements were taken mainly inside hospitals, prioritizing more sensitive departments such as intensive care units. There is a potential for growth in work carried out in this area, but research should also include discussions about guidelines for improvement measures aimed at reducing noise in hospitals.

RESUMO

Rail freight transport has grown worldwide and in Brazil as well, which increases people's exposure to railway noise. A promising tool to manage it is Strategic Noise Mapping (SNM), which has advanced around the world favoring a common and more accurate calculation method that requires more accurate measurements. This paper presents a framework to manage railway noise exposure in Brazil based on a case study carried out in the city with the longest stretches of railway tracks in urban areas. Background noise due to road traffic and train pass-by noise levels were measured for knowledge of noise sources and SNM calibration. Background noise predicted by the CNOSSOS-EU (Road) method reached an accuracy within ±2 dB(A) and was overestimated by the NMPB-96 method. The combination with railway noise using the SRM II and ISO 9613 calculation methods maintained the aforementioned accuracy, while the current best fit CNOSSOS-EU (Railway and Industry) configuration for the study area overestimated it. Although the study area is a quiet suburb, a quarter of its population is exposed to road traffic noise levels above those recommended by WHO, and more than 40% are affected by rail noise that is 5 dB(A) or higher than the background noise. The elimination of level crossings (LC) and the need to sound the train horn is more cost-effective than noise barriers. Therefore, the strategy to manage exposure to rail noise in Brazil should involve altering residential zoning of non-built-up areas next to the railways to repurpose them for other land uses and/or establish acoustic performance criteria for new buildings; federal government investing in reducing the number of LC or railway variants; and railway operators investing in the creation of an emission database for noise control at the source.

RESUMO

The effects of demographic and environmental noise on the vital dynamics and spatial pattern formation are studied for a predator-prey system with strong Allee effect in the prey species. Time and space are taken discrete. It is shown that noise can promote extinction depending on the growth and interaction parameters as well as the noise type and amplitude. The extinction risk increases with the noise amplitude; however, the environmental and demographic noise can have different effects on the risk of extinction. In space, the spatial structures obtained are blurred versions of the deterministic ones in most scenarios. In particular, the complex spatial structures that appear in the parameter domains where the deterministic local dynamics leads to extinction are robust to the density-dependent stochastic fluctuations but are disrupted with environmental noise.

RESUMO

Mining plays an important role in Brazilian exports. On the other hand, large urban centers like São Paulo, with approximately 21 million inhabitants, also demand an increasing domestic consumption of natural resources, such as construction aggregate. There are many quarries located in the surroundings of urban centers in Brazil, competing with the growth of urbanized areas. Such proximity leads to a series of conflicts involving quarries and surrounding communities, where the increase in noise levels is highlighted. Operations in quarries, in general, are intermittent. Noisier equipment, such as drilling rigs and primary crushers, operates only a few hours during the day, while other operations, such as screening and secondary and tertiary crushing, are more constant. This paper presents a study carried out in a quarry located near São Paulo, where in addition to conventional short term noise measurements at surrounding receptors, one noise monitoring station was installed, allowing to identify the noisiest moments during the quarry operating time. Through data transmitted by wireless technology, it was possible to follow the noise variations emitted from mining activities in real time and observe the noisiest events that were recorded for events that exceeded the established standards. A mobile application associated to this monitoring station facilitated the quarry's manager and employees to access immediately the monitoring information. Therefore, by using this system, it was possible to evaluate the effectiveness of noise reduction measures already taken and indicate what steps still need to be held.

RESUMO

In many countries such as Chile, there is scarce official information for generating accurate noise maps. Therefore, specific simplification methods are becoming a real need for the acoustic community in developing countries. Thus, the main purpose of this work was to evaluate and apply simplified methods to generate a cost-effective traffic noise map of a small city of Chile. The experimental design involved the simplification of the cartographic information on buildings by clustering the households within a block, and the classification of the vehicular traffic flows into categories to generate an inexpensive noise map. The streets have been classified according to the official road classification of the country. Segregation of vehicles from light, heavy and motorbikes is made to account for traffic flow. In addition, a number of road traffic noise models were compared with noise measurements and consequently the road traffic model RLS-90 was chosen to generate the noise map of the city using the Computer Aided Noise Abatement (CadnaA) software. It was observed a direct dependence between noise levels and traffic flow versus each category of street used. The methodology developed in this study appears to be convenient in developing countries to obtain accurate approximations to develop inexpensive traffic noise maps.

RESUMO

Noise levels of common sources such as vehicles, whistles, sirens, car horns and crowd sounds are mixed in urban soundscapes. Nowadays, environmental acoustic analysis is performed based on mixture signals recorded by monitoring systems. These mixed signals make it difficult for individual analysis which is useful in taking actions to reduce and control environmental noise. This paper aims at separating, individually, the noise source from recorded mixtures in order to evaluate the noise level of each estimated source. A method based on blind deconvolution and blind source separation in the wavelet domain is proposed. This approach provides a basis to improve results obtained in monitoring and analysis of common noise sources in urban areas. The method validation is through experiments based on knowledge of the predominant noise sources in urban soundscapes. Actual recordings of common noise sources are used to acquire mixture signals using a microphone array in semi-controlled environments. The developed method has demonstrated great performance improvements in identification, analysis and evaluation of common urban sources.

RESUMO

A noise map is a cartographic representation of the noise level distribution in a determined area and period of time. This article presents the most important aspects of the noise mapping project across Santiago, a city of nearly six million inhabitants. The study was performed employing limited information and a low-cost, vehicular traffic noise predictive model. The methodology applied to the Chilean experience can also be used to create noise maps for major cities. An evaluation of noise prediction models, considering simplifications of the modeling environment (buildings) and for the vehicular traffic flow rates attributed to the streets under study, was made. The noise levels were modeled according to recommended exposure values for the above area. The results revealed that the noise levels for the city of Santiago were high in a relevant percentage of the surface.

A study on noise contamination and particle pollution of PM10 associated with mobile sources in the Pereira-Dosquebradas conurbation was carried out. Objective: To analyze the relationship between health, environmental noise and PM10 due to vehicular flow. Methodology: Measurements of environmental noise and vehicular flow in three sites of interest by traffic congestion were carried out. Additionally, information from air quality stations available in the study area and population with acute respiratory disease (ARD) was collected. From these data, models to estimate the environmental noise from traffic flow conditions were developed and two simulation models using dynamic characteristics of population growth, traffic flow and potential emissions of particulate matter are proposed in order to estimate the potential effect on health and associated induced costs associated with pollution. Results: In the sites studied, it was found that the flow of traffic and environmental noise are statistically higher in the afternoon peak hour (5 pm to 7 pm). The higher traffic flow was found in the sector of Avenida Sur in Pereira with an average of 2,693 veh-Eq/h. Furthermore, from the simulation models, it was found that the environmental costs associated with air pollution (PM10) may become around 2% of the budget for the municipality of Pereira. Conclusion: Environmental noise is correlated with traffic flow. Environmental noise is generated mainly by the effect of traffic flow and it may exceed the limits established in the national standard for sites near hospitals. According to the simulation models developed, if the growth conditions of the vehicle fleet continue in the same tendency, in less than eight years the effects of high concentrations of particulate matter will cause a significant effect on morbidity due to acute respiratory disease and a higher estimated environmental cost.
