RESUMO

Epistyliasis has been characterized as an emergent disease which has a great impact on fish farms, especially on Oreochromis niloticus production systems. Although epidemiological important, information about the dispersion of these parasites and their mechanical vectors is scarce. The present study reported the cooccurrence of Epistylis sp. as an epibiont of Dolops carvalhoi, a parasitic crustacean of cultivated/wild specimens (from accidental release) of O. niloticus from a cage fish farm area in the Ilha Solteira Reservoir, Grande River, SP, Brazil. The co-occurrence of Epistylis sp. and D. carvalhoi, and their epibiont relationship registered in this study suppose that the Epistylis may use the crustaceans for dispersion and as mechanical vectors for the dissemination of diseases in wild and cultivated hosts. Moreover, exchange of parasites between wild and cultivated hosts is possible, considering both organisms (protozoan and argulid). Furthermore, the results of the present study demonstrate the need to monitor the areas adjacent to cage fish farms as a preventive measure for the dispersion of pathogens. This is the first report of epibiosis between Epistylis sp. and argulid parasites of cultivated and wild O. niloticus, contributing to knowledge about host-parasite specificity, geographical distribution, dispersion of etiological agents and epidemiology in aquaculture.

Resumo Epistilíase tem sido caracterizada como uma doença emergente de grande impacto nas pisciculturas, especialmente em sistemas de produção de Oreochromis niloticus. Embora seja importante epidemiologicamente, informações sobre a dispersão desses parasitas e seus vetores mecânicos são escassos. O presente estudo relata a coocorrência de Epistylis sp. como um epibionte de Dolops carvalhoi, um crustáceo parasita de espécimes cultivados e silvestres (de escapes acidentais) de O. niloticus em área de piscicultura de tanques-rede no reservatório de Ilha Solteira, Rio Grande, SP, Brasil. A coocorrência de Epistylis sp. e D. carvalhoi, e sua relação epibionte registrada neste estudo, supõem que Epistylis sp. possa utilizar os crustáceos para dispersão e como vetores mecânicos para a disseminação de doenças em hospedeiros silvestres e cultivados. Além disso, a troca de parasitas entre hospedeiros silvestres e cultivados é possível, considerando ambos os organismos (protozoários e argulídeos). Os resultados deste estudo, também demonstram a necessidade de monitorar as áreas adjacentes às pisciculturas como medida preventiva para a dispersão de patógenos. Este é o primeiro relato de epibiose entre Epistylis sp. e parasitas argulídeos de O. niloticus cultivados e silvestres, contribuindo para o conhecimento da especificidade parasitária do hospedeiro, distribuição geográfica, dispersão de agentes etiológicos e epidemiologia na aquicultura.

Chonopeltis Thiele, 1900 presently comprises 14 species, it is endemic to Africa and its species show a high degree of host-specificity towards fish families and in some cases, individual fish species. Chonopeltis meridionalis Fryer, 1964 was originally described from Labeo rosae Steindachner collected in the River Nuanetsi in Rhodesia, now Zimbabwe, Limpopo River System. At the time of description C. meridionalis was the most southerly species of the genus. Chonopeltis victori Avenant-Oldewage, 1991 was described from the River Olifants, Mpumalanga, South Africa, which also forms part of the Limpopo River System. The host fish was Labeo rosae and Labeobarbus marequensis (A. Smith), whilst C. koki Van As, 1992 was described from Labeo cylindricus Peters, collected in the River Zambezi, Eastern Caprivi, Namibia. During surveys conducted in 2012, additional material of a species of Chonopeltis was collected from Labeo rosae in the River Olifants. Upon closer examination, the new material was identified as C. meridionalis. Further investigation revealed that C. victori and C. koki share a number of characteristics with C. meridionalis. This paper provides the first scanning electron microscopy of C. meridionalis, includes additional information on fully-mature as well as sub-adult males and females. Finally, it was concluded that C. victori and C. koki are junior synonyms of C. meridionalis.

We have created barcode library for common Argulus spp. infecting Carassius auratus, which could also be used to identify premature forms of Argulus spp. even by non-professionals. Infected C. auratus was examined and purchased from ornamental fish-trading centers and the adult life stage of Argulus spp. was identified and DNA barcoded. The eggs of Argulus spp. were collected using bottle implants. The collected eggs are barcoded and precisely identified by matching with the adult sequences. Four species of adult Argulus spp. were identified, namely Argulus japonicus, Argulus indicus, Argulus siamensis, and Argulus foliaceus. Precise identification of egg samples was done by two different analyses, namely (i) BLAST analysis and (ii) phylogenetic clustering of adults and eggs. All egg samples including the control were precisely identified by BLAST analysis and the results are consistent with phylogenetic clustering of adult and egg's DNA barcodes. In order to establish the DNA barcode technology for the identification of all Argulus spp and its premature forms, the development of full-fledged barcode library that includes all species of this genus is very important for the benefit of ornamental fish industries.

Dipteropeltis is a monotypic genus of the Branchiura and endemic to South America. Twelve specimens of Dipteropeltis sp. and micrographs of a thirteenth specimen were obtained from four institutions. Measurements and light micrographs were taken of all the specimens. The specimens were compared to all known descriptions of D. hirundo and sorted into two groups, those that conformed to the description of D. hirundo; and those that differed morphologically. Two specimens, one from each group¸ were stained with lignin pink and subsequently prepared for Scanning Electron Microscopy. The differences observed in the specimens indicated that a new species exists. Thus, Dipteropeltis campanaformis n. sp. is described from seven specimens collected from two characiform benthopelagic fish species and compared to D. hirundo. Dipteropeltis campanaformis n. sp. differs from D. hirundo in the head shape, the length and shape of the carapace lobes, the membrane composition of the maxillules, the shape of the maxillae, the shape of the mouth, and the shape of the natatory lobes.

RESUMO

The current information on the branchiuran Dolops bidentata, a species described more one hundred years ago, is valid but incomplete; hence, an expanded description is given herein. Additional morphological information was obtained by light and scanning electron microscopy from specimens collected on Pygocentrus nattereri from the Poconé Wetland, MT, Brazil. Description of the appendages and other structures such as respiratory area, mouth, details and ornamentation of antennules and maxillae are provided for the first time.

This study investigated the genetic variability within fish louse Argulus japonicus (Crustacea: Branchiura) from Africa, Middle East, and Asia by polymerase chain reaction in three mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) regions, namely, cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 (cox1) and NADH dehydrogenase subunits 1 and 4 (nad1 and nad4). Six different sequences from a portion of the cox1 gene (pcox1) and a portion of the nad1 and nad4 genes (pnad1 and pnad4) for ten adult specimens from infected fish in China, Egypt, and Syria were amplified separately from individual and the amplicons were subjected to direct sequencing. A + T percentages were 68.8-69% for pcox1, 77.1-77.6% for pnad1, and 60.4-60.9% for pnad4. Among all the collected parasites, A. japonicus sequence variations were 0.0-1.9% for cox1, 0.0-2.3% for nad1, and 0.0-0.8% for nad4. In rivers, sequence variations among all individuals were 0.4-0.8% for cox1, 1.0-2.3% for nad1, and 0.4-0.8% for nad4, while sequence variations among all the collected parasites in fish farms were 0.6-1.9% for cox1, 0.0-1.7% for nad1, and 0.2-0.6% for nad4. The nad1 was the most variable gene among selected markers, while nad4 was a more conserved gene than cox1. All isolates of A. japonicus were sister to Argulus americanus in phylogenetic tree and they grouped together in one sub-clade, while isolates from China and Egypt fish farms were closely clustered together. However, moderate genetic drift and slight mutation could be observed among A. japonicus individuals. These findings demonstrated the convenience and attributes of the three selected mtDNA sequences for population genetic studies of A. japonicus where nad1 is a new and reliable marker to detect the sequence variation among A. japonicus individuals.

The Branchiura are fish ectoparasites which include the well-known and very commonly found genus Argulus. But the Branchiura also contains the monotypic genus Dipteropeltis, about which only very little is known. In this investigation of two female paratype specimens we describe for the first time the external morphology of Dipteropeltis based on Scanning Electron Microscopy. We show that Dipteropeltis has a pre-oral spine, unique suction disc support structures, an Argulus-like mouth cone and second maxillae with a combination of features seen in both Argulus and Chonopeltis. These data are compared with data from the three remaining branchiuran genera Dolops, Chonopeltis and Argulus and discussed in a phylogenetic context based on a recently proposed phylogeny of the group.

Argulus japonicus Thiele, 1900 was originally described from China, but has spread to Europe, Africa, Australia, and North America. An ultrastructural description of A. japanicus has been done as one of the most common fish ectoparasites which has a high affect on fish life. The description was based on light and scanning electron microscopes studies using 13 females and 7 males which were collected from Shunde city in Guangdong Province, China. Typical Argulus body and body's appendages are associated with our specimens, carapace covers fourth leg, and scales separate uniformly on frontal and lateral lobes, ventral surface of thorax is ornamented by scales contrary of the dorsal surface which is quite smooth, various shapes of scales have been detected on second maxillae. Location and structure of copulatory accessory, number and structure of overlapping sclerites of sucking disk rim, melanophores patches of male, second swimming leg structure, and parasite's total size are the most important criteria which may be used to distinguish between male and female. Moreover, new classification criteria of Argulide, obtained by scanning electron microscopic study of previous species, are discussed.

RESUMO

Five ectoparasites were collected during the period of 2002-2005 from fish of Mediterranean Sea, Aegean Sea and inland waters of Turkey: Four crustaceans [Ergasilus mosulensis and Pennella instructa (Copepoda), Ceratothoa steindachneri (Isopoda) and Argulus foliaceus (Branchiura)] and one Annelida (Piscicola geometra) were found. The species, E. mosulensis, P. instructa and C. steindachneri have been reported for first time in Turkish waters, and A. foliaceus and P. geometra for the time from the Cavusçu Lake.

In this study, metazoan parasites of bream (Abramis brama Linnaeus, 1758) in the Lake Durusu (Terkos) were investigated between June 2002 and May 2003. During this study, a total of 67 bream were examined for the presence of metazoan parasites. Ten species of parasites were found on 64 of the 67 fish examined. These parasites are: Dactylogyrus sphyrna (Linstow, 1878) and D. distinguendus (Nybelin, 1936) Monogenoidea, Caryophyllaeus laticeps (Pallas, 1781) Cestoidea, Tetracotyle sp, Diplostomum sp. and Tylodelphys clavata (Nordmann, 1832) metacercaria Trematoda, Eustrongylides excisus (Jagerskiöld, 1909) Nematoda, Piscicola geometra (Linnaeus, 1758) Hirudinea, glochidia of mollusk, Bivalvia, Argulus foliaceus (L., 1758) Crustacea. Diplostomum sp., Dactylogyrus sphyrna and D. distinguendus were found to be the dominant parasites of A. brama. Both the prevalence and intensity of other parasites were not found to be high. All identified parasites are a new finding for A. brama in the Lake Durusu. This is the first time that D. distinguendus has been identified in Turkey.
