RESUMO

Evaluation of bone marrow aspirate smear and trephine biopsy specimens is critical to the diagnosis of benign and malignant hematologic conditions. Digital pathology has the potential to revolutionize bone marrow assessment through implementation of artificial intelligence for assisted and automated evaluation, but there remain many barriers toward this implementation. This article reviews the current state of digital evaluation of bone marrow aspirate smears and trephine biopsies, recent research using machine learning models for automated specimen analysis, an outline of the advantages and barriers facing clinical implementation of artificial intelligence, and a potential vision of artificial intelligence-associated bone marrow evaluation.

A 32-year-old patient complained of three slow-growing subcutaneous nodules on her right labius majus, present for 3 years. Her past medical history was unremarkable. Cutaneous examination revealed three subcutaneous nodules of 1 cm diameter firmly adherent to the underlying tissues, located on her right labium majorum (Figure 1). Regional lymph nodes were not enlarged. She underwent an excision biopsy of a subcuta-neous nodule under local anesthesia. The gross specimen was firm, white and fleshy in appearance. A skin biopsy was performed, and histological findings revealed a non-encapsulated dermal nodule composed of clusters of polygonal cells with small central nuclei and abundant eosinophilic cytoplasm (Figure 2a). The tumor cells formed sheets and nests irregularly infiltrating between collagen bundles. There was no significant cyto-logic atypia and mitotic features. There were no necrosis and hemorrhage. The cells were positive for S-100 immunostain (Figure 2b). Hence, the diagnosis of benign vulvar granular cell tumor was assessed. The patient underwent surgical excision of the subcutaneous nodules with no recurrence at 2 years.

Sporadic inclusion body myositis (sIBM) is a muscle disease in older people and is characterized by inflammatory cell invasion into intact muscle fibers and rimmed vacuoles. The pathomechanism of sIBM is not fully elucidated yet, and controversy exists as to whether sIBM is a primary autoimmune disease or a degenerative muscle disease with secondary inflammation. Previously, we established a method of collecting CD56-positive myoblasts from human skeletal muscle biopsy samples. We hypothesized that the myoblasts derived from these patients are useful to see the cell-autonomous pathomechanism of sIBM. With these resources, myoblasts were differentiated into myotubes, and the expression profiles of cell-autonomous pathology of sIBM were analyzed. Myoblasts from three sIBM cases and six controls were differentiated into myotubes. In the RNA-sequencing analysis of these "myotube" samples, 104 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were found to be significantly upregulated by more than twofold in sIBM, and 13 DEGs were downregulated by less than twofold. For muscle biopsy samples, a comparative analysis was conducted to determine the extent to which "biopsy" and "myotube" samples differed. Fifty-three DEGs were extracted of which 32 (60%) had opposite directions of expression change (e.g., increased in biopsy vs decreased in myotube). Apolipoprotein E (apoE) and transmembrane protein 8C (TMEM8C or MYMK) were commonly upregulated in muscle biopsies and myotubes from sIBM. ApoE and myogenin protein levels were upregulated in sIBM. Given that enrichment analysis also captured changes in muscle contraction and development, the triggering of muscle atrophy signaling and abnormal muscle differentiation via MYMK or myogenin may be involved in the pathogenesis of sIBM. The presence of DEGs in sIBM suggests that the myotubes formed from sIBM-derived myoblasts revealed the existence of muscle cell-autonomous degeneration in sIBM. The catalog of DEGs will be an important resource for future studies on the pathogenesis of sIBM focusing on primary muscle degeneration.

We aimed to investigate the clinical value of allograft biopsy performed long after renal transplantation. We retrospectively evaluated 99 allograft biopsies in recipients with transplantation vintages of 10 years or longer. Mixed-effects model showed that 1-year estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) slopes after biopsy were significantly greater than those before biopsy [-3.13, -4.42 mL/min/1.73 m2/year, p = 0.01]. Renal biopsy changed the treatment strategies in more than half of the patients. Improvement in eGFR slopes was pronounced in 51 patients with treatment modification based on the biopsy results [2.27 (95% confidence interval (CI): 0.66, 3.89) mL/min/1.73 m2/year], whereas no improvement was observed in those without [0.33 (95% CI: -1.05, 1.71) mL/min/1.73 m2/year, Pinteraction = 0.001]. Among the treatment modifications, enhancement of immunosuppression (IS) led to the most remarkable improvement in eGFR slope. Patients with g scores ≥2 were more likely to receive IS enhancement than those with g scores = 0 [odds ratio; 15.0 (95% CI: 1.65, 136)]. Patients with active glomerulitis (g ≥ 1) without chronicity (cg ≤ 1) showed the most significant improvement in eGFR slope. Given the prevalence of active glomerulitis (g ≥ 1, 21%), which is responsive to treatment even long after transplantation, and the observed magnitude of eGFR slope improvement, renal biopsy can indeed improve allograft prognosis.

RESUMO

The population with metabolic dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD) is increasingly common worldwide. Identification of people at risk of progression to advanced stages is necessary to timely offer interventions and appropriate care. Liver biopsy is currently considered the gold standard for the diagnosis and staging of MAFLD, but it has associated risks and limitations. This has spurred the exploration of non-invasive diagnostics for MAFLD, especially for steatohepatitis and fibrosis. These non-invasive approaches mostly include biomarkers and algorithms derived from anthropometric measurements, serum tests, imaging or stool metagenome profiling. However, they still need rigorous and widespread clinical validation for the diagnostic performance.

Studies have highlighted a potential link between malignancies and immunoglobulin A nephropathy (IgAN). In such studies, the treatment of malignancy improved the symptoms of IgAN. Here, we report a patient case involving a history of hypertension, tobacco use disorder, and chronic kidney disease (CKD) presenting with hematuria with acute renal failure secondary to IgAN per renal biopsy. Prompted by this association, a malignancy workup was performed including computed tomography (CT) body imaging and biopsies of mediastinal and cervical lymph nodes which revealed a metastatic adenocarcinoma. Current knowledge includes a general mechanism behind the development of IgAN that points toward glomerular deposition of tumor-specific immunoglobulin A (IgA) immunoglobulins. However, the association of IgAN and malignancy has no definitive management guidelines. This clinical case serves as an important contribution in the hopes of future development of guidelines regarding the surveillance and management of IgAN in the setting of malignancy.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study is to investigate the accuracy of utilizing neural fiber trunk diameter in accurately diagnosing the length of the aganglionic segment in patients definitively diagnosed with Hirschsprung's disease. RESULTS: In this study, 40 patients (19 males, 21 females; mean age 2.5 ± 2.2646 years) were assessed for Hirschsprung's disease. Constipation was the main symptom (75%), followed by abdominal issues. All underwent contrast enema and rectal suction biopsy for diagnosis, followed by surgery (predominantly Soave and Swensen techniques). Majority (85%) had rectosigmoid involvement. Neural fiber diameter was measured, with 52.5% ≤40 µm and 47.5% >40 µm. Statistical analysis showed 40% sensitivity(CI:95%) and 47% specificity(CI:95%) with a cutoff of 40.5 µm. Cohen's kappa index for aganglionic segment size was 0.7.

INTRODUCTION: Primary pulmonary angiosarcoma (PPA) is a highly aggressive and rare malignancy originating from the endothelial cells of blood vessels in the lungs. PPA is an extremely rare subtype, with less than 30 cases reported to date. PPA is not only challenging to diagnose but also has a poor prognosis, often resulting in a high mortality rate within a year of diagnosis, regardless of the treatment approach. METHOD: We present the case of a 33-year-old woman with no significant past medical history who presented with abdominal pain and was incidentally found to have a right hilar mass with pleural effusion and empyema. After undergoing surgery for a perforated gastric ulcer, her pulmonary lesions were further worked up. Despite an extensive diagnostic evaluation, including imaging, bronchoscopy, and thoracotomy, establishing a diagnosis was challenging. Ultimately, PPA was diagnosed on surgical lung biopsy, and the patient was started on pazopanib and paclitaxel chemotherapy but expired after 1 month due to multiple complications. CONCLUSION: This case highlights the difficulty in diagnosing this rare tumor and its poor prognosis regardless of therapy. Greater awareness of PPA and more research are needed to improve early detection and treatment options for this deadly disease.

RESUMO

Mantle cell lymphoma of the ocular and periorbital regions is extremely rare but should be considered in the differential diagnosis of lesions affecting the periorbital tissues. In this study, we present a rare case of mantle cell lymphoma of the lacrimal sac in a 65-year-old male presenting with a mass in the lacrimal sac region and epiphora. After clinical examinations and imaging studies, the mucocele was misdiagnosed. Considering the unexpected findings during external dacryocystorhinostomy, a frozen biopsy was performed, which confirmed the diagnosis of lymphoma.

The objective of the present study was to investigate the frequency of oral leukoplakia and oral erythroplakia among young patients from three Brazilian reference centers in Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology. A retrospective study was carried out from 2011 to 2021 on 861 patients diagnosed with oral leukoplakia and oral erythroplakia. Demographic and clinicopathological data were evaluated. Fisher's exact test was used to evaluate the association among sex, age, anatomical location, and histopathological diagnosis. A total of 83 (9.64%) cases involved young patients (aged <40 years). Among these, biopsy records were included in 31 (37.34%) cases, all of which received a clinical diagnosis of oral leukoplakia. Seventeen (54.84%) patients were female, mostly in their fourth decade of life (n = 22/70.97%), and their mean age at diagnosis was 32.61(± 5.21) years. Among informed cases, seven (22.58%) patients were smokers. The lateral border of the tongue (n = 9/29.03%) was the most affected site. In 13 (41.94%) cases, oral leukoplakias showed a homogeneous appearance. The mean size of the lesions was 1.47 cm (0.2-3.0 cm) and the mean time of disease progression was 64.37 (± 65.90) months. The histopathological analysis showed that 11 cases (35.48%) exhibited some degree of epithelial dysplasia. Acanthosis and/or hyperkeratosis were observed in 20 cases (64.52%). No significant associations were observed between sex and anatomical location, age and anatomical location, nor between sex and histological diagnosis (p > 0.05). Oral leukoplakia and oral erythroplakia are uncommon diseases in young patients. In this population, oral leukoplakia shows a slight predilection for women aged between 30 and 39 years.

Objective: To investigate the clinicopathological features of renal leukocyte chemokine type 2 amyloidosis (ALECT2). Methods: The prevalence, clinical characteristics, renal histopathological features, and renal outcome of 15 patients with ALECT2 by kidney biopsy were collected in the Department of Kidney Pathology, Shanxi Medical University Second Hospital, Taiyuan, China from January 1993 to December 2023. Immunohistochemistry and mass spectrometry for amyloid proteins were carried out. Results: Fifteen patients with ALECT2 were included in the study, representing 12.93% (15/116) of the renal biopsy-proven amyloidosis cases. There were 5 males and 10 females. The median age at diagnosis was 61 years. All patients had various degrees of proteinuria; 7 patients had nephrotic syndrome; 3 patients had renal insufficiency; 7 patients had microscopic hematuria. Renal biopsy showed that strongly orangophilic amyloid proteins distributed mainly in the renal cortical interstitium, vascular walls, the glomerular mesangium and/or glomerular basement membrane. Eight cases were diagnosed with ALECT2 alone and 7 cases combined with other renal diseases, including 4 cases with membranous nephropathy, 2 cases with IgA nephropathy, and 1 case with subacute tubular interstitial nephropathy. ALECT2 patients with concurrent renal disease showed a higher proteinuria level than those without (3.48 g/24 h versus 4.58 g/24 h). All patients were corroborated by immunohistochemistry to exhibit the specific location of LECT2 in the amyloid fibrils. Mass spectrometry analysis revealed LECT2 polypeptide in 9 patients. Except two patients with worsening renal function, the others showed stable renal function during the mean follow-up period of 12.5 months. Conclusions: ALECT2 is the second common type of renal amyloidosis in our center. The majority of ALECT2 patients show concurrent renal diseases, with a high rate of membranous nephropathy. Amyloid deposits distribute mainly in the cortical interstitium of the kidney, the glomerular mesangium and vascular walls. Mass spectrometry is the most sensitive and specific method for detecting LECT2 amyloidosis.

Prostate-Specific Antigen (PSA) based screening of prostate cancer (PCa) needs refinement. The aim of this study was the identification of urinary biomarkers to predict the Prostate Imaging-Reporting and Data System (PI-RADS) score and the presence of PCa prior to prostate biopsy. Urine samples from patients with elevated PSA were collected prior to prostate biopsy (cohort = 99). The re-analysis of mass spectrometry data from 45 samples was performed to identify urinary biomarkers to predict the PI-RADS score and the presence of PCa. The most promising candidates, i.e. SPARC-like protein 1 (SPARCL1), Lymphatic vessel endothelial hyaluronan receptor 1 (LYVE1), Alpha-1-microglobulin/bikunin precursor (AMBP), keratin 13 (KRT13), cluster of differentiation 99 (CD99) and hornerin (HRNR), were quantified by ELISA and validated in an independent cohort of 54 samples. Various biomarker combinations showed the ability to predict the PI-RADS score (AUC = 0.79). In combination with the PI-RADS score, the biomarkers improve the detection of prostate carcinoma-free men (AUC = 0.89) and of those with clinically significant PCa (AUC = 0.93). We have uncovered the potential of urinary biomarkers for a test that allows a more stringent prioritization of mpMRI use and improves the decision criteria for prostate biopsy, minimizing patient burden by decreasing the number of unnecessary prostate biopsies.

Background: The proximity of activated T cells and mast cells in the lesional skin of patients with chronic spontaneous urticaria (CSU) is held to contribute to the development of wheals and angioedema. In a previous study, we demonstrated that increased IL-17 expression in T cells and mast cells in skin lesions of patients with CSU is associated with T/mast cell proximity, but the mechanisms that drive T cell/mast cell co-localization remain unknown. Objectives: To assess if chemokines expressed in lesional CSU skin contribute to T cell/mast cell proximity. Patients and methods: Biopsies from lesional CSU skin were compared to biopsies from healthy skin for expression of CCR5 and its ligand CCL3 by CD4+ T cells and mast cells, respectively. Results: Numbers of CCR5-positive CD4+ T cells in lesional CSU skin were significantly increased as compared to healthy normal skin (p < 0.0001). The number of mast cells expressing CCL3 (ligand for CCR5) in CSU skin was also increased (p < 0.0002) and significant association with T-cell close proximity (p < 0.0001) is noticed. Conclusions: The close proximity of T cells and mast cells in the skin of severe CSU may be driven, at least in part by increased CCR5 and CCL3 expression. Therapies that target CCL3 interaction with CCR5 should be assessed for their effects in CSU.

AIM: To evaluate the clinical and pathological features and prognosis of idiopathic membranous nephropathy (IMN) with focal segmental sclerosis (FSGS) in a group of Russian patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS: 101 patients with morphologically verified IMN were enrolled in our single-center cohort retrospective study. The patients were divided into IMN group and IMN+FSGS group. The primary and secondary outcomes were analyzed in 59 patients, which had follow-up data for period more than 6 months. RESULTS: At the time of renal biopsy the median age was 46.0 (33.0; 55.0) years and the median follow-up was 6.8 (4.0; 15.6) months. Secondary FSGS was revealed in 15 (14.9%) patients with IMN. The IMN and IMN+FSGS groups did not differ in gender, age of onset IMN and age of renal biopsy. In the IMN+FSGS group proteinuria was higher and estimated glomerular filtration rate was lower than that in the IMN group (p<0.05). The systolic arterial pressure and creatinine levels in the IMN+FSGS group were slightly higher than in the IMN group, but the difference was not significant. Anti-PLA2R positivity was similar in both groups. Chronic kidney disease (CKD) progression was observed in 10/52 (19.2%) and 5/7 (71.4%) patients in IMN and IMN+FSGS groups, respectively. In a multivariate Cox regression model, age of renal biopsy (odds ratio - OR 1.12, 95% confidence interval - CI 1.03-1.22; р=0.07), FSGS (OR 0.05, 95% CI 0.01-0.34; р=0.002) и response to initial course of immunosuppression (OR 0.33, 95% CI 0.12-0.95; р=0.039) were associated with the CKD progression. CONCLUSION: In patients with IMN secondary FSGS is associated with a greater severity of proteinuria and a decrease in estimated glomerular filtration rate, and is also an independent factor of the CKD progression.

Labial salivary gland biopsy (LSGB) is one of the specific diagnostic criteria for primary Sjögren's syndrome (pSS). In traditional LSGB, there is no lower lip fixation device, the field of view is unclear due to intraoperative bleeding, and the incision is large, which is unfavourable for healing. The use of auxiliary devices to improve the shortcomings of traditional LSGB technique would be meaningful. Therefore, this case-control study aimed to assess the value of modified LSGB using chalazion forceps as compared with traditional LSGB. After obtaining written informed consent from all participating parents and patients, we randomly assigned 217 eligible participants to undergo LSGB using chalazion forceps (n = 125) or traditional LSGB (n = 92). The outcome variables were surgical time, incision length, intraoperative bleeding, pain score at 24 h after surgery, incision healing status at 7 days after surgery, gland collection, and pathological results. The final diagnostic results of the two surgical methods were compared, and the match rates between the pathological results and the final clinical diagnoses were compared between the two groups. The data were analysed using parametric and nonparametric tests. Compared with the traditional group, the modified group had a smaller incision, shorter operative time, less blood loss, lower 24 h pain score, and better Grade A incision healing at 7 days after surgery (p < 0.01). There was no statistically significant difference between the patients in the two surgical-method groups in terms of the positive biopsy results and the final diagnosis based on expert opinions (p > 0.05). By multivariable regression analysis, only a focus score (FS) of ≥ 1 (p < 0.01), dry eye disease (p < 0.05) and anti-nuclear antibodies (ANA) titre ≥ 1:320 (p < 0.05) were correlated with the diagnosis of pSS. The positive biopsy results of patients in the different surgical-method groups had a biopsy accuracy of > 80.0% for the diagnosis of pSS. The positive biopsy results in the different surgical-method groups were consistent with the expert opinions and the 2016 ACR-EULAR primary SS classification criteria. The modified LSGB using an auxiliary chalazion forceps offers a good safety with a small incision, shorter operative time, less bleeding, reduced pain and a low incidence of postoperative complications.The match rate of LSGB pathological results of the proposed surgical procedure with the final diagnosis of pSS is high.

The significance of glomerular IgM deposit intensity in IgA Nephropathy (IgAN) remained ambiguous and requires further research. Patients with biopsy-proven IgAN in our hospital from January 2018 to May 2023 were recruited into this retrospective single-center study. Patients who presented with positive IgM deposit were included in IgM + cohort while patients with negative IgM deposit were included in IgM- cohort. Of the IgM+, patients whose IF intensity of IgM deposits exceeded 1+ formed IgM-H cohort while patients whose IF intensity of IgM deposits was equal to 1+ consisted IgM-L cohort. Pairwise comparisons were performed among these cohorts to determine clinical disparities, following the propensity score matching process. Among 982 IgAN patients, 539 patients presented with positive IgM deposit. The Kaplan-Meier analysis showed that the IgM deposit did not contribute adversely to the outcomes (eGFR decreased from the baseline ≥ 50% continuously or reached end-stage renal disease). However, the Cox regression analysis showed that increased intensity of IgM deposit was an independent risk factor (p = 0.03) in IgM+. The IgM-H exhibited more pronounced segmental glomerulosclerosis (p = 0.02) than the IgM-L, which may also be associated more directly with higher urine protein levels (p = 0.02). Moreover, our generalized linear mixed model demonstrated a remarkably higher urine albumin/creatinine ratio (p < 0.01) and serum creatinine (p = 0.04) levels as well as lower serum albumin (p < 0.01) level in IgM-H persistently during the 5-year follow-up. This study concluded that increased intensity of glomerular IgM deposits may contribute adversely to clinicopathologic presentation and outcome in those IgM + patients.

RESUMO

Primary cardiac angiosarcoma is a rare, aggressive malignancy that commonly metastasizes to various organs. The presenting symptoms are typically nonspecific, so a comprehensive examination is required to confirm the diagnosis promptly. This case report describes the presentation of an older patient with a history of neoplasms. Echocardiography and biopsy were performed, but despite surgical intervention to resect a large right atrial mass, the patient died. A final diagnosis of primary angiosarcoma was made based on the resected specimen.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Most skin cancers diagnosed in Australia, including melanomas, are identified and managed in a primary care setting. Most skin cancers have the diagnosis confirmed by histopathology, and surgical excision is the most common form of treatment. Therefore, it is important that all primary care doctors in Australia are competent and confident in the diagnostic sampling and surgical management of skin cancers. OBJECTIVE: This article considers the process of performing biopsies and excisions from the skin to diagnose or treat skin cancers. DISCUSSION: Primary care is the appropriate setting for the management of most skin cancers in Australia. Small simple lesions can be sampled for diagnosis and excised as definitive treatment of the tumour. This can be simpler, cheaper and more efficient for the patient compared to the hospital setting, allows the resources of speciality care to be used for more difficult scenarios and be quite a satisfying part of providing primary care.

Prostaglandins have many roles in the equine reproductive tract, including but not limited to luteolysis, luteal support, ovulation, transport through the uterine tube, uterine contraction, embryonic mobility, inflammation, and fibrosis. Altered secretion of inflammatory proteins are likely to disrupt the balance of endometrial function and could impair fertility. Our overall goal was to measure the expression of several prostaglandin- and inflammation-related genes in mares with different degrees of endometrial histological changes. Our hypothesis was that mares with neutrophilic and lymphocytic plasmocytic inflammation, fibrosis, or different biopsy grades would have altered concentrations of prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) and F2α (PGF2α), as well as altered expression of inflammation- and prostaglandin-related genes, compared to mares with minimal to no histological changes on biopsy evaluation. Forty-five endometrial biopsies from estrous mares were assessed by a reproductive pathologist for the degree of neutrophilic inflammation, lymphocytic and plasmocytic inflammation, and fibrosis, and a biopsy grade was assigned based on the Kenney-Doig system. A low-volume uterine lavage was collected from a subset of twenty-six mares prior to biopsy collection and was used to measure PGE2 and PGF2α concentrations via ELISA. Total RNA was extracted from biopsies and mRNA expression was evaluated for twenty-five genes of interest. A restricted maximum likelihood linear model was used to compare differences of mRNA expression, with a statistical significance set at P < 0.05. There was no difference in the abundance of PGE2 or PGF2α between any of the variables tested. Mares with endometrial biopsy grade I had lower expression of NF-kB, PTGS1 and HPGD compared to grade IIA or IIB (P < 0.05). Mares with neutrophilic inflammation had decreased expression of NF-kB, PTGS1, PTGER4, CBR1, mPGES2 and PTGIS compared to mares without inflammation. Mares with mild or minimal endometrial fibrosis had increased expression of mPGES2 and PTGIS, compared to mares with moderate endometrial fibrosis. In conclusion, several genes were identified to be differentially expressed in mares with histological changes compared to mares with no to minimal histological changes. The presence of inflammation and fibrosis may alter the concentration of prostaglandins in endometrial tissue, which could impair many of the uterine reproductive and immune functions during estrus, affecting early embryo survival.

BACKGROUND: Patients with skeletal angle Class III malocclusion usually have inadequate hard and soft tissue volume at the mandibular anterior teeth. The labial proclination at the teeth may lead to gingival recession. The purpose of this study was to explore whether periodontal phenotype modification therapy with soft tissue augmentation (PhMT-s) can prevent gingival recession in these patients. METHODS: Four patients with skeletal Class III malocclusion and a thin periodontal phenotype underwent surgical-orthodontic treatment. Prior to tooth movement, they underwent a minimally invasive vestibular incision with subperiosteal tunnel access combined with autogenous connective tissue grafts for periodontal phenotype modification with soft tissue augmentation (PhMT-s). The labial gingival thickness of the anterior mandibular teeth was measured at three distinct levels: at the cementoenamel junction (GT0), 3 mm apical to the CEJ (GT3), and 6 mm apical to the CEJ (GT6). These measurements were taken at baseline, three months following PhMT-s, and after tooth decompensation. Additionally, a biopsy sample was obtained from the PhMT-s site of one patient. All sections were subsequently stained using hematoxylin and eosin, Masson trichrome, Sirius Red, and immunohistochemistry. RESULTS: The thickness of the labial gingiva was increased about 0.42 to 2.00 mm after PhMT-s. At the end of pre-orthognathic surgical orthodontic treatment, the thickness of the labial gingiva was increased about - 0.14 to 1.32 mm compared to the baseline and no gingival recession occurred after the pre-orthognathic surgical orthodontic treatment. The histologic results demonstrated that the grafts obtained from the PhMT-s site exhibited increased deposition of collagen fibers. Moreover, the proportion of type III collagen increased and the grafts displayed significantly reduced positive expression of CD31 and OCN. CONCLUSIONS: PhMT-s increased the thickness of the soft tissue, stabilizing the gingival margin for teeth exhibiting a thin periodontal phenotype and undergoing labial movement. This is attributed to the increased deposition of collagen fibers.
