PURPOSE: To evaluate the effect of toothbrushing with conventional and whitening dentifrices on the color difference (ΔE00), gloss (Δgloss), and surface roughness (SR) of stained stabilized zirconia with 5 mol% of yttrium oxide (5Y-TZP) after polishing or glazing. METHODS: Specimens were divided into four groups (n=20): C (control), S (staining), SG (staining and glazing) and SP (staining and polishing). 50,000 toothbrushing cycles were performed with conventional (n=10) and whitening (n= 10) dentifrice slurries. The ΔE00 and Δgloss were measured using a spectrophotometer and CIEDE2000 system while SR was measured by laser confocal microscope. The ΔE00 and Δgloss data were analyzed using 2-way ANOVA, and SR data were analyzed using the linear repeated measures model, with Bonferroni's complementary test (α= 0.05). RESULTS: The ΔE00 values were beyond the acceptability threshold and no differences were found among the groups. There was no difference among groups to Δgloss after toothbrushing with conventional dentifrice while SP presented the highest values of Δgloss after toothbrushing with whitening dentifrice. Conventional dentifrice decreased the SR of stained groups and whitening dentifrice decreased SR of S and SG. The toothbrushing with conventional and whitening dentifrices promoted color difference, but did not impair gloss and surface roughness of stained 5Y-TZP. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: Monolithic zirconia has been routinely used for esthetic restorations, however the type of finishing procedures that is carried out on it must be taken into consideration, in addition to the fact that brushing can influence the color difference of the material as well as interfere with surface roughness and gloss.

Dual/multimodal imaging strategies are increasingly recognized for their potential to provide comprehensive diagnostic insights in cancer imaging by harnessing complementary data. This study presents an innovative probe that capitalizes on the synergistic benefits of afterglow luminescence and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), effectively eliminating autofluorescence interference and delivering a superior signal-to-noise ratio. Additionally, it facilitates deep tissue penetration and enables noninvasive imaging. Despite the advantages, only a limited number of probes have demonstrated the capability to simultaneously enhance afterglow luminescence and achieve high-resolution MRI and afterglow imaging. Herein, we introduce a cutting-edge imaging platform based on semiconducting polymer nanoparticles (PFODBT) integrated with NaYF4@NaGdF4 (Y@Gd@PFO-SPNs), which can directly amplify afterglow luminescence and generate MRI and afterglow signals in tumor tissues. The proposed mechanism involves lanthanide nanoparticles producing singlet oxygen (1O2) upon white light irradiation, which subsequently oxidizes PFODBT, thereby intensifying afterglow luminescence. This innovative platform paves the way for the development of high signal-to-background ratio imaging modalities, promising noninvasive diagnostics for cancer.

The luminescence properties of erbium and yttrium co-doped cadmium difluoride with three different concentrations of yttrium were investigated. First, we synthesized single crystal samples with good optical quality using the Bridgman technique. From the optical absorption spectra, recorded at room temperature, both in the ultraviolet-visible and infrared spectral ranges, Judd-Ofelt analysis was performed based on yttrium concentrations to predict the radiative properties of Er3+ luminescent ions. For the 10% optimum concentration of yttrium, a detailed photoluminescence investigation was carried out. We mainly explored green, red, and near-infrared fluorescence under different excitation wavelengths and presented their highlight spectroscopic characteristics. The desired transitions had relatively high emission cross-sections both under visible and near-infrared excitation. Optical gain followed a similar trend. Furthermore, the dynamic fluorescence study showed a significant increase in the measured lifetime under an 800 nm infrared excitation. The upconversion process under an 800 nm excitation produced quantum efficiency greater than 100% due to the contribution of more than one energy transfer mechanism.

Laser lithotripsy is gaining global prominence and is a dynamically progressing field marked by a continual influx of new and comprehensive research each year. Recently, there has been a noticeable shift toward the adoption of various kinds of lasers, such as holmium: yttrium-aluminum-garnet (Ho:YAG) and thulium fiber (TFL) lasers. Consequently, we aim to conduct a bibliometric analysis to analyze key areas of research activity within scientific publications that center on the utilization of laser techniques in urolithiasis. A search of the literature spanning from 1978 to 2022 was carried out on 25 December 2023 using the Scopus database to explore research related to the application of laser techniques for urolithiasis treatment. Visualization analysis was performed using VOSviewer software (version 1.6.20). We examined 962 publications that met the specified criteria, 791 (82.22%) of which were original articles. The analysis of the retrieved publications indicated a consistent increase in research output from 1978 to 2022; a particularly noteworthy surge occurred after 2003. In particular, the U.S. claimed the leading position as the most productive country, contributing 211 articles (21.93%). However, India had the highest research productivity according to the adjustment index of 19.08. In the European region, 324 publications (33.68% of the total) originated from 25 countries. The Journal of Endourology contributed the most between 1978 and 2022 (n = 96, 9.98%). The most cited paper examined the effectiveness of holmium: yttrium-aluminum-garnet (Ho:YAG) lasers, while a subsequent study focused on the use of a thulium fiber laser (TFL), an emerging laser technology that has gained increased recognition. Co-occurrence analysis revealed three distinct clusters focusing on the types of laser technology, minimally invasive approaches, and success rate/postoperative complications. This comprehensive investigation delves into the global landscape of laser use for the treatment of urolithiasis. This review supports the emerging clinical concept of using various types of laser technology for urolithiasis treatment. Moreover, the hot issues that researchers should focus on based on the findings of this study are the use of different types of laser lithotripsy in view of the surgical approach, success rate and complications.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the content of rare earth elements(REs)in blood and hair of residents in a RE mining area in Northwest Hubei, and evaluate the impact of REs on the health status of local residents. METHODS: A total of 191 residents from the core area of RE mining areas and 186 residents from non RE mining areas, aged 20-69, were selected. The content of REs in the blood and hair of the survey subjects was measured using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry, and compared with existing literature values. At the same time, blood tests and questionnaire surveys will be conducted on the health status of residents to examine whether human RE enrichment can lead to endemic diseases. RESULTS: The average total content of REs in the blood of residents in the mining area was 60.22 ng/mL, which was 3.35 times that of the control area; The average total content of REs in hair was 1197.91 ng/g, which was 6.32 times higher than the control area. As age increasing, the abundance of REs in the blood and hair of both men and women in mining areas increased. The proportion of Yttrium and Scandium in the blood and hair were much higher than that in the soil. Compared to hair, Yttrium and Scandium were more easily enriched in the blood. There was no significant difference in the probability of fatty liver, hepatitis B, hypoglycemia, hypotension, hypertension and heart disease and the average life span between residents in RE mining areas and those in the control area. CONCLUSION: The high daily average dietary intake of REs in residents leads to a relatively large accumulation of REs in human blood and hair, but no significant and substantial human health damage has been found at present.

To study the effect range of the Nd:YAG laser through various levels of cloudy medium for targets with varying grayscale values in vitro. The coated paper cards with grayscale values of 0, 50, 100, and 150 were used as the laser's targets, which were struck straightly with varying energies using three burst modes (single pulse, double pulse, and triple pulse). Six filters (transmittances of 40, 50, 60, 70, 80, and 90) were applied to simulate various levels of cloudy refractive medium. Image J software was used to measure the diameters and regions of the laser spots. The ranges of the Nd:YAG laser spots increased with energy in the same burst mode (P < 0.05). Under the same amount of energy, the ranges of the Nd:YAG laser spot increased with the grayscale value of the targets (P < 0.05). The greater the transmittance of the filters employed, the larger the range of the Nd: YAG laser spots produced. Assuming that the total pulse energy is identical, the effect ranges of multi-pulse burst modes were significantly larger than those of single-pulse burst mode (P < 0.05). The effect range of a Nd:YAG laser grows with increasing energy and the target's grayscale value. A cloudy refractive medium has a negative impact on the effect range of the Nd: YAG laser. The single pulse mode has the narrowest and safest efficiency range.

BACKGROUND: Yttrium-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) and alumina are the most commonly used dental esthetic crown materials. This study aimed to provide detailed information on the comparison between yttrium-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) and alumina, the two materials most often used for esthetic crowns in dentistry. METHODOLOGY: The ground-state energy of the materials was calculated using the Cambridge Serial Total Energy Package (CASTEP) code, which employs a first-principles method based on density functional theory (DFT). The electronic exchange-correlation energy was evaluated using the generalized gradient approximation (GGA) within the Perdew (Burke) Ernzerhof scheme. RESULTS: Optimization of the geometries and investigation of the optical properties, dynamic stability, band structures, refractive indices, and mechanical properties of these materials contribute to a holistic understanding of these materials. Geometric optimization of YSZ provides important insights into its dynamic stability based on observations of its crystal structure and polyhedral geometry, which show stable configurations. Alumina exhibits a distinctive charge, kinetic, and potential (CKP) geometry, which contributes to its interesting structural framework and molecular-level stability. The optical properties of alumina were evaluated using pseudo-atomic computations, demonstrating its responsiveness to external stimuli. The refractive indices, reflectance, and dielectric functions indicate that the transmission of light by alumina depends on numerous factors that are essential for the optical performance of alumina as a material for esthetic crowns. The band structures of both the materials were explored, and the band gap of alumina was determined to be 5.853 eV. In addition, the band structure describes electronic transitions that influence the conductivity and optical properties of a material. The stability of alumina can be deduced from its bandgap, an essential property that determines its use as a dental material. Refractive indices are vital optical properties of esthetic crown materials. Therefore, the ability to understand their refractive-index graphs explains their transparency and color distortion through how the material responds to light..The regulated absorption characteristics exhibited by YSZ render it a highly attractive option for the development of esthetic crowns, as it guarantees minimal color distortion. CONCLUSION: The acceptability of materials for esthetic crowns is strongly determined by mechanical properties such as elastic stiffness constants, Young's modulus, and shear modulus. YSZ is a highly durable material for dental applications, owing to its superior mechanical strength.

A 62-year-old female patient presented with no improvement in vision 10 days after undergoing cataract extraction in the right eye. The unaided visual acuity in the right eye was 0.1, and examination with a slit lamp revealed the presence of the intraocular lens with an increased gap between the intraocular lens and the posterior capsule. Anterior segment optical coherence tomography showed a distance of 3.236 mm between the posterior capsule and the posterior surface of the intraocular lens. Based on the medical history, ocular examination, and auxiliary examinations, a diagnosis of right eye capsular blockage syndrome was made. Nd:YAG laser capsulotomy was performed at the anterior capsule outside the optical zone of the intraocular lens. One week later, the posterior capsule adhered to the posterior surface of the intraocular lens, and there was a significant improvement in vision compared to before the procedure.

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: The connector height and retainer occlusal thickness of fixed partial dentures (FPDs) may affect restoration longevity. PURPOSE: The purpose of this in vitro study was to determine and compare the fracture resistance of 4-unit monolithic 5% yttria tetragonal zirconia polycrystal (5Y-TZP) FPDs made with different connector heights and retainer occlusal thicknesses after thermomechanical aging. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Forty test metal dies were duplicated from a master metal die containing 2 anatomic abutment preparations of the mandibular right first premolar and second molar for a 4-unit FPD. The dies were divided into 2 groups of 20 each for the fabrication of 4-unit FPDs, with 2-mm and 4-mm uniform connector heights at all 3 connectors, resulting in 6.3-mm2 and 12.6-mm2 connector areas. Each of these groups was further divided into 2 subgroups based on the occlusal thickness of the 2 retainers of 1 mm and 2 mm (n=10). Polyvinyl siloxane impressions of the test metal dies were made and poured in Type V dental stone. Laboratory scans were performed on all the stone dies, and 40 5Y-TZP FPDs (Ceramill Zolid FX) were designed and fabricated. Subsequently, all the FPDs were luted on to the metal dies with a self-adhesive resin cement. The FPDs were preloaded (400 000 mechanical cycles; 4000 thermocycles) using a mastication simulator and tested for axial compressive strength. Two-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used to examine the effect of connector and occlusal thicknesses on the fracture load (α=.05). The data were further assessed using the post hoc Tukey HSD multiple comparison test (α=.05). RESULTS: The mean fracture load values were between 737 N and 1563 N. Significant differences in the mean fracture load were found between the connector heights (601 N; P<.001) and occlusal thicknesses (225 N; P=.002), but the interaction of the 2 factors was not significant (P=.132) The Tukey post hoc analysis showed significant differences between the connector thicknesses groups (P<.01), but the occlusal thicknesses were found to be similar for the same connector height (P=.609) CONCLUSIONS: Connector height and occlusal retainer thickness influenced the fracture load of 4-unit monolithic 5Y-TZP FPDs after thermomechanical aging.

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: Zirconium dioxide (zirconia) cannot be etched in a clinical setting, but zirconia restorations with minimal to no micromechanical bonding are approved and widely used in contemporary dentistry. However, information on the shear bond strength of zirconia and adhesive cement, on the effect of an added proportion of yttria, and on the effect of aging is lacking. PURPOSE: The purpose of this in vitro study was to evaluate the shear bond strength of cement luted to zirconia and the effect of aging. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A total of 131 test specimens were made from 4 zirconia materials with different amounts of yttria added to formulate yttria-partially stabilized zirconia (Y-PSZ); 3Y-PSZ (n=32), 4Y-PSZ (n=34), and 2 5Y-PSZs (n=32 and n=33). A dual-polymerizing cement and 10-methacryloyloxydecyl dihydrogen phosphate-containing primer were used. All specimens were stored in water at 37 °C, half of them for 24 hours and the other half for 6 months. After aging, the specimens were subjected to a shear bond strength test with a notched crosshead according to the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) 29022:2013 standard. The data were analyzed using the independent 2-sample t test, ANOVA, and the Levene test (α=.05). RESULTS: The 3Y-PSZ material had higher mean ±standard deviation shear bond strength (31.83 ±12.80 MPa) compared with 4Y-PSZ (23.34 ±7.66 MPa) after 24 hours of aging in water and higher (28.98 ±14.03 MPa) than 4Y-PSZ (14.35 ±9.62 MPa) and one of the 5Y-PSZ (16.05 ±11.34 MPa) after 6 months. Debonding before loading occurred in all groups except for one of the 5Y-PSZ groups. CONCLUSIONS: Zirconia without macromechanical retention, regardless of an added proportion of yttria, showed high shear bond strength, but the tested materials also had a high coefficient of variance, which, in practice, leads to the risk of the occasional debonding of zirconia restorations.

Objective. Lutetium yttrium oxyorthosilicate (LYSO) scintillation crystals are used in positron emission tomography (PET) due to their high gamma attenuation, fair energy resolution, and fast scintillation decay time. The enduring presence of the176Lu isotope, characterized by a half-life of 37.9 billion years, imparts a consistent radiation background (BG) profile that depends on the geometry and composition attributes of the LYSO crystals.Approach. In this work, we proposed a methodology for estimating the composition of LYSO crystals in cases where the exact Lutetium composition remains unknown. The connection between BG spectrum intensity and intrinsic radioactivity enables precise estimation of Lutetium density in LYSO crystal samples. This methodology was initially applied to a well-characterized LYSO crystal sample, yielding results closely aligned with the known composition. The composition estimation approach was extended to several samples of undisclosed LYSO crystals, encompassing single crystal and crystal array configurations. Furthermore, we model the background spectrum observed in the LYSO-based detector and validate the observed spectra via simulations.Main results. The estimated Lutetium composition exhibited adequate consistency across different samples of the same LYSO material, with variations of less than 1%. The result of the proposed approach coupled with the simulation successfully models the background radiation spectra in various LYSO-based detector geometries.Significance. The implications of this work extend to the predictive assessment of system behaviors and the autonomous configuration parameters governing LYSO-based detectors.

RESUMO

Capsulotomy with neodymium-doped yttriumaluminum-garnet (Nd:YAG) laser is an effective treatment for posterior capsule opacification following cataract surgery. A wide opening of the posterior capsule associated with the ruptured anterior hyaloid can cause anterior chamber vitreous prolapse. Two patients who developed angle-closure glaucoma associated with vitreous prolapse following Nd:YAG laser posterior capsulotomy were successfully treated with antiglaucoma medication and peripheral iridotomies. Patient identification for potential risk factors and a careful postoperative follow-up are essential to avoid these serious complications.

BACKGROUND: Recent forms of translucent zirconia material have been developed, offering a wide range of options and varieties for enhancing aesthetics, making it a preferred choice in the field of prosthetic dentistry. However, there is insufficient understanding regarding the recent types of zirconia materials and their optical behavior. Understanding the variables that influence the translucency of zirconia and identifying strategies to enhance its esthetics are crucial. PURPOSE: The current systemic review highlights a comprehensive understanding of different zirconia generations in relation to their optical characteristics and evaluates material-related variables affecting their translucency. METHODS: The present review studied in-vitro studies that evaluated the optical characteristics of different yttria content of yttria stabilized materials. The topics explored were: (1) the different zirconia material generations and their optical behavior; (2) material-related factors that affect their translucency. The research was restricted to online publication in the English language from July 1, 2010, to July 31, 2023, using PubMed, Scopus, and Science Direct resources. The search key terms and their combinations were "zirconia," "translucent zirconia," "cubic zirconia," "highly translucent zirconia," "yttria partially stabilized zirconia," "monolithic zirconia," "translucency," "optical properties," and "light transmission." RESULTS: The data obtained from fifty-three studies addressed the optical characteristics of various zirconia generations. They reported that changing yttria content had a significant impact on translucency. Different kinds of zirconia ceramics of the same generation have varying translucencies. Achieving optimum aesthetics with monolithic zirconia is challenging due to factors related to material aspects such as the presence of additives, point defects, microstructure, thickness, phase distribution, and sintering conditions. CONCLUSIONS: Newly developed monolithic dental zirconia ceramics have improved aesthetics and translucency. However, additional research is necessary to evaluate their performance and long-term durability. TRIAL REGISTRATION: This systematic review was registered in PROSPERO, under number CRD42023474482.

OBJECTIVES: To investigate the impacts of speed and high-speed sintering on the densification, microstructure, phase composition, translucency, and flexural strength of yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ). METHODS: A total of 162 disc-shaped specimens (n = 18) were cold-isostatically pressed from 3YSZ (Zpex), 4YSZ (Zpex 4), and 5YSZ (Zpex Smile) powders (Tosoh Corporation) and sintered according to the following protocols: conventional (control, ∼12 h), speed (∼28 min for 3YSZ; ∼60 min for 4YSZ and 5YSZ), and high-speed (∼18 min) sintering. Dimensions of zirconia specimens after sintering and polishing (1-µm diamond grit finish) were Ø13.75 × 1 mm. Density, microstructure, phase content, translucency parameter, and biaxial flexural strength were evaluated using Archimedes', SEM, XRD, spectrophotometric, and piston-on-3-ball methods, respectively. Data were analyzed with either one-way ANOVA and Tukey's test or Kruskal-Wallis with Dunn's test (α = 0.05). RESULTS: For all YSZ compositions, conventional sintering yielded the highest density followed by speed then high-speed sintering. All sintering protocols resulted in similar strength values; however, speed and high-speed sintering protocols afforded significantly lower translucency relative to conventional sintering. XRD analysis revealed similar spectra for YSZs sintered by various protocols. The speed sintered specimens had the smallest grain size whereas the high-speed sintered 5YSZ possessed the largest grain size among all groups. SEM examination of all YSZ compositions revealed that the average pore size was an order of magnitude smaller than the average grain size. SIGNIFICANCE: Speed and high-speed sintering of YSZs yield similar strength but diminished density and translucency relative to their conventionally sintered counterparts.

Rare earth elements (REEs) are widely utilized in industries. However, The specific exposure features of REEs and potential biomarkers of exposure in occupational populations remain unclear. In this study, we evaluated the external and internal REEs exposure levels among the participants working in the ionic rare earth smelting plant. For the external exposure, the concentrations of 14 REEs and total rare earth elements (ΣREEs) in airborne particles were significantly elevated in the REEs-exposed versus non-exposed group (P < 0.05). Meanwhile, the levels of Yttrium (Y), Gadolinium (Gd), Terbium (Tb), Dysprosium (Dy), Holmium (Ho), Thulium (Tm), Ytterbium (Yb), and ΣREEs in urine were higher in the REEs-exposed group compared to the non-exposed group (P < 0.05). Notably, a significant positive correlation was observed between Y in both the airborne particles and urine samples as well as Gd, and the Spearman correlation coefficient was 0.53 and 0.39 respectively, both P < 0.05. Conversely, no statistically significant differences were found in the levels of 15 REEs or ΣREEs in the blood samples between the REEs-exposed group and non-exposed group. Moreover, the concentrations of ΣREEs and 9 REEs in nail samples of the exposed group were significantly higher than those of the non-exposed group (P < 0.05), and the composition ratios of REEs in the nail samples closely resembled those found in individual airborne particles. Therefore, nail and urine samples were proposed to reflect long-term and short-term exposure to ionic rare earth respectively. Exposure biomarkers confirmed by external and internal exposure characteristics accurately provide the situation of human exposure to REEs environment, and have profound significance for monitoring and evaluating the level of REEs pollution in human body. It also provides a vital basis to find out the effect biomarkers, susceptible biomarkers and the health effects of rare earth environment for the future research.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to compare the four-point flexural strength of CAM-milled and sintered (as-sintered, AS) specimens with those of high-polished (HP) specimens using chairside polishing systems to simulate clinical surface conditions. METHODS: Seven full-contour zirconia CAM/CAM blanks with various yttria contents (3, 4, 5 mol%) including three high-translucent groups (5Y) were selected to prepare flexural specimens. The bend bar specimens (2.0 × 4.0 × 25.0 mm3) were fabricated by using STL file and dental CAM machine with the respective zirconia blanks (98 mm ϕ and 10-14 mm in height). Twelve bar specimens were machined from one zirconia puck and a total of 24 specimens were prepared from each group. The pre-sintered bar specimens were sintered by using a dental zirconia furnace at 1530-1550 °C for 2 h according to the instructions. All sintered specimens were divided into two groups: as-sintered (AS) group and high-polished (HP) groups (n = 12). HP groups were subjected to polishing one surface of specimens using a three-step polishing system and finally finished with diamond polishing. After cleaning and drying, the flexural strength of all specimens was determined by a fully articulating four-point flexure fixture consisting of a 1/4-point test configuration with an inner/outer span of 10/20 mm. Statistical differences between AS and HP groups were conducted with Weibull analysis. The fractured surfaces of zirconia specimens were observed using a field emission SEM and EDS to detect failure origins. RESULTS: The mean AS flexural strength values were significantly lower than those of HP counterparts. However, Weibull moduli expressing the reliability of HP groups were generally decreased although not significantly in comparison to their AS. The fracture of the AS specimens mostly originated from extrinsic CAM-milling defects, while the HP specimens were fractured from intrinsic subsurface or volume defects including pores, large grain clusters, inclusions, and corner-located critical flaws. Two high-translucent (5Y) zirconia groups were not affected in their strength and reliability after polishing, whereas one 5Y zirconia significantly increased its strength but significantly lowered its reliability. SIGNIFICANCE: The extrinsic and intrinsic strength-limiting defects should be considered in evaluating the flexural strength and reliability of dental CAD/CAM zirconia ceramics for full-contour restorations. For the materials tested in this study, more optimized processing of blanks and milling protocols of pre-sintered zirconia blanks should be developed including post-sintering surface finishing to reduce the flaw population regulating strength and reliability which will affect the survivability of dental zirconia prostheses.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to 1) compare the stress corrosion coefficient (n) of a Y-TZP obtained by two fatigue tests: cyclic and dynamic and 2) evaluate the effect of frequency in the characteristic lifetime and the existence of interaction between the cyclic fatigue and slow crack growth. METHODS: A total of 145 Y-TZP specimens were produced in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions. These specimens, measuring 4.0 × 3.0 × 25.0 mm, were used for dynamic (n = 70) and cyclic fatigue tests (n = 75). The specimens were obtained from CAD/CAM blocks, sectioned, and sintered in a furnace at 1530 °C with a heating rate of 25 °C/min. They were tested in their "as-sintered" form without any additional surface treatment. The fatigue tests were conducted using a four-point bending to obtain the slow crack growth parameters (n). The cyclic fatigue test was also conducted in two frequencies (2 and 10 Hz), using stress levels between 350 and 600 MPa. Data from these tests were analyzed using ASTM C 1368-00 formulas and Weibull statistics. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) was used for fracture surface analysis to identify the origin of the fracture. Critical defect size was measured and used, along with flexural strength values, to estimate fracture toughness. Dynamic fatigue test data were used to obtain subcritical crack growth (SCG) parameters and perform Weibull statistical analysis. The cyclic fatigue data were used in the General Log-linear Model equation using the ALTA PRO software. Data were analyzed using one-way ANOVA followed by Tukey post-hoc tests and Student's t-test at a significance level of p ≤ 0.05. RESULTS: In the dynamic fatigue test, the values obtained for σfo and n were 667 and 54, respectively. This parameter indicates how the strength of the material diminishes over time due to internal cracks. The Weibull parameters obtained from the same test results were m = 7.9, σ0 = 968, 9 and σ5% = 767, which indicates the reliability of the material. The Weibull parameters obtained by cyclic fatigue were statistically similar for the two frequencies used, the m* was 0.17 (2 Hz) and 0.21 (10 Hz); characteristic lifetimes (η) were 1.93 × 106 and 40,768, respectively. The n values obtained by cyclic fatigue were 48 and 40 at frequencies of 2 and 10 Hz, respectively. There was no effect of the frequency, the stress level or the interaction of the two in the Y-TZP lifetime, when analysed by General Log Linear Model. SIGNIFICANCE: the n values obtained by cyclic and dynamic fatigue tests showed no statistically significant difference and the effect of frequency in the characteristic lifetime and the existence of interaction between the cyclic fatigue and subcritical growth were not observed in the tested specimens.

OBJECTIVE: The study aims to evaluate the shear bond and flexural strength fatigue behavior of yttrium-stabilized zirconia (4YSZ) repaired using different resin composites. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Cylindric specimens of 4YSZ were obtained for the bond strength (Ø = 6 mm, 1.5 mm of thickness) and biaxial flexural strength (Ø = 15 mm, 1 mm of thickness) fatigue tests and divided into 3 groups according to the repair resin composite: EVO (nanohybrid), BULK (bulk-fill), and FLOW (flowable). The zirconia surface was air-abraded with alumina particles, a 10-methacryloyloxydecyl dihydrogen phosphate (10-MDP) primer was applied, and the resin composite was build-up over the zirconia. Fatigue shear bond strength and flexural fatigue strength tests were performed (n = 15). One-way ANOVA and Tukey post hoc tests were carried out for both outcomes, besides scanning electron microscopy and finite element analysis. RESULTS: The repair material affected the fatigue shear bond strength of zirconia ceramic. The BULK group (18.9 MPa) depicted higher bond strength values than FLOW (14.8 MPa) (p = 0.04), while EVO (18.0 MPa) showed similar results to both groups. No effect was observed for the mechanical behavior (p = 0.53). The stress distribution was similar for all groups. CONCLUSION: The repair of yttrium-stabilized zirconia (4YSZ) ceramics with bulk-fill resin composites was the best option for high fatigue bond strength. However, the fatigue mechanical performance was similar regardless of the applied repair material. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: The repair of yttrium-stabilized zirconia (4YSZ) monolithic restorations may be performed with nanohybrid and bulk-fill resin composites in order to promote longevity in the treatment.
