RESUMO

A novel ultrasound-assisted magnetic solid-phase extraction coupled with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (US-MSPE-GC/MS) was developed to detect trace amounts of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in tomato paste, using a magnetic biochar adsorbent derived from nectarine cores. The highest extraction recovery was attained under 10 mg adsorbent mass, 30 min extraction time, 9 % (w/v) sodium chloride, and elution with 200 µL of dichloromethane. Under optimum conditions, the method demonstrated excellent linearity (R2 > 0.992) across a wide concentration range (0.01-100 ng g-1) with high sensitivity (LODs: 0.028-0.053 ng g-1, LOQs: 0.094-0.176 ng g-1) and good repeatability (RSDs <5.96 %). The application of the US-MSPE-GC/MS method was tested on four brands of real tomato paste and no PAHs were detected in unspiked samples, indicating no background contamination. This method showed high relative recoveries 88.03-98.52 %) and good reproducibility (<9.19 %.) at two concentration levels, confirming its effectiveness for PAH analysis in real samples.

Thrips constitute one of the main nectarine pests, with damage either in flowering or before harvesting (silvering). Several species are associated with damage to flowers, but Frankliniella occidentalis (Pergande) (Thysanoptera: Thripidae) is the main species associated with summer damage in Europe. Tree canopies of nectarine orchards under organic and integrated management were sampled in Lleida and Girona at four key moments of the season (bud burst, full flowering, fruit setting stage, and colorization of the fruit) during 2021 and 2022 to determine the species composition in the area and the damage caused during fruit maturation. Adult individuals in flowers, leaves, and fruit surfaces were collected and identified, and silvering damage to the fruit surface was assessed in the Lleida area. Fifteen species in Lleida and 10 species in Girona were collected from the tree canopy. Organic orchards in Lleida showed lower populations and silvering damage levels when compared with integrated orchards. Thrips fuscipennis Haliday (Thysanoptera: Thripidae) 1836 was the main species in Lleida during harvest, and Frankliniella occidentalis (Pergande) 1895 was the main species in Girona. Due to their predominance, both species were associated with silvering damage during fruit maturation.

KEY MESSAGE: Transcription factor PpMYB5 promotes lignin synthesis by directly binding to the Pp4CL1/Pp4CL2 promoter and affecting their expression, which may be related to nectarine russeting formation. Nectarine russeting is usually considered to be a non-invasive physiological disease that usually occurs on late-maturing cultivars and seriously affects their appearance quality and commercial value. The cause of nectarine fruit rust is currently unknown. In this study, we compared two flat nectarine cultivars, 'zhongyoupanweidi' (HD; russeting-free cultivar) and 'zhongyoupanweihou' (TH; russeting-prone cultivar), with respect to nectarine russeting by means of microscopy, transcriptomics, and hormone analysis. Compared to HD fruits, TH fruits had a broken cuticle, missing wax layer, and heavy lignin deposition. RNA sequencing (RNA-seq) revealed significant alternations in the expression of genes related to lignin synthesis. Moreover, structure genes Pp4CL1 and Pp4CL2, MYB transcription factor (TF) gene PpMYB5 were identified through weighted gene co-expression network analysis (WGCNA). Molecular experiments and transgenic evidence suggested that PpMYB5 regulates Pp4CL1/Pp4CL2 expression to promote lignin synthesis. Overall, in addition to providing new insights into the formation of mechanisms for nectarine russeting, our study also establishes a foundation for nectarine russeting prevention.

This research investigated the efficacy of fucoidan-based coatings in preserving nectarine fruits at room temperature. The present study compared the preservation effects of different fucoidan concentrations (1%, 3%, 5%) with distilled water serving as a control (0%). The findings revealed that the addition of fucoidan dose-dependently improved the room temperature preservation quality of the nectarines. Notably, a 5% fucoidan concentration markedly delays the onset of the respiratory peak in nectarines. On day 14 of storage, the plants were subsequently cultured on a 5% fucoidan coating (F5), which exhibited a weight loss rate of 5.87%, a spoilage rate of 18.33%, a hardness of 3.87 kg/cm², a soluble solid content of 11.47%, a titratable acid content of 0.29% and an ascorbic acid content of 2.58%. The overall acceptability score was 7.83. These results demonstrated that coating with fucoidan is an effective method for the preservation of nectarines.

Cold stress occurs in late winter and early spring threatens greatly the nectarine industry. In this study, the semi-lethal low temperature (LT50) and thirteen cold resistance related parameters of five nectarine cultivars, including 'Nonglehong little princess' (LP), 'Luyou No. 5' (LY), 'Nonglehong No. 6' (NL), 'Zhongyou No. 20' (ZY) and 'Qiuhongzhu' (QH), were determined. Based on these parameters, they were categorized into high-(HR, including NL and LP), moderate-(MR, including QH) and low-cold resistant (LR, including ZY and LY) groups. The relative water (RW), proline (PRO), soluble sucrose (SS) and soluble protein (SP) contents, and superoxide dismutase (SOD) and peroxidase (POD) activities of HR cultivars were higher while their relative electronic conductivity (RE), malondialdehyde (MDA) and gibberellin acid (GA3) contents and catalase (CAT) activity were lower than other cultivars during natural overwintering. Redundancy analysis revealed that the lowest temperature in a day (LT) and LT50 significantly explains 69.8% and 10.9% of these physiological variables, respectively. Moreover, GA3 and indoleacetic acid (IAA) contents and CAT activity were positively correlated, while PRO, SS, ABA and RW contents were negatively correlated with both LT and LT50. Our study will be helpful in understanding the cold resistance variations of nectarine germplasm resources.

One way to improve the quality of food products is by conducting more thorough research on regional foods. This approach has several benefits, such as promoting human health, supporting the local economy, and preserving cultural food traditions. In this regard, our study investigated the potential of nectarine powder as a regional fruit product that could be developed into a global innovation. The present study examined: the physicochemical composition, antioxidant activity, microbiological load, and adsorption and desorption characteristics of the nectarine powder. The fruit powder was acquired through the use of a heat pump dryer, where drying took place at 42 °C for a duration of 8 h until achieving a moisture content ranging from 13.5 % to 14.5 %. The approximate physicochemical values are as follows: proteins, total carbohydrates, crude fiber, ash content and total lipids. Microbiological parameters, namely the total count of mesophilic aerobic and facultative anaerobic microorganisms, yeasts and molds, Escherichia coli, Salmonella spp., coagulase-positive staphylococci, and coliforms were checked and found to be within the acceptable limits as stipulated by the relevant state standards. Antioxidant activity was demonstrated through the utilization of various methods, including DPPH (33.19 ± 0.09mMTE/g extract), ABRS (2.55 ± 0.05mMTE/g extract), FRAP (1.43 ± 0.03mMTE/g extract) and CUPRAC (0.83 ± 0.01mMTE/g extract) methods. Investigation of the mass transfer sorption characteristics is performed using the gravimetric-static method. The conditions of the experiment were selected according to the usual conditions in which the food products are found in the commercial depot. The equilibrium and monolayer moisture data are investigated at 10 °C, 25 °C and 40 °C and relative air humidity in the wide range from 11 % to 87 %, achieved by the salts saturated solutions. To depict the adsorption and desorption isotherms, the modified models of Halsey, Chung-Pfost, Henderson, and Oswin were selected.

Nectarine [Prunus persica (L.) Batsch var.] fruits are highly susceptible to cracking during the ripening process, which significantly decreases their commercial value. In this study, we investigated the underlying mechanism of nectarine fruit-cracking using two nectarine varieties, namely, "Qiannianhong" (cracking-susceptible) and "CR1012" (cracking-resistant). Our findings indicate that nectarine fruit-cracking occurs during the second stage of fruit expansion. Despite no differences in epicarp cell size between "Qiannianhong" and "CR1012", the mesocarp cells of "Qiannianhong" were larger than those of "CR1012". Moreover, a comparison of starch hydrolysis between the two varieties revealed that "CR1012" had higher starch content in the mesocarp but lower soluble sugar content compared to "Qiannianhong". Additionally, by testing the α-amylase and ß-amylase activity of the mesocarp, our results showed a difference only in α-amylase activity between the two varieties. Furthermore, qRT-PCR detection indicated a higher expression level of the PpAmy1 (α-amylase synthesis gene) in "Qiannianhong" compared to "CR1012". To further investigate the role of PpAmy1, we employed RNAi technology to suppress its expression in "Qiannianhong" fruits. The results showed a significant reduction in α-amylase activity, starch hydrolysis, soluble sugar content, cell size of the mesocarp, and fruit-cracking. These findings underscore the pivotal role of PpAmy1 in the occurrence of nectarine fruit cracking.

Over the past few years, clean label food has been growing, meaning that consumers are searching for shorter and simpler ingredient lists composed of familiar and natural ingredients. The objective of the present work was to develop a vegan clean label mayonnaise, replacing the additives with fruit flour obtained from fruit reduced commercial value. The mayonnaises were prepared by replacing the egg yolk with 1.5% (w/w) lupin and faba proteins, while fruit flour (apple, nectarine, pear, and peach flour) was incorporated to substitute sugar, preservatives, and colorants. Texture profile analysis and rheology-small amplitude oscillatory measurements were performed to evaluate the impact of the fruit flour on mechanical properties. The mayonnaise antioxidant activity was also analyzed in terms of color, pH, microbiology, and stability measurements. The results showed that mayonnaises produced with fruit flour had better structure parameters in terms of viscosity, and texture, but also improved pH and antioxidant activity (p < 0.05) compared to the standard mayonnaise (mayonnaise without fruit flour). The incorporation of this ingredient into mayonnaise increases the antioxidant potential, though it is in lower concentrations compared to the fruit flours that compose them. Nectarine mayonnaise showed the most promising results in terms of texture and antioxidant capacity (11.30 mg equivalent of gallic acid/100 g).

Peach (Prunus persica) is an important stone fruit crop in Chile, with 7,665 h in 2022. Trunk diseases symptoms, including shoot dieback, longitudinal cankers and internal dark-brown to purple discolorations in cross sections were observed in a commercial orchard, in March of 2021. In severe cases, mostly in old trees, periderm sections were detached from the cankers, showing circinate groups of black long necked perithecia. To isolate the causal agent, wood samples were collected from March 2021 to October 2022, from symptomatic trees (n=23) of commercial orchards (n=12) (34°12'36.47"S 70°46'3.43"O to 34°34'26.48"S 70°58'17.97"O), located in O'Higgins Region, in the center of Chile. Isolations were performed cutting wood sections (0.5 cm) from the necrosis progress area, disinfecting them in sodium hypochlorite (10%), plating on a quarter-strength potato dextrose agar amended with 1 mg/L tetracycline (aPDA-tet) and incubating at 25°C, until mycelial development. Cultures were purified on PDA and identified by morphological means. Colonies on PDA were dark-pink and purple to orange-red, with regular margins, usually white, and produced abundant hyaline ellipsoidal to allantoid conidia (3.8-5.7 × 1.3 µm). In some cases, perithecia developed on disinfected wood on culture media, showing clavate unitunicate asci with hyaline allantoid ascospores 4.5-6.2 × 0.7 µm. The morphological characteristics of anamorph and teleomorph structures of field and culture isolates accorded to those described for Calosphaeria pulchella (1,2). DNA from representative isolates was extracted and the ITS region was amplified by PCR using ITS1/ITS4 primers (3), sequenced and BLAST analyzed. BLAST results revealed that ITS sequences identity of the representative isolates HMDu263 and HMDu271, shared 99 and 100% similarity, respectively, when compared to isolate CBS115999 (EU367451) (1,2,4). Sequences were accessioned to GenBank (OP216663 and OP216664 [ITS]). To determine the pathogenicity of C. pulchella, 17 representative isolates were inoculated on peach canes (25 cm) (n=7 per isolate), that were previously rooted on tap water amended with 500 ppm of indole-butyric acid, for 30 d. Mycelial plugs (0.5 cm) from actively growing colonies on PDA were placed on circular injuries made in the upper third of the shoots using a sterile corkborer and covered with plastic film. Sterile agar was used for controls. After 60 d of incubation in aerated tap water, at 23 +/-3 °C, bark was removed, and the necrosis length was measured and compared. Mean length values of lesions went from 9.5 to 27 cm. The most virulent isolates (n=7) were inoculated on fresh cuts of main shoots of nursery plants (n=3 per isolate) cv. Royal Glory, with 200 µL conidial suspensions (1x105 conidia/mL), on March 18th, 2022. Plants were incubated at shadehouse for 102 d and after the incubation period, shoots were cut (30 cm), bark was removed, and discoloration length was measured. All the isolates were pathogenic, with differences among their virulence (ANOVA, LSD, P < 0.05) from 5.2 cm (HMDu246) to 24.3 cm (HMDu266). Fungus was successfully reisolated from symptomatic canes (100%) and trees (98.7%), but not from the controls in both pathogenicity tests, fulfilling Koch's postulates. Calosphaeria pulchella was recently reported causing trunk disease in sweet cherry in Chile (4) and these results contribute to the knowledge of trunk diseases of fruit crops in Chile and to the understanding of the pathogen worldwide.

This field experiment focuses on the effects of a heavy rainfall event (DANA, depresión aislada en niveles altos) that occurred on 12-14 September 2019 (DOY, Day of the year, 255-257), in southern Spain on plant water status and the thermal response of nectarine trees. Two irrigation treatments were applied during the summer-autumn postharvest period (DOY 158-329): full-irrigated (CTL) and non-irrigated (DRY). Volumetric soil water content (θv), air temperature (Ta) and canopy temperature (Tc) were monitored in real-time and the crop water stress index (CWSI) was calculated. The difference in Tc between the DRY and CTL treatments (Tc' - Tc) is proposed as a new thermal indicator. Stem water potential (Ψstem) and leaf gas exchange measurements were recorded on representative days. During the DANA event, only the Tc measured by the infrared radiometer sensors could be monitored. Therefore, the effects of the DANA forced the soil water content sensors to be switched off, which prevented Ψstem and leaf gas exchange determinations from DOY 255 to 275. Before the DANA event, withholding irrigation caused a gradual decrease in the soil and plant water status in the DRY treatment. Significant differences appeared between treatments in the studied thermal indexes. Moreover, Tc' - Tc was more sensitive than Tc - Ta in assessing nectarine water stress. The effects of the DANA reduced these differences, suggesting different baselines for the calculation of CWSI. In this respect, the relationship Tc - Ta vs. VPD improved the coefficient of determination after the DANA event in full-irrigated trees. Similar values of Ψstem and leaf gas exchange were found in both treatments after the DANA event, even though thermal indexes showed some significant differences. In addition, the strong relationship found between Tc - Ta and CWSI vs. Ψstem worsened after DANA occurred, revealing a lower sensitivity of Ψstem compared to canopy temperature to accurately assess nectarine water status in these saturated soil conditions. This research underlined the robustness of infrared thermography to continuously monitor plant water status under these extreme weather conditions.

In this paper, we prepared a novel double-layer Perilla essential oil composite membrane microcapsule (PEOCM) by the composite methods of complex coacervation and interface polymerization. The particle size distribution, morphology, pressure resistance, thermal stability, and elemental proportions of the microcapsule shell of the obtained microcapsules were characterized by laser particle size analyzer, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), dynamic rheometer, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and energy spectrometer. In order to further examine the application effect of the PEOCM, we carried out a fresh-keeping experiment on nectarines. The results showed that the average volume diameter of the microcapsules was 226.9 µm, with a completely spherical shape and a slight depression on the surface and had good pressure resistance and thermal stability. The results also demonstrated that microencapsulation does not change the composition of Perilla essential oil, and the polyurea membrane with amide structure (-NH-CO-NH-) was formed successfully. Furthermore, the total soluble solids content and peroxidase activity of nectarines indicated that the PEOCM can be a preservative of food. PRACTICAL APPLICATION: We prepared a double-layer Perilla essential oil composite membrane microcapsule by the composite methods of complex coacervation and interface polymerization. The encapsulation conditions of the microcapsules were optimized, the structure of the microcapsule was characterized, and the fresh-keeping effects of the microcapsule on nectarine were studied. The results showed that microcapsules had a completely spherical shape and a slight depression on the surface and had good pressure resistance, good thermal stability, and good fresh-keeping ability. The above characteristics indicated that the double-layer microcapsules have good application prospect and plays an important role in food fresh-keeping and the preservation of essential oils.

Nectarines are perishable fruits grown in Southern Europe, valued for their sensorial properties. Chilling is used in the supply chain for Northern European consumers, while Southern European consumers can access fresh, locally grown fruit or cold-stored supermarket fruit. Cold storage and fruit ripening affect texture and flavour. Here a consumer survey and hedonic testing compared the appreciation of nectarines (cv. Big Top) in Italy and at two UK sites (n = 359). Fruit was at the commercial harvest stage, or stored at 1 °C or 5 °C for seven days, then sampled after two days' (Italy and one UK site) or four days' (second UK site) ambient recovery. In the consumer survey, the most important factors involved in purchase decision were ripeness, texture, colour, taste and price. Named varieties were more important to Italian than UK respondents, whilst ripeness, price, taste, blemishes, aroma, and 'best before date' were more important in the UK. In sensory analyses, fruits at the commercial harvest stage were preferred to those stored at 1 °C. Preference for the 5 °C stored peaches depended on recovery time. Distinct clusters of peach sensorial attributes were positively or negatively linked to hedonic rating. Factors important in purchase decisions did not affect hedonic rating in the tasting.

Simultaneous treatment with antagonistic bacteria Bacillus amylolquefaciens (SF14), Alcaligenes faecalis (ACBC1), and the food additive sodium bicarbonate (SBC) to control post-harvest brown rot disease caused by Monilinia fructigena, and their effect on the post-harvest quality of nectarines were evaluated. Four concentrations of SBC (0.5, 2, 3.5, and 5%) were tested. Results showed that bacterial antagonists displayed remarkable compatibility with different concentrations of SBC and that their viability was not affected. The results obtained in vitro and in vivo bioassays showed a strong inhibitory effect of all treatments. The combination of each bacterial antagonist with SBC revealed a significant improvement in their biocontrol efficacies. The inhibition rates of mycelial growth ranged from 60.97 to 100%. These results also indicated that bacterial antagonists (SF14 or ACBC1) used at 1 × 108 CFU/ mL in combination with 2, 3.5, or 5% SBC significantly improved the control of M. fructigina by inhibiting the germination of spores. Interestingly, disease incidence and lesion diameter in fruits treated with SF14, ACBC1 alone, or in combination with SBC were significantly lower than those in the untreated fruits. In vivo results showed a significant reduction in disease severity ranging from 9.27 to 64.83% compared to the untreated control, while maintaining the appearance, firmness, total soluble solids (TSS), and titratable acidity (TA) of fruits. These results suggested that the improved disease control by the two antagonistic bacteria was more likely due to the additional inhibitory effects of SBC on the mycelial growth and spore germination of the pathogenic fungus. Overall, the combination of both bacteria with SBC provided better control of brown rot disease. Therefore, a mixture of different management strategies can effectively control brown rot decay on fruits.

Amino acids play an interesting and important role in the metabolism of peaches. The objectives of this study were to investigate and compare amino acid profiles in peaches at harvest for future research about the resistance effects, nutritional value of amino acids in peaches and to produce high-quality peach wine. In the study, 10 peaches and nectarines, including white, yellow and red flesh varieties, were selected for amino acid concentration and composition by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Results showed sugar levels in nectarines were higher than in peaches in this study. High concentrations of total acids were found in "Tropic Prince", "Yixianhong", "NJN76" and "Hongrou1". Malic acids had the highest concentrations, compared toquinic and citric acid concentrations. Total amino acids in yellow and white flesh varieties were over 1100 µg/g FW, while red flesh varieties had total amino acids below 750 µg/g FW. Asn was the highest concentration compared to other amino acids, with the high concentration of Asn in "Tropical Prince' (3279.15 µg/g FW) and the lowest concentration in "Touxinhong" (559.60 µg/g FW). "Jinxia", "Yuhua3" and "Chengxiang" had better amino acid scores compared with others, in particularly the lowest value in the red flesh varieties. Finally, according to PCA and the heatmaps, amino acids in "Chengxiang"had evident differences to other varieties, which showed the different amino acid concentrations and composition. Overall, the results of this study highlighted three yellow flesh and one white flesh varieties that had satisfactory concentrations and components of amino acid values. In addition, amino acids were the precursors of aroma compounds, so these differences between varieties werea new way to screen the potential varieties for producing high quality peach wines with the anticipated specific characteristics.

Predicting the soluble solid content (SSC) of peaches based on visible/near infrared spectroscopy has attracted widespread attention. Due to the anisotropic structure of peach fruit, spectra collected from different orientations and regions of peach fruit will bring variations in the performance of SSC prediction models. In this study, the effects of spectra collection orientations and regions on online SSC prediction models for peaches were investigated. Full transmittance spectra were collected in two orientations: stem-calyx axis vertical (Orientation1) and stem-calyx axis horizontal (Orientation2). A partial least squares (PLS) method was used to evaluate the spectra collected in the two orientations. Then, each peach fruit was divided into three parts. PLS was used to evaluate the corresponding spectra of combinations of these three parts. Finally, effective wavelengths were selected using the successive projections algorithm (SPA) and competitive adaptive reweighted sampling (CARS). Both orientations were ideal for spectra acquisition. Regions without peach pit were ideal for modeling, and the effective wavelengths selected by the SPA led to better performance. The correlation coefficient and root mean square error of validation of the optimal models were 0.90 and 0.65%, respectively, indicating that the optimal model has potential for online prediction of peach SSC.

Global markets do not tolerate the presence of fruit fly (Tephritidae) in horticultural produce. A key method of control for tephritidae pests, is the sterile insect technique (SIT). Several countries release a bisex strain, i.e., males and females, however the sterile male is the only sex which contributes to wild population declines when released en masse. In commercial orchards, there are concerns that sterile females released as part of bisex strains, may oviposit, i.e., 'sting' and cause damage to fruit, rendering it unmarketable. Australia has released a bisex strain of sterile Queensland fruit fly, Bactrocera tryoni Froggatt, for several decades to suppress wild pest populations, particularly in peri-urban and urban environments. Here, we assessed fruit damage in two commercially grown stone fruit orchards where bisex sterile B. tryoni were released, and in an orchard that did not receive sterile flies. The number of detected stings were higher in only one SIT release orchard, compared with the control; however, there was no difference between SIT and control orchards in the number of larvae detected. We showed that there is no evidence that sterile female B. tryoni released in large numbers caused stings, or damage that led to downgraded or unsaleable fruit. The bisex strain of sterile B. tryoni is recommended for use in commercial stone-fruit orchards, under the conditions in which this trial was conducted.

It has been long recognized that fruits are healthy diet compounds as they are excellent sources of health-beneficial bioactive components (polyphenols, minerals, vitamins, organic acids, etc.). The diversification of the consumer's taste calls for an expansion of food options and novel ingredients. Puddings are a well-known food choice introduced in the human diet at a very early age because of their easy and high digestion. Four formulations with two types of starch (corn and rice) were selected as object of analysis. Nectarines were incorporated as a purée, and lyophilized powder. The nectarine variety "Gergana", used for the preparations, is a local variety with proven beneficial properties. The study aimed at analyzing the physical (moisture, ash, color, water-holding capacity, water activity, density and syneresis), textural (firmness, gumminess, cohesiveness, springiness, and chewiness), nutritional, and sensory characteristics of the nectarine-enriched puddings. The outcomes obtained from this study provided significant information about the possible application of the formulations in the children's daily menus. All four formulations had distinct peachy aroma. The formulations prepared with nectarine purée resulted in a better sensory perception about their texture, and better water-holding capacity. At this point, the formulation prepared with lyophilized fruit and rice starch has the most promising results. Sufficient evidence leads to further exploration of the perspective of fruit-enriched puddings in order to improve their technological and health-promoting properties.

The development of brown rot caused by the necrotrophic fungi Monilinia spp. in stone fruit under field and postharvest conditions depends, among others, on environmental factors. The effect of temperature and humidity are well studied but there is little information on the role of light in disease development. Herein, we studied the effect of two lighting treatments and a control condition (darkness) on: (i) several growth parameters of two Monilinia spp. (M. laxa and M. fructicola) grown in vitro and (ii) the light effect in their capacity to rot the fruit (nectarines) when exposed to the different lighting treatments. We also assessed the effect of such abiotic factors in the development of the disease on inoculated nectarines during postharvest storage. Evaluations also included testing the effect of fruit bagging on disease development as well as on ethylene production. Under in vitro conditions, lighting treatments altered colony morphology and conidiation of M. laxa but this effect was less acute in M. fructicola. Such light-induced changes under in vitro development also altered the capacity of M. laxa and M. fructicola to infect nectarines, with M. laxa becoming less virulent. The performance of Monilinia spp. exposed to treatments was also determined in vivo by inoculating four bagged or unbagged nectarine cultivars, indicating an impaired disease progression. Incidence and lesion diameter of fruit exposed to the different lighting treatments during postharvest showed that the effect of the light was intrinsic to the nectarine cultivar but also Monilinia spp. dependent. While lighting treatments reduced M. laxa incidence, they enhanced M. fructicola development. Preharvest conditions such as fruit bagging also impaired the ethylene production of inoculated fruit, which was mainly altered by M. laxa and M. fructicola, while the bag and light effects were meaningless. Thus, we provide several indications of how lighting treatments significantly alter Monilinia spp. behavior both in vitro and during the interaction with stone fruit. This study highlights the importance of modulating the lighting environment as a potential strategy to minimize brown rot development on stone fruit and to extent the shelf-life period of fruit in postharvest, market, and consumer's house.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Diabetes is a group of multifactorial disorders characterized by chronic-elevated blood glucose levels (hyperglycemia). Natural remedies are used as alternative medications to treat diabetes. Here, we tested the protective effect of the plant extracts of the Rosaceae family on improving insulin secretion and repairing the pancreatic beta cells in diabetic rats. EXPERIMENTAL APPROACH: The oligosaccharide fraction was isolated from the Rosaceae family of herbs. LC-MS/MS was applied to characterize the isolated fractions. The male Wistar rats were randomly divided into six groups, 10 each, including the control group with no intervention, diabetic rats without treatment, diabetic rats that received the extract of Malus domestica (apple), Cydonia oblonga (quince), Prunus persica (nectarine), and Prunus persica (peach), separately. Rats were monitored for the weight, fasting plasma glucose, and insulin levels. The effect of extracts in streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic rats on the pancreatic islets was evaluated by morphometric analysis. FINDINGS/RESULTS: LC-MS/MS results indicated a similar mass spectrum of isolated fractions from nectarine and peach with Rosa canina. Oral administration of nectarine and peach extracts to STZ-induced diabetic rats showed restoration of blood glucose levels to normal levels with a concomitant increase in insulin levels. Morphometric analysis of pancreatic sections revealed the increase in number, diameter, volume, and area of the pancreatic islets in the diabetic rats treated with extracts compared to the untreated diabetic rats. CONCLUSION AND IMPLICATIONS: Nectarine and peach extracts' anti-diabetic properties improved insulin secretion and pancreatic beta-cell function and subsequently led to restoring pancreatic islet mass in STZ-induced diabetic rats.

The present study was conducted to investigate pesticide residues on peach and nectarine. For method verification, samples were spiked at 0.1, 1.0, and 10.0 times of maximum residue limit (MRL) for each pesticide. The Quick-Easy-Cheap-Efficient-Rugged-Safe (QuEChERS)-liquid chromatography/tandem mass spectrometry detection revealed that limit of quantifications (LOQs) of pesticides were below the MRL. The overall recovery was 113.51% with relative standard deviation (RSD) of 17.33% for peach and 113.61% with RSD of 11.44% for nectarine. These figures were within the Directorate-General for Health and Food Safety (SANTE) recovery limits (60-140%) and the values specified for the repeatability (RSD ≤ 20%). Samples were collected from 5 different stands at Çanakkale open markets for 12 weeks. None of the residues was not ≥ MRL in any samples. Maximum levels of 567.80 and 322.10 µg/kg boscalid were detected in peach and nectarine, respectively, corresponding approximately 1/10 and 1/15 of the MRL. Maximum levels for tebuconazole were about 1/12 and 1/10 of the MRL for peach (47.53 µg/kg) and nectarine (56.90 µg/kg), respectively. Chlorpyrifos residues of all samples were below LOQ. According to our findings and the World Health Organisation Guideline, chronic exposure levels of pesticides were low and there is no risk to human health in terms of 3 pesticides.
