PURPOSE: Preliminary studies have suggested that women are responsive to using technology to manage their health, due to its discreet, convenient, and cost-effective nature. Yet, there are limited mobile health (mHealth) apps specific to women's needs, particularly those on probation. The purpose of this study was to explore features of 2 existing mHealth applications related to sexual health and safety, specific to interpersonal and sexual violence, to answer research questions related to the usability, barriers, and facilitators of mHealth app use for women on probation. SUBJECTS: We purposefully sampled from a local adult probation site and utilized snow-ball sampling to recruit 11 women who were on probation and owned iPhones. METHODS: We conducted an exploratory intervention development study using a qualitative design. Social Cognitive Theory was used for data synthesize and organization. FINDINGS: Three themes emerged: (1) It made me take time for myself; (2) It helped me to be more respectful of my body; (3) The connectivity….that was helpful. MAJOR IMPLICATIONS: Participants expressed mHealth apps to be usable, feasible, accessible and promoted self-efficacy by allowing them track symptoms and patterns of behavior specific to health and safety in a discreet, convenient, and effective manner. This research suggests that a culturally tailored mHealth app may be an appropriate intervention to provide timely gender-responsive feedback, resources, and health care to women on probation.

Reflective practice (RP) is a core component of infant mental health (IMH); however, there is limited published empirical research on IMH practitioner experiences of RP. This two-stage, qualitative, multimodal study explored Irish IMH practitioners' experiences of RP spaces. Visual and verbal data from seven individual interviews and a participatory arts-based focus group with seven participants (eight participants in total, all white Irish females) were analyzed using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis. Five group experiential themes (Just get on with it; What should I be bringing to this space?; Who are my "hands"?; Taking a step back; and You go in heavy and you come out light) were generated by the analysis. These were used to construct a developmental and experiential model of learning in an RP space. The themes portray how a practitioner's RP experience can change over time: influenced by prior experiences and practice development stage, practitioners move from initial uncertainty, anxiety, and perceived pressure in a busy workload to developing the trust and ability to be vulnerable in an RP space. Through relationships (supervisor/facilitator or group members), a shared safe space can be created, which addresses practitioners' needs for containment, allowing for experiential learning through a process of transformational moments.


La práctica con reflexión (RP) es un componente central de la salud mental infantil (IMH), sin embargo, existe una limitada investigación empírica publicada sobre las experiencias de RP de los profesionales de la práctica de IMH. Este estudio multimodal, cualitativo, en dos etapas, exploró las experiencias de los espacios de RP de profesionales irlandeses en la práctica de IMH. Se analizó la información visual y verbal de siete entrevistas individuales y un grupo de enfoque participativo con base artística de siete participantes (ocho participantes en total, todas mujeres blancas irlandesas) usando el Análisis Fenomenológico Interpretativo. El análisis generó cinco temas de la experiencia de grupo (Manos a la obra; ¿Qué debo aportar a este espacio?; ¿Quiénes son mis 'manos'?; Dar un paso atrás; y Se comienza pesado y se termina liviano). OBJECTIVE: To develop an interview-based rating method for assessing therapists' beneficial character traits and evaluate its reliability and validity. METHOD: The semi-structured Psychotherapist Character Virtues (PCV) interview and evaluation method, based on Erik Erikson's and Heinz Kohut's writings on 16 virtues or abilities and achievements of an adult self, was administered to 68 psychodynamic and solution-focused therapists. Inter-rater reliability was assessed based on 20 videorecorded interviews, rated by two evaluators. In a mixed-methods design, validity was investigated against (i) therapist's questionnaire-based self-reported professional and personal background characteristics and (ii) a qualitative content analysis of emotional atmosphere in the interview. RESULTS: Interrater reliability for individual 16 virtues was acceptable (median correlation .72). From individual virtues, three principal components (Creative Will, Empathy, and Love/Care) emerged with good/excellent internal consistency (component determinacies .95, .85, and .90, respectively) and criterion validity with self-reported professional and personal characteristics. Cluster analysis of therapists' component scores yielded six different therapist character profiles. In qualitative analysis, character profiles meaningfully differed in their impact on the interview's emotional atmosphere. CONCLUSION: PCV appears promising for evaluating therapists' character virtues, posited to undergird therapists' sensitive attunement and responsiveness. Further research is needed on PCV's predictive validity for therapeutic relationships and outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Medical students view clinical workplace placements as an inspiring and motivating learning environment where active student participation is pivotal to development of students' identity. The progress from pre-clerkship to clerkship education harbors many challenges which consist of experiential learning, adjusting to the clinical environment, and understanding roles & responsibilities. Workplace learning is underpinned by various adult learning theories including social theories,constructivism, supported participation and legitimate peripheral participation. Workplace learning course was recently initiated for pre-clerkship students at a medical university in UAE, which will enable their smooth entry into the clerkship phase of the curriculum. OBJECTIVES: The research aims to explore students' perceptions of various domains of their clinical learning environment (CLE), highlight the challenges they face, and extract valuable feedback to improve their environment. METHODS: This study was conducted qualitatively by using focus groups method in order to explore students' perceptions of the clinical learning environment. Two focus group discussions were conducted (n = 8 +/-10) to determine the common challenges of workplace learning and its potential solutions. Data were analyzed using thematic analysis. The approach used to carry out this study was phenomenology, as it helps to understand the learning and behavior of these students who are undergoing this pre-clerkship training in order to transition smoothly to the clerkship phase. RESULT: The focus groups helped to deeply explore the perceptions of students about their clinical learning environment. It helped to reveal the challenges encountered by the students including the significance of proper orientation of staff and students, language barrier, availability of learning opportunities, and supervision quality. The focus groups provided worthwhile suggestions to improve the learning opportunities in the clinical learning environment which include orientation of the staff and students what to expect, improved supervision, mentoring and providing learning opportunities to encourage participation. CONCLUSION: This study attempted to identify the pre-clerkship students' perception of their clinical learning environment and the challenges they face over there. Possible suggestions by the students included a formal orientation for the staff and students to be carried out at the beginning. Efforts should be made by clerkship directors to provide students with learning opportunities by increasing patient exposure, encouraging participation, and providing high-quality supervision.

Introduction: The objective of this study is to assess the influence of staggered boards on corporate financialization and the role that incentive and supervision mechanisms play in this process. Methods: We employ a total of 20,647 panel data samples of Chinese A-share listed companies over the period 2011-2020 to empirically test the impact of staggered boards on corporate financialization in the Chinese context. Results: The results indicate that implementing staggered boards significantly increases levels of corporate financialization. On the one hand, the implementation of a staggered board structure can exacerbate the speculative mindset and profit-driven behavior among board members, leading management to prioritize financial investments for personal gain. On the other hand, a staggered board system may also amplify managerial laziness, potentially incentivizing them to rely heavily on financial investments in order to swiftly achieve performance targets with minimal effort. Furthermore, both managerial ownership and audit supervision are found to be critical factors in mitigating this positive impact and preventing excessive financial investment behavior. Discussion: This paper offers guidance on comprehending the applicability of staggered board provisions and mitigating financial risks in enterprises.

The educational and clinical effects of the process of case writing during analytic training have not been extensively studied, even though the case report, as a product, has prompted attempts to make it a more revealing and accurate document. Countertransference experiences during an analysis can constrain both the candidate's writing and the analytic work, while examining them during the writing process can deepen the candidate's analytic work. Three overlapping resistances to the writing, and their underlying anxieties, are described. These are publication resistances: concerns about the anticipated reception of the candidate's work by potentially critical readers; transference resistances: feelings toward the analytic institute that requires the writing; and countertransference or reimmersion resistances: fears of reawakening reactions from the analysis. These can interfere with finding a safe internal space in which to write. Examples are given of writing through of these resistances during case supervision, resulting in more open writing and in a deepening of the analytic work. As the case writing process can have direct and potentially profound effects on the candidate's current and future analytic work, it is proposed that the process of case writing is a fourth pillar of analytic training, in addition to the candidate's personal analysis, case supervision, and didactic seminars.

BACKGROUND: Writing a bachelor thesis has a central role in nursing education. Nursing students require both information and academic literacy in order to write their theses, and there is an expectation that these skills will contribute to putting their knowledge into practice. OBJECTIVES: To describe students' perceptions of the student and supervisor roles and to investigate students' experienced self-efficacy during the supervision of their bachelor thesis. DESIGN: A cross-sectional pre-post design. SETTINGS: Four universities were included. All four had bachelor thesis courses organized as a group supervision process, with a student active approach. Nursing students met together one hour prior to meeting with their supervisor, in order to discuss concerns, try to solve upcoming problems, and plan the agenda for the upcoming supervision session. PARTICIPANTS: A total of 472 undergraduate nursing students were invited to participate. METHODS: A web-based questionnaire was used, incorporating the Supervision of Thesis Questionnaire and the General Self-Efficacy Scale. Data were collected at two points: before and after the thesis course. Descriptive statistics and frequencies were calculated, and the independent t-test and Mann-Whitney U test were used for analytic analysis. RESULTS: The response rate was 39 % (160/472) pre-course and 28 % (130/472) post-course. Nursing students had high expectations of supervision at both time points. Students reporting high self-efficacy had higher expectations of the supervisor's knowledge of the subject and the methods, compared to those reporting lower self-efficacy. CONCLUSIONS: Nursing students reported high expectations for the supervision process, the supervisor, and themselves, both when entering and when ending the bachelor thesis course. Self-efficacy may contribute to these expectations. Active learning in a group (i.e., collaborative learning) may contribute to nursing students' commitment during the group supervision process in a bachelor thesis course. Further studies are warranted on the optimal group composition to support learning during bachelor thesis courses.

Advancements in clinical treatment are increasingly constrained by the limitations of supervised learning techniques, which depend heavily on large volumes of annotated data. The annotation process is not only costly but also demands substantial time from clinical specialists. Addressing this issue, we introduce the S4MI (Self-Supervision and Semi-Supervision for Medical Imaging) pipeline, a novel approach that leverages advancements in self-supervised and semi-supervised learning. These techniques engage in auxiliary tasks that do not require labeling, thus simplifying the scaling of machine supervision compared to fully-supervised methods. Our study benchmarks these techniques on three distinct medical imaging datasets to evaluate their effectiveness in classification and segmentation tasks. Notably, we observed that self-supervised learning significantly surpassed the performance of supervised methods in the classification of all evaluated datasets. Remarkably, the semi-supervised approach demonstrated superior outcomes in segmentation, outperforming fully-supervised methods while using 50% fewer labels across all datasets. In line with our commitment to contributing to the scientific community, we have made the S4MI code openly accessible, allowing for broader application and further development of these methods. Arterial blood pressure (ABP) serves as a pivotal clinical metric in cardiovascular health assessments, with the precise forecasting of continuous blood pressure assuming a critical role in both preventing and treating cardiovascular diseases. This study proposes a novel continuous non-invasive blood pressure prediction model, DSRUnet, based on deep sparse residual U-net combined with improved SE skip connections, which aim to enhance the accuracy of using photoplethysmography (PPG) signals for continuous blood pressure prediction. The model first introduces a sparse residual connection approach for path contraction and expansion, facilitating richer information fusion and feature expansion to better capture subtle variations in the original PPG signals, thereby enhancing the network's representational capacity and predictive performance and mitigating potential degradation in the network performance. Furthermore, an enhanced SE-GRU module was embedded in the skip connections to model and weight global information using an attention mechanism, capturing the temporal features of the PPG pulse signals through GRU layers to improve the quality of the transferred feature information and reduce redundant feature learning. Finally, a deep supervision mechanism was incorporated into the decoder module to guide the lower-level network to learn effective feature representations, alleviating the problem of gradient vanishing and facilitating effective training of the network. The proposed DSRUnet model was trained and tested on the publicly available UCI-BP dataset, with the average absolute errors for predicting systolic blood pressure (SBP), diastolic blood pressure (DBP), and mean blood pressure (MBP) being 3.36 ± 6.61 mmHg, 2.35 ± 4.54 mmHg, and 2.21 ± 4.36 mmHg, respectively, meeting the standards set by the Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation (AAMI), and achieving Grade A according to the British Hypertension Society (BHS) Standard for SBP and DBP predictions. Through ablation experiments and comparisons with other state-of-the-art methods, the effectiveness of DSRUnet in blood pressure prediction tasks, particularly for SBP, which generally yields poor prediction results, was significantly higher. The experimental results demonstrate that the DSRUnet model can accurately utilize PPG signals for real-time continuous blood pressure prediction and obtain high-quality and high-precision blood pressure prediction waveforms. Due to its non-invasiveness, continuity, and clinical relevance, the model may have significant implications for clinical applications in hospitals and research on wearable devices in daily life.

Background: Clinical supervision involves the professional relationship between an experienced and knowledgeable clinician and a less experienced clinician in which the experienced clinician provides support toward the skills development of the less experienced one. The concept, structure, and format of clinical supervision vary in various jurisdictions and is influenced by the availability of resources, the training needs of supervisees, and organizational structures. Aim: The aim of this scoping review was to explore, map out and synthesize the available literature on the facilitators and barriers to clinical supervision in Ghana. Methods: The methodological framework developed by Arksey and O'Malley and modified by Levac et al. for scoping reviews, and the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses extension for Scoping Reviews were used to ensure a coherent and transparent reporting of literature. A systematic search was conducted in PubMed, CINAHL, Scopus, Medline, and Google Scholar using key words and key terms. Articles published between January 1, 2000, and February 28, 2023, were included in the review. Results: The initial search across all the databases yielded 208 results. Two independent reviewers completed both the title and abstract, and full text screenings. A third reviewer helped to resolve all discrepancies that arose during the screening process. The review included 20 articles and generated four themes: clinical supervision as a collaborative effort, feedback mechanism, training and adaptation, and challenges with implementation. Conclusion: Findings from this review highlight that healthcare professionals in Ghana valued clinical supervision. However, the implementation of clinical supervision is faced with individual and systemic challenges. There is the need for on-going collaboration between educational and clinical institutions to develop modalities that promote clinical supervision in Ghana.

California like many other states is facing a severe shortage of primary care physicians and access to primary care is uneven across the state. It is well documented that California has the highest number of designated primary care health professional shortage areas in the country. Although physician assistants (PAs) and nurse practitioners (NPs) are estimated to make up a large portion of California's primary care workforce by 2030, outdated and unnecessary statutory requirements such as the physician-to-PA supervision ratio requirement represent a practice barrier in expanding access to care. Other states have either eliminated or revised their physician-to-PA supervision ratios in favor of expanding access to health care services. Therefore, this editorial represents a call for coordinated actions from local and state entities to address California's outdated physician-to-PA supervision ratio requirement. NPs are mentioned briefly as they have achieved a pathway to full practice authority in California.

General movement and pose assessment of infants is crucial for the early detection of cerebral palsy (CP). Nevertheless, most human pose estimation methods, in 2D or 3D, focus on adults due to the lack of large datasets and pose annotations on infants. To solve these problems, here we present a model known as YOLO-infantPose, which has been fine-tuned, for infant pose estimation in 2D. We further propose a self-supervised model called STAPose3D for 3D infant pose estimation based on videos. We employ multi-view video data during the training process as a strategy to address the challenge posed by the absence of 3D pose annotations. STAPose3D combines temporal convolution, temporal attention, and graph attention to jointly learn spatio-temporal features of infant pose. Our methods are summarized into two stages: applying YOLO-infantPose on input videos, followed by lifting these 2D poses along with respective confidences for every joint to 3D. The employment of the best-performing 2D detector in the first stage significantly improves the precision of 3D pose estimation. We reveal that fine-tuned YOLO-infantPose outperforms other models tested on our clinical dataset as well as two public datasets MINI-RGBD and YouTube-Infant dataset. Results from our infant movement video dataset demonstrate that STAPose3D effectively comprehends the spatio-temporal features among different views and significantly improves the performance of 3D infant pose estimation in videos. Finally, we explore the clinical application of our method for general movement assessment (GMA) in a clinical dataset annotated as normal writhing movements or abnormal monotonic movements according to the GMA standards. We show that the 3D pose estimation results produced by our STAPose3D model significantly boost the GMA prediction performance than 2D pose estimation. Accurate training labels are a key component for multi-class medical image segmentation. Their annotation is costly and time-consuming because it requires domain expertise. In our previous work, a dual-branch network was developed to segment single-class edematous adipose tissue. Its inputs include a few strong labels from manual annotation and many inaccurate weak labels from existing segmentation methods. The dual-branch network consists of a shared encoder and two decoders to process weak and strong labels. Self-supervision iteratively updates weak labels during the training process. This work aims to follow this strategy and automatically improve training labels for multi-class image segmentation. Instead of using weak and strong labels to only train the network once in the previous work, transfer learning is used to train the network and improve weak labels sequentially. The dual-branch network is first trained by weak labels alone to initialize model parameters. After the network is stabilized, the shared encoder is frozen, and strong and weak decoders are fine-tuned by strong and weak labels together. The accuracy of weak labels is iteratively improved in the fine-tuning process. The proposed method was applied to a three-class segmentation of muscle, subcutaneous and visceral adipose tissue on abdominal CT scans. Validation results on 11 patients showed that the accuracy of training labels was statistically significantly improved, with the Dice similarity coefficient of muscle, subcutaneous and visceral adipose tissue increased from 74.2% to 91.5%, 91.2% to 95.6%, and 77.6% to 88.5%, respectively (p<0.05). In comparison with our earlier method, the label accuracy was also significantly improved (p<0.05). These experimental results suggested that the combination of the dual-branch network and transfer learning is an efficient means to improve training labels for multi-class segmentation.

Within the health professions education system, a significant proportion of teaching and learning occurs in the clinical setting. As such, the need to measure effective teaching for accreditation standards, faculty development, merit pay, academic promotion, and for monitoring the safety of the learning environment has led to numerous universities developing instruments to evaluate teaching effectiveness in this context. To date; however, these instruments typically focus on the student perspective, despite evidence demonstrating that student evaluations of teaching (SETs) lack correlation with learning outcomes and are not a true measure of teaching effectiveness. This issue is further exacerbated in small health professional training programs, such as genetic counseling, where clinical teachers may only supervise 1-3 students per year. As a result, not only are SETs more confounded due to small sample sizes, but a direct conflict exists between respecting learner anonymity and providing timely and relevant feedback to faculty. In such contexts, even using SETs to evaluate the nature of the learning environment may be unreliable due to student concerns about identifiability and fear of retaliation for unfavorable evaluation. This paper will review the literature regarding SETs, barriers to this process within the clinical setting, and the unintended downstream consequences. Options for addressing issues related to the use of SETs will be considered, with particular focus on the process of reflection and the use of teaching consultations or peer support groups as a means to improve teaching effectiveness in this learning environment.

Due to the intra-class diversity of mitotic cells and the morphological overlap with similarly looking imposters, automatic mitosis detection in histopathology slides is still a challenging task. In this paper, we propose a novel mitosis detection model in a weakly supervised way, which consists of a candidate proposal network and a verification network. The candidate proposal network based on patch learning aims to separate both mitotic cells and their mimics from the background as candidate objects, which substantially reduces missed detections in the screening process of candidates. These obtained candidate results are then fed into the verification network for mitosis refinement. The verification network adopts an RBF-based subcategorization scheme to deal with the problems of high intra-class variability of mitosis and the mimics with similar appearance. We utilize the RBF centers to define subcategories containing mitotic cells with similar properties and capture representative RBF center locations through joint training of classification and clustering. Due to the lower intra-class variation within a subcategory, the localized feature space at subcategory level can better characterize a certain type of mitotic figures and can provide a better similarity measurement for distinguishing mitotic cells from nonmitotic cells. Our experiments manifest that this subcategorization scheme helps improve the performance of mitosis detection and achieves state-of-the-art results on the publicly available mitosis datasets using only weak labels.

Receiving a diagnosis of cancer and receiving treatment can be physically and psychologically onerous for cancer patients. Alongside their nursing skills, cancer clinical nurse specialists (CCNSs) are trained to provide psychological support, assessment and intervention following a cancer diagnosis. Mental health specialists, usually clinical psychologists, provide clinical supervision to CCNSs to support them with this. One of the regular themes that comes up in clinical supervision with CCNSs is how to maintain a supportive and therapeutic relationship with 'challenging' patients. These patients may be considered challenging because they are inconsistent, demanding or ambivalent about their care, which puts a strain on the relationship with their CCNS. By using the emotional seesaw model to reflect on and attend to the emotional boundaries of the relationship, within clinical supervision, these challenging relationships can be understood and managed, and better outcomes for the patient can be achieved.

Previous literature has focused on either individual models of supervision, developing trainees' interprofessional competencies, or on developing and maintaining interprofessional relationships outside of training. For psychologists in medical settings, these concepts are inextricably linked, and supervision must combine these professional practices to successfully meet the needs of psychology trainees, patients, and interprofessional colleagues, in an increasingly integrated healthcare landscape. This paper presents a model for advancing interprofessional collaborative practice competencies in supervision as health psychology trainees progress through the developmental stages of clinical competency, while supervising psychologists also maintain interprofessional relationships. The Interprofessional Collaboration Supervision Model (IPCSM)for Psychology describes trainee, patient, and interprofessional team factors for supervising psychologists to consider in supervision, as well as various interventions to deploy when these interrelated dynamics impact training. Case examples are provided along with discussion on how to implement this model in supervision.

Background: Due to the expanding coverage of medical insurance and the growth of medical expenses, the ability to assess the performance of designated medical institutions (DMIs) in supporting the delivery of high-quality patient care and the standardized use of funds represents a priority in China. Despite such interest, there has yet to be an operable standard and labor-saving method for assessing DMIs in China. Objective: The main objectives include two aspects: (1) establishing an evaluation index system for DMIs based on contracts; (2) designing and developing an online evaluation platform. Methods: A group of 20 experts with theoretical and practical expertise in medical insurance regulation and performance evaluation were invited to select available indicators. A combination weighting method based on analytic hierarchy process and entropy method was used to determine the weight coefficient. Shanghai was taken as the sample area, and 760 DMIs were included in the empirical research. The test-retest reliability method and criterion-related validity method was used to test the reliability and the validity of the evaluation result. Results: An assessment index system that included 6 domains and 56 indicators was established in this study. Furthermore, we developed an online platform to assist in the implementation of the assessment. The results showed that the average score of assessment was 94.39, the median was 96.92. The test-retest reliability value was 0.96 (P ≤ 0.01), which indicated high stability of the assessment. In addition, there was a significant negative relationship between assessment score and the penalty amount of DMIs (R = -0.133, P < 0.001). After adjusting for the basic characteristics of medical institutions, the number of visits and revenue, the negative relationship was still significant (B = -0.080, P < 0.05). These results are consistent with expectations, indicating that the assessment had good criterion-related validity. Conclusions: This study established an operable assessment measure and developed an online platform to assess the performance of DMIs. The results showed good feasibility and reliability in empirical research. Our research findings provided an operable Chinese solution for DMI assessment that saves manpower and time, which would have good enlightening significance in other regions of China and in low-income and middle-income countries internationally.

INTRODUCTION: Healthcare practitioners delivering services in rural and underserved areas need timely access to appropriate knowledge to optimise the care they deliver. Novice generalist occupational therapists in South Africa experience this need as they respond to a high demand for hand therapy. Embedded within a study aimed at identifying their support and development needs, this article describes participants' experience of a virtual community of practice. METHODS: A qualitative case study design was employed. Nine occupational therapists participated in a virtual community of practice that met fortnightly for meetings and interacted on WhatsApp. Data were collected through photo elicitation, facilitated reflection, and case discussions. An online survey questionnaire was used to evaluate participants' experience of this virtual community. Thematic analysis was applied to the anonymous responses submitted by participants (n=7). A number of strategies were employed to ensure the trustworthiness of results including prolonged engagement, member checking, peer examination, reflexive reading and writing, triangulation, and a dense description of participants to enable readers to evaluate the transferability of results. RESULTS: Three themes were generated from analysis. The first theme, versatile support, describes participants' experience of being helped and supported, appreciating the immediacy of support, and being able to share resources. A vehicle for learning captures participants' experience of mutual learning, opportunity to reflect, to acquire knowledge and skills, and develop their clinical reasoning. Finally, the community of practice was grounding: learning opportunities were contextually relevant and participants were able to consolidate their professional values and identity. Participants raised the importance of using online platforms that were accessible, recommended a group size of 5-10 members, and proposed 60-90-minute meetings held weekly or fortnightly. CONCLUSION: A virtual community of practice provided both support and professional development opportunities for therapists delivering hand therapy. Careful planning and implementation to upscale this intervention are recommended for rehabilitation personnel delivering care to underserved communities in South Africa. The logistics of virtual communities need to mitigate for connectivity difficulties, and online platforms should enable real-time support. Participant satisfaction and the evaluation of implementation outcomes should be considered in the design of virtual communities of practice.

OBJECTIVES: Research suggests that cross-cultural supervision can be prone to microaggressions with deleterious effects for ethno-racial minorities. There are currently no known studies examining the impact of racial microaggressions in supervision on qualified psychologists. This study aimed to explore Black psychologists' experiences of microaggressions in supervision with a White supervisor and their impact. METHODS: Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 10 individuals who had completed clinical or counselling psychology doctoral training. Interviews were transcribed and analysed using interpretative phenomenological analysis. RESULTS: Three superordinate themes and 12 subthemes were derived from the analysis. The superordinate themes were: 'It's the subtle things', 'It's an ordeal' and 'Surviving Whiteness in psychology'. The findings illustrate the complex nature of racial microaggressions and their profound and lasting impact on individuals. The cumulative impact of these experiences resulted in significant negative psychological outcomes. CONCLUSIONS: The results suggest that there are common microaggressions that recur in supervision. Encountering microaggressions impeded the supervisory relationship, supervision and professional development. Clinical implications include recommendations for including multicultural competency in psychology trainings and ongoing professional development plans.
