RESUMO
The basic concepts, evolution and practice of health planning are described, in the context of WHO role. Special emphasis is given to the Cendes-OPS methodology, to be this procedure a more specific, articulated and implemented widely in the American region. Finally, future projections of these activities are given.

A short history of the disease and its vaccination is described. The role of WHO and its country members is underlined, in this unique triumph of the history of medicine. The success of the implementation of the programme and its monitoring of the epidemiological situation of the disease to the final declaration of the WHO 1980, of smallpox eradication, are analyzed.

The history, objectives and aims of this programme are described in detail. The principal goals achieved on anticonception, reproductive biology and abortion are analyzed, with special reference to the research done in Chile. The strengthening of research capabilities at national level was pointed out with special mention to the Chilean case.

A brief history of the tuberculosis control programme is described. The basic issues of the programme, like BCG vaccination and case-finding are analyzed and the role of the specific Expert Committee is pointed out. Special emphasis on the task of PAHO and the Chilean participation was considered very important. The relationship between tuberculosis and HIV infection and AIDS is underlined as an emergent and relevant aspect of the epidemiological situation of tuberculosis, a real problem in the future.
