RESUMO

The ventral horn of the rat spinal cord was investigated with respect to the somatotopic organization of the motor neurons that innervate the lumbar muscles. Neurotracer 1,1'-dioctadecyl-3,3,3',3'-tetramethylindocarbocyanine perchlorate (DiI) was applied to specific sites in lumbar muscles. Spinal cord segments at L1 through L4 levels were cut into 40-mum serial transverse sections. Labeled neurons were located in the ventromedial nucleus (VM) and lateromedial nucleus (LM) nuclei of Rexed's lamina IX. Motor neurons innervating the m. interspinales lumborum and m. multifidus were without exception present in the VM, whereas all motor neurons innervating the m. rectus abdominis were present in the LM. Forty percent of motor neurons innervating the m. quadratus lumborum were present in the VM and the other 60% were in the LM. Although most of the motor neurons innervating the m. psoas major were present in the LM, a few labeled neurons existed in the VM. These results suggest that the border zone demarcating the areas of innervation of the dorsal and ventral rami of spinal nerves crosses the m. quadratus lumborum.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To trace the segmental distribution of somatic sensory neurons of the skin and dorsal nerve in the rabbits penis. METHODS: The experiment was performed on 8 adult male rabbits with the nerve tracing method of retrograde axonal transport of horseradish peroxidase (HRP), which was injected into the dermis around the penis and the dorsal nerve of the penis. The rabbits were sacrificed five days later to harvest the spinal cord segments and the dorsal root ganglia of lumbosacral segments for histological study. RESULTS: The HRP tracing showed that a number of labeled HRP positive neurons appeared in spinal ganglia (S2 - S4) in all the rabbits, and distributed segmentally. The counts of the positive neurons different segments were: S2 (215.0 +/- 10.2) , S3 (242.2 +/- 8.3) and S4 (109.7 +/- 8.4) respectively, with statistically significant difference between the two groups. CONCLUSION: The rabbit's sensory nerve fibers in both the skin and the dorsal nerve of the penis are rooted in the S2-S4 segments of spinal ganglia, which distribute regularly.

RESUMO

In the cervical and lumbosacral enlargements of the chicken, there are seven spinocerebellar nuclei, the Clarke's column, the spinal border cells, the ventral margin of the ventral horn of both enlargements, and the ventral marginal nucleus in the lumbosacral enlargement. In the present study, we investigated the laterality of spinocerebellar tract axons and the distribution of the spinocerebellar tract neurons projecting into the anterior or posterior part of the cerebellum in these seven nuclei by retrograde transport of wheat germ agglutinin-horseradish peroxidase. The spinocerebellar tract neurons with uncrossed axons were found in the cervical Clarke's column and the cervical spinal border cells, and with crossed ones in the lumbar Clarke's column, lumbar spinal border cells, lumbar lamina IX included in the ventral margin of the ventral horn of the lumbosacral enlargement, and the ventral marginal nucleus. The ventral margin of the ventral horn of the cervical enlargement and lumbar lamina VIII included in the ventral margin of the ventral horn of the lumbosacral enlargement issued spinocerebellar tract axons bilaterally. The spinocerebellar tract neurons of the lumbar spinal border cells and lumbar lamina IX projected to the anterior part of the cerebellum only. And those of the other nuclei projected to both the anterior and posterior parts.
