RESUMO

The main causes of difficult fetal extraction during cesarean section are deeply impacted fetal head and floating presentation of the fetus. Studies of management techniques for difficult fetal extraction during cesarean section and the maternal and neonatal results lack scientific evidence, as these predominantly come from case reports, small case series and expert opinions. The deeply impacted fetal head is usually associated with prolongation of the expulsion period and/or unsuccessful attempts at operative vaginal delivery. The main maternal complications associated with the management of the deeply impacted fetal head are lacerations in the lower uterine segment, hematomas in the uterine ligaments and injuries to the uterine vessels, cervix and/or urinary tract. The main neonatal complications associated with the management of a deeply impacted fetal head are intracranial hemorrhage, fractures of the skull and/or cervical spine, nerve injuries, perinatal asphyxia and even death. Among the maneuvers for delivery of the deeply impacted fetal head, the abdominovaginal delivery (push method) seems to be the most associated with maternal and neonatal complications. In the non-insinuated and floating fetal head, the internal podalic version followed by pelvic extraction differs from the reverse breech extraction (pull method). When the fetal head is high in the pelvis, the fetus is internally ejected before the extraction of its body segments, similar to the internal version performed in the vaginal delivery of the second twin with floating presentation of the fetus.

Introducción. El perímetro cefálico (PC) es un indicador del crecimiento cerebral y es necesario contar con referencias de crecimiento que permitan determinar variaciones normales o patológicas. Objetivos. Presentar las primeras referencias argentinas de perímetro cefálico entre el nacimiento y los 19 años, y compararlas con las referencias de Nellhaus, utilizadas en nuestro país hasta la actualidad. Población y métodos. Para la construcción de estas referencias, se combinaron datos de la Encuesta Nacional de Nutrición y Salud 2018 y estudios transversales realizados entre 2004 y 2007 en las provincias de Buenos Aires y La Pampa, que incluyeron 8326 niños, niñas y adolescentes sanos. Las curvas de crecimiento fueron ajustadas con el método LMS. Para evaluar la magnitud de las diferencias entre estas referencias y las de Nellhaus, a diferentes edades, se graficaron los centilos 2, 50 y 98. Resultados. El PC mostró un incremento de tamaño variable con la edad, de mayor magnitud en los primeros años de vida, y un ligero incremento en la pubertad. Los valores del centilo 98 de las referencias argentinas fueron mayores que los de Nellhaus en todas las edades. Los valores del centilo 2 de la referencia nacional fueron menores que los de Nellhaus durante los primeros 2 años de vida, similares entre los 3 y 7 años, y mayores a partir de esta edad. Conclusiones. Las curvas argentinas describen adecuadamente el patrón de crecimiento del PC. Las diferencias halladas con la referencia de Nellhaus pueden atribuirse a cambios seculares.

Introducción. Las lesiones musculoesqueléticas traen consecuencias en los profesionales quirúrgicos, y más aún en cirujanos de cabeza y cuello, que conllevan gran carga de discapacidad y ausentismo laboral, ocasionando retiro temprano, restricciones o modificaciones en la práctica quirúrgica. Métodos. Se seleccionaron publicaciones de las bases de datos Pubmed, Embase y LILACS. Se incluyeron todos los estudios que midieron la prevalencia de lesiones musculoesqueléticas y la presencia de riesgo ergonómico, síntomas asociados, uso de escalas de medición y estrategias de prevención. Los efectos estimados de los estudios se mostraron con intervalo de confianza del 95 %. Resultados. Se encontraron 438 estudios. Después de la revisión, se incluyeron 7 estudios, con un total de 868 pacientes. Se estimó mediante un metaanálisis de efectos aleatorios una prevalencia del 81 %. Conclusiones. Los problemas posturales en cirujanos de cabeza y cuello tienen una prevalencia de 81 %. Esto genera un gran impacto en su salud física y mental, aumentando las incapacidades y pérdida de años laborales. Las herramientas utilizadas para la evaluación son heterogéneas y algunos estudios no incluyen datos como los años de práctica y el nivel de entrenamiento.


Introduction. Musculoskeletal injuries have consequences for surgical professionals, and even more so for head and neck surgeons, which entail a large burden of disability and absenteeism from work, causing early retirement, restrictions or modifications in surgical practice. Methods. Publications were selected from the Pubmed, Embase and LILACS databases. All studies that measured the prevalence of musculoskeletal injuries and the presence of ergonomic risk, associated symptoms, use of measurement scales and prevention strategies were included. The estimated effects of the studies were shown with a 95% confidence interval. Results. 438 studies were found. After the review, seven studies were included, with a total of 868 patients. A prevalence of 81% was estimated through a random effects meta-analysis. Conclusions. Postural problems in head and neck surgeons have a prevalence of 81%. This generates a great impact on their physical and mental health, increasing disabilities and loss of working years. The tools used for evaluation are heterogeneous and some studies do not include data such as years of practice and level of training.

Introduction. Several studies have shown population differences in head circumference (HC) that question the universal validity of the World Health Organization (WHO) standard to assess head growth. Objectives. To compare the Argentine reference charts for HC from 0 to 5 years of age with the WHO standards. Population and methods. The 3rd and 97th percentiles for HC based on the Argentine reference charts were compared with the corresponding WHO standard and the percentage of children classified as having microcephaly (HC < 3rd percentile of the WHO) and macrocephaly (HC > 97th percentile of the WHO) at specific ages between 0 and 5 years were estimated. Results. The comparison of the Argentine reference charts with the WHO standards shows that, in both males and females, at the 3rd percentile, the Argentine reference charts are below the WHO standards from 1 to 6 months of age, similar from 9 to 18 months of age, and then above until 60 months old. In relation to the 97th percentile, the Argentine reference charts are above the WHO standards from birth to 60 months in both boys and girls. Conclusions. The head size of Argentine children is different from that established by the WHO standards. The adoption of the WHO standards for our population increases the percentage of macrocephaly diagnosis at all ages.


Introducción. Diversos estudios han evidenciado diferencias poblacionales en el tamaño cefálico que cuestionan la validez universal del estándar de la Organización Mundial de la Salud (OMS) para evaluar el crecimiento cefálico. Objetivos. Comparar las referencias argentinas de perímetro cefálico (PC) de 0 a 5 años con los estándares de la OMS. Población y métodos. Se compararon los percentiles 3 y 97 de PC de las referencias argentinas con los correspondientes del estándar de la OMS y se calcularon los porcentajes de niños clasificados como microcefálicos (PC < percentil 3 de la OMS) y macrocefálicos (PC > percentil 97 de la OMS) a edades específicas entre el nacimiento y los 5 años de edad. Resultados. La comparación de las referencias argentinas con los estándares de la OMS, muestra que ­en ambos sexos­ en el percentil 3, desde el primer mes y hasta los 6 meses, las referencias argentinas se encuentran por debajo de los estándares de la OMS, son similares entre los 9 y 18 meses, y luego se ubican por encima hasta los 60 meses. En relación con el percentil 97, las referencias argentinas se ubican por encima de los estándares de la OMS desde el nacimiento hasta los 60 meses en ambos sexos. Conclusiones. El tamaño cefálico de los niños y niñas argentinos difiere del de los estándares de la OMS. La adopción de los estándares de la OMS en nuestra población incrementa el porcentaje de diagnóstico de macrocefalia a todas las edades.

Mawsonia constitutes one of the most conspicuous fossil coelacanth taxa, due to its unique anatomy and possible maximum body size. It typifies Mesozoic coelacanth morphology, before the putative disappearance of the group in the fossil record. In this work, the three-dimensional cranial anatomy and body size estimations of this genus are re-evaluated from a recently described specimen from Upper Jurassic deposits of Uruguay. The 3D restoration was performed directly on the material based on anatomical information provided by the living coelacanth Latimeria and previous two-dimensional restorations of the head of Mawsonia. The montage was then scanned with computed tomography and virtually adjusted to generate an interactive online resource for future anatomical, taxonomic and biomechanical research. In general terms, the model constitutes a tool to improve both the anatomical knowledge of this genus and its comparison with other coelacanths. It also facilitates the evaluation of possible evolutionary trends and the discussion of particular features with potential palaeobiological implications, such as the anterior position of the eye and the development of the pseudomaxillary fold. Regarding the body size, a previous model for body size estimation based on the gular plate was submitted to OLS, RMA, segmented linear and PGLS regressions (including the evaluation of regression statistics, variance analysis, t-tests and residual analysis). The results point to a power relationship between gular and total lengths showing a better support than a simple linear relationship. The new resulting equations were applied to the studied individual and are provided for future estimates. Although an isometric evolutionary growth cannot be rejected with the available evidence, additional models developed with other bones will be necessary to evaluate possible hidden evolutionary allometric trends in this group of fishes, thus avoiding overestimates.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the growth trajectory of head circumference and neurodevelopment, and to correlate head circumference with cognitive, language, and motor outcomes during the first two years. METHOD: Prospective cohort study in a tertiary hospital including 95 newborns under 32 weeks or 1500 g. Neonates who developed major neonatal morbidities were excluded. The head circumference was measured at birth, at discharge, and at term-equivalent age, 1, 3, 5, 12, 18, and 24 months of corrected age, and the Bayley Scales (Bayley-III) were applied at 12, 18 and 24 months of corrected age to assess cognitive, language and, motor domains. Scores below 85 were classified as mild/moderate deficits and scores below 70 as severe deficits. The association between head circumference Z score and Bayley scores was assessed using Pearson's correlation. The study considered a significance level of 0.05. RESULTS: There was a decrease of -0.18 in the head circumference Z score between birth and discharge and the catch-up occurred between discharge and 1 month (an increase of 0.81 in the Z score). There was a positive correlation between head circumference and Bayley scores at 18 months. There was also a positive correlation between head circumference at discharge and at 5 months with the three domains of the Bayley. CONCLUSION: Serial measurements of head circumference provide knowledge of the trajectory of growth, with early catch-up between discharge and 1 month, as well as its association with neurodevelopment. Head circumference is therefore a valuable clinical marker for neurodevelopment, especially in very preterm newborns.

OBJECTIVES: To investigate the association between the anthropometric status at birth and brain and bone growth during the first year of life. According to the brain-sparing hypothesis, we expect catch-up to be faster in head circumference (HC) than in body length. METHODS: This is a longitudinal design that included Argentinian infants under 12 months of age with at least three anthropometric records. We classified study participants into four growth status categories according to z-scores for HC (HCZ) and length (LAZ) at birth, with z-score = -2 as a threshold. We used the Count model to describe growth trajectories in HC and length in the first year of life according to the growth status at birth. Recovery indicator for HC and length was taken as the time until the predicted growth trajectory surpassed the threshold curve predicted by z-score = -2 for age. RESULTS: Growth models included 3399 infants. There were significant differences in the growth parameters between groups in all cases (p < 0.05). Within the group with a low HCZ and a low LAZ at birth, HC recovery was faster than length. In the case of a low z-score for only one of the variables, newborns with a low HCZ recovered faster than individuals born with a low LAZ. CONCLUSIONS: The postnatal growth pattern in HC and length is associated with the growth status of HC and length at birth. As we hypothesized, the fastest postnatal recovery occurs for HC in cases of intrauterine delayed growth.

We present a list of Xylocopa Latreille species that occur in Maranho State, a region where several physiognomic formations characteristic of the Amazon, Cerrado, and Caatinga biomes overlap. The information was compiled through numerous surveys conducted in this territory, in addition to direct consultation in scientific collections, which have many unpublished records. Twelve species belonging to three subgenera were documented: Xylocopa (Neoxylocopa) amazonica Enderlein, 1913, X. (N.) aurulenta (Fabricius, 1804), X. (N.) cearensis Ducke, 1910, X. (N.) frontalis (Olivier, 1789), X. (N.) grisescens Lepeletier, 1841, X. (N.) hirsutissima Maidl, 1912, X. (N.) nigrocincta Smith, 1854, X. (N.) transitoria Prez, 1901, X. (Schonnherria) macrops Lepeletier, 1841, X. (S.) muscaria (Fabricius, 1775), X. (S.) subcyanea Prez, 1901 and X. (Stenoxylocopa) sp. Of these, two species are reported as first records for Maranho (X. hirsutissima and X. subcyanea), one for Brazil (X. transitoria), and one for science (X. (Stenoxylocopa) sp.not yet published).

Prestosuchus chiniquensis is the best represented pseudosuchian archosaur from the Pinheiros-Chiniquá Sequence, Middle-Late Triassic (Ladinian/Carnian) of the Santa Maria Supersequence, Southern Brazil. Several incomplete specimens attributed to this species have been described, but the morphology of the postcranial skeleton of P. chiniquensis is poorly known. In this contribution we present the postcranial material of the UFRGS-PV-0629-T specimen, concluding its description, as its skull and endocast have already been described. Additionally, histological data provided new information on the poorly known ontogenetic series of P. chiniquensis, and on its growth patterns suggesting a longer period of slow growth when compared to other basal Loricata species. A phylogenetic analysis placed UFRGS-PV-0629-T in a group composed by the lectotype, paralectotype, and other described P. chiniquensis specimens, further corroborating our taxonomic hypothesis, that specimens of basal Loricata collected in Brazil are closely related to each other. Due to the association of characters found in the phylogenetic analysis, the specimen UFRGS-PV-0629-T is attributed as the most complete material ever found for P. chiniquensis. As such, it is clear that the material presented here provides important new information on P. chiniquensis. Based on the results presented here, we revised the diagnosis for P. chiniquensis. However, it also evidences the need for new discoveries and studies of other specimens seeking to understand this and other closely related species, which were important components of worldwide trophic webs of the Triassic biotas.

BACKGROUND: Increased intracranial pressure (ICP) consists of a set of signs and symptoms related to changes in intracranial compliance (ICC) and ICP. OBJECTIVE: This study presents a retrospective analysis of patients who underwent non-invasive monitoring of ICC based on complaints of headache, correlating decreased brain compliance and increased intracranial pressure. METHODS: Noninvasive ICC monitoring was performed using a Brain4care device, which contains a strain gauge and a recorder connected to a mechanical device that touches the scalp surface in the frontoparietal area lateral to the sagittal suture. This tool monitors the ICP by identifying small changes in skull measurements that are caused by pressure variations, i.e., skull deformation is associated with the detection of changes in mean ICP. A clinical evaluation of 32 patients with complaints of headache occurred from the analysis of their medical records. RESULTS: Of the 32 patients initially chosen, it was possible to complete the analysis of 18 due to the availability of data in the medical records. From the non-invasive monitoring of the ICC, the following data were collected: time-to-peak, P2/P1 ratio, age, and gender. From the statistical analysis of age and P2/P1 ratio, it was noted that as age increases, ICC tends to decrease regardless of sex (p < 0.05). CONCLUSION: This study concluded that there is a correlation between changes in intracranial compliance and headache complaints in outpatients. There was also a relationship between age and decreased intracranial compliance but without a specific pain pattern.


ANTECEDENTES: O aumento da pressão intracraniana (PIC) consiste em um conjunto de sinais e sintomas relacionados a mudanças na complacência intracraniana (CIC) e na PIC. OBJETIVO: Este estudo apresenta uma análise retrospectiva de pacientes que foram submetidos ao monitoramento não invasivo da CIC com base em queixas de cefaleia, correlacionando a diminuição da complacência cerebral e o aumento da pressão intracraniana. MéTODOS: O monitoramento não invasivo da CIC foi realizado utilizando um dispositivo Brain4Care, que contém um medidor de tensão e um gravador conectado a um dispositivo mecânico que toca a superfície do couro cabeludo na área frontoparietal lateral à sutura sagital. Esta ferramenta monitora a PIC identificando pequenas alterações nas medidas do crânio que são causadas por variações de pressão, ou seja, a deformação do crânio está associada à detecção de alterações na PIC média. Uma avaliação clínica de 32 pacientes com queixas de cefaleia ocorreu a partir da análise de seus prontuários médicos. RESULTADOS: Dos 32 pacientes inicialmente escolhidos, foi possível concluir a análise de 18 devido à disponibilidade de dados nos prontuários médicos. A partir do monitoramento não invasivo da CIC, foram coletados os seguintes dados: time-to-peak, relação P2/P1, idade e sexo. Da análise estatística de idade e relação P2/P1, observou-se que à medida em que a idade aumenta, a CIC tende a diminuir independentemente do sexo (p < 0,05). CONCLUSãO: Este estudo concluiu que existe uma correlação entre as mudanças na CIC e a queixa de cefaleia em pacientes ambulatoriais. The world is facing a major pulse of ecological and social changes that may favor the risk of zoonotic outbreaks. Such risk facilitation may occur through the modification of the host's community diversity and structure, leading to an increase in pathogen reservoirs and the contact rate between these reservoirs and humans. Here, we examined whether anthropization alters the relative abundance and richness of zoonotic reservoir and non-reservoir rodents in three Socio-Ecological Systems. We hypothesized that anthropization increases the relative abundance and richness of rodent reservoirs while decreasing non-reservoir species. We first developed an Anthropization index based on 15 quantitative socio-ecological variables classified into five groups: 1) Vegetation type, 2) Urbanization degree, 3) Water quality, 4) Potential contaminant sources, and 5) Others. We then monitored rodent communities in three regions of Northwestern Mexico (Baja California, Chihuahua, and Sonora). A total of 683 rodents of 14 genera and 27 species were captured, nine of which have been identified as reservoirs of zoonotic pathogens (359 individuals, 53%). In all regions, we found that as anthropization increased, the relative abundance of reservoir rodents increased; in contrast, the relative abundance of non-reservoir rodents decreased. In Sonora, reservoir richness increased with increasing anthropization, while in Baja California and Chihuahua non-reservoir richness decreased as anthropization increased. We also found a significant positive relationship between the anthropization degree and the abundance of house mice (Mus musculus) and deer mice (Peromyscus maniculatus), the most abundant reservoir species in the study. These findings support the hypothesis that reservoir species of zoonotic pathogens increase their abundance in disturbed environments, which may increase the risk of pathogen exposure to humans, while anthropization creates an environmental filtering that promotes the local extinction of non-reservoir species.

In the modern world, cancer is a growing cause of mortality, but archeological studies have shown that it is not exclusive to modern populations. The aim of this study is to examine the epidemiologic, social, and clinicopathologic features of head and neck cancers in ancient populations. To do this, we extracted all records that described malignant lesions in the head and neck region available in the Cancer Research in Ancient Bodies Database (CRAB). The estimated age, sex, physical condition of the remains (skeletonized, mummified), anatomic location of tumors, geographic location, chronology, tumor type, and methods of tumor diagnosis were collected. One hundred and sixty-seven cases were found, mostly originating from Europe (51.5%). Most records were of adults between 35 and 49 years of age (37.7%). The most involved site was the skullcap (60.4%), and the most common malignancies were metastases to the bone (65.3%) and multiple myeloma (17.4%). No primary soft tissue malignancies were registered. The results of our study indicate that head and neck cancers were present in ancient civilizations, at least since 500,000 BCE. The available data can help to improve the current understanding of the global distribution of head and neck cancer and its multidimensional impacts on populations in the contemporary world.

The fissure fill localities of southwest England and South Wales are well-known for preserving rich assemblages of predominantly small-bodied Late Triassic to Early Jurassic tetrapods, but many aspects of these assemblages remain contentious. The age of the Late Triassic fissures is disputed, with some lines of argument suggesting a latest Triassic (Rhaetian) age, whereas other evidence suggests they may be as old as Carnian. The fissures have been hypothesized by some workers to have formed on an archipelago, with island effects invoked to explain aspects of the assemblages such as the abundance of small-bodied species. Procolophonids were a successful group of Triassic parareptiles, best known from Early to early Late Triassic assemblages, but have only recently been described from one of the fissure fill sites (Ruthin) based upon fragmentary remains. Here, we describe new procolophonid specimens from another fissure (Cromhall) that represent at least six individuals of different sizes, with much of the skeleton represented including well-preserved skull material. The Cromhall procolophonid shows strong similarities to Late Triassic procolophonids from Scotland, Brazil and North America, but both autapomorphies and a unique character combination demonstrate that it represents a new species, which we name as Hwiccewyrm trispiculum gen. et sp. nov. Phylogenetic analysis places Hwiccewyrm in a derived clade within Leptopleuroninae, together with Leptopleuron, Hypsognathus, and Soturnia. The largest specimens of Hwiccewyrm demonstrate a body size that is similar to Leptopleuron and Hypsognathus, supporting other recent work that has questioned the insular dwarfism hypothesis for the fissure fill assemblages.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Transorbital ventricular puncture is a minimally invasive described procedure with poor landmarks and anatomic references. This approach can be easily performed to save patients with intracranial hypertension, especially when it is secondary to an acute decompensated hydrocephalus. This study aims to describe anatomic structures and landmarks to facilitate the execution of transorbital puncture in emergency cases. METHODS: We analyzed 120 head computed tomographies to show the best area to perform the procedure in the orbital roof. Two adult cadavers (4 sides) were punctured in the predetermined area. Angles, distances, landmarks, and anatomic structures were registered. This approach to the ventricular system may be performed at bedside to relieve intracranial hypertension only in specific cases. RESULTS: The perforation point is 2.5 cm (female) or 3.0 cm (male) lateral to the midline and immediately inferior to the superciliary arch. A vertical line, parallel to midline, was drawn on the outer edge of the patient's forehead, the needle was 45° inferiorly and 20° medially and then progressed 2.0 cm backwards to reach the bone perforation point. After that, it was advanced another 4.5cm approximately until it reached the anterior horn of the lateral ventricle. CONCLUSION: Based on statistical and experimental evidences, we were able to establish reliable anatomic reference points to access the anterior horn of the lateral ventricle through transorbital puncture.

The present study aimed to determine references of normality of computed tomographic (CT) images of mandibular and parotid salivary glands (PSGs), medial retropharyngeal and mandibular lymph nodes and thyroid gland of 10 clinically healthy crab-eating foxes, Cerdocyon thous. The location, shape, homogeneity of the parenchyma, and length, height, width and pre- and post-contrast attenuation values were evaluated. The anatomical structures in the crab-eating foxes studied here presented anatomical landmarks similar to those described for domestic dogs, and showed a regular shape and homogenous parenchyma, except for the PSGs, that showed predominantly heterogeneous parenchyma. The thyroid gland topography in the crab-eating fox, though very similar, is not identical to the domestic dog and the presence of isthmus between the lobes was not detected. The values obtained from crab-eating foxes are within the normal range, although in the upper limits of dogs. There was a significant difference in the attenuation values between the right and left lobes of the thyroid gland, being greater in the left thyroid lobe. CT attenuation values ranges for this neotropical canid can be incorporated into routine staging procedures in the veterinary care of the crab-eating foxes. Furthermore, the CT images obtained were similar to those of healthy dogs, and the information obtained can be considered as initial tomographic references of normality in the cervical structures of the crab-eating fox, in order to aid in the diagnosis of future diseases that can affect this neotropical canid.

In this contribution we describe a new genus and species of gomphodontosuchine cynodont from the Late Triassic Hyperodapedon Assemblage Zone (AZ) of the Santa Maria Supersequence of southern Brazil, based on material collected 20 years ago. The new taxon, Santagnathus mariensis gen. et sp. nov., is based on numerous cranial and postcranial remains, which altogether provide data on several parts of the skeleton. Santagnathus mariensis is closely related to Siriusgnathus niemeyerorum and Exaeretodon spp. and expands the knowledge about gomphodontosuchine cynodonts. Morphologically, the new species has a skull bauplan particularly similar to S. niemeyerorum and E. riograndensis, differing from them by a unique combination of traits such as three upper incisors, the absence of a descending process in the jugal, a more posterior position of the postorbital bar and a preorbital region larger than the temporal one. The new traversodontid was found associated with the rhynchosaur Hyperodapedon sp., corroborating the assignment of the cynodont fossils to the Hyperodapedon AZ. We also provide comments on the status of the Argentine traversodontid cynodont Proexaeretodon vincei, typically considered a junior synonym of Exaeretodon argentinus, and here accepted as a valid taxon.

PURPOSE: The management of depressed skull fractures in infants can be either conservative or surgical. This study aimed to examine the outcomes of management with a negative-pressure vacuum device on depressed skull fractures in newborns. METHODS: Twenty-eight patients (aged 1-6 days) with simple depressed skull fractures underwent skull elevation using negative-pressure vacuum devices. A protocol for nonsurgical management was adopted for infants with such fractures between 2010 and 2023. All patients were initially evaluated with neurological examination and complementary assessments-hematological and coagulation studies, transfontanel transcranial ultrasound, skull radiography, and computed tomography scanning with three-dimensional reconstruction-according to availability and clinical needs. Gentle (negative) extraction pressure was applied with one of several devices (according to institutional availability) for a maximum duration of 60 s; this was performed as soon as possible after diagnosis, preferably within 72 h. Follow-up data, available in the clinical records, were reported. RESULTS: All patients exhibited satisfactory elevation of the depressed bone without associated injuries, except one patient who presented with an associated cephalohematoma which prevented optimal device coupling to generate sufficient vacuum pressure for correction. Neither neurological deficits nor development of epilepsy was noted; normal neurological assessment and oral alimentation tolerance were confirmed within 24 h post procedure. CONCLUSIONS: According to our data, ping-pong skull fracture elevation using the vacuum method is a safe and satisfactory treatment in the neonatal period. Early treatment allows for quick resolution, and in our opinion is the strategy of choice for depressed skull fractures in newborns.
