RESUMO

Antibiotic resistance crisis dictates the need for resistance monitoring and the search for new antibiotics. The development of monitoring protocols is hindered by the great diversity of resistance factors, while the "streetlight effect" denies the possibility of discovering novel drugs based on existing databases. In this study, we address these challenges using high-throughput environmental screening viewed from a trait-based ecological perspective. Through an in-depth analysis of the metagenomes of 658 topsoil samples spanning Europe, we explored the distribution of 241 prokaryotic and fungal genes responsible for producing metabolites with antibiotic properties and 485 antibiotic resistance genes. We analyzed the diversity of these gene collections at different levels and modeled the distribution of each gene across environmental gradients. Our analyses revealed several nonparallel distribution patterns of the genes encoding sequential steps of enzymatic pathways synthesizing large antibiotic groups, pointing to gaps in existing databases and suggesting potential for discovering new analogues of known antibiotics. We show that agricultural activity caused a continental-scale homogenization of microbial antibiotic-related machinery, emphasizing the importance of maintaining indigenous ecosystems within the landscape mosaic. Based on the relationships between the proportion of the genes in the metagenomes with the main predictors (soil pH, land cover type, climate temperature and humidity), we illustrate how the properties of chemical structures dictate the distribution of the genes responsible for their synthesis across environments. With this understanding, we propose general principles to facilitate the discovery of antibiotics, including principally new ones, establish abundance baselines for antibiotic resistance genes, and predict their dissemination.

BACKGROUND: The reactive aggressive behavior in individuals typically shows a rapid growth trend as individuals enter adolescence, and peaks during middle-school period. According to the Comprehensive Cognitive Model of Trait Anger, trait anger and hostile attribution bias play important roles in the development of reactive aggressive behavior. Based on this, current study explored the relationship between trait anger and reactive aggressive behavior in middle school students, as well as the mediating role of hostile attribution bias and interventions. METHODS: The current study consisted of three sub-studies. Study 1 recruited 87 middle school students with an average age of 12.367 ± 0.889 years, investigated the relationship between trait anger and reactive aggressive behavior, as well as the mediating role of trait hostile attribution bias. Study 2 recruited 62 middle school students with an average age of 13.376 ± 0.963 years, investigated the relationship between trait anger and reactive aggressive behavior, as well as the mediating role of state hostile attribution bias. Study 3 recruited 80 middle school students with an average age of 13.392 ± 0.977 years, implemented an intervention targeting trait hostile attribution bias in middle school students with high trait anger to reduce their reactive aggressive behavior. In current study, data management was performed using SPSS 22.0. Descriptive statistics, independent samples t-test, paired samples t-test, repeated measures analysis of variance (ANOVA), and path analysis were used for statistical analysis. FINDINGS: The results of Study 1 showed that trait anger predicted reactive aggressive behavior through trait hostile attribution bias. The results of Study 2 indicated that trait and state hostile attribution bias played mediating role intermediary, and trait hostile attribution bias had a stronger mediating effect than state hostile attribution bias. The results of Study 3 suggested that the intervention effectively decreased trait hostile attribution bias and reactive aggressive behavior. CONCLUSIONS: Trait anger can predict the reactive aggressive behavior of junior high school students, with trait hostility attribution bias and state hostility attribution bias mediating this relationship. Intervening in the hostility attribution bias of high-anger junior high school students can effectively reduce their reactive aggressive behavior.

Through genome-wide association studies (GWAS) and integrated expression quantitative trait locus (eQTL) analyses, numerous susceptibility genes ("eGenes", whose expressions are significantly associated with common variants) associated with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) have been identified. Notably, a subset of these eGenes is correlated with disease activity. However, the precise mechanisms through which these genes contribute to the initiation and progression of the disease remain to be fully elucidated. In this investigation, we initially identify SPATS2L as an SLE eGene correlated with disease activity. eSignaling and transcriptomic analyses suggest its involvement in the type I interferon (IFN) pathway. We observe a significant increase in SPATS2L expression following type I IFN stimulation, and the expression levels are dependent on both the concentration and duration of stimulation. Furthermore, through dual-luciferase reporter assays, western blot analysis, and imaging flow cytometry, we confirm that SPATS2L positively modulates the type I IFN pathway, acting as a positive feedback regulator. Notably, siRNA-mediated intervention targeting SPATS2L, an interferon-inducible gene, in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) from patients with SLE reverses the activation of the interferon pathway. In conclusion, our research highlights the pivotal role of SPATS2L as a positive-feedback regulatory molecule within the type I IFN pathway. Our findings suggest that SPATS2L plays a critical role in the onset and progression of SLE and may serve as a promising target for disease activity assessment and intervention strategies.

Selecting and breeding rice cultivars that enable strong cadmium (Cd) accumulation in rice straw but low accumulation in brown rice is a promising way to achieve Cd phytoremediation as well as to ensure the food safety of rice. Herein, we isolated a gene OsWNK9 from the quantitative trait locus associated with reducing Cd translocation from rice straw to brown rice and decreasing the Cd concentration in brown rice (BRCdC). Continuous strong expression of OsWNK9 was observed in nodes and internode and was induced after Cd supply. OsWNK9 was localized in the rice cell nucleus and participated in the regulation of Cd transport in yeast. Two independent oswnk9 rice mutants were generated via CRISPR/Cas9 gene-editing and showed significantly higher BRCdC than that of the wild type (WT). The BRCdC of knockout oswnk9 mutants was 0.227 mg kg-1and 0.238 mg kg-1, increased by 14 % and 19 % compared with that of the WT due to the lower Cd allocation in the basal stem, internode, and node III, which was unrelated to Cd uptake. Interestingly, OsWNK9 could promote iron (Fe) accumulation in rice under Cd-contaminated conditions, suggesting that OsWNK9 is an ideal gene for Cd phytoremediation and Fe biofortification in rice to support safe food production.

Osteoid osteoma is a benign bone tumor that typically presents with nocturnal pain alleviated by nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications. The coexistence of osteoid osteoma with sickle cell anemia, a hereditary hemoglobinopathy characterized by vaso-occlusive crises and bone infarcts, poses diagnostic and therapeutic challenges due to overlapping clinical and radiological features. This condition primarily involves the long bones of the lower extremities, particularly the femur and tibia. Despite its benign nature, osteoid osteoma can significantly impact a patient's quality of life due to persistent and intense pain, often leading to substantial sleep disturbances and functional limitations.

Adaptive radiation involves diversification along multiple trait axes, producing phenotypically diverse, species-rich lineages. Theory generally predicts that multi-trait evolution occurs via a 'stages' model, with some traits saturating early in a lineage's history, and others diversifying later. Despite its multidimensional nature, however, we know surprisingly little about how different suites of traits evolve during adaptive radiation. Here, we investigated the rate, pattern, and timing of morphological and physiological evolution in the anole lizard adaptive radiation from the Caribbean island of Hispaniola. Rates and patterns of morphological and physiological diversity are largely unaligned, corresponding to independent selective pressures associated with structural and thermal niches. Cold tolerance evolution reflects parapatric divergence across elevation, rather than niche partitioning within communities. Heat tolerance evolution and the preferred temperature evolve more slowly than cold tolerance, reflecting behavioral buffering, particularly in edge-habitat species (a pattern associated with the Bogert effect). In contrast to the nearby island of Puerto Rico, closely related anoles on Hispaniola do not sympatrically partition thermal niche space. Instead, allopatric and parapatric separation across biogeographic and environmental boundaries serves to keep morphologically similar close relatives apart. The phenotypic diversity of this island's adaptive radiation accumulated largely as a by-product of time, with surprisingly few exceptional pulses of trait evolution. A better understanding of the processes that guide multidimensional trait evolution (and nuance therein) will prove key in determining whether the stages model should be considered a common theme of adaptive radiation.

Understanding the invasion of moso bamboo (Phyllostachys edulis) into adjacent evergreen broadleaf forest based on functional traits is crucial due to its significant influence on ecosystem processes. However, existing research has primarily focused on above- or below-ground traits in isolation, lacking a comprehensive integration of both. In this study, we conducted a trait-based analysis including 23 leaf traits and 11 root traits in three forest types - bamboo forest, mixed bamboo and broadleaf forest, and evergreen broadleaf forest - to investigate trait differences, phenotypic integration, and above- and below-ground resource strategies in bamboo and broadleaf species. Our findings demonstrated significant differences in leaf and root key traits between bamboo and broadleaf species, strongly supporting the "phenotypic divergence hypothesis". Bamboo exhibited stronger trait correlations compared to broadleaf species, indicating higher phenotypic integration. Above- and below-ground strategies were characterized by trade-offs rather than coordination, resulting in a multi-dimensional trait syndrome. Specifically, a unidimensional leaf economics spectrum revealed that bamboo with higher leaf N concentrations (LNC), P concentrations (LPC), and specific leaf area (SLA) adopted a "fast acquisitive" above-ground strategy, while broadleaf species with thicker leaves employed a "slow conservative" above-ground strategy. A two-dimensional root trait syndrome indicated a "conservation" gradient with bamboo adopting a "slow conservative" below-ground strategy associated with higher root tissue density (RTD), and broadleaf species exhibiting a "fast acquisitive" below-ground strategy linked to higher root N concentrations (RNC) and P concentrations (RPC), and a "collaboration" gradient probably ranging from broadleaf species with a "do-it-yourself" strategy characterized by high specific root length (SRL), to bamboo adopting an "outsourcing" strategy with thicker roots. In conclusion, key trait divergence from coexisting broadleaf species, higher phenotypic integration, and multi-dimensional opposite above- and below-ground resource strategies confer competitive advantages to moso bamboo, shedding light on the mechanistic understanding of its invasion into subtropical evergreen broadleaf forest and providing theoretical guidance for maintaining the stability of subtropical forest ecosystem.

Aims/introduction: In patients with diabetes, obesity is an aggravating factor for glycemic control and its vascular complications. However, the psychological and behavioral characteristics of those patients with obesity have not been fully clarified. This study investigated eating and coping behavior, personality traits, quality of life (QOL), and depression status in patients with diabetes with or without obesity. Materials and methods: Questionnaires obtained from 567 patients with diabetes at Dokkyo Medical University were analyzed. Eating behavior, coping behavior, personality traits, QOL, and depression status were evaluated by the Eating Behavior Questionnaire, Brief COPE, Japanese Ten-Item Personality Inventory, EuroQol 5 Dimensions-5 Level, and Patient Health Questionnaire-9, respectively. Participants were divided according to body mass index (BMI) into a non-obese group (BMI < 25), obese group (BMI 25-35), and high-degree obese group (BMI ≥ 35), and results were compared between groups. Results: On all items of the Eating Behavior Questionnaire, scores were higher in the obese and high-degree obese groups than non-obese group, indicating worse eating behavior. In coping behavior, significant intergroup differences were found in self-distraction, substance use, using emotional support, using instrumental support, and venting. As for personality traits, the obese group had significantly lower conscientiousness and higher emotional instability than the non-obese group. There was no significant difference in QOL or depression status. Conclusions: These results suggest that there are some characteristics in eating and coping behaviors and some personality traits between obese and non-obese patients with diabetes. Treatment based on such characteristics may be useful for patients with diabetes and obesity. BACKGROUND: Evidence suggests that type 2 diabetes mellitus may protect from abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA). However, it is unclear whether a causal relationship exists between these two conditions and, if so, whether it remains consistent among racial groups. METHODS: Cross-ethnic Mendelian randomization was used to examine the causal relationships between type 2 diabetes mellitus, metabolic traits, and AAA. Inverse variance weighted was the primary analysis tool, supplemented by MR-Egger, weighted median, and Mendelian randomization Pleiotropy RESidual Sum and Outlier. Heterogeneity and horizontal pleiotropy were assessed using the Cochran's Q test and MR-Egger intercept, respectively. RESULTS: According to inverse variance weighted, an inverse correlation between type 2 diabetes mellitus and AAA was detected in Europeans (odds ratio [OR] 0.91, 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.84-0.99; p = 0.034) and East Asians (OR 0.87, 95% CI 0.77-0.99; p = 0.038). Fasting glucose was inversely associated with AAA in Europeans (OR 0.56, 95% CI 0.33-0.96; p = 0.034) but not in East Asians. In Europeans, fasting insulin was a risk factor for AAA (OR 3.03, 95% CI 1.53-6.01; p = 0.001), while 2-hour glucose was protective (OR 0.67, 95% CI 0.49-0.91; p = 0.011). Glycated hemoglobin had no effect. Insufficient instrumental variables prevented the evaluation of the relationships of fasting insulin, glycated hemoglobin, and 2-hour glucose with AAA in East Asians. CONCLUSIONS: Type 2 diabetes mellitus protects against AAA in Europeans and East Asians. The effects of different glucose metabolism characteristics on AAA may inform AAA treatment.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Friends are major sources of social support for adolescents. This support may sometimes lead to co-rumination when the problem is discussed exhaustively with a focus on negative feelings. Co-rumination has been associated with some forms of anxiety, including clinical symptoms. Further studies are needed to investigate whether this association extends to additional and non-clinical forms of anxiety in youth. This study aimed to explore the relationship between co-rumination and trait anxiety, test anxiety, and anxiety sensitivity using secondary data. DESIGN AND METHODS: In this 2019 cross-sectional study, 1204 (59% girls) Canadian 6th-grade early adolescents (ages 11-12) and 11th-grade late adolescents (ages 16-17) completed self-report questionnaires measuring co-rumination, trait anxiety, test anxiety, and anxiety sensitivity. RESULTS: Co-rumination was associated with anxiety sensitivity in early adolescents and with trait anxiety, test anxiety, and anxiety sensitivity in late adolescents. CONCLUSIONS: Developmental factors may play a role in the association between co-rumination and different forms of anxiety. Anxiety sensitivity may appear alongside co-rumination in early adolescence and may broaden to trait and test anxiety in late adolescence. These results extend our understanding of the relationship between co-rumination and anxiety, as well as generate hypotheses for future longitudinal studies.

BACKGROUND: Understanding connections between biodiversity and ecosystem services can be enhanced by shifting focus from species richness to functional trait-based approaches, that when paired with comparative phylogenetic methods can provide even deeper insights. We investigated the functional ecology and phylogenetic diversity of pollination services provided by hymenopteran insects visiting apple flowers in orchards surrounded by either 'natural' or 'disturbed' landscapes in New South Wales, Australia. We assessed whether morphological and behavioural traits (hairiness, body size, glossa length, pollen load purity, and probability of loose pollen) exhibited non-random phylogenetic patterns. Then, explored whether bees, the primary pollinators in this system, filled unique or overlapping functional entities (FEs). For each landscape, we calculated phylogenetic diversity and used FEs to assess functional richness, evenness, and diversion. RESULTS: A phylogenomic matrix based on ultraconserved elements (UCEs; 1,382,620 bp from 1,969 loci) was used to infer a fully-resolved and well-supported maximum likelihood phylogeny for 48 hymenopteran morphospecies. There was no significant difference in species richness between landscape categories. Pollinator communities at natural sites had higher phylogenetic complexity (X = 2.37) and functional divergence (x̄ = 0.74 ± 0.02 s.e.) than disturbed sites (X = 1.65 and x̄ = 0.6 ± 0.01 s.e.). Hairiness showed significant phylogenetic clustering (K = 0.94), whereas body size, glossa length, and loose pollen showed weaker non-random phylogenetic patterns (K between 0.3-0.5). Pollen load purity showed no association with phylogeny. The assemblage of 17 bee morphospecies comprised nine FEs: eight FEs consisted of native bees with three containing 65% of all native bee taxa. The introduced honey bee (Apis mellifera) occupied a unique FE, likely due to its different evolutionary history. Both landscape types supported six FEs each with three overlapping: two native bee FEs and the honey bee FE. CONCLUSIONS: Bee hairiness was the only functional trait to exhibit demonstrable phylogenetic signal. Despite differences in species richness, and functional and phylogenetic diversity between orchard landscape types, both maintained equal bee FE numbers. While no native bee taxon was analogous to the honey bee FE, four native bee FEs shared the same hairiness level as honey bees. Health threats to honey bee populations in Australia will likely disrupt pollination services to apple, and other pollination-dependent food crops, given the low level of functional redundancy within the investigated pollinator assemblages.

BACKGROUND: Chickpea is a key pulse crop grown in the spring in dryland regions. The cold resistance potential of chickpeas allows for the development of genotypes with varying sowing dates to take advantage of autumn and winter rainfall, particularly in dryland regions. In this study, we assessed grain yield, plant height, 100-seed weight, days to maturity, and days to flowering of 17 chickpea genotypes in five autumn-sown dryland regions from 2019 to 2021. Additionally, the response of selected chickpea genotypes to cold stress was examined at temperatures of -4 °C, 4 °C, and 22 °C by analyzing biochemical enzymes. RESULTS: Mixed linear model of ANOVA revealed a significant genotype × environment interaction for all traits measured, indicating varying reactions of genotypes across test environments. This study reported low estimates of broad-sense heritability for days to flowering (0.34), days to maturity (0.13), and grain yield (0.08). Plant height and seed weight exhibited the highest heritability, with genotypic selection accuracies of 0.73 and 0.92, respectively. Moreover, partial least square regression highlighted the impactful role of rainfall during all months except of October, November, and February on grain yield and its interaction with environments in autumn-planted chickpeas. Among the genotypes studied, G9, G10, and G17 emerged as superior based on stability parameters and grain yield. In particular, genotype G9 stood out as a promising genotype for dryland regions, considering both MTSI and genotype by yield*trait aproaches. The cold assay indicated that - 4 °C is crucial for distinguishing between susceptible and resistant genotypes. The results showed the important role of the enzymes CAT and GPX in contributing to the cold tolerance of genotype G9 in autumn-sown chickpeas. CONCLUSIONS: Significant G×E for agro-morphological traits of chickpea shows prerequisite for multi-trial analysis. Chickpea`s direct root system cause that monthly rainfall during plant establishment has no critical role in its yield interaction with dryland environment. Considering the importance of agro-morphological traits and their direct and indirect effects on grain yield, the utilization of multiple-trait stability approches is propose. Evaluation of chickpea germplasm reaction against cold stress is necessary for autumn-sowing. Finally, autumn sowing of genotype FLIP 10-128 C in dryland conditions can led to significant crop performance.

Introduction: Age-based stereotype threat (ABST), the concern of being judged according to a negative age stereotype may lead to underperformance in the stereotype domain. The present study aims to replicate the negative effect of ABST on episodic memory. Importantly, we further examine openness to experience as a potential buffer of the ABST effect as well as the role that different memory strategies may play in episodic memory performance. Method: Seventy-five older adults were randomly assigned to the ABST condition or the control condition before taking a word-stem cued recall memory task. They learned word-lists with either a repetition strategy, low resource demanding but less efficient, or a mental imagery strategy, high resource demanding but more efficient. Openness was measured with the Big-5 personality questionnaire. Results: ABST reduced memory performance and disrupted more the recall of words learned with the imagery strategy. The results also showed that openness predicted recall performance associated with the imagery strategy only in the threatened group. Conclusion: These results indicated that a high level in openness may disrupt the negative effect of ABST by improving the capacity of threatened people to execute efficient, resource demanding memory strategies. This finding supports the idea that contextual factors as well as individual characteristics such as personality, need to be considered when assessing episodic memory in aging.

Respiration of lipids by copepods during diapause (overwintering dormancy) contributes to ocean carbon sequestration via the seasonal lipid pump (SLP). Parameterizing this flux in predictive models requires a mechanistic understanding of how life history adaptation in copepods shapes their timing of exit from diapause. We investigate the optimal phenology of Calanus finmarchicus in the Norwegian Sea using an individual-based model in which diapause exit is represented as a trait characterized by phenotypic mean and variance. Without interannual variability, optimal exit correlated with the onset of the spring phytoplankton bloom and phenotypic variance was of no benefit. In contrast, copepods endured reduced fitness and adopted bet-hedging strategies when exposed to interannual variability in bloom timing and predation: later exit from diapause and phenotypic variance maintained adult numbers in anomalous late-bloom years. Exit nevertheless remained well before the peak of the bloom which is a favorable strategy when low predation early in the year enhances survival of eggs and early developmental stages. Our work highlights the complex interactions between C. finmarchicus and its environment and the need for improved understanding of bet-hedging strategies and the cues of diapause exit to progress the representation of the SLP in global biogeochemical models.

Future changes in climate, together with rising atmospheric CO 2 ${\text{CO}}_{2}$ , may reorganise the functional composition of ecosystems. Without long-term historical data, predicting how traits will respond to environmental conditions-in particular, water availability-remains a challenge. While eco-evolutionary optimality theory (EEO) can provide insight into how plants adapt to their environment, EEO approaches to date have been formulated on the assumption that plants maximise carbon gain, which omits the important role of tissue construction and size in determining growth rates and fitness. Here, we show how an expanded optimisation framework, focussed on individual growth rate, enables us to explain shifts in four key traits: leaf mass per area, sapwood area to leaf area ratio (Huber value), wood density and sapwood-specific conductivity in response to soil moisture, atmospheric aridity, CO 2 ${\text{CO}}_{2}$ and light availability. In particular, we predict that as conditions become increasingly dry, height-growth optimising traits shift from resource-acquisitive strategies to resource-conservative strategies, consistent with empirical responses across current environmental gradients of rainfall. These findings can explain both the shift in traits and turnover of species along existing environmental gradients and changing future conditions and highlight the importance of both carbon assimilation and tissue construction in shaping the functional composition of vegetation across climates.

Objective: We aimed to investigate the association of trait emotional intelligence (TEI), anxiety, depression, and quality of life (QoL) in lung cancer individuals with brain metastases receiving radiotherapy. Methods: A total of 289 individuals with brain metastases from lung cancer after radiotherapy participated. Data were collected from October 2018 to December 2022. Data were collected on variables such as patient demographics, medical characteristics, TEI, anxiety, depression, and QoL. Pearson correlation analysis and structural equation modeling were used to analyze the data. Results: Correlation coefficients between TEI and anxiety, depression, and QoL scores were -0.451 (P = .007), -0.580 (P = .002), and 0.391 (P = .009). The correlation coefficient for depression and QoL was -0.433 (P = .008). Anxiety and depression mediate the positive correlation between trait EI and QoL. Conclusion: Individuals with high idiosyncrasies of emotional intelligence are able to more effectively regulate negative emotions associated with cancer symptoms and treatment, and thus better perceive QoL. Trait EI training can reduce anxiety and depression symptoms and further improve the QoL of lung cancer individuals.

Strong early growth vigor is an essential target in both direct seeded rice breeding and high-yielding rice breeding for rice varieties with relatively short growth duration in the double-cropping region. Shoot dry weight (SDW) is one of the important traits associated with early growth vigor, and breeders have been working to improve this trait. Finding stable QTLs or functional genes for SDW is crucial for improving the early growth vigor by implementing molecular breeding in rice. Here, a genome-wide association analysis revealed that the QTL for SDW, qSDW-5, was stably detected in the three cultivation methods commonly used in production practice. Through gene-based haplotype analysis of the annotated genes within the putative region of qSDW-5, and validated by gene expression and knockout transgenic experiments, LOC_Os05g09520, which is identical to the reported GW5/GSE5 controlling grain width (GW) and thousand grain weight (TGW) was identified as the causal gene for qSDW-5. Five main haplotypes of LOC_Os05g09520 were identified in the diverse international rice collection used in this study and their effects on SDW, GW and TGW were analyzed. Phenotypic comparisons of the major haplotypes of LOC_Os05g09520 in the three subpopulations (indica, japonica and aus) revealed the same patterns of wider GW and higher TGW along with higher SDW. Furtherly, the haplotype analysis of 138 rice varieties/lines widely used in southern China showed that 97.8% of the cultivars/lines carry Hap2LOC_Os05g09520. These results not only provide a promising gene source for the molecular breeding of rice varieties with strong early growth vigor, but also elucidate the effect of the LOC_Os05g09520 haplotypes on SDW, GW, and TGW in rice. Importantly, this study provides direct genetic evidence that these three traits are significantly correlated, and suggests a breeding strategy for developing high-yielding and slender grain-shaped indica cultivars with strong early growth vigor.

Aims: This study evaluated millet germplasms in Liaoning Province to support the collection, preservation and innovation of millet germplasm resources. Methods: The study was conducted from 2018 to 2020, involved the selection of 105 millet germplasm resources from the Germplasm Bank of the Liaoning Academy of Agricultural Sciences (LAAS), the observation and recording of 31 traits, and the application of multivariate analysis methods to assess phenotypic diversity. Results: From the diversity analysis and correlation analysis, it was found that the tested traits had abundant diversity and complex correlations among them. Principal component analysis (PCA) comprehensively analyzed all quantitative traits and extracted seven principal components. Grey relational analysis (GRA) highlighted the varied contributions of different traits to yield. Through systematic cluster analysis (SCA), the resources were categorized into six groups at Euclidean distance of 17.09. K-mean cluster analysis determined the distribution interval and central value of each trait, then identified resources with desirable traits. Conclusion: The results revealed resources that possess characteristics such as upthrow seedling leaves, more tillers and branches, larger and well-formed ears, and lodging resistance prefer to higher grain yield. It was also discovered that the subear internode length (SIL) could be an indicator for maturity selection. Four specific resources, namely, Dungu No. 1, Xiao-li-xiang, Basen Shengu, and Yuhuanggu No. 1, were identified for further breeding and practical applications.

Sickle cell disease (SCD) is a group of inherited blood disorders characterized by abnormal hemoglobin production, affecting individuals worldwide with varying prevalence across different populations. Manifestations vary, ranging from severe to mild. SCD is characterized by the presence of hemoglobin S (HbS), which distorts erythrocytes upon deoxygenation, leading to sickling. This results in hemolytic anemia, painful vaso-occlusive crises (VOC), and multiple organ damage, including bones, due to microinfarcts. Sickle cell trait (SCT), or carrier status, is not considered an SCD and often runs a benign course. We report a 44-year-old man of African descent presenting with a one-month history of pain in his ankles and feet. He had a prior diagnosis of sickle cell "trait" without previous VOC. Hematological indices were normal. Hemoglobin electrophoresis showed absent HbA, elevated HbS, elevated HbF, and normal HbA2. X-rays and MRI revealed bilateral bone infarction in diaphyses of right proximal and bilateral distal tibias. Molecular analysis of [Formula: see text]-globin revealed compound heterozygous hemoglobin S and type 2 deletion of persistence of fetal hemoglobin (HPFH). Pulmonary function tests revealed restrictive lung disease. A literature review from 1946 to May 2024 via PubMed, EMBASE, and Medline was performed, revealing two cases of HbS-HPFH with avascular necrosis affecting the femoral neck were briefly reported more than 60 years ago. Although pulmonary function tests in SCD typically show a mild restrictive pattern with decreased diffusion capacity and rarely an obstructive pattern, no cases of HbS-HPFH were identified. In conclusion, multiple bone infarctions are extremely rare in HbS-HPFH. Lung and bone diseases might be unrecognized in this unique disorder.

Introduction Iron deficiency anemia and beta-thalassemia trait are two common and important differentials of microcytic hypochromic anemia. Various discrimination indices using two or more common complete blood cell count (CBC) parameters have been used to distinguish between the two since 1973. Recently, a new discriminant index, the CRUISE index, was proposed in the year 2019. The efficacy of various older indices along with the CRUISE index was evaluated for patients in our geographical area. Materials and method Ours was a laboratory-based, cross-sectional study where 100 patients, based on inclusion and exclusion criteria, with microcytic hypochromic anemia were evaluated for CBC parameters along with serum ferritin and hemoglobin-high performance liquid chromatography (Hb HPLC). A total of eight discrimination indices namely, Mentzer, Srivastava, Shine & Lal, Green & King, RDWI, England & Fraser, Kerman I and CRUISE index were used and evaluated for their diagnostic efficacy using different statistical parameters. ROC curves were obtained and a new cut-off value was proposed for our population. Data was analysed using Microsoft Excel (Microsoft® Corp., Redmond, WA, USA) and SPSS v29.0.2.0 (20) (IBM Corp., Armonk, NY, USA). Results Out of the total 100 cases, 39 were beta-thalassemia trait and 61 were iron deficiency anemia cases. The average age was 36.7 (±12.7 SD) years. Among the 73 females, 43 were diagnosed as iron deficiency anemia (IDA) and 30 as beta-thalassemia trait (BTT) cases. Among the 27 males, 18 were diagnosed as IDA and nine as BTT cases. The mean values were significantly lower in IDA patients for mean corpuscular volume (MCV) (p=.008), mean corpuscular haemoglobin (MCH) (p=.003), and mean corpuscular haemoglobin concentration (MCHC) (p=.003) and significantly higher for red cell distribution width (RDW) (p=.020). The mean ferritin levels in cases of IDA were 7.61 (±3.75) mcg/L and in BTT were 87.09 (±66.77 SD) mcg/L. The mean HbA2 levels in IDA cases were 2.75% (±0.41% SD) and BTT cases were 5.57% (±0.73% SD). CRUISE index revealed the highest AUC (0.934), YI (76.21) and accuracy (90%) followed by the Mentzer index with a diagnostic accuracy of 81%. Shine & Lal index revealed the lowest AUC (0.710), YI (3.28) and accuracy (41%). Conclusion CRUISE index, which was recently proposed, was ranked 1st in terms of AUC, YI, and accuracy and was considered 2nd best in terms of sensitivity for differentially diagnosing the two conditions. Mentzer index, a commonly used index, also revealed a high diagnostic accuracy in our study for differentiating BTT from IDA. CRUISE index being a novel index, more research work needs to be carried out in various other geographical setups to evaluate the efficacy of this index.
