RESUMO

Purpose: Verofilcon A, a new daily disposable silicone hydrogel soft contact lens (SCL), is expected to be more comfortable to wear due to its smooth surface. This study aims to compare the comfort level of verofilcon A with eyeglasses in first-time SCL wearers. Methods: A total of 58 new SCL wearers participated in this study. Participants' comfort scores while wearing glasses or verofilcon A were examined at baseline (glasses) and one and four weeks after starting to wear the SCLs. Results: At the end of the one-month study period, no participants had abandoned wearing the SCLs due to discomfort. The vision scores (1-10) for glasses (baseline) and SCLs (week one, week four) were better with SCLs than glasses in the morning (7.9 ± 1.9 vs 8.9 ± 1.3, 9.0 ± 1.2, p<0.01), during the day (8.0 ± 1.6 vs 9.0 ± 1.1, 8.9 ± 1.2, p<0.01), at the end of the day (7.2 ± 2.1 vs 8.5 ± 1.5, 8.7 ± 1.4, p<0.01), and the entire day (7.7 ± 1.7 vs 8.9 ± 1.2, 8.7 ± 1.3, p<0.01). The percentages of participants who agreed that wearing SCLs at week four was as good as or better than glasses in terms of overall vision, peripheral vision, vision at the end of the day, comfort during the day, comfort at the end of the day, less fatigue during the day, and less fatigue at the end of the day were 91.4%, 100.0%, 91.4%, 89.7%, 82.8%, 87.9%, and 89.7%, respectively. Of the participants, 93.1%, 100.0%, and 93.1% felt that the SCLs were easy to wear, more comfortable than expected, and would like to purchase the same lenses in the future, respectively. Conclusion: These findings suggest that verofilcon A is more comfortable than glasses and is effective as an introductory lens for first-time SCL wearers.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The surface wettability of soft contact lenses (SCLs) affects the wearing comfort. Verofilcon A is a daily disposable silicone hydrogel contact lens with SMARTSURFACE® technology, ensuring high surface wettability. PURPOSE: To evaluate tear stability on the surface of verofilcon A and narafilcon A SCLs and correlate these findings with clinical parameters and patients' discomfort. METHODS: Sixty-two SCL wearers (124 eyes) with SCL discomfort were randomly assigned to use narafilcon A (control SCL) and verofilcon A for 2 weeks each by crossover. The noninvasive tear break-up time (NIBUT) of the naked eye at baseline and pre-lens NIBUT (PL-NIBUT) of the SCL surface after 2 weeks of using each SCL were measured using the DR-1α® dry eye observation device. Corneal superficial punctate keratopathy (SPK) (0-3) and conjunctival hyperemia (0-3), and comfort level of SCL wear (1-10) were also evaluated. RESULTS: NIBUT and PL-NIBUT values were 4.6 ± 2.3 s for the naked eye, 6.6 ± 6.6 s for narafilcon A, and 11.3 ± 3.5 s for verofilcon A. verofilcon A had significantly higher PL-NIBUT than the naked eye and narafilcon A (p < 0.05). SPK (0.16 ± 0.48 vs. 0.00 ± 0.00, p < 0.01) and conjunctival hyperemia (1.15 ± 0.82 vs. 0.49 ± 0.50, p < 0.01) scores were lower when wearing verofilcon A than narafilcon A. The ocular comfort score of wearing SCLs was higher with verofilcon A than with narafilcon A (8.7 ± 1.8 vs. 9.8 ± 0.5, p < 0.01). The ocular comfort score for wearing verofilcon A was higher, regardless of the baseline NIBUT. CONCLUSION: The results of this study showed a consistent surface-wetting advantage of verofilcon A in patients with ocular discomfort. verofilcon A was used comfortably in patients with low NIBUT scores at baseline. The findings suggest that verofilcon A is recommended for SCL wearers experiencing SCL-related dry eye symptoms and discomfort.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: The dryness and discomfort associated with soft contact lenses (SCLs) prevent their continued use. Recently, verofilcon A, a new daily disposable silicone hydrogel material SCL, was introduced, which has a high water content (surface water content of 80% or more) that overcomes the low water content drawback of silicone hydrogels. In this study, we evaluated the non-invasive tear break-up time (NIBUT) and comfort level in individuals wearing verofilcon A SCL for the first time. METHODS: We enrolled 42 first-time SCL wearers, comprising 84 eyes. NIBUT was measured using the DR-1α® dry eye observation device at the state of the naked eye before SCL wear (baseline) and at one and four weeks after the first SCL wear. Additionally, we conducted a questionnaire survey during the fourth week to assess the comfort level (0-10) of SCL wear. Results: The NIBUT values were significantly higher at one week (10.8 ± 2.2 s, p<0.01) and four weeks (11.4 ± 2.2 s, p<0.01) after the first SCL wear than those at baseline (5.9 ± 2.0 s). Comfort level in SCL use was significantly higher at one week (9.0 ± 1.1, p<0.01) and four weeks (8.7 ± 1.2, p<0.01) than that at baseline (7.8 ± 1.8), and this level was higher regardless of the baseline NIBUT value. CONCLUSION: Prolonged BUT and increased comfort levels were observed in individuals wearing verofilcon A SCLs. Improvement in tear fluid retention was found to alleviate dry eye and discomfort, suggesting that verofilcon A may be a beneficial introductory lens for first-time SCL wearers.

RESUMO

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the performance of verofilcon A daily disposable contact lenses (CL) in CL wearers who identified themselves as heavy digital device users. Patients and Methods: This prospective, non-masked, open-label study enrolled CL wearers who reported ≥6 hours digital device use per day. Participants were dispensed with the verofilcon A study lenses for 14±2 days, to be worn for at least 5 days a week and 10 hours per day, while continuing their normal routine of digital device use. Participants rated the lens performance at the Day 14 visit using a 0-100 (with 100 being best) scale. Ratings were completed at lens insertion, after 6 hours of digital device use, just before CL removal and for overall experience. Participants also completed a 4-point (strongly agree/disagree, slightly agree/disagree) Likert scale-based questionnaire. Results: Thirty-two participants were eligible and completed the study (27 females; age 25.8 ± 6.0 years, ranging from 19 to 40). Overall lens performance ratings at the Day 14 visit (mean ± standard deviation) for comfort, dryness, and clarity of vision were 91 ± 11, 88 ± 11, and 92 ± 9, respectively. Subjective ratings were stable throughout the day with no significant differences after insertion, after 6 hours of digital device use and before CL removal (all p>0.05). The majority of participants agreed that the study lenses performed well, provided good all-day comfort (28/32; p<0.01) and good all-day vision (29/32; p<0.01). Participants also agreed that after ≥6 hours of digital device use they were satisfied with CL comfort (27/32; p<0.01), vision (29/32; p<0.01) and that the lenses provided good performance (26/32; p<0.01). Conclusion: Verofilcon A lenses were found to perform well, with high ratings for comfort, dryness and vision that remained high throughout the day, during extensive digital device use.

RESUMO

Purpose: Asian dust poses a serious global health hazard. Airborne particles adhering to contact lenses may cause substantial damage to the ocular surface. The recently released one-day disposable silicone hydrogel soft contact lens (SCL), the verofilcon A, has a smooth surface with SMARTSURFACE® technology, which is designed to prevent adhesion of protein components and foreign bodies. The purpose of this study was to verify the protective quality of verofilcon A SCL against adhesion of Asian dust particles to its surface. Methods: Verofilcon A and etafilcon A (control lens) SCLs were used (n=16 per group), and 0.2 mL of physiological saline containing 0.01 mg/mL of Asian dust particles was dropped on the surface of SCLs, allowed to stand for 1 hour, shaken for 1 minute, and rinsed three times with saline (after rinsing). In addition, the samples were agitated by a vortex mixer for 1 minute and rinsed three times with saline (after vortex). The number of Asian dust particles adhering to the SCLs and percentage of the surface area occupied by the Asian dust particles was determined before washing, after rinsing, and after vortexing. Results: The number of adherent Asian dust particles was lower on verofilcon A SCL (297 ± 116 after rinsing, and 5 ± 14 after vortexing) than on etafilcon A SCL (523 ± 212 after rinsing, p=0.003, and 378 ± 268 after vortexing, p<0.001). The Asian dust adhesion area was also lower on verofilcon A SCL (3.6 ± 2.3% after rinsing and 0.0 ± 0.1% after vortexing than on etafilcon A (10.2 ± 2.1% after rinsing, p=0.002, and 5.2 ± 3.0% after vortexing, p<0.001). Conclusion: These findings indicate that verofilcon A SCL has the property of low adhesion of Asian dust particles. Verofilcon A SCL can be recommended for SCL wearers during windy and Asian dust days.

RESUMO

Purpose: The development of new contact lens materials and designs are necessary to minimise patient dropout. A lens material with water surface technology was recently developed to incorporate toric design. The on-eye stability of a toric contact lens is critical to a successful toric lens fitting. In an effort to establish if the new daily disposable verofilcon A toric silicone hydrogel lens provides fast stability for ease of fit, this study assessed the initial and short-term on-eye stability of this new lens. Patients and Methods: Habitual full-time wearers of soft contact lenses, aged 18 or over, were enrolled and fit with the verofilcon A toric lens. Study endpoints included lens settling time, axis orientation at specific time-points within 10 minutes after insertion, lens oscillation with blink, lens movement and centration, and scribe mark visibility. Results: Thirty-nine subjects completed the study; 67% were female and mean age was 34.1 ± 10.8 years (range 18 to 61). The majority of verofilcon A toric lenses (98.7%) settled on average within 60 seconds. Average lens orientation was 3° from six o'clock position within two minutes of insertion. The lenses showed minimal oscillation with blink; 98.7% of the eyes demonstrated ≤5° oscillation with blink. All lenses showed optimal/acceptable lens movement and centration and the scribe mark was reported as easily visible in 96% of eyes. Practitioners reported a 99% first lens fit success rate. Conclusion: The novel verofilcon A toric lens was highly successful with the first lens, had excellent on-eye stability and good fit characteristics. These qualities make this new lens a good option for lens wearers. Furthermore, it fulfills the needs of practitioners who want a toric lens that is easy and predictable to fit.

RESUMO

Objective: To compare a novel daily disposable contact lens (DDCL) verofilcon A with other DDCL materials in terms of pre-lens tear film (PLTF) stabilization and visual performance for prolonged use in healthcare professionals with the use of masks. Methods: Subjects aged 20-40 years old were prospectively randomized into three study groups. Group 1: verofilcon A, group 2: nesofilcon A and group 3: senofilcon A. The subjects were evaluated at baseline with best corrected visual acuity (BCVA), non-invasive tear break up time (NIBUT) of pre-lens tear film, and high order aberrations (HoAs). After 28 days of CL use, NIBUT at 1, 4, 8, and 12 h, HoAs, contrast sensitivity (CS) with CVS100-E and contact lens dry eye questionnaire-8 (CLDEQ-8) were evaluated. Results: Between August and September 2021, 147 eyes of 77 subjects were included in the three study groups. At day 28, the CS scores at 18 cycles per degree, spatial frequencies, and the mean NIBUT scores at 4, 8, and 12 h were higher in the verofilcon A group compared to the nesofilcon A and at 12 h were higher compared to the senofilcon A (p < 0.05). The mean HoAs and CLDEQ-8 test scores were higher in the nesofilcon A group (p < 0.001). Conclusion: The results of this study suggest the superiority of the PLTF stabilization ability of verofilcon A in healthcare professionals with prolonged use of mask. The improved CS and NIBUT scores of this lens could be explained by a new and unique surface technology with greater than 80% water content.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: To compare the subjective performances of verofilcon A daily disposable silicone hydrogel contact lenses (CLs) and etafilcon A hydrogel CLs. METHODS: Successful wearers of spherical soft CLs for distance correction were prospectively randomized to wear verofilcon A or etafilcon A lenses for 1 week and crossed over to the alternative lenses. The primary study objective was a comparison of distance visual acuity (VA). Exploratory endpoints included subjective overall lens preference (5-point scale) and subjective ratings (10-point scales) of end-of-day (EOD) vision, overall handling, insertion comfort, EOD comfort, overall quality of vision, overall comfort, vision throughout the day, lens handling at insertion, and lens handling at removal. RESULTS: Of 92 subjects (184 eyes), 46 each were randomized to verofilcon A or etafilcon A lenses and subsequently crossed over to the other lenses. Evaluation of distance VA showed that verofilcon A lenses were noninferior to etafilcon A lenses. Comparison of lens preference showed that 68 (73.9%) subjects somewhat or strongly preferred verofilcon A lenses, whereas 21 (22.9%) somewhat or strongly preferred etafilcon A lenses (p<0.0001). Mean ± SD ratings of EOD vision (8.6±1.5 vs 7.7±1.9), overall handling (8.7±1.5 vs 6.9±2.3), insertion comfort (9.2±1.0 vs 7.7±1.9), and EOD comfort (8.0±1.9 vs 7.0±2.2) were all significantly (p≤0.0001 each) higher for verofilcon A than for etafilcon A lenses. Mean ± SD ratings of overall quality of vision (8.9±1.2 vs 8.2±1.8), overall comfort (8.6±1.5 vs 7.4±1.8), vision throughout the day (8.9±1.3 vs 8.1±1.8), lens handling at insertion (9.0±1.4 vs 6.9±2.5), and lens handling at removal (8.3±2.1 vs 7.7±2.2) were also significantly higher for verofilcon A lenses. No subject experienced any ocular adverse events. CONCLUSION: After 1 week of wear, the study population reported that ratings for subjective endpoints were significantly higher for verofilcon A lenses than for etafilcon A lenses.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: To assess the patient and ECP preference of verofilcon A lenses over approximately a one-week period when worn on a daily wear, daily disposable (DD) basis by current DD contact lens wearers (CLWs) and new CLWs. ECPs assessed the lens fit, performance on eye and lens preference (to habitual DD lens) for current wearers. METHODS: A total of 218 current DD CLWs and 129 new CLWs aged >18 years participated in the survey. Baseline demographics and one-week data were obtained by 31 ECPs after fitting up to 10 current and 10 new wearers each. The survey was conducted online for both the participants and the ECPs. The survey took place in Australia and New Zealand from April to May 2019. RESULTS: For new wearers, the surveyed results demonstrated strong wearer preference for the verofilcon A lens with quality of life as a main driver. For current wearers, comfort was the main driver for verofilcon A preference. Post survey, 73% of ECPs stated they would most likely continue to fit verofilcon A lenses.
