Background: Dermal cosmetic fillers have been commonly used in camels in the last few years in Gulf countries. Aim: This study aimed to describe the radiographic as well as sonographic findings of injected cosmetic fillers in Arabian camel perinasal region in beauty shows. Methods: A total number of (n = 11,626) Arabian camels (Camelus dromedarius) were thoroughly investigated for injection of cosmetic fillers in the perinasal area. The age of the camels was 6 months to 10 years, and their weights were 400-650 kg. In parallel, a control group consisting of 30 age/weight-matched non-injected camels was used. Of the 11,626 examined camels, 25 animals (0.0.002%) were injected with cosmetic fillers in the perinasal region. Of the 25 camels, 19 (76%) were females and 6 (24%) were males. Radiographic examinations were carried out for the 25 injected camel perinasal regions. Results: Ultrasonographic examination of the injected perinasal regions revealed precise discrimination of the filler material, which appeared hypo-echogenic in 17 camels (68%) and with anechoic spots in the remaining 8 camels (32%). Variable degrees of swelling caused by the injection of moderate and large quantities of fillers were noted by radiographic assessment, the injected cosmetic filler was precisely diagnosed in the perinasal region as grey in color having soft tissue density in obtained radiographs. Conclusion: In conclusion, radiographic and ultrasonographic examinations are reliable, accurate, and non-invasive diagnostic imaging techniques that can precisely discriminate a filler agent in the soft tissues and determine the situ and size of cutaneous deposits in dromedary camels (C. dromedarius).

Because of changing lifestyles, climate, and increasing pollution, cosmeceuticals are utilized by every individual, thereby making cosmeceuticals a fruitful field for research and the economy. Cosmeceuticals provide incredibly pleasing aesthetic results by fusing the qualities of both cosmetics and medicinal substances. Cosmeceuticals are primarily utilized to improve the appearance of skin by making it smoother, moisturized, and wrinkle-free, in addition to treating dermatological conditions, including photoaging, burns, dandruff, acne, eczema, and erythema. Nanocosmeceuticals are cosmetic products that combine therapeutic effects utilizing nanotechnology, allowing for more precise and effective target-specific delivery of active ingredients, and improving bioavailability.

BACKGROUND: There is a growing trend of individuals wearing cosmetics while participating in physical activities. Nonetheless, there remains a need for further understanding regarding the effects of makeup on the facial epidermis during exercise, given the existing knowledge gaps. PURPOSE: This study aimed to evaluate the effects of a cosmetic foundation cream on skin conditions during physical activity. METHODS: Forty-three healthy college students, 20 males (26.3 ± 1.5 years) and 23 females (23.1 ± 1.0 years), were enrolled in this study. Foundation cream was applied to participants on half of the face in two different areas (MT: makeup T zone and MU: makeup U zone). The other half of the face served as internal control (T: non-makeup T zone and U: non-makeup U zones). Skin levels of moisture, elasticity, pore, sebum, and oil were measured using a skin analysis device (Aramhuvis, Gyeonggi, Republic of Korea) before and after a 20-min treadmill exercise. Paired t-test and independent t-test were performed for skin condition measurements at pre- and postexercise. RESULTS: The skin moisture levels in both the T and MT significantly increased after exercise (p < 0.05) (pre-T: 24.5 ± 1.3, post-T: 38.5 ± 3.5 and pre-MT: 18.7 ± 0.7, post-MT: 40.4 ± 4.8). Elasticity also significantly improved in both the T and MT (p < 0.05) (pre-T: 25.6 ± 1.3, post-T: 41.5 ± 3.5 and pre-MT: 20.0 ± 0.9, post-MT: 41.7 ± 3.7). The size of the pores in the T zone observed a significant increase after exercise (p < 0.05) (pre-T: 41.7 ± 2.1, post-T: 47.8 ± 2.4). The sebum levels in the T zone exhibited a reduction following physical activity, whereas there was a notable increase in sebum levels in the makeup zones (p < 0.05) (pre-MT: 2.4 ± 0.7, post-MT:4.2 ± 0.8 and pre MU 1.8 ± 0.34, post MU 4.9 ± 0.9). The oil level was increased in the non-makeup zones (pre-T: 6.1 ± 1.4, post-T: 11.8 ± 2.0 and pre-U: 7.3 ± 1.5, post-U: 11.9 ± 1.9; p < 0.05) and decreased in the makeup zones (pre-MT: 13.3 ± 1.9, post-MT: 7.4 ± 2.3 and pre-MU: 22.1 ± 2.4, post-MU: 3.2 ± 1.0; p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: The findings suggest that using foundation cream during aerobic exercise can reduce skin oil, causing dryness. Additionally, makeup can clog pores and increase sebum production. Therefore, wearing makeup may not be recommended for people with dry skin conditions based on the results of the current study. This research offers important insights to the public, encouraging them to consider the possible consequences of using makeup while exercising.

BACKGROUND: To increase skin permeability, various transdermal delivery techniques have been developed. However, due to the stratum corneum as a skin barrier, transdermal delivery remains limited. AIMS: In this study, we evaluated efficacy and safety of arc-poration as a novel technique disrupting the stratum corneum. RESULTS: Optical images and histological analysis using reconstituted human skin and porcine skin showed that the treatment of arc-poration created micropores with an average diameter of approximately 100 µm only to the depth of the stratum corneum, but not viable epidermis. In addition, the Franz diffusion cell experiment using reconstituted human skin showed a remarkable increase in permeability following pretreatment with arc-poration. Clinical results clearly demonstrated the enhancement of the skin-improving effect of cosmetics by pretreatment of arc-poration in terms of gloss, hydration, flakiness, texture, tone, tone evenness, and pigmentation of skin, without causing abnormal skin responses. The concentration of ozone and nitrogen oxides generated by arc-poration was below the permissible value for the human body. CONCLUSIONS: Arc-poration can increase skin permeability by creating stratum corneum-specific micropores, which can enhance the skin-improving effect of cosmetics without adverse responses.

BACKGROUND: Recommendations for cosmetics are gaining popularity, but they are not being made with consideration of the analysis of cosmetic ingredients, which customers consider important when selecting cosmetics. AIMS: This article aims to propose a method for estimating the efficacy of cosmetics based on their ingredients and introduces a system that recommends personalized products for consumers, combined with AI skin analysis. METHODS: We constructed a deep neural network architecture to analyze sequentially arranged cosmetic ingredients in the product and incorporated skin analysis models to get the precise skin status of users from frontal face images. Our recommendation system makes decisions based on the results optimized for the individual. RESULTS: Our cosmetic recommendation system has shown its effectiveness through reliable evaluation metrics, and numerous examples have demonstrated its ability to make reasonable recommendations for various skin problems. CONCLUSION: The result shows that deep learning methods can be used to predict the effects of products based on their cosmetic ingredients and are available for use in personalized cosmetic recommendations.

BACKGROUND: Atopic dermatitis has a marked economic impact and affects the quality of life. A cosmetic compound with an innovative strategy is proposed here as a small chemical neutraligand, GPN279 (previously identified as a theophylline derivative), that binds and potently neutralizes the TARC/CCL17 chemokine, activating the Th2 cell-expressed CCR4 receptor. OBJECTIVE: Our objective was to evaluate the safety and activity of topically applied GPN279 in mild-to-moderate atopic dermatitis patients in a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, parallel group trial. Such cosmetic active ingredient targeting dry skin with an atopic tendency would open a parallel strategy to the pharmaceutical approach, in particular for mild to moderate subjects, as an alternative to reduce the evolution towards severe forms of atopy. METHODS: This 4-week trial included adults with mild-to-moderate atopic dermatitis, according to the SCORAD index. Patients were randomized into two groups treated by topical applications of either an emulsion containing 0.44% GPN279 in placebo on skin lesions or the placebo (4.56% glycerin). Clinical activity was evaluated with the SCORAD as the primary objective. As secondary objectives, POEM, erythema, skin moisturization, its barrier function (TEWL) and safety were evaluated. RESULTS: Twenty-one patients in each group completed the study. SCORAD was significantly improved in the GPN279 group vs. placebo. GPN279 also significantly improved POEM, induced a rapid and significant decrease of erythema, and improved skin moisture. GPN279 and placebo were well tolerated throughout the study. CONCLUSION: A cosmetic cream comprising the CCL17 neutraligand GPN279 improved the skin barrier and physiology criteria in patients with mild-to-moderate atopic dermatitis.


GÉNÉRALITÉS: La dermatite atopique a un impact économique marqué et affecte la qualité de vie. Un composé cosmétique dote d'une stratégie innovante est proposé ici sous la forme d'un petit neutraligand chimique, le GPN279 (précédemment identifié comme un dérivé de la théophylline), qui se lie et neutralise puissamment la chimiokine TARC/CCL17, activant le récepteur CCR4 exprimé par les cellules Th2. OBJECTIF: Notre objectif était d'évaluer l'innocuité et l'activité du GPN279 appliqué localement chez des patients atteints de dermatite atopique légère à modérée dans un essai randomisé, en double aveugle contre placebo et en groupes parallèles. Un tel actif cosmétique ciblant les peaux sèches à tendance atopique ouvrirait une stratégie parallèle à l'approche pharmaceutique, notamment pour les sujets atteints de forme légère à modérée, comme alternative visant à réduire l'évolution vers des formes sévères d'atopie. MÉTHODES: Cet essai de 4 semaines incluait des adultes atteints de dermatite atopique légère à modérée, selon l'indice SCORAD. Les patients ont été randomisés en deux groupes traités par application topique sur les lésions cutanées soit d'une émulsion contenant 0,44% de GPN279 dans un placebo, soit du placebo seul (4,56% de glycérine). L'activité clinique a été évaluée selon l'indice SCORAD comme objectif principal. Les objectifs secondaires évaluaient le POEM, l'érythème, l'hydratation de la peau, sa fonction barrière (TEWL) et la sécurité. RÉSULTATS: Vingt et un patients de chaque groupe ont terminé l'étude. L'indice SCORAD a été significativement amélioré dans le groupe GPN279 par rapport au placebo. Le GPN279 a également amélioré de manière significative le POEM, a induit une diminution rapide et significative de l'érythème et amélioré l'hydratation de la peau. Le GPN279 et le placebo ont été bien tolérés tout au long de l'étude. CONCLUSION: Une crème cosmétique contenant le neutraligand CCL17 GPN279 améliore la barrière cutanée et les critères physiologiques chez les patients atteints de dermatite atopique légère à modérée.

ABSTRACT Objective: To evaluate the hygiene practices and frequency of use of personal hygiene products, cosmetics, and sunscreen among children and adolescents. Methods: Cross-sectional study with interviews about skincare conducted with caregivers through closed-ended questions. We included patients up to 14 years of age waiting for consultation in pediatric outpatient clinics of a tertiary hospital. We performed a descriptive statistical analysis and applied the Kruskal-Wallis test and Fisher's exact test to compare the practices according to maternal schooling. Results: We conducted 276 interviews. The median age of the participants was age four, and 150 (54.3%) were males. A total of 143 (51.8%) participants bathed once a day and 128 (46.3%) bathed two or more times a day, lasting up to ten minutes in 132 (47.8%) cases. Adult soap was used by 103 (37.3%) children and bar soap by 220 (79.7%). Fifty-three (19.2%) participants used sunscreen daily. Perfume was used by 182 (65.9%) children, hair gel by 98 (35.5%), nail polish by 62 (22.4%), and some type of make-up by 71 (25.7%) - eyeshadow by 30 (10.8%), lipstick by 52 (18.8%), face powder and mascara by 13 (4.7%). Make-up use started at a median age of 4 years. Henna tattoo was done in eight children. Conclusions: The children studied used unsuitable products for their skin, such as those intended for adults, used sunscreen inadequately, and started wearing make-up early, evidencing the need for medical orientation.


RESUMO Objetivo: Avaliar os hábitos de higiene e a frequência do uso de produtos de higiene pessoal, cosméticos e protetor solar nas crianças e adolescentes. Métodos: Estudo transversal com entrevistas para cuidadores sobre cuidados com a pele, por meio de perguntas fechadas. Incluídos pacientes de até 14 anos que consultavam nos ambulatórios pediátricos de um hospital terciário. Realizada estatística descritiva e aplicados os testes de Kruskal-Wallis e exato de Fisher para comparar os hábitos conforme a escolaridade materna. Resultados: Foram realizadas 276 entrevistas. A mediana de idade foi de 4 anos, sendo 150 (54,3%) crianças do sexo masculino. O número de banhos por dia foi de um em 143 (51,8%) casos e dois ou mais por parte de 128 (46,3%) indivíduos, com duração de até dez minutos em 132 (47,8%) dos participantes. O sabonete destinado a adultos era utilizado por 103 (37,3%) crianças e o sabonete em barra por 220 (79,7%) delas. Protetor solar era utilizado diariamente por 53 (19,2%) participantes. Perfume foi utilizado por 182 (65,9%) integrantes da amostra, gel de cabelo por 98 (35,5%), esmalte por 62 (22,4%) e algum tipo de maquiagem por 71 (25,7%) - sombra em 30 (10,8%), batom em 52 (18,8%), pó facial e rímel em 13 (4,7%). A mediana de idade de início do uso de maquiagem foi de 4 anos. Tatuagem de hena foi realizada em oito crianças. Conclusões: As crianças estudadas utilizavam produtos inadequados para a sua pele, como os destinados à pele do adulto, e faziam uso incorreto do protetor solar e uso precoce de maquiagem, mostrando a importância da orientação médica.

ABSTRACT Objective: To validate the upper limb assessments tool, Shriners Hospital Upper Extremity Evaluation (SHUEE), for individuals with hemiplegic cerebral palsy in the Brazilian population. Methods: Validation study to translate and culturally adapt the Manual and the instrument. The psychometric properties evaluated were reliability and convergent validity. Reliability was determined by internal consistency (Cronbach's α coefficient), ceiling and floor effect, sensitivity to changes, and intra- and interobserver agreement. Convergent validity was performed using the Pediatric Motor Activity Log, the self-care scale of the Pediatric Evaluation of Disability Inventory, and the Manual Ability Classification System. Results: We evaluated 21 individuals with hemiplegic cerebral palsy, with a mean age of 8.7±4.0 years. After the instrument was translated, there was no need for cultural adaptation. The total Cronbach's α coefficient was 0.887 (95% confidence interval [95%CI] 0.745-0.970). We calculated sensitivity to changes in five subjects who underwent treatment with Botulinum Toxin Type A and physical therapy, with a significant difference between pre- and post-treatment evaluations in the Spontaneous Functional Analysis and Dynamic Positional Analysis. Convergent validity showed a significant correlation of the Spontaneous Functional Analysis and Dynamic Positional Analysis with the scales evaluated. All items of SHUEE presented high intra- and interobserver agreement. Conclusions: The results revealed that the Brazilian version of the SHUEE demonstrated good reliability and convergent validity, suggesting that it is an adequate and reliable tool for individuals with hemiplegic cerebral palsy in the Brazilian population.


RESUMO Objetivo: Validar o instrumento de avaliação do membro superior, Shriners Hospital Upper Extremity Evaluation (SHUEE), para indivíduos com paralisia cerebral hemiplégica da população brasileira. Métodos: Estudo de validação no qual foi realizada tradução e adaptação cultural do manual e do instrumento. As propriedades psicométricas avaliadas foram confiabilidade e validade convergente. A confiabilidade foi determinada através da consistência interna (coeficiente α de Cronbach), efeito teto e chão, sensibilidade à mudança e concordância intra e interobservador. A validade convergente foi realizada utilizando-se o Pediatric Motor Activity Log, a escala de autocuidados do Pediatric Evaluation of Disability Inventory e o Manual Ability Classification System. Resultados: Foram avaliados 21 indivíduos com paralisia cerebral hemiplégica com idade média de 8,7±4,0 anos. Após a tradução do instrumento, não houve necessidade de adaptação cultural. O coeficiente α de Cronbach total foi de 0,887 (intervalo de confiança de 95% [IC95%] 0,745-0,970). A sensibilidade à mudança foi calculada em cinco indivíduos que realizaram aplicação de Toxina Botulínica tipo A e fisioterapia, apresentando diferença significativa entre a avaliação pré e pós-tratamento na Análise Funcional Espontânea e Análise Posicional Dinâmica. A validade convergente mostrou correlação significativa da Análise Funcional Espontânea e Análise Posicional Dinâmica com as escalas avaliadas. Todos os itens do SHUEE apresentaram concordâncias fortes, tanto na avaliação intra quanto na interobservador. Conclusões: A versão brasileira do SHUEE demonstrou um bom desempenho em relação à confiabilidade e validade convergente, sugerindo ser uma ferramenta adequada e confiável para os indivíduos com paralisia cerebral hemiplégica na população brasileira.

Objectives: To study lip hydration levels when applying a lipstick sunscreen for 3 months and to evaluate the influenceof size of lips, age, sex, smoking and skin phototype.Study design: The study group was formed by 140 volunteer subjects, one group consisting of 70 patients applyinga commercial lipstick sunscreen three times a day and the other group of 70 controls in which no product wasapplied. The age range was 20-86 years. The influence in lip hydration levels of age, sex, phototype, size of thelips and smoking habits was studied using a Corneometer 825® (Courage & Khazaka Electronic GmbH, Cologne,Germany). Results: An increase in lip hydration was found between the basal (53.49 ± 15.259) and final (59.34 ±14.51) Corneometer 825® (Courage & Khazaka Electronic GmbH, Cologne, Germany) measurements over thethree months of treatment, with statistically significant differences with respect to the control (p=0.002). However,no statistically significant differences in lip hydration were observed with regard to age, (p=0.48), gender(p=0.876), skin phototype (p=0.653), lip area (p=0.291) and smoking (p=0.178). Conclusions: Application of alipstick sunscreen 3 times a day for 3 months increases lip hydration (AU)

Introducción. Los galatos son antioxidantes empleados en la industria cosmética, farmacéutica y alimentaria desde 1947, con la finalidad de evitar la oxidación de los ácidos grasos insaturados que contienen estos productos. El objetivo de este trabajo es revisar los casos de sensibilización por galatos diagnosticados en nuestro Servicio entre 1985 y 2006. Métodos. Se han extraído de la base de datos de la Sección de Alergia de nuestro Servicio todos los casos investigados por sospecha de dermatitis alérgica de contacto, que presentaron pruebas epicutáneas positivas al propil galato, octil galato y/o dodecil galato. Resultados. Cuarenta y seis pacientes presentaron uno o más parches positivos a los galatos (36 mujeres y 10 varones, con una edad media de 42,8 años). El motivo de consulta más frecuente fue la queilitis (63 % de los casos) seguido de la dermatitis de las manos (28,26 % de los casos). El origen más frecuente de la sensibilización fue el uso de barras labiales (54,3 % de los casos), seguido de la manipulación de productos de panadería (15,2 % de los casos). La relevancia de los resultados se consideró presente en el 73,9 % de los casos y desconocida en el 23,9 % de los pacientes. Conclusiones. En nuestra serie la mayoría de los pacientes sensibilizados a los galatos consultaron por queilitis, el principal alérgeno responsable fue el propil galato, y el mecanismo más frecuente de sensibilización fue el uso de barras labiales. El galato más frecuente en los panaderos fue el octil galato, con relevancia presente en todos los casos estudiados


Background. Since 1947, the cosmetics, pharmaceutical, and food industries have used gallates as antioxidants to prevent the oxidation of unsaturated fats in their products. The aim of this study was to review the cases of sensitization to gallates diagnosed in our department between 1985 and 2006. Methods. All suspected cases of allergic contact dermatitis with patch tests positive for propyl gallate, octyl gallate, and/or dodecyl gallate were retrieved from the database of the allergy section of our dermatology department. Results. Forty-six patients had positive patch tests for 1 or more gallates (36 women and 10 men, with a mean age of 42.8 years). The most common presenting complaint was cheilitis (63 % of the cases) followed by dermatitis of the hands (28.26 %). The most common sensitizing agent was lipstick (54.3 %) followed by bakery products (15.2 %). The test result was considered clinically relevant in 73.9 % of the cases whereas the relevance was unknown in 23.9 %. Conclusions. In our case series, most patients sensitized to gallates attended the clinic due to cheilitis. The main allergen was propyl gallate and the most common mechanism of sensitization was use of lipstick. The most common gallate among bakers was octyl gallate. This agent was considered to be clinically relevant in all cases studied

The development of analytical methods and the stability study of cosmetics and pharmaceuticals are part of the quality assurance, which has for objective to guarantee the effectiveness and security in the use of such products for the consumer. Kojic acid is a depigmentant agent that can be used in association with glycolic acid, an exfoliant agent, in order to have its action maximized. The aim of this work was the development of an analytical method to assay kojic acid 1% associated or not with 5% glycolic acid in cream and gel form, based on excipients normally used in compounding formulations, and carried out an accelerated study to evaluate its stability. To determine kojic acid in such formulations it was employed an UV first-derivative spectrophotometric method (UVD), with "zero crossing" set in 256,8 nm, where the excipients interference could be annulled. To assay both acids in association it was validated a reversed phase HPLC method with ion pairing, employed a Synergi Hidro® C18 column, mobile phase NH4H2PO4/H3PO4 buffer 30 mmol -1 pH 3,0 plus TBA (tetrabutylammonium bromide) 2 mM : acetonitrila (95:5), flow rate of 0,7 mL/min and detector PDA set in 220 nm. The samples were easily extracted and the run time was 12 min. The same experimental conditions were used to the development of a HPLC method in order to determine the kojic acid isolated in cream and gel formulations. The UVD e HPLC methods were not statistically different in terms of accuracy and precision (p = 95%). The samples submitted to the accelerated stability study, for 90 days, were stored at 40±2ºC and light 25±2ºC. All samples were also stored at room temperature protected from light. Appearance, pH, rheology and amount of kojic and glycolic acids (by HPLC) were evaluated. At the end of the study, all the samples showed physical stability, but presented decline in kojic acid above 5% at 40±2ºC. Samples stored at not accelerated conditions preserved 90% of kojic acid concentration. Therefore, a 90 days expiration date may be considered for formulations with similar composition and packing, when stored at room temperature and protected from light.
