A considerable attention has been focused on the possible association between ultra-trace elements (UTEs) status and pathogenesis of many diseases including rheumatoid arthritis (RA). UTEs have important roles in numerous metabolic processes. Serum Cs, Rb, and Re levels in RA are not studied previously. The correlation of serum Cs, Rb, and Re levels with the well-known serological parameters, anticyclic citrullinated protein antibody (ACPA), C-reactive protein (CRP), ESR, and rheumatoid factor (RF) is also not studied previously. The present study aimed to measure the level and the correlation between serum UTEs with various blood tests results in RA patients. Serum Cs, Rb, Re, ACPA, CRP, RF, and ESR were measured in Iraqi RA patients who have a positive ACPA (ACPA > 25 U/ml) and compared with healthy individuals. There were significant elevations (p < 0.05) in serum levels of all the measured parameters as compared with those of the healthy control group except Rb and uric acid which have not been changed. Subgrouping of patients according to the results of CRP and RF leads to different results. In the low-CRP group, the high-RF subgroup showed an elevation of ACPA, Cs, and ESR in comparison with the low-RF patients. In the high-CRP group, the patients with high RF showed an increase in the levels of Cs, Rb, ESR, and ACPA. The patient group with high RF and high CRP showed more significant correlations between serum UTEs and serological tests. Serum levels of UTEs were significantly altered in RA patients. The variations in the serum levels of the measured parameters in RA need more investigation to explore the possible association between these UTEs and RA. RA subgroups, according to the results of CRP and CPA, produce more and various information than taking RA as a whole group in the estimation of UTEs.

BACKGROUND: Many substances poured out from industries can be toxic to humans and can impair physical performance. Besides, physical training may modify the body concentrations of these substances as a result of physiological adaptations. OBJECTIVES: The aim of the study was to determine if different modalities of exercise might affect serum concentrations of toxic trace elements in sportsmen. METHODS: 80 Spanish national sportsmen were recruited before the start of their training period. All the athletes had been training regularly for the previous two years with a rigorous training target at high-level competition. 31 sedentary participants from the same geographic area formed the control group. Serum arsenic, beryllium, cadmium, cesium and lead samples were analyzed with an ICP-MS. RESULTS: Serum concentrations were higher among the sportsmen group than among the control group, being highly significant in cases of Be from 0.043±0.019 to 0.074±0.029µg/L, Cs from 0.693±0.305 to 1.358±0.569µg/L and Pb from 0.162±0.171 to 2.375±1.699µg/L; and significant in the case of Cd from 0.046±0.027 to 0.067±0.059µg/L. However, if they were separated according to different sport modalities, it was found that, although they had higher concentrations than controls, there were elements that changed their concentrations in relation to the metabolic type of activity performed. CONCLUSIONS: In some cases physical exercise induces favorable adaptations to avoid environmental pollution damage. Endurance training (65-75% VO2max) can be considered the most effective exercise to prevent toxicity effects. However, integral-matrixes analysis are required in further research to overcome some controversial behaviors of some elements.

(133)Cs nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy was conducted on (133)Cs(+) in gelatin hydrogels that were either relaxed or stretched. Stretching generated a septet from this spin-7/2 nucleus, and its nuclear magnetic relaxation was studied via z-spectra, and two-dimensional nuclear Overhauser (NOESY) spectroscopy. Various spectral features were well simulated by using Mathematica and the software package SpinDynamica. Spectra of CsCl in suspensions of human erythrocytes embedded in gelatin gel showed separation of the resonances from the cation inside and outside the cells. Upon stretching the sample, the extracellular (133)Cs(+) signal split into a septet, while the intracellular peak was unchanged, revealing different alignment/ordering properties of the environment inside and around the cells. Differential interference contrast light microscopy confirmed that the cells were stretched when the overall sample was elongated. Analysis of the various spectral features of (133)Cs(+) reported here opens up applications of this K(+) congener for studies of cation-handling by metabolically-active cells and tissues in aligned states.

Little is known about the trace element profile differences between Schizophrenia patients and healthy controls; previous studies about the association of certain elements with Schizophrenia have obtained conflicting results. To identify these differences in the Han Chinese population, inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry was used to quantify the levels of 35 elements in the sera of 111 Schizophrenia patients and 110 healthy participants, which consisted of a training (61/61 for cases/controls included) and a test group including remaining participants. An orthogonal projection to latent structures model was constructed from the training group (R(2)Y = 0.465, Q(2)cum = 0.343) had a sensitivity of 76.0% and a specificity of 71.4% in the test group. Single element analysis indicated that the concentrations of cesium, zinc, and selenium were significantly reduced in patients with Schizophrenia in both the training and test groups. The meta-analysis including 522 cases and 360 controls supported that Zinc was significantly associated with Schizophrenia (standardized mean difference [SMD], -0.81; 95% confidence intervals [CI], -1.46 to -0.16, P = 0.01) in the random-effect model. Information theory analysis indicated that Zinc could play roles independently in Schizophrenia. These results suggest clear element profile differences between patients with Schizophrenia and healthy controls, and reduced Zn level is confirmed in the Schizophrenia patients.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the distribution of rubidium (Rb), cesium (Cs), beryllium (Be), strontium (Sr), and barium (Ba) in blood and urine in general Chinese population. METHODS: A total of 18 120 subjects aged 6~60 years were enrolled from 24 regions in 8 provinces in Eastern, Central, and Western China from 2009 to 2010 based on the method of cluster random sampling. Questionnaire survey was conducted to collect the data on living environment and health status. Blood and urine samples were collected from these subjects, and the levels of Rb, Cs, Be, Sr, and Ba in these samples were determined by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. The distribution of these elements in blood and urine in male or female subjects living in different regions was analyzed statistically. RESULTS: In the general Chinese population, the concentration of Be in the whole blood was below the detection limit (0.06 µg/L); the geometric mean (GM) of Ba in the whole blood was below the detection limit (0.45 µg/L), with the 95th percentile (P95)of 1.37 µg/L; the GMs (95% CI)of Rb, Cs, and Sr in the whole blood were 2 374(2 357~2 392) µg/L, 2.01 (1.98~2.05) µg/L, and 23.5 (23.3~23.7) µg/L, respectively; in males and females, the GMs (95%CI)of blood Rb, Cs, and Sr were 2 506 (2 478~2 533) µg/L and 2 248 (2 227~2 270) µg/L, 1.88 (1.83~1.94) µg/L and 2.16 (2.11~2.20) µg/L, and 23.4 (23.1~23.7) µg/L and 23.6 (23.3~23.9) µg/L, respectively(P<0.01, P>0.05, and P>0.05). In the general Chinese population, the GM of urine Be was below the detection limit (0.06 µg/L), while the GMs (95%CI)of urine Rb, Cs, Sr, and Ba were 854 (836~873) µg/L, 3.65 (3.56~3.74) µg/L, 39.5 (38.4~40.6) µg/L, and 1.10 (1.07~1.12) µg/L, respectively; in males and females, the GMs (95%CI)of urine Rb, Cs, Sr, and Ba were 876 (849~904) µg/L and 832 (807~858) µg/L, 3.83 (3.70~3.96) µg/L and 3.47 (3.35~3.60) µg/L, 42.5 (40.9~44.2) µg/L and 36.6 (35.1~38.0) µg/L, and 1.15 (1.12~1.19) µg/L and 1.04 (1.01~1.07) µg/L, respectively (all P< 0.01). Correlation analyses showed that there were weak correlations between blood Rb and urine Rb (r=0.197)and between blood Sr and urine Sr (r=0.180), but a good correlation between blood Cs and urine Cs (r=0.487). CONCLUSION: The levels of Rb, Cs, Be, Sr, and Ba in the general Chinese population are similar to those reported in other countries, and there is a significant difference in the concentration of each element among the populations living in different regions, as well as significant differences in blood Rb, urine Rb, urine Cs, urine Sr, and urine Ba between males and females.

The present study describes the development of an analytical method for the determination of cesium in biological fluid samples (human urine and blood samples) by laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS). The developed method is based on sample presentation by liquid-to-solid conversion, enhancing the emission signal by drying the liquid into small "pockets" created in a metal support (zinc plate), and allows the analysis to be carried out on as little as 1 µL of sample volume, in a closed sample cell. Absolute detection limits on the Cs I 852.1 nm spectral line were calculated by the IUPAC 3σ method to be 6 ng in the urine sample and 27 ng in the blood serum sample. It is estimated that LIBS may be used to detect highly elevated concentration levels of Cs in fluid samples taken from people potentially exposed to surges of Cs from non-natural sources.

Wolves, lynx and wolverines are on the top of the food-chain in northern Scandinavia and Finland. (210)Po and (137)Cs have been analysed in samples of liver, kidney and muscle from 28 wolves from Sweden. In addition blood samples were taken from 27 wolves. In 9 of the wolves, samples of muscle, liver and blood were analysed for (210)Po. Samples of liver and muscle were collected from 16 lynx and 16 wolverines from Norway. The liver samples were analysed for (210)Po and (137)Cs. Only (137)Cs analyses were carried out for the muscle samples. The wolves were collected during the winter 2010 and 2011, while the samples for lynx and wolverines were all from 2011. The activity concentrations of (210)Po in wolves were higher for liver (range 20-523 Bq kg(-1) d.w.) and kidney (range 24-942 Bq kg(-1) d.w.) than muscle (range 1-43 Bq kg(-1) d.w.) and blood (range 2-54 Bq kg(-1) d.w.). Activity ratios, (210)Po/(210)Pb, in wolf samples of muscle, liver and blood were in the ranges 2-77, 9-56 and 2-54. Using a wet weight ratio of 3.8 the maximal absorbed dose from (210)Po to wolf liver was estimated to 3500 µGy per year. Compared to wolf, the ranges of (210)Po in liver samples were lower in lynx (range 22-211 Bq kg(-1) d.w.) and wolverine (range16-160 Bq kg(-1) d.w.). Concentration of (137)Cs in wolf samples of muscle, liver, kidney and blood were in the ranges 70-8410 Bq kg(-1) d.w., 36-4050 Bq kg(-1) d.w., 31-3453 Bq kg(-1) d.w. and 4-959 Bq kg(-1) d.w., respectively. (137)Cs in lynx muscle and liver samples were in the ranges 44-13393 Bq kg(-1) d.w. and 125-10260 Bq kg(-1) d.w. The corresponding values for (137)Cs in wolverine were 22-3405 Bq kg(-1) d.w. for liver and 53-4780 Bq kg(-1) d.w. for muscle. The maximal absorbed dose from (137)Cs to lynx was estimated to 3000 µGy per year.

PURPOSE: To investigate the potential use of Prussian blue-coated magnetic nanoparticles, termed "Prussian blueberry", to bring about the magnetic elimination of cesium. METHODS: Prussian blueberry were prepared by a layer-by-layer assembly method. The morphology, structure and physical properties of the Prussian blueberry were investigated as was their ability to magnetically eliminate cesium. RESULTS: We confirmed that Prussian blueberry were composed of a magnetite nanoparticle-core and a Prussian blue-shell. Under a magnetic field, Prussian blueberry (5 mg) reduced the cesium concentration of seawater (3 ml) from 150 ppm to about 50 ppm; but regular Prussian blue could not magnetically eliminate cesium. Moreover, Prussian blueberry removed a similar proportion of cesium from a larger volume of seawater, and from fetal bovine serum and cow's milk. CONCLUSIONS: Under a magnetic field, Prussian blueberry was able to rapidly eliminate cesium from seawater and from biological matrices such as serum and milk.

Novel decorporation agents are being developed to protect against radiological terrorist attacks. These sorbents, known as the self-assembled monolayer on mesoporous supports (SAMMS), are hybrid materials where differing organic moieties are grafted onto mesoporous silica (SiO(2)). In vitro experiments focused on the evaluation and optimization of SAMMS for capturing radiocesium ((137)Cs); therefore, based on these studies, a ferrocyanide copper (FC-Cu-EDA)-SAMMS was advanced for in vivo evaluation. In vivo experiments were conducted comparing the performance of the SAMMS vs. insoluble Prussian blue. Groups of jugular cannulated rats (4/treatment) were evaluated. Animals in Group I were administered (137)Cs chloride (approximately 40 microg kg(-1)) by intravenous (i.v.) injection or oral gavage; Group II animals were administered pre-bound (137)Cs-SAMMS or sequential Cs chloride + SAMMS (approximately 61 ng kg(-1)) by oral gavage; and Group III was orally administered (137)Cs chloride (approximately 61 ng kg(-1)) followed by either 0.1 g of SAMMS or Prussian blue. Following dosing, the rats were maintained in metabolism cages for 72 h and blood, urine, and fecal samples were collected for (137)Cs analysis (gamma counting). Rats were then humanely euthanized, and selected tissues analyzed. Orally administered (137)Cs chloride was rapidly and well absorbed (approximately 100% relative to i.v. dose), and the pharmacokinetics (blood, urine, feces, and tissues) were very comparable to the i.v. dose group. For both exposures the urine and feces accounted for 20 and 3% of the dose, respectively. The prebound (137)Cs-SAMMS was retained primarily within the feces (72% of the dose), with approximately 1.4% detected in the urine, suggesting that the (137)Cs remained tightly bound to SAMMS. SAMMS and Prussian blue both effectively captured available (137)Cs in the gut with feces accounting for 80-88% of the administered dose, while less than 2% was detected in the urine. This study suggests that the functionalized SAMMS outperforms Prussian blue in vitro at low pH, but demonstrates comparable in vivo sequestration efficacy at low exposure concentrations. The comparable response may be the result of the low (137)Cs chloride dose and high sorbent dosage that was utilized. Future studies are planned to optimize the performance of SAMMS in vivo over a broader range of doses and conditions.

Accumulating evidence implicates a role for altered metal homeostasis in the pathogenesis of neurodegenerative disorders such as Alzheimer's disease (AD). However, few investigations have addressed this issue in dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB). The aim of the present study was to investigate metal concentrations in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and plasma from patients with DLB and other neurodegenerative disorders. To that end, CSF and plasma samples were collected from 29 patients with DLB, 174 patients with AD, 90 patients with AD with minor vascular components, and 51 healthy volunteers. Total concentrations of Mg, Ca, Mn, Fe, Cu, Zn, Rb, Sr, and Cs were determined using mass spectrometry. Patients with DLB had elevated Ca and Mg levels in CSF and Mg levels in plasma as compared to all other groups (p<0.001). Furthermore, a combination of CSF-Mg and CSF-Ca could distinguish DLB from AD with a sensitivity of 93% and a specificity of 85%. Cu levels in both CSF and plasma tended to be higher in DLB compared to the other groups, but these trends failed to reach significance after correction for multiple comparisons. Mn, Fe, Zn, Rb, and Sr concentration in CSF or plasma were similar in all groups. The observed elevations of CSF-Mg, CSF-Ca and CSF-Cu may contribute to or be associated with the neurodegenerative process in DLB. Furthermore, determination of CSF-Mg and CSF-Ca concentration may be a valuable tool in distinguishing DLB from AD.

AIMS: Like potassium (K+), caesium (Cs+) tends to concentrate intracellularly. The aim here was to determine how moderate exercise affects the uptake of Cs+ from blood plasma. METHODS: After an intravenous Cs+ dose of 5 micromol kg(-1), plasma Cs+ concentration was followed for 100 min in goats and for 60 min in horses. The latter were divided into two groups, one resting and the other trotting on a treadmill (inclination 3 degrees, speed 5 m s(-1)). RESULTS: The plasma Cs+ concentration follows a multiphase exponential decay curve, which initially could be approximated with a two-phase curve. The initially high rate constant (approximately 10 h(-1)) decreased to around 1 h(-1) in 40 min. Exercise more than doubled the rate of removal of Cs+ from plasma between 20 and 40 min after the start of exercise. After exercise, the rate returned to resting levels within 10 min. Plasma K+, on the contrary, declined for at least 20 min after exercise had ended. CONCLUSIONS: Moderate exercise significantly increases the rate of removal of Cs+ from the bloodstream. After exercise, the rate returns to the resting levels within 10 min. The increased rate of Cs+ removal during exercise is likely due to increased activity of Na+, K+-ATPase in working skeletal muscles.

The development of a sensitive assay for the quantitative analysis of carbohydrates from human plasma using LC/MS/MS is described in this paper. After sample preparation, carbohydrates were cationized by Cs(+) after their separation by normal phase liquid chromatography on an amino based column. Cesium is capable of forming a quasi-molecular ion [M + Cs](+) with neutral carbohydrate molecules in the positive ion mode of electrospray ionization mass spectrometry. The mass spectrometer was operated in multiple reaction monitoring mode, and transitions [M + 133] --> 133 were monitored (M, carbohydrate molecular weight). The new method is robust, highly sensitive, rapid, and does not require postcolumn addition or derivatization. It is useful in clinical research for measurement of carbohydrate molecules by isotope dilution assay.

A physiologically descriptive model of the biological behavior of cesium in the human body has been constructed around a detailed blood flow model. The rate of transfer from plasma into a tissue is determined by the blood perfusion rate and the tissue-specific extraction fraction of Cs during passage from arterial to venous plasma. Information on tissue-specific extraction of Cs is supplemented with information on the Cs analogues, K and Rb, and known patterns of discrimination between these metals by tissues. The rate of return from a tissue to plasma is estimated from the relative contents of Cs in plasma and the tissue at equilibrium as estimated from environmental studies. Transfers of Cs other than exchange between plasma and tissues (e.g. secretions into the gastrointestinal tract) are based on a combination of physiological considerations and empirical data on Cs or related elements. Model predictions are consistent with the sizable database on the time-dependent distribution and retention of radiocesium in the human body.

CONTEXT: Complementary alternative medicine therapies based on the use of cesium chloride preparations for the treatment of cancer and radiation poisoning, have generated therapeutic interest; but oral or intravenous administration of cesium chloride (CsCl) to cancer patients as an alternative mode of cancer therapy have not been approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA). OBJECTIVE: Cesium (Cs) levels from human tissue were measured to determine exposure to an alternative medical treatment. Cesium levels are reported from two patients who were administered cesium chloride in conjunction with aloe vera as part of an alternative cancer treatment. DESIGN: The samples were analyzed by graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry with Zeeman background correction. As a reference, Cs was also determined in brain, liver, kidney, and whole blood from control case materials retrieved from the National Tissue Repository of the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology. RESULTS: High levels of cesium were found in brain, liver, kidney, bile, gastric content, and whole blood collected at autopsy as compared to reference levels. The administration of cesium chloride resulted in blood levels a factor of 1100 higher than normal. The highest Cs concentrations were found in the liver (1029 microg/g, dry wt), followed by the kidney (815 microg/g, dry wt) and brain (219 microg/g, dry wt). CONCLUSION: The high accumulation in the liver suggests that hepatotoxicity from Cs might be an initial presenting symptom in Cs-poisoning cases. This is the first report describing two cases with high Cs levels in human tissues.

Forces that are able to transport Na+ and K+ into two compartments were investigated. A modified Nernst-Planck equation for coupled flows of electric current, water, and ions was integrated. The result shows that if alkali ions in the ion channel of the cell membrane are separated by their electric-current-induced inward flows against an electro-osmotic outward flow of water, the logarithms of the stationary cell/medium distributions of these ions should be proportional to the inverse of their diffusion mobilities. The relationship was tested in human erythrocytes. From inward and outward movements of tracer alkali ions, calculations were made to obtain their stationary distributions at infinite time. The cell/medium distributions determined in this way at 38 degrees C are Li+ = 0.59, 22Na+ = 0.044, 42K+ = 10.0, 86Rb+ = 11.9, and 137Cs+ = 3.07. The entry rates of ions into the cell at 0 degrees C are understood to represent their diffusion mobilities in the pump channel. The entry rates are Li+ = 1.44, 2Na+ = 1, 42K+ = 2.22, 86Rb+ = 2.39, and 137Cs+ = 1.72 relative to that of 22Na+. There is an expected negative correlation between the logarithms of the stationary cell/ medium distributions at 38 degrees C and the inverse of the entry rates into the cell at 0 degrees C for the five ions. It is suggested that the proposed physical forces cause the separation of alkali ions in the channel of Na,K-ATPase.

BACKGROUND: In the past, nephrologists have been troubled by electrolyte disturbances and consequently focused their attention on the importance of maintaining the concentrations of electrolytes within the normal range. However, information about the potential role of trace elements in chronic renal failure is scarce. METHODS: During hemodialysis sessions, the concentrations of the five alkali metal cations lithium (Li), sodium (Na), potassium (K), rubidium (Rb), and cesium (Cs) have been determined in plasma and dialysis fluids of chronic hemodialysis patients by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (Li, Rb, Cs) and by ion-sensitive electrodes (Na, K). Strict quality control schemes were applied to all analytical procedures to ensure accuracy and precision of the results. RESULTS: The plasma concentrations of the elements Li, Cs, Rb, and K distinctly decreased to 29, 50, 69, and 71%, respectively, of their initial values during hemodialysis. Simultaneously, the concentrations of these elements in dialysis fluids at the outlet of the dialyzer increased approximately 13-fold for Rb, 11-fold for Li, 3-fold for Cs, and 2-fold for K as compared with the inlet values. The concentrations of Na in plasma and dialysis fluids were almost identical and did not change during hemodialysis. CONCLUSIONS: Li, Rb, and Cs were depleted in hemodialysis patients, although the plasma concentrations of these trace elements still remained within the reference ranges for healthy adults. Consequently, further studies are needed to elucidate the clinical importance and long-term effects of these trace element imbalances - for example, CNS disturbances associated with diminished concentrations of Rb - in hemodialysis patients.

We investigated the interaction of the cesium ion (Cs(+)) with the anionic intracellular components of human red blood cells (RBCs); the components studied included 2,3-bisphosphoglycerate (BPG), ADP, ATP, inorganic phosphate (P(i)), carbonmonoxy hemoglobin (COHb), and RBC membranes. We used spin-lattice (T(1)) and spin-spin (T(2)) (133)Cs NMR relaxation measurements to probe Cs(+) binding, and we found that Cs(+) bound more strongly to binding sites in BPG and in RBC membranes than in any other intracellular component in RBCs at physiologic concentrations. By using James-Noggle plots, we obtained Cs(+) binding constants per binding site in BPG (66 +/- 8 M(-1)), ADP (19 +/- 1 M(-1)), ATP (25 +/- 3 M(-1)), and RBC membranes (55 +/- 2 M(-1)) from the observed T(1) values. We also studied the effect of Cs(+) on the oxygen (O(2)) affinity of purified Hb and of Hb in intact RBCs in the absence and in the presence of BPG. In the absence of BPG, the O(2) affinity of Hb decreased upon addition of Cs(+). However, in the presence of BPG, the O(2) affinity of Hb increased upon addition of Cs(+). The O(2) affinity of Cs(+)-loaded human RBCs was larger than that of Cs(+)-free cells at the same BPG level. (31)P NMR studies on the pH dependence of the interaction between BPG and Hb indicated that the presence of Cs(+) resulted in a smaller fraction of BPG available to bind to the cleft of deoxyHb. Our NMR and O(2) affinity data indicate that a strong binding site for Cs(+) in human RBCs is BPG. A partial mechanism for Cs(+) toxicity might arise from competition between Cs(+) and deoxyHb for BPG, thereby increasing oxygenation of Hb in RBCs, and thus decreasing the ability of RBCs to give up oxygen in tissues. The presence of Cs(+) at 12.5 mM in intact human RBCs containing BPG at normal concentrations did not, however, alter significantly the O(2) affinity of Hb, thus ruling out the possibility of Cs(+)-BPG interactions accounting for Cs(+) toxicity in this cell type.

The uptake of Cs+ ions into the erythrocytes of abstemious volunteers and of alcoholic patients was followed using 133Cs NMR. The uptake rates are approximately linear with a rate of 0.33 mM.h-1 at an extracellular Cs+ concentration of 10 mM. There is no discernible difference in the uptake rate between the two classes of subject despite earlier reports that Cs+ distribution is different and consequently that Cs+ transport might be anomalous in alcoholics. There is no evidence of saturation of the input rate and Cs(+)-loaded cells retain their Cs+ when incubated in a Cs(+)-free buffer, strongly suggesting that there is no transport mechanism for the removal of Cs+ from the erythrocyte. Experiments designed to ascertain which intracellular ion is being replaced by Cs+ indicate that it predominantly displaces K+.
