Aquaculture is currently the fastest growing food industry globally, and proposed expansion plans include substantial increases in production over the next decades. While this will improve global food security, contribute to the blue economy and create jobs locally, the potential negative impacts on the marine environment could be massive. The existing literature suggests that further research needs to be conducted into the dynamic nature of the social-ecological systems which host aquaculture. This paper presents the results of a choice experiment survey of Norwegian households' trade-offs between salmon production and job creation, and the detrimental impacts on the marine environment. Most respondents were at the outset neutral or supportive of plans for a substantial increase in aquaculture production. However, when informed about potential environmental impacts in terms of marine plastics and salmon lice affecting wild salmon stocks, and asked to trade these off against the positive effects, the majority opposed the plans and expressed a positive willingness-to-pay to avoid the planned expansion. Applying a hybrid mixed multinomial logit model we find that income, education and to some extent age, along with environmental attitudes, explain most of the variation in people's preferences. Support for large aquaculture expansion is higher among people who consume farmed salmon frequently and those living in areas with a high density of aquaculture farms. Hence, we do not find the so-called "not in my backyard" (NIMBY) effect. These results, which arguably contrast with previous studies of environmental impacts from aquaculture, can be useful for public planners globally as they consider expanding the blue economy.

A new sensitive and selective gas chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (GC-MS/MS) method was developed for the analysis of 26 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), including 16 Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and 15 + 1 European Union (EU) PAHs, in mussel samples from aquaculture farms in Thermaikos and Strymonian Gulf, Central Macedonia Region, in three sampling periods. Concentrations were found at moderate to low values at all sampling sites, without exceeding maximum levels set by EU. Low molecular weight PAHs were predominant in all samples. Seasonal variation of the concentrations was observed; values were slightly higher in the winter period. Use of diagnostic ratios for potential sources of PAHs showed both petrogenic and pyrolitic origin. In comparison to other related studies of mussels from the Mediterranean Sea, Greek mussels cultivated in the studied gulfs are low in contaminants due to minimal environmental pollution effects. Low concentrations of PAHs are in compliance with the low values of other POPs which were found in the mussels.

Mortality in Norwegian salmonid aquaculture has a major influence on fish welfare and represents economic losses for producers. We reviewed the estimated monthly mortality for freshwater farms with Atlantic salmon and rainbow trout between 2011 and 2019. We built a regression model for mortality which included the variables year, weight group, season, region and farm. Additionally, we distributed questionnaires to farmers to gather information regarding potential causes of mortalities. The analysis of data for Atlantic salmon showed that median monthly mortality increased from 0.15% in 2011 (interquartile range [IQR]: 0.06-0.39) to 0.25% (IQR: 0.1-0.67) in 2019. Mortality was highest in the North (0.27%, IQR: 0.11-0.72) and lowest in the Southwest region (0.16%, IQR: 0.07-0.4). The season with highest mortality was summer (0.24%, IQR: 0.1-0.64), while winter had the lowest (0.12%, IQR: 0.05-0.35). The smallest fish (3-12 g) showed highest mortality (0.31%, IQR: 0.14-0.69) compared to heavier fish. Results from the questionnaire showed that infectious or non-infectious diseases were the most commonly reported causes of mortality. The mortality patterns described in this study identifies several important risk factors. Highlighting causal links is an important step to reducing mortality and improving welfare in the freshwater production phase of salmonids in Norway.

Infectious spleen and kidney necrosis virus (ISKNV) is a fish-pathogenic virus belonging to the genus Megalocytivirus of the family Iridoviridae. In 2018, disease occurrences (40-50% cumulative mortality) associated with ISKNV infection were reported in grown-out Asian sea bass (Lates calcarifer) cultured in an inland freshwater system in Thailand. Clinical samples were collected from seven distinct farms located in the eastern and central regions of Thailand. The moribund fish showed various abnormal signs, including lethargy, pale gills, darkened body, and skin hemorrhage, while hypertrophied basophilic cells were observed microscopically in gill, liver, and kidney tissue. ISKNV infection was confirmed on six out of seven farms using virus-specific semi-nested PCR. The MCP and ATPase genes showed 100% sequence identity among the virus isolates, and the virus was found to belong to the ISKNV genotype I clade. Koch's postulates were later confirmed by challenge assay, and the mortality of the experimentally infected fish at 21 days post-challenge was 50-90%, depending on the challenge dose. The complete genome of two ISKNV isolates, namely KU1 and KU2, was recovered directly from the infected specimens using a shotgun metagenomics approach. The genome length of ISKNV KU1 and KU2 was 111,487 and 111,610 bp, respectively. In comparison to closely related ISKNV strains, KU1 and KU2 contained nine unique genes, including a caspase-recruitment-domain-containing protein that is potentially involved in inhibition of apoptosis. Collectively, this study indicated that inland cultured Asian sea bass are infected by homologous ISKNV strains. This indicates that ISKNV genotype I should be prioritized for future vaccine research.

In 2019, it was estimated that more than 50 million captive Atlantic salmon in Norway died in the final stage of their production in marine cages. This mortality represents a significant economic loss for producers and a need to improve welfare for farmed salmon. Single adverse events, such as algal blooms or infectious disease outbreaks, can explain mass mortality in salmon cages. However, little is known about the production, health, or environmental factors that contribute to their baseline mortality during the sea phase. Here we conducted a retrospective study including 1627 Atlantic salmon cohorts put to sea in 2014-2019. We found that sea lice treatments were associated with Atlantic salmon mortality. In particular, the trend towards non-medicinal sea lice treatments, including thermal delousing, increases Atlantic salmon mortality in the same month the treatment is applied. There were differences in mortality among production zones. Stocking month and weight were other important factors, with the lowest mortality in smaller salmon stocked in August-October. Sea surface temperature and salinity also influenced Atlantic salmon mortality. Knowledge of what affects baseline mortality in Norwegian aquaculture can be used as part of syndromic surveillance and to inform salmon producers on farming practices that can reduce mortality.

The present study was conducted to compare the growth performance, feed efficiency, nitrogen retention, water quality, biofloc nutritional composition, and hematological profile of Nile tilapia Oreochromis niloticus fingerlings cultured in biofloc technology (BFT) and recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS) over a period of 60 days. This randomized study was designed with two treatments (BFT and RAS) and four replicates. Fish (n = 64; 7.29 ± 0.67) were allocated in eight 150 L aquaria kept at 26.72 ± 0.35 °C and fed until apparent satiation three times daily. Weight gain, apparent feed conversion ratio, and protein efficiency of fish in BFT were statistically superior than in RAS. There were no differences (p > 0.05) for temperature, dissolved oxygen, and nitrogen compounds, indicating similarity in the water quality between BFT and RAS. Furthermore, hematological parameters did not show differences (p > 0.05) between the systems. The chemical composition of biofloc differed (p < 0.05) over the experimental period for crude protein and mineral matter. The best responses of growth performance and feed efficiency of Nile tilapia fingerlings in BFT highlight the importance of bioflocs as a high biological value complementary feed.

The consumption of high-quality diverse diets is crucial for optimal growth, health, and wellbeing. OBJECTIVE: This study assessed the diet quality of households by their type of engagement in homestead aquaculture and/or horticulture. Socio-demographic determinants of diet quality were also studied. METHOD: Diet quality was assessed using a nutrient adequacy ratio (NAR), based on the preceding 7 days' dietary recall at the household level. Adult male equivalent units (AMEs) were used for age- and sex-specific intra-household distribution of household intakes. Mean adequacy ratios (MAR) were computed as an overall measure of diet quality, using NAR. RESULTS: Better diet quality (mean ± SD) was associated with households engaged in both homestead aquaculture and horticulture (0.43 ± 0.23; p < 0.001) compared to only one type of agriculture (0.38 ± 0.20) or none (0.36 ± 0.20). Tukey's post-hoc test confirmed significant differences in diet quality between both and either engagement (0.05 ± 0.01, p < 0.001), both and no engagement (0.07 ± 0.01, p < 0.001), and either and no engagement households (0.02 ± 0.01, p < 0.001). Beyond farm production of nutrient-rich foods, generalized estimating equations showed that diet quality was influenced by the higher educational level and occupation of adult household members, higher daily per capita food expenditure, sex, family size and region. CONCLUSIONS: Projects that promote and support household engagement in both homestead aquaculture and horticulture have the potential to improve the diet quality of households.

Fish production has been practiced since ancient Egypt and China. It has become a fast-growing agricultural sector that provides animal protein for most people globally. While China is the leading country in the world, Egypt and Nigeria stand on the top in Africa. The overall fishery production potential of Ethiopian water bodies is estimated to be 94,500 tons per year, while the actual production is 38,370 tons. Despite more water bodies and more fish diversity in the region, fish production and marketing is very low. This review is undertaken to assess the main factors affecting fish production and the marketing chain in Gambella region. Despite the known water and fish potential of the region, fish production is very low. Major factors contributing to a reduction in fish production in the region include inefficient fishing gears, poor transportation access, poor postharvest handling, low price at the landing site, and improper market place. Drying is the predominant postharvest technique and fishing methods are of a subsistence basis. All the fishing activities take place in the natural environment, and aquaculture is not yet established. Enough modern and efficient gears need to be made available. Other modern postharvest handling techniques need to be introduced to ensure a longer shelf life of fish after harvest. Infrastructures need to be constructed to access all water bodies in the region. Because the region has such water resource potential and incredible fish species diversity, the aquaculture needs to be established and popularized. Traceability needs to be adopted in the region to prevent food-borne diseases. Based on this paper, the government and other stakeholders could develop policy considering the issue of the fishery status of the region.

Fish production systems in North-western Nigeria have a significant role in food, nutrition and income generations to families, yet an important setup for zoonotic disease transmission. The aim of this study was to provide a broad knowledge of the structure, activities and food safety risks of the fish value chains operating in North-western Nigeria using the value chain framework. A total of 16 focus groups and 8 key informant interviews were conducted to gather data from fish producers, fish sellers and fish processors in selected peri-urban and rural settlements in Kaduna State. In addition, 129 semi-structured questionnaires and observation checklists were used in this study to gather evidence-based data, such as demography of value chain actors, product characterization, and food safety risks. The fish value-chain in North-western Nigeria is characterised by four main stakeholders, namely, fish producers, transporters, as well as raw- and processed-fish-sellers (wholesalers, retailers). Two major sources were identified supplying farmed fish to North-western Nigeria: the distributors from the central and southern part of the country and the fish farmers within the North-western and North-eastern regions of Nigeria. Raw-fish-wholesalers within the two major markets sold most of their high-value products to raw-fish-retailers, while low-value products were routed to raw-fish-retailers in the rural communities, processed-fish-retailers and household consumers in rural settlements. There were no large companies operating and no differentiation of chains between aquaculture and wild fishery. Raw fishes not sold and began to rot were sold to street vendors at a cheaper price and household consumers. Fish production and supply chains were characterised by poor structural and sanitary support for food safety and hygiene measures. Food safety risks identified were related to lack of biosecurity measures in fish farms, lack of cold chain and access to running water, poor hygiene practices by all handlers, lack of fish inspection at all levels, lack of use of protective clothing and limited health inspection of handlers. In overall, government control of activities in fish value chains was relatively poor leading to the absence of food safety regulatory enforcement characterised by lack of institutional goals on improving food safety measures in a chain-wide distribution. Hence, this study points the significant structural, sanitary and hygiene limitations along the fish value chain components. It provides a baseline for microbial food safety risk assessments, and information required for policy-making regarding implementation of disease control programmes, as the sector is fast-evolving in Sub-Saharan Africa.

Southeast (SE) Asia plays an important role in global food security as this region has been regarded as one of the major producers of aquaculture product and, to date, freshwater fish accounted for one-third of the total aquaculture in SE Asia. The intensification of freshwater farming corresponding to increase of consumer demands has inevitably led to the emergence and re-emergence of diseases causing tremendous economic loss in the region. Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) and striped catfish (Pangasianodon hypophthalmus), the major freshwater fish species of SE Asia, have been reported susceptible to several bacterial pathogens, e.g. Streptococcus agalactiae, Edwardsiella ictalurid and Flavobacterium columnare. Since only a limited number of vaccines being registered and marketed, these pathogenic organisms still represent a severe threat to aquaculture industry in SE Asia. However, there is profound advancement in the understanding of disease epidemiology, pathogenic mechanisms, teleost mucosal immunity and vaccine delivery system over the last few years. This review aimed to summarize those recent findings which hopefully can provide novel insight into the future development of suitable vaccine and vaccination regime against bacterial infection in SE Asia region.

The negative environmental and economic impacts of many invasive species are well known. However, given the increased homogenization of global biota, and the difficulty of eradicating species once established, a balanced approach to considering the impacts of invasive species is needed. The marbled crayfish (Procambarus virginalis) is a parthenogenetic freshwater crayfish that was first observed in Madagascar around 2005 and has spread rapidly. We present the results of a socio-economic survey (n = 385) in three regions of Madagascar that vary in terms of when the marbled crayfish first arrived. Respondents generally considered marbled crayfish to have a negative impact on rice agriculture and fishing, however the animals were seen as making a positive contribution to household economy and food security. Regression modeling showed that respondents in regions with longer experience of marbled crayfish have more positive perceptions. Unsurprisingly, considering the perception that crayfish negatively impact rice agriculture, those not involved in crayfish harvesting and trading had more negative views towards the crayfish than those involved in crayfish-related activities. Food preference ranking and market surveys revealed the acceptance of marbled crayfish as a cheap source of animal protein; a clear positive in a country with widespread malnutrition. While data on biodiversity impacts of the marbled crayfish invasion in Madagascar are still completely lacking, this study provides insight into the socio-economic impacts of the dramatic spread of this unique invasive species. Singapore's Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) national strategic action plan includes inappropriate use of antimicrobials in food-producing animals as a specific priority. Although the use of antibiotics and other drugs are monitored by regulatory bodies, food fish farmers are allowed to buy and administer antimicrobials without a veterinary prescription. We conducted a qualitative study of Singaporean food fish farmers to understand patterns and determinants of antibiotic use, their knowledge of antibiotic resistance, as well as perceptions of on-farm infection prevention and control measures. During the interview, participants were asked about their farming processes, farm infrastructure, antibiotic use and any disease prevention measures. Thematic analysis of participants' interviews showed that antibiotic for growth promotion and infection prevention was uncommon among local food fish farmers. The following three main themes influenced participants' decisions to use antibiotics in their practice: 1) individual factors, 2) local regulatory factors as well as 3) market-related factors. Individual factors included their personal experience and knowledge both with antibiotics as well as with alternate options. In terms of local regulatory factors, we found that regular oversight was a strong deterrent in antibiotic use. Last, at the market level, the relatively high price of antibiotics in Singapore coupled with stiff competition was a strong disincentive for participants to use antibiotics in their farming practice. These factors were also influential in their relationships with local regulatory bodies as well as their counterparts. Although industries differ significantly across countries, lessons learnt from Singapore's food fish farming demonstrate the importance of an environment where multi-dimensional factors come together to discourage the irrational use of antibiotics in food animal production. In addition, our results allow greater insight into food fish farmers' perspectives on infection control and form a basis from which further research work can be undertaken.

The use of antibiotics in livestock production is considered a major driver of antibiotic resistance on a global scale. In Vietnam, small- and medium-scale livestock producers dominate the domestic market and regulatory pushes have done little to decrease antibiotic use. In order to inform future policy directions, this study aims to explore knowledge, attitudes, and practices amongst livestock producers to identify their perspectives on antibiotic use and resistance. A total of 392 small- and medium-scale producers specialized in pig, poultry and aquaculture production participated in the study. The results showed that the primary reason for antibiotic use reported by producers was for the treatment of infections (69%). However, prophylactic use was also evident, with farmers reporting other reasons for antibiotic use such as "animals display abnormal symptoms or behaviour" (55%), the "weather is about to change" (25%), or "animals on neighboring farms fall ill" (27%). Only one-fifth of producers demonstrated favorable attitudes towards antibiotic use and preventing antibiotic resistance. Moreover, administering antibiotics remained the preferred countermeasure directly applied by farmers at the first indication of disease (17%), compared to enacting hygiene (10%) or quarantine (5%) measures. The results showed divergent trends amongst producers, with pig producers demonstrating higher levels of knowledge, more favorable attitudes, and higher self-reported utilization of good practice. Better knowledge, attitudes, and practices were also associated with producers who engaged in efforts to explore information on antibiotic use and resistance, which improved incrementally with the number of sources consulted and hours invested. However, there were some areas where increased knowledge or more favorable attitude scores did not translate into better practices. For instance, producers with higher levels of formal education performed significantly better than those with lower education in terms of knowledge and attitude, though both groups reported similar practices. The findings of this study may support future interventions to prevent both antibiotic misuse and the development of antimicrobial resistance.

This study describes antibiotic use by small-scale freshwater aquaculture farmers in the upper Mekong Delta in southwestern Vietnam and the knowledge and practices surrounding the cause and prevention of aquaculture disease in that region. Forty five farmers were included in the study, of which 19 (42%) cultivated tilapia Oreochromis spp., 13 (29%) Striped Catfish Pangasianodon hypophthalmus and 13 (29%) giant river prawns Macrobrachium rosenbergii. Antibiotics were used by farmers of tilapia and Striped Catfish (84% and 69% of farmers, respectively), but not by any of the prawn farmers. Most farmers (72%) used antibiotics for around 3 d when treating diseases, depending on the farmers' economic means and whether the fish recovered, as judged by the farmer. If farmers perceived that the antibiotic treatment had failed, the most common response was to change to another type of antibiotic. Some farmers also used antibiotics in the absence of clinical symptoms as a preventive measure. In the absence of rapid, cost-effective diagnostics, the likelihood for the incorrect use of antibiotics is high, which has implications for antibiotic resistance. Moreover, the sequential use of different antibiotics following therapeutic failure is a risk factor for the emergence of resistance. All farmers that were surveyed were aware of the risks associated with antibiotic use. This may lead to successful intervention toward reduced antibiotic use in freshwater fish farming in Vietnam.

The occurrence and estrogenic activities of seven phenolic endocrine-disrupting chemical (EDC) compounds (nonylphenol (NP), octylphenol (4-OP), 2,4-dichlorophenol (2,4-DCP), 4-tertbutylphenol (4-t-BP), 4-tert-octylphenol (4-t-OP), tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA), and bisphenol A (BPA)) in the sediments of Qingduizi Bay (NorthernYellow Sea, China) in superficial sediments were investigated to evaluate their potential ecological impacts on the health of aquaculture organisms. All compounds, except 4-OP and 4-t-BP, were recorded in most sampling sites (1.06-28.07 ng g-1 dw in maricultural ponds (MPs), 1.98-8.22 ng g-1 dw in outer bay (OB)). BPA and 4-t-OP were the predominant EDC compounds in MPs and OB, respectively. Correlation between BPA and 4-t-OP indicated these compounds may share a similar source or pathway. Analyzed estrogenic activity revealed a low risk of total EDCs. The ranking of risk quotient showed 4-t-OP posed a median risk and TBBPA posed a high risk to the aquatic ecosystem.

Information on occupational health and safety practices in Brazilian aquaculture is limited. This paper reports preliminary results from an online survey based on research questions to identify occupational hazards, risk assessment practices, and prevention measures adopted in Brazilian aquaculture. Data were collected through an online questionnaire, comprising 25 questions, on a voluntary and anonymous basis. Aquaculture stakeholders were invited to participate in the study through email and social media channels. The demographic data demonstrated that the majority of respondents were men (72%) and having a higher education (95%). Most respondents employed administrative controls and personal protective equipment (PPE) rather than substitution and other risk elimination measures to reduce exposure. The most commonly adopted measures were PPE use (87%), adequate handling of chemicals (86%), and imparting knowledge of risks (90%). However, only 12% of participants reported the presence of safety protocols at their workplace, and 17% had some form of immunization of workers. In this study, it was possible to identify a lack of hazard signage in the workplace and lack of occupational health and safety training. The results further indicate that risk management in aquaculture continues to be a challenge in low-income countries. Aquaculture farmers should be encouraged and supported in adopting measures and appropriate technologies to eliminate risks in Brazilian aquaculture.

Aerator is an indispensable tool in aquaculture, and China is one of the largest aquaculture countries in the world. So, the intelligent control of the aerator is of great significance to energy conservation and environmental protection and the prevention of the deterioration of dissolved oxygen. There is no intelligent aerator related work in practice and research. In this paper, we mainly study the intelligent aerator control based on deep learning, and propose a dissolved oxygen prediction algorithm with long and short term memory network, referred as DopLSTM. The prediction results are used to the intelligent control design of the aerator. As a result, it is proved that the intelligent control of the aerator can effectively reduce the power consumption and prevent the deterioration of dissolved oxygen.

Aquaculture accounts for an extremely valuable and rapidly expanding sector of global food production, yet its environmental impacts on aquatic ecosystems have attracted much concern. In this study, we collected water samples from eastern Lake Taihu, China. We targeted sites varying in their intensity of aquacultural activities and sampled them over multiple seasons. For each sample, we measured physicochemical variables, and we sequenced the 16S rRNA gene of the respective bacterial communities using an Illumina second-generation sequencing platform. Marked differences in diversity and bacterial community composition were observed between seasons, whereas we observed relatively weak differences between sites. Remarkable differences in the abundance of the bacterial community were observed at the phylum and genus levels across the different seasons. Stochastic processes dominated the assembly of bacterial communities in the aquaculture-influenced systems, and the assembly processes of bacterial community differed between seasons. Our observations highlight the effect of seasonality on bacterial communities and provide a more complete knowledge base for the proper assessment of the effects of aquacultural activities on freshwater ecosystems.

Vibrio parahaemolyticus is the most common pathogen causing seafood-borne illnesses in Korea. The present study evaluated the occurrence, virulence, and antimicrobial resistance of V. parahaemolyticus in seawater and bivalves obtained in 2016 from the southern coast of Korea, an important region for commercial aquaculture industries, especially the Korean raw seafood culture. V. parahaemolyticus was detected in 87 of 160 (54.4%) bivalve samples and in 32 of 130 (24.5%) seawater samples. Especially high levels were detected during summer to early autumn. All the seawater and bivalves contained less than 2 and 5% of the tdh and trh genes of the isolates, respectively, and seawater isolates possessed two fewer genes than the bivalve isolates. Of 23 antimicrobials tested, three agents (ofloxacin, norfloxacin, and trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole) effectively treated V. parahaemolyticus illness due to the sensitivity of the isolates. The isolates were highly resistant to ampicillin, however, excluding it as a treatment option. More than half of the isolates exhibited resistance to at least three antimicrobials. These findings indicate the importance of an integrated monitoring and surveillance program noting the occurrence, virulence, and antimicrobial resistance patterns of V. parahaemolyticus in various aquatic sources for preventing human health risks from seafood consumption.
