BACKGROUND: Lower limb heat exposure (LLHE) is a promising strategy for the daily management of cardiovascular health because of its non-pharmaceutical advantages. To support the application of this strategy in cardiovascular protection, we examined its impact on the global hemodynamic environment. METHODS: Skin blood flow (SBF) of eight locations on the lower limbs was measured before and after LLHE (40 °C and 44 °C) in ten healthy subjects by using a laser Doppler flowmeter. A closed-loop model of circulation uses changes in SBF to quantify the influence of LLHE on the blood flow of the arterial trunk (from ascending aorta to the femoral artery) and visceral branches (coronary, celiac, renal, and mesenteric arteries). RESULTS: The SBF in all locations tested on the lower limbs increased significantly (p<0.001) with LLHE and a 3.39-fold and 7.40-fold increase in mean SBF were observed under 40 °C and 44 °C conditions, respectively. In the model, the peak (3.9-25.1%), end-diastolic (13.7-107.3%), and mean blood flow (8.5-86.5%) in the arterial trunk increased with the increase in temperature, but the retrograde flow in the thoracic aorta and abdominal aorta Ⅰ increased at least twice in the diastolic period. Furthermore, LLHE also increased the blood flow of the visceral branches (2.5-20.7%). CONCLUSION: These findings suggest that LLHE is expected to be a daily strategy for enhancing the functions of both the arterial trunk and visceral arteries, but the increased blood flow reversal in the thoracic and abdominal aortas warrants further investigation.

The mechanical and structural behavior of the aorta depend on physiological functions and vary from proximal to distal. Understanding the relation between regionally varying mechanical and multi-scale structural response of aorta can be helpful to assess the disease outcomes. Therefore, this study investigated the variation in mechanical and multi-scale structural properties among the major segments of aorta such as ascending aorta (AA), descending aorta (DA) and abdominal aorta (ABA), and established a relation between mechanical and multi-structural parameters. The obtained results showed significant increase in anisotropy and nonlinearity from proximal to distal aorta. The change in periphery length and radii between load and stress free configuration was also found increasing far from the heart. Opening angle was significantly large for ABA than AA and DA (AA/DA vs ABA; p = 0.001). Mean circumferential residual stretch (ratio of mean periphery length at load and stress free configurations) was found decreasing between AA and DA, and then increasing between DA to ABA and its value was significantly more for ABA (AA vs DA; p = 0.041, AA vs ABA; p = 0.001, DA vs ABA; p = 0.001). The waviness of collagen fibers, collagen fiber content, collagen fibril diameter and total protein content were found significantly increasing from proximal to distal. Pearson correlation test showed a significant linear correlation between variation in mechanical and multi-scale structural parameters over the aortic length. Residual stretch was found positively correlated with collagen fiber content (r = 0.82) whereas opening angel was found positively correlated with total protein content (TPC) (r = 0.76).

It has been found that the incidence of cardiovascular disease in patients with lower limb amputation is significantly higher than that in normal individuals, but the relationship between lower limb amputation and the episodes of cardiovascular disease has not been studied from the perspective of hemodynamics. In this paper, numerical simulation was used to study the effects of amputation on aortic hemodynamics by changing peripheral impedance and capacitance. The final results showed that after amputation, the aortic blood pressure increased, the time averaged wall shear stress of the infrarenal abdominal aorta decreased and the oscillatory shear index of the left and right sides was asymmetrically distributed, while the time averaged wall shear stress of the iliac artery decreased and the oscillatory shear index increased. The changes above were more significant with the increase of amputation level, which will result in a higher incidence of atherosclerosis and abdominal aortic aneurysm. These findings preliminarily revealed the influence of lower limb amputation on the occurrence of cardiovascular diseases, and provided theoretical guidance for the design of rehabilitation training and the optimization of cardiovascular diseases treatment.

BACKGROUND: Many new tools for abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) rupture risk evaluation have been developed. These new tools need detailed hemodynamic information in AAA. However, hemodynamic data obtained from in vivo research are lacking. Thus, the objective of this study was to analyze blood flow patterns in an in vivo AAA model to acquire real-time hemodynamic information using AneurysmFlow, a novel flow evaluation system. METHODS: Digital subtraction angiography images of patients who underwent endovascular aneurysm repair were analyzed using the visualization function of the AneurysmFlow to classify blood flow patterns as laminar or turbulent flow. The presence of boundary layer separation was also evaluated. The time taken for contrast medium to travel from the infrarenal aortic neck to aortic bifurcation was acquired to calculate the flow velocity. Associations between characteristics of aneurysm including lumen occupying ratio of intraluminal thrombus (ILT) and the hemodynamic flow pattern were evaluated. RESULTS: A total of 37 AAA patients was enrolled. Their blood flow patterns were evaluated using the AneurysmFlow. Logistic regression analyses with lumen occupying ratio of ILT as an independent variable showed that the larger the lumen occupying ratio of ILT, the more likely the aneurysm was to show a laminar pattern (P = 0.03), and the more likely the boundary layer separation would not exist (P = 0.04). The flow velocity from the infrarenal aortic neck to the aortic bifurcation showed a positive association with the lumen occupying ratio of the ILT in linear regression analysis (P < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: Hemodynamic analysis of AAA with the AneurysmFlow using real-time individual patient models showed different flow patterns and flow velocities depending on ILT. This novel analytic approach using AneurysmFlow has potential to play an important role in obtaining clinically meaningful hemodynamic information of AAA.

In this paper an existing in vivo parameter identification method for arteries is extended to account for smooth muscle activity. Within this method a continuum-mechanical model, whose parameters relate to the mechanical properties of the artery, is fit to clinical data by solving a minimization problem. Including smooth muscle activity in the model increases the number of parameters. This may lead to overparameterization, implying that several parameter combinations solve the minimization problem equally well and it is therefore not possible to determine which set of parameters represents the mechanical properties of the artery best. To prevent overparameterization the model is fit to clinical data measured at different levels of smooth muscle activity. Three conditions are considered for the human abdominal aorta: basal during rest; constricted, induced by lower-body negative pressure; and dilated, induced by physical exercise. By fitting the model to these three arterial conditions simultaneously a unique set of model parameters is identified and the model prediction agrees well with the clinical data.

OBJECTIVE: To study the hemodynamic response to lower leg heating intervention (LLHI) inside the abdominal and iliac arterial segments (AIAS) of young sedentary individuals. METHODS: A Doppler measurement of blood flow was conducted for 5 young sedentary adults with LLHI. Heating durations of 0, 20, and 40 min were considered. A lumped parameter model (LPM) was used to ascertain the hemodynamic mechanism. The hemodynamics were determined via numerical approaches. RESULTS: Ultrasonography revealed that the blood flow waveform shifted upwards under LLHI; in particular, the mean flow increased significantly (p < 0.05) with increasing heating duration. The LPM showed that its mechanism depends on the reduction in afterload resistance, not on the inertia of blood flow and arterial compliance. The time-averaged wall shear stress, time-averaged production rate of nitric oxide, and helicity in the external iliac arteries increased more significantly than in other segments as the heating duration increased, while the oscillation shear index (OSI) and relative residence time (RRT) in the AIAS declined with increasing heating duration. There was a more obvious helicity response in the bilateral external iliac arteries than the OSI and RRT responses. CONCLUSION: LLHI can effectively induce a positive hemodynamic environment in the AIAS of young sedentary individuals.

The abdominal aorta is the largest artery in the abdominal cavity that supplies blood flows to vital organs through the complex visceral arterial branches, including the celiac trunk (the liver, stomach, spleen, etc.), the renal arteries (the kidneys) and the superior and inferior mesenteric arteries (the small and large intestine, pancreas, etc.). An accurate simulation of blood flows in this network of arteries is important for the understanding of the hemodynamics in various organs of healthy and diseased patients, but the computational cost is very high. As a result, most researchers choose to focus on a portion of the artery or use a low-dimensional approximation of the artery. In the present work, we introduce a parallel algorithm for the modeling of pulsatile flows in the abdominal aorta with branches to the primary organs, and an organ-based two-level method for calculating the resistances for the outflow boundary conditions. With this highly parallel approach, the simulation of the blood flow for a cardiac cycle of the anatomically detailed aorta can be obtained within a few hours, and the blood distribution to organs including liver, spleen and kidneys are also computed with certain accuracy. Moreover, we discuss the significant hemodynamic differences resulted from the influence of the peripheral branches. In addition, we examine the accuracy of the results with respect to the mesh size and time-step size and show the high parallel scalability of the proposed algorithm with up to 3000 processor cores.

BACKGROUND: Inferior vena cava flow (IVCF) and abdominal aortic flow (AAF) are essential components of the systemic circulation. Although postural changes might alter IVCF and AAF by the gravity effect, the exact details are unknown. PURPOSE: To evaluate the effect of gravity on IVCF and AAF using a novel magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) system that can image in any position. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Caval velocity-mapped images were obtained using the cine phase-contrast technique in the upright and supine positions with multi-posture MRI (n = 12). The mean IVCF/AAF velocity, maximum IVCF/AAF velocity, cross-sectional area of IVC/AA, mean IVCF/AAF, maximum IVCF/AAF, and heart rate in the two positions were assessed. RESULTS: The mean IVCF velocity, maximum IVCF velocity, cross-sectional area of IVC, mean IVCF, maximum IVCF, mean AAF velocity, maximum AAF velocity, mean AAF, and maximum AAF were significantly lower in the upright position compared with the supine position (P < 0.05 for all), with differences of 52% ± 33%, 36% ± 19%, 56% ± 18%, 26% ± 18%, 19% ± 11%, 33% ± 13%, 33% ± 22%, 42% ± 21%, and 37% ± 28%, respectively. Heart rate was significantly higher in the upright position compared with the supine position (116% ± 9.2%; P = 0.003). There were no differences in cross-sectional area of AA between the two positions (108% ± 22%; P = 0.583). CONCLUSION: The effect of gravity decreases IVCF and AAF. Clarifying the effect of gravity on IVCF and AAF during a postural change may help to improve the management of patients with circulatory disease.

INTRODUCTION: Magnetic resonance elastography (MRE)-derived aortic stiffness is a potential biomarker for multiple cardiovascular diseases. Currently, gradient-recalled echo (GRE) MRE is a widely accepted technique to estimate aortic stiffness. However, multi-slice GRE MRE requires multiple breath-holds (BHs), which can be challenging for patients who cannot consistently hold their breath. The aim of this study was to investigate the feasibility of a multi-slice spin-echo echo-planar imaging (SE-EPI) MRE sequence for quantifying in vivo aortic stiffness using a free-breathing (FB) protocol and a single-BH protocol. METHOD: On Scanner 1, 25 healthy subjects participated in the validation of FB SE-EPI against FB GRE. On Scanner 2, another 15 healthy subjects were recruited to compare FB SE-EPI with single-BH SE-EPI. Among all volunteers, five participants were studied on both scanners to investigate the inter-scanner reproducibility of FB SE-EPI aortic MRE. Bland-Altman analysis, Lin's concordance correlation coefficient (LCCC) and coefficient of variation (COV) were evaluated. The phase-difference signal-to-noise ratios (PD SNR) were compared. RESULTS: Aortic MRE using FB SE-EPI and FB GRE yielded similar stiffnesses (paired t-test, P = 0.19), with LCCC = 0.97. The FB SE-EPI measurements were reproducible (intra-scanner LCCC = 0.96) and highly repeatable (LCCC = 0.99). The FB SE-EPI MRE was also reproducible across different scanners (inter-scanner LCCC = 0.96). Single-BH SE-EPI scans yielded similar stiffness to FB SE-EPI scans (LCCC = 0.99) and demonstrated a low COV of 2.67% across five repeated measurements. CONCLUSION: Multi-slice SE-EPI aortic MRE using an FB protocol or a single-BH protocol is reproducible and repeatable with advantage over multi-slice FB GRE in reducing acquisition time. Additionally, FB SE-EPI MRE provides a potential alternative to BH scans for patients who have challenges in holding their breath.

The prevalence of diabetes mellitus is increasing worldwide, including the nation of Poland. The aim of this prospective and observational study was to determine risk factors and the predictors of diabetes incidence in elderly women, and to calculate the diabetes incidence ratio in this population. Two-hundred women, aged 65-74, who were non-diabetic at baseline in 2012 were followed for 6.5 years. All women were checked for incident diabetes. In non-diabetic subjects, diagnostic procedures for diabetes were performed according to Poland's Diabetes recommendations. Between April 2012 and September 2018, 25 women developed diabetes and the next 11 cases were diagnosed based on FPG or oral glucose tolerance test. Women with incident diabetes had significantly higher baseline FPG, triglycerides (TG), TG/HDL cholesterol ratio and visceral adiposity index (VAI) score, and lower abdominal aorta diameter (AAD), HDL cholesterol and eGFR. In the Cox proportional hazard regression analysis, only AAD < 18 mm and VAI score ≥ 3.8 were independently associated with diabetes risk, hazard ratio (HR) 2.47 (95% confidence interval 1.21-5.02), P = 0.013 and HR 2.83 (1.35-5.94), P = 0.006 respectively. In the backward stepwise regression analysis including all variables, diabetes incidence could be predicted from a linear combination of the independent variables: AAD < 18 mm (P = 0.002), VAI score ≥ 3.8 (P < 0.001) and FPG ≥ 5.6 mmol/L (P = 0.011). The calculated incidence of diabetes was 2769.2 new cases/100,000 persons per year. AAD below 18 mm seem to be a novel, independent marker of diabetes risk in elderly women, and AAD assessment during routine abdomen ultrasound may be helpful in identifying females at early elderliness with high risk of diabetes incidence.

Aortic aneurysm refers to dilatation of the aorta due to loss of elasticity and degenerative weakening of its wall. A preventive role for osteoprotegerin (Opg) in the development of abdominal aortic aneurysm has been reported in the CaCl2-induced aneurysm model, whereas Opg was found to promote suprarenal aortic aneurysm in the AngII-induced ApoE knockout mouse aneurysm model. To determine whether there is a common underlying mechanism to explain the impact of Opg deficiency on the vascular structure of the two aneurysm models, we analyzed suprarenal aortic tissue of 6-month-old ApoE-/-Opg-/- mice after AngII infusion for 28 days. Less aortic dissection and aortic lumen dilatation, more adventitial thickening, and higher expression of collagen I and Trail were observed in ApoE-/-Opg-/- mice relative to ApoE-/-Opg+/+ mice. An accumulation of α-smooth muscle actin and vimentin double-positive myofibroblasts was noted in the thickened adventitia of ApoE-/-Opg-/- mice. Our results suggest that fibrotic remodeling of the aorta induced by myofibroblast accumulation might be an important pathological event which tends to limit AngII-induced aortic dilatation in ApoE -/-Opg-/- mice.

PURPOSE: Studies are required to determine whether exposures to radiation encountered during manned missions in deep space may have adverse effects on the cardiovascular system. Most of the prior studies on effects of simulated space radiation on the heart and vasculature have been performed in mouse models. To provide data from a second animal species, two studies were performed to assess effects of high-energy charged particle radiation on the heart and abdominal aorta in a rat model. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In study A, male Long Evans rats were exposed to whole-body protons (250 MeV, 0.5 Gy) or oxygen ions (16O, 600 MeV/n, 0.5 Gy), and ultrasonography was used to measure in vivo cardiac function and blood flow parameters at 3, 5, 9 and 12 months after radiation, followed by tissue collection at 12 months. In study B, male Long Evans rats were exposed to 16O (1 GeV/n, 0.01-0.25 Gy), and hearts collected at 6 to 7 and 12 months for histology and western-blots. RESULTS: Both protons (250 MeV) and 16O (600 MeV/n) caused a decrease in left ventricular posterior wall thickness at 3-5 months, but did not change echocardiographic measures of cardiac function. In Pulsed-wave Doppler assessment of the abdominal aorta, an increase was seen in mean velocity, peak velocity, and velocity time integral at 12 months after 16O (600 MeV/n), suggesting a change in vascular function. There were no significant changes in histopathology or histological quantification of total collagens in heart or aorta. On the other hand, an increase was seen in a 75 kDa peptide of collagen type III in the left ventricle of rats exposed to protons (250 MeV) and 16O (600 MeV/n and 1 GeV/n), suggesting that radiation caused remodeling of existing collagens in the heart. 16O (600 MeV/n and 1 GeV/n) caused increases in left ventricular protein levels of immune cell markers CD2, CD4, CD8, and CD68. CONCLUSION: A single low dose of whole body protons or 16O in male Long Evans rats did not change cardiac function or induce gross pathological changes in the heart or aorta, but induced mild changes in vascular function and remodeling of existing collagens in the heart. Altogether, studies in prior mouse models and the current work in rats indicate minor changes in cardiac function and structure after a low dose of single-ion radiation.

INTRODUCTION: Supine positioning during late pregnancy causes dramatic compression of maternal abdominal vasculature and is a risk factor for stillbirth. The azygos vein has been shown to provide collateral circulation in this scenario. There are many well-known anatomical differences in abdominal vasculature between the left and right sides of the body. However, the effect of left and right positioning in pregnancy has not been well studied. MATERIALS AND METHODS: After obtaining ethics approval, 10 women with uncomplicated pregnancies between 34 and 38 weeks gestation underwent magnetic resonance imaging in the left and right lateral positions. Phase contrast images were evaluated to measure blood flow through the abdominal aorta, inferior vena cava, and azygos vein. RESULTS: No significant differences between left and right lateral positions were found in blood flow through the IVC at its formation (mean difference -0.15 L/min [CI -0.47, 0.18], p = .34) or through the azygos vein (mean difference 0.02 L/min [CI -0.22, 0.26], p = .87). Blood flow through the IVC just above the level of the renal veins was found to be reduced by 35% in the right lateral position when compared to the left (mean difference 1.01 L/min [CI 0.25, 1.43], p = .03). There were no significant differences in cardiac output or blood flow through the abdominal aorta. CONCLUSIONS: While it was noted that blood flow through the IVC immediately above the level of the renal veins was reduced in the right lateral position, this did not appear to impact significantly on maternal cardiac output or blood flow through the azygos vein.

Abnormal blood flow and wall shear stress (WSS) can cause and be caused by cardiovascular disease. To date, however, no standard method has been established for mapping WSS in vivo. Here we demonstrate wide-field assessment of WSS in the rabbit abdominal aorta using contrast-enhanced ultrasound image velocimetry (UIV). Flow and WSS measurements were made independent of beam angle, curvature or branching. Measurements were validated in an in silico model of the rabbit thoracic aorta with moving walls and pulsatile flow. Mean errors over a cardiac cycle for velocity and WSS were 0.34 and 1.69%, respectively. In vivo time average WSS in a straight segment of the suprarenal aorta correlated highly with simulations (PC = 0.99) with a mean deviation of 0.29 Pa or 5.16%. To assess fundamental plausibility of the measurement, UIV WSS was compared to an analytic approximation derived from the Poiseuille equation; the discrepancy was 17%. Mapping of WSS was also demonstrated in regions of arterial branching. High time average WSS (TAWSSxz = 3.4 Pa) and oscillatory flow (OSIxz = 0.3) were observed near the origin of conduit arteries. In conclusion, we have demonstrated that contrast-enhanced UIV is capable of measuring spatiotemporal variation in flow velocity, arterial wall location and hence WSS in vivo with high accuracy over a large field of view.

Our study aims to show that perivascular adipose tissue may significantly change the mechanical state of the abdominal aorta. To this end, uniaxial tensile tests with perivascular fat tissue were carried out. In the subsequent regression analysis, stress-strain data were fitted by the polynomial strain energy density. A constitutive model of adipose tissue was used in the analytical simulation of the inflation-extension behavior of the human abdominal aorta. The computational model was based on the theory of the bi-layered thick-walled tube. In addition to the effect of perivascular tissue, the effect of axial prestretch was also studied. It was found that the presence of perivascular tissue reduces the distensibility of the aorta. Axial prestretch applied to the aorta embedded in adipose tissue had an effect opposite to that of adipose tissue. Axially prestrained aorta exhibited higher distensiblity than non-prestrained aorta. It was also shown that the perivascular envelope bears some portion of the pressure loading and thus reduces the mechanical stresses inside the wall of aorta. A similar effect was found for axial prestretch.

BACKGROUND: Displacement Encoding with Stimulated Echoes (DENSE) cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) of the aortic wall offers the potential to improve patient-specific diagnostics and prognostics of diverse aortopathies by quantifying regionally heterogeneous aortic wall strain in vivo. However, before regional mapping of strain can be used to clinically assess aortic pathology, an evaluation of the natural variation of normal regional aortic kinematics is required. METHOD: Aortic spiral cine DENSE CMR was performed at 3 T in 30 healthy adult subjects (range 18 to 65 years) at one or more axial locations that are at high risk for aortic aneurysm or dissection: the infrarenal abdominal aorta (IAA, n = 11), mid-descending thoracic aorta (DTA, n = 17), and/or distal aortic arch (DAA, n = 11). After implementing custom noise-reduction techniques, regional circumferential Green strain of the aortic wall was calculated across 16 sectors around the aortic circumference at each location and normalized by the mean circumferential strain for comparison between individuals. RESULTS: The distribution of normalized circumferential strain (NCS) was heterogeneous for all locations evaluated. Despite large differences in mean strain between subjects, comparisons of NCS revealed consistent patterns of strain distribution for similar groupings of patients by axial location, age, and/or mean displacement angle. NCS at local systole was greatest in the lateral/posterolateral walls in the IAAs (1.47 ± 0.27), medial wall in anteriorly displacing DTAs (1.28 ± 0.20), lateral wall in posteriorly displacing DTAs (1.29 ± 0.29), superior curvature in DAAs < 50 years-old (1.93 ± 0.22), and medial wall in DAAs > 50 years (2.29 ± 0.58). The distribution of strain was strongly influenced by the location of the vertebra and other surrounding structures unique to each location. CONCLUSIONS: Regional in vivo circumferential strain in the adult aorta is unique to each axial location and heterogeneous around its circumference, but can be grouped into consistent patterns defined by basic patient-specific metrics following normalization. The heterogeneous strain distributions unique to each group may be due to local peri-aortic constraints (particularly at the aorto-vertebral interface), heterogeneous material properties, and/or heterogeneous flow patterns. These results must be carefully considered in future studies seeking to clinically interpret or computationally model patient-specific aortic kinematics.

Ultrasound-measured inferior vena cava (IVC) and abdominal aorta (Ao)-associated parameters have been used to predict volume status for decades, yet research focusing on the impact of individual physical characteristics, including gender, height/weight, body surface area (BSA), and age, assessed simultaneously on those parameters in Chinese children is lacking. The aim of the present study was to explore the impact of individual characteristics on maximum IVC diameter (IVCmax), Ao, and IVCmax/Ao in healthy Chinese children. From September to December 2015, 200 healthy children from 1 to 13 years of age were enrolled. IVCmax and Ao diameters were measured by 2D ultrasound. We found that age (years), height (cm), weight (kg), waist circumference (cm), and BSA (m2) were positively correlated with IVCmax and Ao. Multivariate linear regression showed that age was the only independent variable for IVCmax (mm) in female children, height was the only independent variable for IVCmax in male children, and age was the only independent variable for Ao in both females and males. IVCmax/Ao was not significantly influenced by the subjects' characteristics. In conclusion, IVCmax and Ao were more susceptible to subjects' characteristics than IVCmax/Ao. IVCmax/Ao could be a reliable and practical parameter in Chinese children as it was independent of age, height, and weight.

RESUMO

A non-standard surgicall approach in malignant retroperitoneal tumor treatment was used, which includes simultaneous resection and reconstruction of the infrarenal segment of aorta and inferior vena cava. The total vascular recunstrustion time was 40 minutes and 15 minutes out of total time was arterial ischemia. The postoperative period was complicated by the right urethral fistula and the limited fluid concentration in the surgical area. On day 25th of the post-operative period patient discharged from the hospital. We believe that such a tactic can be safe and effective in case of meticulous patients selection and the multidisciplinary and multi-team approaches application.

The paper provides a deepened insight into the role of anisotropy in the analysis of residual stresses in arteries. Residual deformations are modelled following Holzapfel and Ogden (Holzapfel and Ogden 2010, J. R. Soc. Interface 7, 787-799. ( doi:10.1098/rsif.2009.0357 )), which is based on extensive experimental data on human abdominal aortas (Holzapfel et al. 2007, Ann. Biomed. Eng. 35, 530-545. ( doi:10.1007/s10439-006-9252-z )) and accounts for both circumferential and axial residual deformations of the individual layers of arteries-intima, media and adventitia. Each layer exhibits distinctive nonlinear and anisotropic mechanical behaviour originating from its unique microstructure; therefore, we use the most general form of strain-energy function (Holzapfel et al. 2015, J. R. Soc. Interface 12, 20150188. ( doi:10.1098/rsif.2015.0188 )) to derive residual stresses for each layer individually. Finally, the systematic experimental data (Niestrawska et al. 2016, J. R. Soc. Interface 13, 20160620. ( doi:10.1098/rsif.2016.0620 )) on both mechanical and structural properties of the different layers of the human abdominal aorta facilitate our discussion on (i) the importance of anisotropy in modelling residual stresses; (ii) the variability of residual stresses within the same class of tissue, the abdominal aorta; (iii) the limitations of conventional opening angle method to account for complex residual deformations; and (iv) the effect of residual stresses on the loaded configuration of the aorta mimicking in vivo conditions.

BACKGROUND This study aimed to investigate the effects of abdominal aortic transplantation of bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BMMSCs) on the expression of inflammatory cytokines in a rat model of spinal cord ischemia-reperfusion injury. MATERIAL AND METHODS Adult female Sprague-Dawley rats (N=160) were divided into five groups: the sham operation group (N-32); the control group (N=32); the BMMSC transplanted group (N=32); the anti-ciliary neurotrophic factor (CNTF)-treated BMMSC transplanted group (N=32); and the CNTF small interfering RNA (siRNA)-treated BMMSC transplanted group (N=32). Motor behavior was assessed using the Basso, Beattie, and Bresnahan (BBB) locomotor scale. Motor evoked potentials (MEPs) and cortical somatosensory evoked potentials (CSEPs) were measured. Immunohistochemistry, quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR), and Western blot analysis evaluated the expression of spinal inflammatory cytokines. RESULTS Following surgery, compared with the control group the findings in the BMMSC transplant groups included significantly increased BBB scores; the latency and the amplitude of MEP and CSEP were reduced and increased, respectively; spinal neuronal necrosis was reduced; the number of normal neurons increased; CNTF mRNA and protein expression levels increased; expression levels of interleukin-6 (IL-6) were reduced and IL-10 levels were significantly increased (P<0.05). The effects of abdominal aortic BMMSC transplantation were at least partially reversed by both anti-CNTF and CNTF siRNA treatment. CONCLUSIONS In a rat model of spinal cord ischemia-reperfusion injury, abdominal aortic transplantation of BMMSCs increased the expression of CNTF, which improved hindlimb locomotor recovery by regulating the expression of IL-6 and IL-10 to reduce inflammation of the spinal cord.
