RESUMO

Controlling heavy metal pollution in agricultural soil has been a significant challenge. These heavy metals seriously threaten the surrounding ecological environment and human health. The effective assessment and remediation of heavy metals in agricultural soils are crucial. These two aspects support each other, forming a close and complete decision-making chain. Therefore, this review systematically summarizes the distribution characteristics of soil heavy metal pollution, the correlation between soil and crop heavy metal contents, the presence pattern and migration and transformation mode of heavy metals in the soil-crop system. The advantages and disadvantages of the risk evaluation tools and models of heavy metal pollution in farmland are further outlined, which provides important guidance for an in-depth understanding of the characteristics of heavy metal pollution in farmland soils and the assessment of the environmental risk. Soil remediation strategies involve multiple physical, chemical, biological and even combined technologies, and this paper compares the potential and effect of the above current remediation technologies in heavy metal polluted farmland soils. Finally, the main problems and possible research directions of future heavy metal risk assessment and remediation technologies in agricultural soils are prospected. This review provides new ideas for effective assessment and selection of remediation technologies based on the characterization of soil heavy metals.

OBJECTIVES: Forced migration and its subsequent sequelae have caused refugees to face significant adversities throughout the displacement process, making them susceptible to significant health issues. Refugees displaced in Africa are a group especially vulnerable to poor health outcomes, experiencing a documented decline in overall physical and mental health status and rise in mortality from non-communicable diseases (NCDs). Despite the heightened health risks experienced by Somali refugees, particularly women, research into their complex illness experiences and co-/multimorbid health conditions is scarce, leaving a gap in our understanding of the multifaceted health challenges of this population. DESIGN: Using structural vulnerability theory, this study explores how the broader host context shapes illness experiences for Somali refugee women in Kenya. Specifically, we describe the factors associated with illness experiences of urban Somali refugee women and how this compares with women with other similarly situated identities, such as Somali Kenyan women, other/non-Somali refugees, and Kenyan women. In-depth interviews were conducted with 43 women in Eastleigh, Kenya. RESULTS: Using hybrid thematic analysis, the emergent themes were grouped into three distinct domains: (1) multimorbid, complex illness experiences, (2) embodiment of structural vulnerability, and (3) distinct/shared vulnerability among refugee/non-refugee women. Results suggest that illness experiences of displaced refugee women are inextricably linked to traumatic experiences before displacement, as well as the experiences of transmigration stressors and the hostile socio-legal dynamics encountered post-displacement. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings also have implications for the need to consider intersectional identities when examining for differential exposure to structural risks and the susceptibility to poor health experiences as well as supports the need for urgent change and improvement in systems of social protection and basic care for refugees experiencing prolonged displacement.

Objective: The present work examined the anti-metastatic effects of auraptene and their underlying mechanisms of action in U87 Glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) cells. Materials and Methods: To test the hypothesis, cell culture, Matrigel invasion assay, scratch wound healing assay, gelatin zymography assay, qRT-PCR, and western blot experiments were conducted. Results: At sublethal concentrations of 12.5 and 25 µg/ml, auraptene exhibited a significant reduction in cell invasion and migration of U87 cells, as assessed using scratch wound healing and Transwell tests, respectively. The qRT-PCR and zymography experiments demonstrated a significant decrease in both mRNA expression and activities of MMP-2 and MMP-9 following auraptene treatment. Western blot analysis also showed that MMP-2 protein level and phosphorylation of metastasis-related proteins (p-JNK and p-mTOR) decreased in auraptene-treated cells. Molecular docking studies consistently demonstrated that auraptene exhibits a significant affinity towards MMP-2/-9, the ATP binding site of mTOR and JNK1/2/3. Conclusion: Auraptene inhibited the migration and invasion of GBM cells. This inhibitory effect was induced by modulating specific mechanisms, including suppressing MMPs, JNK, and mTOR activities.

Human migrations and different migratory flows have been as old as the practice of breastfeeding (BF). The reasons for migrating, the conditions, and its protagonists are so diverse, often constituting situations of vulnerability and risk for health decision-making at both the individual and collective levels. The relationship between BF and human migration is totally dynamic and includes multiple factors, which is why there is a need to characterize territorially its prevalence rate and variability depending on the context. The migration profiles that can be configured from factors, such as schooling, employment, the host country's health system, and support networks, among others, have heterogeneity between countries that make it necessary to identify them. This study is an in-depth review of the report on the practice of BF in migrant women. The Arksey and O'Malley method was used to perform the PubMed and SciELO searches. The search terms were "exclusive breastfeeding (EBF)," "breastfeeding," "migrant women," and "human migration," and original articles published in English, Spanish, and Portuguese were included. Of the 43 selected articles, differences were found between the various migrant groups, in variables such as socioeconomic level, education, access to health services, maternal knowledge, father factor, culture, and intention to breastfeed. The heterogeneity of the practice of BF between countries, as well as in intraregional migratory flows, establishes different protective or risk factors depending on where the phenomenon develops and its conditions.

Migration of microplastics (MPs) in soil-groundwater systems plays a pivotal role in determining its concentration in aquifers and future threats to the terrestrial environment, including human health. However, existing models employing an advection-dispersion equation are insufficient to incorporate the holistic mechanism of MP migration. Therefore, to bridge the gap associated with MP migration in soil-groundwater systems, a dispersion-drag force coupled model incorporating a drag force on MPs along with dispersion is developed and validated through existing laboratory and field-scale experiments. The inclusion of the MP dispersion notably increased the global maximum particle velocity (vmaxp) of MPs, resulting in a higher concentration of MPs in the aquifer, which is also established by sensitivity analysis of MP dispersion. Additionally, increasing irrigation flux and irrigation areas significantly accelerates MP migration downward from soil to deep saturated aquifers. Intriguingly, vmaxp of MPs exhibited a nonlinear relationship with MPs' sizes smaller than 20 µm reaching the highest value (=1.64 × 10-5 m/s) at a particle size of 8 µm, while a decreasing trend was identified for particle sizes ranging from 20 to 100 µm because of the hindered effect by porous media and the weaker effect of the drag force. Moreover, distinct behaviors were observed among different plastic types, with poly(vinyl chloride), characterized by the highest density, displaying the lowest vmaxp and minimal flux entering groundwater. Furthermore, the presence of a heterogeneous structure with lower hydraulic conductivity facilitated MP dispersion and promoted their migration in saturated aquifers. The findings shed light on effective strategies to mitigate the impact of MPs in aquifers, contributing valuable insights to the broader scientific fraternity.

Bismuth halide hybrid perovskites have emerged as promising alternatives to their lead halide homologs because of high chemical stability, low toxicity, and structural diversity. However, their advancements in optoelectronic field are plagued with poor charge transport, due to considerable microstrain triggered by bulky spacer. Herein, the di-tertiary ammonium spacer (N,N,N',N'-tetramethyl-1,4-butanediammonium, TMBD) is explored to direct stable 1D bismuth bromide lattice structure with relaxed microstrain. Compared to the primary pentamethylenediamine (PD)2+, the (TMBD)2+ adopting alternating alignment enables a unique H-bonds mode to distort the configuration of inorganic layers to form corner-sharing [BiBr5] near-regular chains with narrower bandgap, lower exciton binding energy, and reduced carrier-lattice interactions, thereby facilitating charge-carrier transport. Moreover, the (TMBD)2+ spacers largely suppress ion migration in perovskite lattice, as substantiated by the experimental and theoretical investigations. Consequently, (TMBD)BiBr5 single crystal photodetector delivers a 185-fold increase in current on/off ratio with respect to (PD)BiBr5 under white light irradiation, considerable responsivity (≈82.97 mA W-1), detectivity (≈8.06 ×1011 Jones) under weak light (0.02 mW cm-2) irradiation, in the top rank of the reported hybrid bismuth halide perovskites. This finding offers novel design criterion for high-performance lead-free perovskites.

BACKGROUND: Glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) is an aggressive type of brain tumor that is difficult to remove surgically. Research suggests that substances from saffron, namely crocetin and crocin, could be effective natural treatments, showing abilities to kill cancer cells. METHODS: Our study focused on evaluating the effects of crocetin on glioma using the U87 cell line. We specifically investigated how crocetin affects the survival, growth, and spread of glioma cells, exploring its impact at concentrations ranging from 75-150 µM. The study also included experiments combining crocetin with the chemotherapy drug Temozolomide (TMZ) to assess potential synergistic effects. RESULTS: Crocetin significantly reduced the viability, proliferation, and migration of glioma cells. It achieved these effects by decreasing the levels of Matrix Metallopeptidase 9 (MMP-9) and Ras homolog family member A (RhoA), proteins that are critical for cancer progression. Additionally, crocetin inhibited the formation of cellular structures necessary for tumor growth. It blocked multiple points of the Ak Strain Transforming (AKT) signaling pathway, which is vital for cancer cell survival. This treatment led to increased cell death and disrupted the cell cycle in the glioma cells. When used in combination with TMZ, crocetin not only enhanced the reduction of cancer cell growth but also promoted cell death and reduced cell replication. This combination therapy further decreased levels of high mobility group box 1 (HMGB1) and Receptor for Advanced Glycation End-products (RAGE), proteins linked to inflammation and tumor progression. It selectively inhibited certain pathways involved in the cellular stress response without affecting others. CONCLUSION: Our results underscore the potential of crocetin as a treatment for glioma. It targets various mechanisms involved in tumor growth and spread, offering multiple avenues for therapy. Further studies are essential to fully understand and utilize crocetin's benefits in treating glioma.

The Diederik cuckoo, Chrysococcyx caprius, is a small Afrotropical bird in the family Cuculidae. It is taxonomically related to 13 other species within the genus Chrysococcyx and is migratory in sub-Saharan Africa. It has a unique breeding behaviour of being a brood parasite: Breeding pairs lay their eggs in the nests of a host species and hatchlings expel the eggs of the host species. The aim of the present study was to investigate diversity in two circadian clock genes, Clock and Adcyap1, to probe for a relationship between genetic polymorphisms and their role in circannual timing and habitat selection (phenology) in intra-African migrants. DNA extracted from blood was used for the PCR amplification and sequencing of clock genes in 30 Diederik cuckoos. Three alleles were detected for Clock with similar genotypes between individuals from the Northern and Southern breeding ranges while 10 alleles were detected for Adcyap1, having shorter alleles in the North and longer alleles in the South. Population genetic analyses, including allele frequency and zygosity analysis, showed distinctly higher frequencies for the most abundant Clock allele, containing 10 polyglutamine repeats, as well as a high degree of homozygosity. In contrast, all individuals were heterozygous for Adcyap1 and alleles from both regions showed distinct differences in abundance. Comparisons between both clock genes and phenology found several phenotypic correlations. This included evidence of a relationship between the shorter alleles and habitat selection as well as a relationship between longer alleles and timing. In both instances, evidence is provided that these effects may be sex-specific. Given that these genes drive some of the synchronicity between environments and the life cycles of birds, they provide valuable insight into the fitness of species facing global challenges including climate change, urbanisation and expanding agricultural practices.

In this editorial, the roles of tata-box-binding protein-associated factor 15 (TAF15) in oncogenesis, tumor behavior, and as a therapeutic target in cancers in the context of gastrointestinal (GI) tumors are discussed concerning the publication by Guo et al. TAF15 is a member of the FET protein family with a comprehensive range of cellular processes. Besides, evidence has shown that TAF15 is involved in many diseases, including cancers. TAF15 contributes to carcinogenesis and tumor behavior in many tumors. Besides, its relationship with the mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPK) signaling pathway makes TAF15 a new target for therapy. Although, the fact that there is few studies investigating the expression of TAF15 constitutes a potential limitation in GI system, the association of TAF15 expression with aggressive tumor behavior and, similar to other organ tumors, the influence of TAF15 on the MAPK signaling pathway emphasize that this protein could serve as a new molecular biomarker to predict tumor behavior and target therapeutic intervention in GI cancers. In conclusion, more studies should be performed to better understand the prognostic and therapeutic role of TAF15 in GI tumors, especially in tumors resistant to therapy.

BACKGROUND: Small songbirds respond and adapt to various geographical barriers during their annual migration. Global flyways reveal the diverse migration strategies in response to different geographical barriers, among which are high-elevation plateaus. However, few studies have been focused on the largest and highest plateau in the world, the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau (QTP) which poses a significant barrier to migratory passerines. The present study explored the annual migration routes and strategies of a population of Siberian Rubythroats (Calliope calliope) that breed on the north-eastern edge of the QTP. METHODS: Over the period from 2021 to 2023, we applied light-level geolocators (13 deployed, seven recollected), archival GPS tags (45 deployed, 17 recollected), and CAnMove multi-sensor loggers (with barometer, accelerometer, thermometer, and light sensor, 20 deployed, six recollected) to adult males from the breeding population of Siberian Rubythroat on the QTP. Here we describe the migratory routes and phenology extracted or inferred from the GPS and multi-sensor logger data, and used a combination of accelerometric and barometric data to describe the elevational migration pattern, flight altitude, and flight duration. All light-level geolocators failed to collect suitable data. RESULTS: Both GPS locations and positions derived from pressure-based inference revealed that during autumn, the migration route detoured from the bee-line between breeding and wintering grounds, leading to a gradual elevational decrease. The spring route was more direct, with more flights over mountainous areas in western China. This different migration route during spring probably reflects a strategy for faster migration, which corresponds with more frequent long nocturnal migration flights and shorter stopovers during spring migration than in autumn. The average flight altitude (1856 ± 781 m above sea level) was correlated with ground elevation but did not differ between the seasons. CONCLUSIONS: Our finding indicates strong, season-dependent impact of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau on shaping passerine migration strategies. We hereby call for more attention to the unexplored central-China flyway to extend our knowledge on the environment-migration interaction among small passerines.

Huntington's disease (HD) is a complex neurodegenerative disorder with considerable heterogeneity in clinical manifestations. While CAG repeat length is a known predictor of disease severity, this heterogeneity suggests the involvement of additional genetic and environmental factors. Previously we revealed that HD primary fibroblasts exhibit unique features, including distinct nuclear morphology and perturbed actin cap, resembling characteristics seen in Hutchinson-Gilford Progeria Syndrome (HGPS). This study establishes a link between actin cap deficiency and cell motility in HD, which correlates with the HD patient disease severity. Here, we examined single-cell motility imaging features in HD primary fibroblasts to explore in depth the relationship between cell migration patterns and their respective HD patients' clinical severity status (premanifest, mild and severe). The single-cell analysis revealed a decline in overall cell motility in correlation with HD severity, being most prominent in severe HD subgroup and HGPS. Moreover, we identified seven distinct spatial clusters of cell migration in all groups, which their proportion varies within each group becoming a significant HD severity classifier between HD subgroups. Next, we investigated the relationship between Lamin B1 expression, serving as nuclear envelope morphology marker, and cell motility finding that changes in Lamin B1 levels are associated with specific motility patterns within HD subgroups. Based on these data we present an accurate machine learning classifier offering comprehensive exploration of cellular migration patterns and disease severity markers for future accurate drug evaluation opening new opportunities for personalized treatment approaches in this challenging disorder.

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a highly heterogeneous disease, making the prognostic prediction challenging. Ferroptosis, an iron-dependent form of cell death, is a key regulator in the initiation, progression, and metastasis of HCC. However, the expression and function of ferroptosis-related genes (FRGs) in HCC remained largely unclear. In this study, we analyzed TCGA datasets and identified 58 survival-related deferentially expressed FRGs (DE-FRGs). Then, based on the results of LASSO analysis, we developed a novel prognostic model based on 12 survival-related DE-FRGs. Survival assays indicated a strong prognostic ability of this new model in predicting clinical prognosis of HCC patients. In addition, we conducted an exploration of molecular subtypes related to HCC and delved into the associated immune characteristics and gene expression patterns. Among the 12 survival-related DE-FRGs, our attention focused on ABHD12 (abhydrolase domain containing 12) which was highly expressed in HCC and associated with advanced clinical stages. Multivariate assays confirmed that ABHD12 was a significant prognostic factor for HCC patients. Immune analysis revealed that ABHD12 may play an important role in tumor microenvironment. Finally, we performed RT-PCR and confirmed that ABHD12 was highly expressed in HCC cells. Functional experiments revealed that ABHD12 knockdown may suppress the proliferation and migration of HCC cells. These findings emphasized the significance of ABHD12 as a potential prognostic marker for HCC and its crucial role in the field of tumor biology. Additionally, the study introduces a novel survival model that holds promise for enhancing prognostic predictions in HCC patients. Overall, this research provided valuable insights for a deeper comprehension of the complexity of HCC and the development of personalized treatment strategies.

Measuring age-specific, contextual exposures is crucial for lifecourse epidemiology research. Longitudinal residential data offers a "golden ticket" to cumulative exposure metrics and can enhance our understanding of health disparities. Residential history can be linked to myriad spatiotemporal databases to characterize environmental, socioeconomic, and policy contexts that a person experienced throughout life. However, obtaining accurate residential history is challenging in the United States due to the limitations of administrative registries and self-reports. Xu et al. (Am J Epidemiol. 2024; 193(2):348-359) detail an approach to linking residential history sourced from LexisNexis ® Accurint ® to a Wisconsin-based research cohort, offering insights into challenges with residential history collection. Researchers must analyze the magnitude of selection and misclassification biases inherent to ascertaining residential history from cohort data. A lifecourse framework can provide insights into why the frequency and distance of moves is patterned by age, birth cohort, racial/ethnic identity, socioeconomic status, and urbanicity. Historic and contemporary migration patterns of marginalized people seeking economic and political opportunities must guide interpretations of residential history data. We outline methodologic priorities for use of residential history in health disparities research, including contextualizing residential history data with determinants of residential moves, triangulating spatial exposure assessment methods, and transparently quantifying measurement error.

Fusarium head blight (FHB) is one of the most destructive wheat diseases worldwide. To understand the impact of human migration and changes in agricultural practices on crop pathogens, here population genomic analysis with 245 representative strains from a collection of 4,427 field isolates of Fusarium asiaticum, the causal agent of FHB in Southern China is conducted. Three populations with distinct evolution trajectories are identifies over the last 10,000 years that can be correlated with historically documented changes in agricultural practices due to human migration caused by the Southern Expeditions during the Jin Dynasty. The gradual decrease of 3ADON-producing isolates from north to south along with the population structure and spore dispersal patterns shows the long-distance (>250 km) dispersal of F. asiaticum. These insights into population dynamics and evolutionary history of FHB pathogens are corroborated by a genome-wide analysis with strains originating from Japan, South America, and the USA, confirming the adaptation of FHB pathogens to cropping systems and human migration.

Meniscus injuries pose significant challenges in clinical settings, primarily due to the intrinsic heterogeneity of the tissue and the limited efficacy of current treatments. Endogenous cell migration is crucial for the healing process, yet the regulatory mechanisms of meniscus cell migration and its zonal dependency within the meniscus are not fully understood. Thus, this study investigates the role of epigenetic mechanisms in governing meniscus cell migration under inflammatory conditions, with a focus on their implications for injury healing and regeneration. Here, we discovered that a proinflammatory cytokine, TNF-α treatment significantly impedes the migration speed of inner meniscus cells, while outer meniscus cells are unaffected, underscoring a zonal-dependent response within the meniscus. Our analysis identified distinct histone modification patterns and chromatin dynamics between inner and outer meniscus cells during migration, highlighting the necessity to consider these zonal-dependent properties in devising repair strategies. Specifically, we found that TNF-α differentially influences histone modifications, particularly H3K27me3, between the two cell types. Transcriptome analysis further revealed that TNF-α treatment induces substantial gene expression changes, with inner meniscus cells exhibiting more pronounced alterations than outer cells. Gene cluster analysis pointed to distinct responses in chromatin remodeling, extracellular matrix assembly, and wound healing processes between the zonal cell populations. Moreover, we identified potential therapeutic targets by employing existing epigenetic drugs, GSKJ4 (a histone demethylase inhibitor) and C646 (a histone acetyltransferase inhibitor), to successfully restore the migration speed of inner meniscus cells under inflammatory conditions. This highlights their potential utility in treating meniscus tear injuries. Overall, our findings elucidate the intricate interplay between epigenetic mechanisms and meniscus cell migration, along with its meniscus zonal dependency. This study provides insights into potential targets for enhancing meniscus repair and regeneration, which may lead to improved clinical outcomes for patients with meniscus injuries and osteoarthritis.

The mechanism by which the skin, a non-visual tissue, responds to light remains unknown. To date, opsin expression has been demonstrated in keratinocytes, melanocytes, and fibroblasts, all of which are skin-derived cells. In this study, we examined whether the visual cycle, by which opsin activity is maintained, is present in skin keratinocytes. We also identified the wavelengths of light to which opsin in keratinocytes responds and explored their effects on skin keratinocytes. The fetal rat skin keratinocytes used in this study expressed OPN2, 3, and 5 in addition to enzymes involved in the visual cycle, and all-trans-retinal, which is produced by exposure to light, was reconverted to 11-cis-retinal, resulting in opsin activation. Using the production of all-trans-retinal after light exposure as an indicator, we discovered that keratinocytes responded to light at 450 nm. Furthermore, actin alpha cardiac muscle 1 expression in keratinocytes was enhanced and cell migration was suppressed by exposure to light at these wavelengths. These results indicate that keratinocytes express various opsins and have a visual cycle that keeps opsin active. Moreover, keratinocytes were shown to respond to the blue/UV region of the light spectrum, suggesting that opsin plays a role in the light response of the skin.

Migratory birds undertake long journeys across continents to reach breeding habitats with abundant resources. These migrations are essential for their survival and are shaped by a complex interplay of physiological adaptations, behavioral cues, and gene expression patterns. Central to migration are stopovers, critical resting points where birds replenish energy stores before continuing their journey. In this study, we integrate physiological measurements, behavioral observations, and molecular data from temporarily caged migrating Garden Warblers (Sylvia borin) to gain insights into their stopover strategies and physiological adaptations after crossing the extended ecological barrier formed by the Sahara Desert and the Mediterranean Sea. Depleted individuals, marked by low body mass and flight muscle mass, showcased remarkable plasticity in recovering and rapidly rebuilding energy stores within a short 5-day stopover. Flight muscle mass increased during this period, highlighting a dynamic trade-off between muscle rebuilding and refuelling. Notably, birds prioritizing muscle rebuilding exhibited a trade-off with the downregulation of genes related to lipid transport and metabolism and at the same time showing evidence of skeletal muscle angiogenesis. Early arrivals were more motivated to depart and exhibited higher levels of physiological stress. Our study highlights the importance of understanding the adaptive responses of birds to changing environmental conditions along their migration routes.

Winter flounder Pseudopleuronectes americanus (Walbaum 1792) are a coastal flatfish species of economic and cultural importance that have dwindled to <15, % of their historic abundance in the southern New England/Mid-Atlantic region of the United States, with evidence indicating near-extirpation of certain local populations. This species exhibits intricate behaviors in spawning and migration that contribute to population complexity and resilience. These behaviors encompass full or partial philopatry to natal estuaries, the generation of multiple pulses of larval delivery, and partial migration. The patterns of genetic diversity within and among estuaries and cohorts presented here carry important implications in understanding the susceptibility to demographic shocks, even if the full extent of genetic diversity within and among winter flounder stocks on the US East Coast remains unresolved. Our findings reveal connectivity between estuaries in Long Island, New York, suggesting the potential for genetic rescue of depleted subpopulations. Family reconstruction and relatedness analysis indicate that split cohorts and migration contingents are not the result of genetically distinct lineages. We found no evidence for genetic structure separating these groups, and in some instances, we were able to detect closely related individuals that belonged to different migratory contingents or cohorts. Characterizing the spatial and behavioral organization of this species at the population level is crucial for comprehending its potential for recovery, not only in terms of biomass but also in reinstating the complex population structure that supports resilience. The search for generality in winter flounder spawning and migration behavior remains elusive, but perhaps the lack of generalities within this species is what has allowed it to persist in the face of decades of environmental and anthropogenic stressors.

PURPOSE: We aimed to determine the incidence of TB among immigrants and non-immigrants in Sanliurfa, Türkiye between 2018 and 2022 and to examine the effect of COVID-19 on the incidence, location, and drug resistance patterns of tuberculosis. METHODS: This study was a retrospective review of patients diagnosed with tuberculosis in Sanliurfa Tuberculosis Dispensary between January-2018 and May-2022. Patients were assessed in terms of age, sex, site of tuberculosis, and drug resistance profiles before and during the COVID-19 pandemic. RESULTS: A total of 887 patients with TB were included in the study. The mean age of patients diagnosed with tuberculosis was 40.63 ± 17.50 years. Of the total number of patients diagnosed, 50.7% were women, 85.8% were Turkish citizens, and 91.9% were new cases. Comparing the rate of positive cultures between the pre-COVID-19 and COVID-19 periods revealed a statistically significant rate of positive culture during the COVID-19 period (p < 0.001). In terms of mortality, the mean age of the patients who died was 60.2 ± 18.4 years and that of the survivors was 39.1 ± 16.6 years; these values were statistically significant (p < 0.001). Among the patients who survived, the rate of pulmonary tuberculosis was statistically significantly higher than that of extrapulmonary tuberculosis (p < 0.001). CONCLUSION: The prevalence of pulmonary TB is high and the proportion of women is increasing. During the COVID-19 period, the number of patients diagnosed with TB decreased, but interestingly, the rate of positive cultures remained high, and the rate of resistance to INH also decreased. The results revealed rates similar to those reported by the World Health Organization.
