The influence of oxygen on the thermal treatment (TT) of secondary metabolite-enriched extracts (SMEEs) from Tórtola beans and procyanidin C1 (PC1) on the inhibition of advanced glycation end products (AGEs) generation in proteins was investigated. SMEE was incubated at 4 °C (control) or thermally treated at 60 °C for 2 h, at either 0 % O2 (I) or 20 % O2 (II). Treatments I and II increased the content of procyanidin dimers B2. Treatment II was more effective than the control or treatment I in preventing homocysteine oxidation and AGEs generation. TT of PC1 at 0 % or 20 % O2 generated procyanidin dimers and tetramers. PC1 TT at 20 % O2 exhibited higher oxidation potentials and lower IC50 values of fluorescent AGEs than those of controls or TT at 0 % O2. These findings indicate that SMEE from Tórtola beans after treatment II changes the degree of polymerization and oxidation procyanidins, thereby increasing their antiglycation activity.

Introduction: Breast cancer survivors often experience pre and post-treatment physical and psychological symptoms, negatively affecting their quality of life. Regular physical exercise is associated with better quality of life and lower recurrence of cancer, and therefore all oncological patients are recommended to practice it in a regular basis. Despite this, breast cancer survivors have low adherence to physical exercise. The purpose of this study is to identify barriers, facilitators and preferences of Chilean breast cancer survivors to practice physical exercise. Methods: Phenomenological qualitative study of 12 in-depth interviews with adjuvant radiation therapy concluded at least three months ago. Results: Breast cancer survivors ignored the benefits of physical exercise during and after treatment. The barriers were physical symptoms, psychological barriers, sociocultural barriers, health system barriers, disinformation and sedentary lifestyle. Facilitators were coping with physical symoptoms, psychological issues, having information and active lifestyle. The preferences were painless and familiar exercises. Preferred exercise was walking. Conclusions: Breast cancer survivors may adhere to physical exercise despite barriers when certain facilitators are present, which may be promoted by the health team when reporting the benefits of the physical exercise, prescribing personalized, safe and painless physical exercise and educating both patient and her family about the role of the physical exercise in cancer recovering process.
Introducción: Las sobrevivientes de cáncer de mama suelen ver afectada negativamente su calidad de vida por síntomas físicos y psicológicos pre y post tratamiento. La práctica regular de ejercicio físico se asocia a mejor calidad de vida y menor recurrencia del cáncer, por esto es recomendado a todos los pacientes oncológicos. Sin embargo, existe baja adherencia a este. El propósito de este artículo es identificar barreras, facilitadores y preferencias de sobrevivientes de cáncer de mama chilenas para realizar ejercicio físico. Métodos: Estudio cualitativo fenomenológico, basado en entrevistas en profundidad a 12 sobrevivientes de cáncer de mama que terminaron la radioterapia adyuvante hace tres o más meses. Resultados: Las sobrevivientes de cáncer de mama desconocían la importancia del ejercicio físico durante y después del tratamiento. Las barreras identificadas fueron síntomas físicos, barreras psicológicas, socioculturales, del sistema de salud; desinformación y sedentarismo. Los facilitadores fueron físicos, psicológicos, contar con información y práctica de ejercicio físico antes del diagnóstico. Las preferencias fueron ejercicios indoloros y familiares. El ejercicio preferido fue caminar. Conclusiones: Es posible que las sobrevivientes de cáncer de mama adhieran al ejercicio físico, a pesar de las barreras cuando hay ciertos facilitadores presentes. Estos pueden ser generados por el equipo médico al informar los beneficios del ejercicio físico, prescribir ejercicio físico personalizado, seguro e indoloro y educar a la paciente y a su familia sobre el rol del ejercicio físico en la recuperación de sobrevivientes de cáncer de mama.

Given the high prevalence of skeletal and mandibular diseases in the Patagonian Huemul, comprehensive anatomical studies are essential to understand the impact of nutritional deficiencies and support conservation efforts. The aim of this study is to provide a detailed anatomical characterisation of three exhumed mandibles of Patagonian huemul (Hippocamelus bisulcus) through three-dimensional reconstructions obtained from computed tomography data and semi-automatic segmentation, documenting their distinctive features. The findings revealed distinctive features in the mandible, consistent with the browsing habits of herbivores, such as a robust coronoid process, a wide and deep pterygoid fossa, a significantly lower mandibular condyle compared to other deer species and a unique configuration of the mandibular canal with a curved caudal portion and a straight rostral portion. These anatomical adaptations are likely related to the species' feeding habits and behaviour. The study also addressed the challenges of researching an endangered species, given that access to biological material is restricted by strict regulations in Chile and Argentina. These restrictions limited the available sample size and hindered the acquisition of additional specimens, which could affect the generalisation of the results. Despite these limitations, the research provides valuable anatomical insights that are fundamental for the biology, clinical practice and management of specimens. In conclusion, the mandibles of both juvenile and adult Patagonian huemul demonstrate distinctive features characteristic of browsing herbivores. The findings can serve as a basis for future comparative studies on mandibular anatomy and function in this endangered deer species as well as in other herbivorous deer.

BACKGROUND: Depressive disorders are a critical public health concern in Chile. Nonetheless, there is a lack of evidence regarding the identification of depressive symptom clusters. The objective was to identify depressive symptom clusters among Chilean young adults and examine how demographic, and lifestyle factors as well as social support can influence and predict them. METHODS: Cross-sectional study conducted among 1,000 participants from the Limache cohort 2. A latent class analysis (LCA) was performed to identify depressive symptom clusters, using the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9). Multinomial logistic regression was then applied to explore the associations between identified classes and potential predictors. The models were adjusted by age and sex. RESULTS: Three latent classes of depressive symptoms were identified: minimal (25.7%); somatic (50.7%) and severe (23.6%). In the severe class for eight out nine depressive symptoms the probabilities were above 50%, and the probability of suicidal ideation was almost a third in this class. Being female (Adjusted Odds ratio [AOR], 2.49; 95% confidence interval [CI] [1.63-3.81]), current smoker (AOR, 1.74; 95% CI [1.15-2.65]), having basic education (AOR, 3.12; 95% CI [1.30-7.53]) and obesity (AOR, 2.72; 95% CI [1.61-4.59]) significantly increased the likelihood of belonging to severe class. Higher social support decreased the odds of being in the somatic (OR, 0.96; 95% CI [0.93-0.98]) and severe (OR, 0.92; 95% CI [0.90-0.94]) classes. CONCLUSIONS: These findings highlight the importance of individualized intervention strategies for depression management. Also, the study suggests that nutritional status and social support should be considered when addressing depression in this population.

The English grain aphid, Sitobion avenae, is a significant agricultural pest affecting wheat, barley, and oats. In Chile, the most prevalent and persistent clone (superclone) of S. avenae harbors the facultative endosymbiont bacterium Regiella insecticola. To determine the role of this bacterium in the reproductive success of this superclone, the presence of R. insecticola was manipulated to assess its impact on (1) the reproductive performance of this clone on two host plant species (wheat and barley), (2) the production of winged morphs, (3) changes in the insects' proteomic profiles, and (4) the root/shoot ratio of plant. It was found that the reproductive performance of this S. avenae superclone varied across host plants, depending on the presence of the facultative bacterial endosymbiont. Aphids infected with R. insecticola showed higher reproductive success on wheat, while the opposite effect was observed on barley. Aphid biomass was greater when infected with R. insecticola, particularly on barley. Additionally, aphids harboring R. insecticola exhibited a higher proportion of winged individuals on both host plants. Protein regulation in aphids on wheat was lower compared to those on barley. A higher root/shoot biomass ratio was observed in wheat plants compared to barley when infested by R. insecticola-infected aphid. Thus, R. insecticola significantly influences the reproductive performance and proteomic profile of a S. avenae superclone, with these effects shaped by the host plant. This suggests that the interaction between the host plant and the facultative endosymbiont contributes to the ecological success of this superclone.

BACKGROUND: Food waste is a global issue affecting society from environmental, nutritional, and social perspectives. In collaboration with the National Board of Preschools, fruit and vegetable waste generated during the preparation of lunch was quantified in four preschools in the Metropolitan area of Santiago in Chile. METHODS: This study was conducted in four preschools, two in the Western area of Santiago and two in the Eastern area, of which two hold environmental quality certifications. Over a five-day period, the weight of raw materials and waste from vegetables (peels) and fruit (pomace) were measured. Percentages of vegetable and fruit post-cleaning losses and waste were evaluated. RESULTS: Vegetable loss exceeded 20% in 31% of the preschools, primarily from carrots and potatoes. Fruit losses were higher, with pears accounting for the most significant waste, recorded in 75% of the study centers. No differences in vegetable loss was found between centers, while variations were observed for fruit. Preschools with environmental quality certifications wasted less onions (p = 0.016) but more pears (p = 0.036). CONCLUSIONS: There is higher fruit loss than vegetable loss, with onions and tomatoes being the least wasted. Possessing an environmental quality certification does not guarantee a significant reduction in overall losses. Handling and storage conditions may play a key role in minimizing losses. Further studies are needed to provide evidence that can guide improvements in Chile's National Board of Preschools services, aiming for a more sustainable lunch preparation processes.

PURPOSE: Gallbladder cancer (GBC) is a biliary tract malignancy characterized by its high lethality. Although the incidence of GBC is low in most countries, specific areas such as Chile display a high incidence. Our collaborative study sought to compare clinical and molecular features of GBC cohorts from Chile and the United States with a focus on ERBB2 alterations. METHODS: Patients were accrued at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSK) or the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile (PUC). Clinical information was retrieved from medical records. Genomic analysis was performed by the next-generation sequencing platform MSK-Integrated Mutation Profiling of Actionable Cancer Targets. RESULTS: A total of 260 patients with GBC were included, 237 from MSK and 23 from PUC. There were no significant differences in the clinical characteristics between the patients identified at MSK and at PUC except in terms of lithiasis prevalence which was significantly higher in the PUC cohort (85% v 44%; P = .0003). The prevalence of ERBB2 alterations was comparable between the two cohorts (15% v 9%; P = .42). Overall, ERBB2 alterations were present in 14% of patients (8% with ERBB2 amplification, 4% ERBB2 mutation, 1.5% concurrent amplification and mutation, and 0.4% ERBB2 fusion). Notably, patients with GBC that harbored ERBB2 alterations had better overall survival (OS) versus their ERBB2-wild type counterparts (22.3 months v 11.8 months; P = .024). CONCLUSION: The prevalence of lithiasis seems to be higher in Chilean versus US patients with GBC. A similar prevalence of ERBB2 alterations of overall 14% and better OS suggests that a proportion of them could benefit from human epidermal growth factor receptor type 2-targeted therapies. The smaller cohort of Chile, where the disease prevalence is higher, is a reminder and invitation for the need of more robust next-generation sequencing analyses globally.

BACKGROUND: Venezuelan migration has experienced an unprecedented increase in the last decade, with approximately 7.7 million Venezuelan-born individuals residing in other countries as of 2024. Our study aims to identify the potential and actual demand for healthcare services (SRH) in the Venezuelan diaspora's four primary destinations within the Andean Countries: Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, and Chile. METHODS: Using official data from administrative records, censuses, and sample surveys reported by the host countries and international agencies, we estimate the annual evolution of Venezuelan-born women of reproductive age (WRA) and their offspring. Additionally, we conduct two case studies focusing on Colombia and Chile to analyse the groups most vulnerable to unmet health needs. RESULTS: The population of WRA has increased to between 5 and 6.8%, and births have risen to approximately 3-8% in host countries due to Venezuelan migration. Yet, we found a general decrease in health coverage for certain age groups of Venezuelan female migrants in host countries for the period 2017-2022, particularly in Chile. By 2022, an estimated 20% of healthcare needs remained unmet among children, girls, and younger Venezuelan women, contributing to greater health inequalities between Venezuelan-born adolescents and those from other countries of birth. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings highlight the escalating demand for and limited access to healthcare services among Venezuelan WRA in their destinations. Unmet healthcare needs are particularly prevalent among younger women by 2022, underscoring the urgency for health system to incorporate gender-responsive, equitable interventions and ensuring health rights for high-risk migrant groups such as infants, children, adolescents, and younger women. Addressing these challenges remains a critical task for the regional public health agenda in Latin America.

Bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV) causes ongoing economic losses to cattle industries, directly through reduced herd performance or indirectly through control program costs. ELISA assays, one of the most widely used techniques due to their ease of implementation, have been a valuable tool for mass surveillance and detection of BVDV. In this study, we developed a new indirect ELISA (rE2-ELISA) for serologic detection of BVDV. The assay considers three recombinant E2 protein subtypes as antigens, allowing serologic diagnosis of BVDV-1b (high prevalence worldwide), BVDV-1d and 1e (high prevalence in southern Chile) sub-genotypes. Recombinant E2 (rE2) proteins were successfully expressed in stably transfected CHO cells. Conditions for rE2 ELISAs were established after determining appropriate concentrations of antigen, blocking agent, secondary antibody, and serum dilutions to achieve maximum discrimination between positive and negative serum samples. The developed rE2-ELISA showed a sensitivity of 92.86% and a specificity of 98.33%. Clinical testing of 180 serum samples from herds in southern Chile showed high accuracy (kappa > 0.8) compared to the commercial BVDV Total Ab kit (IDEXX), with 95.37% positive and 87.5% negative predictive value. In addition, the rE2 ELISA has shown the capability to detect anti-BVDV antibodies from naturally infected animals with sub-genotypes 1b, 1e, or undetermined. These results indicate that the developed indirect ELISA could serve as a valid, and efficient alternative for identifying BVDV-infected animals, thus contributing to the success of disease control and eradication programs.

Introduction: Breast cancer progression involves physiological mechanisms such as metastasis. Delays in diagnosis and treatment increase the risk of mortality and are associated with barriers to healthcare access. In Chile, breast cancer is highly prevalent, and early diagnosis has improved, although disparities in the disease evolution persist. This study characterized diagnostic and staging tests, waiting times, and sociodemographic profiles to identify delays and inequities in care. Methods: Survey study. Using a non-probabilistic sample, a questionnaire was applied in an encrypted platform with prior informed consent. The instrument collected data on requested tests, associated times, staging, and sociodemographic characteristics. These variables were analyzed using descriptive statistics, tests of association, confidence intervals, and comparison tests using bootstrapping. Results: A sample of 263 persons was obtained. The most requested tests were biopsy (99.62%) and blood tests (80.23%). The median number of tests requested was six (Q1:4, Q3:8), with a mean of 5.87 (standard deviation: 2.24). No significant differences were observed in the percentage of persons from whom the total number of examinations were requested according to the studied variables. The day-hour-result intervals ranged from 1 to 365 days. The median day-hour-result of the biopsy was 15 days (Q1:10, Q3:30). People between 40 and 49 years old, non-residents of the capital city, belonging to income quintile I, with high school education, from the public health system, with late-stage diagnosis had higher median day-hour-result in biopsy. There was no significant difference in the number of requested tests according to staging (I and II, or III and IV). Conclusions: Biopsy in Chile is the test of choice for diagnostic confirmation in breast cancer. Other tests are requested regardless of the diagnosis stage, contrary to the recommendations of clinical guidelines. Cancer prognosis is crucial, especially in countries with greater inequalities.

Los retrasos en diagnóstico y tratamiento aumentan el riesgo de mortalidad y se asocian a barreras de acceso a la salud. En Chile, el cáncer de mama es altamente prevalente y su diagnóstico temprano ha mejorado, aunque persisten disparidades en el proceso de enfermedad. Este estudio caracterizó exámenes de diagnóstico y etapificación, tiempos de espera y perfiles sociodemográficos para identificar demoras e inequidades en la atención. Métodos: Estudio de encuesta. Utilizando una muestra no probabilística, se aplicó un cuestionario en plataforma encriptada previo consentimiento informado. En el instrumento se recogieron datos de exámenes solicitados, tiempos asociados, etapificación y características sociodemográficas. Estas variables fueron analizadas utilizando estadística descriptiva, test de asociación, intervalos de confianza y test de comparación utilizando . Resultados: Se logró una muestra de 263 personas. Los exámenes más solicitados fueron biopsia (99,62%) y exámenes de sangre (80,23%). La mediana de exámenes solicitados fue de 6 (Q1:4, Q3:8), con media 5,87 (desviación estándar: 2,24). No se observaron diferencias significativas en el porcentaje de personas a quienes se solicitó la totalidad de exámenes según variables estudiadas. Los intervalos día-hora-resultado oscilaron entre 1 y 365 días. La mediana día-hora-resultado de la biopsia fue de 15 días (Q1:10, Q3:30). Las personas entre 40 y 49 años, no residentes de la capital, pertenecientes al quintil I de ingreso, con educación media, del sistema público de salud, con diagnóstico en etapa tardía presentaron mayores medianas de día-hora-resultado en biopsia. No hubo diferencia significativa en la cantidad de exámenes solicitados según etapificación (I a II y III a IV). Conclusiones: La biopsia en Chile es el examen de elección para la confirmación diagnóstica en cáncer de mama. Otros exámenes son solicitados independientemente de la etapa del diagnóstico, existiendo una discordancia con las recomendaciones de la guía clínica. El pronóstico del cáncer es crucial, especialmente en países con mayores inequidades.

OBJECTIVE: To provide local policymakers with a guideline of potential actions to prevent the high consumption of Non-Nutritive Sweeteners (NNS) among children and adolescents observed in Chile, given the potential health problems related to NNS intake. DESIGN: The Delphi method was used for the evaluation of twenty-one recommendations to decrease the intake of NNS in paediatric population, with the participation of a panel of relevant actors. SETTING: The proposed recommendations were developed by the research team using the NOURISHING framework; potential actions were based on the increase in the use and intake of NNS by Chilean children, current local food regulations, recommendations of health organisations and foreign policy experiences. PARTICIPANTS: Twenty-five relevant actors related to NNS, nutrition, food technology and paediatrics (out of thirty-nine invitations made to scholars, professional institutions and civil society's organisations) participated in the Delphi study. RESULTS: A consensus was reached on nine recommendations regarding relevance and feasibility to be part of the guideline. Recommendations involved measures mostly related to improving the delivery of information (food content and potential health effects of NNS), supporting the generation of more evidence of NNS health effects and substitutes, and marketing restrictions when targeted to children. CONCLUSIONS: The process produced a nine-action guideline to reduce the excessive NNS consumption among Chilean children and adolescents. Developed through a consensus-driven approach among key stakeholders, this guideline provides policymakers with a framework to adopt a precautionary stance, particularly concerning vulnerable populations, given the currently inconclusive evidence on the long-term health effects of NNS consumption.

BACKGROUND: In Chile demand for specialist care following exposure to interpersonal violence (IPV) in youth far exceeds capacity. Group interventions may improve access to care for youth. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effectiveness and acceptability of two low-intensity group interventions: Trama Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT); Interpersonal Psychotherapy (IPT); and treatment as usual, Art therapy-based support (ATBS). Outcomes measured were post-traumatic stress symptoms, depression, interpersonal functioning and affect regulation. PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING: Participants were 67 Chilean youth aged 13-17 years, victims of IPV on a waiting list to receive specialist individual intervention. METHODS: Using a randomised controlled trial design, participants were randomly assigned to one of the interventions. Self-report measures were completed at 5 timepoints between baseline and follow up eight weeks after intervention ended. Dropout rates and attendance were also analysed. RESULTS: TF-CBT showed significant decreases for PTSD (d = 0.91) and depression (d = 0.77) symptoms, sustained at follow-up with affect regulation problems also showing significant decrease from baseline (d = 0.43). IPT showed significant decreases in PTSD symptoms (d = 0.64) and affect regulation problems (d = 0.66), both sustained at follow-up. ATBS showed statistically significant decrease for PTSD (d = 0.79) and interpersonal problems (d = 0.65) but only change in PTSD was sustained at follow-up. There were no significant differences in dropout or attendance between the interventions. CONCLUSION: Group interventions provide a viable and effective first-phase option for reducing psychological distress in IPV-exposed youth in high-demand contexts. Effectiveness may be further improved through the more active involvement of parents and carers.

Several reptile species have been described as hosts of Trypanosoma cruzi, the causative agent of Chagas disease, and therefore, they have become vertebrates of epidemiological interest. In recent decades, there has been a growing interest in animal welfare, especially in populations with small numbers where lethal sampling could have catastrophic consequences, and non-lethal methodologies have been developed for detecting zoonotic parasites. In this study, we compared three non-lethal sampling methodologies for detecting T. cruzi DNA in 21 captured specimens of the native lizard Liolaemus monticola, collected from the semiarid Mediterranean ecosystem of Chile. Specimens were subjected to xenodiagnosis (XD), tail clipping, and living syringe sampling procedures to evaluate whether lizards could serve as sentinel species for T. cruzi in endemic regions. To detect the protozoan, real-time PCR (qPCR) was performed on the DNA extracted from the samples (intestinal contents, tail tissues, and blood from living syringes). Trypanosoma cruzi DNA was detected in 12 of 21 lizards, considering all three methodologies. By XD, 12 specimens showed infection (57.1 %), and both living syringe and tail sampling methodologies detected only one infected lizard (4.8 %). Therefore, T. cruzi can be detected in lizards by qPCR using the three methodologies but XD is by far the most effective non-lethal detection methodology. The use of tail and living syringe methodologies showed a large underestimation; however, they might be options for monitoring the presence of T. cruzi in lizard populations when large sample sizes are available.

BACKGROUND: In 2016, Chile implemented a multiphase set of policies that mandated warning labels, restricted food marketing to children, and banned school sales of foods and beverages high in nutrients of concern ("high-in" foods). Chile's law, particularly the warning label component, set the precedent for a rapid global proliferation of similar policies. While our initial evaluation showed policy-linked decreases in purchases of high-in, a longer-term evaluation is needed, particularly as later phases of Chile's law included stricter nutrient thresholds and introduced a daytime ban on advertising of high-in foods for all audiences. The objective is to evaluate changes in purchases of energy, sugar, sodium, and saturated fat purchased after Phase 2 implementation of the Chilean policies. METHODS AND FINDINGS: This interrupted time series study used longitudinal data on monthly food and beverage purchases from 2,844 Chilean households (138,391 household-months) from July 1, 2013 until June 25, 2019. Nutrition facts panel data from food and beverage packages were linked at the product level and reviewed by nutritionists. Products were considered "high-in" if they contained added sugar, sodium, or saturated fat and exceeded nutrient or calorie thresholds. Using correlated random-effects models and an interrupted time series design, we estimated the nutrient content of food and beverage purchases associated with Phase 1 and Phase 2 compared to a counterfactual scenario based on trends during a 36-month pre-policy timeframe. Compared to the counterfactual, we observed significant decreases in high-in purchases of foods and beverages during Phase 2, including a relative 36.8% reduction in sugar (-30.4 calories/capita/day, 95% CI -34.5, -26.3), a 23.0% relative reduction in energy (-51.6 calories/capita/day, 95% CI -60.7, -42.6), a 21.9% relative reduction in sodium (-85.8 mg/capita/day, 95% CI -105.0, -66.7), and a 15.7% relative reduction in saturated fat (-6.4 calories/capita/day, 95% CI -8.4, -4.3), while purchases of not-high-in foods and drinks increased. Reductions in sugar and energy purchases were driven by beverage purchases, whereas reductions in sodium and saturated fat were driven by foods. Compared to the counterfactual, changes in both high-in purchases and not high-in purchases observed in Phase 2 tended to be larger than changes observed in Phase 1. The pattern of changes in purchases was similar for households of lower versus higher socioeconomic status. A limitation of this study is that some results were sensitive to the use of shorter pre-policy time frames. CONCLUSIONS: Compared to a counterfactual based on a 36-month pre-policy timeframe, Chilean policies on food labeling, marketing, and school food sales led to declines in nutrients of concern during Phase 2 of implementation, particularly from foods and drinks high in nutrients of concern. These declines were sustained or even increased over phases of policy implementation.

The South American archaeological record has ample evidence of the socio-cultural dynamism of human populations in the past. This has also been supported through the analysis of ancient genomes, by showing evidence of gene flow across the region. While the extent of these signals is yet to be tested, the growing number of ancient genomes allows for more fine-scaled hypotheses to be evaluated. In this study, we assessed the genetic diversity of individuals associated with the Inka ritual, Qhapaq hucha. As part of this ceremony, one or more individuals were buried with Inka and local-style offerings on mountain summits along the Andes, leaving a very distinctive record. Using paleogenomic tools, we analyzed three individuals: two newly generated genomes from El Plomo Mountain (Chile) and El Toro Mountain (Argentina), and a previously published genome from Argentina (Aconcagua Mountain). Our results reveal a complex demographic scenario with each of the individuals showing different genetic affinities. Furthermore, while two individuals showed genetic similarities with present-day and ancient populations from the southern region of the Inka empire, the third individual may have undertaken long-distance movement. The genetic diversity we observed between individuals from similar cultural contexts supports the highly diverse strategies Inka implemented while incorporating new territories. More broadly, this research contributes to our growing understanding of the population dynamics in the Andes by discussing the implications and temporality of population movements in the region.

AIMS: The aim was to translate and culturally adapt the Yale Food Addiction Scale 2.0 (YFAS 2.0) to the Chilean population, evaluate its psychometric properties in a non-clinical sample, and assess the correlations between symptoms count of food addiction (FA) with demographic and anthropometric variables. METHODS AND PARTICIPANTS: We evaluated 301 participants (59.1% women) with a mean age of 29.7 ± 12.4 years recruited from two universities and two businesses (non-clinical sample). The Chilean YFAS 2.0 was administered, and anthropometric measurements were carried out. The internal consistency of the items was estimated, and factor structure was tested by confirmatory factor analysis. Test-retest reliability was also examined. The correlations between symptoms count of FA and weight, waist circumference (WC), Body Mass Index (BMI), percentage of body fat (BF%), and lean mass were evaluated. RESULTS: The Chilean YFAS 2.0 presented good internal consistency, and confirmatory factor analysis supported the one-factor structure, in accordance with the original version. The ICC indicated excellent test-retest reliability. The prevalence of FA was 10.3%, and the symptom count of FA was 2.1 ± 2.8. A small positive correlation between WC, BMI, and BF % and FA symptom count was found. CONCLUSION: The Chilean YFAS 2.0 may be a useful tool to investigate FA in Chile. (1) Background: To evaluate a model based on the right-to-health approach, considering the impact of associated factors on the future utilization of primary healthcare services among international migrants in Chile. (2) Methods: A cross-sectional design was employed to survey 499 South American migrants residing in Chile. Ad-hoc questionnaires were used to assess their experiences related to the right to health, perceived discrimination, income, education, length of residence, age, marital status, gender, migration status, among others. Correlation analyses were conducted, followed by path analysis with significant variables to assess the fit of two models. (3) Results: Ten variables were identified as significant for path analysis. Among the two evaluated models, the final model identified six variables with significant direct and indirect effects. Among them, the availability, accessibility, acceptability, and quality of healthcare services were positively associated with the future intention to use them. Additionally, perceived racial and ethnic discrimination also had a positive effect on the intention to use healthcare services, suggesting a possible adaptive response to adversity, exhibiting acceptable goodness-of-fit indices (χ2 =241,492; p < 0.001; CFI = 0.913; TLI = 0.82; RMSEA = 0.062; SRMR = 0.05). (4) Conclusions: While the initial model provides valuable insights, it is essential to broaden the analysis to include other factors influencing the specific context of international migrants.

This article examines the role of gender as an embodied site of political control and resistance within Mapuche-Capuchin relations in the early period of Bavarian Capuchin mission-building in Chile (1897-1922). The study frames agricultural science education as a civilizing method employed in the Capuchin mission schools, targeting Mapuche children. The aim was to educate Mapuche children in Christian and Western gender roles, moral behavior, and rural economic occupations. Amid the overarching conflict over land rights and privatization between Mapuche communities and the Chilean government, the state's support for the Capuchin order's evangelizing mission was perceived as a long-term strategy to appropriate Indigenous lands and assimilate the Mapuche into the rural and urban workforce. The article illustrates how the conflict over embodied gender roles disrupted Mapuche socioeconomic relations.

BACKGROUND: Aspergillus fumigatus is a ubiquitous opportunistic pathogen. This fungus can acquire resistance to azole antifungals due to different mutations in the cyp51A gene. Azole resistance has been observed in several continents and appears to be a globally distributed phenomenon. Specific mutations in cyp51A that lead to azole resistance, such as the TR34/L98H modification, have been reported. AIMS: To evaluate the azole resistance in clinically isolated A. fumigatus strains. METHODS: As a result of our passive surveillance strategy, a total of 23 A. fumigatus isolates from clinical origins were identified through a phylogenetic analysis using the ITS region and ß-tubulin gene fragments, and typed with the CSP microsatellite. Azole susceptibility profiles were performed by disk diffusion and microdilution broth methodologies according to CLSI guidelines. RESULTS: Here we describe, for the first time, the detection of azole-resistant A. fumigatus isolates from clinical origins in Chile with mutations in the cyp51A gene. In addition to the TR34/L98H mutation, one isolate exhibited an F46Y/M172V/E427K-type mutation. Furthermore, microsatellite typing based on cell surface protein (CSP) was performed, showing the t02 (TR34/L98H), t15 (F46Y/M172V/E427K) and t01 (susceptible clinical isolates) genotypes. CONCLUSIONS: Our study demonstrates the presence of mutations related to azole resistance in A. fumigatus strains isolated from clinical samples in Chile. In order to obtain information that may help to tackle the spread of antifungal resistance among A. fumigatus populations, and to ensure the efficacy of future treatments against aspergillosis, a further research is necessary.

Little is known about the role of horse flies in potential pathogen transmission in Chile. This study provides evidence of the molecular detection of microorganisms in southern Chile. In the present study, adult Osca lata horse flies were trapped from Punucapa (39°45'06"S/73°16'08"W, Región de Los Ríos) and Puyehue (40°39'10"S/72°10'57"W, Región de Los Lagos), Chile. Among the 95 samples analyzed by PCR using specific primers, microorganisms were detected in 23.2% (n = 22) of the samples. Rickettsia spp. DNA was detected in 15.8% (n = 15) of the samples, Trypanosomatidae DNA in 5.3% (n = 5) of the samples, and filarial DNA in 2.1% (n = 2) of the samples. This study found that horse flies in the region are capable of carrying a variety of both parasites and endosymbionts. Further research is needed to understand the specific impact of horse flies as mechanical or biological vectors and develop effective control measures to prevent the spread of any microorganisms associated with disease.
