Humic acid (HA) is a major natural organic pollutant widely coexisting with calcium ions (Ca2+) in natural water and wastewater bodies, and the coagulation-ultrafiltration process is the most typical solution for surface water treatment. However, little is known about the influences of Ca2+ on HA fouling in the ultrafiltration process. This study explored the roles of Ca2+ addition in HA fouling and the potential of Ca2+ addition for fouling mitigation in the coagulation-ultrafiltration process. It was found that the filtration flux of HA solution rose when Ca2+ concentration increased from 0 to 5.0 mM, corresponding to the reduction of the hydraulic filtration resistance. However, the proportion and contribution of each resistance component in the total hydraulic filtration resistance have different variation trends with Ca2+ concentration. An increase in Ca2+ addition (0 to 5.0 mM) weakened the role of internal blocking resistance (9.02% to 4.81%) and concentration polarization resistance (50.73% to 32.17%) in the total hydraulic resistance but enhanced membrane surface deposit resistance (33.93% to 44.32%). A series of characterizations and thermodynamic analyses consistently suggest that the enlarged particle size caused by the Ca2+ bridging effect was the main reason for the decreased filtration resistance of the HA solution. This work revealed the impacts of Ca2+ on HA fouling and demonstrated the feasibility to mitigate fouling by adding Ca2+ in the ultrafiltration process to treat HA pollutants.

In this study, mechanisms of membrane fouling caused by polysaccharides with different molecular structures in polyaluminum chloride (PACl) coagulation-ultrafiltration (C-UF) process were explored. Carrageenan and xanthan gum were chosen for model foulants of straight chain and branched chain polysaccharides, respectively. Filtration experiments showed that, with PACl dosage of 0-5 mM, specific filtration resistance (SFR) of carrageenan and xanthan solution showed a unimodal pattern and a continuous decrease pattern, respectively. A series of experimental characterizations indicated that the different SFR pattern was closely related to structure of foulants layer. Density functional theory (DFT) calculation suggested that Al3+ preferentially coordinating with the terminal sulfonyl groups of carrageenan chains to promote gel layer formation at low PACl concentration (0.15 mM). There existed a chemical potential gap between bound water in gel layer and free water in the permeate, so that, filtration through gel layer corresponded to rather high SFR for overcoming this gap. In contrast, Al3+ coordinating with the non-terminal sulfonyl groups of carrageenan at high PACl concentration caused transition from gel layer to cake layer, leading to SFR decrease. However, xanthan gum itself can form a dense gel layer with a complex polymer network by virtue of the interlacing of main chains and branches. Al3+ coordinating with the carboxyl groups on branched chains of xanthan gum resulted in clusters of polymer chains and flocculation, corresponding to the reduced SFR. This proposed molecular-level mechanism well explained membrane fouling behaviors of polysaccharides with different molecular structure, and also facilitated to optimize C-UF process for water treatment.

Effects of calcium ions and polyaluminum chloride (PACl) on membrane fouling in coagulation-ultrafiltration (UF) process were investigated in this study. Filtration tests demonstrated three interesting filtration behaviors: 1) high specific filtration resistance (SFR) of alginate solution with low CaCl2 or PACl addition (e. g. 3.51×1015 m·kg -1 under the condition of 1.5 mM CaCl2 addition); 2) unimodal pattern of alginate SFR with PACl or CaCl2 addition alone; 3) synergistic effects between CaCl2 and PACl on alginate SFR. It was found that, the foulant morphological changes driven by the thermodynamic mechanisms based on Flory-Huggins lattice theory take the critical roles in these filtration behaviors. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations showed that initial coordination of Ca2+ and Al3+ ions with alginates tended to form tetrahedron geometry and geometry of coordinating three terminal carboxyl groups, respectively, which facilitated to elongate the alginate chains (without clustering the flocs) and form more stable gel, increasing SFR. Improving Ca2+ and Al3+ dosages triggered transition to other geometries for clustering polymeric network and flocculation, reducing SFR. Due to the higher binding affinity of Ca2+ over Al3+, Ca2+ and Al3+ sequentially take roles of enlarging polymeric network and clustering the coordination compounds, and then facilitate to form large size flocs and reduce SFR, causing the synergistic effects between CaCl2 and PACl additions. The proposed thermodynamic mechanisms satisfactorily explained these interesting fouling behaviors, allowing to further optimize coagulation-UF process.

Cake formed by flocs is a crucial factor to affect membrane fouling during coagulation-ultrafiltration process. To investigate the role of floc properties on cake, cake characteristics under various coagulant dosage conditions were calculated by scanning electron microscope (SEM) imaging. Results found that one SEM image with × 5000 magnification could accurately estimate cake porosity with relative error lower than 5.00% for all conditions, whereas more SEM images with × 10,000 magnification or × 20,000 magnification should be applied to calculate cake porosity precisely. This could be explained by different pore information of SEM images with various magnifications. Compared to single SEM image with × 10,000 magnification and × 20,000 magnification, single SEM image with × 5000 magnification contained the most comprehensive pore information and slightly overestimated pore area for pore smaller than 0.4 µm2 due to lower resolution. To verify feasibility by SEM image evaluating cake characteristics, cake porosity calculated by SEM image and Carman-Kozeny equation were analyzed. The results showed that cake porosity estimated by these two methods were nearly the same, proving the feasibility of this method. Moreover, with the increase of coagulant dosage, cake porosity presented similar variation with floc average size, indicating that floc average size was likely to dominate cake porosity in this study. For pore characteristics, pore average characteristic length and pore average area were in accordance with floc fractal dimension, whereas pore fractal dimension and pore amount were consistent with floc average size. This gives specific information about the relation between floc properties and cake characteristics.

Membrane filtration combined with pre-coagulation has advantages in advanced wastewater treatment. As a model of a microbial polysaccharide, research on the effect of sodium alginate (SA) on alum hydrolysis has been rare; therefore, it is necessary to gain insight into the interface interaction between SA molecules and Al species, and the role SA plays during floc formation. In this study, the interaction mechanism between SA and Al species has been investigated, by evaluating the effect of SA on floc characteristics and membrane fouling during coagulation-ultrafiltration with different Al species coagulants (AlCl3 and preformed Al13). Al 2p X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) confirmed that the complexation of ligands and Al species strongly affects the reaction pathways for Al hydrolysis and the final nature of the flocs, as Al13 can be decomposed into octahedral precipitates when SA is added. The presence of SA can affect floc properties, which have important impacts on the characteristics of the cake layer and membrane fouling. Due to the bridging ability of SA, the floc strength increased by about 50% using Ala, which was much better than preformed Al13, with a percentage increase of only about 6%. Moreover, the recovery factor of HA-flocs was decreased from 96% to 43% with SA addition of 0.5 mg/L. It was concluded that SA can affect the characteristics of the cake layer and membrane fouling through participating in the formation of primary flocs and altering the Al hydrolysis pathway.

The effect of ultrafiltration process and temperature concentration on MRPs content and antioxidant, antimicrobial and cytotoxic properties of date palm sap syrups were investigated. MRPs were analyzed by HPLC. Antioxidant activity was evaluated by reducing power and DPPH free radical and H2O2 scavenging activities. Antimicrobial activity was evaluated by the agar disk diffusion method. In vitro cytotoxic activity was examined by cell proliferation assay. Date sap syrups displayed strong antioxidant activities which are correlated 5HMF and 2F contents. In addition, concentration at 100 °C, unlike ultrafiltration process, enhanced significantly the antioxidant activities sap syrups and total phenolic contents. The antimicrobial activities showed marked activity against S. enterica, P. aeruginosa, S. aureus, L. monocytogenes with an inhibition zone of 21, 34, 27 and 34 mm respectively. Cytotoxicity assays showed that sap syrups can inhibit the proliferation of HeLa cell lines at high concentration.

This study was conducted to investigate the typical types of chemically enhanced backwash by-products (CEBBPs) produced in the chemically enhanced backwash (CEB) process and the influence of CEB parameters on typical CEBBPs in the coagulation-ultrafiltration process. Health risk assessment was applied to assess the potential adverse health effect from exposure to effluent after the optimal CEB. The results indicated that backwash reagent of sodium hypochlorite reacted with organic matter to produce CEBBPs, including 12 species of volatile halogenated organic compounds (VHOCs) and 9 species of haloacetic acids (HAAs) during CEB process. The amount of HAAs was higher than that of VHOCs indicating that the content of primary HAA precursor (hydrophilic organic matter) was high in raw surface water and the coagulation process could not lower the hydrophilic organic matter concentration. After comprehensive consideration of the influence of single factors on the CEBBP formation and membrane cleaning effect, the optimal CEB parameters was 4 min of backwash duration, 120 min of backwash interval, 20 L/(m(2)·h) of backwash flux, and 25 mg/L of reagent concentration. Under the optimum CEB cleaning parameters, the effluent did not pose non-carcinogenic risk to local residents but could pose potential carcinogenic risk.

Objective To study the effects of ultrafiltration process on activating blood and removing blood stasis efficacy ofShentong Zhuyu Decoction; To investigate the feasibility of applying ultrafiltration technology in purifying Shentong Zhuyu Decoction.Methods The mice micro artery and vein diameter, clotting time and opening capillary of auricle microcirculation of mice were used as indexes to observe the effects of different ultrafiltration process on activating blood and removing blood stasis efficacy ofShentong Zhuyu Decoction.ResultsShentong Zhuyu Decoction showed satisfying efficacy of activating blood and removing blood stasis. There was no significant difference between the non-ultrafiltration process and ultrafiltration processed by 20 and 50 nm ultrafiltration membranes.Conclusion Ultrafiltration technology can be applied to purifying Shentong Zhuyu Decoction, and the membrane pore size must be more than 20 nm.
