OBJECTIVE: The vibratory source for voicing in children with dysphonia is classified into three categories including a glottal vibratory source (GVS) observed in those with vocal lesions or hyperfunction; supraglottal vibratory sources (SGVS) observed secondary to laryngeal airway injuries, malformations, or reconstruction surgeries; and a combination of both glottal and supraglottal vibratory sources called mixed vibratory source (MVS). This study evaluated the effects of vibratory source on three primary dimensions of voice quality (breathiness, roughness, and strain) in children with GVS, SGVS, and MVS using single-variable matching tasks and computational measures obtained from bio-inspired auditory models. METHODS: A total of 44 dysphonic voice samples from children aged 4-11 years were selected. Seven listeners rated breathiness, roughness, and strain of 1000-ms /ɑ/ samples using single-variable matching tasks. Computational estimates of pitch strength, amplitude modulation filterbank output, and sharpness were obtained through custom-designed MATLAB algorithms. RESULTS: Perceived roughness and strain were significantly higher in children with SGVS and MVS compared to children with GVS. Among the computational measures, only the modulation filterbank output resulted in significant differences among vibratory sources; a posthoc test revealed that children with SGVS had greater amplitude modulation than children with GVS, as expected from their rougher voice quality. CONCLUSIONS: The results indicate that the output of an auditory amplitude modulation filterbank model may capture characteristics of SGVS that are strongly related to the rough voice quality.

Objective:To determine the effectiveness of individualized voice therapy in persistent pediatric voice disorders. Methods:Thirty-eight children who were admitted to the Department of Pediatric Otolaryngology Shenzhen Hospital, Southern Medical University due to persistent voice disorder from November 2021 to October 2022 were included. All children were evaluated by dynamic laryngoscopy before voice therapy. Two voice doctors performed GRBAS score and acoustic analysis on the children's voice samples to obtain the relevant parameters including F0, Jitter, Shimmer, and MPT; All children were given personalized voice therapy for 8 weeks. Results:Among 38 children with voice disorders, 75.8%(29 cases) were diagnosed with vocal nodules, 20.6%(8 cases) were vocal polyps, and 3.4%(1 case) were vocal cysts. And in all children. And 51.7%(20 cases) had the sign of supraglottic extrusion under dynamic laryngoscopy. GRBAS scores decreased from 1.93 ± 0.62, 1.82 ± 0.55, 0.98 ± 0.54, 0.65 ± 0.48, 1.05 ± 0.52 to 0.62 ± 0.60, 0.58 ± 0.53, 0.32 ± 0.40, 0.22 ± 0.36, 0.37 ± 0.36. F0, Jitter, Shimmer decreased from(243.11±39.73) Hz, (0.85±0.99)%, (9.96±3.78)% to(225.43±43.20) Hz, (0.33±0.57)%, (7.72±4.32)%, respectively MPT was prolonged from(5.82±2.30) s to(7.87±3.21) s after treatment. All parameters changes had statistical significance. Conclusion:Voice therapy can solve children's voice problems, improve their voice quality and effectively treat children's voice disorders.

RESUMO

The main causes of voice disorders in children with adverse vocal behavior include benign lesions of the vocal folds caused by voice abuse or misuses, such as vocal fold nodules, vocal fold polyps, and laryngitis. Long-term voice disorders can affect the physical and mental health of children. Reviewing the literature of the last two decades on "Vocal Fold Nodules," "Vocal Fold Polyp," "Voice disorder," "Voice Abuse," "Voice Misuse," "Pediatrics," and "Children" with the appropriate Boolean operators.  Conclusion: A total of 315 results were returned on an initial PubMed search. All articles from 2000 to 2022 written in English or Chinese were screened. Duplicate articles, those relating to adults only or concerned with the malignant lesion of the vocal cord, were excluded, resulting in 196 articles of interest. Relevant references and books have also been consulted, and we provide a review of the pathogenesis, diagnosis, and treatment of these maladaptive vocal behavioral voice disorders. What is Known: • Hoarseness is the most common voice symptom in children, and there are various causes of hoarseness in children. However, there is a lack of reviews on voice disorders caused by adverse vocal habits in children. • Voice training is a conservative treatment method for children with voice disorders , and it is important to clarify the factors that influence the effectiveness of voice training for children. What is New: • This review of the personality and family characteristics of children with adverse vocal behavioural voice disorders provides a valuable guide to the clinical planning of subsequent treatment. • This article discusses and summarises some of the factors that may influence the effectiveness of voice training in children and collates some of the scales and questionnaires currently used in children that are important in predicting the effectiveness of voice training.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to develop the Lithuanian version of the Pediatric Voice Handicap Index (pVHI) and to assess its psychometric characteristics. METHODS: The Lithuanian version of the pVHI was prepared according to the standard requirements for the questionnaire translation and adaptation procedure. It also included forward and backward translations of the original questionnaire, as well as a committee review and psychometric testing of the final version of the pVHI. A total of 126 children between 4 and 13 years of age were included in the study. Two study groups were formed: a group consisting of children with dysphonia (n = 70) and a control group of children without any alterations in their voice (n = 56). The questionnaire was always completed by their parents. The results were statistically analysed to assess the reliability, validity, sensitivity and specificity of the Lithuanian version of the pVHI. RESULTS: High internal consistency of the Lithuanian version of the pVHI was determined (Cronbach's α = 0.938). The test-retest analysis also showed a high correlation between the two tests (r = 0.949) for both the dysphonic and control groups. The mean overall pVHI score was significantly higher (P < 0.001) in the dysphonic group than in the control group: 26.16 ± 11.84 and 2.43 ± 2.61, respectively. Similar results were obtained for all domains of pVHI. The most sensitive and specific limiting value for discrimination between the clinical and control groups was the sum of 8 points. CONCLUSIONS: The Lithuanian version of the pVHI is a reliable and valid instrument for the evaluation of the Voice Handicap Index in the pediatric population and can be easily applied in daily clinical practice.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to describe the laryngeal anatomy, perceptual, acoustic, and aerodynamic vocal characteristics of school-aged children with and without Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). The predisposition that children with ADHD have for laryngeal injuries are recurrent in nature and are more often than not overlooked as laryngitis. Previous studies have reported varied results on the prevalence rates of pediatric vocal fold nodules within the school-aged ADHD population. STUDY DESIGN: A static, two-group comparison was used in the study to investigate the clinical, perceptual, acoustic, and aerodynamic vocal characteristics of children between 7 and 9 years old with and without ADHD. METHODS: The study replicated the protocol as executed by Barona-Lleo and Fernandez (2016) with additions. The Multidimensional Voice Program and the Voice Range Profile as additions to the assessment of vocal parameters were used with which comparable dysphonia severity index scores were calculated. Once-off clinical, perceptual, acoustic, and aerodynamic voice assessments were conducted on 20 age-gender matched participants (Control group mean age [months] = 98.80, standard deviation = 10.379; ADHD group mean age [months] = 108.00, standard deviation = 10.873). It was hypothesized that children with ADHD would have more hyperfunctional vocal characteristics; leading to laryngeal injuries, than their control group peers. RESULTS: Forty-five percent (n = 9) of the total sample population (both groups combined) had laryngeal pathology. Similar parent reported etiological voice symptoms and vocal habits were seen across both groups. Both groups performed similarly across both perceptual and aerodynamic voice assessments. Acoustically, the control group achieved significantly higher producible pitches than the ADHD group (P = 0.028) and were found to have more dysphonic dysphonia severity index scores than their ADHD group peers (P = 0.034). CONCLUSION: Prepubertal, school-aged children with or without ADHD may have similar vocal characteristics than previously thought. This is in support of the null hypothesis. The authors of the current study recommend that vocal screening in all school-aged children be carried out as an effective measure to monitor voice disorders in the pediatric population. Future research into larger sample sizes with this population with a special focus on the effect that central nervous system stimulants may have on the voice is recommended.

OBJECTIVES: Childhood voice disorders have increased in recent years reduce not only communication of the child, but also; the quality of life by affecting the socio-emotional state. METHODS: In the study, it is aimed to test validity and reliability of Pediatric Voice Related Quality of Life Survey (PVRQOL)'s Turkish adaptation. A total of 223 individuals aged between 2 years and 18 years, with and without voice problems were involved in this study. RESULTS: Statistically significant differences were found between study and control groups for total score and sub domain scores for PVRQOL (p < 0,001). Total score of quality of life was higher in the control group. Cronbach alpha coefficient for overall PVRQOL was 0,922; dimension of physical function was 0,894 and socio-emotional domain was 0,804. In the test-retest reliability test, overall PVRQOL was found to be 0,732; physical functional sub domain was 0,734; socio-emotional sub domain was 0,721. The validity of the questionnaire was determined by factor analysis. CONCLUSION: The results suggest that the Turkish version of the PVRQOL has reliability and validity, and may play a crucial role in evaluating children with voice disorders.

PURPOSE: To investigate the attitudes of school teachers toward children with voice problems in a Chinese population. METHOD: Three groups of listeners participated in this study: primary school teachers, speech-language pathology students, and general university students. The participants were required to make attitude judgments on 12 voice samples using a semantic differential scale with 22 bipolar adjective pairs. The voice samples were collected from 6 children with healthy voices and 6 children with dysphonia. The 22 bipolar adjective pairs were intended to cover nonspeech characteristics about the child's personality, social characteristics, and physical appearance. RESULTS: The mean attitude ratings received by children with dysphonic voice were significantly lower (i.e., less favorable) than those received by children with healthy voices in all of the 22 adjective pairs (all ps < .002). The attitude ratings made by the 3 groups of listeners were not significantly different from one another ( ps > .05). CONCLUSION: To our knowledge, this is the first study in which the authors examine listeners' perception toward children with voice problems in the Chinese population. The results suggest that voice problems in children warrant attention, and their effects on the child should not be underestimated. The findings also highlight the importance of early identification and intervention for children with voice problems.
