Jules Pean (1830-1898)-A Pioneer Surgeon: His Achievements and His Total Shoulder Arthroplasty.

The purpose of this study is to summarize the life and work of the French surgeon Jules Pean (1830-1898). Pean made an impact in the history of surgery through his work and especially with his innovative surgical techniques in abdominal surgery and in orthopedics as well as with the invention of numerous surgical instruments. He also made an impact with his pioneering total shoulder arthroplasty.

The first shoulder replacement in Ancient Greek Mythology: The story of Pelops, King of Elis.

Medical science and the need for the treatment of diseases and injuries, is as old as human history. This research aims to identify and study the first registered shoulder replacement in Ancient Greek Mythology. After a review of literature, the texts that referred to the myth of Pelops' ivory shoulder were identified and analysed, as were the texts which contain the first citation for shoulder replacement in the prehistoric era.

Prostheses for reverse total shoulder arthroplasty.

INTRODUCTION: Historically, patients with rotator cuff arthropathy had limited reconstructive options. The early generations of reverse total shoulder arthroplasty (rTSA) designs had increased failure rates due to loosening of glenoid baseplates secondary to excessive torques. In 1985, Paul Grammont introduced a prosthetic design changing the center of rotation that addressed this major complication. The Grammont principles remain the foundation of modern reverse total shoulder prostheses, although the original design has undergone several adaptations. We reviewed here the various aspects of prosthetic designs including baseplates, glenospheres, humeral components, and polyethylene bearing interfaces. AREAS COVERED: We discuss the evolution, biomechanics, prosthetic options, and future direction for rTSA. A literature search using the PubMed database including review articles, biomechanical studies, and clinical trials pertaining to rTSA prothesis and outcomes. EXPERT COMMENTARY: Despite an expansion in the understanding of the biomechanics of the rotator cuff deficient shoulder and its effect on the reverse total shoulder prostheses, Grammont principles remain the foundation of contemporary rTSA designs. Further clinical studies are needed to assess how modern prosthetic modifications effect clinical and radiographic outcomes. Additionally, implants are being used in younger individuals with expanded indications, therefore, close clinical monitoring is needed to better evaluate their prosthetic longevity.

Distal biceps tendon history, updates, and controversies: from the closed American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons meeting-2015.

Understanding of the distal biceps anatomy, mechanics, and biology during the last 75 years has greatly improved the physician's ability to advise and to treat patients with ruptured distal tendons. The goal of this paper is to review the past and current advances on complete distal biceps ruptures as well as controversies and future directions that were discussed and debated during the closed American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons meeting in 2015.
